We start with just the latest twist in this russia investigation as the investigative walls appear to be closing in on long time trump friend and adviser roger stone. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has his sights set straight on stones inner circle and one of the witnesses is defying him by refusing to appear. This guys not showing up for his grand jury testimony that was set to happen for today. The latest news from around the world with host Brooke Baldwin. With the Guccifer Pseudonym who was effectively a russian spy, so there are connections and thats just the tip of an iceberg that Robert Mueller has seen the bottom of and all the underneath of and we havent. When you look at, you know, michael, Andrew Miller, christine davis, this wikileaks back channel, what does it say when all of these people, your aides are being subpoenaed and you havent at all, as of today, been contacted by investigators. That cannot be a good sign. No. It could indicate that roger stone is, in fact, a target of the grand jury and normally targets of the grand jury are not brought into the grand jury unless theyre notified that they are a target and given the opportunity to try to convince the grand jury not to indict them. There are a lot of blinking red lights around here. About him and why hes not showing up. Reporter yeah. So he refused to go to court today to appear before the grand jury, brooke, so hes got the legal side of this, the legal fight. His lawyers say they plan to continue to fight the special counsels authority. They say its unconstitutional. They did that in court today. Andrew miller was found in contempt but whats interesting here the judge put the Contempt Charge on hold while millers lawyers appeal. Thats the legal wrangling here but who is Andrew Miller. Hes yet another associate of roger stone whos of interest to the special counsel. He worked for roger stone maintaining emails, but his lawyer has made clear hes only had limited contact with roger stone since 2014. Stone has said previously that Andrew Miller played a limited role in the 2016 campaign, but stone released a Statement Today saying that miller had no knowledge of any russian collusion, knew nothing about wikileaks, so roger stone really there saying, you know, why does the special counsel want to talk
to this guy, he shouldnt really be of interest to them in this broad russian collusion probe. The key here is that, you know, muellers team theyre keying in on roger stone, his interactions with wikileaks and now they want to talk to everyone in stones orbit who is in touch with him around that time and really get what they know. Andrew miller, hes defying this. Were seeing the Manhattan Madam In Court today. We know another associate of roger stone has now agreed to comply with the subpoena and, brooke, the key to that is in september 7th, thats six days past the September 1st Deadline that Rudy Giuliani had sort of arbitrarily set earlier this week, so we know that the Mueller Investigation is going full steam ahead and its going to continue into september, brooke . Speaking of that deadline, jessica, thank you. Michael over to you. We keep seeing Rudy Giuliani come on tv and radio shows and say september 1 this thing is going to be wrapped. Really . When Rudy Giuliani first
entered the world of trump and this case, he said it would be wrapped up in two weeks. That was a couple of months ago. Any one who relies on Rudy Giuliani for information about timelines that are outside of his control i think is making a mistake. Mueller will set the timeline and hell determine when its ready to go. Obviously, manafort is going to trial in Late September So Mueller is not shutting down on September 1st. Rudys comments were investigations of this sort cannot continue 60 days up until an election which is just made up. Were all better off not listening with, you know sort of to what giuliani says about dates. Theyre made up. If i just might add, michael, knows this yeah. Michael knows this far better than i, but when it comes to that 60 day window that michael just referred to, there are no rules or regulations
thats not a thing. Even customs that say there cant be any action. What the tradition is, is that there are no overt actions dealing with a candidate for office between labor day and election day. Now, the president is not on the ballot, but the theory behind pushing the September 1st date is that hes not officially on the ballot but he is metaphorically and politically on the ballot very much in these midterm elections. Dana bash and michael zell din, thank you so much. Coming up next, it only took one game of the nfl preseason and President Trumps already engaged in a feud with players over, you guess it, the national anthem. How much of this, though, is political strategy on trumps part . And what is the nfls next move . Also, her antiimmigration rant was beyond dog whistle. Criticizing massive demographic changes in america, does fox news have a white Anxiety Problem and can comments like these ever be walked back . Also kanye west at a rare loss for words when pushed over his support for President Trump, wait until you see this moment. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Why did i want a crest 3d white smile . Dinner date. Meeting his parents dinner date. So i used crest. Crest 3d white removes. 