President trump is spending the first christmas of his administration in maralago. Its a special occasion for the first couple. They attended Christmas Eve services at the church where they were married. And then the couple wished the nation a Merry Christmas. Melania and i are excited to wish the entire world a very Merry Christmas. At this time of year, we see the best of america and the soul of the American People. The president , though, is also spending his holiday feuding with the fbi. He sent out a litany of tweets attacking the deputy fbi director Andrew Mccabe over the weekend. Sara murray is near maralago. Its in stark contrast because you look at that christmas address its and very festive and christmasy and then you have the attacks which are certainly donald trump but not exactly the spirit of the holiday. Reporter not exactly in the spirit of the holiday, yes. Thats a gentle way of putting it. Of course, this is President Trump and it wouldnt be a day in the life of this president without a twitter tirade and thats certainly what we saw over the weekend with him taking aim at the fbi and the media and complaining that he doesnt feel hes getting the credit he feels for his accomplishment, particularly when it comes to the economy. Now, if the white house is concerned about this, theyve certainly given no indication of it. We even saw a Top White House official defending the president saying that he has every right to be concerned, for instance, about bias in the fbi. Although insisting that he has full confidence in the fbi that he selected, christopher wray. Sara murray for us in west palm beach, florida, happy holidays to you, sara. Thank you so much for the report. Joining us now to discuss is dave jacobson, political commentator and democratic strategist and john thomas , a gop consultant. John, to you first. When you look at politics not taking a break during this holiday, what do you think about this, about these attacks on Andrew Mccabe. I think the president makes a good point. We saw on friday a member of congress revealed to fox news that he has email evidence proving that mccabe said that Hillary Clinton was going to receive an hq special. Im not sure exactly what that means but it sounds like special treatment and perhaps being given a pass. We saw peter strzok, Text Messages showing extreme bias. So i think hes right to bring this up. Look, 99. 9 of the fbi is fantastic but weve got to clean house of the people who have these conflicts. By all accounts, Andrew Mccabe is considered a professional. But you disagree with that . Well, i do. I mean, i think you see this conflict with his wife who received 600,000 in money from Terry Mcauliffe who is Hillary Clintons campaign chair. He wasnt in this last election. Youre right. But 600,000 was almost half of the Senate Campaign fund its a conflict. But you know it didnt happen during the time that mccabe was in tenure in this position. You know that . Yes, i do. But the issue was it turns the fact that he can be an impartial in this and hes con fliktded out. Like any attorneys in that situation, whether it was a year ago or five years ago rec kus themselves from the situation. Thats what he should have done means he has got to go. Dave, you react to that. Look, i think this tweet by the president is emblematic of the fact that hes the deflek for in chief. Hes trying to change the conversation away from the russia investigation that mueller is speierheading. We wouldnt be in this position in the first place had donald trump not at least allegedly obstructed justice by firing director comey. Mccabe never would have been in the position of power as acting director for the several months that he was had donald trump not let go of comey in the first place. So this is ultimately a mistake by donald trump that steve bannon even said will go down as one of the worst political mistakes in modern history. Dave, we both agree with that but when you hear about an hq special, what does that mean to you . Im not familiar with that but theres been wideranging reporting that this is an individual who has led the fbi with honor and integrity. So at the end of the day, i havent seen any wrongdoing to dispute that. And john, to that point, his reputation is a pretty stellar one. What do you say to that . Number one, hes con fliktded out because of his wife. You cant do both of those things in such a highprofile investigation, especially when a lot of people thought Hillary Clinton got a pass. So thats one thing you cant do. And number two, the email of an hk special, i cant tell you explicitly what it means but okay, youve said it three times and you havent made clear exactly what youre talking about. I do want to ask you, john, why is he doing this when, yes, he had this tax reform overhaul, which hes trump petting as a victory. Its very unpopular with voters but this is something that republicans can say, look, we said we were going to do this. We did this. We delivered. Why isnt he talking about that . I think hes doing both. Obvious lie i think he should be focusing on the positive but i think hes focusing on it because on friday, like i said, the bombshell about the hq special on fox news broke. Hes revisiting it. Thats why hes talking about it. I think hes trying to sow the seeds of discourse and at the end of the day, muddy the waters when it comes to this very toxic and radioactive russia investigation that is hovering over the white house and has