Closely with not only the president , but also the first family. The part of this elite military unit assigned to the white house. They deal with all the food and beverage service, other daily tasks that are personal to the president and the first family, so basically, they work really close by with him. News that someone tested positive near him and the first known case of kvz insicoronavire the west wing. Whats the change Going Forward . The white house confirmed they were informed by the White House Medical Office that a military staffer who was on the white house grounds tested positive for coronavirus, but brooke, they havent said much other than that. I should note that Kelly Anne Conway was just doing an interview on fox news, asked about our story, didnt say much beyond the president and Vice President were doing well but believed in part, the media could do to share respect by Wearing Masks. Most reporters do wear masks when theyre that close to the president. Now, the question is, do they change the calculus about staffers inside the west wing Wearing Masks . Social distancing, things of that nature because so far, brooke, the white house has relied on the fact that often, the senior staffers are those who are meeting with President Trump and Vice President pence get tested for coronavirus, and so, of course, thats a lot of questions Going Forward. We dont know much else about the individual except they were on white house grounds yesterday. They were exhibiting symptoms but there are still questions about whether they were in the oval office that day, the day before, really, what their schedule looked like. Got it. Kaitlan, thank you. In the United States, there are more than 1,231,000 cases and nearly 74,000 people have died from covid19. Cnns athena jones has been following the latest on the States Reopening, vaccine trials and new jaw dropping numbers on jobless claims. So athena, these figures on how many have lost their job is a punch in the gut. In kentucky, one in three workers have filed for unemployment, just to put it in perspective for everyone. Reporter hi, brooke, thats exactly right. Nationwide, another 3. 2 Million People filed first time claims for Unemployment Benefits last week, that brings the total number of initial claims filed since mid march to 33. 5 million. These are truly stunning numbers and a big reason why so many states are allowing businesses to open again. With maryland allowing elective surgeries and certain Outdoor Activities to resume starting today, at least 44 states will be partially reopened by sunday. But now, the Trump Administration is blocking the release of step by step cdc guidance meant to help States Reopen safely. Every day, were faced with mystery. Every day, the virus throws a curveball at us, and instead of having a Single Agency that provided wisdom for all of the states and all of the Public Health departments across the United States and frankly, the world, we have mums the word and chaos. The 17 page document, a draft which cnn obtained last week was compiled at the request of White House Coronavirus task force deborah birx according to a senior cdc official, spelling out for schools, day camps, child care programs, faith communities, and employers with vulnerable workers. Its not just helpful but crucial and vital. I am disappointed and angry this has happened. Reporter the associated press, who was first to report the administrations hold on the guidelines saying the cdc official told them the Agency Scientists were told the document would, quote, never see the light of day, raising concerns among leaders seeking clear guidance. Let us hear from the experts. I think well be able to make much better decisions accordingly. Dont politicize this. Reporter already States Reopening dont appear to be meeting four criteria set out in cdc guidelines including a 14 day decline in new cases and the ability to test everybody with covidlike symptoms. To my knowledge, no state meets all four criteria. Reporter new infections on the rise including texas, which will allow swimming pools, barbershops and hair, nail and tanning salons to reopen friday. I just think for me, were going a bit too fast. Reporter new jerseys governor extending the states Public Health emergency into early june. And there are new concerns in new york, while new cases in hospitalizations continue to fall, theres a new hot spot up state. Dozens of employees at a greenhouse farm testing positive for the coronavirus. Meanwhile, at least 64 children have shown up at new York Hospitals with serious inflammatory symptoms like persistent fever and toxic shock syndrome. State officials believe could be linked to the virus. And in illinois, evidence the virus is having an out sized impact with the latino community, testing at the highest rate of any demographic in the state. Nearly 16,000 of them tested positive for covid19. Thats a Positivity Rate of 60 . Thats nearly three times our state average. Reporter meanwhile, the Labor Department reports another 3. 2 Million People filed for Unemployment Benefits last week. Bringing the total number of first time claims to more than 33. 