Ann and i worked on this in many months. 16 people agreed to share their stories with cnn. Several of them said freeman made consistent comments about their bodies and clothing choices. Eight, brooke, said they were victims of harassment or inappropriate behavior. Two of those eight said they were subjected to unwanted touching by freeman. Something very telling for ann and i is that only two of the people we spoke with willing to use their names for fear of retribution from freeman. One woman, a Production Assistant on the movie going in style, said in 2016 he subjected her to unwanted touching and comments about her and another said he kept trying to lift her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear and sad this happened in front of his coactor who allegedly told him to stop. Morgan freeman responded, quote, anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows i am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy. I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable. It wasnt my intent. Thats what so alarming about our reporting. Much of whats alleged happened out in the open, on movie sets, in front of other actor and crew members. Some of it even happened when the cameras were rolling. Three individuals who attended a party claims that staffers were asked to stand in a circle, looked them up and down and and looked them up and down and they said there was a sexual component. And another said freeman walked up to her on set and said, quote, how do you feel about Sexual Harassment . When she appeared flustered, she said freeman turned and said to the rest of the staff, see, guys, this is how you do it. We spoke to a producer at wgn in chicago. She said over the course of a decade she interviewed freeman multiple times and that he always, consistently made sexual comments to her. But one time she feels really crossed a line when he asked her not to pull her skirt down as she stood up to leave the interview. Its unclear if that exchange was ever caught on tape but we do have an example of some of his behavior with her from another interview. Theres music underneath this clip but it was not added by cnn. Take a look. How are you . Better now. I dont have any magic tricks i kind of feel like i showed up for dinner without anything. I wouldnt worry about that. You got magic written all over you, child. Oh, thank you. Good medicine for a single girl. Im single, too. Are you . Yes. Are you enjoying bachelorhood . Im enjoying bachelor life immensely. I get to look at you and drool. Indeed. Brooke, the impetus for this investigation was my own experience with freeman at a junket last year for the film going in style. Right when i walked into the room, he began to make sexually suggestive comments to me. As an entertainment reporter for over a decade, it was unlike anything ive ever experienced. One of those comment was caught on tape in which he says to me, boy, do i wish i was there while looking me up and down. I was six months pregnant at the time. His costars were both there next to him, witnessed that, change. They look at him, we have that on tape and take note of freemans eyes in this clip. One time i congratulate a woman on being pregnant and she wasnt so ive never done it again. 50 years ive never done it. Youve learned your lesson. Boy, do i wish i was there. This movie is i have to explain for those that dont understand this exchange because they werent there is that there were comments that were sexual in nature made before and after this one but they werent caught on camera. We reached out to alan arkin, who could not be reached for comment and cane declined to comment on this, brooke. And these are just some of the allegations we shared. The rest of our investigation is on cnn. Com. Well take a look to read it in full, chloe and an, thank you so much. I appreciate it in your reporting. Just in to cnn, the senate has just reached a deal to overhaul the Sexual Harassment policies on capitol hill. The legislation just passed unanimously in the senate. Among the key provisions that lawmakers be held personal liable for paying out settlements rather than drawing from that big capitol hill fund. The bill heads to the house. More breaking news this afternoon, that highly anticipated meeting between President Trump and kim jong un is dead, at least for the time being. President trump torpedoing this potentially historic moment with a singlepaged letter. It reads in part, quote, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, i feel it is inappropriate at this time to have this longplanned meeting. Were told the last straw was when an official called mike pence a, quote, political dummy and threatened a nuclear showdown. But the letter appeared to keep the door open with north korea just as his comments did a while ago. Based on the recent statement of north korea, idea sided to terminate the planned summit in singapore on june 12th. While many things can happen and a great opportunity lies ahead potentially, i believe that this is a free tremendous setback for north korea and indeed a setback for the world. A lot of things can happen, including the fact that