Meeting. We have a very big meeting at 3 30. I call it an economic meeting, something we have to do to protect our steel, our aluminum in our country. Chief economist gary cohn, who is resigning in opposition to the president s plan. This is gary cohns last meeting in the cabinet and of the cabinet and he has been terrific. He may be a globalist but i still like him. He is seriously a globalist, no question. But in a way he is a nationalist because he loves our country. Where is gary . You love our country. And hes going to go out and make another couple hundred million and then maybe come back. Maybe come back. So, while we wait to see how the white house weathers tariffs, another heavy front is weighing over press secretary Sarah Sanders. You saw it right around this time yesterday when she establish this had official link between the president and the porn star here, sy daniels. Sander revealed that the president had won in arbitration against daniels after weeks of denying no connections with her. Daniels is suing the president , saying he did not sign this nda thats supposed to stop her from talking about their alleged affair. The president is, quote, unquote, very unhappy with sanders and her response. The lets talk about this New York Times report. The president talked to people after they were interviewed by the mueller team. Cnn has this reporting that the chief of staff here, john kelly, has had to talk to the president , right, about being careful about what he is saying with regard to special counsel. Does the president not care that theres a line here . Thats pretty much it. The important thing to keep in mind is that the reporting that Maggie Haberman with the times is very clearly about doing things that are probably untoward but not illegal. Meaning to have a conversation about testimony after testimony was given is an obstruction because youre not affecting the testimony. Its already happened. Right . But the lines of what is and is not usually done so blur red especially in this russia investigation. We know that the reporting weve done the past year, brooke, frankly, how obsessive the president is about this, that he talks about it with his friend, asks questions about it. It shouldnt be a surprise that he asks questions of people that have been interviewed. He still talks about Reince Priebus even though he left. People also surprised on this tariff thing. Lower point of his week. He starts talking about tariffs on steel and aluminum. Tweets about some sort of event today at 3 30 at the white hous house. Well see in about an hour and a half. And this, to me, is one of like sort of a can key case study of the governance of donald trump. This is not small thing. A Campaign Promise he is delivering on to, from his perspective, better protect american manufacturing. So a more traditional president , politician or leader would have briefings, have discussions, private discussions with people who disagree with him and his party. Here is what were going to do. Lay out what and why and kind of be prepared for the onslaught of opposition or even get buyin from people who support him. He has none of that. He is going to sign this. He waxes and wanes. Exactly. I was going back and forth with jeff zeleny at the white house. I said is there anything youve learned . He said even at this moment, less than an hour and a half before he has this signing ceremony, we dont know exactly what hes going to do except we understand he likely will give exemptions to canada and mexico. To Stormy Daniels. We were watching and i alluded to Sarah Sanders, what she was saying. Trump is reportedly furious with her. The story line steroids yesterday. Does he have a point . Did it sort of backfire because it was the first time, i think, we all heard on the record that now officially he is linked to all of this. Maybe if you look at the political point of view. You are not going to hear from me. Im guessing you feel the same way, any criticism of somebody at this white house or any white house giving actual information. She didnt have all the information. She didnt have the details. Its something, frankly, that is not in her lane. She said that from the wielt house podium, shes not supposed to be talking about this but did mention this socalled arbitration, which set off questions about what had gone on behind the scenes with michael c cohen, the president s longtime lawyer, and Stormy Daniels. Could you imagine being Sarah Sanders . Here is adam schiff speaking. We have requested that he return to answer specific questions that he was unwilling to answer today that are pertinent to our investigation, including questions about the production of the false statement concerning the trump tower meeting. Questions about the firing of james comey. And conversations about that as well as any discussions that mr. Lewandowski had with the president about the potential of firing bob mueller. These questions went unanswered. He did answer other questions regarding his time after the campaign. Nonetheless witnesses dont get to pick and choose when it comes to very relevant testimony in regards to our investigation. We have requested a subpoena. Whether that will be granted by the majority or not, i cannot say. We feel it very important not only to getting to the truth in terms of our investigation, but also in terms of the broader precedent that it sets, that we not allow witnesses to come in and tell us what theyre willing to answer and what they wont. Ill be