The accusations against the new justice a, quote, hoax and false. This despite the fact that trump called one of kavanaughs accusers, Christine Blasey ford, credible and a fine woman. And as the president takes aim at democrats for what he says, what they did to his newly minted justice here, he is also slamming them for what may be ahead. Talks of impeaching Justice Kavanaugh. That is if democrats take control of the house, after election day, which is now less than one month away. Listen to President Trump from just moments ago. Hes a great person and it was very, very unfair what happened to him. False charges, false accusations. Horrible statements that were totally untrue, that he knew nothing about. Frankly, terms that he probably never heard in his leif. He was this, he was that. He never even heard of these terms. It was a disgraceful situation. Wrote about by people that are evil. And he toughed it out. I thought the way they behaved was absolutely atrocious. I have never seen anything like it. The way they really trortured hm and his family, i thought it was a disgrace. Now theyre thinking about impeaching a brilliant juror isa man that did nothing wrong, a man that was caught up in a hoax that was set up by the democrats, using the democrats lawyers, and now they want to impeach him. Lets go to sarah westwood, whos in orlando following the president. And he just spoke to this convention of International Police chiefs. And sarah, what was the response in the room when he talked about the hoax and the zprdisgrace an fabricated stories . Reporter well, brooke, President Trumps mention of nowJustice Kavanaugh to this room of Police Chiefs drew one of the most enthusiastic reactions of anything he mentioned. And keep in mind that he spent about half the speech praising the work that the audience does every day. The white house had billed this speech as one focusing primarily on Law Enforcement and border security, but, of course, trump took the opportunity to hit some of his favorite midterm themes, unemployment rates, fake news, Congressional Democrats blocking his funt iding, and most of all Justice Kavanaugh. Because as we know, trump and his allies have been hoping to use the bitter confirmation battle we just saw unfold as a way to motivate Republican Voters who might otherwise be complacent heading into the midterms. Republicans need to make up that enthusiasm gap. Theyve been long lagging behind democrats in terms of voter energy. Now, trump will have several chances to do that this week. Hell be heading to hawaii, pennsylvania, ohio, kentucky for rallies this week. And trump also took this opportunity to put to rest a story that has, at times, threatened to overshadow his agenda, and thats tensions with his Deputy Attorney general. Trump from the stage thanked Rod Rosenstein for his work, and said he had a good talk with the Deputy Attorney general, as they were flying on air force one down here to orlando. So clearly, not trying to blunt the momentum that he thinks he has off the kavanaugh victory. Brooke . Right. The report of that potential firing, so three weeks ago. Sarah westwood in orlando, sarah, thank you very much. Brett kavanaughs ascent to the u. S. Supreme court, now solidifies its conservativeleaning majority with Justice John Roberts at the helm. So how will he manage this New High Court . With me now, joan biskupic, how does the nomination of Justice Kavanaugh now change the Supreme Court . Well, brooke, its a whole new court. And his confirmation changes the courts biography and its ideology. And well start first with what really makes a difference to people out there and thats how they might rule on the law of the land. Chief Justice Roberts now becomes the justice whos sort of towards the center, ideologically, but he is no Anthony Kennedy. Brett kavanaugh succeeded Anthony Kennedy who was the sentist swing vote justice. Judge kavanaugh is much further to the right, so we can expect this court to be much more conservative. Some people, brooke, are casting chief Justice Roberts at the center now, the middle justice, but he will be no swing vote. He will probably, at best for the liberal side, inch a little bit over to their side, because of his interest in trying to steady the court. Thats he will be the man to watch, more so than Justice Kavanaugh, as we go forward. And another thing about the biography of the justices that people have pointed out, talk about their pedigrees. Justice kavanaughs addition to the court reinforces the harvard, yale, ivy league makeup of these justices. We have five justices who attended harvard, four who graduated from there. Justice ginsburg, as you probably remember, attended harvard and finished up at columbia, when she moved to new york city with her husband. And with Justice Kavanaugh, we now have four who went to yale. And heres something new in terms of the sort of elite milestones of this court. We now have a full majority, fivise justices, who themselves were former law clerks. Chief Justice John Roberts was a law clerk to william rehnquist. Justice kavanaugh clerked for justice kennedy, as did neil gorsuch. Stephen breyer clerked for arthur goldberg. And that gives us and elena kagan clerked for Justice Thurgood