Lawmakers face to face tomorrow. Five of the 17 kill rd being laid to rest or honored today. This is also the first press briefing over at the white house since russians were indicted for election meddling since new white House Clearance rules came out in the wake of accused wife abuser rob porter, since a second woman reportedly revealed she had an affair with the president before he took office and much of the above and more. Thats the last couple of days. Lets get to cnn White House Correspondent pamela brown. Lets start on russia. The president tweeting about russia and still im seeing nothing on changing fwun laws. Reporter thats right. There hasnt been anything there. That will be a key question in the wake of the School Shooting in parkland, florida. The call from the student activists asking for a change in gun laws. You can sxkt a lot of questions to the press secretary, Sarah Sanders, here, and what the president plans to do about it. After the Las Vegas Shooting, the white house came out and said it would support a ban on stock bumps. Nothing has happened in that regard. The question will be why should americans believe that something will happen this time around . Though the white house has said that the president supports this bipartisan bill on capitol hill that would essentially strengthen background checks. There will be a lot of questions when it comes to russia. As you know, brooke, on friday there were 13 russians who were indicted. Since then, the president has gone after several people and entities except for russia itself. He has not strongly condemned russia. This morning he says he has been tougher on russia than his predecessor, barack obama. That leads to the question then why hasnt the white house imposed sanctions on russia . That was overwhelmingly passed by congress. As you pointed out, brooke, a myriad of subjects and issues are expected to be covered here. Last week there was supposed to be a briefing wednesday last night with general kelly to address the porter scandal. That was then canceled its been a week since that was canceled the. The room is packed, lot of reporters with a lot of questions. The briefing was just moved to 3 00 p. M. We thought it was too good to be true for it to start on time. Brook sne. There we go. In an hour. Tomorrow is a big day here on cnn, were hosting a town hall with parkland students, parents. The president also hosting his own listening session. Do we know exactly who has he been listening to and who has he been meeting with when it can comes to guns . Theres a Law Enforcement seminar today. This was prescheduled, we should point out. The president will be meeting with High School Students and teachers tomorrow, for what the white house, as you pointed out, has dubbed a listening session. Unclear of whats to come out that have session and if the president s will meet directly at the students there in parkland, who have been very outspoken, calling for change. Brooke . Pam, thank you. The briefing is in an hour. Cnn special correspondent jamie gangel, Washington Post katherine gambel. And chris cillizza. The president on twitter, he has taken to task the fbi, obama, oprah. Insecure. Who he says is insecure. Why wont he condemn russia . Donald trump is not consistent on a lot of things but he is consistent on this one thing. Weve seen it from the begin. I think that is the question we all keep asking he investigation goes on. What is he so worried about . What is he so concerned about . How does this fit with his make America Great and wrapping himself in the American Flag . With russia. With russia. It is the one place he will not go. And so it obviously has raised questions and its going to continue to. Its not only that he wont condemn russia, but he has been very secretive about his own meetings with putin and those in his orbit, why they are meeting with putin. One was last year when he had this secret meeting where only putin and putins own translator was present and why were there no other americans present to witness that interaction. Theres a lot of suspicious things going on if, in fact, this relationship is innocent, it seems like he should be more willing to openly condemn i had Mary Katherine sitting in your seat yesterday. Just because he seems nice to the president , the president doesnt need to be nice to putin. He needs to say russia, stop forget whatever dirt russia may have on him. There are a lot of conspiracy theories about that. We dont know. Right. But he has been very consistent to be unable to criticize anyone who says nice things about him. Its not just putin. Neo nazis, david duke, unsavory characters who did not necessarily have the best interests of americans at heart but said nice things about him. He cant bring himself to say mean things back. Criticizing his predecessor, president obama, saying ive been much tougher on russia than obama. Just look at the facts. Total fake news. Obama personally warned putin against interfering, imposed sanctions on russian individuals, expeled 35 russian diplomats, closed two russian compounds in the u. S. The easiest way to get him to refuse a policy is say obama did the reverse. Lots of democrats, including adam schiff, leading democrat on the House Intelligence Committee who have complaints that the Obama Administration