Significant as bad it was. Do you know the motive of why this guy attacked you like that . You know, i think no one can ever know someones motives, whether it was political or personal. To my mind there has been a little bit too emphasis in the mo media about lack of concern of me. We are very concerned about you. I know. But thats my point. If someone is it raped, pillaged, mugged, it should be about punishment. And the person that did this needs to be punished. Whether or not they thought they were justified in their mind, there is no justification for attacking someone from behind, breaking ribs and causing me life threatening injuries. But right now are you okay . Have you completely recovered . Or do you still have to go through more treatment . I still have pain every day, all day. But i dont have i had the pain of 1,000 knives for about six weeks. I could barely move and barely breathe. I couldnt sleep. And so i am better than i was, but i wont say im back to normal yet. But i am getting better. Well, we hope you make a complete, complete recovery. Awful, awful situation. Senator paul, thanks so much for joining us. Thank you. Thats it for me. Ill be back 5 00 p. M. Eastern in the the situation room. In the meantime, the news continues right now. This is cnn breaking news. Here we go. You are watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Thanks for being with me. We are standing by for president s News Conference of 2018 at the white house. He will take two questions alongside the leader of norway. So stay tuned for that. Another first of the year president made a clarification from all the confusion from yesterday. 55 minutes of free wheeling, frank talk, on camera, as lawmakers from both sides try to solve this dilemma over immigration, over d. R. E. A. M. Ers. They are the 700,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u. S. As kids. A judge has made this hugely impact full ruling on their fate. Wheat get flew that. But first let me play something you this is the president stressing any legislation on d. R. E. A. M. Ers also known as daca must be tied to his border wall. We agreed to pursue four major areas yesterday of reform. Securing our border, including, of course, the wall, which has always been included, never changed. Ending chain migration. Canceling the visa lottery. And addressing the status of the daca population. We want to see something happen with daca. Its spoken of for years. And children are now adults, in many cases. Above all else, any bill we passed must improve jobs, wages, and security for american citizens. The people who elected us, all of us, the people that elected us, we have to take care of them. We have Kaitlan Collins standing by for us at the white house. And, kaitlan, the president had a lot to say about that extraordinarily meeting yesterday including how well it was received. Reporter yeah, thats right, brooke, as he welcomed the press back to, quote, the studio today, the pred talksident talk about a lot of things, including daca. But opened up lawmakers dac a to the cameras for 55 minutes. And we certainly saw the president enjoying that praise that he got. It was certainly something that doesnt happen very often. And it did allow people the chance to watch what is going on as the president negotiates with lawmakers. But the white house is also trying to accomplish Something Else by opening that up to everyone by letting the press come in, which was proving that essentially the president can do his job, especially in light of those allegations made in the new book, fire and fury by micha michael wolff, a lot part questions whether he is competent enough to be in office. But the president is riding high as he talks about this coverage in this meeting here today. Actually, it was reported as incredibly good. And my performance, some of them called it a performance. I consider it work. But great reviews by everybody other than two networks, who were phenomenal for about two hours, then after that they were called by their bosses, wait a minute. Unfortunately a lot of those anchors sent us letters saying that was one of the greatest meetings they ever witnessed. So, brooke, weve asked the white house which anchors it was that sent letters to the president. They have not said which ones specifically but we will hear from the president after he sends a press conference. Good question. I dont know how they send alert in 24 hours. Well get to the bottom of that. So lets analyze this. Thank you very much. And i have with me my panel. And cnn legal analyst laura coates a former federal prosecutor. Ladies, dana, let me start with this, tale of two meetings. You look at yesterday kind and today the president is sitting there arms crossed referencing notes. We are going after libel laws. What do you make of that . Who knows. Its hard to really say. Look, he obviously was very pleased with yesterday. But the problem is that the reason why yesterday was so stunning to all of us is because we got a window into conversations that the president and republicans and democrats were having about substance. The president wasnt talking about his approval ratings, his performance, about suing people. Yesterday it was a president doing his job. And there are lots of discussions about things that he didnt get right in terms of facts, but you know what, he was doing his job. And we got a window into the conversations that we know happen all the time. That is why, not just me, but other