Of several jewish grandchildren. His daughter is a Jewish American and his soninlaw is a descendant of holocaust survivors. Tomorrow, the president and first lady will travel toll pennsylvania to express the support of the American People and grieve with the pittsburgh communit community. Well, just minutes later, sanders defended the president against accusations that hes enflaming anger and Division Within the nation as it faces the death of 11 members of the synagogue. Plus, a man accused of a racially charged double murder in kentucky and a suspect accused of sending more than a dozen mail bombs to critics of President Trump. Here was sanders, moments ago. And then this morning, suggesting that the news media is responsible for the anger in the country. How does he do that, when, in the case of the pipe bomber, this was somebody who went to trump rallies, this is somebody who had a van covered with attacks on the media and praise for the president. The shooter in pittsburgh is somebody who was provoked, it seems, by the caravan that the president has spent so much time talking about. Why is he out there, when youre saying hes trying to unite the country, why is he out there making attacks . The very first thick that the president did was condemn the attacks, both in pittsburgh and in the pipe bombs. The very first thing the media did was blame the president and make him responsible for these ridiculous acts. That is outrageous, that that would be the very first reaction of so many people across this country. Im not finished. The only person responsible for carrying out either of these heinous acts were the individuals who carried them out. Its not the president , no more than it was Bernie Sanders fault for the individual who shot up a baseball field of congressional republicans. You cant start putting the responsibility of individuals on anybody but the individual who carries out the crime. But why is the president suggesting its the news media . The president is the one placing blame here. No, the president is not placing blame. The president is not responsible for these akcts. Again, the very first action that the president did was condemn these heinous acts. S the very first thing that the media did was condemn the president and go after him and try to place blame, not just on the president , but everybody that works in this administration. The Major News Networks first Public Statement was to blame the president and myself included. I mean, that is outrageous that anybody other than the individual who carried out the crime would hold that responsibility. Well, were going to delve deeper into the politics and the hate crimes, as well, over the next hour. I want to begin with exactly what happened here in pittsburgh at the tree of life synagogue. Federal prosecutors are now seeking approval to pursue the Death Penalty for the suspect, who shot and killed 11 people in the synagogue saturday and wounded 6 others, including 4 police officers. I want to go to cnns jean casarez. She is outside the federal courthouse where the suspect had his first appearance this afternoon. He arrived in a wheelchair. Jean, explain what happened. Reporter well, i was in that courtroom and we already know the date of the next hearing. It will be on thursday, the preliminary hearing at 10 00. The defense actually waived any issue of bail today, so this defendant remains in federal custody at this hour. But he was wheeled in to this federal courtroom. He did not walk in. He had civilian clothes on. I saw his face very, very clear in this relatively small courtroom when he was wheeled in, he was appearing to be extremely aware, very calm, very collected. I didnt see outwardly any nerves at all or any anxiety. And then once he sat between his two assistant public defenders, they actually took the handcuffs off of him, so he could sign paperwork. He consulted with his attorney and then signed the paperwork. The handcuffs were put back on him and thats when the proceeding actually got started. The magistrate judge looked and spoke directly to him and asked him, first of all, if he was the defendant, saying his name. And he said, yes, i am. And it was a very loud, booming, confident voice. And then he was asked if he had received a copy of the complaint. He said, yes, sir, in answer to that. The judge actually listed the charges. He asked if there should be a full reading of the complaint. The defense said, no, your honor, we waive that, as well as we waive you saying in court the possible penalties in all of this. I noticed on his right side, right leg, right foot, white. And i think it was a bandage. He was obviously wheeled in, in the wheelchair. But the proceeding did not last very long at all. He announced that he financially the judge asked him if he signed financial forms saying he could not afford an attorney, he said, yes, i did. And the judge said, well, then one will be appointed for you. It will be from the public defenders office, not necessarily the attorneys in court today. But with that, it was over and on to the next preliminary hearing. And i should say, if the defense doesnt waive it, because this is a full evidentiary hearing, where you put evidence on to see if