happy to answer a couple of questions. What was the rationale . They didnt believe it was relevant. We emphasized repeatedly that was not their determination to ma make. Of course, whether the administration knowingly made false statements about meetings with russians is very relevant to our investigation. Whether there was alcohols taken to impede the investigation is also very relevant. It was a meritless objection but that was the least proffered reason why they refused to answer. Did the white house intervene in any way to lewandowski, to tell him not to answer these questions and did you get any support from republicans when you raised these concerns about his lack of answering these questions . I dont want to get into the specifics of conversations. All i can say is visavis whether the committee will insist on getting answers, that is being taken under advisement by the majority. I think they are struggling to determine how, if at all, to distinguish between these witnesses. In our view they ought to all be treated the same way. We shouldnt say we insist on answers from steve bannon but not from hope hicks or corey lewa lewandowski or allow the witnesses decide whats pertinent. Last question . In the past shutdown for these requests for subpoenas in role time. Why is it theyre taking it under advisement . Attendance today, perhaps on a getaway day . Was there any discussion about future interviews and what may be forthcopping . I dont think it was a function role of this being getway day. We had ample representation during the interview. We havent gotten an answer, frankly, on whether well move forward with contempt on steve bannon. They were quite unequivocal at the time but have been very quiet since. I think that are still grappling with this. Theres no way to distinguish these witnesses except some are in favor and some are out of favor with the white house. Thats not a legitimate basis to distinguish as to whether we compel people to give us the information, the facts that we need. In terms of the investigation going forward, there are any number of witnesses that are very relevant that have not come before our committee. Those that had a role, for example, in writing the speech that President Trump gave prior to the trump tower meeting where he promised he was going to be revealing things about Hillary Clinton. We know steve miller had a role in his speech writing. Others had knowledge that that meeting would take place prior to it being taken place. And, of course, large categories including communications between the likes of roger stone and others and wikileaks. The president s son and wikileaks, direct messaging that we should subpoena from the providers. There are a number of steps that i think any credible investigator would say these need to be done and we still hope that they will be. Thank you. Ranking member, the democrat there, adam schiff, on Corey Lewandowski who said had answered all the relevant questions from his house committee. Joseph moreinform o. Dana bash joining me. What was your take away from that, dana . We heard this song sung so many times at those microphones after witnesses come before this particular committee, the house intelligence committee, as they do their Russian Investigation of people in the trump orbit, Current White House officials, former officials or in this case, former campaign manager, saying theyre not going to answer all the questions. Democrats getting upset about it, asking for a subpoena. The reality is that this is a republicanled house, republicanled committee. They have made clear theyre not interested in these subpoenas and its been a very, very raw partisan investigation. I would not hold your breath that is he going to get he, adam schiff, will get what he wants. I just dont. Its important to note that it still continues to work very differently on the senate side. Youre not seeing these kind of press conferences. You dont know whats going on. At least sometimes even who is behind closed doors because theyre working genuinely still, as we know, in a bipartisan way. Does moreno . What do you think . Its absolutely right, brooke. This has been a recurring theme. Hope hicks testified before the house, the senate and before the special counsel. Yet she was selective in the topics she would address. Lichlting her conversations to the campaign and the transition period, not during her time in the white house. Yet to be seen whether subpoenas will follow to compel that testimony and further whether the white house will invoke executive privilege in an attempt to stop that testimony. Stand by, everyone. Also happening right now at the white house, the president is shifting his attention from guns to video games. Why the president s argument does not line up with the facts. Also just in, chief of staff john kelly, as we alluded to a second ago, talking to witnesses in the Robert Mueller investigation. Hear who the president actually spoke with. And mueller reportedly getting evidence that a trump associate tried to set up a secret back channel with russia and then misled investigators all about that. Those details ahead. Youre watching cnn. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Be there for you, and them. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, control is possible. We are back with more breaking news this afternoon here, just talking about Paul Manafort, facing charges of bank fraud and tax crimes. We have just learned that he and his former Trump Campaign chairman have entered a plea of not guilty. Prosecutors were saying in court they plan to call when this trial begins in july 20 to 25 witnesses and the prosecutors arguments could last up to two weeks. He also faces counts in washington. He entered this plea of not guilty, your first reaction . Not surprising, brooke. Two parallel prosecutions, one in d. C. On money launderring and conspiracy charges sbl in federal court. Right. And theres no sign. During the skeletonen of the case, second indictment put the meat on the bones. Mr. Manafort is facing serious charges here. This other piece of news, manaforts hearing comes as we learn white house chief of staff john kelly has warned the president to be careful when hes out and about talking to these witnesses in the russia investigation. Coming from the New York Times today. Theyve been reporting that trump has had conversations with at least two witnesses. Number one, being white house counsel, don mcgahn and two being Reince Priebus. With these two gentlemen who the president apparently talk ed to what exactly was said . The president really, in one case, wanted to know how the interview went. In another case it gets a little more dicey, trying to pressure don mcgahn, white house counsel, to change his story. White house official is telling cnn that john kelly has warned the president about talking to witnesses. Same official tells us that they contend that theres really nothing wrong with it. Legally speaking that is probably right. The appearance here, we learned, has really made some top aides in the white house uncomfortable. Ill go back to what the president said. The president asked former chief of staff Reince Priebus if the special counsels team had been nice. Priebus responded to the president that they were, in fact, courteous and professional but didnt give any more specifics the the second instance might be drawing some more concern here. The president told an aide that don mcgahn should issue a statement, denying what was a january 9th New York Times article that reported that don mcgahn told investigators that the president wanted to fire comey. He reminded him that, mr. President , you did ask me to oust mueller and the president , of course, pushed back against that account, according to the times saying it didnt really happen that way. Its interesting, brooke, because special counsel is now aware of both of these conversation conversations that the president had with two key witnesses. The question being raised by legal minds, could the president s comment be yet another piece in what we know is already a possible obstruction of justice probe by the special counsel . A lot of questions swirling here after this report. Brooke . Joseph moreno, back over to you about jessicas question. In talking to Reince Priebus and don mcgahn, does that cross a line . Jessica is right on. If the reporting is accurate that the chief of staff is warning the president not to talk to those witnesses, thats really good advice and he should take it. Even in the best case, theyre not bound to confidentiality and can speak about their testimony. But exactly the reason you do not want to walk into an obstruction case you really should not speak to witnesses. Its just best practices and any defense counsel would advise their client against it, particularly when youve got special counsel looking specificationcally to build an obstruction case. Joseph, thank you. Coming up, well talk about the secret meeting that happened just before inauguration between russians and people with ties to President Trump. One of the Big Questions being asked, was it a way to establish a back channel with russia . Plus one of the strangest way yet that russians tried to influence the election . Nintendo fans anyone . Back to the story about the president and the porn star. The president is, quote, unquote, very unhappy with his press secretary after she revealed a link between him and Stormy Daniels, who is suing the president now saying he did not klein that nondisclosure agreement that is supposed to stop her from talking about their alleged affair. Criminal defense attorney seema ire and criminal defense attorney Darren Oakley who hoefs dead lly sins. Seema, why do you think storma d daniels waited an entire year to question the ndas validity . I think she was abiding by it until Michael Cohen might have opened the door, violating the agreement, thus allowing her to open her mouth. Even if the party who its intended to protect violates it, the other party gets all bets are off. I can talk now. As recently as last week, according to this lawsuit, theyre saying that cohen, trump, they were trying to, in their words, shut her up with this lawsuit. Right. Here is more from daniels attorney. These threats continued until, in fact, only a few hours ago, when mr. Rosen, lawrence rosen, the attorney who now purports to represent mr. Cohen and the entity ec, llc, sent email correspondence to me, threatening if miss daniels continues to talk, she may be suth subje subjected to significant additional damages. Darren, do you think Stormy Daniels, her attorney, do you think they have some sort of evidence that trump or the campaign really forced her into silence . I think there is good evidence there and theyre doing the right thing by seeking declaratory judgment by a court and thats when one party is unclear about their rights and responsibilities and go into court to get a judge to issue an order about what they can or