Because they havent been fair to us. We want to have a great relationship with pakistan, but they house the enemy, they take care of the enemy. We just cant do that. So i look forward to meeting with the folks from and the new leadership in pakistan, well be doing that in the nottoodistant future. I ended the 1. 3 billion we paid, its like water, we just do it. And i ended the money to countries that dont even vote for us in the united nations. We give them billions and they dont even vote for us in the united nations. Its not all about the rich countries because the rich countries really do take advantage of us because they pay a very small percentage of their military and they cheat on trade. They take advantage of us on trade. Other than that theyre wonderful, okay. But there are countries that are poor that we will we dont want anything from them. We want to help them. There are some horrible things going on in the world. We want to help those people. We dont want money from them. Were not looking for that. But when you have massively wealthy countries that could easily pay us the full amount and they also take advantage of us on trade so when i speak up, i mean, thats why i got elected. Issues like that. Issues like the border. And it would be so easy not to do anything. When they say im not popular in europe, i shouldnt be popular in europe. If i was popular in europe, i wouldnt be doing my job because i want europe to pay. Germany pays 1 . They should be paying 4 . Theyre paying 1 . They should be paying even more than that. Other countries pay a small percentage of what they should be paying. So when i say im sorry, folks, you have to pay up, i shouldnt be popular in europe. They do a poll. I was at 88 and now im at a very low number in europe. I dont care about europe. Im not elected by europeans, im elected by americans. And by american taxpayers frankly. So, you know, i think my relationship, i will tell you with the leaders of europe is very good. A lot of them dont even understand how they got away with it for so many years. Ill say to angela and many of the other leaders, im friends with all of them. Ill say how did this ever happen . And they sort of go like i cant believe it either. They cant believe it. You know why . Because they have president s and other people within the administration in the past to allow them to get away. Some of them will say no one ever asked us to pay. We have negotiations going on with a lot of countries to pay a lot of money to the United States. I wouldnt say theyre thrilled. If that makes me unpopular in those countries, thats okay, but were doing Tremendous Service to those countries and they should at least respect us. They didnt respect us. Go ahead. You treat me so nicely. Reporter i appreciate it, mr. President. Maybe the military has an angle here or a possible they have no angle. I know every angle. No, they have no angle. The military under past leadership, including for many years was taken advantage of by other countries. Allies and not allies, they were taken advantage of. Our country has to be respected. Were not respected when we do that. When horrible things are happening on trade where we have barriers put up, where we have tariffs put on and we open our country up, we just open it up, where cars are sent into our country with virtually no tax, no nothing and yet they wont accept our cars, when cars are sent in and they pay no tax but were expected to pay 25, 40, 50 and we pay nothing, ill be honest with you, its just not in my dna. I dont know how people allowed that in my position, allowed these things to happen. And were not allowing it to happen anymore. I could be the most popular person in europe. I could run for any office if i wanted to but i dont want to. I want people to treat us fairly and theyre not. And its not theres no angles. Theres no angles. Theres nothing you know, when a country sends us 200 soldiers to iraq or sends us a hundred soldiers from a big country to syria or to afghanistan and then they tell me a hundred times, oh, we sent you soldiers, we sent you soldiers. And thats 1 100th of the money they take advantage of, theyre just doing it to make me happy. Ive heard past president s say theyve involved in the Afghanistan War because they sent us a hundred soldiers. Yet its costing us billions of billions of dollars. I get along with india and the Prime Minister and hes constantly telling me he built a library in afghanistan. You know what that is . Thats like five hours of what we spend. And he tell it is and hes very smart and were supposed to say oh, thank you for the library. I dont know whos using it in afghanistan but one of those things. Well, i dont like to show up, to negotiate w h with all right, we were just listening to President Trump speaking to members of his cabinet here at the white house in this new year. A lot to dissect. Of course there is more. Lets take a listen. It ts the end of the world d were subsidizing their military by billions and billions and billions of dollars many, many, many times what those soldiers cost their country. Did you hear about the mitt romney oped . I wish mitt could be more of a team player. Im surprised he did it this quickly. I was expecting something but im surprised he did it this weekly. Look, i endorsed him, he thanked me profusely. He said it. I read his oped. He agrees and i dont think he would be i dont think anybody would have been able to do the tax cuts like i did. Weep g we got the greatest tax cut ever. We got rid of the individual mandate, which is repeal and replace of obama. It only was kept, obamacare, it was only kept because of the individual mandate. Now that thats gone, i