perhaps, and wed wait, its possible that the existing summit could take place or a summit at some later date. Keep in mind, all of this is happening, including our own will ripley, are deep in north korea. They just witnessed the dismantling of this Nuclear Test Site. Ripley calling in after reading the letter. Listen to this. We were just sitting kind of wrapping up the day. Its now late in the evening here. We are on the train headed back after witnessing what north korea claims is the destruction of the nuclear site. We were sitting around the table and i got the phone call and read out the letter from President Trump and i can tell you there was just a real sense of shock amongst the people i was sitting with, the north korean officials. They didnt give any official comment. They immediately got up and left, got on the phone, relaying the news up to the top. Imagine how theyre feeling after they just blew up the nuclear site today as a sign to say they were willing to denuclearize to make a point ahead of the summit that until literally minutes ago they thought was still going to happen. That was will ripley in north korea. Lets get straight to the letter and the language that President Trump uses. Chris cizzilla has reviewed this. I noted that he starts with his excellency, the chairman, the dictator. Go on. We have the full letter up here. Go to cnn and read the letter. What you have to remember, the north korea summit in some ways is donald trump versus donald trump. He loves making history. We know that. I said he would be the first to sit down with north koreas lead leader. It was a push and pull always. The letter i think reflects that divided mind. There are parts of it this read like a sort of wistful high school breakup letter in some ways. I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me. This is not typical trumpian language, but he did want this to happen. Remember, he maybe wants it potentially to happen again, that this is off but maybe not forever. Someday i look very much forward to meeting you again. This is not the fire and fury my Nuclear Button is bigger than yours that weve seen from donald trump. This is maybe circumstances will change and it could work. If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me. Now contrast that with that last this is in the first paragraph but the first i want to focus. You talk about your Nuclear Capabilities but ours are so massive and powerful that i pray to god they never have to be used. That is a real contrast to Everything Else in there, which is essentially, hey look, i want this to work out, i still want it to, youve got my number call me but dont forget my Nuclear Button is bigger than yours. You see trump wants to make history. He wanted badly to make the summit work. At the same time he wanted to be the one to say bad deal, im walking away first. Thats why it seems like two different people wrote it at times. I told my producers today, this is a total breakup letter. When your relationship starts souring and you want to cut it off but maybe we can leave it open. You hit the nail on the head. My High School Career was hear tloog ting through the gra the girl was going to break up with me and i was quickly trying to do it ahead of time. Gene lee is director at the wilson center. She opened the Pyongyang Bureau in 2012 and welcome to bruce, deputy chief of north korea. Just about the language in the letter, its apologetic and there are pleas and greatly appreciate your time and wonderful dialogue. Do you agree that doesnt sound very trumpian . Do you think this is all part of an art of the deal play leaving the door open with north korea . It certainly leaves the door open for talks and negotiations and the summit planning. The president cites the most recent statements of threaten mike pence and its most likely a response to a series of north korean statements. Perhaps one thats most important is where they articulate the north korean version of denuclearization, which is different from the u. S. Version. Im wondering on the whole political dummy quote from the North Koreans, which should have irked the administration, but what do you think happened between lets say last week with north korea and the bolton and then the pence comments, doubling down on the watch remember happened in libya with moammar gadhafi. What happened . The North Koreans are getting the sense that this summit may not go the way that they want. Part of this is that were hearing more from the National Security adviser, from the Vice President , and they are whispering in the president s ear, they are telling the president things that, frankly, wont work for the North Koreans. I do think the North Koreans were also looking for a facesaving way out of this if necessary, and i do think the white house is getting the Cold Shoulder from north korea and that President Trump wanted to walk away first and not be stood up at the altar, so to speak. Because he would have more to lose, right . It would be a global embarrassment if this summit was a disaster. Bruce, how do you think north korea will react . I air quote this, they just destroyed their Nuclear Test Site