U. S. And indian intelligence agencies warned about attacks but the countrys Prime Minister was kept in the dark. The government is now apologizing after admitting it failed to act on multiple warnings prior to the deadly easter blasts. Explosions went off at three churches during Worship Services there while suicide bombers targeted four Luxury Hotels. At least four u. S. Citizens are among the dead according to one u. S. Official and we are just learning the identities of two of them. A fifth grader from washington d. C. His na and also a man on a business trip from denver, an employee of pearson textbook publishing. This purports to show the moment when bombs went off at st. Anthonys cathedral. At st. Havesebastians church, are lining up shoes and clothing to identify the dead. And they are blocking facebook and instagram which they say have been recently used to incite violence. Its difficult for people to make contacts with loved ones still missing. We are in colombo, the capital of sri lanka. Tell me more about the attack and who are investigators are thinking was behind it . Reporter brooke, you dont need to look any further than this road right here. Its normally a very busy, bustling touristfilled thoroughfa thoroughfare. It is dead tonight aside from the police and heavily Armed Security officers and soldiers out here on patrol. Theres a curfew in effect throughout the city. People dont want to go outside. They dont want to be in public areas. They dont know if this Terror Network their government is telling them about, telling them the government was warned about and ignored the warnings, they dont know if its going to strike again. At this stage we know six suicide bombers have been identified. These are guys seen on security video walking into High End Hotels with backpacks. One of them is closed right now. And two others within a couple hundred meters of where im standing. They walked into the hotel buffet, blew themselves up, walked into churches full of worshippers and blew themselves up. They found 87 detonators. They found a pipe bomb on the way to the airport. Theyre looking for more suspects. They dont know how big this terror group is. The u. S. Believes its likely isis inspired based on the sophistication, the shock value, the targets, foreigners and christians. They dont know if isis was directly involved. These are all unanswered questions. You have hotels like this one where guests have to have their luggage sniffed by bombsniffing dogs. People are nervous. This is reminding them of the 26year civil war they had in the country that ended ten years ago. There used to be a lot of suicide bombings. People thought sri lanka moved past that. Y now bars are sitting empty. Nobody wants to be anywhere where the public is assembled. So that is the situation on the ground here. The terrorists at least in the short term have gotten their way. They have scared people off the streets and theres a state of emergency expected to go into effect within the next 30 minutes. The government trying to do everything they can to contain the situation. Shutting down social media and the city itself so they can go anywhere they need as quickly as possible to search for the suspects. Such a beautiful country. And popular among vacationers and ten years of peace and now this. Will ripley, thank you very much. As we try to get some answers here, one of the six explosions took place at the slang ra la hotel. A celebrity chef by the name of shanta who was popular in india and the uk. Her daughter apparently posted this image on facebook minutes before they were both killed in the explosions. And a father from the uk, Ben Nicholson just confirmed his wife anita, 14yearold son alex and 11yearold daughter anna bell were all killed in a blast. He wrote anita was a wonderful, perfect wife and a brilliant loving and inspirational mother to our two wonderful children. Alex and annabell were the most amazing, intelligent, talented and thoughtful children. Anita and i were immensely proud of them both and looking forward to seeing them develop into adulthood. They shared with their mother the priceless ability to light up a room they entered and bring joy to the lives of all they came into contact with. We are told the attacks were inspired by isis. We have an expert on extremism and terrorism and a Senior Research fellow at the institute for strategic dialogue. Amar, thank you for being on with me. I was reading your tweets, and you said you have been studying this for 15 years and have never seen anything like this attack. How do you mean . Well, its just a tragic set of events. I study both sri lanka as well as terrorism more broadly. And my work on sri lanka is mostly dealing with the context of the war, post war reconstruction and things like that. So when i woke up to this kind of news, it was a kind of weird world colliding moment for me where everything kind of came together. And we havent seen these kinds of attacks at this scale and this caliber in sri lanka since the middle of the war. It was kind of a complete shock to me in terms of the number of people involved and the sophistication of the weapons and the bombs involved. When you look it was pretty surprising. When you add to it the timing, the target, for people not as similar with sri lanka, 7. 