people who are not easy to impress, people who have seen a lot of Different Things in this town for a long time from networks and news outlets across the board thought that was striking. Today was more of the donald trump that we have seen over the past year in the white house and has been the different kind of president talking about himself as opposed to doing the job that we saw yesterday. What did you think . Yesterday, forget the tale of two meetings, it was a tale of two donalds. Its a different donald trump from everything we heard during the campaign. What i saw yesterday . I saw an opening, an opening for congress. Heres the bottom line. We have somewhere between 800,000 and 3 million young people who are affected whose lives, whose future is in limbo and who need an answer. We have now a court case. We have congress with a deadline. What i saw yesterday was what i hadnt seen in a long time. Bipartisanship. Compromise. Ability to legislate, to actually discuss issues and come up with answers. Bra brainstorming. Construct sti constructive brainstorming. We havent seen that in a dysfunctional washington in a long time. Maybe it takes having cameras in there and in the negotiating rooms in order for it to become a better more constructive less polarized process. On immigration and on this daca stance, are you clear, anna, on where the president stands on all of this . Im clear that he said to congo get it done. Go negotiate something. Get something that passes pmustr bring it back to me and ill sign it. So now i think the honor is on the congress. Some have been working on Immigration Reform for decades, like Lindsey Graham, diane feinstein, bob mendez. They know this cold. If they are in a deal making mood they can do this in 48 hours. Let me move off of immigration just a second because laura i want to bring you into this conversation. Because the president in todays meeting also really went on about this. We are going to take a strong look at our countrys libel laws so that when somebody says something that is false and defamatory about someone, that person will have meaningful recourse in our courts. If somebody says something thats totally false and knowingly false, that the person that has been abused, defamed, libelled, will have meaningful recourse. Our current libel laws are a sham and a disgrace and do not represent American Values or american fairness. Laura, why is the president taking this minute in this first Cabinet Meeting to talk about strengthening our countrys libel laws . Clearly, the timing of this is not so opaque. He was tweeting this morning about the fire and fury book and the dossier all on the president s displeasure with the idea hes being targeted in his mind and the media and media reporting. However, the Supreme Court has been quite clear in the words of meal gorsuch, for, oh, gosh 50 or 60 years these laws are not a sham. Although the president may believe that he has the ultimate authority overriding a lot of laws, tort, state libel law is a matter of state tort law, not a matter of federal purview. Which means the First Amendment would have to be changed or additional amendment to the constitution. Or the Supreme Court who over turns it or individual states, federalism would have to be the wi ones to change it. There is a reason for that, as many years ago when he talked about this case in the sullivan versus New York Times it was about the notion political environment. We want to have open and sometimes critical and as they call it caustic public commentary on public figures. So hell have more than uphill battle to change that particular law. Dana, back on immigration, do you get the sense that this confusing daca stance, and i do think maybe we should give the president some credit for the line, let me take the heat. I dont know if hes getting enough credit for that. Let me take the heat, blow back if he does this, does daca. Are you clearer on the president s parameters, where he stands, where this is going to go . Yes. The president s parameters are anything that he can sign. Anything that he can sign, really, at this point. And that was the sort of idea behind that statement that you are talking about, brooke, im taking the heat. And its exactly as anna said, these people sitting around the table, they are negotiators, they are historically the negotiators who have had idea after idea to get things done but havent been able to do so because of the far right and the far left. Much more so on the far right. And they have taken bipartisan compromise after compromise and flushed it down the toilet they have said, particularly the right, no way. Anyone that allows anyone undocument mated to stay in the country is amnesty. And what the president said is im going to take the heat on that. That is so huge. As anna has been living it for more than a decade. Ive been covering republican politics and sort of legislative fight on immigration for more than a decade. It is so huge. It started with george w. Bush who wanted to take the heat but didnt have the Political Capital to do with the base by the time he got there. Donald trump does. So the whole sort of back and forth about will there be a wall, wont there, what does the wall look like. Those are the details that matter, but in terms of how its being sold only matters in terms of how the players who are now given the authority to really find compromise and given the authority to ignore the base, how they can find that compromise. You