while journalists were there when all this news broke. Do you think it will be dramatic . New rocket tests . Its getting far harder to predict how things are going to happen on the korean peninsula. The ball is now in north koreas court. They can either step up their rhetoric and that your very good at using very inflammatory and colorful language or if they do want to get back to the talks, they can make some commentary of we note with disappointment your later, we were looking forward to a realignment of our relationship, as well as the security situation in the peninsula and they can be a bit flowery in their language and that might be able to get things back. But more importantly is if the u. S. Now really sees that it has very different viewpoint on denuclearization than the north, thats harder to paper over than just insults to senior u. S. Officials and a few colorful nuclear threats. And what about our al lly to the south, south korea . When this news came out that the summit was scrapped, they were blindsided. The statement from south korea reads we are trying to figure out what President Trumps intention is and the exact meaning of it. President moon was clearly caught off guard. This lack of coordination is not good. Any time you have south korea and the United States not coordinating, that gives some ammunition to north korea. Your question, i wanted to mention, though, that i think that the way that north korea will react, you know, its well past 3 in the morning there in north korea so it may be a couple hours, but lets keep in mind what you referred to earlier the detonation or explosion in the north. I think theyll show itay it a f their commitment. That will say we dont know what youre talking about. And theyll say listen, youre the one walking away, not me. Ive shown my commitment. But its a show. Indeed. That is how theyre going to spin it. That will be a signal how this whole thing may proceed. Thank you very much. The second of these two backtoback briefings based on this Conspiracy Theory that an fbi spy infiltrated the trump campaign. Top leaders in congress are talking to the top leaders in the fbi to get the low down on the confidential source. It was to vet russi investiga russian meddling. The president continues to twist the use of the source counting the use of a spy to damage his campaign without a lick of proof. And no proof was provided at a ba briefing at noon today. It initially didnt include any democrats but changes were made responding to the outcry of the appearance of bipartisanship. Lets go to capitol hill where the second meeting is happening. M manu is there. Who showed up and has there anything shown to these lawmakers . The big surprise was this guest, emmitt flood, who attended the d. O. J. Meeting at the Justice Department earlier this afternoon as well as here at the senate. The white house attorney dealing with the russia investigation in part attended at least part of both that Justice Department briefing and this larger bipartisan meeting with leaders of both parties. This was not expected going in. It was not part of the Justice Departments announcement last night about the attendees at this meeting and it certainly was not the case on tuesday when the white house spokeswoman, sha Sarah Sanders said there would be no white house official to attend the meeting. John kelly attended part of the first meeting and this meeting as well. Several of us tried to catch up with flood and john kelly on their way in. They would not comment about why flood attended this meeting. Im told he made remarks at the Justice Department briefing earlier, some very short remarks and that he left the room. Still the Senate Intelligence committee chairman, one of the seven or eight members who plan to come to this afternoon briefing was not aware in a flood was even in attendance. That was one of the Big Questions going in. We still are unclear exactly what these members are seeing, if theyre actually going to see these documents about this confidential fbi source or if theyre going to be satisfied with this at all. Devon nunes, the house Intelligence Committee chairman i dont not comment. Well see what happens when this meeting, which is about 30 minutes in, breaks up. Bring out the bold™ lets get you back to whats happening on capitol hill, the second of two backtoback briefings based on this Conspiracy Theory that an fbi spy infiltrated the trump campaign. This spy, trumps word is an fbi special informant. Jamie, first to you just on the meeting, initially no republicans were invited. Im referring to no democrats. Excuse me, no democrats were invited and all of a sudden we see adam schiff pops up right at this first meeting. Everyones wondering, whoa, what changed in the last couple of hours . Do we know . We have a sense of what happened and that is that the democrats heads were exploding and nancy pelosi came out and said how do you have one meeting for republicans and one meeting for democrats . How do we know were hearing the same thing . So the Justice Department extended an invitation to her and she sent in her place adam schiff. But the thought behind it was a serious