4 percent of them are christians. This happened easter sunday. Targeting christians during one of the most holy days on the calendar. Why this target . What would this suggest to you . I think the target selection is actually what is the key point that suggests to me this was probably at least inspired by international terrorist, a group of some kind whether its alqaeda or isis. Local grievances, particularly in the Muslim Community, they have really no reason to kind of target tourists, and churches and things like that. The grievance of the Muslim Community is largely with the state and the grievance of the other community is largely with the state, and there were celebrations new years celebrations in sri lanka going on all last week. Religious events all last week and Nothing Happened in any of these events. So this kind of bizarre focus on the Christian Community out of nowhere really, suggests to me that this isnt kind of born out of local grievances or local groups that just kind of planning and plotting locally. That there was some kind of inspiration probably some kind of guidance from abroad. But as of i checked isis channels before i came on here. Still no claim from isis or al qaeda. Its a bizarre situation where it seems like the target selection likely points abroad. Six suicide bombers. 87 detonators found by police. A bus station in one. Investigators say this was highly coordinated. What do you make of all of that . Yeah. Sri lanka is not kind of new to the attacks in its capital city. During the civil war there were countless attacks on buses and other sites in the capital city. That was a long time ago, and weve had ten years after relative stability with very little bombs going off, and so this kind of came as a complete shock to people. Not only that there was a attack but that the level of sophistication with this many people involved coming out of nowhere was, i think, quite a surprise for people. Coming out of nowhere. And youre seeing a lot of the yeah. No. Exactly. Amar, thank you so much for your voice and all of this. We appreciate you. Were going to come back to this story here in the developments of sri lanka. First the battle lines between the Trump White House and democrats got more entrerchled. President trump and his sons are now suing House Democrats. In particular, Elijah Cummings to block a congressional subpoena of the president s financial records. The House Oversight committee issued that subpoena. It was just last week in the lawsuit trumps lawyers accuse democrats of being singularly on saysed with finding something they can use to damage the president politically. Harel harelipman is a former u. S. Attorney. There any precedent for this kind of thing . Ill tell you one thing theres not a precedent for. The president suing members of congress personally. Theres all kinds of doctrines that make it normally that the president would not sue Elijah Cummings. Thats unprecedented. The arguments are close to unprecedented. The arguments are no valid legislative purpose. Its the exact opposite, ironically, of what trump said to defend his actions in the immigration case. You have to defer to me. You cant second guess. Here hes saying no valid legislative purpose of oversight, and yet, we just saw when Michael Cohen testified theres a lot of standard oversight that congress would be going into. An unprecedented parties, and a nearly unprecedented set of arguments. Well, as we all know congresss job is oversight. The president s lawyers are claiming, quotes the lawsuit that chairman couplings has ignored the constitutional limits on congresss power to investigate. Investigations are legitimate only in so far as they further some legitimate legislative purpose. Is that an accurate assessment of congressional investigative powers . Its an accurate assessment, but t easily met here. You have to have a valid legislative purpose. You cant do it for the heck of it, but its clear that its broad what the purposes could be, and we have someone who has been misstating his income or possibly that leads to a lot of possible concerns. And very obvious oversight responsibilities as happened with cohen, and its just going to be a hard slog. And as to all the statements, again, the opposite of trump versus hawaii when they said ignore what i said about the muslims and watch what i do. And here the same thing. Yes, theres political back and forth, but the question is is there a valid legislative purpose and you have to defer to the Congress Just as you had to to the executives. He has an uphill battle. You mentioned a hard slog. Whats the next step for democrats . Where does this go . This particular suit goes to the District Court. And if they the District Court country allow it, theyll get the subpoena. Theyll get the information from the third party, the Accountant Firm that trump is trying to keep from turning over. Then what do they do with this Financial Information . That and the 438page report and the other information theyre going, thats their big political and i would say moral quandary. How much are they going to probe knowing the difficulties of an ultimate end game that involves impeachment . Thats a really big question. Harry, good to see you. Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. Just in, House Speaker nancy pelosi wrote a let tore democrats ahead of the big Conference Call tonight on a potential impeachment of President Trump. Hear what she says. And Rudy Giuliani claims theres nothing wrong with taking information from russians. Well ask a retired cia chief what he thinks about that. And its the biggest field ever. Now another democrat just jumped in as we expect even more. How does each stand out . Well talk about that. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Onmillionth order. R. There goes our first big order. 44, 45, 46. How many of these did they order . Ooh, thats hot. You know, we could sell these. Nah. We dont bake. Opportunity. What we deliver by delivering. Yeah, and now business is rolling in. Get started at fastsigns. Com. Up on capitol hill the divide over what to do about the Mueller Report and how to do it is causing public headaches were democrats. Today nancy pelosi will attempt to unify her caucus when she holds a Conference Call to discuss the next steps. In a letter sent to her colleagues Speaker Pelosi says President Trump has, quote, at a minimum engaged in highly unethical behavior. She goes onto address the friction adding while is views range from investigating or proceeding to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth. And she added that it is her words, also important to know that the truth can be gained outside of impeachment hearings. From the House Speaker there. For President Trumps inner circle the Mueller Report is already in the rearview mirror. And Rudy Giuliani is back at a familiar role trying to influence the court of Public Opinion while down playing muellers findings on contacts between the Trump Campaign and russia. Any candidate in the whole world in america would take information negative from a foreign source . From a hostile foreign source . Who says its illegal . Theres nothing wrong with taking informations from russians . It depends on where it came from. Steve hall is a Cnn National Security analyst and a retired cia agent. Let me begin with ellie, one of our cnn analysts responding to Rudy Giuliani by citing u. S. Law. Dhs this is what he tweeted. It shall will unlawful for a person to solicit accept or receive a contribution or donation from a foreign national. Is there as Rudy Giuliani claims nothing wrong with taking information from russia . Make your case for me. Theres all sorts of things wrong with it. And Rudy Giuliani makes the distinction in his comment there. Is there anything illegal about it or is anything wrong about it . Those are two different distinctions you can talk about ethics and what the law is. Look, Rudy Giuliani is either just being extremely quaint, or what hes doing is hes supporting his employers in the white house. Ill leave that to viewers to figure out. If anybody came to me and said im a candidate for office or im a politician hear in the United States, or im considering running or even if im a rich businessman, i would argue very they need to be very thoughtful and careful about who they deal with talking about the russian government or any other adversarial nation. The russians are poised to take advantage of this. When you watch the interview with Rudy Giuliani being asked if he would take money from a foreign source. He said he wouldnt and would have advised against it out of an abundance of caution. So why advise someone not to do something is there is, quote, nothing wrong. Theres clearly from a counterintelligence perspective, all sorts of things that can go wrong. Russians are looking to gain access and leverage and be able to blackmail and do those sorts of things. What i would argue we need to do, and im not a lawyer. I would argue that we need to tighten up the regulations and statutes and the laws so you cant make that distinction that Rudy Giuliani tried to make. That there might be something wrong, but its not illegal. We ought to make that stuff illegal. It gets into our democratic process which is no place for russia to be. Speaking of other adversarial nations, there is an election coming up, and if the president s top lawyer says there is nothing to see here, my question is what signal does that send to other nations . Not just russia. Other nations around the world . Sure. Its open season. And again, from a counterintelligence perspective, you kind of shudder. Everybody is going to be trying to influence and theyve seen what russia has been able