been plaguing his Administration Since before the inauguration and he knows that this tax bill is extraordinarily unpopular with the American People. According to quinn knee pea jack who put out a mere 29 of the americans supported the bill. But what do you think, dave . Because when you look look, if we were talking a month ago, we might have said they didnt get a lot done in congress. But with the passage of this tax bill, you have most americans that are going to see a tax cut, middleclass americans are going to see a tax cut. Republicans have now opened up sacred anwar to liberals to oil exploration. Theyve gutted the tax penalty if you dont sign up for health care, which is like taking a sledgehammer to obamacare. Look, at the end of the day, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and this is a handout to millionaires and billionaires and wall street fat cats and big corporations. It does nothing to help hardworking families. John, you cant even tell me as a republican that this guarantees that every middleclass family across the family gets a tax cut. You know why . Because it actually raises taxes on hardworking families in california and new york and new jersey. Millions of people, who are hardworking middle class families are going to see their taxes go up. Dave, 91 of middle class americans are going to in fact see a tax cut. In terms of wage disparity, you saw Companies Like wells fargo of are their own volition raising the minimum wage to 15 an hour. That helps change that wage disparity. Dave, i just think its fascinating, that since not a single democrat voted for this bill, they are against giving middle class americans pun back in their pocket. Im happy for us campaigning on this going into midterm us because i think this saves the republicans. From middle class and hardworking families, democrats dont support giving the 1 millionaires and billionaires big, fat tax cuts. Donald trump, according to forbes magazine, which did a report, according to his 2005 tax returns, is going to get 11 million in tax breaks. Average American Families are going to get a couple thousand dollars back. When donald trump gets 11 million, thats the reality. Sounds like a lot more moreover, this does nothing in terms of meat on the bones requiring big corporations to hire more working people or to raise wages. Theres a couple companies who have come out to say, you know, like at t, were going to give everyone 1,000 bucks. Only a couple of them. John, it does nothing to require every Single Corporation who gets a permanent tax cut to hire more people or to raise wages. It does nothing to guarantee that. And dave and john, thank you so much. Im going to have you stick around and it is the American People that are going to decide if they feel that this makes a difference for them. They will speak in the end. Gentlemen, stay with me on this holiday monday. And next, cnn is going to count down the top seven moments from the first year of the Trump Presidency. Its been nearly one year since President Trump took office and by any measure, it has been a whirlwind of events. Everything from the appointment of the Supreme Court of neil gorsuch to passing tax reform. Dana bash takes a look back at some of his most memorable moments of 2017. Lets be honest, the first year of the Trump Presidency feels more like a decade because of the relentless stream of news. Here are some of the key moments of President Trumps first year in office. For candidate trump, Large Campaign crowds were the norm. But at his inauguration, this was a sore subject. One of his first president ial acts was to order his press secretary to do this. This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period. Thats something the president himself amplified while standing in front of a cia memorial to fallen heroes. We had a massive field of people. You saw that. Packed. The field was looked like a million, million and a half people. But the numbers didnt lie and the episode set an Early Trump Administration tone. Government regulation. Theres no surprise the Trump Administration effort on this was not splashy 2017 news. One, two, three. But the president withdrew hundreds of regulations with a real world impact from the safety of the products you use to the air you breathe. We have reduced unnecessary regulations to a point that this country hasnt seen in year gls. Republicans argued excess regulation hurts business and economic growth. Raise your right hand. Reporter the most lasting trump 2017 accomplishment is arguably the nomination and confirmation of neil gorsuch to the Supreme Court. I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant of the constitution and laws of this great nation. Reporter the seat was open for a year since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia and Senate Republicans refusal to consider judge merrick garland. You will go down as truly one of the best justices in the had history of the United StatesSupreme Court. Judges can disagree without being disagreeable. Getting gorsuch was a trump legacy. It is an extraordinary resume. From announcement to confirmation, this success was the most conventional trump undertaking of the year. After months of back and forth between donald trump and north koreas dictator, words like rocket man took his insults to the world stage. Defending itself or its allies. We will have no choice but to totally destroy north korea. The rhetorical cross fire