Gentlemen, you are going to see the results of both our meetings today and of the declaration that we have signed together with mr. President. Of course we are talking about long term processes. So im sure that you will see how this will be filled with concrete and concrete pacts that will appear in agreements and in purchases that will be realized. John decker of fox please. Thank you, mr. President. Two questions for you. One on judge kavanaugh and also one on trade. Judge kavanaugh, yesterday you said we want to go through a full process, make sure everything is just right. To that end, what would be the problem with the fbi reopening their Background Investigation into judge kavanaugh . Would you support such a thing . It wouldnt bother me other than the fbi said that they really dont do that. That is not what they do. Now, they have done supposedly six background checks over the years as judge kavanaugh has gone beautifully up the ladder. He isintellect, great judge. Impeccable history in every way. In every way. I feel so badly for him that he is going through this to be honest with you. I feel so badly for him. This is not a man that deserves this. This should have been brought to the fore, it should been brought up long ago. And that is what you have hearings for. You dont wait until the hearing is over and then all of a sudden bring it up. When senator feinstein sat with judge kavanaugh for a long period of time, a long, long meeting, she had this letter. Why didnt she bring it up. Why didnt the democrats bring it up then . Because they obstruct and because they resist. That is the name of their campaign against me. They just resist and they just obstruct. Frankly i think they are lousy on policy and in many ways lousy politicians. But they are very good on obstruction. And it is a shame because this is a great gentleman. With all of that, i feel that the republicans, and i can speak for myself, we should go through a process. Because there shouldnt everyone even be a doubt. Shouldnt be a doubt. Again, they should have done this three months ago. Not now. But they did it now. So i dont want to play into their hands. Hopefully the woman will come forward, state her case. He will state his case. Before representatives of the United States senate. And then they will vote, they will look at his career, they will look at what she had to say from 36 years ago, and we will see what happens. But i just think he is at a level that we rarely see. Not only in government, anywhere in life. And honestly i feel terribly for him, for his wife who is an incredible lovely woman. And for his beautiful young daughters. I feel terribly for them. On trade, mr. President , you announced new trade tariffs against china. Trade tariffs are very important part of your economic and trade policy. In your first year in office, the u. S. Trade deficit increased by 12 . And last month we saw the trade deficit increase to i believe it was 72 billion. So my question to you, is your trade tariffs policy working . We just started. We didnt do anything with respect to china because we wanted to have the benefit of china having to do with north korea. And they have been helpful. I hope they are still helpful. There is a question about that. But it got to a point where the numbers were too big. This should have been done for the last 20 years. If you look at the wto, the world trade organization, that is when china really happened economically. It was like a rocket ship because they took advantage of the rules of the wto. And whoever was standing at this podium in this incredible white house in the oval office, sthee ha they 1450 have done something about this long ago. Over the last number of year, china has taken out of this country 500 billion and more. A year. 500 billion. That would go a long way for on poland, wouldnt it . Rebuild your whole country. And that is what china did. They rebuilt their country with tremendous amounts of money pouring out of the United States. And ive changed that around. And haif you look at what is gog on, our market is going up like a rocket ship. I dont want their market to go down, but their market is down 32 in three months because we cant let them do anymore what they have done. And i watched trade deficits because to me deficits are very important. They are not everything and they are not exact. Sometimes you can have a deficit and that is not such a bad thing. But when you have 375 billion in trade deficits, and then many billions of dollars in other liabilities of all different types, you have to do something about it. We are the piggybank to the world. We have been ripped off by china. Weve been ripped off by excuse me mr. President , the European Union, of which youre a part of. Weve been ripped off by everybody. And i want to protect the american worker, the american farmer, the ranchers, the companies. And were not being ripped off, you will see, in a little while. Speaking of that, weve come to a conclusion with mexico. We have a wonderful deal for both parties. It was a very onesided deal. Now takes good deal for boit is parties. The new president , had conversation and it was terrific. I think well have a very good relationship. Well see. Well see. We want help on the border because we have the worst immigration laws in the history of mankind or womankind. We have horrible immigration laws and we want help. But weve come to a conclusion with mexico. Canada has taken advantage of our country for a long time. We love canada. Love