theres probable cause that this case proceeds to trial. That would be on thursday, anderson . So the next that would be the next time that he would be in court, thursday . Yes, that is correct. All right. Jean casarez, thanks very much. I want to go back to the white house, to the white house response, in particular, to this tragedy. Our chief white house correspondent, jim acosta, was in the briefing room. I wondered what you made of Sarah Sanders responses, jim . Reporter well, wianderson, you heard, the press secretary did say that the president and the first lady will be heading to pittsburgh tomorrow to remember the victims of the tree of life synagogue massacre. But then it got pretty contentious, as you saw, in that briefing. Members of the press, including myself, were trying to press sarah on some of the president s rhetoric, which the white house doesnt want to take any responsibility for. Theyre obviously pushing back on the notion that the president s rhetoric has anything to do with any of these violent acts weve seen over the last week. At one point, Sarah Sanders said that we and the press were blaming the president for these acts, which i dont think is the case. I suppose there might be some individuals out there who are blaming the president directly for these attacks. But i think what has been said, by cnn and other news outlets, is that the president s rhetoric has created this climate where these sorts of things can occur and that the president doesnt recognize the power of his own words on occasion. As we saw earlier this morning, anderson, the president was tweeting that the fake news is the enemy of the people, as he likes to put it. And soy asked sarah about that, noting that even former members of the administration, theres one particular former member of the administration, david lapin, who used to work under chief of staff john kelly, department of homeland security, said that the press is not enemy of the people, and heres how the exchange went. Youre not going to state for the record, then i mean, if the president is going to say the Fake News Media are the enemy of the people. And if youre going to stand there and continue to say that there are some journalists, some news outlets in this country that meet that characterization, shouldnt you have the guts, sarah, to state which outlets, which journalists are the enemy of the people . I think its irresponsible of a News Organization like yours to blame responsibility of a pipe bomb that was not sent by the president , not just blame the president , but blame members of his administration, for those heinous acts. I think that is outrageous and i think its irresponsible. Aeshnderson, we went back an forth there for a couple of more minutes and Sarah Sanders just did not want to name individual outlets. She went on she said that there were individual journalists, i suppose, that the president refers to as the enemy of the people, but we did not get a straight answer out of this white house as to which News Organizations they deem to be enemies of the American People. And i asked whether or not sarah and the president and others here in this administration should reserve that kind of language for true enemies of the American People. And she just offered no regrets, no apologies. And my guess, anderson, is that were going to continue to see this kind of rhetoric going forward. Anderson . Yeah. I should point out, a third pipe bomb mailed to cnn was intercepted. Just stunning. Jim acosta, appreciate your reporting. I want to go back to brooke. Brooke . Anderson, well take it. Thank you. Cup next, the man accused of sending those pipe bombs to 14 critics of President Trump goes to court, just after another of suspicious package was intercepted. This one addressed to the cnn center in atlanta. Find out what were learning about the suspects disturbing past on social media. Hi im joan lunden. We are back with special coverage here on this monday afternoon. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. In just the last hour, a serial bomb suspect has made his first court appearance. His Court Hearing happening as federal authorities investigate yet another suspicious package that he is believed to have sent. This latest package addressed to cnn World Headquarters in atlanta. It was intercepted as a post office near the cnn center today and it appears identical to other mailings. Law enforcement sources now telling cnn the suspect had a list of more than 100 people to whom he intended to send these packages. And some investigators are now reaching out to alert those people on his socalled hit list. Andrew kaczynski is with me now, as in cnns kfile. And hes been digging into this suspects troubling social media past. And what did you dig up . So it was interesting that you mentioned when we were coming to this, that they have 100 people whom he targeted. We were looking through all of his tweets and we found more 230 separate threats that he sent on his twitter account alone, at people. So, you know, looking through 4,000 of th 4,000 of this mans tweets, we were able to see how he was just taken in by so many of these farright conspiracy theories. Theres this sort of this usual stuff that