Horrendous that it cannot wait. Impeachment or just it is impeachment. It is impeachment time. Nick payton walsh, Cnn Senior International correspondent and Juan Carlos Lopez also in san juan. Nick, first to you. Whats happening on the ground there right now . Reporter well, you saw that protest up on the main expressway. They got to their hundreds of thousands mark, certainly. Extraordinary numbers. Many of them, despite this at times torrential rain started moving towards the old town of san juan. Not many behind me here, despite the noise theyre making. And actually for the first time in days, we can see the barricades manned by police and down in the distance, fort alayso is. Donald trump, the president of the united states, has spoken out today, and said that he considers the governor to be, quote, terrible. Hes also criticized his key opponent. Just heard from the mayor of san juan saying, quote, shes a horror show. Clearly no obviously listening from washington here. We also heard from those in the crowd who have flown in from washington, Puerto Ricans who live here in their past, how they felt about what they attended today. I voted for him, and i am so disillusioned with how he has managed everything since maria. And now this. And he needs to step down. He just needs to step down. Here i bet there are people who voted for him and are mad. This is a historic moment for the people of puerto rico here in the island and everywhere around the world. Everyone is telling ricky that the game is over. He no longer represents the people of puerto rico. Reporter so the protests really fueled by pretty much anybody with instagram. Ricky martin, various others trying to move the protesters on in substantial number. The rain may well get in their way, possibly. And it depends whether or not tonight passes peacefully, i think, whether it changes over the mind of governor rossello. What happens if he doesnt choose to resign . There is an impeachment investigation under way. The results of that will then inform congress as to whether or not they decide to launch impeachment proceedings. Unclear, though, if that will do the job of getting him out of the governors mansion. Behind me, he says he wants to work to get the confidence of the people back, and he was elected. So he has said he wont be selling for power for reelection, i should say, next year. But still, these protesters want him out now and it depends on it makes an impact on his pretty resolute mindset. Hes made it clear, he does not intend to step down. Juan carlos, what have you been hearing, just on that front . You know, we just heard from a couple of folks that nick spoke with, saying the game is over. Its time for you to go. As nick pointed out, though, its not necessarily that simple. And there is also the question of then whats left behind. Reporter well, so far, he hasnt been paying a lot of attention to protests. We saw him yesterday addressing Puerto Ricans through facebook. He hasnt given interviews, and he did signal he will not run for reelection, that he will not he will not be the head of the party any more. But he didnt have any chance, really, of a reelection after this scandal. Right now its the peers that the governor is trying to buy time. But what we saw on the streets, what we saw today, the styles of the protesters, the message they have, and this comes from all different political groups in puerto rico. They dont want him in the governors mansion. They dont want him running the country. He has time. He can play the political game, and hes doing so. The constitution allows him. But you have to understand, puerto rico has a very particular political situation right now. Its a u. S. Territory. It has its own congress. It has its own constitution. It has its own governor. But its under control by a board, this after a very deep financial crisis. So there is a very deep relationship with washington and the frustration they feel, treated as a colonial entity. Not as an independent entity. They want to be some want to be a state, some independent. This doesnt change things, but governor rossello doesnt want to leave. Nick payton walsh, appreciate it. When we look at the conditions in puerto rico, for so many people, they may have first really woken up to what was happening there in the devastation left behind by hurricane maria. That was only in 2017. Government officials, though, for some time have been accused of corruption. And misusing federal disaster aid. Francis santiago is a journalist who lost her aunt, died in puerto rico in the days immediately following hurricane maria. She joins us now. Part of what youre looking at, too, whats happened in the aftermath of hurricane maria. And a lot of what has happened is also bringing people out into the streets right now. Because they are so fed up on so many levels. What are you finding . Whats the situation today . I think what were seeing today, and what we have been seeing in the last ten days of these historic protests is really a country that is, you know, claiming and, you know, raising their voice as to what happened almost two years ago. You know . Hurricane maria left puerto rico in devastation. And i think a lot of people didnt have the time, didnt have the energy, didnt have the resources, to go out and, you know, voice their frustrations. I think what we saw in the 889page chats was very much, you know, the last straw for a lot of Puerto Ricans. So the chat revealed