it. Love the people of canada. But they are in a position that is not a good position for canada. They cannot continue to charge us 300 tariff on dairy products. And that is what they are doing. So this is a process. It takes a little time. The European Union wouldnt talk to us. They wouldnt talk to president obama. And then i said that is okay, you dont have to talk to me. Jean claude is a tough man, very good man. I like him, but he is tough. He is nasty. The kind of guy i want negotiating for me. But he is a tough cookie. And i said to him we have to renegotiate the deal. He said but mr. President , we are very happy with the deal. We dont want to negotiate. I said you may be happy with the deal, but im not happy with the deal. And he didnt want to renegotiate. And after three times, he still didnt want to renegotiate. I said that is okay, we dont have to renegotiate any longer. Were going to put a tariff on all of the millions of cars you send into the United States. And honestly, he was in my office so quickly from europe that i didnt know they had airplanes that flew that fast. I said where did you find this plane . And we have the semblance of a deal. Because it is to a large extent economically all about cars. Cars is a very big factor. And they send millions of bmws and mercedes into our country. So we are working on trade very hard, very important to me. It hats been for 30 years. Ive been saying for 30 years. Started with japan. I talked about japan. I was right. I talked about china. I was right. Its what i do. And i like doing it. But i like doing it for the people. Because our country has been abused and taken advantage of by virtually every country that it does business with. And were just not letting that happen anymore. And that includes what i said previously about the military. Please. President duda on, welcome back to the United States. As it relates to u. S. eu relations as the president mentioned, you are poland is a proud member of the European Union. How will you describe u. S. eu relations right now, did you talk about improving that relationship, did you carry a special message to the president from mr. Juncker . Translator sir, i would be very happy if it was poland which would disrupt the trade balance of the United States. I really would be happy if that was the case. Because my understanding as far as politics is concerned and caring the matters of the country is similar to the have you of mr. President. Mr. Trump says America First and i say poland first. So we understand each other very well. And has hard to be surprised the fact that mr. President being very experienced man, a man of success, as far as business is concerned knows how to calculate. He knows how to calculate and nobody puts that in the question either in the u. S. Or in other place and he takes care of the United States. It lies in the interests of the country to have a balance trade exchange and this is something that you have to take care of. And of course there is a clash of interests. However objectively looking, it is hard not to understand it. So there is always competition of interests. Every kind of business has a competition of interest. And i represent polands interests and President Trump represents americas interests. You have to strike an agreement to make sure that both countries wins and lose as little as possible and then we have an understanding, an agreement and then we can say that we are doopti i cooperating with each other on equal level. And i believe this is the kind of cooperation that mr. President would like to have with the European Union. And it would be hard to be surprised with that. Im listening proudly to that and i would like poland to be such an economic super power that it would be very important partner to the United States. I said jokingly in the beginning that i wish it was poland which disturbed the trade balance of the United States, but i do believe that our cooperation will develop well. And the trade deal with south korea has been fully renegoti e renegotiated and is ready for signature. We may sign it at the United Nations or shortly thereafter. That was a terrible deal for the United States. You how it now it is a fair deal. But that has been fully renegotiated. Thank you very much, even. Everybody. Thank you. Translator thank you. Well dissect what we 4erd heard in a second, but my two cents. Prefer to her by her name. She is not anonymous. She is not the woman as you referred to her, she is not the accuser, they is Christine Blasey ford. Gloria, david, nia and caitlyn are with me. Gloria, you heard the president say we should go through a process, i think he is inferring that we should offer to hear her out. He is again blame game on the democrats. Not a lot of compassion for the possible victim. No, look, i think the president believes as does Mitch Mcconnell that this is just a little political game that is going on to delay the nomination until after the midterms. And he kept saying how badly he feels for judge kavanaugh and he clearly knows judge kavanaugh. But then you know, talked about the democrats only wanting to obstruct and that then, you know, lapsed back into the new trump were seeing and he has clearly been schooled on this saying that there shouldnt be a doubt. There should not be a doubt. But again saying when he was asked the question about should the fbi get back into this and look into this, he said that is not what they do. And of course we know that that is what they do if the president asked