marshal. We now have a majority on the court that not just comes from elite ivy league background, but came up through the even more elite channels of Supreme Court law clerks. And then i know at one point, we had talked about the religious makeup of this court. Justice kavanaugh, who is a catholic, secedes another catholic, Anthony Kennedy, and its intriguing to know that on this Supreme Court, we have five catholics, three jewish justices, and one protestant. So really, kind of different than the makeup throughout the united states, brooke. Incredible. The faces, the additions and thinking so many of them having clerked for other justices, speaking of clerks. Joan, thank you. Brett kavanaugh won confirmation by the slimmest margin ever for a u. S. Supreme court justice, but now he will be making history in a much different way. He will be the first justice to be backed by all female law clerks. It is an achievement he fores d foreshadowed in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee Last month. I had to, in essence, contentionly hire a first group of four law clerks who could be available to clerk at the Supreme Court for me on a moments notice. I did so askand hired four law clerks. All four are women. If confirmed, ill be the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have a group of allwomen law clerks. Let me bring back sarah pitlick. She clerked for then judge kavanaugh on the court of appeals, from 2010 to 2011. So, sarah, welcome back to you. You know, weve heard Justice Kavanaugh, you know, certainly talking about the women who deeply influenced him, as he was introduced to the country by the president. He spoke about, also, women who hes hired in the past like you. Whats your reaction to him bringing on all women clerks . Well, its not at all a surprise to anyone whos been a part of his clerkship recruitment process. As he described in detail in his confirmation hearings, he has always really since assuming the bench in 2006, he has always paid special attention to trying to level the play iing field fo the top echelon of legal opportunities or opportunities for law students. And hes done that by hiring more women clerks than any other judge, a greater number of women clerks than male clerks, a greater number of diverse clerks than other judges. So this doesnt come as much of a surprise at all to anyone familiar with him. And how did he treat you . He was excellent to me. Actually, im a pretty good example of something he described at his confirmation hearing. He talked about how one of the ways he tries to level that Playing Field is by looking outside the traditional, conventional pipeline of clerks, the sort of elite few professors who, lets say, recommend the most clerks, the people coming from the law reviews at the top law schools. I did not meet the judge through the traditional channels and when i met him, i was not planning to clerk. I didnt think it was consistent with some of my other life goals at that time. I was a little bit earlier than the average law graduate, i was married and i wanted to start a family and it was the judge really who encouraged me for the first time to think about clerking as something that was compatible with my other goals as a woman and a mother and so this, again, is very consistent with my experience. So you have this positive experience, but there will be, sarah, there will be this cloud hanging over him. Half of the country is thrilled, half of the country, though, believes that there is an alleged sexual assailant now on the nations highest court. How does he overcome that . I think Justice Kavanaugh will make a name for himself, just as judge kavanaugh did for evenhandedness, for rigor, for attention to detail, for collegiality, for all of the things that Everyone Wants in a judge and a justice on the Supreme Court. So i think thats how he will distinguish himself. And just lastly, i dont know if you caught some of the president s comments earlier. The president today called the democrats attacks against Justice Kavanaugh a hoax. A hoax. Would you agree with that characterization of calling it a hoax . I would not take any opinion on whats transpired as a matter of partisan politics or whos done what to whom in the process. Politics is not really my purview. I dont know anything about, about the individuals who made complaints, but i know that what we eventually saw was not necessarily what they intended. So whether or not something was a hoax, i think youd have to parse, you know, exactly what actions hes talking about and who they were performed by. You are going to the swearing in tonight. What do you will you have a chance to speak with him . What do you plan on telling him to just mark this moment . Well, i hope to speak to him and i hope to just tell him congratulations and that im very, very happy for our country and for him. Sarah pitlyk, thank you very much. Thank you. Get published now, call for your free publisher kit today ntsb investigators in upstate new york will hold a press conference in 45 minutes or so about saturdays deadly limousine crash that killed 20 people. Cnn has learned new details about the driver and the company that owned the limo. State Officials Say the driver was not licensed to