not only homophobic and sexist messages, but also revealed a lot of details about what happened in the months and years after hurricane maria. So it revealed a lot of details about the crisis. Revealed details about how they hid a lot of stories about the death toll in puerto rico and how they planned to lie about it. So what a lot of Puerto Ricans this isnt just about a chat, its much more than that. And part of what we saw in the chat, not just the information, sexism in a lot of these messages. And that speaks to, in your mind, a much broader issue when it comes to the government in puerto rico and the role of women and how women are seen and treated. For sure. A lot of what we saw on the chat was, you know, this group of men. That were basically talking at about, you know, the mayor of san juan mu. These are just top officials. So you can imagine how that extends to, you know, the rest of the female population in puerto rico. So we also saw the governor and his administration mocking the organization in puerto rico calling out for womens rights. And they actually asked the governor last year to declare a state of emergency, because women were being assassinated by their domestic partners in unprecedented numbers. And the governor in the chat is being seen mocking them and mocking their protests. So i think a lot of women today are taking the streets in a symbolism of you might think that you shut us down, but were here. You know, another person speaking about this was saying that in so many ways, this governor and peoples frustration with him has United People from so many different backgrounds. And with so many different issues that are at the top of their specific list. How do you see that energy, the energy were seeing in the streets here in the pouring rain in san juan today. How do you see that energy being channeled moving forward, especially since as we know, the governor has said hes not stepping down. We have to wait to hear from the legislature about impeachment. There is not a clear answer today that some of those demands are going to be met. Yeah. So yesterday, as we all know, he renounced he resigned from his partys presidency and said he wont be seeking reelection. Thats not enough for a lot of Puerto Ricans protesting today. The impeachment process has begun, and in the legislature, and said he would be welcoming an impeachment process. That could take months, years. And next year, as you all know, we have an election, as well. I think for a lot of Puerto Ricans and what ive been seeing from reporting and talking to other people on the ground, it isnt enough for rosello to step down. I think this has United People in unprecedented numbers, and unprecedented ways that has become more about people who want to kind of rethink how they want the government to be run. So i dont think people will be will stop. Just the pro Statehood Party or governor rosello or members of his organization. You have to think, in puerto rico, we have a bipartisanship, like here in the states. That has run puerto rico since, you know, we became a commonwealth of the united states. So i think a lot of people are fed up by that back and forth. And how much pain and disillusionment it has caused. Certainly not the last time well talk about it. Thank you. Thank you. There are new concerns right now that the u. S. Could actually be inching closer to an allout confrontation with iran. President trump on twitter this morning, blasting claims by tehran that its broken up a cia spy ring, arrested 17 iranians for allegedly spying for the u. S. At the white house, President Trump firing back, saying irans actions are making it tougher to resume negotiations at all. They put their finger up in the air, and this this finger, the thumb. They put their finger up in the air, and they disrespected the united states. They shouldnt have done that. That was a big mistake. One of the best things ive done is terminate that ridiculous deal. If they want to make a deal, its frankly, its getting harder for me to want to make a deal with iran. Because they behave very badly. Theyre saying bad things. And ill tell you, it could go either way. Very easily. Very easily. And im okay either way it goes. Cnn pentagon correspondent, barbara starr, with us now. Barbara, you heard the president saying its getting harder for him to make a deal. Hes glad he pulled the u. S. Out of the iran nuclear agreement. Theres been a lot going on, to put it mildly, in the last few days with iran. At the point where we are now, though, bob baer telling me last hour, he thinks iran is really trying to push the u. S. Closer and closer to war, a war he says the u. S. Is not prepared for. What is the sense, what is the talk at the pentagon . Well, the pentagon has been watching President Trumps remarks, obviously, very closely. And the president has several times said hes not looking for war with iran. So these comments today will be of considerable fresh interest. You know, it could go either way. Whats he really talking about . He has said that iran cannot have a Nuclear Weapons program. So you either are going to negotiate it through diplomacy and negotiate it away, or what would the alternative be . In fact, would it be military force . One of the challenges is in a i dont think anybody is looking for war, right . But in the calculation is if you wanted to use force to make iran give up its nuclear program, you cant really just have that single