did not do enough in 2016, knowing what they knew about russian meddling. What happened was obama went to congressional leadership and was told by republicans, including mitch mcconnell, we dont want you pushing this any more publicly during 2016. We will consider it a sort of partisan use of your authority and putting the thumbs on the scale for hillary. So, he was blocked by republicans on the hill by making a bigger deal out of the russian meddling. Once the election was over, during the transition, remember, the Obama Administration did retaliate. They kicked russians out of the United States. Right, 35. Russian diplomats, instituted new sanctions. As soon as that happens, the trump team, which was coming in, started talking to the russians. We dont know exactly what was said but the can conversations reportedly were dont worry about those sanctions. A new team is coming and there will be a more conciliatory approach to this issue. This idea that trump is saying obama didnt do enough idea just does not square with the facts, especially on meddling. Well hear what Sarah Sanders has to say. An indictment is an indictment. Thee guys havent been convicted in a court of law. Very detailed indictment that basically 13 spies, some of which came to the United States, right knee around theky gathered intelligence and spent three years spending millions of dollars on a propaganda and influence campaign in this country and weve not heard a word from our political leaders in the white house about why we should be worried about this. Precisely my first question, which is why has he not go ahead. Just one thing to remind us about, because you were talking about we dont have proof. We dont know about collusion. When he had the meeting with the Russian Ambassador at the white house after he fired comey. What did he say . The pressure is off me. Now it just seemed completely surreal that the president of the United States would be speaking to the Russian Ambassador this way, having just fired his fbi director. The same meeting where he spilled the beans about an allys ability to collect very sensitive information. Exactly. Do you think the president he has been all over the map the last couple of decades, how he has been on gun activism and control. Do you think he will be on the side of stricter gun laws . I certainly hope so. If you look at the polling, a Strong Majority of republicans want socalled common sense gun reforms. Its Something Like nine out of ten want universal background checks. Republicans, remember. Nine out of ten think that we should be making it harder for people who have been diagnosed with Mental Illness to obtain firearms. It should not be such a divisive issue chump said he was going to wash away partisan divisions, loyalties that washington has. He has accepted a lot of money from the nra and been incredibly inconsistent on his own positions on gun control. If he wants to be on the side of the american people, including republicans, certainly a lot of Popular Support for him. Isnt part of it with the president like who is directly in front of him, giving him information . He was is your vying people about maralago about this. The fact, don jr. And eric trump are saying one thing and Geraldo Rivera is saying maybe you should consider moving the age from 18 to 21. What do you make of this . Ideological, hes flexible personally. If you look at his history of discussing politics he has been all over. One thing that surprised us, political reporters covering the primaries was how flexible he was on core republican issues. What weve seen with him in office is that the Republican Party is Strong Enough, congressional wing of the Republican Party has been Strong Enough to basically reign in all of the views that he had when it comes to things like entitlements and the size of government and tax cuts and, frankly and health care. Thats right. And at the end of the day, the paul ryan, mitch mcconnell, traditional conservative is the agenda that has been enacted in washington under trump and all of trumps sort of nationalist policies and all these things that perhaps represented something new on the right, they just havent been enacted. Right . So on guns i am very skeptical that trump is this nixon to china figure that suddenly will convince the Republican Party to change its position. And interestly he was never straight from as a republican candidate. Always right in lont line with the nra. That was a huge help in his victory. The structural factors in the Republican Party, keeping them tied to this view on gun control, i dont think trump is going to break that. Well be curious to hear how Sarah Sanders takes that. After las vegas, they were saying now is not the right time when it came to bump stocks. Well see where they are on that. Last question on one of these trump accusers, weve heard her story. Im talking about rachel crooks. She was working in a building where she essentially says the president grabbed her, kissed her cheek and forcibly kissed her lips, called it inappropriate. The president is tweeting about this today. Youre looking at a picture from the Washington Post today. Presumably the president saw this and tweeted out two tweets here on this story and i guess, jamie gangel, you know, he is denying. Hes then talking about