one. You want both sides of the aisle, especially at such a partisan time, to be hearing the same thing from the Justice Department. And from the point of view of the intelligence community, they dont want to be party of what amounts to a shaping of the story. And weve seen this in so many ways during the course of this. The white house appears not to be engaged with others in a search for the truth but rather in a shaping of the story, trying to change the narrative. And that just sends all the wrong signals. On the white house, too, we knew that the democrats specifically didnt not want a member of the white house at these meetings. And we found out that this lawyer, emmitt flood, who he was apparently at the start of the d. O. J. Briefing, he represented president bill clinton during his whole impeachment process, what is the role of the white house in all of this . Im not sure we know the apes for today in this. There were two people there from the white house. First we heard that chief of staff john kelly was going. Then we heard that emmitt flood, who is a very serious hes the newest lawyer, came on in may were there. Weve heard we were there just at the top and then left. But again, theres a lot of concern about crossing lines. What is appropriate. Was it appropriate . Youre former white house counsel. Frankly i would have wanted to be at that meeting or have somebody on my staff at that meeting. I think its entirely appropriate for the person who represents the office of the president of the United States to be present at a briefing of lawmakers on this important intelligencerelated investigation. Okay. At the end of the day, though, and the second meeting is still under way, we dont know what, if anything, they will actually get their hands on, right . So thats the big question mark. Trump continues to attack intel institutions. Listen to what he has just said about james comey. I think a thing that ive done for the country, the firing of james comey, is going to go down as a very good thing. Fbi is great. I know so many people in the fbi. The fbi is a fantastic institution, but some of the people at the top were rotten apples. James comey was one of them. Sigh. Its so distressing. Okay, the fbi is great, a couple bad apples, but he also says deep state, deep state, witch hunt. The president s right that there was a conspiracy and hes right that there were spies. The conspiracy here was a russian conspiracy, not an american conspiracy. The conspiracy involved russia and it involved people spying, hopefully not americans involved in russias effort to undermine our democracy. But that is what this is about. And thats what is the huge gap between the president on the one hand and others. Russia is systematically trying to undermine not just the United States but the western alliance. He is trying to make sure i wanted to you finish that thought. We do need to pause for this medal of honor ceremony just about to get under way there at the white house. Lets watch. Let us pray. Almighty god, we come before you from different backgrounds and expirations of faith before you but we all come as americans and those who love her, those who have sacrificed and bled for her and died for her. Tonight as we gather, we have the privilege to witness, celebrate and honor an extraordinary naval career and a life that has been set apart and called to service and devotion to this nation and those in it. Today we are among the most privileged to watch as our nations highest honor is both given and received to a leader of naval warriors whose opinions were sought and we honor our very own chief and may he take with him the certainty of knowing the days given to this beloved nation were of value beyond measure. We as his fellow americans, brother and sister warriors, friends and family alike collectively ask for your blessing upon our great president , this great naval warrior, these great military families and all they do, have done and will continue to do from this day forward on this most solemn occasion, we as his teammates say well done. Whether swimming the depths, climbing the mountains, as we walk that holy place may you be with us. Thank you very much, chaplain. Thank you to secretary of defense patrick shanahan, undersecretary of the navy, thomas moogly, v. A. Secretary nominee, do a fantastic job for us, robert wilke and congressman scott taylor and brian mast. Thank you, fellas, very much. Thank you. Members of the armed forces and distinguished guests, please sit down. That worked out very nicely. And join me in welcoming the master chief to the white house, a special man, a truly brave person today we pay tribute to britts Heroic Service and we proudly present him with our nations highest military onor. I would go so far as to say our nations highest honor. Joining britt today is his son, bryce. Bryce, thank you very much. A rising senior at a Wonderful School known to the world as ohio state. Great place. Thats a great school. Along with britts sisters brenda and tika and brendas husband, tom. Thank you very much for being here. Here as well are britts significant other, christina and her two children