Around . Well, it might be a pretty strong word. Im not maybe the most nuanced political person in the world coming from a career in business. But im pretty frustrated that all the things that have come out by the strzok and what may have been. Mueller removed strzok. Moore was demoted. So whats the evidence . Whats the evidence, then, the biases impacting this investigation whrks the very data points you are putting there actually action has been taken against those individuals . As an american citizen, im nervous and dis content that people would have those kinds of lack of impartiality and bad animus as displayed in those emails that they have gone so far as to possibly use that dossier to discredit the campaign, i think thats going beyond just having political views. Why if there is no evidence that this has in filtrated this investigation would you be calling for a purge, which is a word that, you know, an action that is more closely associated with authoritarian governments than democrat ones like the one you are a part of . I think if you have 2 bad apples like this strzok guy and orr. One was removed haand one wa demoted. De was demoted but still has a lot of authority in the other job he has. And still just lacks impartiality and is very aggressive in his views. So lets discuss now Rick Santelli is with me and former republican president ial candidate and pennsylvania senator as well. Thats a big resume there. And also shawn turner cnn and former director of National Intelligence as well. Big resume as well. So, gentlemen, welcome. Senator, you know, a member of your party calling for a purge at the fbi and the doj for a second time now. Whats your reaction to that . Yeah, well, i think a purge is in fact too strong of a word. I wouldnt use that term. But i think the general consensus among republicans is there is concern about impartiality with respect to the investigation and behavior of the fbi before the election. And there is a call, i think, not just folks looking for a purge, but looking for answers to have some sort of investigation of the fbi, to look into whether that did have some impact on either the election or on this investigation. From Text Messages from two people . Well, as you know, i mean, the person we are talking about here was a very key figure in this investigation. Both the investigation, the original investigation and the trump dossier to jump comey activities prior to the election, as well as in the investigation afterwards. So its not just some one person. Its one very key and central figure. And one that needs to be investigated. But one as my colleague Brianna Keilar kept pointing out is no longer part of this investigation . Doesnt mean tt activities prior to shouldnt be investigated. I think it was correct that director mueller did remove him from the investigation. But that doesnt mean that we cant look or shouldnt look into what happened prior to that. Shawn, does this look like another piece of a coordinated effort to undermine the u. S. Intelligence . You know, it does concern me that once again we are kind of questioning the motives of people in the intelligence community. Don, look, we need to absolutely kind of dispel with this false claim or false suggestion that people in government who have political views that line up with the left or the right are somehow incapable of doing their job in a nonbiased fashion. Now, obviously we had a couple of individuals who violated that trust by sending Text Messages. But look i spent more than two decades spending time in intelligence, and i can tell you with experience when you are concerned with protecting our country and democrat constitution, and you understand if you fail or if your agency fails youll be blamed, the last thing you are thinking about is whats best for democrats and republicans. So i think that we need to take a step back and look at it for what it is. We had a couple of individuals crossed the line, they were dealt with as they should be dealt with, but that in should in no way do the community. This doesnt mean the person they did in the position he had, he was clear, he wanted to stop donald trump fwr being elected. So the idea that we shouldnt question people in the intelligence or fbi, well, what person is beyond question . With all do respect we do need to question people. A purge is not focused 0en a couple of individuals. We had a congressman. Agreed. Who acknowledges that he comes from a world of business so he may not have the advantage of full knowledge when it comes to understanding the commitment and dedication of people in government. But a purge is focused on the entire agency, and its too far. I agree. You identify the individuals and deal with them, and thats what mueller has said. Senator, let me ask you this. So the house and senate are both doing investigations, right . Yes. And they are both, everyone there has a political leaning. Do you think they cant conduct fair investigations when they will tell you they are democrat or a republican . Do you think they would hand their cell phones over to let people look at Text Messages between them and another colleague . Do you think that would be fair . I think its different when you are in the political context. The answer is i would hope that the house and senate can conduct fair investigations. But i dont think anybody questions that if you are a democrat, you are going to look a lot harder at