goal. You are automatically talking about full regime change in iran, and that is really just a prospect that seems incredibly difficult, if nothing else the u. S. Has learned over the last 18 years what regime change can drag it into. Especially in the middle east. So i think its a very difficult proposition to see it way ahead on the president s words today. Also hearing from the president today about afghanistan. I just want to play what he had to say earlier. Were like policemen. Were not fighting a war. If we wanted to fight a war in afghanistan and win it, i could win that war in a week. I just dont want to kill 10 million people. Does that make sense to you . I dont want to kill 10 million people. I have plans on afghanistan that if i wanted to win that war, afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the earth. It would be gone. It would be over in literally ten days. And i dont want to do that i dont want to go that route. So were working with pakistan and others to extricate ourselves. Nor do we want to be policemen. Because basically, were policemen right now. And were not supposed to be policemen. These comments, of course, coming from the oval office today. The president meeting with pakistans Prime Minister today. He says he has plans certainly not the first time we have heard the president say he wants troops out of afghanistan, talking about help from pakistan. Do we have any better sense about what that plan is, barbara . Well, a negotiated settlement with pakistans help, if pakistan could make it work, they could close off that border with afghanistan and really dry up the flow of terrorists coming across into afghanistan. Thats been one of the big problems over the years. Its a very poor sport. Pakistan does not control it well. People go back and forth. And thats to a large extent how these terrorist populations keep coming into afghanistan. As for the president s remarks, that he could, you know, o obliterate afghanistan, but doesnt want to kill 10 million people, lets have common sense here. Military orders have to be legal, moral, ethical and use proportional force. So any prospect of meeting the president s rhetoric is just really not realitybased. He has talked in the past about, you know, a semi obliteration strategy. Today afghanistan, iran, north korea, these are not realistic military strategies to achieve military goals. Barbara starr, always appreciate it. Thank you. Sure. Up next, President Trump continuing his attacks on four democratic congresswomen. Today saying theyre not very smart. Also insisting there is no racial tension. This as one of those congresswomen is reiterating her calls for impeachment. The president defending his racist tweets aimed at four democratic congresswomen for more than a week now and even saying more, calling them unamerican, saying theyre bad. Today the president was asked again about those comments, and specifically about racial tensions. Take a listen. Congresswomen, what they have said about israel, what they have said about our country, when they talk about disgusting people, when they talk the way they talk, when the one mentioned that brown people should speak for brown people. And muslim people should speak for muslim people. And you hear all of this. Its not what our country is all about. No, i think theyre very bad for our country. I think theyre very bad for the democrat party. I think you see that, and theyre pulling the democrats way left. Nobody knows how to handle them. I feel theyre easy to handle. To me, theyre easy to handle. Because theyre just out there. Theyre very bad for our country. Absolutely. [ inaudible question ] no, no. No racial tension. No, no, theres no racial tension. Look. And as for those remarks outside of washington, how is all of this rhetoric playing . Well, lets take you to illinois, and get this. A photo shopped image posted Illinois Republican county facebook page. It depicts the four congresswomen as the jihad squad. The image has been taken down. It included the caption, political jihad is their game. And if you dont agree with their socialist ideology, youre racist. The president posting the statement, quote, a couple days ago, an image not authorized by me on the illinois county republican chairmans association. It has been deleted. Going on to say, i am sorry if anyone who saw the image was offended by the contents. Abdula mitchell is the executive director of the council of islamic organizations of greater chicago and joins us now. Appreciate you taking the time to be with us. I have to ask first, what was your reaction when you saw that photoshopped image and the caption, as well . Reporter well, my reaction, as many muslims and lets say people of color is offended. It was disrespectful. Xenophobic, racist. But more importantly, it brought a moment of concern. Concern that now how, as a country, are we dealing with dissent. To merely characterize the messenger and assassinate the messenger, as opposed to substantively dealing with the issues that are being raised by these four women, ignores the real principles of what this country is about. And that is free debate. It is not to say to merely oppose the policies of this administration or the views of republican party, now to be characterized as one, youre not even a citizen. You go back to your country when these three other people were actually born here. It really ignores the real crux of the problem is, when do we as a