dont know how you can possibly keep it. So thats repeal and replace. John mccain voted against it, after campaigning for many years, john mccain voted against it. He went thumbs down and that was the end of that. For many years it was repeal and replace and then at 2 00 in the morning he went thumbs down. So im a very plflexible guy. We were part of that lawsuit as you know. A great judge, highly respected from texas said the individual mandates out. That means we should win at the Supreme Court where this case will go. Now, when we do, we will sit down with the democrats and we will come up with great health care, far better, far better. Well have everything included. Well have everything included. Far better because obamacare is too expensive. The premiums are way too high and the deductibles, you cant even use it. The deductible is so high, unless up get hit by a prakttra you cant even use it. Nobodys ever seen anything like it. Obamacare is a tremendous failure. But now that we won the individual mandate, which was by far the most unpopular thing in blake. So with mitt romney, id love him to be a team player. Possibly he wont be. Im surprised he acted so quickly. I gave him an endorsement, i was happy that he won in utah. I have great popularity in utah. I love the people of utah. I did something for them that nobody else would have done, that had to do with their parks opinion woo we did that for a very special person who is now going to be retiring after 42 years, a great friend, a great senator, who is really a spectacular plan and also for mike lee, who really pressed it very hard. So orrin hatch and mike lee. And the people of utah really appreciate what i did for him. Hundreds and hundreds of miles of park that theyll be able to now use as opposed to not. And so i was surprised at mitt romney. But i just hope hes going to be a team player. If hes a team player, that will be great. I will say this, if he fought really hard against president obama like he does against me, he would have won the election. Does that make sense to you . If he fought the way he fights me, im telling you, he would have won the election. But i think hes going to end up being a team player. I think he agrees with many of the things that weve done and many of the things that we have in mind and well see what happens. Reporter mr. President go ahead, afghanistan. Reporter in afghanistan, you have one isis and the taliban is gaining ground. And india i think india should be involved in afghanistan. I gave our generals all the money they wanted. They didnt do such a great job in afghanistan. Theyve been fighting in afghanistan for 19 years. General mattis thanked me profusely for getting him several hundred billion and thanked me more the following year when i got him 716 billion. He couldnt believe it because our military was depleted. Now were rebuilding our military. Pat was very responsible for a lot of the orders for the new f35 fighter jets and f18s including ships and missiles and everything. But general mattis was so thrilled. But whats he done for me . How has he done in afghanistan . Not too good. Not too good. Im not happy with what hes done in afghanistan and i shouldnt be happy. But he was very thankful when i got him 700 billion and the following year 716 billion. So i wish him well. I hope he does well. But as you know, president obama fired him and essentially so did i. I want results. Reporter [ inaudible ]. Were going to do something thats right. We are talking to the tall ban, were talking to a lot of different people but heres the thing because you mentioned india. Andria as there. Russia is there. Russia used to be the soviet union. Afghanistan made it russia because they went bankrupt fighting in afghanistan. Russia. So you take a look at other countries. Pakistan is there. They should be fighting. But russia should be fighting. The reason russia was in afghanistan was because terrorists were going into russia. They were right to be there. The problem is it was a tough fight. And literally they went bankrupt. They went into being called russia again as opposed to the soviet union union. A lot of these places youre reading about now are no longer a part of russia because of afghanistan. But why isnt russia there . Why isnt india there in nia ar we there and were 6,000 miles away . But i dont mind. We want to help our people, help other nations. You do have terrorists, mostly taliban but isis. Ill give you an example. So tall isis is an enemy. We have an area where taliban is here, isis is here and theyre fighting each other. I said why dont you let them fight . Why are we getting in the middle of it . I said let them fight. Theyre both our enemies, let them fight. Sir, we want to do it. They go in and end up fighting both of them. It the craziest thing ive ever seen. I think i would have been a good general but who knows. These are two enemies fighting again but what are we doing . But i said this intergentleman. Hes done a fantastic job. Hes brought the country together. India, russia, you look at some of the satellite countries that are extremely wealthy with oil, surrounding. I spoke to some of them. They i said to a certain country, very rich country, what would you do if the United States pulled out . Oh, wed be taken over by the taliban and terrorists. I said, ah. They then why are you charging us when we have to use your country to send product through . Why are you charging us when we send airplanes over your country . Were doing the job for you, why are you charging us . He said to me, very great gentleman, smart. He said to me, well, nobody ever asked me not to. I said im asking you not to. He said we will not