john and megan, who we just met in the oval office. Thats a special place, too. Thank you all for joining us for this really special day and special ceremony. Thank you very much. Finally were honored to be joined by several previous congressional medal of honor recipients. Would you please stand. Would you please stand. [ applause ] very, very special people. Your names and your immortal acts of valor are forever engraved in the memory of our nation. Our nation will always be grateful to you and you know that. Today we induct a new name into the worlds most exclusive gathering of heroes and thats exactly what it is. Britt was raised in northampton, massachusetts. He became an eagle scout by the age of 14. His father was a veteran who served as a frog man in the underwater Demolitions Group of the u. S. Navy. Those are tough people. While britt was in junior high, his dad brought him to their reunion. Britt was inspired by their bond of friendship, their stories of service and their boundless love of country. As soon as he graduated from high school in 1988, britt enlisted in the navy to become a seal. That means he is a physically very strong person and that also means he is a mentally very strong person. Thats tough. Throughout the grueling months of training, britt proved himself every single step of the way. In 1990 he dprj wagraduated ane that special badge earned by only the brightest through, the seal trident. In 2002 he was called to support tra Operation Enduring freedom in afghanistan. In the late evening hours of march 3rd he led an elite team to establish a secure position on the peak of a 10,000 Foot Mountain. Britt and his teammates were preparing to exit the helicopter on to the mountain when their aircraft was struck by a machine gun and machine gun fire like theyve never seen before and a rocket propelled grenade from al qaeda terrorists down below. Not a good feeling as the helicopter lurched away from the assault, petty officer first class neal roberts was flung out of the aircraft. Tremendous, tremendous, hoshlg thing to witness. And on to the side of the mountain before the helicopter crashed into the valley below. After surviving barely the violent crash, britt and his team were retrieved by a second helicopter, also, by the way, piloted by very brave people. At this point britt received information suggesting their comrade, neal roberts, the man thrown out of the helicopter, was probably still alive. The team faced a choice, to wait for reinforcements and pretty much safety or to return immediately to the enemy stronghold in the hope of saving neals life. They would be outmanned, outgunned and fighting uphill on a steep, icy mountain and every soldier knows you dont want to fight uphill. They learned that at gettysburg. You dont fight uphill. But they would face freezing temperatures and bitter winds at the highest altitude of battle in the history of the american military. This was the highest point where we ever fought. The odds were not good. They were not in their favor, but britt and hayis team didnt even hesitate for a moment. They made their decision. For them it was an easy one. They went back to that mountain. When their helicopter reached the mountain peak, they jumped out into a furious onslaught of machine gunfire like none of them had ever seen before. Britt and his teammate, Sergeant John chappin charged uphill toward the enemy where john was shot after clearing a bunker. Britt continued to engage the enemy, repeatedly exposing himself to horrendous fire. Two of his other teammates, steven turbo tobas and brett mogante both suffered very, very serious leg injuries. Britt helped them to safety and called in air strikes as continuous fire drove them ever further down the face of the mountain, got worse and worse, more and more dangerous. He kept going. In a treacherous descent, britt and his men carried turbo through the snow. At one point they fashioned a makeshift harness out of their gun straps to hoist turbo down a 13 foot cliff. In itself treacherous because if you missed that little area, they go down the mountain and no stopping them. When they could go no further, britt tended to the wounded and coordinated their escape until his team was finally evacuated from enemy territory. Seven of the brave men who fought with britt are here with us today and maybe theyll stand up as i call their name. Petty officer second class brett morgante. Pretty dangerous place, huh . Way to go, brett. Chief warrant officer kieyle soderbergh. Thank you, kyle. Petty officer second class steven tobas. Chief warrant officer al mack. Thank you. Sergeant christopher cunningham. Master Sergeant Eric stebner, master chief petty officer still on active duty is quietly not with us today. I just want to thank you all, unbelievable acts of bravery. Thank you all very much. [ applause ] thank you very much. Incredible. Today we also remember the brave soldiers who gave their lives on that mountain. Technical Sergeant John chapman, Corporal Matthew commons, specialist mark anderson, Sergeant Bradley close, senior jason cunningham, Technical Sergeant Phillip Spivak and neal roberts, who met