country begin to address the substantive issues that are facing us as a nation . Not merely engaging in the practice of assassinating the messengers. You know, youve also said that these types of images i know in your mind cut short productive conversations. And thats sort of what you were touching on there. Where are we missing the boat on those productive conversations. How do you bring it back you can sit down with people trying to tackle the same problem coming at it with different viewpoints, republican, democrat, somewhere else, maybe not even belonging to a party . How do you get to a place where there can be a productive conversation right now . Clearly, thats the challenge. And the it can start from the white house. Where you have discourse addressed to the issues. And not to call someone, they dont love this country, which muslims have been characterized as. To say theyre socialists, regardless of their political philosophy. What it really comes down, how are we going to address the issue of Climate Change . How are we going to address the issue of the asylumseekers at our borders . How are we going to address the crisis in health care . None of these issues are being discussed by this administration. Its just those that bring viewpoints counter to what their narrative is. They are unamerican. They need to go back to the country they came from. So thats where the process must begin. And were to hold political leaders, on both sides of the aisle, but particularly this particular administration to hold them to account and give answers to the issues. Not to attack those that oppose them. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib spoke this morning at the annual Naacp Convention and addressed some of what weve been talking about. I want to play some of what she had to say for you. We need bold action, folks. And i know whats happening out there. You know, there is all of this young women, and its beyond just the four of us. The squad is all of you. And i can tell you, theres you are all the squad. Trust me. If you support equity, you support justice, you are one of us. Yeah, im not going nowhere not until i impeach this president are you happy with the way that congresswoman tlaib and the other three women who have been targeted, with the way theyre handling this and their message . In handling the message, once again, i would prefer that the attack address the issues. Whether or not its going to be impeachment, impeachment, all its going to do is further polarize both sides. Because were not addressing the issues as they are. And that is incumbent thats what needs to take place today. To begin to address the issues. And to the extent that we have a process or addressing the issues by attacking the messengers, then we will not achieve a substantive solution to our problems. Its going to be continued polarization, and then were going to see an uptick further uptick in what i would call a hate crime. How people react to those particularly. I certainly hope thats not all these women have increased threats against their live. Right. Lets hope that is not where this ends up, in an increase in hate crimes. Abdullah mitchell, appreciate you joining us today, sir. Thank you. We did reach out to the Illinois Republican party, to their chairman, tim schneider, and the county chairmans association, their president , mark shaw. We asked them to join us. Stunning new Court Documents show Drug Companies shipped millions of hundreds of doses of opioids to just two ohio counties. Cuyahoga and summit counties are at the center of a lawsuit against the makers and distributors of the powerful pain killers. Now by law, Drug Companies must monitor and report suspicious orders. And while the lawsuit says the companies knew about the massive drug orders, it claims they failed to report them. Cnns jean casarez is following the developments for us. There are also some outrageous emails uncovered in all of this. And that is their evidence. They believe the emails show the state of mind, knowledge and intent of these people that legally are allowed to distribute opioids. And they say because of that, they have a responsibility, a responsibility they did not care about. Lets look. January 27th, 2009, an email from mallen krot pharmaceuticals, shipping oxycodone overnight. His contact was steve cochran. And he writes to him, keep em comin, flynn flyin out of here. Its like people are addicted to these things or something. Oh, wait, people are. And he responds, just like doritos, keep eating, well make more. Hes also alleged to have described his job as ship, ship, ship. Another email from borelli, if you are low, order more. If you are okay, order a little more. And joked that his client should actually destroy the email but then said, nah, is that really possible . Oh, well. And that information right there is what the plaintiffs are saying that there should be a conclusion, and this is the largest case in this country so far with over 400 defendants, that they did violate the substances control act in not reporting any suspicious orders. They didnt have a plan in place to even monitor suspicious orders. That they participated because they were making money. It is leaves you speechless. Jean, thank you. Joining us are travis and Shelly Bornstein who lost their son tyler to opioid addiction at the age of 23. Today they are working to raise awareness and to combat the shame and the stereotypes that can often