republicans and viceversa. That politics doesnt enter into it. And shouldnt, no, probably shouldnt. But does it . Well, yes, of course it does so some degree. But the evidence will lead where the evidence will lead. But you have majority and minority reports, and why, they look at it and spin it differently. That shouldnt come to the case when the people are assigned to do these nonpartisan investigations. Do you Say Something in text message that you wouldnt say in a public space . Yes, but again you are talking about someone who is responsible. Im not saying they will carry that in their personal life. I say things with my friends that i would not say on television. Doesnt mean thats my view, sometimes im just having la conversation with people. Doesnt mean that im bias. It doesnt mean that you are bias. Its different when you are musing whether someone is fit for office. This is before they were part of the investigation. This was during the election. Doesnt matter. I mean, he was involved with the dossier. He was involved with a whole bunch of things looking into lt election that director comey was involved with. So it was involved with that. And he was expressing opinions about the fitness of at that time candidate trump for office. No, i think those are legitimate reasons. Did you read the specific messages . Because the specific messages were to insurance dentscidents president has done, like commenting on genocide. Did you think it was appropriate for the candidate to be commenting on this . Obviously. No. But there were more do you support the president of the United States . I do support the president. But you thought it was inappropriate for him to make that comment. So what is wrong with someone saying that in the text message . Again, im not the person charged with the responsibility of doing nonpartisan investigation into whether this person was conducting activities that were criminal in nature. And don i think its important to point out the person that was charged has been dealt with. The question here is what else do we want bob mueller to do . He did the right thing. When he was presented with information that he had someone on his team who was not behaving inappropriate manner, he dealt with that individual in hawaii that any of us would have dealt with an individual who was not performing as he should. So at this point Everything Else that we are kind of talking about now suggests that because he dealt with that situation, because its past, that there must necessarily be Something Else that he needs to deal with and no evidence to support that. If you are looking for a suggestion what bob mueller could do, there are i think 15 attorneys on the case, and the vast majority of them have actually fairly clear records of alliances with the Democrat Party, number one. Number two, there are a couple of them very high profile in their aggressiveness toward republicans and conservatives. So if you wanted an investigation that was going to be accepted in a bipartisan way, then you wouldnt go out and pick people that have clear records of affiliation with one side or the other. Nine of the attorneys why democratic donors, not vast majority. Nine of the 15. And there are other people as well. 9 of 15 of the attorneys. And attorneys takes oaths as well to abide by the law and to be nonpartisan. I understand. But you cant separate yourself and what you believe from the investigation. Very hard to do that. You come in with a certain point of view. Lets just, this idea that you can compartmentalize everything, fine, then why dont you do that and have someone to have a different point of view. But when you see all one point of view, you have a legitimate reason to question if the majority of people that have been appointed as staff attorneys are of one particular point of view, you maybe wander whether there is a sense of, bob mueller to try to have impartial investigation of the facts. Don, by that logic we have to take a step back and take a look at every sitting judge in this community. Because we have all political leanings one way or the other. So the if the underlying idea here is you can simply not step into a role and do your job that is impartial and unbiased, that there is no where that is safe. The idea here is you bring people together who may have different views, but that those people can leave those views they door, and they can go in and do their job. And i can tell you that people in government, look, we are a reflection of society, so there are people in government who struggle to do that sometimes. But the vast majority of people understand that the mission that you have is so big, so significant, so important, that when you allow political views to come into that mission, then you putting this country at risk and a lot of things that matter to the american people. I couldnt agree. One final point. I agree with what you said. But why not have someone on the other side . Im being told the vast majority of the fbi are conservatives, rick. Well, im not talking about this investigation and those are leading. Not talking about the fbi. This investigation. Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Shawn turner and Rick Santelli. President obama is opening up about his life after the white house. One on one interview with his pal the newly engaged prince harry. This was obamas first interview since leaving office. He met with harry in september but the interview just aired today on the bbc. Obama talked about having more time on his hands, but he also appreciated about how leaders should use social media responsibly. The question i think really has to do with how do we harness this technology in a way that allows a multiplicity of voices, allows a diversity of views, but doesnt lead to a bulkization of our society, but rather continues to promote ways of finding common ground. And im not sure government can legislate that. But what i do believe is that all of us in leadership have to find ways in which we can recreate a common space on the internet. One of the dangers of the internet is that people can have entirely different realities. They can be just cocooned in information that reenforces their current biases. What a difference a year makes, right. Now with me is rebecca bird cnn political analyst and correspondent for the hill. So listen, amy, im going to start with you first. He never mentions donald trump by name, but is there any doubt who hes talking about . This is something he did throughout his presidency. I covered him when he was up against mitt romney. You never heard him jab mitt romney until it mattered until the very end. But he kept it kind of closely held and wasnt taking a jab, he was, everyone knew he was, but he was very polite about it. Rebecca, do you believe hes talking about the current president . You know, don, what is your priced me with these potential veiled jabs at President Trump, which you can interpret it either way, was that president obama had multiple opportunities in this interview to take jabs at President Trump. Prince harry asked him about inauguration day, how he was feeling at that moment, and some other issues as well and president obama didnt bite and take that bait. I think that was deliberate attempt to stay above the fray. And we have seen this from his in his post presidency in general and focus on the big issues hes going to be focusing his toengs on in terms of shaping policy and moving forward. When i said what a difference a year makes, the styles couldnt be more different. The two men also got a bit of time to work in a rapid fire q a. Watch this. How are you doing . Well right now. Titanic . Titanic. Suits or the good wife . Suits, obviously. Great. Great answer. Cigarettes or gum . Gum now baby. White house or Bucking Ham Palace . White house because it looks like that would take a long time to row. A lot of upkeep. King or queen . The queen. Of course he had to say the queen. What do you think of those answers . Of course. It was fun they both agreed suits is better show than good wife. Of course markle prince harry fiancee is appearing on. Just some fun light hearted answers. And you can see there have been reports they have developed a friendship. And you can see that in their rapport that they share very fun and lighthearted. Which leads me to the next question which president if any of the two would get invited to harrys wedding . I think rebecca is right. They have a rapport and friendship. President obama goes sort of way back with this family. He had this little meeting with Prince William and kate and hes met the queen. And so i think he and harry get along very well. So i think he might score an invite. I would think he would. But he later defleeted when ask deflected and said we havent decided, that that was pretty strategic and diplomatic, dont you think . Oh, yeah. Pushing it off. Definitely. And something our president obama did as well. He wasnt going after President Trump. He was keeping it very polite. Very political, if you will. Something that we are not seeing from the current president. Lets play it and talk about it more. We share the same kind of mindset outlook on the charitable sector, on foundations, and mainly on the youth of today, young people of this world are incredibly inspirational. Enough to invite him to your wedding . I dont know about that. We havent put the invites all the guest list together yet. So who knows whether hell be invited or not. Well leave that with a surprise. Pretty quick on his feet. Harry interviewed before he was engaged but just aired. Well, certainly he wouldnt want to create an International Incident within weeks of getting engaged. But you have to wonder what the trump tweet would look like if obamas invited and president was not. About time person of the year, you know, i wouldnt want to be invited, and i wouldnt want to attend, Something Like that. Yeah. Well see. Thank you both. Thank you. Good to see both of you. Up next, can President Trump build bridges with democrats after politically divided year is bipartisan a possibility in 2018 . Also with the new years eve just days away, why thousands of homeless are scrambling, homeowners i should say, before the new law tax law goes into effect . Well tell you why back in ha moment. Ll of these germans in my tree. I decided to have my dna tested through ancestry dna. The big surprise was were not german at all. 52 of my dna comes from scotland and ireland. So, i traded in my lederhosen for a kilt. Ancestry has many paths to discovering your story. Get started for free at ancestry. Com. The president has a mighty ambitious new years eve goal building bridges with democrats. You heard me wants to work with democrats on bipartisan bill by renovating highways. It was a campaign he promised to introduce 1 trillion after moving into the white house. That