someone getting paid for some false story. Again, this is how many days after students were shot and not calling out russia and this is what the president chooses to tweet about. No tweets on gun control. Here is something he is consistent on, correct . Deny, deny, deny. Clearly, we see gets under his skin. For better or worse, we do have some transparency. He comes right back with it. So, i dont think hes going to change in that way. Michael cohen, the lawyer, paying all this money to something that didnt happen. I mean, its ridiculous on the face of it. Can we just go back to the gun control for one minute . Please. I am very curious to see on march 24th on washington with all these kids coming. Because im hearing from people not even young people, who have never marched on washington who want to come. And we know President Trump is very sensitive about the size of crowds. I think it will be very interesting to see if that crowd is bigger than his Inauguration Day crowd, how he deals with it. But just how he deals with the next couple of weeks, to your point, im skeptical, too. I dont think hes going to change. I think it will be a fascinating dynamic. Thank you all so much. We watch and wait for this White House Briefing. Sarah sanders, again this is the first time shes briefed since this tragedy in parkland, florida. Thank you all so much. Coming up next, speaking of, well take you live on board the bus that is taking these dozens of student survivors to the capital of florida, to tallahassee, to meet with lawmakers. Stand by for that. What if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . So i made a point to talk to my doctor. He told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. Eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis had both. And that turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if switching to eliquis is right for you. Were back with breaking news right now. A lawyer for rick gates is in court right now, expecting to plead guilty to lying to investigators. Alex van der zwaan was recently named in the treasury departments list of russian oligarches. He worked for gates, righthand man to Trumps Campaign manager manafort. It adds to mounting evidence that Trump Campaign officials worked with russian allies. Jessica schneider is outside of that District Court in d. C. Jessica, whats the story behind the expected guilty plea and what does this mean big picture in the russia investigation . Reporter well, brooke, this hearing begins in about ten minutes. I was inside the courthouse when alex van der zwaan walked in. He looked calm and collected and was surrounded by his attorneys. The charges here are fairly interesting. Hes actually charged with lying to the special prosecutors investigators with conversations he had with rick gates, deputy to Paul Manafort who worked on the Trump Campaign. Its not exactly clear what those communications were or what exactly he may have been lying about. Interestingly, it might be less about the charges here, when it pertains to alex van der zwaan and more about who he is and what kind of information he might have. Alex van der zwaan was an attorney with the prominent law firm skadden arps. They have been cooperating with authorities here. He is recently married to the daughter of a very Prominent Russian billionaire german khan, one of the most prominent businessmen in russia. Cofounder of alpha bank. Alex van der zwaan has those connections to Paul Manafort and rick gates. Paul manafort commissioned a report that was draft bid van der zwaan and others in 2012 that was used by the prorussian ukrainian president s viktoranukovychs allies in backing the jailing of an opponent. Theres that link to Paul Manafort here. He was indicted the end of october and has pled not guilty. The charges did stem for his work for lobbying for the prorussian ukrainian. Its more so than maybe the minimal charges that alex van der zwaan is being charged with here, including lying to vergs. It might be about what other information does he have and could this put pressure on Paul Manafort . Paul manafort pled not guilty several months ago. Could this latest, perhaps, guilty plea were expecting here at 2 30, could that put the pressure on Paul Manafort . We are expecting a guilty plea from this lawyer who worked for Paul Manafort and rick gate. Good question pertaining to Paul Manafort. Jessica schneider is on it. Right now, we are with the bus that will take dozens of students to meet with florida lawmakers. Funerals and Memorial Services for the shooting victims are happening today. Three of those being laid to rest today were rotccadets. Medal of heroism will be awarded to alaina petty, peter wang and martin duque anguiano. While this tragedy ended the lives of 17 students and teachers, it created a new core of activists. Bus loads of students who survived the shooting are on their way to the capital of florida to challenge their state lawmakers to take some sort of action on gun safety. Diane gallagher is on board one of those buses. So, diane, tell me what these teenagers tell me had an they want specifically. Reporter so, yeah, were en route right now. Weve been traveling for not so long yet. Were on the florida turnpike, heading into our sevenhour journey to tallahassee, because these teenagers