we see on the right, believing obamas a muslim, theres the fake pizzagate conspiracy. But he also sort of bought into many of these antimedia conspiracy theories. He thought cnn had faked polls, faked live shots, was funded by obama. He really believed all sorts of very, very farright crazy things. This is the guy, when we were all covering this sitting here on friday that the news was breaking, that they found him in his van down there in florida, that he was standing there at a trump rally in 2017 with a sign that was critical of cnn, right . Thats absolutely right, he had that sign critical of cnn. And so when were looking through this, too, its very interesting, because you see sometimes his rhetoric sort of following the president s. We know that he was, you know, a trump superfan, went to rallies, went to the inauguration. But at times, when sending Death Threats at cnn, he actually used the same rhetoric as the president , calling cnn the enemy of america. Using the president s own words. Mmhmm. So frightening, all of which, at least investigators have this treasuretrove of evidence and ramblings online to use, to use against him, presumably. Andrew kaczynski, thank you so much for looking in all of that for us. We also of course, are following another attack, seemingly fueled by hate. In the state of kentucky, a white man is accused of killing two africanamericans last week at a grocery store. This is near louisville. Police say just moments before the shooting, the suspect was seen on Surveillance Video trying to open the door and get into this predominantly black church down the road. Thank goodness he couldnt. Moments after shooting in this grocery store, the 51yearold suspect exchanged gunfire with a, with someone in the parking lot, an Armed Civilian in the parking lot. No one was injured during that shootout and a the suspect was arrested a short time later. The Common Thread in the kentucky murders, the mail bombs, the pittsburgh synagogue shooting, is that in hindsight, the warning signs always seem to be there. The suspects have either a lengthy arrest record or a history of posting racist as we were just chatting, posting racist or extremist threats, sometimes both. So why are these attacks so hard to stop before they happen . Well discuss that, next. For your heart. Omethig or joints. But do you take something for your brain. With an ingredient originally discovered in jellyfish, prevagen has been shown in Clinical Trials to improve shortterm memory. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Captured lightning in a bottle. Over 260 years later as the nations leader in Energy Storage were ensuring americans have the energy they need, whenever they need it nextera energy. We will take you back to pittsburgh and our coverage of the tree of life synagogue with anderson here in just a second. And also, we should mention, the white house where President Trump and the first lady are planning to visit tomorrow. But people are questioning the nations Divisive Political discourse and if its directly fueling the violence and hate we are seeing across this country. Extreme rhetoric about immigrant caravans, contentious Midterm Election that is just eight days away. Lets delve into this whole conversation, too, about the role of social media. Oliver darcy is our cnn business reporter, and laurie segall, our cnn business Senior Technology correspondent. So laurie, just starting with you, really simply, you know, to my understanding, part of the reason why this is happening, we were just talking to Andrew Kaczynski about the ramblings online is social media. Tell me more about that. Sure. I think theyve struggled on getting on top of content. Ive just spent the last month out in the barrier in San Francisco having these hard conversations with these leaders. And they cant seem to find this fine line. Theres a lot of nuance here. And you know, i think regulation is coming down the pipeline, but a lot of these social Media Companies have forever been uncomfortable with being, you know, the role taking the role of editor. And i think youre seeing this play out. They havent moved quickly enough. And then theres the problem that as they move, a lot of the evil, a lot of this stuff is going to other platforms, where theres less moderation, like gab. And youre seeing a lot of the issues. One thing ill say thats really stuck with me, about a year ago, i interviewed someone who studies the internet and the state of social media. And he said, im worried that our world is beginning to resemble a chat room. That hate is moving offline. And look north than last week with the Police Sirens and people screaming, move back. And you hear that hate moving offline. We heard it here personally. In my time covering tech, i dont think its ever been so bad. I think this is a very challenging time for Tech Companies if their role and a lot of this hateful rhetoric and a lot of misinformation thats feeding it and going viral, making our world begin to resemble a chat room at its worst. Sam, what do you think . I worked in tech and i know how important it is for these platforms to be neutral platforms and not to become the arbitrators of whats good and bad. In a digital