95 of Surface Stains in just 3 days. For a whiter smile. Medicare doesnt pay for everything. And guess what that means. Yep. Youre on the hook for the rest. Thats why its important to consider an aarp Medicare Supplement insurance plan, insured by Unitedhealthcare Insurance Company. A plan like this helps pay for some of what medicare doesnt. Call unitedhealthcare now to learn more and ask for your free decision guide. Want to apply . Go ahead, apply. Anytimes a good time. Remember, the 1 important thing, Medicare Doesnt Pay for everything. A med supp plan could help pay some of whats left. And this is the only plan of its kind endorsed by aarp. Thats the icing on the cake. I love cake. Finding the right aarp Medicare Supplement plan for you could be just a quick call away. So. Call. There were fine people on both sides. He said that not just once, by the way, he said it again even after all of the backlash. Here we are one year later, were discussing race and once again the most heated of ways of the president today renewing his attacks on these Football Players after several of them took a knee or raised a fist. He says that theyre unable to define theyre outrage. Nfl games which are played on american soil, by the way, are not the places to protest. On top of all of this, you have this fox news host blatant citing illegal and Legal Immigration that the america she loves doesnt exist any more as demographic changes. She cites race for not liking the america she sees and when spike lee whos new movie profiles a Real Life Confrontation with the kkk was
asked about charlottesville and how the racists werent even wearing masks, this is what spike lee had to say about racist in america and who is speaking to them. This guys got in the white house is not even a dog whistle. Its a bullhorn, and then also, weve seen a rise on the right, its not just americans, its worldwide. Kanye west has a different take speaking out in support of the president. Everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me and then told me every time i said i liked trump that i couldnt say it outloud or my career would be over, i get kicked out the black community, because blacks can only be democrats. You so famously and powerful said george bush doesnt care about black people it makes me
wonder what makes you think that donald trump does or any people at all . Why dont we take a break . Well come back and kanye west is here. I have with me Joe Madison Civil Rights Activists and host of the black eagle on the urban view channel, joe, it is always a pleasure. Thank you so much for coming on. Any time. So lets start with the nfl. I want to run through some of what we just talked about. Trump is tweeting that these players are unable to define their outrage. We know that many of them are calling on criminal Justice Reform which the president just held meetings on yesterday, so he knows full well, joe, why theyre protesting. He knows. And if he doesnt know, then what he should do is go meet with them and invite them, if they would show up, and listen
to what they had to say. You bring them in, hear what they have to say. First of all, lets be honest. These are intelligent young men and what he said is what i used to hear and many of us heard who remember 50 years ago in october, there were two young men, john carlos and tommy smith who stood in mexico city with their fists in a salute and barefoot and the reason they did it as john carlos told me was because they want to use that platform to draw attention. What we have to do is to make sure that President Trump and others and particularly on the right do not rewrite the narrative. It was about police brutality, it was about what randy moss did when he listed i think 17 names
of people who had been killed by police and so they know. These are intelligent young men and hes just rewriting it. They can define it and he knows it but to your point on have them over if theyd come, have a conversation, i dont know if the president wants to. Let me read you something from jerry jones the Dallas Cowboys owner this is what he said in a sworn deposition that donald trump said to him about this. This is a very winning, strong issue for me. Tell everybody. You cant win this one. This one lifts me. So my take away, joe, it seems to me that the president eats this up. Oh, he loves it and, by the way, its a distraction. It is absolutely a distraction. You would think the president of the United States with mueller breathing down his neck and down the necks of a lot of associates would be far more concerned
about his upcoming interview, testimony, whatever hes going to have with the special prosecutor. The reality is, this just simply is a distraction and hes not going to stop these young men from protesting. The reality is, its a political move. Thats all it is. How about so charlottesville, one year ago, happening i know. We dont one year ago happening this weekend. Go ahead, joe. What i was going to say, what bothers me the most is you now have an altright group, a group of neonazi, a group of White Supremacists that are coming to have an anniversary. You dont celebrate what happened a year ago in charlottesville. If anything, they should be a memorial for the young lady that lost her life, but i will say this. I believe theyre going to come, theres going to be a handful of
them. Theyll probably more anty protesters than there will be those that will be there for an anniversary. Who celebrates White Supremacy but a White Supremacist . Who celebrates naz iism but a neonazi. The reality is, im more pleased with the pastor of First Baptist church, A Predominantly White Church and the pastor of the 19th street, guess what theyre doing on sunday at 2 00, theyre having communion together at the foot of the Martin Luther king memorial. Thats what america really is about. Joe madison, thank you for coming on. We played the clip just quickly, spike lee, i want to tell everyone to stick around because his film is out today. Were talking to the man that plays the role of david duke and what that was like for this actor to put on this white robe and the research he did and the