want to affect change. This here, youre going to see there are three of us buses going up to tallahassee here. Ive got senior sammy, who goes to msd. Talk to me a little bit about why youre going to tallahassee. For reform, for change. This is not going to happen again. Not at my school, not at any school. I dont want anyone to feel how i feel or how any of my fellow classmates and schoolmates feel. One of my closest friends was a victim but hes going to be okay. But another one of my Close Friends was a victim and hes not going to be okay. Hes going to be looking down on us, but no one should have to go through this. Its tough but dont worry, everyone, its not going to happen again. It really isnt. What are you going to ask those lawmakers when you get to tallahassee . Im going to ask those lawmakers to do so much. Were going to have to not only do extensive checks but for these people to get guns but were going to have to do more than that. Im not exactly sure i dont have a certain plan of attack yet but im going to. I have a lot to tell them about that i dont want to disclose right now but i do. Thank you so much, sammy. So, when they started the journey, a moment that kind of gives you an idea of this really unfortunate and sad fraternity that theyre a part of now, there were four survivors of the pulse nightclub massacre who came on here and told them we are with you. We see you. We love you. We appreciate what youre doing. And they passed around letters from survivors from the Las Vegas Shooting last year so they could read them. And theyre letters of thanks and love and telling them also they are with them on this quest to create change and prevent more Mass Shootings in the future. Some of the organizers are going to be meeting with the governor. Theyre going to be meeting with state lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. These teenagers here, these students, to let them know their feelings of not just what happened but the ways they would like to see action be taken. Theyre all individuals, brooke, of course. Each one of them have different feels on what should be done. They feel like their voice should be heard and theyre putting their money where their mouth is, riding these buses seven hours across state to do so. They have time to give it a good think of just what they want to ask lawmakers there in tallahassee who will be making time for them. Well follow the ride along the way. Diane gallagher, thank you so much. Do not miss a special town hall tomorrow night. Survivors of the parkland shooting will be joining us. Jake tapper will moderate that with discussion with students and florida lawmakers tomorrow night, 9 00 eastern here on cnn. Coming up next ill speak to a woman who destroyed her own gun. It has been watched now 17 million times. People have always said theres so many of them out there. Now theres one less. Now theres one less. How about this in my next guest used an angle grinder to destroy her semi automatic handgun. I made holes so you can see daylight through there. Now all this stuff is unusable. Amanda meyer is with me now. Weve all seen the video. Why did you choose to destroy your gun . So, over time i came to the conclusion that people dont really need semi automatic weapons. And also i was sort of starting to advocate against other people having them and realized it was hypocritical that i had one as well. I thought the best thing to do would be to get rid of it. Before we go further we should also point out you have been personally affected by gun violence. Do you mind sharing that . Yeah. Three standout examples for me would be first and foremost my brother committed suicide with a gun and that was a really difficult situation. And then also sandy hook occurred about 20 miles from where i was teaching. So it wasnt really close but it was close enough to scare us all. And then my cousin and his wife were actually at the concert in vegas. Thankfully, they had a plane to catch so they could get back to work on time so they left before the shooting occurred. But, you know, they really could have been there. Just like that school could have been our school and they could have been at that concert. Those things are hitting too close to home these days. It is personal for you. It is personal for so Many Americans. Something i was thinking about today. There are so many can you help people understand how conflicting it must feel to want to own a gun but also destroy it before it falls in the hands of a sick person . Yeah. This is where humanity comes in. So, you have to do the cost benefit analysis at some point. So, to me its totally normal to be around guns. I grew up around guns. We go out shooting guns. Family christmas, its not family christmas until you go out and shoot targets. You have to do the cost benefit analysis and we say that these guns were made for killing people. Semi automatic weapons were made for killing people. So theres no question about that. Hunt with them. Its their only function. Do we really want to contribute to a culture that is endorsing that . It starts to weigh on you after a time. I think that evolves over time if you spend any amount of effort thinking about it. You eventually reach the conclusion that the benefits do not outweigh the costs and that society is suffering