Hey. Im Anderson Cooper in el paso, texas, for cnns special coverage. America under assault. Special coverage of the Mass Shootings that have once again brought americans facetoface with the combination of gun violence and hate. Theres a lot to talk about in this hour. This texas border town, the motive is clear. A man drove 10 to 11 hours fueled by anger towards la tee nos and hispanics leaving 22 dead behind me. Mexicans government calling it a terrorist attack saying there was no doubt the suspect was targeting mexicans. Venezuela has cited a travel warning because of hate crimes and violence in the u. S. More from here in a moment. Well come back to you, anderson. Thank you. Im Brooke Baldwin here in dayton, ohio, where cnn has gotten its hands on exclusive video from sundays mass shooting right here in what they call the oregon district. A surveillance camera capturing the moments as the gunman rushes out of an alley and opens fire in the area. Its packed with thousands of people. Its a saturday night. This is a popular place to hang out. You can see them running in every direction. 60 hours after this mass shooting that claimed the lives of nine people and injured dozens others. The motive, the why still remains a mystery. But this is what we know. There were multiple red flags during a search of the shooters home. Law enforcement sources tell us they uncovered writings showing his desire to kill. And it is believed the shooter was headed straight into one of the most popular and crowded bars here in dayton saturday night. Ned peppers, right there. Police shot and killed the shooter at the bars front door. And i learned today in an exclusive interview with one of the managers, one of the guys behind the bar that night, dane thomas, that this bar staff is a family. That they quickly went from being victims to First Responders the doorman even grabbing the gun from the shooter to stop the bloodshed at the front door. When we first realized that it was gun shots going off, i was down at the opposite end of the bar down here. Okay. At that given time i started running towards the front of the bar. My first thought was get all the people behind the bar down, down. Our bartenders down. Get our flood lights open. People need to see what theyre doing. So are you shouting get down . Get down and pushing people to the ground that did not realize what was going on yet. You just heard it. You just knew. I frequently practice shooting ranges. You know what the sound is. You know how you know the smell of it. And then when the barrage of gun fire started happening, i realized, oh, its our front doorstep. Which is feet from where we are now. So youre delling everyone to get down. You start running towards the front of the house. Are you basically here when you see the doorman . Yes. After he had grabbed the gun at this point and i came over here with another one of our people to help take that gun from him. He was emotionally obviously very emotional at that point. Was that right here . That was in the vestibule area. So in this door area, you see the doorman about where . The doorman is standing right here in this spot. And holding the gun . Yes. And the shooter is outside the door. And then it is a sea of police. A literal sea of police around. All guns pointed at him. At that point he was still moving slightly. So they want to make sure that nothing else was going to happen. So you see the doorman understandably is upset. You knowing how to handle you grabbed the gun. Safely with someone else. What did you do . The other employee took the gun downstairs and put it in a safe spot. While another one after the situation after he quickly realized that it was under control, he stays with the door guy. Calm him down, waum him around. Keep him as under control as you could keep somebody that has just seen that and did that. What did he say to you . Why did he want to grab that gun . He was on the radio as it was happening out front letting us know what was going on. After he of course grabbed the gun, radio chattered and as soon as he came back and turned around, his first words to me was im sorry, i couldnt stop it. I couldnt do more. So he being out front and on a radio saw it happening down the street coming to your front door. Yes. And he let us know from the guy standing next to him to the guys that are at the back gates, the back doors what was going on and they knew what to do at that point. And he wanted the gun because he wanted to stop it. Uhhuh. And how is he doing today . Hes okay. Hes awake now. And hes still in the hospital. Accepting visitors. A couple of us went there last night. I could not due to scheduling. So you saw him last night . I personally did not. A number of our staff went last night. What did they say . How is he . Shaken up still . He was shaken up, but he was very happy to see friends. People that he knew. Shaken up but happy to see friends. So grateful to dane and ned peppers for letting us in and sharing part of their story. Theres so much more to it including the other people who were at the bar behind the bar. Including the story of a second hero who was a former army ranger who served both iraq and afghanistan who sadly knew exactly what to do. And so he jumped into action and was able to help out until those paramedics arrived on the scene. So more of my interview with dane coming up in just a little bit. You know, its so fascinating and so heartwarming that a business becomes a family. And people respond to each other like family in the worst of times. Well have more from you there in el paso here were learning more about many of the heroes who saved people from certain death from the shooters rampage. One of them is gilbert cerna, a walmart employee, who says he helped dozens of people hide in shipping containers. Listen. I opened the shipping containers in the back of