things he found. Well have a fascinating conversation next hour. Thank you. Any time. Thank you. Coming up next, turn that plane around. Call or go online today. Call or go on line today. We have been following the trial of former Trump Campaign paul manafort, the prosecution was supposed to wrap up today but theres been this long
mysterious recess and lawyers are still not back in court. Shimon prokupecz is standing by i know they were talking with white noise machines. What is going on today in this federal courthouse . Reporter were just getting an update now. Everyone is back in court now. The judge did take the bench and the prosecution is calling its witness, its first witness for the day. Theres been a mystery surrounding this, the entire day, the judge took the bench this morning, called both parties to the bench and theyve been in this indefinite recess until just moments ago where all the sides have now back in court, the judge is taken the bench and hes told the prosecutors to call their witness. We dont know what the recess was about. We dont know what the issue was about that caused this long delay. It may have been a juror issue or something else, but certainly for this judge who likes to move things along, who has been keeping things at a pretty steady pace, to have this kind
of delay, it had to be something significant, something that concerned him but that seems to have been resolved as the trial is now back under way and its unlikely now that the prosecution will rest their case today. They had hoped to end their case and let the defense start their case, perhaps this afternoon or monday now. Okay. Stay close. Let us know when you have more, thank you so much. Sure. Lets move on to this next one, heres a quote, turn that plane around. That is the urgent command from a federal judge who was in the middle of an asylum hearing concerning a mother and her daughter. Judge sullivan erupt when had he learned that the government had already put the two Asylum Seekers on a Plane Deporting them back to el salvador. So through his anger, this judge, even threatened to hold Attorney GeneralJeff Sessions in contempt. We only have Court Transcripts but the fury in his words leapt from the page so i want to you hear these words. Let me quote this judge for you
right now. This is what he says. He said, this is pretty outrageous. Somebody in pursuit of justice who has alleged a credible fear in her mind and is seeking justice in the United States court is just is spirited away, while her attorneys are arguing for justice for her. It is outrageous. Im also directing the government to turn that plane around either now or when it lands. Turn that plane around and bring those people back to the United States. Its outrageous. What else can i do . Im really upset about that. I really am. Im sorry to keep going back to it. When you think about it, these people are seeking justice in a United States court. The words from this judge. Alan gomez is a lawyer what did you make of what he said. My favorite part of the transcript is when the judge apologized for raising his voice as he was doing. This is clearly an incredibly
remarkable case. Weve seen a lot of President Trumps Immigration Policies in court over the past year and a half and ive been covering a lot of them and i have not heard one like this and what upset him so much is that the government had assured the judge that none of the plaintiffs in this case would be deported before thursday night. They wanted to give him time to hear the case and to make his and to make his ruling and right in the middle of the court hearing, they had taken a break and they found out these people were on the plane back to el salvador so thats what led to the eruption but more broadly speaking, this is a very important case because it deals with the ability of the u. S. Government to limit people who are applying for asylum in this country, the reason Jeff Sessions was personally named in this because it was his decision recently to forbid people claiming domestic and Gang Violence as reasons to get asylum in the United States to get asylum in the United States. So thats what this judge is hearing and thats why he was so infuriated by what happened yesterday. Let me ask you about melania
trumps parents because we know that this president has repeatedly denounced what he refers to as chain migration. Where adult u. S. Citizens can obtain residency for their own families. His mother and fatherinlaw became citizens by taking advantage that have same program. How is that not hypocritical . Its really fascinating. If you look at the white house proposals, what they sent to congress to try to get them to implement into law is removing the ability of a u. S. Citizen to sponsor their parent to come into the country and get a green card and its part of a much broader effort by the Trump Administration to limit Legal Immigration in so many ways as we saw with the asylum case, were trying to limit it there, as were seeing with their attempts to limit family based migration which they referred to as chain migration. It just shows how many different ways theyre trying to limit Legal Immigration even though the president ran a campaign