charge you. And im talking about millions and millions of dollars. Flights over his country. But i say to him, what would happen if we werent here . And he looks at me and he goes we would be overrun. We could not defend ourselves. And yet he charges us. But he doesnt charge us anymore, okay. Jeff. Reporter you use the word slowly when youre describing the withdrawal i didnt say what is your timetable . Somebody said four months. Obama gave up syria when he didnt violate the red line. I did when i shot 59 missiles in but that was a long time later. And when president obama decided not to violate his statement that never cross the red line and then they did and he didnt do anything about it, you know, make ak threat is okay but you always have to follow through with the threat. You cant make a threat and then do nothing. So syria was lost long ago. It was lost long ago. And beside that, i dont want were talking about sand and death. Thats what were talking about. Were not talking about vast wealth. Were talking about sand and debt. Now, the kurds, its very interesting, turk ear doesnt like them, other people do. I didnt look the fact that there selling the small ol they have to iran. But kurds are selling oil to iran. Im not happy about it at all. At the same time, they fight better when we fight with them. When we send 30 f18s in front of them, they fight much better than they do when we dont. And youve we want to protect the kurds. But i dont want to be in serious forever. It sad and the death. If we fight sizis you know where else theyre going . To iran, who hates isis more than we do. Theyre going to russia, who hates isis more than we do. Then i read when we pull out, russia is thrilled. You know why theyre not happy . Because this be and were killing isis also for iran. And just while were on iran because people dont like to write the facts. Iran is a much different country than it was when i became president. Iran when i became president , i had a meeting at the pentagon with lots of generals, they was like for a pry, better looking than tom cruz and stronger. Ive had more i said this is the greatest room ive ever seen. I saw more computer boards than i think that they make today. And every part of the middle east and other places that was under attack was under attack because of iran. And i said to myself, wow, i mean, you look at yemen, you look at syria, you look at every place, saudi arabia was under siege, they were all i mean, they wanted yemen because of a long border with saudi arabia. Thats why theyre there, frankly. But every place was under siege. I actually asked a question. They had plenty of money. President obama had just given them 150 billion. He gave them 1. 8 billion in cash. Im still trying to figure that one out, mick opinion plane loads of cash, i cash from my different countries. You know why from five different countries, jeff . Because we didnt have enough cash in they had to use the current at this with all of that being said, i did something called terminate the horrible iran nuclear deal, which by the way, in eight years gives iran the legal right to have nuclear weapons. I did it. Iran is no longer the same country. Iran is pulling people out of syria. They can do what they want there, frankly, but theyre pulling people out, theyre pulling people out of yemen. Iran wants to survive now. Iran was they were going to take over everything and destroy israel while theyre at it. Iran is a much different country right now. Theyre having riots every week in every country, bigger than theyve when we do all of the things that we gone pan iran is in trouble. Id love to negotiate with iran. There but iran is a much different country right now, jeff, than it was when i took eefr. What i took over two years ago, iran was going to tack over the most and they were going to have all the weapons they wanted in a short period of time because of that stupid deal. When i terminated that deal and then did what i had to do, iran is a much different country today than it was 19 months ago, that i can tell you. Reporter on the timetable for withdrawing troops it just over a period of time. Oh, were withdrawing. Were hitting nem very hard. When i met with the generals in iraq, i said to a couple of the generals, why didnt you do this before . He said, sir, our commanders were telling us what to do. I said dont you tell them . No, sir, we take orders. And theyre great soldiers. They listen. I do it differently. I sat around and after a few minutes they listened up and said this is what were should do. But we were supposed to to be out and that was five years ago and we never left. I see soldiers that are so badly injured and hurt, i dont want that. Why want it. And i want to repd without can pleat and our military is getting really strong. I can tell you story when i dpirs got here about our military that i dont even want to talk about. I dont even want to talk about. One of the ngs, we do these reports on our military. Some i. G. Goes over there, mostly point pd by plm and he goes over there and they do a report on every single thing were fighting wars and theyre doing report and releasing it to the public. The public means the enemy. Those reports should be private reports. Let them do a report but they should be private reports and be locked up and but for these reports, criticizing referring for these reports essentially given out to the enemy is insane. And i dont want it to happen anymore, mr. Secretary. You understand that. Look at the reports. Nobody more critical of, hey, its not my fault, were getting out smart. And were. Said but were getting out very carefully. Yes, maam. Reporter could you accept anything less than 2. 