the store and i threw the customers in there and i was also waiting for more customers to come out of the store. They were just scared. And i was like, get in the trailer. Get in the trailer. And they followed and got in. Theres an image that i that i dont want to talk about. But there is an image that i cant get out of my head. Sorry. I just need to know that individual is okay. Nicole chavez was raised here in el paso. Shes a cnn. Com writer. You spoke with him. Hes working at he works at the walmart behind us. Whats fascinating to me is you grew up here. This was actually the first walmart you ever went to. Talk to me about this walmart. When you walk into this walmart, its like you mostly hear people speaking spanish. You know, people are, like, just super, like, welcoming to anybody. If they speak english, spanish, spanglish too. And you also see mexican products, mac and cheese, hot dogs. Its this melting pot. But theres this interesting mix of not only people who come every day from across the border, but also from four hours away or, like, even, you know, other states in mexico. They just come to shopping for, like, clothing. Its widely known this walmart, this is sort of the first stop that somebody who coming over from mexico to do some shopping would probably stop at. Yeah. Like lets say, like, youre customer here is spending, like, at least an hour, you know, on the border crossing. Youre, like you have all your family. Youre, you know, like, basically, like, so hot. And this is just, like, just into miles. You say, lets go to walmart. Get a nice cool drink. Like, its just right here. You know . And so given that its a melting pot, the fact that this is where the killer struck, its i mean, it particularly resonates and particularly hurts many of the people in this community. Yeah. Because its not only, like, you have a lot of, you know, people from out of, you know, the city. But also theres there are walmart employees here. Theyve been here for over 25 years, you know and also, like, its a specific location thats so central. Its close to the border, but its central to the city. So yeah. I spoke to a woman that she was here just to pick up, you know, cream for her coffee, you know, and some back to school supplies. Nicole chavez, thank you for your work. Appreciate it. Well have a lot more in the wake of this shooting driven by hate, by White Nationalism, by White Supremacy. The community of el paso is dealing with overwhelming acts of kindness. A funeral home tells cnn that three families have reached out to them. Theres also been an enormous outpouring for the children of the victims. A gofundme for the anchondo family has raised more than 70,000. Jordan anchondo was killed shielding her 2monthold son who survived. Her husband andre was also killed leaving behind three children in all. Cnns sara sidner spoke with the grieving relatives a short time ago. Listen. Its like i lost part of me. We pray a lot. We have a lot of family and friends. You go to call her and you forget that shes not there. We forgive him. We honestly forgive him. We pray for him. We hope that he finds god. Because god teaches you to be loving. My next guest is focused on how Civic Leaders in el paso n help victims of the shooting. Thank you so much for being with me. Tell us how youre trying to help. Before i start, i want to thank the First Responders for the amazing job they have done. This community is a community that is filled with love, with welcomeness, and nothing is going to change that. We wont be defined by what happened. Ive heard that time and again. We wont be defined by this. Absolutely. It is a generous community. And our organization which is a group of hispanicamerican Business Leaders that have banded together to form the organization to do good in the community, to focus on education, economic development. Arts and our heritage, children are important. In this situation, we have come together to put together a Scholarship Fund for the victims children. And really focusing on anybody that was left orphaned. Is that something people can donate to . Yes, they can. They can contact me directly and my number is 9155845430. Or 9052410735. And the organizations name . The organization, our community in action. They have a website. Go gouk to their went. So youre trying to raise money for the children. Thats right. We will start the funding with about 10,000 or more. And then we hope for that to grow as we move forward. What kind of responses are you getting so far . What kind of what are you hearing from people here . Its amazing. I think one of the most pervasive things that i hear is that we dont want to politicize this. This is not a time to get on political sides. Its about the families. Its about our families, our neighbors who have really been impacted. And theyve been impacted. Our community has been impacted. And we are determined to make sure that they understand that their burdens are not being carried by them alone. That the community is here to support them. And not just initially but forever. I appreciate all youre doing. Thank you very much. Still ahead, we have more from brooke in dayton and brookes exclusive interview with the bar staff in dayton where the shooting took place. Youre watching special cnn coverage here. Im in dayton. Anderson cooper is in el paso. Here in dayton, we just shared the first part of my interview with dane thomas, the head manager at ned peppers bar. It was at the front doorstep of this bar where police took this gunman down. Dane heard the gunshots. Dane rushed to the front of the bar and he talked about the doorman, he talked about how the doorman wanted to save lives and grabbed the gun. Right . He also talked about a former army ranger on staff at the bar who is also critical late saturday night in saving lives. Did you see the gunman down on the ground . Yes. What did you see . She was on the ground. There was some slight movement, some slight action. He was alive. He was still alive. He had taken his last breath or did take his last breath and then you just see the cops or police all surrounding him, guns pointed at him waiting. What were you thinking in that moment . I was hoping that everybody was okay. I had not seen what had gone on down the road yet. I didnt see the people on the ground yet. I had just seen him at our doorstep. What did you do next . I walked to the middle of the bar here and started telling people that they needed to stay down and hold in position. Make sure our guys out back that nobody was getting trampled at that time. The guys in the back of the establishment were helping people up and helping them to safety at that time. I went next door to our sister bar and made sure they were doing the same thing. They were also taking in victims, gun shot victims on that side. And pulling them off to the side as well. Putting them in the back patio area. You mentioned to me you guys have a u. S. Veteran employee of ned peppers. Hes an army ranger. Tell me what he did and how you helped him. I spoke to him last night more. He has gone through medical training. I believe he called it field combat medical experience training. He knew what to do, bottom line. He knew what to do with gun shot victims. He said blood is nothing. Thats not new to him. He had a tour in afghanistan and iraq. He immediately went out front and started assisting the two people that were directly in front of our business is cpr, calling out that he needs tourniquets. Taking off tshirts. Bar tshirts we have. And youre helping grab par tshirts and towels to give to him to apply pressure. Literally every towel we had, every tshirt we had, we were chucking that out there. They were making makeshift tourniquets with that until the police could take over. Looking down the street, you saw customers, patrons, our staff doing everything they can to save as many people as they could. Whether it was applying pressure to wounds, holding hands, telling people its all going to be okay, youre going to make it. Thats immediately what i saw. So you were the victims turned into First Responders here at ned peppers. None of us want to think of ourselves as heroes. A lot of us just think we were the people there at that time trying to do the right thing to the best of our abilities. When do you hope to reopen and what do you want that to look like . A number of our partners down here, we were on a call yesterday morning talking about what we were going to do yesterday. We came to the conclusion we would open up our doors for anybody who wanted to come in and grieve. A lot of people will not feel comfortable going to some place they might have never been before. Counselors office or the Convention Center to meet with people who can help talk this through. They want to come to some place theyre familiar with. As soon as the pel hits at 5 00 p. M. And talk to people they know about it. So youve had people come through here and sit at this bar and grieve in the last 24 hours . Absolutely. People who have known people. Can you give me an example of what kind of people and what they said . The best way i can describe it with opening our doors yesterday for grievance is a family reunion. It was people i havent seen down here in years that wanted to talk to us. They knew a lot of us had been here for years and years. They wanted to check in and hug it out. I dont think ive ever hugged so many people in my life in the past 24 hours. But thats what occurred. He said he was so humbled by people who reached out to him. I want to thank ned peppers, thank austin the owner for connecting me to dane. I know theyre not really allowing members of the media in this bar here. But im grateful that they allowed me in to tell their story because they were quick to make sure this wasnt any worse. And again, police 30 seconds later took this guy down. Still ahead here in dayton, i will talk to the young man being praised for what we see here in this surveillance video. Now Washington Governor Jay Inslee has just released his plan that he says will combat White Nationalist gun violence. Joining me now is governor inslee from seattle. Thanks very much. Sir, your plan multiple parts including systems that track domestic terrorists and expanding cooperation with International Law enforcement agencies. Those are things which frankly are not happening right now. The domestic terrorism is not a crime in the way that International Terrorism is. Yeah. Well, we need a National Campaign against White Nationalism. We need a National Campaign against weapons of war that have caused so much carnage across the country including in my state. And im very committed to this because, you know, i referred to the president as a White Nationalist in the white house. Days before this tragedy and now to see that happen, its not just sorrow, its anger i feel. I think we need an intentional focus. That starts with removing the person whos in power and coddled White Nationalism. Thats donald trump from office. So thats a predicate to getting this job done. But yes we need to recognize that White Nationalist terrorism is every bit as deadly and as far as frequency more so than that off our shores. And this president has actually dismantled and it seems unbelievable that its true, he has actually dismantled numerous efforts we have to identify domestic terrorism and White Nationalism. The fbi director just said the other day most of the arrests have been for White Nationalism in domestic terrorism. He hatds reduced the resources. He has not put forward a screening process to identify these folks. And hes done zip to work with the International Community because this is an International Threat of White Supremacy movements across