did not happen. And the president was not buddy buddy with dems. Lets talk with cnn politics reporter. Dan, what are the biggest obstacles for a bipartisan infrastructure deal . Hey, don, biggest issues is the structure what hes going to propose and the politics of trump. The structure is something democrats havent gotten behind in the past. What President Trump wants to do is spend about 200 billion on infrastructure plan that they hope will in senwill. Supported a 1 million during his campaign infrastructure. Right now is the politics. Right now President Trump is historically unpopular in first year that makes it unlikely democrats will get behind him and give him ha win. This is increasingly ha issue during midterm years. Many will be up in 2018, including states that President Trump won. Its unlikely with the president so unpopular theyll go along with this infrastructure plan because its difficult for them politically. Base of the Democrat Party is very against trump right now. And that means that any democrat running for reelection this year is going to have to do the same. So you are in west palm beach, traveling with the president , understand he played another round of golf today. Cnn got video of the president playing golf for the last few days. But i understand Something Different happened today. What was it . You know, our job down here is to cover the president to tell our viewers what is he doing on daily basis. Over the last few days weve gotten video of the president golfing at nearby golf club here in west palm beach. Break in the hedges. President doesnt really and his staff doesnt tell us when he is golfing. We have taken to going outside the golf course and filming him has he gofls through break in hedges near the club. Today a big white box truck parked in front trying to obscure our shot of President Trump golfing. It is important to give video as the president does these things. And goes to something larger, tried to object score the fact that President Trump golfs, according to our count 8 seven times as president. This was a man who ran for president and criticized barack obama regularly golfing during his presidency. But that hasnt continued in the trump presidency. Regularly vitsded the golf courses hes owned. And white house aides has been hesitant to say hes golfing. And the box truck is another example of the white house trying to obscure. We tried to confirm was this their truck we havent gotten many responses back so far, don. I believe the word is hypocrisy, dan, because he criticized the former president so much. For those who may be criticizing cnn we have video of every president playing golf, president bush, president obama, as he said thats what we do, we are there to report and show what the president does every day. Look at that, there is president obama playing golf. There is no difference. Imagine that. We got video of president obama playing golf. And its not just President Trump. Hmm. Its not a conspiracy. It is worth noting that many president s have golfed in the past. It is a favored sport of president s. No one cares, dan. Everyone, listen, we expect them to take vacations and blow off steam. But this former, this president when he was a citizen criticized the former president so much and now he is playing way more golf than the former president and now trying to hide the fact from the american people. As i said, its called hypocrisy. Thank you, dan, we appreciate it. Next time we may have to get taller cameras to get behind the box trucks. Or are there cameras that can go through. Next up from bombing syria earlier this year to the recent gains against isis and iraq, my next guest says frumt has scored some Foreign Policy wins this year. Well discuss that next. You might take something for your heart. Or joints. But do you take something for your brain. With an ingredient originally found in jellyfish, prevagen is the number one selling brainhealth supplement in drug stores nationwide. Prevagen. The name to remember. The president has received a lot of criticism this year for miss steps on a global stage. But much of that criticism centered on diplomacy and not necessarily strategy. According to a new op ed he scored some significant wins on Foreign Policy. Author of that op ed joins me now. None other than Peter Bergman and national cnn analyst joining me elise lavit. Too much holiday eggnog. No its not i had the flu and still getting over it. Elise lavit cnn global correspondent. Im a little loopy. Thank you both. I hope you had a great christmas. Peter, lets start with you. So take us through the list of trump successes he is maybe not given enough credit for. I think the first one you remember before congress, several more troops went, but most important part of that was saying the United States has a long term commitment to afghanistan. And not imposing any withdrawal dates as president obama had done in the past. That cents an important signal to the Afghan People and afghanistan neighbors. The second, president has sort of said look i was responsible for the defeat of isis. That of course is over blown. But the fact is if this took place on his watch, and two big reasons for that, one he changed were not under president obama. One, the Trump Administration allowed the kurds to be armed, captured the capitol of isis and syria. And two they changed the way in which ground commanders could do operations without going