That indictment is really very tight. Some of the evidence is right there and hes going to have to explain away facts that are not easily explained away. Hes claiming, for example, he was joking when he was trying to intimidate somebody, that they did this all the time. Well, the witness who was intimidated doesnt feel that way. Im talking about randy credico. He is facing on the face term of the statutes 50 years if hes convicted on everything. I doubt he will be convicted on everything, but its possible because mueller is very good and prosecutors dont bring cases in the federal system unless they really, really have a reasonable belief boy that took time to get out its okay. That they can succeed in court and i think he can, so roger probably under the sentencing guidelines may probably about five year sentence is what hes faced. On the flip side, how likely is it that roger stone thinks trump will pardon him . I think he i think he is hopeful of that. He is certainly sending messages to trump. He says he hasnt talked to him in a while and obviously it would be an admission of guilt to say i want a pardon because in effect, when you accept a pardon, you have admitted youre guilty of all the offenses youre charged of. I dont know that roger needs one yet or i dont think trump politically could do anything for him before 2020 and he could do it maybe on the way out the door in 2020 or 2021 or if he gets reelected, then he might consider it. When you look at someone like roger stone, who obviously idolizes richard nixon, the tattoo on the mans back, the v for victory here, the relics all through his home, here you are john dean with your famous history with president nixon, what do you think of roger stones choice of hero . Well, i initially thought nixon was a potentially great president. When i got inside the inner circle, i realized i wasnt he wasnt what i thought he was and we obviously had a parting of the ways. Roger seems to have learned all the wrong lessons from watergate and nixon. In other words, dirty tricks are fine. Ignoring the law is fine. Abusing power is fine. But his day of reckoning is coming when nixon might not be such an attractive role model. Matt whitaker, the acting ag making quite the statement yesterday during a News Conference that had nothing to do with the mueller investigation. Here he was. Ive been fully briefed on the investigation and, you know, i look forward to director mueller delivering the final report, but right now, the investigation is, i think, close to being completed and i hope that we can get the report from director mueller as soon as possible. So his comments there, do you think that was just a total off the cuff moment or was that orchestrated . That didnt seem like an orchestrated moment. In fact, i had a couple readings on that. He was so unprepared he really kind of botched it and said more than he might have said. If they were going to make an announcement at that time, i think it would have been a little bit clearer. This business about his reviewing things was very fuzzy and very unclear let me stop you and ask you about that. When he said the special counsels decision will be reviewed by the department of justice, john dean, what does that even mean . Well, he has that power, but it sounds more like hes looking at potential future actions that the special counsel might be taking rather than looking at a report which was the question of when he was going to wind things up. Theres nothing to review when windup comes. Its over. I dont i also read this another way. Heres a guy thats about to lose his job. Uhhum. Hes the acting attorney general. Hes been the chiefofstaff. Hes looking for another job. He wants to show trump how tough he is and how hes in his corner, so he went out and bullied the special counsel a little bit and said, you know, get your report in here because im telling you its over. That could be another way to read the conversation. Got it. John dean, thank you very much. Good to see you, sir. Thanks, brooke. Now to the 2020 campaign and if california senator Kamala Harris thought she was getting a lot of attention for announcing a president ial bid, she should probably brace herself for what is to come after saying she backs medicare for all. It is inhumane to make people go through a system where they cannot literally receive the benefit of what medical science can offer. Because some Insurance Company has decided it doesnt meet their bottom line in terms of their profit motivation. That is inhumane. So just to followup, just to followup on that and correct me if i am wrong, to reiterate, you support the medicare for all bill initially cosponsored by bernie sanders. I believe it will eliminate private insurance, so for people out there who like their insurance, they dont get to keep it . Well, listen, the idea is that everyone gets access to medical care and you dont have to go through the process of going through an Insurance Company having them give you approval, going through the paper work, all of the delay that may require. Who have not had that situation, where youve got to wait for approval and the doctor says i dont know if your Insurance Company is going to cover this . Lets eliminate all of that and move on. Who knows how easy moving on will be. Her comments