against ilLegal Immigration. Alan gomez, thank you. Thank you. Coming up next is diplomacy with north korea beginning to unravel . North korea now calling the latest u. S. Michelle, to you on north korea, we know that north korea continues to reject any and all Denuclearization Proposals from the u. S. , so what is it that kim wants . So were learning from diplomat sources, high ranking sources that the u. S. Has now made multiple, repeated, very specific proposals to north korea to get started and then continue on the road to complete denuclearization. So this includes things like a time frame for doing so, how exactly this would happen. These are proposals that are, at least to some degree, spelled out for how this can actually happen. All of these were told have been rejected thus far by north korea, which considers them to be, quote, gangsterlike. We know the u. S. Is looking for a big gesture on the part of north korea, for it to give up a significant part of its Nuclear Arsenal within the shortterm. Kim jongun, though, is not prepared to make any move. Hes insisting that the u. S. First take a bigger step that would likely have to be Something Like a Peace Agreement for the Korean Peninsula and until that happens were told by these source thats hes not planning on doing anything. This comes at a time when each side has been criticizing the other for not doing enough and for doing the wrong thing, so this looks like its going to continue to be stalled unless somebody makes one of these big gestures or theres some compromise, brooke. Okay. So stalled there for now. What about turkey, a significant move by President Trump today involving turkey. He has now doubled steel and aluminum tariffs saying that the relations between the two nato nations are, quote, not good. Why is he doing this . Well, brooke, theres been a lot of dissatisfaction with turkey over the years but this is really centered on pastor
Andrew Brunson. You remember a couple of weeks ago there was this kind of deal that the u. S. Would release someone in turkish custody and then as well as someone in israel had a turkish citizen in their custody in exchange, Andrew Brunson would come home. He was released from prison but not released from house arrest and allowed to come back home. President trump thought that that was reneeging on the deal he had with president erdogan. Mike pompeo has been working with the Foreign Minister and other officials. This is not been working. You saw last week that the u. S. Put sanctions on the Justice Minister and i think in some ways President Trump really feels that his will is being tested, which is why hes launching all of these actions, but you would think usually the State Department and the pentagon says that this is a very difficult thing for the relationship. You dont hear that, brooke, right now and that is because
theres not a lot of sympathy for turkey. Its actions over the last year or so since the attempted coup on president erdogan, hes moving toward being an authoritarian leader and theyre still in jail, brooke. Thank you. Next, this. Charlottesville rally was supposed to be about a confederate monument, but anyone who was paying attention could see that it was about more than a single statue. It felt like a National Reckoning around race was coming. And being here would help me understand it. My next guest, the voice you just heard there, the correspondent behind this powerful front line documentary reflects back on charlottesville now one year later. Charlottesville, virginia, august 12th, 2017. Id been tracking hate crimes since the 2016 president ial election and i can see that something was happening in this country. The Charlottesville Rally was supposed to be about a confederate monument, but anyone who was paying attention could see that it was about more than a single statue. It felt like a National Reckoning around race was
coming. And being here would help me understand it. One of the producers of the film, a. C. , thank you for coming on with me. Thanks for having me on. So, whats interesting to me in reading so much about your film is that you really dig deep on some of these members in some of these violent white power gangs so i want you to tell me about these two men, one of whom you traced to the military, another as a Defense Contractor. Who are they . What did you learn about them . So the first guy and at the time when we started doing our reporting on him, he was a Lance Corporal in the u. S. Marine corps. During the charlottesville rallies he was in the marine corps. And he was carrying around a big wooden stick with a basically a nazi flag on it
and beating people with it and posting pictures of himself in private chats attacking people with it. We obtained video and photos. We obtained a whole range of evidence showing that he was engaged in these violent altercations in charlottesville. What was more disturbing about him, though, even than the violence on that day was that he was a member at the time of a white power neonazi terror group called the Adam Waf Decision thats link today five murders, a bomb plot and specifically wants to overthrow the u. S. Government through force of arms. Youve got a guy in the marines getting Military Training has access to weapons and is simultaneously involved with the group thats trying to over throw the government and start a race war. The other guy we profiled was a guy michael miselus. He was a member of the group called the rise above movement,
a new generation white power, White Supremacist Group out of california. He also had a government issued Security Clearance to work. The Defense Contractor on next generation aviation technology. Wow. So these are the kinds of people who rolled up in this Quaint College Town in charlottesville a year ago and, you know i watched what you said. You were stunned because police were not prepared and after the fact they did this whole mega, you know, internal investigation and issued this huge report essentially confirming what you saw and im wondering, looking ahead, a. C. , are police prepared for this level of protest in this country today . Theres a couple things. The first thing is that most cities have gotten a lot better about policing these events since charlottesville because none of them want to be the next charlottesville in the runup to