5 million since mid march. Still, there are new developments on the vaccine front. Biotech Company Announcing the fda approved phase two trials of the vaccine, bringing the company one step closer to the final phase. Large scale clinical trials. One more thing about the cdc guidelines rejected, one described like this. This whole reopening is learning to talk again. You cant do it alone. It makes sense to listen to the experts was her point. Brooke . Were going to talk about those guidelines being shelved with these two next guests, athe athena, thank you very much. For the broader look, with me now, Emergency Room Physician dr. Lena nguyen. And then welcome to both of you, glad youre both well. Dr. Nguyen, let me start with you and lets back up to this story out of the white house thats really percolating this afternoon. This valet. This is someone who brings, when people think valet, i know theyre thinking, elite military unit, someone who is bringing the president food, drink in the white house, someone very close physically to the president. We know this person was showing symptoms wednesday morning, has now turned up hes tested positive, the president has tested negative. Does that mean the president is in the clear . Not at all. So for this, we look at the cdc guidelines which are really clear on this. So if, one, exposed to somebody who tests positive, that person should be in quarantine for 14 days, even if they test negative, should still be in quarantine until such a time they could be cleared because the incubation period is up to 14 days, and frankly, the president should follow this guidance no differently than anyone else. So we know the president is meeting with the governor of texas the. We know the room will be filled with white house staffers, members of the media. What are you saying then . That that is not the appropriate thing to do. That would go against the best Public Health guidance. Look, if i had a patient coming in who had this type of sho exposure, i would tell them to not be in public, not even be with their household contacts. They should be in a room separate from everybody else living in their home, and so i mean, i guess i dont know the exact level of exposure. We dont know, we dont know, thats the thing, but we know this role, this individual does come in close contact but we dont know the specifics as kaitlan pointed out, the exposure in the last 24 hours or so. Let me come back to you. General, im looking down on our notes from our white house unit. When the president found out about this, he was upset. When news that someone close to the president had tested positive for coronavirus, theyd been, quote, hitting the fan in the west wing. What would you like they should be, because heres the thing. If they had done the right teaching for their people, they would have understood that youve got to do continuous testing and you cant wait until youre symptomatic because this disease apparently has two or three days incubation period in your body in which youre infectious to others and you dont even have symptoms. Its not just whether he was in the west wing, the valet was in the west wing. The day before that and who did he talk to and did he, how close was he . It seems to us looking at the experiential evidence, id refer to the doctor, of course, but not just, make sure you wash your hands but this is about, aerosols, how you talk to people and how close you are, and how often youre with them. Are you in an enclosed room with no circulation where youre constantly exhaling viruses and people are walking through these aerosolized virus clouds. So theres a lot here to be concerned about. And the president should be upset. Let me stay with you, general, because we wanted to talk about your column on cnn about leadership. In this time, what should leadership look like . First of all, a leader has to build trust and that means he has to be credible in what he says. He has to explain, communicate, take responsibility, he has to have a strategy and a plan, he has to accept the responsibility that hes the leader, he has to build a team and work with others, and all of those dimensions, in this crisis, what we have is a very effective political leader in the highest position in the world, really, and highest elected official in the United States but people all over the world looking to the president of the United States for leadership in this crisis and hes running it like a Political Campaign instead of like a national leader, in the sense that hes not accepting responsibilities, passing off blame, isolating, attacking certain groups. He just hasnt bellied up to the bar, as the way we would say it in the military, and you cant do that at this point. Its a very simple calculus. He had a tremendous opportunity to be reelected if hes an effective leader and if hes not, being the leader of the Political Party and doing favors and getting another couple judges appointed, thats not enough. The American People are looking to the president for leadership, and hes got to step out of the role of being a political partisan and move up to the role of being the national leader. I wrote the column because we need him to do that. To your point about leadership, dr. Wen, this is for you. I think its noteworthy as we look at this story how quickly the president , this valet, everyone around them were able to be tested, but that is not what the president is advocating for. Just the other day said, we dont need widespread testing, doctor . Thats right, and were hearing members of his administration say that its ridiculous to even suggest that there should be testing for every american, but thats what his staff need in order to feel safe going back to work. Why shouldnt that also be the same reassurance that every american needs in order to go back to work or school . Frankly, we do need that widespread testing. This is what Public Health experts like myself have been saying for weeks and months. We do need that widespread testing the identify people who have symptoms and to see whether they have covid19 but also those without symptoms, so that we can know what is the true prevalence of this disease in our community to really contain this disease because otherwise, we are reopening blind and were going to suffer the consequences, which is more infections, more hospitalizations, and unfortunately, more preventable deaths and the president clearly knows this. This lesson to be applied to all of the American People. General clark, dr. Wen, thank you so much for your opinions in all of this, and you can get more of your questions answered tonight regarding all things covid19. Former Vice President al gore, spike lee, and Laurie Garrett will join anderson and sanjay tonight. A new coronavirus facts and fears at 8 00 eastern here on cnn. Welcome back. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. The mayor of providence, rhode island, encouraging people to publicly shame anyone not wearing a face mask amid this pandemic. What we need is everyone to quote unquote selfpolice. Take ownership to be part of the solution, and then what ive been telling our residents here in providence is if youre out there and you see someone not abiding by the rules, you should socially shame them so that they do fall in line. Dr. Rashni raj, socially shaming and what that entails, we dont know but you tell me. How effective are these face masks at at least slowing the spread of covid19 . Well, the face mask story is an ever changing one, as you know, about a month ago, we were telling people not to wear face masks, save it for the Health Care Workers and now what we realize is the asymptomatic spread of covid19 is very real, and thats really the reason why people should be wearing face masks. Not so much protection for yourself, although there is some, really to prevent the spread to other people, so if they wear the mask, covering your nose and your mouth, its much less likely if you cough or sneeze or even talk in a public place, so they are important, and i do think people should be wearing them, certainly when theyre required by law but i dont think that social shaming is the way to kind of police or enforce this kind of rule. What about, i was just having a conversation about President Trump and leadership and this valet and the president said he doesnt like to wear a mask, and were told most white house staffers actually remove their masks before going to the west wing because the white house relies on the Rapid Response tests. A couple of minutes ago though, the director of the National Institutes of health testified that this abbott Rapid Response test, thats what the white house uses, you get your test results in 15 minutes but it has a 15 false negative rate. Is that a high number . It is a high number. Its definitely a high number when were talking about a test for such a potentially deadly and very infectious disease, so yeah, i think the reliance on tests, thats certainly not a good strategy in terms of, i dont need to wear a mask, just get a test. First of all, early on in the disease, the test may not show it or the test i. T. Mtself woul flawed. Certainly better than nothing but i think they can do better than that. So i dont think the tests mean people should not wear masks or think its okay not to. At the very least, you want the physical barrier between yourself and people. Did she freeze or do we still have her . Man, thats what happens when were trying to do all of this over the internet because of this new normal we are all in. The Texas Supreme Court just hours ago ordered the release of the dallas hair salon owner defied the order. Cnns ed lavandera following this for us. This womans case has really been a flash point in texas with the governor and the ag siding with the salon owner. So tell me more about the latest development. Reporter shes become a celebrity among the number of people here in texas pushing to get businesses allowed to open up much faster than some people would like to see here and as you mentioned, brooke, the Texas Supreme Court ruled just a short while ago that Shelly Luther should be released from jail. She had been sentenced to a week in jail for civil and criminal contempt of court of a judges order. Last week, she ripped up a cease and desist order from a judge here in Dallas County for keeping her hair salon open in north dallas and the move from the Texas Supreme Court comes after Governor Greg Abbott amended his stay at home order which prevented hair salons in this pandemic, and to not allow confinement in jail for any violations of this order which begs the question among many people here, exactly how do you enforce these orders if that kind of punishment is taken off the table . But nonetheless, Shelly Luther about to be released from jail here at some point this afternoon. Theres a small group of supporters who have shown up here at the Dallas County jail to see her walk out of this jail where she has been just several days serving part of that sevenday sentence and all of this ironically enough happening as the governor here in texas has decided to allow hair salons, barbershops and nail salons to open upstarti startin tomorrow, brooke . Do you think with her release today, what that means for other Business Owners there in texas . Reporter thats the question that many people have here at this point. There are still a number of businesses that are technically under the stay at home order and arent allowed to reopen. You have gyms, you have bars, you have office buildings, and that sort of thing. So many people are asking, what happens if we just decide to ignore the orders altogether and just start opening up at will . There are fines and citations that theoretically could still be issued, but that could add up rather quickly. So many people are wondering, why not just push the envelope and continue to press on and run and given the Political Climate here in texas, many people wondering if theres even a stomach to issue fines to a bunch of small Business Owners, real