5 billion . No, were asking for 5. 6. Somebody said 2. 5. No, look, this is National Security were talking about. Just like we talk about the military, just like were talking about syria or afghanistan or all these different places. I mean, we spend in afghanistan more in one month than what were talking about for the wall. Think of that, okay. Thats another way. We spend in afghanistan more money than most countries spend, except a few. It itses 6 approved. They stepped up. Im not holding nancy to this but she said youll never get the republicans to vote for it. I never saw anything so beautiful in my life. That spired this many we dont need another democrat. And i want the democrats to join in, too. The 5. 6 billion is such a small number. Literally its one month in afghanistan were talking about National Security. This isnt just a border. This is National Security. This is health and wellness. This is everything. Reporter does that mean were going to see. Let see. Maybe they have an idea. I talk also dhaka been if the property rules by the way, if i was right, i would have tremendous power. Wouldnt that be scary, right . If president obama is allowed to did on things that probably a president , as he said, probably doesnt have a right to do. How long do you think the government is going to stay partially shut down sp. Could be a long time and it could be quickly. It too i was here christmas evening, i was alls about except for all the guys out on the lawn with machine guns. I never saw so many guys with machine guns in my life, secret service and military. These are great peoplebut i was are all alone with the machine gunners and i felt very safe theyre great people and there but they didnt do that and thats okay. Look, look, this is really something that should be bipartisan. And well see if it is. I hope it is. I hope it is, okay . Reporter mr. President , are you willing to keep the government shut down until the Supreme Court rules on daca . No, i think this should be settled. By the way, if the Supreme Court would do a great favor to this country and say the president should not have done that, we will settle this whole thing, including really a big immigration policy, not just border security, which is very important. Because we would do something with daca. A lot of the republicans, most republicans are fine with some deal on daca. Dacas okay. These are people that have been in the country a long time. In many cases they dont even speak the language of the country from which their parents came. Reporter how are you viewing this meeting later this afternoon . Is this an Education Campaign . Are you issuing demands all this is to tell chuck and nancy and some others from i. C. E. And Border Patrol and also from local Law Enforcement how bad it is, how dangerous it is and why we need a wall but they know that. Look, when they say the walls immoral, then you got to do something about the vatican because the vatican has the biggest wall of them all. The wall is immoral. Look at all of the countries that have walls. And they work 100 . Its never going to change. A wall is a wall. The others just i mean, we can have all the drones flying over the people last night as they tried to rush the border. The only thing that stopped them was the wall. If we have drones up there, its wonderful, well get nice pictures. 5. 6 is a small amount compared to a problem. It was never 25. A lot of people thought it was 25 billion. That was for overall Homeland Security. That was for much more than the wall. The wall was a piece of that. So a lot of people said he should have taken the 25 billion. Well, that covered a lot more territory than the wall. How long are you willing to keep the government shut down . As long as it takes . Look, im prepared i think the people of the country think im writright. Again, i could have done nothing. Could i have a lot easier presidency by doing nothing. But im here, i want to do it right. And im not only talking here, im talking about middle east problems and other problems and north korea problems. Why do you think mr. Romney will eventually become a team player . I dont know if he does. I hope he does. I think i have the highest rating i dont know why but they like me. They say im the most popular president in the history of the republican party. You see the same news i do. How do i get these numbers when people see gasoline is why down. I called up some of the opec people. When you look back a few month, gasoline was at 83 a barrel. That was going to be bad. It was going to some people were saying 125, rick. I made calls and i said you better let that gasoline flow. And they did. Now its down to 44. And i put out a social Media Statement yesterday. I said do you think its luck that that happened . Its not luck. Its not luck. I called up certain people and i said let the damn oil and gasoline, you let it flow, the oil. It was going up to 125. If that would have happened, then you would have had a recession, depression like weve had in the past when that happened. Reporter [ inaudible ]. I dont know if hes going to become a team player. I hope he does. If he does, i think its going to be better for him. I think people are very upset with what he did. He hasnt even got into office yet. He hasnt even got into office. And he was very happy when i endorsed him. So i dont know what changed, other than weve succeeded in many of the things i said we were going to do. Let me tell you, were succeeding in things that people thought were impossible to do. So i think that mitt romney hopefully will be a team player. And if hes not, thats okay, too. Look, i handle it. I just got rid of they say theyre