The latest news from around the world with host Brooke Baldwin. The latest news from around the world with host Brooke Baldwin. As a result of illegal immigration, and they fought it hard. And the Prime Minister, frankly, is with us today because of illegal immigration. Italy got tired of it. They didnt want it any longer. The people of italy have borne a great part of the burden for europe through the course of the migration crisis. I applaud the Prime Minister for his bold leadership, truly bold, and i hope more leaders will follow this example, including leaders in europe. The Prime Minister and i are united in our conviction that strong nations must have strong borders. We have a solemn obligation to protect our citizens and their quality of life. My administration is working hard to pass Border Security legislation, improve vetting, and establish a meritbased Immigration System which the United States needs very, very
mission in afghanistan. The Prime Minister and i agree that the brutal regime in iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon. Never. We encourage all nations to pressure iran to end the full range of its malign activities. The United States welcomes the partnership of italy in these vital efforts. Today, we are also addressing the crucial issue of trade and commerce. We are working closely with our european partners, including italy, to ensure fair and reciprocal trade. A few days ago, i met with president juncker of the European Commission. We had a great meeting. Following that meeting we announced a Breakthrough Agreement to remove Trade Barriers and increase United States exports of agriculture, energy, and other goods and
services to the European Union. Now is also the perfect time to expand commerce between the United States and italy. Americas booming economy is setting records in so many categories. It creates enormous opportunities for investment. Likewise, i recommend investment in italy. It is a great place with great people. I look forward to working closely with the Prime Minister to open up new commercial opportunities that will reduce our Trade Deficit substantially and increase our mutual prosperity. Mr. Prime minister, we discussed our shared goal of combatting unfair Foreign Trade practices from nonmarket economies. They are brutal. But we are winning. These abuses including subsidies, excess capacity, intellectual property theft, forced technology transfer,
currency devaluation and distortion, caused by stateowned enterprises. In this area, like so many others, cooperation between italy and the United States can make a tremendous difference not only for our countries, but all over the world. And its making a big difference. And we are making a big difference. Tremendous difference. On trade and on fairness. But we also have to be fair to the people of the United States and the taxpayers of the United States. Mr. Prime minister, thank you again for joining me for these important discussions. We are both outsiders to politics. Can you believe it . We are outsiders to politics. I look at all of these wonderful politicians. And we are both determined to protect the rights and needs and interests and dreams of our citizens. And we will do that. I look forward to partner with you to grow the beautiful friendship between our countries
in the effort of creating a Brighter Future for both the people of italy and the people of the United States. With that, i just want to again thank you again very much for coming to the white house. It is my great honor. Thank you. Good afternoon. I wish to thank you, President Trump, for this kind invitation, for this warm hospitality, only two months after the formation of my government. I take it as a sign of the special attention to italy and to me as well. Forgive me but i dont want to renounce the privilege for speaking in my wonderful language now. Translator before all i would like to remember to
brings us even closer, the United States and italy, my government, and the Trump Administration are both governments that represent chain. They were chosen by citizens in order to change the status quo and to improve their life conditions. There are so many thing that bring us to the, that unify us in italy as in the United States. We are doing what we had promised during our electoral campaign, and we are working in order to give answers to the expectations of our citizens so that we wont disappoint them. And we dont betray our mandate. In italy n the United States, we are proving that change is possible. Donald and i have concentrated on a number of topics, and we both have agreed upon and reached the following results, which in part were already
mentioned. Today we will have made a great step ahead. We will start working in italy it is a directorship booth, as it were n the mediterranean between italy and the United States. I would say we are almost twin countries in which italy is becoming a Reference Point in europe and a interlock you for for the United States for the main threats and challenges that we have before us. Terrorism, all of the crises we see in the mediterranean, in particular in regard to libya. Secondly, the American Administration also recognizes that italy as a Leadership Role as a Promoter Country that will lead to the stabilization of libya. And of course this was a Great Respect for the libyan