operate it and that this limo should never have been on the road, because it wasnt certified. It had just failed a vehicle inspection as recently as last month. Meantime, grieving family members of the victims are just devastated. Devastated. Erin was one of the most beautiful souls. She loved her family. She loved everybody. Everybody loved her. She had such a beautiful smile and just lit up the room when she came in. We always said she was fomo, fear of missing out, because she just loved to be with everybody and have fun and just be around family, which was probably the most important thing in all of our lives, was being together. She was married. She was 34 years old, not 26. Oh, okay. And her husband just turned 30. They were married june 8th. And we celebrated their wedding with all of our friends and family. And this is just a tragedy beyond comprehension for all of us, including all of the other families who were affected by this. The victims all friends, some members of the same family, were headed to a 30th Birthday Party for one of the passengers. Polo sandoval is in upstate new york with more on this story. And a press conference happening, polo, at the top of the hour. And still, im sure all of these families are just devastated, but furious to know that this limo was on the road. To that point, yes, theyre devastated. They are heartbroken, but now they are angry, especially the last few hours, of course, with this new information being revealed by the states top executive, andrew cuomo, saying that not only did that vehicle, that limousine fail inspection last month, but also the driver who was behind the wheel, according to the governor, did not have the proper license to be able to drive that vehicle, to be able to drive those 17 people through this part of new york. I can tell you that a lot of that anger right now is really coming from amsterdam, new york. Thats because many of the passengers of that limousine that were either from there or had some tie to there. So speaking to the assemblyman from that city a little while ago, angelo santa barbara, he tells me that the company will be held accountable, particularly prestige limo and chauffeur service here in upstate new york. Of course, there are so many questions that will be directed towards that company. In the meantime, were hearing more of these human stories, the memories that many family members are sharing. I had an opportunity at the crash site to speak to the younger sister of one of the 26yearold victims who was aboard that limousine, amanda halse was traveling with her boyfriend in the back of that limousine. Her sister, karina, went back to the site to not just see where it happened, but how it happened. This is one of those memories shes holding on to tonight about her older sister. The last time i did see her was last saturday. Me, her, and my mom all went to a flower shop in vermont. It was just a quick little getaway, took about an hour to get there. It was just a nice gettogether for all three of us girls to have a nice day out. And i think it was a nice sendoff, i guess. Because that would be the last time i would ever see her in person. Reporter and as we continue to hear more of those human stories, just a quick recap of the main headline now, the governor announcing that that vehicle was never supposed to be on the road in the first place. But also, that that driver was not certified or at least not licensed to driver it. Still, a big question, though, brooke, how did this actually happen . Well hear from authorities in the next hour and see if they have an answer well listen for it. Just awful. Polo sandoval, thank you so much, in new york. Right now Hurricane Michael is on course to hit the Florida Panhandle as a major storm. The next 36 hours are crucial, because we could see michael make landfall as a category 3 with devastating impacts. In all, in florida, 26 counties are under states of emergency and governor rick scott is warning families to be prepared. So lets go straight to cnn meteorologist jennifer gray. Jennifer, whats the timing of this thing . This could be a major storm by tomorrow afternoon. It is expected to make landfall on wednesday, but this storm is intensifying rapidly and it is getting stronger by the second. 75mileperhour winds right now with gusts up to 90, producing a lot of rain shower activity across the west coast of cuba. This is going to continue to strengthen, becoming a category 3 and possibly making landfall as a category 3 on wednesday, along the Florida Panhandle, somewhere along that florida alabama line, through the big bend of florida, taking it to the north and east and possibly dumping a lot of rain on the carolinas. We saw all of the rain from florence just a couple of weeks ago. So already seeing those showers in cuba, along the florida keys, and the models are getting a little bit better in agreeing where this is going to go. Of course, theres still time for this jog to the east or west a little bit, but as of right now, both of the models have this just to the west of panama city. So the dirty side of the storm, the stronger side of the storm, which is the east side, would be nearapalachicola, the big bend, and as this races off to the north and east, all