came last night during our cnn town hall with iowa voters and by this morning one of her potential rivals, Howard Schultz was seizing on the senators remarks. You just played senator harris as saying she wants to abolish the Insurance Industry. Thats not correct. Thats not american. Whats next . What industry are we going to abolish next . The coffee industry . The republicans want to get rid of the Affordable Care act. I dont agree with that. The Affordable Care act should stay and it should be refined, but to think we should get rid of the Insurance Industry, again, this is exactly the situation its far too extreme on both sides and the silent majority of america does not have a voice. There are no shortage of opinions when it comes to medicare for all, what that could mean for the u. S. Health Care Industry and also the u. S. Economy. Lets just focus in on facts. With me now julie rove nnerrove welcome. First of all, what does medicare for all really mean . Well, that is the big question. What it means to the people who are touting it, the purest form is what senator harris is talking about. It would get rid of the private Insurance Industry and have the government basically pay all medical bills. It wouldnt be the kind of socialized medicine they have in england where the provider system is also run by the government, the doctors get paid a government salary and the hospitals are provided by the government. It would be much more like the Medicare Program we have now in the United States where the government pays the bills, but the care is provided privately. There are, however, as weve seen in fairly recent Public Opinion polls, a very deep misunderstanding by the public about what it means. The public thinks it means everybody gets health care and there are lots of different ways to do that that would not involve getting rid of the private Insurance Industry. What would even a transition from our Current System look like . Well, thats a really good question and that was always going to be one of the big debates about whether you want to go to a pure medical for all system or even just what some democrats are calling a medicare for more system, where younger people could buy in or people in the individual market could buy in to medicare as, you know, as a public option, how things would have to change, how payment would have to change. What would happen to the Insurance Industry which is the health Insurance Industry is a large multibillion dollar industry and what would become of those people. Bernie sanders who has been pushing this has been asked that. We havent seen what that transition might look like. And then, of course, the costs. Let me just play some sound. This is Mike Bloomberg on the cost of medicare for all. This was the mayor earlier today. I think you could never afford that. Youre talking about trillions of dollars. I think you can have medicare for all for people that are uncovered, but because thats a Smaller Group and a lot of them are taking care of medicaid already. But to replace the entire private system where companies provide health care for their employees would bankrupt us for a very long time. Julie, would it bankruptcy the country for a long time . Hard to say. Certainly there would be a huge shift of private sector funding to Public Sector funding. Taxes would have to go up. Many people might pay the same or less. Sick people would probably pay less. Weve had a bunch of private estimates about what this might cost and theyve been argued by people on all sides. One of the interesting things is now with the democratic majority in the house theyve asked the Congressional Budget Office to do an estimate about what this might cost and how it might work and i think well all be very interested to see that when they finish it which will be in a couple of months. Senator harris was a cosponsor of the Bernie Sanderss medicare for all bill he introduced a year and a half ago and he proposed for paying for it as follows, with a 7. 5 payroll tax on employers, a 4 individual income tax and higher taxes on the wealthy. Does that math add up . Thats what the Congressional Budget Office is going to tell us. A number of people have tried to estimate that and there have been arguments about it. There are a lot more assumptions that go into it than just those taxes and how much it will take. Were eager to see a nonpartisan estimator come out im sure theyll be arguments over that also whatever they come out with. If you were going to do it in congress, youll have to get the Congressional Budget Office to do an estimate any way. We might as well know upfront what they think is going to cost. We should talk again when we get those hard numbers. This is something weve been hearing from so many democrats. Thank you so much. Sure. Coming up next, breaking with the president. Americas top intelligence officials, fbi, cia, director of National Intelligence, totally contradicting President Trump today when it comes to the most serious threats facing the u. S. Liberty mutual insurance. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Americas top intelligence officials breaking with the white house today on the chief threats facing the country right now laying it out at this sobering hearing this morning before the Senate Intelligence committee. You had the heads of the fbi, cia, director of National Intelligence all warning the country must still be wary of russia come 2020, also that isis is still a threat as in not defeated and north korea is highly unlikely to give up its Nuclear Weapons. All of this contradictory to the president s often expressed rosier view. Theres still a substantial military capacity that kim jongun wields. We currently assess that north korea will seek to retain its wmd capabilities and is unlikely to complete give up its Nuclear Weapons and production capabilities because its leaders ultimately view Nuclear Weapons as critical to regime survival. The group has returned to its gorilla warfare routes while continuing to plot attacks. Isis is intent on resurging and still commands thousands of fighters in iraq and syria. Since our departure from the deal they have abided by the concerns, at the current moment yes, theyre making some preparations that would increase their ability to take a step back if they make that decision. We assess that foreign actors will view the 2020 u. S. Elections as an opportunity to advance their interests. Not only have the russians continued to do it in 2018, but weve seen an indication that theyll continuing to adapt their model and other countries are taking a very interested eye in that approach. My next guest has considerable expertise on nuclear and Security Issues all of which took center stage in todays hearing. She serve as the white house coordinator for policy in the obama administration. She was also the deputy secretary at the Energy Department under president obama. Liz, good to have you on. Lets just begin with the sound we just played. On iran and russia and isis, you name it, totally contradictory to the president. What do you make of that . Im thankful that we have an Intelligent Community that is willing to speak truth to the power and the director of National Intelligence dan coats appointed by this president put out a document this morning in preparation for his testimony that laid it out straight for the american people. The threats that we face from north korea, from isis, from the Climate Change are real and what the president has said about them are just not factually accurate. Its very important to base our policies and our actions on the facts and so if we look at the facts as you just shared them with the american people, the clips from the statements that were made this morning, we know the North Koreans are not headed in the direction the president s have said they are heading. Climate change threatens us dramatically as american and as a planet and that isis has not been vanquished. We need to have policies in place that advance American National security interests and dont undermine us. These are officials who this president appointed and it seems that i dont know why the president isnt listening to, isnt trusting his own intelligence. Why . I think whats most meaningful for us is that we have people who have the integrity and the courage to speak publicly and state the facts. Were in such a noisy time of so much factfree debate that when we have people as credible as the director of National Intelligence, the head of the fbi, the head of the cia, who are willing to take the stand and say what is true, we all benefit from it. I want to ask also about a moment yesterday, the White House Briefing room where you have this yellow note pad held by john bolton and 5,000 troops to colombia, it got media talking, twitter talking, the acting defense secretary pat shanahan has told lawmakers he has not spoken to bolton. What do you think was going on with the notes . First of all, i cant divine what he was intending to do. One of the things you do when you are a senior american official is you dont have notes that are available to be seen on camera, but in this case i would guesstimate its possible that what is being considered is whether we have prepositioned forces in the region should we need to evacuate the americans who are in venezuela, whether they are diplomats, others working on behalf of the United States or just american citizens. One of the things we always did when we saw a country in crisis around the world, is we made sure if our citizens needed to be evacuated we would get to them in time if we needed to protect them especially those serving on behalf of the United States around the world where we have Public Servants doing the work of the nation. But no to any Administration Official i did want unless youre deliberately trying to tell send a message. Exactly. Exactly. There was an opinion piece. He writes this piece where hes making the point that the most successful administrations had three things in common, experience, effective policy and clear policies. The Trump Administration has not faced an actual National Security crisis that tests it and us in a profound way. There is no shortage of possible cyberattack. You mentioned venezuela a second ago. Afghanistan, syria, do you agree with tony . So tony is a close colleague of many years and we sat around that deputies table together in the situation room dealing with crisis almost on a daily bays because thats what the deputies process did. And what we have learned from those who are willing to share what is