population. With the United States we will be working in order the reach these results and we will decide what needs to be done in view of this result. I am truly thankful to you, donald, for your support. Thirdly, in terms of immigration, i also described to President Trump the innovative approach that italy has put forth and the European Union now has a responsibility to not leave the weight of the management of immigration on the shoulders of the countries of sirs arrival, like italy is. And as you heard President Trump say we appreciate this contribution which has been provided by the Italian Government which is providing good results. We are talking about a multilevel approach in order to try to resolve the phenomenon of immigration not because of an emergency, but because this is a structural approach. I want to underline this is in line with the position of President Trump, which goes from the respect and dignity of people to make sure that fundamental rights are protected. And it wants to make sure that these rights are trampled over because these people are in the hand of criminal bath. I also want to underline that the world day for the exchange of human beings is going to be celebrated. I also told President Trump that i am very satisfied for the understanding that was reached very recently between ourselves and the president of the European Commission juncker. I believe this understanding is fundamental and we have to work upon it immediately, bringing our efforts together to make sure that european, american, italian citizens receive the benefits of a more equitable
trade relationship which is completely completely reciprocal. Italy is open to a relationship with russia but italy also knows that the dialogue between the United States and russia is fundamental so that we can have positive results in a more global perspective for stability and security purposes. In terms of energy security, President Trump and i also found ourselves in agreement with the need to make sure that there is a greater diversification for the sources of energy and to make sure that the energy roots are diversified as well. Finally, i personally am sure that we can increase and improve
with the made to at all levels. In in particular in the space and Aerospace Fields we already have a Great Partnership between the Italian Space agency and nasa. So we hope that aerospace will bring together american technology, Italian Technology so that we can launch new aircraft that cross the atmosphere and will be able to bring the United States and italy together in an hour and a half. This is a project i would like to speak in deal with the American Administration. I thank you for your attention. Daily caller. Thank you, mr. President. To follow up on what you were saying about the shut down. Are you saying that you would be
willing to shut the doft down in september if it does not fully fund 25 billion worth of your border wall and also deliver all of the Immigration Priorities that you litsed in your tweet . Or leaving some room for negotiation there . I i will always leave room for negotiation but this has been many years. This isnt just Trump Administration. We are new. There has been many years, even decades. We have immigration laws. We have Border Security. We have all sorts of things going on that are its disgraceful. We are doing a phenomenal job. We we are setting records but we have laws that dont work. We are working around those laws. Its unfortunate. I have to take my hat off to the border patrols, Law Enforcement, the i. C. E. Which really has been maligned by the democrats, the job they do. They go into these ms13 nests, nests of bad, bad people, killers in many cases, and they go in there fearless and they do an incredible job and they get them out. They either go to jail or they
get out of the country. So i want to take my hat off the i. C. E. And the brave people that have really been pa lined by the democrats. We need Border Security. Without a border, as this gentleman can tell you also, because the Prime Minister really was a very big factor in his win, and other peoples win in italy. It was a big factor in my win. We need Border Security. Border security includes the you will with a it includes many other thing. We have to end the lottery. We have to end the chain. The chain is like a disaster. You bring one person n you end up with 32 people. We have to end these horrible Catch And Release principles where you catch somebody, you take their name, and you release them. You dont even know who they are. And then they are supposed to come back to a court case where they want us to hire thousands of judges. The whole thing is ridiculous. And we have to change our laws. We do that through congress. I would certainly be willing to close it down to debt it done. As you know, we are already approving things in various businesses including we are going to be taking care of the military. We always put the military and Law Enforcement very high. But i would be certainly willing to consider a shutdown if we dont get proper border shurt. Thank you. Sir just to follow up on that quickly, is the 25 billion a red line for you . I have no red line, unlike President Obama. I just want great Border Security. Mr. Prime minister, here in the United States, among our Commentary Yacht there was the consensus that the president s appearance at the g7 and nato damaged our relationship with those institutions. As a member of both of those institutions, what is your assessment of the president s appearance at both . Translator both at the g7 and nato we had a very Fruitful Exchange of views and opinions and oppositions. I think that all the positions and stances which are expressed with clarity and provide a contribution also to review well established positions are more than welcome. There is a Fruitful Exchange. We had a truthful he can change both at the g7 summit and nato summit in different frameworks. We for instance, in the framework of g7 summit, we agreed on the need for reforming the wto, the system of the wto. It is ayearold system which consider china as an emerging country. You can understand that applying those same rules after years