cannot do. So now once theyre into court, the judge basically has two options. He or she can set it for an evidentiary hearing and allow that to go forward or, according to this hush agreement, it calls for a binding arbitration in the event of any dispute. The most critical question in my mind off the bat is who the judge that will be deciding this . That could tell us which way or the other this could lean. And then, of course, what counsel is referring to there in terms of the significant damages, is that the contract does call for a 1 million liquidated damages clause in the event of any kind of disclosure. Each, right . Each. Could be multiple million, depending on how many times . Of course. The whole strategy from the Stormy Daniels team that, seema, its aggressive. And we were talking earlier, almost like using the trump playbook against him, get the dirty laundry outlet the there, this out in the court of public opinion. What do you make of that . This is exactly why trump isnt happy that Sarah Sanders said something in the press briefing. Its feeding into the Stormy Daniels team now, their pl playbook. Right . Yes. The more the trump team talks, the more Stormy Daniels team has ammunition. I think that trump should be pichlt ssed that Sarah Sanders said anything. Sorry. Thats okay. Text, videos, photos that exist . Yeah. Absolutely, no question. Yeah, yeah. One of the things that may be difficult for Stormy Daniels and their team is that or her team rather, that the contract is signed by dd or donald trump and ec on one side and stormy on the other. One of the big noises that stormys team is making is that trump didnt sign the contract as dd his alias there but that little twoletter word or that could be a problem. If its either trump and or cohens shell company, ec, who could bind that side, ec did sign that agreement through cohen. Exactly what seema was talking about, it was simply trumps side that opened the door, kicked open the door through cohens comments in the media. Darren and seema, thank you very much. Thank you. Now this question swirling around this key trump associate and secret meeting in the seychelles. Was the goal a secret back channel to the kremlin . Liberty mutual saved us almost 800 when we switched our auto and home insurance. Liberty did what . Yeah, they saved us a ton, which gave us a little wiggle room in our budget. I wish our insurance did that. Then we could get a real babysitter instead of your brother. Hey, welcome back. This guy, right . laughs yes. Ellen. Thats my robe. You could save 782 when liberty stands with you. Liberty mutual insurance. A mysterious meeting in the seychelles known as as a haven for offshore banking. Participants, firm blackwater, russian fund manager and officials from the united arab emirates. The whole thing reads like a spy novel but is subject of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Trump Campaigns plans to set up a secret back channel with the kremlin. Now news that blackwaters erik prince and brother of education betsy devos, may have when would the truth about who else was at that meeting. George nader, ties with the Trump Campaign. Devlin, nice to see you. You are speaking with people familiar with this whole investigation. What are you hearing about what exactly happened in the seychelles . The meeting has been a mystery for a long time. We originally reported that it was an important meeting to establish a back channel between the kremlin and trump administration. Erik prince, who you mentioned, denied that and to investigators over and over and over. Now we learned another participant in those meetings, george nader, has basically provided evidence and Robert Mueller has other evidence that contradicts princes version of event zpls part of the denial is that prince never mentioned nader. Now that mueller knows these things, how will that his whole storyline . It will be interesting to see how erik prince handles this. When we called for comment, he referred us back to his comments to congress. Which have been cast in doubt, we should say. He knows nader, who once worked for prince. Some of his answer are far more curious, just knowing that george nader was there but obviously its problematic for this whole issue of what were the trump transition officials trying to do right before the inauguration . This seems to be one of the earliest versions and attempts to do that. Devlin barrett, washington post, thank you very much. Thank you. In the wake of the parkland shooting, jared mosqueowitz spoke before lawmakers when passing this historic gun bill in response to the shooting last month that killed 17. A democrat, he represents parkland, florida and is also a graduate from douglas high school. His young sons teacher lost a daughter in that shooting, 14yearold jamie guttenberg. Here is what he said just before the bill was approved to raise the age to 21 and allow some teachers to can carry gun. My 4yearold, who recently learned how to write his name, samuel we went with sam. Its easier to write. He had been so happy to learn how to write his name but he wanted to get better. We signed him up for a writing class. That writing class was going on in parkland the afternoon of february 14th around the corner from douglas and that class was taught by jen guttenberg. You see, she lost her daughter, jamie, while she was teaching my son how to write. She put my kid in the closet when her daughter died. I wanted to say thank you at the funeral. I didnt know how