age, when theres instantaneous content amplification, i think many Tech Companies are thinking about what inciting violence, which is a crime, means in the digital age, but hateful propaganda existed well before social media. In the holocaust, 600 million jews were killed without a single tweet. Which your father survived. He did. And we often talk about the characteristics of hateful propaganda during that time. So to counter hateful extremism of any kind, you have to go to the source. Social media is a vehicle just like Media Outlets of any kind are. And to really fundamentally address it, we have to go into the communities and the schools and start spreading real information. So part of the conversation is, of course, whats happening online. The other part is whats happening on tv. Like a segment earlier today on fox. Im getting to you on this, because matt drudge, in a rare rebuke of fox news, was all over this segment. Heres a clip. People came together after 9 11 and, you know, watching vigils and other parts of the world as they prayed for us and prayed for our country to heal. And it feels like weve really lost part of that. What i will say is, try becoming a member of a third party for a little while. And then youll see what it feels like to lose every single election and to still walk around with a smile on your face. My libertarian friend. Yeah, its just so entirely inappropriate, you know. 11 people were just murdered on saturday and theyre laughing and he called them out. Weve got the drudge tweets and i wanted to ask you about this. Where essentially in one of them he says, is it really funny . Check your soul in the makeup chair. And fox has now responded. Yes, fox has released a statement to these rare drudge tweets, criticizing them. They said that kennedy made an unrelated quip at the end of the segment that was related to unity. There was no jokes. The lower third should not have been up during the duration of the segment, because it was not fully reflective of what panelists were saying. That said, i did watch the entire segment, brooke, and you know, they were sort of joking throughout the whole segment. While that lower third was up about the slaughter at the synagogue and these bomb squares, they were joking and they were laughing pretty freely. So while the segment does or the statement does pin it on kennedy and the end, what we just watched, i think it was a problem through the whole segment. And i want to point out, too, imagine if this were a cnn segment. If the roles were reversed it would be plastered all over if fox had received a bomb from a leftwing person and cnn had that segment onair, where we were laugh iing at about it d joking about things while having that chiron, i think they would be pretty outraged. So matt drudge is not someone whos a snowflake. Hes a conservative, he has a lot of credentials and hes even calling them out. Words matter. We know that the synagogue shooter invoked caravans and specifically called these people invaders, back to your points about what we found on social media with him. Let me just show you something that Newt Gingrich wrote for fox news on friday. The lead line. The caravan of an estimated 7,000 Central American invaders trekking through mexico towards the United States is roughly 11,000 miles from the nearest point of entry and he goes on and on. But the word i wanted to point out was invaders, because that is the exact same language that was used. Its not just Newt Gingrich, lou dobbs is being called out. And just back to you, is fox just spreading pure propaganda at this point . Well, i think its certainly irresponsible to use this term. Because what do you do with invaders, brooke . Do you let invaders come in . No, of course not. And Newt Gingrich asked in his column, like, we have to do something about these invaders. And the natural question is, what do you do with invaders when theyre coming item you stop them. And so i think its irresponsible for fox to be running these segments and these columns that call migrants invaders. And another point, its just misinformation. The fact is, if you want to but it gets repeated and repeated and repeated. These people arent just going to come and flood over the border. The likely scenario is the theyre coming to the nearest checkpoint and declare asylum. And to declare asylum in the u. S. , you need to be physically present in the u. S. So the only way to do this would be marching to the u. S. And declaring asylum at a checkpoint. So not only is it just irresponsible and frankly disgusti ining language, its spreading misinformation to fox viewers. So we were here saturday night, and it was a tough night for a lot of people covering the breaking news and the synagogue. And i mentioned earlier, you know, this is personal for you. Your father survived the holocaust. And i just wanted you to have the last word. Thank you for that. I spoke with my father after a segment. He was deeply appreciative of all the compassion thats being shown. But the most poignant thing that he told me yesterday is that at our synagogue in connecticut, the vigil last night was filled with many members of the jewish community, but members from all faiths. And that for