with the privileges granted to an emerging country clearly means having a system which is not well functions and its not well rational. And nato, there was a clear stance taken by President Trump which i personally share. Fairly, he expressed a position and the need to rebalance the expenditure which is born out of from addition by the United States which is very disproportionate. These are absolutely reasonable positions and stances, and i personal take them into great account. And i will be personally the carrier of the message and i will try to make the others understand his position as well. We must negotiate with the United States to find balance in interest of italian cities, american citizens, and european citizens. Also, i would add to that i want to thank you for what you just said. It has been unfair to the United States. We had a very good g7 meeting. Thats where gee seppi and i game friends. I think we were more close low aligned then everyone else in the. Radio. But it was a great meeting in every respect. I would say it was very good. Nato in particular. I went to nato. It was essentially going out of business because people werent paying. It was going down and down and down. You have to look at the line. I came along last year and in a fairly nice tone i said you have got to pay. And they paid 44 billion more. And this year i said it in a little bit stronger tone. And they are paying hundreds of billions of dollars more over the years. And nato will be strong again. And if you speak to secretary general stoltenberg, i think hes the biggest fan of trump because he said, we couldnt collect money until President Trump came along. And he said last year we collected 44 billion, and this year, the money is pouring in. But its like the Prime Minister said. We really talk about imbalance. We were treated very unfairly. The United States was treated very, very unfairly. Because we are shouldering anywhere from 70 to 90 of the costs of to. Thats not fair. Its not fair. Especially when you take germany. They are paying a little more than 1 and they are buying and paying tremendous amounts of money to russia. So we are supposed to protect countries from russia, but they are paying russia billions and billions of dollars for the energy. Not good. Not a good situation. And i let it be known. So the bottom line is the nato countries are now paying a lot more money. And nato has become a lot stronger because of it. And i appreciate your answer. Thank you. Please. Translator sorry donald. May i add something . I am saying as a person who has
a great huge experience as a lawyer, you have a president who is a strong supporter and advocate of the interests of the American People and the american country. He is a great negotiator. And im told there is a reporter who wants to ask a question. Despite its terrific potential the Italian Economy underperforms regularly. Given your stellar success in the u. S. Economy, what do you think would reignite the Italian Economy . Is what role do you think the eu should play in it . President conte, do you think President Trumps formula would work in italy as well . I can answer the biggest thing italy needs is great leadership. They have it right now. I ly honestly believe the Prime Minister is going to do a tremendous job on Economic Development in addition to
borders. You know, for Economic Development you need borders also. But you have a man thats going to do a terrific job. I have no doubt about it at all. He knows how to sell. He knows how to promote really a great product because they make among the greatest products. I wont mention their names, but they are great. I have some of them. And italy makes a great product. I think its going to do very well economically. And we are there to help. We have had record numbers. I have been here for a little more than a year and a half, and we have had record numbers. We have had numbers that nobody believed possible, especially if you look at one particular fact that was not reported very much. Trade deficit. 52 billion reduction in the Trade Deficit for the quarter. And i think probably Steve Mnuchin treasury is here and mike pompeo. Nobody would have thought that would be possible so quickly. 52 billion reduction in the trade definite sit for the
quarter. I think that italy is going to be able to do the same thing. Slightly different numbers but the same thin. What role should the European Union play in the matter, sir . You are asking me what . What role do you think the European Union should play . Thats up to them. I dont want to get involved in that. European union jean claud and i had a terrific meeting last week. We were having a hard time. Then i i think inned tariffs on cars and we got along very well. Very well. I think they are going to treat us fairly. We are going to treat them fairly. As you know it is been a one way street. The European Union has totally taken advantage of the United States. We cant let that happen. Not fair to the United States. By the way, italy has a 31 billion surplus with the United States. Meaning we have a 31 billion Trade Deficit with italy. And we discussed that. And we will work something out. We are going to work something out. Okay . Thank you. Translator as far as i am concerned im very envious, very envious of the records and the Growth Figures of the american economy. We discussed that before with donald. Somehow these are systems which cannot be compared because their magnitudes orders of magnitude are very different. At the same time im envious but ambitious at the same time as the Government Leader im ambitious for my economy to do a lot, much more than what was