happening inside today is there is not a process populated by people with experience that is producing policies that are then implemented. Tonys piece i think is spot on, that is we really are at risk if we face the kind of crisis that puts all american in the cross hairs of someone whos trying to attack us. Ill give you an example when we worked to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States during the obama administration, the deliberate work that has to be done involving every Single Agency of the u. S. Government and our allies around the world to prevent terrorists from coming to our shores or sending things to our shores or through the skies that might harm americans, it requires an extraordinarily meticulous coordinated deliberate effort and what we dont see is that kind of process with the people producing the policies that are being implemented by this team. Yeah. Just look at the turnover rate in and of itself which is something tony pointed out in this piece. And many positions empty. Many positions that have never been filled. People leaving at an alarming rate. Embassies overseas without ambassadors. You name it. Yeah. Thank you, liz. Were following this breaking news out of chicago involving empire star jussie smollett. He confirmed to cnn that he was attacked while walking in downtown chicago. He said his attackers hurled racial and homophobic slurs at him and police say theyre investigating this as a possible hate crime. Lets go straight to chicago and our correspondent ryan young there and ryan, what happened . Reporter well, just look, a lot of strong reaction to this. What the actor is telling police so far. That hes walking in this general area and as he was walking back from the sandwich shop, he was attacked by two men that came upon them and he tried to fight back. From what were told, not only did they pour a substance over him but they had a rope that they tried to wrap around him. He did fight back. He talked to our don lemon, he was trying to fight back and was saddened by this, but since the last time weve talked, we got a statement from 20th century fox, they say we are deeply satddene and outraged to know that a member of our family was attacked last night viciously. We will bring with Law Enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. We stand united in the face of any act of violence and hate especially against one of our own and you can imagine this is also sending shockwaves through social media, people have been sort of out there responding greatly to this and sending out their condolences to the actor. One of the things theyve also been talking about is corey booker just sent out a tweet as well and the senator said, the vicious attack was an attempted modern day lynching. Im glad hes safe. To those in congress who dont feel the urgency to pass our antilynching bill i urge you to pay attention. I talked to you about this before in our last segment. This is an area were very familiar with. A lot of times when youre around here, you see people walking their dogs and this is a very safe area and there are several cameras in this area. It would be interesting to see what Additional Information detectives can get in this. So far weve talked to police to see if theres a News Conference about this. So far theres not one planned. It would be also interesting to see if they can pull some sort of evidence or if anybody in the area heard this attack while it was going on, but this is all fresh reaction thats been going on after the word of the crime is spread out there. And this is america in 2019. Ryan young, thank you. Well stay on top of this with you. Elections is speaking exclusively to cnn even though she says russian agent have warned her to keep quiet. She was arrested nearly a year ago in thailand for violating the terms of her visa. Just before her arrest, she posted photos on instagram from 2016 that showed her relaxing on a boat with a Russian Oligarch and a Russian Deputy prime minister. The oligarch was once a Business Partner of Paul Manafort and on the way to this thai prison she released this video. Translator im ready to give you all the missing pieces of the puzzle, support them with videos and audio regarding the connections of our respective lawmakers with trump, manafort and the rest. After being released from prison this month, the 28yearold was deported to moscow and cameras caught her being manhandled by securities in the moscow airport. She has since apologized for the images and was just released from custody. Now she is sharing her story with cnns Senior International correspondent matt chance and matthew, i mean, have we got any closer to find out if there were any truth in her claims . Reporter well, she didnt deny the claims that shed made but she gave a couple of reasons why she couldnt elaborate on them any further in our interview. First of all, she said that the evidence she once had, the videos, the audio recordings that shed claimed she had talking about u. S. russian relations had been confiscated or deleted and that she no longer had them. She said shed gone public with those claims in the first place in order to provide a sense of publicity and a sense of security that that publicity would bring, but i think most alarming in this interview is she