him was so overwhelmingly important, because what he has told me is scapegoating the jews is nothing new. And when you scapegoat something, you displace blame on to them. It was the jews on saturday, it was africanamericans earlier in the week. And so right now, what we have to do is quell that hate, because it will move on to another minority group. Whether its migrants or refugees. Name your minority group. So what we need to do right now is all come together as a community. We need to speak up against conspiracy theories on fox news, against the president spreading misinformation, even today, about what the media is, because thats thats how we get at the source of the hatred. Social media is a piece of that, but we have to go to the source. Call it out, condemn it, thank you, oliver and laurie and sam. Appreciate it very much. Coming up next here, an 80yearold man who survived the holocaust says he could have been one of the victims in the tree of life synagogue if he had not been running late just by four minutes. To me, as a rabbi, as a jew, one antisemitic act is one act too many. Im not just concerned about the rise of antisemitism, im concerned about the rise of hate in our country. That was Rabbi Jeffrey Myers from tree of life synagogue just a few moments ago. I want to introduce you to a man who narrowly avoided the synagogue shooter. Hes 80 years old. His name is judah sommet. He survived the holocaust as a child. He was running four minutes late on saturday, arriving at the tree of life parking lot to find police in a shootout with the gunman at his place of worship. Judah sommet joins us now. Thank you so much for being with us. Im sorry its under these circumstances. By all means. Can you tell me a little bit about what happened when you got there . I was moving in, along the building, you have a handicap lane, and i have a handicap ticket, i have problems with my knees. So i moved in slowly and this guy came, knocked on my window, somebody dressed almost like you, black coat, black pants, white shirt. And he said, you better back out, there is a shooting going on in the synagogue. Hmm. And he did it twice. It took me maybe a minute to process. Yeah. Whats going on. And all of a sudden, i see this guy standing right outside my car, behind the wall, with a pistol and he started shooting. And he was shooting two, two, two, two, three. The other guy was answering with rapid fire. Mmhmm. Da da da da, da da da da, da da da da. So im a curious guy. So, eventually, i move towards the passengers, so i could see him. You wanted to see what was going on . Yeah, i wanted to see who he was shooting, who the policeman was shooting. I figured he was a detective. And i saw the guy. He was only about four or five cars from me. So did he have an expression on his face, or well, he was busy shooting, you know . Uhhuh. So, i didnt look at his eyes real good, but i saw the rest. I have been questioned by the fbi three times. And i said, the first thing i noticed that he had i wasnt sure if it was a wind breaker, light blue, or it was his shirt. And he had a, jeans, blue jeans. So was the detective, also. He had a wind breaker. This guy didnt have it. And that thing went on for maybe 90 seconds or Something Like that. And then he disappeared. Yeah. And then what did you pull out . Well, it was very hard to back out, because there were other cars backing out at the same time. There were no cops yet. Mmhmm. And then i started to go home, i see all those hundreds of Police Vehicles coming from all over the place. Right. And they looking at the guy, yes, he looked very concentrated, very focused. Da da da da, da da da da. And they asked me, what was the color, was it an uzi . I said, no, my ammo in the military was an uzi you were in the israeli military, so you know . Yeah. My ammo, because i was a radio man, was an uzi. Also, you survived you were in the israeli military, you survived the holocaust. You were in bergen bellson as a child, 6 1 2 years old. Yeah, well, 7, i turned 7. And we survived because of my mother. She spoke fluent german, so she was the interpreter. But thats not what helped us survive. My mother, rachel, was 410, beautiful woman, you know . Brilliant off the box. And they she was guts, sheer guts. Guts. She was unbelievable. And she saved a lot of jews. Because when the train came for us, finally, and they she noticed that they were putting two buckets in each car. Those small buckets, you know, that milk farmers use to milk their cows in, three gallon or so. The one with the water, and the other one was for toilet purposes, and then they loaded us, 70, 80. So it was standing room only. In boxcars. So my mother did something that would have killed her. She addressed the commandant. She said, i know where we are going. This water is not going to be enough. What will we do . You know, along the way, they say, what happened to the germans . They used to be the flower of europe. So, uh, there was a sergeant, gestapo. There was always a sergeant with the commandant. He took his gun, put it to my mothers head. Hitler had a very specific rule. If a joew opens his mouth, you shoot them dead. The only way they can talk, you answ they ask a question, with