to do that. Florida state representative Jared Moskowitz is with me now. Representative moskowitz, my deepest condolences. What florida was able to accomplish yesterday. Can you tell me what you were feeling as you were standing there, speaking up . Yeah. You know, it still is surreal to me. Ive been telling everybody, you know, the city of parkland, nobody knew where that was when people asked me when i served on the city commission, where the hell was parkland . I used to try to explain it to them. Now the world knows where parkland is. Its on the list of columbine, sandy hook, virginia tech. What these families have gone through, what these kids have gone through, its just unimaginable. These parents should be grieving for their children not lobbying us to do the obvious, what was right for the last decade. These kids and parents have been tremendous. Without them, this never would have happened. It took democrats and republicans. This is a Republicancontrolled Legislature or republicancontrolled senate, republicancontrolled senate, republican governor who decided that they had had enough of the nra and tell the nra its finally enough. What is stunning about what you all passed in florida is that it flies in the face of what the nra stands for, specifically raising the age to purchase any firearm to 21 from 18. Can you tell me more about the meat in this legislation that you all passed . At the end of the day it answers the ultimate question. Would this have prevented the parkland shooter from committing the heinous crime, terrorist act that he did . The answer is yes. If youre under the age of 21, you will not be able to buy a firearm. If you try to buy the firearm und over the age of 21 theres a mandatory wait period so you can go through a background check. If youre a danger to yourself, danger to others, red flag restraining order language in a number of states and supported by every town for gun control and the giffords folks that will make sure you dont have access to weapons and if you do, we will take them from you. We strengthened the baker act for people who are mentally ill, to make sure they dont have access to weapons. Well spend 100 million on school hardening, 100 million on mental health. And this is the complete package, comprehensive package. Yes, there is a component in here that i dont like and i dont support which is potentially if there are local communities out there that decide that they want School Personnel to go through the training so that they can be armed to prevent this thing happening in their neighborhood thats in the bill, too. People have to understand that republicans had to vote for gun control. You know, thats not popular in their neck of the woods. So youve got to put stuff in the bill that makes them want to vote for this legislation. And so this is what compromise looks like. Its not clean. Its dirty. Its not a 50 50 compromise but they moved out of their corner and they told the nra, which has had free reign here for 20 years, that enough is enough. Were going to make a difference. And the march is not the march forward. Its going to be the march backward and the retreat on the nonsense going on here with action toes guns. I want to play some sound in the wake of what you all accomplished and i know this has to go on to the governor for his signature. I want to play some sound. This is the president commenting on your work today. And i want to congratulate the state of florida and your representatives on some very good legislation thats been passed. I guess theyve been listening to me a lot more because, unexpectedly, they passed concealed carry for some very special teachers that have a great ability with weapons and with guns. And they passed that. It was somewhat surprising to people because they didnt go in thinking about that. But i guess they liked what i said. They liked what i said. Does the president deserve a little credit for what you all accomplished . No, i dont need to give the president any credit. Im a lowly state representative. Hes the president. My members shouldnt have to do this. He has very expensive, fancy paper in his oval office, very expensive pens. He could have signed an executive order dealing with bump stocks a long time ago. But we had to deal with it because he refused to. You know, he was talking about gun control and then all of a sudden he decided talking about tar. Iffs. He was telling us when he was running hes not a regular politician, hes going to be different. Hes no different. He has done the exact same thing that the last couple of president s have done, which is not enough. I mean, do an executive order on assault weapons ban, mr. President. Sign an executive order on bump stocks. We dont need to wait for jeff sessions. You dont even like jeff sessions. What are we waiting for him for . Get some nice paper out. Im sure youve got plenty of pens. Sign an executive order. I dont need any thank you. You heard andy pollack. He came to you and said youre going to fix t youve done nothing to fix it. Theres plenty of time. Do something. Florida state representative Jared Moskowitz, thank you. Thank you, brooke. Under way right now, the south koreans hand delivering a secret message from north Koreas Kim Jongun to the white house. Stand by for that. Moments from now the president will lead a signing ceremony for his controversial tariffs on steel and aluminum hours after his former Campaign ChairmanPaul Manafort pled not guilty to bank fraud and tax crimes.