said she couldnt speak to us about the specifics of her allegations any more because shed been given a very stark warning when she was behind russian bars. Take a listen. You said im ready to give you all the missing puzzle pieces video and audio regarding the connections of our respective lawmakers with trump, manafort and the rest. Why did you say that . After that i was almost one year in prison. I understand your question is about connection of american and Something Like that but i cannot answer. You should understand something, because i really was in very bad condition over that year. I dont want more. I dont want to compare whats better thai prison or russian prison. Have you been told that if you keep quiet, if you dont say anything else about those meetings, that youll be free. I have some talk when i was in jail in russian jail and they explain me very clear what should i do, what should i say and what should i shouldnt i say. Who explain that had to you . Russian russian agents. What did they say to you . They said to me, dont touch him any more or face swapping your thai prison for a lengthy period, brooke, in a russian one. Is she still facing legal trouble, matthew . Reporter she is. Shes been released from custody here in russia but shes still a suspect were told by the authorities in a prostitution case. I think the way its going to work is that if she doesnt put a foot wrong or say the wrong things, shes probably going to maintain her freedom. But at any point the authorities here could yank her back into the prison and silence her that way. Wow. Matthew, thank you. With the democratic field for president expanding quickly, the current frontrunner according to the polls appears to be in no hurry formally announce. Im talking about joe biden here. Today cnn caught up with biden at the airport and he says, he is in no rush to make a decision on 2020. I dont think theres any hurry to have that announced. I dont have any particular timetable. I dont think theres any hurry but theres a big hurry to decide just personally. The former Vice President was asked about the possibility that former starbucks ceo Howard Schultz could run for president as an independent, he downplayed that any schultz would hurt democrats chances of beating trump. I think hes smart as hell and i think its his decision. Do you think itll hurt democratic chances of beating trump . I think its premature and so far out. One of the things that i think were doing is and its us, not the president were starting awful early. We should be trying to figure out with how to zeal with the damage hes doing right now. Five democrats have announced they are running for president in 2020. Also just in, senator Chuck Schumer says Stacey Abrams will deliver the democratic response to President Trumps state of the Union Address next tuesday. Have you asked Stacey Abrams to deliver the democratic response and has she accepted the state of the union . Speaker pelosi and i are going to issue a official statement but a few weeks ago i called her to deliver the response to the state of the union. I was very delighted when she agreed and she is just a great spokesperson. Shes an incredible leader. She has led the charge of voting right which is at the root of Everything Else and she really has if you look at her background, she knows what working people, middle class people go through. Im very excite that had shes agreed to be the respondient to the president and the state of the union. Stacey abrams gained National Attention during her bid for governor of georgia. Had she won, she would have been the first africanamerican woman governor in the nation. Phil, what statement, what message are democrats hoping to achieve or to send by choosing Stacey Abrams . Reporter at least at first its further confirmation the state of the union will actually occur so at least were temporarily in a better place. What this underscores is something thats not a secret. Within the party, abrams is considered a rising star. She lost her race for governor in georgia. She was the first female black major Party Candidate in history in georgia and shes somebody that National Democrats are very interested in in terms of what her future may be. Theres a lot there is a seat up for georgia. Key in on what senator schumer said. That is a major piece in the house right now. It is a major thing they are talking about, pushing back against republican efforts. Abrams has been on the forefront of that. A very high profile race. She won more votes total than any democratic candidate state wide in the history of georgia. That has tongues wagging as they look at new battleground states going forward. Abrams tweeted out at a moment when our nation needs to hear from leaders who can unite for a common purposes im honored to be delivering the state of the union response. When it ko she will be the first unelected official to give a response to the state of the union. Former kentucky but before i get attacked on twitter it was not a state of the Union Address. Democrats have very high opinions of Stacey Abrams and i think everybody will be interested in what she has to say. Thank you very much. Also we are learning the head of the Congressional Budget Office is standing on behind how much the shut down actually costs.