question is whether theres any teeth in these orders that exist here now in texas. Yeah, ed, thank you very much. In dallas. As three million more americans file for unemployment this week, another major retail giant is filing for bankruptcy. Yes, no, thank you and i want to get to your being tested in just a second but lets talk about your mom. Tell me how you learned she was so sick because as we mentioned, she went to work. Then she went to the doctor. Doctor said, its a cold. You can go back. How did you know . Yes, its because me and my mom, we are very close together, and if something happen and she always call me and ask me opinions, what she has to do and what shes supposed to do and on that day, she called me a couple of times and then she say, daughter, i am at work right now, and i am having difficulty breathing and chest pain and body ache and i cough a lot and sore throat. And then i told my mom, yes, you have to go to the clinic and get checked out if you have covid19 or not. After that, before that, she told me one of her friends already have this, felt they have covid19 positive, so i just told my mom to go double check it, and they told my mom its a normal flu and that she can go back to work. And then on that day, she had a wet uniform, she asked the team leader to change for her and they dont even change it. She came home with a wet clothes. You sound like a daughter who loves her mother very much who told her to go back to the doctor. You had that sense something was wrong, and what is it like looking at these photos that weve been playing of your mother hooked up to all these machines . That must be so difficult. It is. Its because my mom has given everything to us, shes a very good mother and worker also, a hard worker and good worker. And then plus, she dont miss a lot of work unless shes sick. And taken care of us pretty welsh and thwel well, and its a hard time seeing her with that machine. And its not recovering. Shes not recovering yet. And then another issue that were having right now for my little brother, hes in marines and he try to come back and he couldnt because of the covid19, they had to be in the base. That is the excruciating part of all of this. So many loved ones in the hospital and theyre alone because you cannot physically be near them because of this horrid, horrid virus. The Justice Department dropping its case against Michael Flynn, the president s very First National security adviser whose lies about his contacts with russia prompted the president to fire him. That was three years ago, and led to flynn working with the muller investigation. Shimon prokupecz here with me. Shimon, what exactly do you know . Reporter yeah, so the government, the u. S. Attorney department of justice in washington, dc filed this motion and theyre filing to have the case dismissed. Its a 108 page filing, so were still going through it, but some of the headlines here. Certainly one of the things the department of justice here arguing that this case, they could no longer pursue this case and that the prosecution of this case would not serve the interest of justice. They say that the Michael Flynn interview, remember that controversial interview of what really became controversial certainly under this attorney general, they say that should never have taken place. It was covered extensively. I was covering the story with Michael Flynn, was arrested the morning he surrendered and remember when Michael Flynn pleaded guilty, decided to cooperate. The department of justice under this attorney general barr saying none of this should have happened, essentially, the fbi should have never interviewed Michael Flynn. They werent justified to do the interview and therefore, now, this case, they can no longer go forward with this he cooperated with the government. He in essence got a Cooperation Agreement with the fbi, with the department of justice, and in turn they didnt bring certain charges. Controversy sort of started after he bleeded guilty and was getting ready to be sentenced. I was out there, i remember this when the judge said to him, all sorts of questions about his cooperation, and Michael Flynn, of course, and his attorneys became concerned that the judge was going to give him prison time. Then, of course, things sort of took a turn. Ever since then weve been seeing these motions from his attorneys, new attorneys, of course weve heard the attorney general raise concerns. The president of the United States just last week consistently tweeting, reminding folks, telling folks, arguing that Michael Flynn was treated unfairly. Well, now today, in really what is a remarkable move by the department of justice, and just really unprecedented, after someone has been cooperating, after someone has pleaded guilty, was a government witness, for them to turn around and do this today, im not going to tell you that anyone is surprised by this move but its certainly unprecedented. Elie honing, i can see the face on shimons face, now theyre dropping the case . What do you make of this . The fix is in. This is an absolute injustice, but like shimon said, you could see this coming. Michael flynn lied to the fbi, he pled guilty under oath in federal court to doing that, he took a plea, and then what does bill barr do . He says of all the tens of thousands of cases hes been in charges of in the department of justice, look at that one. Lets take a closer look. Not coincidentally the one the president has railing on, and now we see bill barr doing Donald Trumps dirty work. Now hes not going to have to issue a pardon, and hens taken this unprecedented step. Ive never seen anything like this as a federal or state prosecutor, brooke. For now, thank you, thank you, elie.