to do and theyve seen from the Mueller Report the at least initial response that people can walk away from this and suffer maybe not significant legal consequences unless you end up getting caught lying or Something Like that to congress. But the act of accepting this information and cooperating with, talking to foreign governments when it comes to our electoral process, that needs to be tightened up. I would challenge congress to tighten up the laws. They need the money. Its going to be a tough row to hoe. Open season. Steve, thank you very much. Good to have you back. Sure. There is now a new candidate in the 2020 president ial race. If he won the 40yearold veteran would be the youngest president ever. But is he so different from all the rest . By the time we get to the end of this week, a record 20 democrats will have announced theyre running for president. Were still waiting on joe biden who is also expected to announce sometime this week. Not only is this the first diverse field in modern political history. This is the largest surpassing the 17 republicans who ran for the nomination back in 2016. So we go to cnn politics reporter and editor at large here with a closer look at who is in and how they stand out. Okay. This is easy. Who is in is basically everyone. Problem solved. Back to you. And were done. Try to analyze this. Ive snuck my head into one of these head shots. Not true. Theres so many people running for president. This does not include, by the way, this is not including joe biden. So this does not include everyone who we expect to be in the race as you said by the end of the week. A quick point here before we go on. Why are there so many candidates . Why is this the largest amount in political history . Because running for president is good political business and Good Business generally speaking. Not everyone here is running to win. Some people running to get their name in. Seth moulton, massachusetts congressman, very unlikely to win. Donald trump is president so i never say cant win. Unlikely. Will run. Will be on a debate stage. Maybe hes mentioned in the cabinet or mentioned as high as v. P. If a democrat loses, he comes around again in four years and says i ran last time. I had a message that needed to succeed. Im running again. Theres a top tier here. Sanders, Bernie Sanders, biden, harris, buttigieg. I put klobuchar in the to be fivish. Everybody else running for a chance of catching fire or being in a cabinet or getting their name out there. Lets go. Its not you mentioned t not just big. Its diverse across a lot of things. Okay. This is we have six sitting senators. Remember, theres only 47 democratic senators. One out of every seven of them are basically running for office. We have six either current members of congress or former members of congress. Two mayors. We actually have four total mayors. Two governors, used to be mayors. The big mayor is pete buttigieg. Hes one of the people in town halls in New Hampshire this evening. One former obama administration. Two former governors and two people with no political experience. Thats interesting over here. I only highlight it because remember, donald trump was someone with no political experience. Hes currently the president. Prior to him we had never elected someone who wasnt a military figure or who had never held a political office. This is their diversity. Kamala harris, first indian and African American senator in california to the senate. We have Elizabeth Warren and African American candidates, castro, a hispanic. We have a large number of female candidates. This looks a lot like the modern democratic party. Diverse. On the young end, although Bernie Sanders and biden in their 70s. You can get whatever you want here. A lot of people are going to get a taste. Well see who lasts. I think thats the real question. You cant complain that you dont have enough choices or people who dont fit what you want. You have at least 20 of them by the end of the week. That is your second baskinrobbins reference in about a week. Im very, very hungry. Heres my followup to you. Lets fast forward two days. Joe biden jumps in. We know hes wanted to be president. Hes tried. Hes going to try again. How does he and we know how hes been doing in the polls and hes not in. How does he shake up this massive field . In some ways he doesnt shake it up that much. Weve expected him to be in for so long. I mean, he gave an interview two weeks ago prior to easter where he was saying well, my lawyers say what i can say, but we all knew he was going to be in. Him being in creates sort of the hes the establishment front runner. Okay . No question. He probably will be for the foreseeable future in the race. What do people do in relation to him and sanders . I view them as the twin polls here in the race. Sanders representing sort of outsider unapologetic liberalism. Biden a continuation of obama policy as well as establishment guy. Was in the senate for 30 plus years. 