even if youre not personally doing anything, youre still contributing to that culture. So Many Americans are destroying their guns. I was reading this facebook post. This man ben dickman, handed over his gun to Law Enforcement. I could easily have sold this rifle. But no person needs this. I will be the change i want to see in the world. If our lawmakers will continue to close their eyes and open their wallets i will lead by example. For people like him. For people like you, for friends of yours who own guns, who are moved by these parkland students, will they do the same with their guns or are they just not there yet . I think its clear that theres a lot of people who arent there yet but at least were having the conversation and thats so important. What do you think got you there thats not getting the others there yet . Does that make sense . Yeah. I think thats a great question. I think that its a complex combination of factors. I think maybe demographics have a lot to do with it. Where you live, the way that you grew up. Do you still live there . Ive moved around and seen different things. Ive spent a lot of thing reading the news and statistics and i think for people who are just comfortable in their situation, theyre probably not out doing that and exploring those things. So, i think its just becoming more curious about the reasons why youre doing something and trying to figure out why youre living your life in a certain way and starting to question that. We should also point out, amanda, as were sitting here, talking on national tv, were not sharing your location. Its my understanding appreciate that. You got t after posting the video of you destroying your gun youve been getting all kinds of threats. Yeah. Can you tell me what kind of threats, how bad they are . Whats concerning about this actually is that all of the progun people, hard core progun people are saying its not the guns fault. Its just because our world is not respectful enough. People dont respect each other anymore. Then they go on social media and bash me and say i hope someone breaks into your house and has a gun and you realize why you needed that gun. Or they question my Mental Fitness because of my brothers suicide or something, you know. So, theres just terrible, terrible things. Its awful. Really disconcerting. I dont take it personally because its social media and its a really interesting animal. But at the same time its concerning that thats the mindset and i think thats something that we need to change on social media. I appreciate your voice. Your message is powerful, amanda meyer. Thank you so much. Moments from now the white householding that first briefing against several events, including that mass shooting in florida, indictments from friday. Com President Trumps all in the family approach is raising more ethical concerns for this current administration. His son, don junior, is touring india at the moment to help sell trump tower apartments. He told the press trust of india that trump towers in the country will, quote, open up the country to much more outside investment from places like the United States and full page newspaper ads like these have encouraged buyers to sign up with the promise of, quote, a conversation sorry yeah, a conversation and dinner with don junior. Cristine alesci is with me now. City mixing politics and business . And whats the reaction . Reporter my sources inside and outside of government tell me this crosses an ethical line. The context here is the Trump Organization has five projects in india. Its actually their biggest market outside of the u. S. For the family. This is a very important market. The more condos they sell at higher prices, the more that this will help the familys bottom line that. Is what the problem is here. As you mentioned, these ads explicitly say promise to buy a condo and you will have access to the president s son. That says to some people that the president s son is sending a signal to access to the president. Thats whats troubling so many ethical experts, even those currently in government who see this as a problem. Making matters worse, to your point, is that hes making geopolitical statements while there, don junior. Hes essentially saying india is better for business than other countries, like china. You know, this it raises all sorts of questions as to whether or not american politics is up for sell. These really stem from the plan to separate the president from his businesses. Remember, he said the president will have nothing to do with the business. The children are going to run it. The problem is, there are a bunch of holes in that plan that make it very clear that all roads do lead back to the president. He has put his assets in a trust. But, again, that trust is revocable. That means the president can dissolve it at any moment. Just because its happening doesnt mean its okay. Its happening. Isnt this fine . It doesnt necessarily mean that. Wow cristina, thank you very much for talking to your sources for that on us who say it does look like the line is blurred. That White House Briefing should begin any moment now. The depression was more stemmed from losing his mother not all the things about they said him being bullied or things that happened in school and all the issues that have now come out.