the country. Its not just that. We have to get to this weapons of war issue. We need to ban assault weapons. And i voted for that in 1994 were lost my seat over it. But i never regretted that vote. The country has had a bully full of this violence now. We ought to have Congress Come back into session and ban assault weapons tomorrow, frankly. I have about eight other ideas i proposed in this effort. Let me ask you about the assault weapon ban. Thats something democrats support. The final study that was done on that when it ended in 2004 essentially said that they couldnt they could not link banning of assault the law of banning assault weapons with the reduction of crime that occurred over that period of time and they point to the fact that its not really a ban because all these guns that all these assault weapons are still out there. Theres millions of them out there and its not as if youre confiscating those. So does a ban yes, it stops new ones from being sold here in the United States. But it doesnt do anything about the millions of guns already in existence. Well look. This guy walked in in ohio im told with a capacity of a hundred rounds. You tell me why thats necessary. Ive seen studies of the country that has reduced mass murders while this law was in effect. I think we need to look at it from a rational standpoint. There is no reason in this country that anyone needs a weapon of war. This has now become the choice weapon of mass murders in the United States. And it happens time and time and time again. So i just think the American People want this and deserve it and we ought to have somebody in the white house who will stand up against the nra. We need to get them on the run nationally. But we got to go deeper than that too because the White Nationalism effort is at the heart of this of what we saw in texas. And we need someone to stand up and confront donald trump and get somebody there that confronts White Nationalism. Im up for that job. Maybe theres others, but this country needs somebody to do that. Governor jay inslee, i appreciate your time in these difficult days here in el paso. Thank you very much. Thank you. Still ahead, more to cover. The family of the victims here speaking out about their dad. They want you to know he died a hero. David johnson, he went to the walmart with his wife shopping for their granddaughter katelyn who was also with them when the shooting began. David johnson was pretty familiar with guns. He grew up with them and been around them all his life. When he shooting began in walmart, he knew he had to protect his wife and granddaughter. He died shielding them from the gunman. He was 63 years old. I spoke with davids daughters kimberly, crystal, and stephanie. Hows your daughter doing . Hows katelyn . Shes being super strong. Shes i was expecting i dont know what i was expecting, but that little girl is excited to go to school. She wants to go to school. She understands what she saw, apparently. According to my mom, she knew exactly what to do. From a situation at school, i dont know. But she knew what was going on. Do you know exactly what happened . Just when i called my mom, i was just checking up on my daughter at my lunch and they were still being i guess they were being evacuated. From what my mom told me over the phone, she said he shot. I heard my daughter crying. And that they were at walmart. There was no full sentences. It wasnt real. I asked her if she was joking. Because this stuff happens on tv but not here. Now do you know the full story of what happened . From what weve been told, like what my mom said, was that he pushed them down, my niece and my mom, and covered them. Your dad pushed them down. Yes. And he got shot. He got on top of them. He pushed them and made them hide. My moms memories, it happened so fast. All she did say was the gunman was two feet away. That close. My daughter talks about the smoke. Thats what she remembers. But other than that, they still havent really and im not pushing right now. Sure. In a situation like this, how do you proceed with your with the 9yearold . I dont know. Im reaching out. A lot of people have reached out to help. Ive already taken her to her doctor. Theyve given us numbers and referrals. And people to help her. Her school has reached out and agreed to help her. She has so many people behind her right now. And me and my husband were just were there for her. Were staying there for her and letting her know its okay to talk. When you heard what your dad had done, does it surprise you at all he sacrificed himself like that . No. He is that kind of man 100 . Hes been around guns his whole life. He used to hunt, i believe. So he knows what to do. And him saving my niece and my mom, that is him. Absolutely. Thats great testament to him. Yes. No one was surprised. They are, you know, his number ones. So hed do that for any of us. What do you want people to know about your dad . Hes a hero. He saved my mom and he saved my niece. And he was an amazing man. How about you . The same thing. I mean, i could have lost my daughter. I was so close to losing her, but because of him shes still here. And my mom. My mom is still here. And if it wasnt for him, shell his legacy will be forever with us. And i want he was just a hero. I wish he was here for me to tell him how thankful i am because i could have lost her. And he saved her. Is there anything else you want people to know . Just what a wonderful man he was. He did so much for all of us and sometimes we didnt deserve it. But he was the best dad that anyone could ask for. And he loved his grandchildren a lot. Katelyn had him wrapped around his finger . She was the first. So absolutely. He would sit in the kitchen and do chemistry experiments with her and make her little potions. No matter how tired he was from work, hed be there. No complaints. Hed be smiling.