them to do it. They dont come to conclusions, but they can investigate what the president asked them to investigate. So were at kind of a stalemate here. And the president is low keying this, but there is no doubt that what the republicans are saying is this is a political game the democrats are playing and she, professor ford, needs to show up on monday. David, what did you think of the president . Yeah, it is interesting to watch him here because he says i dont want to take the democrat bait here. I dont want and yet he seems somewhat trapped by the democrats here because he then as gloria noted says but there should not even be a little doubt at all, we must go through this process. This is the second day in a row that we have seen a remarkably calm, collected President Trump on this topic on something that is a potential mortal threat to one of his biggest accomplishments, changing the Supreme Court and something that unifies his party. And you could just see he clearly is aware of how big this moment is by how he is suppressing what we have come to learn to be his normal behavior in these scenarios. It is a totally fascinating thing to watch happen here. But he is so clearly trying to call democrats out at their game and yet still somewhat trapped by it. Nia, im coming to you. But quickly caitlin, youre in the room. What was your biggest takeaway. Reporter the president s biggest argument here was that this is a man who does not deserve this. Now, the president s exact quote. And President Trump voicing sympathy for his family, for him, saying essentially that he should not be having to go through this, that it is a terrible thing that he is having to go through with this allegation. Now, the president made no mention of the accusers name. He instead referred to her as that woman and laid out essentially what he thinks next monday should look like. He said that the woman should come forward, state her case, and that judge kavanaugh should also have a chance to state his case as well. And then he said that the senators should be able to go from there and vote on whether or not they are going to confirm him. Of course the president not mentioning Christine Blasey fords name at all, but instead focusing on the democrats once again saying why was this not brought up three months ago, why does senator feinstein specifically not bring it up when she was made aware of this allegation made against judge kavanaugh. But you no mention of the actual allegation, no mention of when he left the room and reporters were shouting questions at him about whether or not he believes the allegation and finds it credible. Instead simply expressing sympathy for her and then of course as gloria was saying, he said that he did not believe that this was something that the fbi should get involved in, but he made it sound like that is something the fbi has told him, essentially saying that that is what they do that is not what they do. But the president there not answering any other questions about the assault allegation. But he does seem to believe that this is not inasmuch turmoil as the rest of washington does. He seemed to be projecting confidence once again that he believes Brett Kavanaugh could still be confirmed even if there is a public hearing where this woman who has accused him of Sexual Assault comes forward and tells her story. Nia, we still dont know, the question mark even though we heard from professor fords lawyer that she would testify, she has yet to accept this invitation to do so. And so senator jeff flake is on the Senate Judiciary who essentially earlier had said without a hearing im a no vote, this is now what we have from his interview with jim acosta saying if ford fails to appear at the hearing, this is set for monday, he would support his partys push to move forward on a vote on kavanaugh. The direct quote, i think well have to move to the mark up. Yeah, and this is really key because jeff flake was one of the people that i think observers were looking at as somebody who might tank this nomination. He is not up for reelection. He has criticized this president quite frequently and in idea that maybe he would pull the john mccain here and go against the party. The fact that he at this point is on board with Going Forward with this voting process even is woman dr. Ford doesnt show up is good news for Mitch Mcconnell. It is good news for donald trump. It is good news for brett kavanau kavanaugh. And i think also what is clear is that dr. Ford doesnt really know what she is agreeing to. It isnt clear what this hearing would even be. Who is asking the questions. Are skes beiquestions even bein . You saw President Trump saying one person would get to talk, somebody else would get to talk and then the senators would decide. There has also been this idea that maybe their attorneys would come and they would ask questions. So i imagine that is one of the reasons she doesnt want to get locked in because she doesnt really know what she would be agreeing to at this point because it seems to be pretty much in flux. It does seem like the republicans are trying to seem accommodating, but also at the same time saying this would be completely on their terms. Thank you all so much. Well continue this conversation on the other side of break with a congresswoman who helped guide anita hill through her senate hear back in 1991 when she accused now Justice Clarence thomas of sexual harassment. Well get her thoughts, congresswoman Eleanor Holmes norton will join us. And also President Trump on the documents tied to the russia investigation. Securit this is the if. If Christine Blasey ford decides to testify about her allegations against judge kavanaugh, it would set the stage for a dilemma faced before. In 1991, anita hill accused then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. And the events that followed became a Pivotal Moment for women on capitol hill. Today anita hill penned an opinion piece in the New York Times and in part she wrote, there is no way to redo 1991, but there are ways to do better. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes norton was a group of key female lawmakers who famously walked from the floor of the house to demand their colleagues hear anita hill out. And she is with me now. She was also the first female head of the equal Employment Opportunity economics and helped write the original guidance on workplace sexual harassment. So congresswoman, a pleasure. Welcome. Of course. So the republicans so far have yet to get a response from professor ford. They are offering up to hear her out privately or publicly. Her lawyer had said that said she would testify. Do you get the sense that she is having second thoughts . No, i get the impression she is being advised by counsel. If i were her counsel, i would tell her that she should not do Clarence Thomas or let me be clear anita hill 2. 0. And that is what she is walking into. She is walking into a swearing contest. With a swearing contest, dr. Ford against kavanaugh, she is bound to lose the way anita hill lost in the beginning although we reap the benefit of her loss with the year of the woman and more women coming to the house and senate than ever before. But anita hill became a victim. This woman has thought through in fact did not come forward until she had thought through what this would be like. She is willing to testify i am sure, but that would be a were hearing, not a sham hearing. We dont have hearings in the house or the senate where there is one witness on your side, and one witness on their side. The minority ive been in the minority most of my time, they get to call its witnesses and the majority gets to call your. That isnt the way this is being set up. The only reason were having a hearing in the first place is because of the anita hill debacle. But they were supposed to have their hearing on thursday. You see they moved back to monday. So they already weve already got them on the run when it comes to fairness. But it sounds like we just i just got intel from senator jeff flake who had initially said if she doesnt testify, im a no. Of all republicans to evolve on sounds like they are having this hearing on on monday and if she doesnt show up, he is saying there should be a vote. So if she is listening to her counsel and her counsel is saying no, how is she speaking up and using her voice to keep who she believes as her perpetrator from becoming the next meck of the Supreme Court . I dont believe her counsel is saying no. I believe people are talking. I have no information whatsoever, but i believe her counsel is talking with the republicans about how this hearing should be in fact in fact held. And how to make it fair. I dont think that she is saying no, im not going to show up after saying that she will show up. We have to make sure that it is a were hearing, not a rump hearing. Back in 91, we know anita hill had one day to prepare. Can you talk to me about her preparation and her mindset going into that hearing . Well, she was a perfect witness and i dont know how she managed to do it. But she was a perfect witness only when you consider it was Clarence Thomas against per. And yet they required her to testify first, though she in fact became the rebuttal witness and in fact it should have been just the opposite. But we learned from the anita hill hearing that you cant do a hearing that quickly, that if you are going to do a hearing, it has to be a were hearing with all the preparation you you do with every other hearing. Thats not what were getting here and i think that 1 what her side is trying to force. Not saying i wont come and maybe she will come in any case. But if i were her counsel, i would say lets negotiate hugh this hahugh how this hearing is going to take place. If they want you, they want you badly, kavanaugh needs you badly, then lets do it well. And the way to do it well is to sit down and talk about how the hearing should be held. Im saying that only based on the kind of strategy that i would use, not based on any information that i have whatsoever. Sure. So perhaps we dont know, perhaps negotiations are happening in the meantime i wanted to ask you about comparing the atmosphere then on now. Because then nominee Clarence Thom thomas hearings, they had been concluded as have kavanaughs. And wham this bombshell drops. One party is pointing fingers at the other for this 11th hour quote unquote leak, mostly male committee. Mighty similar. So what is the biggest difference in your mind . The biggest difference is this, seven of us including me went on the house floor to do a one minute and we had to walk over to the senate in order to get any hearing whatsoever. It seems to me that the senate has at least learned that you have to get a hearing and postpone the hearing that they were about to set for thursday. But what were doing is a little at a time. Are we going to have to wait until the next hearing to get a were hearing or to the next incident because these incidents are coming fast and furious