done in the past. We are preparing a series of Structural Reforms which we will be submitting to the attention of our european partners, too. I do not want the tax reform to be set aside. It was leverage in this country for economic growth. Is well constructed. It represents a leverage for economic growth. Working on streamlining and simplifying red tape and administration regulation. So we are trying to eliminate krop corruption pockets. We are trying to speed up the civil trials, the proceedings so all sectors together with the Citizenship Income which will support those people who lose their job to find a new one. These are all the reforms that we consider to be a positive element to represent an economic leverage for our country which can then try and reach the growth. I do think this. One of the Bigst Thingest thing we have done obviously, the massive tax cuts. But maybe equal to would be the tremendous cuts in regulation. I know italy well. They have a lot of regulation. And i have no doubt that the Prime Minister will be working very hard on that. But i think i can say from our
standpoint one of the most important thing we did was cutting massively these horrible regulations. I believe so strongly in the i video. I want the cleanest air, the cleanest water, the cleanest everything, the best everything. But you had ten regulations on every point. It would take ten years for a highway or a road to be approved. We have that down to two years. It will hopefully get down to one. And it may get rejected. But at least its going to go quickly. We want regulation, but it has to be cut to a minimum and do the trick. And i think that italy will follow suit. I know they have looked at it very strongly and they are going to follow suit. Okay. Thank you. Thank you very much. Roberta rampton of reuters please. Roberta . Thank you mr. President. You spoke a bit about iran today, and your discussions. Im wondering if you could tell
us what you think iran needs to do to reduce some of the tensions. You have met with the leaders of north korea and russia. Are you prepared also will you willing to meet with the president of iran and under what conditions . Which there been preliminary discussions about any of that . I will meet with anybody. Ib in meeting. The Prime Minister said it better than anybody can say it. Speaking to other people, especially when you are talking about potentials of war and death, and famine and lots of other things, you meet. There is nothing wrong with meeting. We met, as you know, with chairman kim. And you havent had a missile fired off in nine months. We got our prisoners back. So many things have happened, so positive. But meeting with people i had a great meeting, in my opinion of course the fake news didnt cover it that way but i had a great meeting with president pooutd of russia. I think it was a great meeting in terms of the future, in terms of safety, and economic
development and protecting israel and protecting everybody. I thought it was a great meeting. Great meeting with nato. I just sbland that hundreds of billions more money will be paid into the coughers of nato. And much already has. I believe in meeting. I would certainly meet with iran if they wanted to meet. I dont know that they are ready yet. They are having a hard time right now. But i ended the iran deal. It was a ridiculous deal. I believe they will wind up wanting to meet. Im ready to meet any time they want. To i dont do that from strength or from weakness. I think it is an appropriate thing to do. If we could work something out thats meaningful, not the waste of paper that the other deal was, i would certainly be willing to meet. Do you have presns conditions for that meeting . No preconditions. No. They want to meet, ill meet. Any time they want. Any time they want. Good for the country. Good for them. Good for us. And good for the world. No preconditions. If they want to meet, ill meet. Prime minister, i wanted to ask if you and the president you talked about the need to stabilize libya. I wanted to ask if you and the president discussed working to the on Energy Production in libya in some way . Did you discuss Oil Production in libya . Do you see a way for the United States to become involved there . Perhaps with italys help . Translator we discussed the problem of stabilizing libya and obviously of the security to be guaranteed for the whole of the iranian area. You see, its not only a problem of the Migration Routes. Many of the Migration Routes from african countries concentrate in the libyan area. But its also a problem of
security in general because for instance through the Migration Routes foreign fighters might reach european territory, agents who could carry the terrorist threat. We didnt discuss in details the problems. Certainly, it is our intention to respect the libyan population. We are not driven by economic interests. We are not driven by the problem of Energy Supply. Our interest, and from this Point Of View i can announce, i have already said we are going to organ agreement with President Trump im going to organize a conference on libya. We would like to deal and discuss all of the issues related to the libyan people involving all of the stakeholders, actors, protagonists in the whole of the mediterranean. We are going to discuss economic