continued. Rocket man is on a Suicide Mission for himself. By years end, the escalation reached new height. North korea tested its most powerful missile yet with the capacity to reach the u. S. Mainland. No discussion about Donald Trumps first year in the white house would be complete without talking about his favorite little birdie. He sent more than 2,000 tweets in 2017 alone, from the really consequential posts, like unprecedented attacks on his own partys leadership and some headscratching retweets. This antimuslim video sent by a brit convicted of hate crimes caused a diplomatic rift with the british prime minister. Plus, his claim that president Obama Wiretapped trump tower yet the one that may come back to haunt him the most, taunting fired fbi director james comey. Better hope there are no tapes of our conversations. The hands down biggest 2017 trump defeat, failure to repeal and replace obamacare. John mccains dramatic no vote sealed its fate, one that helped win control of government. That loss made President Trump and hill republicans quest for tax reform a political life or Death Mission mustpass legislation. As amended, its passed. And it worked. The people are going to be very, very happy. They are going to get tremendous, tremendous tax cuts. Whether most americans, especially working class trump voters, will see that as a win, to be determined. And finally, the most important trump moment of 2017. Firing fbi director james comey. Second, comey while investigating potential 2017 russia collusion caused a political earthquake with aftershocks still rattling the president. Well see what happens. Not the least of which comeys revelation that he kept detailed memos documenting his meetings with the president. I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. I asked him to because i thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel. Thats exactly what happened and special prosecutor Robert Muellers russia investigation was a cloud over the trumps first year of presidency which has included indictments of two former Trump Campaign officials and the guilty plea of Michael Flynn for lying to the fbi. What a year. What will 2018 bring . Buckle up. Our thanks to dana bash for that report. Joining me is john thomas, a gop consultant. The tweets, that was the sort of new thing for 2017, weve asked each of you to choose your favorite tweet from the president. Dave, you chose this one from just a few weeks ago. It says, i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the fbi. He has pled guilty to those lies t is ashamed because of his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide. We should point out the president s lawyer came out and said that he had drafted that tweet, sort of taking away the bite of the fbi part which we wondered if trump was aware of and reporting showed that he was aware of. Tell us why thats your favorite. Im not an attorney but it begs the question of whether the president essentially admitted to obstruction of justice with that tweet. We know just days after he fired director comey that he went on nbc nightly news with lester holt and had an interview saying that he fired director comey because of that, quote, russia thing. And so the fact of the matter is, you know, it begs the question of whether trump knew before he fired director comey and used that information, you know, when he fired comey or perhaps beforehand when he met with director comey and asked him to let the flynn thing go. And so i think while im not an attorney, thats the big question that i think bob mueller is investigating, is whether or not donald trump did, in fact, obstruct justice and whether or not he admitted it through that tweet. It is a good question. All right. John, you have a favorite tweet. Look, i have to point out, this is actually a tweet from 2012 but 2017 proved that rules are meant to be broken, right . And also this did become relevant again just a few weeks ago. But heres what you said. The Cocacola Company is not happy with me. Thats okay. Ill still keep drinking that garbage. Explain your bic. Trump has had a long history of tweeting about diet coke and slamming the brand while cocacola has been trying to rebrand it as being a more healthy beverage. Trump has continually trashed it and yet we saw a New York Times article that he still has an obsession with drinking up to 12 diet cokes a day. I love this president for the fact that he embraces his vices and tweets about it. And sometimes the things he says he doesnt like, he actually does like. So that is very interesting. Gentlemen, thanks so much, dave and john. I appreciate your time on this holiday. Happy new year and Merry Christmas to both of you. Thank you. Thousands still dont have power and some still dont have any water after the storm that hit back in september and some on the island are trying to make the most of the Holiday Season despite those challenges. Cnn followed one of santas helpers, also known as manny rivera, on the night before christmas as he made sure that kids who had lost everything in the storm are not forgotten. Reporter even for santa, this christmas just hasnt been the same this year. The devastation was on another level. A kid yesterday asked me to bring back his house the way it was. Before maria. Reporter as hes done for the past five years, this santa is gathering his elves to make sure the children of puerto rico know santa is still watching. Im going on my personal slay and