surround addiction, and theyre doing that through the organization hope united, which they founded. We hear what jean just laid out for us there. Talk about laying out in stark detail. This is just like doritos in terms of how these drugs were flooding ohio. Travis, when you hear that, whats your reaction . Well, its shocking, to be honest. Its absolutely shocking that we would have people put profits over people and flood our communities with these kinds of addicting drugs. You know, and thats kind of what happened with my son. He had broken his right arm four times, and he had two surgeries on his right elbow. His first surgery was at age 11. And his second surgery was at age 18. And ultimately, he became addicted to the opioid prescription pain pills. And, you know, for us, for the next five years, our life looked like relapse and recovery. Relapse and recovery. And then on september 28th of 2014, my son was in the process of overdosing, and the person he was with dumped him in a vacant lot and left him there to die. And they found him the next day. And so there is no doubt in my mind that the overprescribing of opiate prescription pain pills has led us to the worst drug epidemic in the history of our country. And i think there are many people who would agree with you. And it certainly changed the conversation, which it needed to, in terms of what those principles prescriptions are, how much is given to people and for what. Shelly, with all of this, i know that both you and travis have talked a little bit about initially you were ashamed. You were embarrassed. Why . Well, theres a certain stigma with drug addiction. And the majority of the public dont really understand. And definitely back then the public didnt understand how people were getting addicted to the pain meds. I think were a little more aware of it now. But, yeah. Theres a stigma attached with addiction, whatever that addiction is. Yeah, its looked at as like a moral failure versus the disease that it is. And, you know, i keep saying, you know, as a society, we have to understand this as a chronic brain disease that it is. And as long as we think its a moral failure, were not going to solve this problem. You know, i know youve also talked about we as a society needing to understand that you have to feel pain. And there does seem to be more of a conversation, as you point out, in the last couple of years. But there is also a push for you to not feel pain when you have a procedure done, whatever it may be. Ive told this story before. My 7yearold injured his arm. It wasnt broken. And he was offered one of these prescription pain killers in the er. The fact that we dont know how to deal with pain as a society is even bigger, frankly, travis, youve said, than just talking about prescription pain killers. Yeah. So, i mean, you know, thats you hit it right on the head. As a society, we think we should be painfree. And the fact is, life is not painfree. And so what we do is, we try to mask our pain with drugs or alcohol instead of embrace the pain in our life. And the fact is and, you know, i dont argue for no opiates. There is certainly a part of end of life and there is times when you do need an opiate. But, you know, to give someone 40 vicodin after they had a root canal or their wisdom teeth taken out is criminal. Is criminal. I know, shelly, theres always talk about what does justice look like for you, what could be different. You, though, have founded hope united. You want to help other families who are struggling with addiction. Talk to us about that work, shelly. Well, we have a strong desire to help, where we saw the gaps that tyler fell in. We have a strong desire to help people find hope, something we never really saw during our journey. So weve kind of yeah. I mean, just sharing our story, you know, what we learned in that, was it gave other people the opportunity to share their stories. Because our story is the story thats happening all across this country. Someone gets routinely hurt in a car accident or sports injury or so forth, and they get addicted to these opiate prescription pain pills. And so we just encourage families that theres no shame with the disease of addiction, just like there is no shame in cancer or Heart Disease or diabetes. And so we have to we have to understand it is a disease, and as shelly said, we just really want to see we dont ever want to see this happen to another family. And so we just try to encourage and offer hope. Well, it is hope united. And i think in so many ways you are offering hope to a number of people. And also giving them license to speak out and to know theyre not alone. Travis, Shelly Bornstein, it is a pleasure speaking with you. Obviously, we wish it wasnt under these circumstances. But really appreciate everything youre doing. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. We appreciate the opportunity to be here. Tech reporter brian fung joins me now. Brian, up to 700 million. Where does that payout go, and will victims of the data breach see any of it . Well, equifax isnt paying the 700 million up front. The first thing its going to do is pay 300 million into a fund that will go towards refunding consumers for things like credit freezes or credit monitoring or Identity Theft monitoring. Services that consumers paid out of pocket for. Equifax could add another 125 million to that fund if it runs low. But, you know, right now its just paying that 300 million up front.