know, the reality is donald trump is uniquely situated to be able to do something that george w. Bush tried. That barack obama wanted to do. Ann and eluded both of them. And i think he likes that, that he can check off a box that eluded both of them. He has the capital. When george bush tried it he had no capital left. I remember it was a horrible time in the republican party. Republican base was sending bricks to republican senators and the white house. It was open warfare from people like Rush Limbaugh and others on the right. When barack promised it, by the time he tried to do it he had spent all his Political Capital on health care. Donald trump has proven this week in his fight, in his tug of war that was maybe caused by this book with steve bannon that he is the guy with whom the Republican Base will stick. Its not Steve Bannons base. Its not ann cultures base. It is Donald Trumps base. And when he says im willing to take the heat, you know what take him up on the offer, call his bluff. I think thats significant he said that. Move quickly and put something in front of him to sign chblt we are looking at a scenario where we might see a state of the union, what, a couple of weeks away where that go can stand on the podium and tell that he was able to get a dream act compromise passed. Wouldnt that be something. Incredible. Yeah, it is incredible. Anna, laura, i appreciate all your voices. Coming up joint News Conference at the white house, President Trump will be taking questions. Well bring that to you. Also ahead swift reversal, the Trump Administration canceling plans for offshore drilling off the florida coast, coming after a strong objection from the governor. Other states are objecting. The question is will they get the same treatment. And school board outrage. Have you seen this video . Teacher handcuffed and an arrested after challenging whether the School Superintendent should have gotten a raids. All of it playing out on camera. What happened next has plenty of people stunned. We have Climate Policies about making Transportation System different. So no tesla are getting hit in norway. Thats good. Electrical cars. We do that too. Thank you. Thank you everybody. Thank you very much. Thanks everyone. Thank you very much, everybody. Mr. President , will you discuss thank you, jackie. Just a little quick window there on the greeting that was the Prime Minister of norway visiting the president of the United States today. Just a reminder holding the joint News Conference coming up next hour there at the white house. The president will be taking questions. And on a day when immigration has really come up. Well see if he makes news on that. Or even what we are about to talk about here. President trump already getting major backlash against massive offshore drilling plan. But now the white house is being accused of politics at play after florida was suddenly taken off that list. Just last week the Trump Administration announced the largest single expansion of offshore drilling targeted areas would include alaska, the pacific and atlantic coasts and the gulf of mexico. But after a meeting tuesday between Florida Republican governor rick scott and the u. S. Interior ryan zinke, florida became exempt because of massive florida tourism. That had more of an out cry. Governor of louisiana possibly asking for his own exemption. But the Trump Administration is denying any kind of politics at play. So with me now, South Carolina congressman mark sanford whose district rests right there along that beautiful carolina atlantic coastline. Congressman, a pleasure to have you on. Welcome. My pleasure. Lets get do this. You are opposed to this. Your spoerks women says South Carolina has requested a meeting with the department sent. What do you want to have come out of this . Well, whats good for the goose is good for the gander. And if we are going to exempt florida based on the secretary of zinke put it unusually high degree of tourism reliance, well then the same certainly ought to exist for South Carolina. If you look at the multi billion dollar industry that exists along the coast of South Carolina, whether hilton head or charlton or myrtle beach, tremendous tourism that ultimately drives our economy. If you use it for justification for florida it certainly applies to South Carolina as well. Before we get into tourism, congressman, lets talk politics. We node florida is it red state and President Trump and rick scott are close. They have a relationship that predates trump being in the white house. Straight up, is this politics at play . Well, you would hate to imagine so. But is it . If it looks meals and feels that way because the president ran on draining the swamp. If this is not assign of politics as usual, i dont know what is. You have florida which has president ial consequence contests, all of a you had is enbeing exempted in a way that other states might not be that might be smaller in population count. I would also say this it smacks of what we never want to see in politics, is it only self serving . You cant say i want to see an oil rig from maralago as i look out from palm beach, but its okay in South Carolina. Hear you loud and clear. Congressman sanford on that the white house the latest statement from interior Department Spokes women, no politics behind it. Site florida tourism as factor. I have been to coastal South Carolina. I know it is all about tourism. So why isnt the white house counting your states tourism as a