retired. They say that bob corker retired. They say that jeff flake, wonderful guy, i never even met him and hes hitting me. He was going to tell people how to win in 2020 because 2016 cant he wrote a book about it. Didnt work out too well that book because we won in 2016 because we didnt want to wait till 2020. So jeff flake is now selling real estate or whatever hes doing. Hell probably go to work for cnn. Thats my prediction. Bob corker, unfortunately him and i had a Good Relationship and then he thought he was going to get some publicity for himself and his ratings tubed where he couldnt have come in fourth in the primary. Bob corker was going to be a senator for another 20 years and then for some reason he hit me because he thought it was going to be good publicity. It didnt work out too well. So with mitt, i hope hes a team player. If hes not, thats okay, too. We have some great republicans. If you look at the way theyre standing up for border security, youd be very proud of them, if youre a rab or a person that loves our president. Thank you very much. All right. A lot to unpack there. The president speaking during this Cabinet Meeting at the white house in this new year. It was a wide ranging discussion. Take a look here as we see a bigger screen shot with this poster, i believe saying sanctions are coming in front of the president there at the table. Really remarkable this wide ranging at timesint interaction with reporters in front of his entire cabinet. Clearly the president had a lot on his mind, he talked about being alone over christmas in the white house. And he seemed to be stewing over a lot of issues. Hes standing by his demand for a 5 billion border wall and he fired back at mitt romneys criticism, wishing he was a team player. And he also says he essentially fired defense secretary james mattis as he defended his decision to exit syria. As we know, james mattis resigned in protest. Lets talk about all of this with our panel. I want to bring in cnn White House Correspondent cate lynn collins and joshua green and the president said he was virtually alone over christmas and thats why you saw that meeting drag ought over an hour and a half. We are essentially at a stalemate with this Government Shutdown and were nowhere closer to getting any kind of solution in sight. Thats what the president made clear at the end when you saw him say he would not accept 2. 5 billion for security. He seemed kind of surprised by that number, pamela, even though that is the exact number that Vice President mike pence and several other white house officials actually offered to Chuck Schumer when they met with him on capitol hill, something that democrats turned down. But now democrats is saying, no, 2. 5 would not be acceptable. Thats going to put the white house in a tougher position as they move forward because essentially neither side is going to get their way here. Someone is going to have to compromise but the president saying he would not accept less than 2. 5 billion when democrats were not on board with 2. 5 billion to begin with is going to set us up for a pretty interesting meeting with the congressional leaders at the white house this morning. The white house predicting they were not going to make a whole lot of progress. I want to bring in our cnn political analyst. Just following up on what kaitlan said, josh, basically the president undercut his own Vice President. You think about mike pence. He was the one that told congress that, look, the president will sign a c. R. The Senate Passes it and then the president said he wont. And mike pence tried to negotiate a deal with a proposal for 2. 5 billion for the wall that was rebuffed by Chuck Schumer the president seemed surprised and said i dont want to accept anything less than 5 billion is what he was say ing. What do you think of all that . I think you get a good illustration of why it so difficult to bring a shutdown to the end. Democrats realize when theyre negotiating with pence or mcconnell, theyre not make anything head way because the only person who matters is donald trump. He seemed surprised to hear the number 2. 5 billion, how small it was. This is why when you talk to democrats they say were not going to have a deal until trump tweets to it on twitter, agrees to it and then agrees to it publicly. Every indication we got is we are nowhere close to trump agreeing to anything publicly or privately and the shutdown is probably going to continue for quite a while. It just seems like there is nond in sight, and of course there is a but after seeing that, does it seem as though any compromise will be reached . No. It doesnt seem that the president in a bargaining mood. If hes not going to stick with them on the number, why should he stick with them on the terminology on the wall or anything else . Democrats are buying to buy some time and get most of the unfunded part of the federal budget up and running, sending most of the furloughed workers back to work and leave the Homeland Security Department Funded for the month they think they can take to negotiate. Otherwise this is going to be going on for several weeks. It was the holidays, people were home. Its very difficult to have the shut down during a holiday because of financial implications to individuals. In a way people arent watching dfrmgts c. Close live but its a time when people are not planned to be atwork because the particulars of the shut down, the we didnt see it being quite as powerful as it was when we had a full Government Shutdown a few years ago. I would have said before this press conference its anybodys guess as far as who is going to take the blame for that but if the president decides to