from judge kavanaughs generation. Are we going to have to wait to take the next step which is a fair hearing. And i think that is what is i hope being negotiated. What if that doesnt happen and they want this hearing and they want this if she doesnt show up, maybe even vote on monday and she doesnt show, then what . Then if she does not show, if we cant or her side cant get a fair hearing, and she doesnt show, i think that the tables are turned in the other way. And that the republicans will make hay of that, will say that he stands accused by someone who remains anonymous. That is why im hoping very much that she will show. I think she has thought this through, knows what she is going to say. Dr. Ford i think is ready. And i think she is doing the right thing. I dont think that she should just show under circumstances we have now. I think that the other side has everything to gain from her showing. And they need to negotiate with dr. Fords side. We remember from 91 that famous photo of on one side all white men and on the right side this lone black woman sitting there at that table. We know that today the make july of the Senate Judiciary committee is 17 men and four women. What kind of line do you think the men on this committee if she shows have to walk . I think they should be very careful. I dont think that you will have the typical crossexamination if i can call it that when we go to a hearing. The sides are really reversed. Their side is supposed to be lenient on her just to ask soft questions. But our side is going to ask the hard questions. Our side is going to have to ask her the harder questions so that it is clear what happened to her. The last thing that my republican colleagues are going to do is bring out her side of the issue. So they will try to treat her gently because will he cant afford do anything else. And they will then be on the defensive. He cant afford do anything else. And they will then be on the defensive. Which is why i hope that she will come. I dont think that she can lose. The republicans are already running for their lives in the house and the senate. So i hope that we are able to negotiate some sort of fairness so that she feels she can appear. Are is there anything that you would say to her if she happened to be watching cnn right now, having experienced what you did back in 91 to get her to show up on monday, what would you say . I would say to her that in the name of anita hill, please in fact appear. Know that the democrats are going to be there to protect you and know that at least Eleanor Holmes norton says that if she were in the senate, shed be negotiating right now to make sure that you got a fair hearing. You can do it, please come. Dont make dont give them the issue you with saying, see, she didnt show she wasnt credible and that is why she didnt show up. Congresswoman, great to see you again. Thank you very much. Of course. It is a move that has stunned and al lampearmed intele official tsz. President trump has ordered the declassification of sensitive documents and Text Messages related to the russia investigation. The materials include portions of the fisa application on former Trump Campaign aide carter page, it also includes the release of fully unredacted Text Messages from former intelligence officials like james comey and former agent peter strzok and fbi lawyer lisa page. Critics say it amounts to politicizing intelligence material ts and today the president defended releasing the documents. What i want is i want total transparency. This is a witch hunt. Republicans are seeing it, the democrats know it is a witch hunt too, but they dont want to admit it because that is not good politics for them. But it is a terrible witch hunt and it has hurt our country. And the things that have been found over the last couple of weeks about Text Messages back and forth are a disgrace to our nation. And i want transparency and so does everybody else. As you know congressional committees came to me and they wanted this. And i did it based on their request. But i think it is a good thing because we should open it up for people to see. Joining me now former general counsel of from of office of National Intelligence during the obama administration. Welcome, robert. Can you explain why this move is unprecedented . Well, the president talked about total transparency. Total transparency is really not consistent with intelligence operations. This sort of information is classified for a reason. It can involve sensitive sources and methods. Disclosing it can provide clues to our adversaries as to what kind of intelligence capabilities we have and how were using them. So i think that this is completely unprecedented for an application for a warrant from the fisa court to be released. I dont believe it has ever happened before. And it is unprecedented i think to have a president who is potentially implicated in the matters under investigation seeking to determine what is and is not going to remain classified. On your last point, could this move backfire against the president . Well, it is hard to tell without knowing what is in the documents. It is as i said a selective declassification. The president presumably is declassifying things because these are the matters that he wants declassified. But it is certainly not going to be total transparency in the sense of releasing everything that is the basis for this investigation. You say total transparency. That is not consistent for intelligence operations. Is there is a legal