factor here . That i dont know. And well hopefully get to the bottom of this. Ive had conversations in the past with secretary szinke. He was a classmate in congress. Ill continue to have conversations chb conversations. Its now going to get amped up with the goff nerp. The governor just asterisk scott does, governor has the ear of the president based on things that happened politically m that happened in South Carolina. So i think youll see something happen here. But more importantly the politics of whats going on, there is a principle at play. And thats the principle of home rule, of federalism. That the government is most local governs best. As republicans weve said we believe in that. That not all decisions need to be made in washington. That many should be made at home. And when you have the absolute clarity that we have seen for instance on the coast of South Carolina with every municipality, every hamlet and every town along the coast doing form formal declarations by their city council and mayor saying we dont want to see offshore here, not so much for what it means offshore, but on shore as the way our coast develops and impact on tourism and environment and others. That voice ought to be listened to. So Lindsey Graham, senator South Carolina hes been on the record most recently saying safe offshore drilling creates jobs, and let the people of South Carolina decide on this. And Lindsey Graham now ha huge trump critic has been throwing lavish praise on the president for anything and everything. Congressman sanford, what is behind Lindsey Grahams evolution . Again, the idea of ever trying to get into some other persons mind is not a place that im going to go. So Lindsey Graham is a political survive or. He does well. And you know im not going to try to guess as to his motivations. Other than that, hes doing what he believes best on a given day in advancing the ball of legislation that he contends with there on the senate side. Okay. Ill take it. Congressman mark sanford appreciate it. Thanks. Coming up next on cnn, a teacher put in handcuffs after speaking out on superintendent pay raise. Shocking video. And why some of the Board Members are saying this. Dont wait until february. Walk into a Jackson Hewitt, day or night, and you could get up to 3200. So why wait . You could get up to 3200 with a nofee refund advance. Go to Jackson Hewitt today. A teacher is shocked that a School Superintendent was slated to get a raise while hard working teachers and cafeteria workers and others like herself are missing out on that. So what does she do . Stood up and spoke out at a school board meeting. Instead of being hurt, she was ultimately handcuffed and the whole thing was captured on video. Watch this. You are making our job even more difficult. Teacher Deyshia Hargrave spoke up. Her issue the superintendents new contract. Superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, i feel like its a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, or any other support staff we have. She received a warning. It was Public Comments only. Not a questionandanswer session. Although board officials were answering her questions. After being called on a second time, thats when a city marshall stepped in. Excuse me. Is it against policy to stay in . Do not. Ill go. This is the most disgraceful thing. Hargrave left the meeting but in the hallway. What are you doing . Can you explain this . Stop resisting. I am not resisting. You just pushed me to the floor. I am way smaller than you. Superintendent telling katc no charges were filed against the teacher. Its unclear whether the Deputy Marshall acting on his own accord or called on her to have her removed. Her removal did not go unnoticed. The way this happened tonight and the way females are treated. Come on. Terrible. I have never seen a man removed from this room. I have never. I have never seen a man removed from this room. Right. That teacher was booked into jail and released on bond soon after. But at least one member of the school board is defending her treatment. She was interrupting the board meeting. She wouldnt allow that to happen in her classroom. Board member recognized and thats when they reacted. Let me bring in our panel. Angela rye, what was that . What was that, brooke . I mean, its uncalled for. And all i can think of is what ive been saying since the 2016 election, frankly, and that is what is it coming to . How are folks who are paid by taxpayer dollars, are elected by the people in some instances, and School Districts all over the county, how do you get to a point that you dont answer to the people . This is a teacher who is saying we know that we are overworked and under paid and we just want to know why there is room in the budget for you to get a 30,000 increase. What does she do that required, like criminal treatment . What did she do . She literally just asked a question. And in fact the clip that you showed has her making a statement. She is sharing her opinion. And they can decide to respond or not. But nothing about that officers conduct was okay. Yeah. You know, rachel there was a woman in the piece who said ive never seen a man dragged out of here in this particular parish. And i also am wondering in the last however months would she have said that, would she felt she could speak up unless everything thats been fwog on, you know . I absolutely flts that too. And you know she was a woman speaking up. And you heard the gentleman defending the action saying