keep going out and saying, no, im not going to take that deal that my people negotiated, the blame is probably going to come back on him in greater measure if this continues. All right. I want to talk also about the president s response to incumbent senator mitt romney and the scathing oped he wrote for the washington post. The president seemed pretty restrained compared to what weve seen in the past. Is this because he needs mitt romneys vote . I think it because the president doesnt see mitt romney as threat. That is why you saw such a muted response to the president , when you can really tell how the president typically feels about something. Look at the way he talked about former defense secretary james mattis compared to the way he spoke about mitt romney there. He talked about the fact that mitt romney accepted and touted the president s endorsement when he was running for senate. Youve got to look at what mitt romney actually wrote in that oped. He said it was a december when everything changed for him when he argued that the president did not take the mantle of the presidency. Thats something that white house aides have kind of scoffed at in recent days or recent hours since that oped came out last night saying not much changed for President Trump, he did not change who he is from november to december so its change now that the he is writing as you saw today with mitt romneys niece, the rnc chair, clearly siding with the president over her own uncle in that tweet saying that an income being freshman senator should not be siding with the democrats and the media, in her opinion, with his criticism of the president. President trump was relatively restrained there when he talked about it saying he hopes he comes on to a team player but also playing out the fact that mitt romney did accept his endorsement. All right. Kaitlan, thank you. Josh, what is your reaction to the president s response . I was surprised it was muted. But when you stop and think republicans still have a fairly small majority in the senate, a little bit bigger than it was. But when you have voices like mitt romney, who might be willing to break off and vote against the president , its important to keep them in the fold. You hear trump talk about i need a team player, maybe thats something lurking in the back of his mind. And who knows if we ever wind up in a situation where the house impeaches donald trump, maybe after muellers report comes out and goes to the senate, trump is going to need every republican senator to stick with him and protect his presidency. Maybe thats lurking in the back of his mind. And the reaction beyond just the president s reaction has been really interesting. You saw the rnc chair whose uncle is mitt romney come out and criticize it. Rand paul actually has come out and criticized romney for this. But what do you think . Do you think mitt romney will be sort of the enough face of the republican resistance, similar to what we saw from jeff flake . The comparison i would make is a little different than jeff flake. I would say romney is trying to be the next john mccain. If youre mitt romney, it makes sense that the rnc would fall in line with the president. Theyre worried about there being a rupture in the middle of the party. There is real frustration with trump and they dont agree with his trade policies and i think romney has shown he is what really the heart and the gut of the gop would be on those kind of issues absent President Trump. Hes potentially threaten, though he is a very back bencher in terms of his rank in the senate. He was the partys political nominee. Hes known as a face, even if he is a freshman senator from a state that is not, you know, that is excuse me, a freshman senator who is kind of at the back of the line for the rest of the senate. But why do you play nice if youre a senator who a freshman . Because you want to rise through the ranks to become a Committee Chairman and mitt romney doesnt need any of that. But he can be a foil to that. And romney could just be something bigger than his position. And i think that if trump and his advisers look at that, the small thing to do is say dont pro vek it. And hes saying inning me up to the the foil. Thankly, there is a vacuum for that. Mccain was the critic and hes gone now. So there is that opening for somebody to take that on. Its just interesting to look back at their tumultuous relationship. Mitt romney went after trump during the campaign, then he sort of pulled that back in when he was in the running for secretary of state and he accepted trumps endorsement to become senator but now clearly he is going after him once again. So much to discuss. Stand by, everyone. More on the president s remarks, saying he essentially fired defense secretary james mattis, even though mattis resigned in protest. The president s first Cabinet Meeting of 2019 showcased just how much turnover this white house has seen just in the past year. At least seven people are serving as acting secretaries or Department Chiefs until permanent replacements are named. Two of them with front row seats replacing jim mattis for now exacting secretary of defense pat shanahan to the president s right and filling ryan zinkes po post, to his left. Theyre general who is the president often called his most treasured advisers. But after two years in office, the president seems eager to minimize those military minds, ignoring kellyies advice and listen to what he said about mattis moments ago. I gave our generals all the money they wanted. They didnt do such a great job in afghanistan. General mattis was so thrilled. But whats he done for me . How has he done in afghanistan . Not too good. As you