of coastal south carolina, north carolina, could get dumped with a lot of rain, as well. Hurricaneforce winds extend about 30 miles from the center. Tropical Storm Force Winds extend about 175 miles from the center. And so, the winds are going to be farreaching, and could have huge impacts along the coast of florida, even up through georgia and alabama. So, hurricane watches are infect, Tropical Storm watches are infect. We could see 8 to 12 feet of storm surge in the big bend of florida, so do expect some incredible amounts of flooding, brooke, but the wind, i think, is going to be the biggest concern with this particular storm. Got it. Jennifer gray, thank you very much. Coming up next, a writer for the Washington Post is feared dead after he walked into a Saudi Arabian embassy and never walked out. Make it, squarespace the outrage is growing after reports that a missing Washington Post journalist may have been kidnapped or possibly killed. Jamal khashoggi recently published some criticism against saudi arabias crowned prince. He was last seen tuesday walking into the saudi consulate in istanbul in turkey to collect papers for his wedding in a couple of days. Khashoggis fiancee who waited for him outside the building said he never emerged. Turkish officials now believe he may have been killed while inside. Saudi arabia is denying any involvement. U. S. Officials say they cannot confirm what happened to him, but two Senior Administration officials tell cnn that the u. S. Is quote unquote, quietly trying to figure out what happened to khashoggi. Clarissa ward is with me now from london. And clarissa, the turkish president , president erdogan, hes not buying the saudi side of things here. What are you hearing in this investigation . Well, president erdogan is saying to the saudis, essentially, brooke, put your money where your mouth is. If he really did leave the consulate, as you claim, provide some evidence to back that up. Show us the documentation, show us the surveillance video, the saudis saying that they cant provide any surveillance video. That obviously raising a lot of red flags. The turkish state news agency, anadolu also reporting somewhat mysteriously that Turkish Police say 15 saudi nationals on two separate planes arrive on the day of the disappearance. Among them, government employees, that they have since left the country. Really, clearly, turkey saying that they believe foul play is at hand. They havent decisively come out and said, for a matter of certainty, that khashoggi was killed in the consulate. But, so far, the saudis have done nothing, essentially, to refute that, beyond saying, you know, it didnt happen, we strenuously deny this. The real story is that he actually left the consulate. And the question becomes, brooke, why didnt the fiancee see him as he left the consulate . And all of this is happening, important for our viewers to remember, against the backdrop of a major crackdown on any form of dissent in saudi arabia. One thing that really gave me chills was listening to an interview that cnns hala gorani did with khashoggi, just one year ago, where he told her that he had received a threatening phone call from someone in the royal court, saying that he must be silent and that had precipitated his decision to try to seek residency in the u. S. I was talking to Jason Rezaian about this. Of course, he knows jamal, and he said he knew and you know, jason would know, you put yourself at risk when youre writing about a country like this, but he was a journalist, and this is what he knew he needed to do. I want to ask you about another disappearance, the former head of interpol disappeared two weeks ago after a flight to beijing. Today the Chinese Government ended the speculation over his whereabouts, announcing that they have detained him. Would you expect the u. S. To weigh in on that . I would say, brooke, at this stage, it would be very difficult for the u. S. To weigh in on this. Its clearly a very sensitive moment in the u. S. china relationship. In fact, just today, weve seen secretary of state mike pompeo in beijing, sitting down with his chinese counterpart, according to pool reporters, who were there. It was quite a tense meeting, reportedly bold and aggressive language being used. The Chinese Foreign minister coming forward and saying that the u. S. Should immediately stop its wrong remarks and actions. Important to keep in mind, the u. S. Has essentially waged a trade war against china. There are very really disputes that the u. S. Has had with china for quite some time now, about taiwan, about the south china sea. So its a very delicate moment in this relationship, and against the backdrop of this, we have to remember that the white houses policy and desire for a r reproach reproach reproachermal, its difficult to know how committed the chinese will want to be with that, but certainly, it will be very risky for the u. S. To weigh in on this largely internal issue without knowing more about the charges behind them. With all of this swirling, you had former secretary of state colin powell on cnn, speaking with fareed zakaria. This is someone who we havent seen speak up in quite a while, blistering criticism of the administration. Here he was. My favorite