high up the chain of command. Of course, i was in iraq earlier this month, don, and people i talked to in baghdad the defeat of isis has made it better. But the fact is in afghanistan, iraq, against isis he scored some victories during his administration. Okay. So, elise, how much of it what peter outlined red lines in syria, fight against isis, can the president claim as wins as opposed to changes already set in motion by the Obama Administration . Well, red line in syria, this is something President Trump did launch those strikes against Syrian Air Base after he laid out the red line that he criticized president obama for letting assad go over in terms of using chemical weapons against the syrian people. And indeed after he lawn shds t launched the strikes, doesnt mean the whole syria policy is laid out, but they have not used chemical weapons since that strike. And i think that red line was important. I think, like peter said, this change intact particulars, look, a lot of these strategies were under president obama, but the change intact particulars, change in messages, is what helped President Trump in terms of arming the kurds and allowing commanders to have more authority on the ground. These strategies, the lo longterm goals werent that different than president obama, but the change inta tactics the were able to capitalize from president obama. I want to point out from someone who wrote an interesting op ed why President Trump isnt getting some of the credit he deserves. And he talks about the funnel cloud and rhetoric that drowns out any debate discussion of trumps Foreign Policy and what might be a success. So this bluster might be self defeating. I have another question for peter. Quickly, elise, for you, even if the decision was made by National Security team, it still happened under his watch, so he takes credit for it. Yes, thats true. I mean, look, the president is the commander in chief. A lot of other times, you know, a lot of aides are given a little more credit. But a lot of these decisions are made by the commander in chief. So President Trump and all his like to have glory is it able to claim those successes by himself. But certainly its a whole cabinet, a whole National Security team that helps him make these decisions. I think its a very fair point about droning out. Because a lot of times he steps on his own message. Exactly. Instead tweeting about other things. Peter, recent cnn poll found more than 6 in 10 americans think the u. S. Military action against isis is going well. That is the most positive assessment since u. S. Began air strikes in 2014. But just 42 approve of trumps handling of terror over all. So people are happy with isis fight. But not terrorism over all. Why is that . Well, part of it is we have had successful terrorist attacks in the United States since donald trump assumed office. Not only from jihad terrorists, one struck in manhattan with a vehicle killing 8 people but also in charlottesville, virginia. So the fact is domestic terrorism continues to it be a problem. Donald trump response to that is travel ban which i dont think really will have much effect, because the lethal terror attacks in the United States whether coming from jihadist were people in the United States already. Almost invariably american citizens or american legal residents. So that might help explain the disconnect. Isis almost gone completely. But isis has migrated to virtual realm and continues to inspire people t and other forms of terrorist in the United States, not far from the studio we are sitting, representative scalise was almost killed by an antitrump zealot attending a baseball game. So Political Violence continues despite defeat of isis in the middle east. Elise, how does the president middle east America First play into it . Whats good for america is good for the world . Look, i think in terms of America First, its what good for americans in terms of the grade deals, i think the question is whether its self defeating for america itself. Look, President Trump pulling out of the tpp, that asian trade agreement, was also to counter chinas influence in the region. So i think in terms of that, its not good for the United States. And its not good for the world. I think some of these other aspects of whats good for america, i dont necessarily think, you know, that everybody would say that pulling out of the Climate Change agreement. Pulling out of these other trade agreements are good for america or the world. So i think sometimes when President Trump says America First, thats good for america. He might mean that its good for a certain section ever his base. But some of these policies i think a lot of people feel are self defeating, not only for the world but for america, which is what he says they are supposed to benefit. Elise, peter, thank you for your time. I appreciate that. Up next, it was a stunning crime, sandbag thrown in interstate bridge, smashing a windshield, and killing a man below. Now charged with murder after a sandbag thrown in an interstate overpass crashed through a windshield and struck a 22yearold man in the head later died in from his injuries. The teens are only 13 and 14 years old. Scott mcclain joins me now. All four suspects were in court. What happened . They are denying. This happened a little over a week ago. Three of them is 14 years old, someone 13, were felonies for badly injuring 22yearold byrd but byrd died from