know, president obama fired him and essentially so did i. To be clear, james mattis resigned in protest. With me is peter bergen, who has an oped on cnn. Com about the president s war with his generals. Clearly the president is peeved over mattis departure and how it all went down with that resignation letter. They were not able to see eye to eye on syria or afghanistan for that matter. But what do you make of the president s criticism . Its startling because go back two years, jim mattis, a retired four star, secretary of defense, john kelly was four star, secretary of Homeland Security and chief of staff, mike flynn, retired Lieutenant General was National Security security adviser when he left, mcmaster also a threestar general, hired as National Security adviser. The place was rife with the kind of leading military figures of the generation. Now President Trump has really attacked mattis personal lly in his press conference, saying he fired him, which sun true. He essentially got rid of john kelly, and getting rid of james matt mattis. Hes had a spat with admiral mccraven and it hard to think of a leading military leader that he hasnt been in a war of words with in the last several months, which is so strange because even in this press conference, he was saying that he thought of himself as potentially a great general. This is a guy who went to a military boarding school, avoided service in vietnam, taking five deferments but he does seem to have a Great Respect at least in theory for the u. S. Military but that respect when it comes to particular personalities seems to have evaporated. Lets listen to more of his remarks. We have an area that i brought up with our generals four, five weeks ago where taliban is here, isis is here and theyre fighting each other. I said why dont you let them fight . Why are we getting in the middle of it . Let them fight. Theyre both our enemies. Let them fight. Sir, we want to do it. They go in and end up fighting both of them. Its the craziest thing ive ever seen. I think i would have been a good general but who knows. All right. So you go from a president who wants love surrounding himself with generals and then mocking the generals seemingly. What to you make of the shift . Im not a psychologist so i dont know. President trump has said many times various versions of i know better than anybody else. During the campaign, he said he knew how to fight isis better than anybody else fights isis. He denigrates people. Theres sort of a bromance, these are bromances, not romances with so many members of his cabinet who are men and then the bromance fades and theyre gone. Thats a pattern weve seen repeatedly, which is why youve pointed out there are so many acting people at this meeting today. It is interesting talking to white house officials, they do say that theyve noticed the president relying more on his own instinct, his own gut rather than listening to advisers like his former chief of staff, outgoing today, john kelly. And that was really frustrating to i know kelly and bergen as well. Thank you for your analysis. The president says the Government Shutdown will last as long as it takes. Moments from now he and congressional leaders will hold a high stakes meeting as neither side appears ready to budge. Well take you there. If hes a team player, that will be great. I will say this, if he fought really hard against president obama, like he does against me, he would have won the election. Up heard theyou heard the pr firing back against mitt romney for questioning his character. Join being me to discuss, ryan williams, former spokesman for mitt romney and republican strategist. Ryan, your former boss and the president have had sort of an onandoff again relationship. There was this oped from romney criticizing the president , the president coming back at him saying he should be a team player. Why did romney do this now in your view . Why do you think . If you follow senator romneys campaign in utah, he has consistently been saying hes going to be with the president when he supports him butch but he wont hesitate to speak out when he doesnt agree with him. I think as he pointed out in the beginning of that piece, he thought december was a particularly rocky month and a time for him to speak out and reflect on someupheavals weve seen in the white house. What do you say to those who say what are you talking about, this has been the president since the campaign . The dismissal of general mattis and general kelly and the governor found that particularly troubling. Thats why he wrote the piece. But the governor is going to be with the president when he agrees with him. If they can find Common Ground on issues, the governor will support him. If he thinks things are going awry, he speak out. There are critics that say senator romney now is being an opportunist. He was positive about trump when he was in the running for secretary of state, when he accepted his endorsement during his senate race and that he just does this when its convenient for him or hes being an opportunist. What do you say to that . And the notion that he is trying to be the new face of the republican resistance . If you follow governor romneys for senate, would you see in june of 2018 he wrote a very similar opinion piece outlining the same thing. If you followed his tweets, the governor has consistently disagreed with the president on his attacks with the media but supported him on others. This is the way mitt romney has approached him for months and years. He is with the president on issues but when he disgreasagre hes not going to be afraid to speak out. Mitt romney is mitt romney. He wants to get things done in washington, want