you answer it. Did you ever think you would be faced with that kind of hate here in pittsburgh . Well, i know that you have all of those White Supremacists organizations. In fact, the liberty paper is punished is published right here in west virginia, within maybe 50 miles or so from here. And i was always wondering, if Nothing Happened here, maybe they didnt want to do it here near their homes. So what is your message to those who hate . What is your message to those who did this . You know, there is a thing in the bible, not in the five books of moses, but i dont remember which prophet, alas, es a hates jacob. So i read, there was a wonderfulest say by james orwell, antisemitism and why. So why are they hated so much . And it says, i think its in their dna. Hatred is in their dna. People ask me sometimes, you know, i lost a brother in one of the wars in israel. I remember when he died, i came home and my mother said, at least he didnt die in bergen bellson, he died for the state of israel. It was somewhat of a pride in her. But they i remember i was asked, do you hate the arabs . And i said, jews dont have hatred in their dna. They dont know how to hate. In fact, they feel sorry for do you hate the man who did this . I dont know. I hate what he did. But i dont know the guy. Wow. But evidently, hes a subhuman. Well, lets i appreciate you talking to us. I know its a difficult day and youve been through a lot. Im a tough guy. You are a tough guy. Theres a lot of tough folks here and youre going to get through it. Judah, thank you. Its an honor. Thank you. Take care. Thank you very much. A tough guy. A tough guy, he says. Ill let you keep talking to him, anderson. Thank you so much. Appreciate him and his stories and his own personal history, its extraordinary. My next guest here coming up on cnn says antisemitism is like a canary in the mine shaft. What does he mean by that . Well discuss this horrific attack there at the pittsburgh tree of life synagogue, in the context of our nation and our worlds history. Stay with me. Come fly with me, lets fly, lets fly away. Come fly with me, lets fly, lets fly away. The Kenya Tea Development agency is an organization that is owned by tea farmers. Every week we sell this tea, we get paid in multiple accounts. With citi, we see a Bright Future for our farmers and their families. The white house is defending President Trumps response to the series of hate crimes across the country. He blames the media. Check his twitter. Not his own rhetoric for spreading rage and division. And with me now is cnn president ial historian, tim naftalian. Tim, i wanted to read this piece from the Washington Post this morning. The headline is, lets stop asking trump for comfort after tragedies. And she writes this. This president will never offer comfort, compassion or empathy to a grieving nation. Its not in him. When questioned after a tragedy, he will always be glib and inappropriate. So i have a wild suggestion. Lets stop asking him. His words are only salt in our wounds. Do you agree . I agree with patty davis. Antisemitism, hatred, bigotry, predates donald j. Trump. We as a nation, as a people, have to remember what our values are. The problem with donald j. Trump is that the positit is on the s, and he could turn down the heat. But instead he repeatedly turns up the heat and stirs even harder. We have to look to ourselves. We have to look to our communities. We have to look to our faith leaders. We have got to find it within ourselves to deal with this toxic political climate. Our president s have historically been the leaders. We are lucky. If you think about the amount of power that our president has, we are darn lucky that in a cold war, in world war ii and after the cold war, weve had more uniters than dividers. That was not inevitable. We happen to have a divider right now in the white house. We know that, because his goto position is a political position. In the past, weve had uniters. Patty davis father. John f. Kennedy. General ford. Frankl franklin roosevelt. Were lucky. Right now, we dont have that kind of leadership in the white house. We have each other. Lets not forget that. Thank you for that. With one minute to go, you and i were sitting here for special coverage saturday night. And you said that anti stsemit is like a canary in a mine shift. What did you mean . Whenever our country falls into these terrible moments of toxicity, antisemitism is on the rise. Whether 1930, 1940, when the country was debating whether to enter into world war ii, antisemitism was on the rise. During the mccarthyite period, antisemitism was on the rise. In vietnam, there was antisemitism. And we see it again. Unfortunately, its a sign of the sickness throughout our country. So everybody who is against hatred, everyone who is against those values that are clearly against those antiamerican values espoused by haters, they have to see what happened in pittsburgh as an attack on all of us. Yes. We all have to speak up as a result of it. Tim, thank you very much. Appreciate you. Coming up next, we remember the victims by name. The 11 beautiful human beings who were taken from this world too soon. vo this is not a video game. This is not a screensaver.