she was interrupting. You know, the crazy thing about it is that she was completely in order. She had been called on. She was speaking. She was recognized. Within the process governing that process. But his perception was interruption. How dare she question and challenge. Yet she kept her composure entire time until she was handcuffed. Right. I wanted to talk to you, switching gears off of this louisiana teacher about mark walled berg and Michelle Williams and this movie had to do the reshoots because of kevin spacey and crihristopher plumme and incredible difference. Yeah, coming in the mid of this me too movement. Two of hollywoods biggest stars went back to reshoot because kevin spacey after our story broke was recast. So they go back to reshoot these scenes. Like ten days worth of reshoots. Yeah, in november. And turns out Mark Wahlberg reportedly 1. 5 million to shoot this and Michelle Williams made less than 1 of that. Comes down to, brooke, 1,000 reportedly that comes up to about 80 a day. Now, they are both ironically represented by the same talent agency. We are not sure who negotiated the contracts. We are not saying mark knew that he was making more or michelle knew what was going on. But scott saying we are not taking a lot of money. Nobody was getting paid so we are not sure again why this happened the way that it did. We dont have all the details this is a report from usa today. We reached out to their reps and havent heard back. But the pay gap adds to the conversation. Michelle williams Golden Globes winner. That is how this is going to be parsed out and people are going to say well he had a better agent. Enough. There should not be such a divergence between the market rate for what a man does and the market rate for what a woman does. Like thats the pay gap is a different pay structure for men and women doing the same thing. This is a very clear and very instructive example of that. It is ironic that no one has commented yet and this has erupted in the last few hours on social media coming to her defense. She hasnt said anything and its strange mark hasnt either. I think at the Golden Globes bringing up the e host in her dream job, up for negotiation, found out made double, said dueses to e, because thats not okay. Angela wro ange angela rye, to you, how do you do this . What we make is taboo, we dont talk about it, but it seems like we should be. We absolutely should be, brooke. And part of the only way that well ever solve the gender pay gap is by being transparent with what we make. Whether for me what i make as a cnn commentator or my contracts with clients when i get to do special projects with other networks, im absolutely about sharing what i make so it can empower other people, not just here, but other networks, not just with my clients but with other spaces of political strategists doing the work, speaking engagements, what are we getting paid to do this work. And how are you justifying those disparities. It is time out for that. Our voices matter just as much as men. Our voices matter just as much as the majority if we are black and brown people or Indigenous People in this country or asian folks. It all matters. And we have to be accountable for it. Its time for all of it. Time is up for this mess. Thats where i am. Angela rye, thank you so much. Thank you so much, ladies, all of you. Next, here on cnn, south korea president is creating President Trump for getting north korea to the negotiating table. And President Trump just weighed in next on the talks. Im mark and i quit smoking with chantix. I tried, um, cold turkey. I tried the patches. I was tired and i was fed up. I wanted to try something different. Along with support, Chantix Varenicline is proven to help people quit smoking. Chantix reduced my urge to smoke. Compared to the nicotine patch, chantix helped significantly more people quit smoking. When you try to quit smoking, with or without chantix, you may have nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Some people had changes in behavior or thinking, aggression, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts or actions with chantix. Serious side effects may include seizures, new or worse heart or blood vessel problems, sleepwalking or allergic and skin reactions which can be lifethreatening. Stop chantix and get help right away if you have any of these. Tell your Healthcare Provider if youve had depression or other Mental Health problems. Decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. The most common side effect is nausea. Im finally free of smoking. Ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. Its so hard to believe but its all coming back me. Baby, baby, baby. All you can eat is back, baby. Applebees. To talking with north korea under the right circumstances. A potential step towards resolving the crisis. This comes as south korea credits trump for this weeks landmark talks between north and south korea. First in more than two years. Here is President Trump describing his 30 minute phone call today with south koreas leader president moon. I just spoke to president moon. Hes very thankful for what weve done. They are having talks with north korea. Well see how that happens. He felt that the original, that the initial talk was extremely good, had a lot of good comment. It was so reported today, that we were without us our attitude who knows if that would happen. Hope it will lead to success for the world. Here is the leader of south korea