aspects but also social aspects, the protection of civil rights, the problem of constitutional process, of issuing and passing laws so to enable libya in particular to get to democratic elections in a condition of the utmost stability. Im told that a reporter wants to ask a question. Translator thank you, i have a question to Prime Minister conte and a question for President Trump. There are three pending issues on the table with American Administration. One of them is sanctions to russia. Since italy, the two main Government Parties in italy said they want to lift the sanctions on russia. Whats the official position by the government . It seems the american addition is asking for the sanctions to be kept . The other two parts are the taip gas pipeline. The American Department asked to continue with the work while there are some ambiguous positions in italy related to this project. And the f35 program. What is italy going to do . Will italy confirm the program . Thank you. Translator im going to answer in relations to sanctions on russia. Im going to repeat what i said before because i have already taken a stance in all of the international summits. I am going to be boring but this confirm has the position of the Italian Government is not changing in this respect. We are open to dialogue with russia. We do believe that russia plays a fundamental role in all International Geopolitical crisis. So thinking that russia can be kept out of a dialogue, as
President Trump said, if we want to solve problems, we cannot choose the counterpart to deal with. We must accept and sit at the table and negotiate and have dialogue with those who are in reality our counterrt pachlt as far as the Sanction System specifically is concerned im well aware that the system stymied from the Minks Agreement has the outcome and is connected to the implement of the Minks Agreements. So it is clear that it is unthinkable today to lift overnight those sanctions. However, exactly because we are open to dialogue with russia, the position of my government has been stated straightaway is to make sure that the system of sanctions doesnt affect the civic society, doesnt affect the economy of the small and Medium Sized Enterprises in
russia. Italy, from this Point Of View has a tradition of intense economic relations with russia in this respect. So in order to stress once again with a final statement, sanctions against russia are not and cannot represent an end. Second issue, transadegree yachtic pipeline. I discussed this with President Trump. And i and i reported to him that my government is well aware of the fact this is strategic work in terms of Energy Supply to italy and to the south of europe and the mediterranean area. We are perfectly aware of the fact that this can provide a contribution also in the renewal of the Energy System and the elimination of coal, custom is part of our program. At the same time, i correctly informed President Trump that
there are some uncertainties by local communities, the communities where the pipeline will land. Since problems must be faced directly and not trying to avoid them, once back to italy, as soon as possible, i will discuss the issue with the mayors and i will discuss about the local mayors, the local community to try to find a solution which will take into conceaccount the concerns of the local communities. As for the third issue. Gno was signed in 2002. So it is a big period of time in terms of talking about need for defense and security as a government. We are responsibly evaluating
this on file. As you know, it is already a process of orders being issued which is taking place. And these orders are issued much earlier because the work is very complex. So it will continue to follow this file and we will make all the necessary choices in a very cautious way in view needs of defense and security being fully transparent with our partner, the Trump Administration. Thank you very much. Sanctions on russia will remain as is. As far as a pipeline is concerned, i would like to see a competing pipeline. Mr. Prime minister, i hope you are going to be able to do that competing pipeline. And we are already talk to the European Union about building nine to 11 ports which they will pay for so that we can ship our lng over to various parts of europe. And that will be more
competition. But the sanctions on russia will remain as is. Okay. Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you. Thank you. Do you feel betrayed by Michael Cohen, sir . Mr. President , do you feel betroyed by Michael Cohen, sir . Lfrltd you heard a couple of all right, you heard a couple of shouted questions at the end there. No other questions involving the president s former lawyer, Michael Cohen or Robert Mueller, the Special Counsel for that matter at this News Conference. But there were two major headlines emerging. The president of the United States saying he would have no problem doing a federal Government Shutdown if he doesnt get what he wants on Border Security, including a wall. And at the same time, he says he is willing to meet, without any preconditions with the iranian leadership, president rouhani. No preconditions, willing to meet with them any time they want. A significant Statement Given the fact that the State Department Regards iran as the worlds leading State Sponsor of terrorism. There is a lot to discuss. Lets go through with our experts. First lets talk about the president s threat, Gloria Borger when he says i would have no problem doing a shutdown. He says we are the laughing stock of the world when it comes to immigration. He made that very clear. What he didnt tell us, wolf, was the date of the shutdown. Would it be before the midterm elections in september . Or which people in congress do not want and have been reminding him, you know, we have a Supreme Court justice we need to confirm. We are trying to save control of the house. We would rather not shut down the government. Or would he wait until after the midterm elections . We dont know the answer to that. What i think we did hear though is that he said he is always willing to negotiate. This was not somebody who was holding a hard and fast line. To my ears, it sound like hes not intent on shutting down the government. Thats not a desired Policy Outcome for him. That i think is pretty clear. What he is going to do is be a thorn in the side of Republican Leaders from now until the Government Funding Bill is done where he is going to hang out and dangle this desire to get more funding for his wall. But i think he is keenly aware of the political ramifications of stepping on cavanaugh, of complicated the life of many vulnerable House Republicans but he wants to keep this notion of the Government Shutdown in the ether which is going to kmikt things for paul ryan. He didnt stick to 25 billion when he was asked about it. He didnt speak to that. And he didnt speak to the date. I could come after the midterm. So far there has been pushback to the threat to shut down the