injuries on thursday. So now the charges are for murder. Byrd was in passenger seat of the car heading south on i 75 when a sandbag apparently tossed from above came crashing through the windshield according to the medical Examiners Office cause of his death was Blunt Force Trauma to his head and neck. Now the toledo blade local paper spoke to cousins and said he was father of one year old boy he was engaged. And she has no sympathy for the boys she would like to see them charged as adults but they wont do that because they dont have criminal history. And under ohio state law, don, 13yearold could not be charged as adult regardless of the circumstances. I understand they are back in Court Next Month whachlt could happen at this hearing . Yeah, so the next court date is january 4th this is the star of the trial. So these teenagers are going to remain in juvenile jail until then. Because in ohio no provision for bail for young offenders. So the maximum time they could serve in jail is up until they are 21 years old. But keep in mind because this case is in Juvenile Court s the point of Juvenile Court or the Justice System is not to throw the book at these kids. It is to rehabilitate them. So even if they were to be convicted, it is very possible that they will not serve out their entire sentence. All right. Well be reporting it. Scott mcclain, thank you appreciate that. Still ahead on cnn eight hour flight to no where, unauthorized passenger boards the jet bound for tokyo and the crew finds out four hours into this flight they have to make a ur turn back to los angeles. My doctor told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. Eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis had both and that turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Both made eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if switching to eliquis is right for you. Hi dad. No. Edont try to get up. Hi, im julie, a right at home caregiver. From godaddy in fact, 68 of people who have built their. Website using gocentral, did it in under an hour, and you can too. Build a better website in under an hour. With gocentral from godaddy. It must be the worst uturn ever, four hours into what should have been a 11hour flight from los angeles to tokyo, the pilot of flight 175 was forced to turn around when the flight discovered unauthorized passenger on board. Model chrissy teei began and he husband john legend were on board tweeti tweeting the whole thank you for taking me. While writing in part, 4 hours in this flight, we have to turn around. The mix up occurred because that unauthorized passenger ended up on brothers flight who was also traveling to tokyo. Both of the men have similar names. The airlines is apologizing to more than 200 passengers on board but stand by the pilot decision to turn back. We failed to deliver the Customer Service we strive for. During the time the flight the pilot was delivered the information. Based on the available information in flight, he made the correct decision to return to lax. So lets see if he did or not. Joining me now is it website that helps you get the most out of your air travel. Brian, hello to you. How does a person get, first of all, get on the wrong flight in the first place . You know, this is a security failure at so many different levels. This is a huge embarrassment for ana but not that uncommon, because they actually code share with united and have flights leaving around the same time from l. A. To tokyo sochlt this person who thought he was on his brothers flight somehow scanned ticket for united and probably rejected it, but the gate agent just let them board. And usually theyll catch it by counting the number of people on a plane, but somehow they got that wrong too. Maybe someone was in the bathroom. So it was multiple failures. But its not crazy to think that its happened. Why did the plane have to turn around . Why not just let the passenger off once they landed in tokyo . So it is tokyo based airline, and i think they erred on the side of being too cautious. If they bring someone to japan and dont have a visa it could cause big problems for the airlines. There was no Security Risk from what im told even though the police did meet the aircraft. I think it was the pilot saying wow we messed up here and in the over abundance of caution lets go back to lax. So of course investigators are checking this out. What happens now . I dont see anyone broke any laws . No, there were no laws broken. This is like, you know, i personally think he should have went to tokyo. The guy was supposed to be on a partner airline, they could have waived to eac other in the sky. But, yeah, i mean what happens now is ana probably 200,000 cost to them to huge around a huge jet. So, you know, i guess they were being overly cautious. But i dont think there was any actual Security Risk here. I hate long flights to begin with. I would be very upset. But sounds like the passengers handle the ordeal pretty well. Yeah. We saw some yoda jokes on twitter. Yeah. Her comments were amazing. This is due to mechanical error, its kind of crazy this was due to just a security error with the airlines. So im sure ana will be extra careful when checking boarding passes going forward. As im sure they are. And other airlines are learning from them as well. Brian kelly, the points guy, thank you, happy holidays to you. Safe travels. Im don lemon in for brooke baldwin.