lavishing praise on President Trump. Translator i think President Trump made a huge contribution to make ibt korean talks happen. Id like to express my gratitude. Ana amanpir always a treat getting you. What do you make of the fact that president moon is heaping so much praise . First and foremost, this is good news that the president s of north and south korea are talking. It is obvious that strong allies are going to want to give each other credit for helping come to this place. And president moon is being very pragmatic and diplomatic. And actually pretty real in saying, yes, this united strong front that we had with the United States has potentially caused north korea to come and talk to us. So he did the right thing. He thanked his ally. President trump thanked president moon. And what are they are doing is not just being nice but being pragmatic and showing north korea in a way they cannot drive a wedge between america and south korea. Thats very, very important. But also, remember, that President Trump had cast expep shuns against president moon. But now is an important moment and important to see United States and south korea together. And to hear President Trump say that United States would also have talks with north korea under the right circumstances in the right conditions, very important. Whats the risk and reward for that . There is it always a risk. The risk is the talks happen without all the requisite preposition, that they happen just to happen. That cant happen. They have to be talks with specific choreography, what they want to get to, what the finish line is. The other risk is that the United States shouldnt look at negotiations, if it ever gets to that point, as zero end game. With the north. Right. For us to come up some sort of compromise, doesnt mean north korea has to lose. Because right now we are in ha situation where because of decades of inability to get this situation coraled, north korea, for all intents and purposes is a flejly Nuclear Power with dozens of Nuclear Devices with very advanced Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and potential to reach areas of the United States. They cannot allow this to stand. Cannot allow north korea to threaten it. How do you get to a point where you can have a deal that has to be winwin, just like the iran deal was . The United States tried for a long time to think that it could just beat iran into submission. It couldnt. But stutough sanctions brought m to the table but that was important. But the negotiation has to be winwin. And for some people its unattainable. So well see how it goes if it gets to that point. Now its important that at least north and south are talking. Thank you very much. Youre welcome. Minutes from now President Trump will take questions with the press conference with Prime Minister of norway. Well take it live here on cnn coming up. keyboard sounds dear freshpet, tank was overweight and had no energy. Until freshpet. Put the puppy back in my dog. It was an extraordinarily meeting with moments. The president allowing the media to hang out during northbound gases with lawmakers over immigration in the dreamers. And we went over to the raw tape and found the key back and forth that illustrated your government branches in action. Check it out. This was an idea i had last week. Sitting with some of our great republican senators and we all agreed on everything. And i say lets have the same meeting but lets add the democrats. First President Trump sets the stage by touting familiar themes. We have greatly stiffened as you know and they are not giving you best names, people you dont want. Democrats draw their line politely. Thanks, mr. President for inviting us. We are all honored to be here. But careful to drop a key word. Combination of the future of daca as well as border security. Then a rare occurrence. The president tells the media stay a while. So maybe the press can stay for a little while. And they did. A long while. Then another rare moment. Talk of compromise. Apparently no matter what. If they come to me with things im not in love with, ill do it. He then gets praise from a former critic. I dont think i see a chance to get it done right now because of you. You have created an opportunity and you need to close the deal. President then takes it a step further. If we do this properly, daca, you are not so far away from comprehensive Immigration Reform. The democrat whip doesnt seem to like that line of thinking. There are some things that you are proposing that are going to be very controversial and will be impediment to agreement. But youll negotiate those things. Youll sit down and say listen we cant agree here, well give you half of that. Are we seeing the art of the deal in action . I dont care. Ill take all the heat off the democrats and republicans. My whole life has been heat. But then the key moment. Id like to ask the question what about a clean daca bill now. I have no problem. I this i thats basically what tick is saying. We are going to come up with daca, do daca, and then start immediately on the phase 2 which would be comprehensive. Wow wow wow. Mr. President , you into he had to be clear though. I think what senator feinstein is asking here, when we talk about daca, we dont want to be back here two years later. You have to have security as the secretary would tell you. I think thats what shes saying. No, i think shes saying something different. Then a serious idea from the president that gets some laughs.