government from his allies on capitol hill. Leaders in the house and the senate dont want a shutdown before the midterm elections in november. They want it avenue. Jeff zeleny, our white house correspond end is in the east room. Give us your take on what we just heard. The iran meeting without preconditions as you have been discussing is a major headline as well as the Government Shutdown. I think another headline is what was not asked here at this News Conference. Clearly on president s mind through his own towards and his tweets over the weekend he is indeed consumed at least in part by the Special Counsels investigate. Those questions were not asked. We tried to ask the question at the end of the News Conference if he does feel betrayed by Michael Cohen his long time lawyer confidante and protector. He turned briefly but did not answer the questions. The limitation of questions, two on each side is a way to protect
the white house from the sort of questions that we call news of day, the biggest headlines that may be out there. Of course there are so many questions to ask the president. But it is true, kofl, i can tell that you white house aide were asking some reporters here today what they planned to ask the president. Now, this is not necessarily untypical. You probably remember this as well from when you covered the white house for so many years. Administrations do Ask Reporters what they plan to ask. Most reporters i know do not answer that question besides of news of day. I always say, you know, whatever the president has spoken about, may be tweeting about, those are fair game for questions. We did not tell the white house what we planned to ask today and of course we were not called on here. Wolf it isser cloo, i think one of the headlines here at this Press Conference is the fact that some of the biggest controversies and Clouds Ng Thatting over this administration were not asked today about the two u. S. Journalists who were called on by the white house. Im sure the president is
relieved, sighing a little bit a breath of relief over the fact that the two american journalists who asked questions one asked about a Government Shutdown, a an important issue. Very important. And the other asked about iran, talks with iran which also a very important issue. As you correctly pointed out the president was not asked about a third very important issue, the investigation, the Robert Mueller investigation, his personal attacks on the Special Counsel, which escalated in recent days and what his supporters believe a befrayal by Michael Cohen, his former lawyer and fixer. Jim sciutto is with us. When the president of the United States says i am certainly willing to meet with the iranian leadership if they want to meet any time they want to meet, no preconditions hes open to that even though the u. S. Government regard the iranian government as the worlds leading State Sponsor of terror. Lets remind folks what the president said about the iranian leader one week ago. I believe eight days ago. He said to iranian president
rouhani never ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history ever suffered before. That tweet in all caps from the rest. That was eight days ago. Now he is saying he is willing to meet with iranian leaders presumably among them the iranian president with no preconditions. That is a remarkable turn, if it is a turn. We have experience with donald trump playing both sides before going tough as he did with kim jongun before and then being able to sit down and negotiate with him. It is the second time i have heard the president bring up the idea of negotiating again with iran in the last ten days. He of course panned the nuclear deal that the Obama Administration negotiated. But he has now put out there twice, listen, that doesnt mean that i wont make any deal with iran. Seems to be saying if i can make a better deal, as the president an claimed he can or would be
willing to do, he will sit down and negotiate. If there was going to be some sitdown like this set up, we would not have the middle country like we did with the North Korea Summit in south korea helping to facilitate that a lot more than the president s tweets about fire and fury did. Pompeo and bolton have had public and open views about what they think about the leadership in iran. It raises the question how they would feel about how they would set that meeting up especially if there are no preconditions. Or your your preen allies who negotiated this deal with iran. The french president , the british Prime Minister who lobbied the president to stay in this deal. This is best way forward. He said no, it is a horrible deal, worst deal ever made in history and pulled out. What are they thinking after all of that lobbying, wait, you are willing to talk and negotiate a different deal . A little bit of whiplash. The president also said in connection with meeting with the iranians he said it was a great meeting with kim jongun. He also said despite what the news media suggested it was a great meeting with Putin In Helsinki as well. We dont know the details of that meeting. That was a private meeting. But you remember when President Obama suggested at one point he was willing to meet from anyone the reaction he got from republicans. And democrats. Both sides. This is when he was then senator obama, a candidate for president n a cnn debate in july of 2007. And he said he was willing to meet without preconditions for a bunch of Rogue Leaders from a bunch of nations at the time. Hillary clinton hammered away for days, obviously unsuccessfully at obama about this as did many republicans and