case to challenge this move . Probably not. Under the law the president has ultimate authority over all classification decisions. And if he wants something dehe classified, he can declassify it. It is a little unclear from the white house statement how much the Intelligence Community is going to be able to push back and say no, you really cant release this. I think well just have to see how that plays out. But if the president orders something released, it gets released. Is there any benefit just trying to think entirely on this, is there any benefit for the president to say i want transparency i guess what im asking, could this move benefit him . Well, i think you have to assume that he thinks so. I think again we dont though what is in the material that will be released. And well have to see how the variousthough what is in the material that will be released. And well have to see how the various spin doctors deal with it. But that very statement is an indication of why this is banned for t bad for the Intelligence Community because intelligence should not be politicalized. And this information will be taken by political partisans and used to their advantage. As if the relationship between the and Intel Community wasnt already frayed. I appreciate you coming on. Thanks. And rosie, let me start with you on what i just mentioned with the president s tweet about the 3,000 deaths and blaming democrats and adding them to the list. What did you think of that . I thought that it was very insensitive and it was adding insult to injury. Listen, if the electricity was restored in a deeply manner, if the troops were sent in a timely manner, if water supply was sent in a timely manner, maybe the death toll wouldnt be so high. And it is just insane to me that he would be attacking the residents of puerto rico now. Look at that young girl that you just showed. You know, it is just it is just demoralizing and unfair. Ramon, what do you think . I think that it is an awful message to send to folks who lost family members on the island that are dealing with mourning their losses. You know, i lost an uncle the losses. Its deplorable and sends an awful message. Just last week cnn, we caught these picture of 20,000 pallets of water still sitting on a tarmac in puerto rico. And now, you cant use them because the water is contaminated. To both of you, how is this happening . Well, i mean, you know, i think this is a lot of the stuff that was happening as soon as the storm hit when we had food resources and water stuck at the docks and the ports in puerto rico. Not allowed entry or, you know, when we were trying to receive help from International Countries it wasnt allowed. This is part of the bureaucratic red tape thats puerto ricos been dealing with, unfortunately. It is a constant when you see the footage you showed. This is something were dealing with today still. Nearly a year later. Nearly a year later. But you all are doing something about it. You have been working on doing something about it i know for a while. You both most recently in puerto rico in february and march. Tell me about the 100 roofs project. 100 roofs project is an initiative to help rebuild the over 60,000 homes that are still without roofs as a result of the devastation of Hurricane Maria. And we also are incorporating an Apprentice Program where we are teaching the homeowners and residents and members of the Boys Girls Club of puerto rico how to rebuild for themselves. Teach a man to fish is what were moving forward with. And we parter inned with heart 9 11 and today on brave and were going to have a gala commemorating the oneyear anniversary of Hurricane Maria on september 20th here in los angeles to raise funds to help pay for all the costs that are involved. Its substantial costs. Each roof is about 5,000 to build. And so, yeah. So were trying to move forward. Were trying to put a positive spin on the rebuilding of puerto rico instead of concentrating on the president s negative tweets. Well, lets end on the positive. Ramon, tell me a story of someone you were able to help. We were there in february, march. I was directing a documentary showcasing the process of not only rebuilding roofs but teaching locals carpentry. We were in a town in the center of puerto rico that was very neglected. There was no access to get up there. Roads had really fallen apart. For months. For months. We were working in a community that was, you know, the community was filled with people that were mute, really couldnt commute to the outside people and we were there building their roofs and to see the impact, i have to tell you we were there and the woman we were rebuilding her roof not a day i saw her she wasnt just crying. Looking out just crying and couldnt believe that these people just showed up at her doorstep, climbed up on her roof. These strangers she didnt know working on the roof and teaching a local kid jose carpentry and working with the carpenters, the message of how he feels that puerto rico is not giving up, resilient and keep fighting and hes excited that people out there that do care and that want to help them be empowered and move forward. So wonderful. 100 roofs with a f. We got you. Please go to the site and donate and rev rebuild puerto rico. Your tweets are wonderful but your actions speaks volumes. Yep. Rosie and roman, thank you so much. Brooke, thank you once again you are always there. You are always there on the front lines and always supporting. I love you. Love the mutual. Thank you both.