charlottesville, a lot of them were really not very good at this. You had three people stabbed. Seven people stabbe at a nazi event in sacramento. Dozens of people hurt in berkeley, california, then you had charlottesville. Now, the police have gotten a lot better across the country of policing these kinds of events. The second thing is this, i think this weekend is going to be low turnout. I think probably the white nationalists, White Supremacists are not even going to be in d. C. I think theres a strong chance theyll show up some where else and that d. C. Is a bait and switch. So i think were not going to see the kind of scenes we saw last year in charlottesville. Good. Good. A. C. Thompson, thank you so much and well be watching your film on the frontline, thank you. Coming up next, the situation getting even more tense in kansas. Look at all these numbers. Just 116 votes separating these two candidates in the race. A Voting Discrepancy has already been detected now the democratic is telling his republican rival to stop giving advice to election officials. What is going on there . [burke] at farmers, weve seen almost everything
governor jeff colyer. As Secretary Of State, kobach oversees elections. Hell be formally answering his requests tomorrow, but ill give you a heads up, yes, well be ill be and to recuse myself. As i say, it really doesnt make any difference. My office doesnt count the votes. The counties do. Kobachs lead over governor colyer is razor thin right now. It just shrunk as of lunchtime. After miscounts in two counties, kobach is leading by just 116 votes. With me now, from the state capital, topeka, is brian casey, he is the director of elections and he is assistant Secretary Of State so he works under kris kobach. Brian, thanks so much. Thank you very much, brooke. The last name is caskey. Caskey. Thank you for correcting me. Brian, let me first get your reaction to secretary Kobach Recusing himself from the
governors race count. Well, i saw the news report last night. Ive not personally talked to the secretary since then. I keep anticipating there will be a formal release sometime today. But as of this time, i have not heard one. But the gist of what he said is correct. Yes, he is the Secretary Of State but he is not involved in the daytoday operations of managing the Election Results or of conducting the possible recount. As the director of elections, it is my job to oversee the daytoday operations and we work extensively with 105 county Election Offices throughout the state. Hes also correct that in the event of a recount and to this point in time, this office never touches a ballot. Each of our counties are exclusively responsible for counting the votes in their local offices. They report the results to the secretary of States Office, but we are not directly involved in handling any ballots at any point in time. Okay. Let me get you to respond to this. Cnn has learned there arecrepai
two counties. Wyandot county and haskel county. The county sites showed slightly different results than the Secretary Of States correspo corresponding results. Can you explain the discrepanc discrepancies . Yes, i can. Theres actually a couple more counties than that as well that i can confirm. So the process is on Election Night, the polls close and then we receive results from all 105 counties. They transmit them to us and we input them into our system that then displays results on Election Night. At the end of that process, when we receive the last report, which in this case was about 8 00 a. M. On wednesday, then we validate with every county this is the number that we have, please verify that. During the course of that validation, each of these counties verify that the number we have was incorrect. For a variety of reasons. And one case, our office made a in another case, the county uploaded a precinct results more
than one time. These mistakes are mistakes, but its one reason why we emphasize so much that Election Nights are unofficial. We need time to proofread and validate things, and so each of these mistakes was caught during our validation check the next day. So then given those multiple counties, then, what do you have as the vote tally difference between these two men . When i came over here to do the interview, the vote total difference was about 217. 2 17. I want to talk a little about that. Our office today basically is collecting Election Results from all 105 counties, again, to account for any discrepancy between Election Night and now and also because kansas has a law where you can mail your ballot with a postmark or other identification from the post office. It was if it was transmitted on or before election day, it can be received wednesday, thursday, or today. These are legally cast ballots. So our office is collecting those results and posting them
on our website today to provide the public an additional look at our unofficial results. Okay. So, unofficially 217 as of this moment. What about this, bryan . We know that Colyer Campaign spokesman kendall marr told the Kansas City Star this. We have received countless reports that voters experienced issues when they voted on tuesday. Many colyer voters had difficulties finding his name on the ballot. Were forced to vote on provisional ballots or were turned away outright for unknown reasons. Have you received reports on this, can you explain that . On any election day, i receive reports of any problems across the state. So, yes, ive received some of these. I have not had any conversation with any representative of the Governors Office at this time. I hope that they share that information with us so we can look. But i cant address some of those, and in a Press Conference prior to election day, the secretary of States Office alerted voters to the fact that