8 years as a v. P. Theres the polls around which everyone is going to react and revol revolve. It doesnt mean theyll be the nominees. Look at polling and name i. D. And the factors we recognize. Theyre the polls. Everybody else reacts and interreacts around the two of them until further notice. Got it. Got it. Chris, thank you. Also baskinrobbins. I know. You totally have me thinking about it as well. From ice cream to town halls chris mentioned all the folks. A huge night on cnn. Join us live from New Hampshire for the first major candidate event of the 2020 president ial campaign. Klobuchar, warren, sanders, harris, buttigieg. Theyre all getting on the same stage back to back for a cnn town hall event. Its tonight at 7 00 eastern on cnn. There you have it. Reporter sheriff gregory tony says he is committed to accountability. He is also essentially telling the community to take a collective breath and to trust the investigative process. The video is difficult to watch. It shows a Broward County sheriffs deputy pepper spray a student in the face. How many times do you get to obstruct justice as the president of the United States . The mueller document has now left us with a road map to go forward. What are they hearing from across the aisle . Not much other than time to move on. We have a congressman with us. Good to be with you. You tweeted no republican can spin the Mueller Report. Do you think thats why theyve been so quiet . Yeah. You know, brooke, when you think about it, here we are four days later. What is that report . And i reread it this weekend. Its an incredibly damming portrait of President Trump. He knew russia interfered. He welcomed and encouraged that interference. He lied. He encouraged everybody who worked for him to lie, and then he blocked the investigation. He obstructed the investigation. Criminal behavior who knows . But boy, dishonest, immoral, unethical . Heck yes, it is. And ill tell you, brooke, every republican on capitol hill agrees with what i just said. They cant see that publicly. Well, mitt romney did speak out or did say he was sickened and that he was appalled by the findings in the Mueller Report. He also said that business of government can move on. Do you think that was strong enough, or is this like a conflict of consciousness for republicans right now . Look, its brooke, its politics. The republicans in the senate and the house, my former colleagues, theyre afraid to speak up. They want to get reelected. 80 to 90 of the Republican Base still supports this president. Thats all they care about. Its unfortunate, isnt it . Its weird that the democrats and the house, theyre in the tough position. They have to decide what to do with this. Nobody is asking the republicans to do the decent thing and join the democrats in going after this really unethical behavior. Would you support a 2020 challenge from a mitt romney or another republican . I think this president needs a challenge. Im not trying to be careful, brooke, with what i said. I do believe this president needs a challenge. Look, you, again, you read this report, and i dont know how anybody can read this report and think this is behavior that we want in our president. I mean, think about that. Thats a difficult thing to say, but thats the truth. In the report, the special counsel says trumps attempts to interfere with the russia investigation failed only because his staff refused to carry out his dpanemands. This is how he responded when asked about it. Reporter you worried your staff is ignoring your orders . Nobody disobeys my orders. Nobody disobeys my orders is what the president said, but they do disobey his orders, and it possibly saved his presidency. What do you think of that . It probably yeah, it probably saved his hide. People ask me on the radio all the time what i most dislike about this president. And it was right there. You cant believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Not a single word. He knows deep down. Hes been told that his people did disobey his orders. And that did save his hide. But everything he says is a lie, and i just look, the republicans on capitol hill, they know he lies all the time. I dont know how they can sit with that. But if you were still on capitol hill, and i hear you on the self muzzling and this is all about politics and getting reelected. Lets be real. Would you be able to say the things you were saying to me right now if you were still in congress . Yes, without a doubt, and trump would probably fund a primary opponent. Look, im on conservative talk radio. This is thats not easy tur to have say what i say about trump, because we all want to be like shaean hannity and all we care about is ratings. I cant be that way. If i had to be, ill go sell coffee somewhere. You got to speak the truth. And these republicans are going to have to because its going to get worse with this president. Former congressman joe walsh, thank you very much. Thanks, brooke. President trump is going to court fighting to stop House Democrats from getting his financial records.