three words in our constitution is the first three words. We, the people. We the people. But recently, its become me, the president , as opposed to, we, the people. And you see things that should not be happening. Do you think, clarissa, this is all part of trumps America First policy . Well, its really difficult, brooke, to get a gauge on what the thinking is in trumps white house, visavis, international relations. There doesnt seem to be a larger coherent strategy. Certainly, there is nothing typical if you look at the u. S. s previous foreign policies, previous president s, theres nothing typical. Theres nothing really to go on here as someone whos watching the world, as someone whos reading all of the analysis out there. Its very difficult to know where exactly President Trump is going with all of this, with these various policies that he has set in motion. But certainly, to many across the globe, there has been a clear signal from the u. S. That the u. S. Is concentrating on America First, that they are not as concentrated on what the outside world has done, is doing. And that, of course, opens a lot of doors for people to do whatever they want, essentially, brooke. Clarissa ward, good to see you. Thank you so much. And i love you [ applause ] this woman has let me cry in her dressing room all year last year. I would go in before the show and she would let me cry on her shoulder. My fathers final farewell address, he said, were americans and we can Never Surrender. Thats how i feel. We can Never Surrender to what is happening in the country right now. I understand how divided and how scared a lot of people are and it looks like the fabric of democracy the fraying. We do not surrender. Im not surrendering. You dont do it either. So you have to join me in not surrendering. Okay . Mccain also said her father would have loved the tributes paid to him, both in arizona and in washington. Meantime, taylor swift is in the news, stepping out of her comfort zone, weighing in on politics. The pop star has always been quiet about her beliefs in the past, but that changed last night in an Instagram Post where she endorsed democrat Phil Bredesen in the Tennessee Senate race and democrat jim cooper for house of representatives. She wrote this, in part. I believe in the fight for lbgtq rights and that any form of discrimination based on Sexual Orientation or gender is wrong. I believe that the systemic racism we still in this country towards people of country is terrifying, sickening, and prevalent. As much as i have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, i cannot support marsha blackburn, her voting record in congress appalls and terrifies me. With that, swift now joins the likes of kanye west in having bad blood with fans over their political stances. Lets go to joel abert, a political reporter for the tennessean and david litt, former speechwriter for president obama. And joel, i want to go to you in tennessee. How is this playing and keeping in mind, this is a place where the president recently campaigned and essentially said, a vote for marcia is a vote for me. Can taylor swift compete with that . Well, the president is extremely popular here. The polling suggests that he still remains very popular in tennessee. At the same time, Marsha Blackburns demographic is probably not going to be taylor swifts audience. So i think what taylor swift is trying to do is get young voters to get really energized and for two candidates that are, you know, one is over 60, the other over 70, meaning bredesen, this is really her effort to really get young voters out there, to see bredesen for, you know, her support for him. Bredesen. David, and i loved your note to my producer, so im just going to read it out loud. Full transparency, there was a time when you were at the white house that you actually, its my understanding, had to drive four staffers to a taylor swift concert very quickly. So we understand where your bias is, so were all clear. But i think about 2016 and all the star power behind hillary clinton. Where did that get her . I have to give a shoutout to the other staffers. On air force one, trying to get back, jump in the car, make it to the stadium for the huge concert. So i feel like this is coming full circle. But i think the important thing right now, when you think about the midterm elections, versus a president ial election, in a president ial election, young voters turn out at lower rates than older voters, but not appallingly lower. In midterm elections, young voters tend to basically not turn out at all. So if you can get young voters who already show up in president ial years in 2016 to decide, oh, yeah, actually, im also going to show up in 2018 in approximate a midterm year thats a game hchanger. Joel, over to you in tennessee. How difficult will it be getting young voters out, young voter during mid terms . Are they even listening . I think theyre certainly listening. Brettson has really tried to tout some of the young voters. He had a concert, a fundraiser with jason isabelle, a renown country artist in nashville. Got a lot of young supporters for it. So i think what hes trying to do is educate the young voters who werent around when he was governor, you know, eight years