yes he slams the iran deal but is adopting that he would sit down with any leaders. And can i comment on what he just said out there. Russia sanctions will remain on russia. Tucked it in at the en, sanctions will remain. I think he was referring back to helsinki. The fact that we dont know what occurred. I think that the difficult time that pompeo and the Senate ForeignRelations Committee had the other day. The president threw it in there. You could read that two ways. Is sanctions will remain as is there is nothing gob to no change but there is an enormous a. Pressure coming from capitol hill right now to increase the sanctions against russia right. You could read it both ways. When he used the word as is,
jim sciutto it says the me he is not enthusiastic aftere what he called his great meeting with putin to see the u. S. Intensify sanctions against russia. Just those six words are all he uttered on it. I have to say i took it as him saying following the criticism on helsinki im sticking with the sanctions i am not pulling them back. But i think its worth following up with the white house whether he has a stated position now on current bipartisan efforts by congress to push new sanctions on russia. What he was not asked about there is Michael Cohen and Special CounselRobert Mueller custom is something that truly consumed him in recent days. He ramped up his attacks from not uttering Robert Muellers name before march to now he mentioned it multiple times in one day, one time period alleging he has conflicts of interests but declining to say
what exactly they were. Also the question that Rudy Giuliani couldnt antithis morning on cnn when he was asked what exactly the conflicts of interest that he believes the Special Counsel has are. Clearly, a subject the president is trying to avoid questions on. Last week he was not pleased when i and several other reporters asked about that during the meeting in the oval office, especially about Michael Cohen. This attorney and long time fixer and friend of the president that is now alleging he knew about that meeting between donald trump jr. And the russians before it occurred and after, which is not what the president , not what his aides have said. They said he learned in july of 2017, a year after it occurred. The president wasnt asked about that there even though he did push back on it on twitter this weed and we did see him really ramp up his attack on the Special Counsel. Isz also ramping up his attack on the news media. He is an extraordinary exchange
the editor of the New York Times. They washed him in a private Off The Record meeting custom the president later broke the rules and tweeted about it. In a private Off The Record meeting they said to him dont talk about the news media being the enemy of the American People. It has dangerous, dangerous ramifications. Right. So you have the publisher of the New York Times pleading with the president that there is potential Violence Associated when he is out there referring to the press as the enemy of the people. What does he do today . He didnt use those words but he went back to the Fake News Media trip that he uses. Objectsly those concerns though pleas from soelzberger clearly fell on deaf ears. And it is a serious problem. It is a serious problem. And i think its all part of the same sort of russia story. You know, the president is feeling attacked. Hes clearly worried about whats going to happen next. He feels that the stories that cnn and other news organizations
are doing or fake or wrong or it make him nervous or whatever else he wants to say and the context of all of this is that his lawyers are trying to talk to mooler and they are not getting any response, which makes them nervous. Rudy giuliani told dana bash today i think we at least deserve a response. We were reporting last week that they made proposals to mueller and he is not responding to them. Does that mean the president is about to get a subpoena . Does it mean mueller is about to wrap up the investigation . I think trip is spinning about this. I think its clearly. Its making him a little nervous and i think thats why we are seeing all of this, this outrage thats even beyond what he normally says about the media, about the russia investigation and about mueller personally and and the house is saying they are under the impression that investigation will come to an end early next year. Thats exactly the reason they cited when they delayed the invitation for the russian
president to visit. They said they are going to wait until after the Special Counsels investigation to wrap up. Strong analysis. Dont go far away. Also developing right now, the president and his lawyer coming out swinging against the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller, in an effort to try to discredit the entire investigation. Why Rudy Giulianis new comments about collusion are raising lots of eyebrows and has critics saying they are moving the goal posts. Stay with us. Well be right back.