a horrible death, for whom these events are now known its called the battle of Roberts Ridge, incredible event. To the gold star family members of those heros who are here today, please stand up. Please stand up. [ applause ] its an honor to have you accept our nations profound or so and a deep love and ever lasting gratitude. These were incredible, incredible men. And you could be proud that they were in your family and they are looking down right now and they are very, very proud of you. Thank you very much. Thank you for being here. Thank you. To britt and to all of the men of Roberts Roberts ridge, you waged a fear fight of the enemies and these have become the enemies of america and all civilization. Through your actions you demonstrated that there is no love more pure and no courage more great than the love and courage that burns in the hearts of american patriots. We are free because warriors like you are willing to give their sweat, their blood and if they have to their lives for our great nation. Britt, you went on to serve many more years in the navy before finally retiring in 2014. Today he continues his life of serving by volunteering with the Navy Seal Foundation and on behalf of gold star families, special, special, incredible families. And as one of his fellow Service Members testifies, he is an amazing father to bryce, who like his dad is now an eagle scout. Britt wants the country to know that for him, the recognition he is about to receive is an honor that falls on the whole team. He wants you folks to know that, on the whole team. When every American Warrior who fought the forces of terror on that snowy afghan ridge, each of them has entered the eternal chronicle of american valor and american bravery. Britt, we salute you, we thank you, we thank god for making you a United States seal. We love our navy seals. Theyre very special, very incredible people. Its now my tremendous privilege to present to you the congressional medal of honor. And id like the military aide to come forward and please read the citation. Thank you. The president of the United States in the name of the Congress Takes pleasure in presenting the medal of honor to senior chief special Warfare Operator sea, air and land britt k. Slovinski, United States navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrue pidity above and beyond the call of duty while receivering in the operation of enduring freedom. Senior chief special Warfare Operator led a Reconnaissance Team to atop a 10,000 foot snow covered mountain. Their insertion helicopter was suddenly riddled with rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire from previous undetected enemy positions. It jeshd vrked violently and ej one teammate. Senior chief rallied his surviving team members and marshalled others for an assault to retrieve their team member. Without regard for his own safety, senior chief charged directly toward enemy fire to join his teammate. Together they fearlyless assaulted and cleared the furst bunker they encountered. The enemy unleashed a hail of gun fire from only 20 meters away. Senior chief repeatedly exposed himself to deadly fire to personal le to personally engain the second enemy bunker. Proximity made air supports impossible. After several teammates became casualties, the situation became untenable. He moved his team to a new position and requested reinforcement. As daylight approach, enemy fire forced the team down the mountainside. Senior chief carried a seriously wounded teammate through deep snow and called in fire on the enemy, which was engaging the team from surrounding ridges. Throughout the next 14 hours, the senior chief stabilized casualties and continued the fight against the enemy until the hill was secured and his team was extracted. By his undaunted courage, bold initiative, leadership and devotion to duty, the senior chafe reflected great credit and upheld the highest traditions of the United States naval service. [ applause ] as we close today, let us close with one final prayer. Let us pray. Almighty god, those of us who have had the privilege to witness this very special ceremony are reminded once again that we serve among the greatest of warriors, among the greatest of navys, within the greatest of nations only because of the brave few who continue to raise their hand in the protection of this great nation and those in it from those who would wish us harm, men such as our very own master chief who personifies that most cherished of virtues we strive for, which is courage. Courage for when our moment comes and we look into the abyss and we promise ourselves and others on our honor to do our best, to do our duty, for god and for our country and in so doing forge an unbreakable bond in the heat of battle, in the furnace of affliction, which strengthens, molds and galvanizes that bond only to come forth as pure gold and in this case gold in the form of a naval trident. My master chief take with him the certainty of knowing his days spent in service of this nation in the pursuit of service for all were a value beyond measure, as well as those virtues and values that delivered him to this very moment.