ago. So he needs to get them energetic. And in this razorthin margin, this race is neck and neck. Some polling suggests blackburn is up five points or so. Its going to take anything that could swing it in one direction or the other. Do you think, david i dont know how many people here care more about taylor swift versus the outcome of these elections. But could taylor swift just have blowback . You saw what happened with the whole dixie chicks thing. I do think you had the Republican Senate Campaign Committee try to pull a kanye, get her quiet as soon as possible. But i think that the important thing here to remember is 112 million thats how many instagram followers taylor swift has. So that ability to bypass the traditional back and forth, to not have to put out a press release and have it criticized and taken out of context, but to speak directly to 112 million fans, thats a huge difference. And were seeing that throughout politics these days. If you can talk directly to the voters, it makes an enormous impact. And that we are talking about taylor swift and kanye west in politics, thats some crazy fullcircle moment, too. Jolie bert and david, thank you so much. Minutes from now, the ntsb will hold a News Conference about that deadly limo crash in upstate new york. We have learned that that limo as recently as a month ago failed inspection. And a dire new warning about Climate Change. The u. N. Saying the world is just 11 years from reaching a critical threshold that would cause devastating drought, wildfires and food shortages. So lets talk about what can be done to turn that around. vo this is not a video game. This is not a screensaver. And if we as individuals and countries dont make massive changes soon, the worst of all climate fears may become reality much sooner than anyone projected. The dire warning is coming from a United Nations panel made up of 91 scientists from 40 different countries. The bottom line is this. The world has just 11 years to get Climate Change under control or face devastating consequences. Cnn investigative reporter, john sutter, focuses on climate issues here at cnn. And so john, weve talked. Youve traveled the world, tracking Climate Change. What are these dire consequences in a matter of years . Yeah, i mean, i think its hard to overstate. And each time one of these warnings comes out, when these alarm bells are sounded, i think of places ive been around the world, like the Marshall Islands in the pacific ocean, these lowlying countries that really may not exist if we dont heed these warnings and change in unprecedented ways, like our Energy Systems and the way that our economies function, essentially. The Marshall Islands, seeing pictures of it there, barely peeks out above sea level. What this report is saying, essentially, if we dont make massive changes basically to half our Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2030 or completely go carbonneutral, which, you know, essentially means very little burning of fossil fuels by 2050, countries like that might not exist. Closer to home, things like wildfires, devastating hurricanes, food shortages, migrations, theyre all a host of awful things associated with Climate Change. Were already seeing the beginnings of this now. And this report just underscores that there are massive changes that need to happen if were going to avoid the very worst consequences of global warming. You hit on some of those changes, but can you just be real with me . What of all these massive changes that would be required to coursecorrect this 11year deadline, what would that entail . I mean, it really entails a complete remake of our energy system. Burning fossil fuels contributes to the warming of the planet. 97 of scientists, climate scientists, agree on this point. Its very wellestablished. But basically, this report is saying that, you know, a future in which were safe from the worst of Climate Change is a future essentially without cold. Its a future without other fossil fuels, like natural gas or with, you know, those being used in much smaller quantities. Its an increase in cleaner forms of energy, like wind and solar. And, you know, we see these things happening, actually. Like, there are trends towards these cleaner forms of energy happening around the world. But what this report is saying, we have to accelerate towards that much, much faster than is currently happening. That could be, you know, enormously expensive. This report points out, you know, a chunk of global gdp. But there are also other reports that talk about the expenses, financial and in lots of, you know, life and other things if we dont act. You know, a lot of the worlds most valuable property is right on the coast. In the u. S. And china, all over the world. Not just in places that are far away like the Marshall Islands. And so this report, again, is sounding these alarm bells and saying that something has to change. Sure. Youve been fortunate to see a lot of these places that, you know, could disappear, and you realize just how valuable, how precious this planet really is. John sutter, thank you. If you want to read about this report, just go to cnn. Com. Im brooke baldwin. Thanks for being with me. The lead with jake tapper starts right now.