even though maria banged it up a bit. Reporter its forced some of the same kids that he visited last year to move in with relatives in homes followed on by generators. This was hit pretty bad. Reporter other children are in homes without water and santa can relate. I dont have power. I still dont have water. And still got to fix the roof of the house. Reporter but when santa visits these children, they for goat, even if just for a moment, the challenges or concerns for the future. She said they were not just concerned about life but if santa was coming this year. Reporter for this moment, this 6yearold forgets he doesnt get to spend christmas in his own home. This is what he put on his list for santa to bring him. Hes just grateful. Reporter and this 7yearold forgets he even doubted santa finding him this year, enough proof that at least a few families on the island believe santa is real. And leyla is joining me now live from san juan. Thanks for showing us a bright light in a challenging time for the people of puerto rico. Are you getting a sense like a better idea of how long its going to be before we can say most of the island will have its power and its water back. Reporter you know, you ask any puerto rican that doesnt have power when the power will be restored and they will tell you not soon enough. If you ask the government, they will tell you and what i mean by government, i mean the puerto rican government. They say they dont have an idea of who actually has the power. But when you talk to the u. S. Army corps of engineers, they will tell you that by march, most of the people who dont have power now will have power. But those in the very remote area, the areas like where we visited last night, it could be may before they see power which is a matter of weeks before the next hurricane season. Leyla, that is just nuts when you say you ask the puerto rico rican government, they are not aware of who has or does not have the power . They dont even have an accurate picture of the problem . Rsh if you talk to the puerto rican power authority, they will tell you 70 is where they are on Power Generation but Power Generation does not equal distribution or the number of clients. And they are not giving those numbers right now, saying theres just not an accurate assessment. So to answer your question, brianna, yes, the puerto rican government, three months after Hurricane Maria struck, they cant quantify the number of homes or businesses with power. Well, leyla, thank you so much for your reporting that youve been doing for months in puerto rico. A very Merry Christmas to you and to your family there in puerto rico as well. And up next, senator john mccain. Hes applauding the Trump Administrations decision to provide antitank weapons to ukraine. Russia says it crosses the line. Should be the one to stop a war from breaking out on the Korean Peninsula as north korea is calling u. N. Sanctions a new act of wear. Joining me is kimberly dozier, executive editor of the brief. Barbara starr as well is joining me. Since 2006, we have seen round after round of sanctions. Now you have a new round of sanctions. When you look at what is in them, they seem pretty robust. Is this really anything different . Is it going to have an impact . Well, if it does, its going to be the first time in a long time, right . Exactly as you say, brianna, this time the United Nations again another round of very tough sanctions trying to close any loopholes that would allow north korea to export its currency earning capability. Thats fuel, gasoline, Industrial Equipment even telling countries that employ north korean workers they must turn around and send them back home so those earnings cannot go back into the north korean economy. But the question, of course, remains always the same. Would any of this convince kim jongun to denuclearize the peninsula, which is what the u. S. Wants, and that means proceeding ahead on his nuclear and Missile Program and there is no indication that came has any inintension of doing it at this point. They are saying that the u. S. Should open ldialogue with nort korea but the official word is that it would be, quote, a pipe dream for them to give up their weapons. What do you think about this overture from russia and if its just posturing. What russia is doing is painting the u. S. In the negative light that it is warlike, it is trying to instigate some sort of conflict with north korea and presenting moscow as the arbiter of reason. In the combined pressure on north korea can get them to take some dehe is ska la tore steps and make peace talks possible that can help us step back from what is looking like a very dangerous situation officials tell you that they are doing everything short of pulling u. S. Military dependents out of south korea and putting troops in the general region to be prepared for a strike. What would it take, barbara, for talks to get under way . You know, it seems like north koreas making very clear and you wouldnt expect them to say well jettison our Weapons Program and sit down at the table but theres been talk about what if there has been instigating this back and forth and what would it take to get to the table. Well, i think thats one of the things that nobody is too sure of at the moment. We did have this indeed pause in north koreans testing for two months and then they started up again. So was that a sign that they might be willing to take a pause. North korea has said what it wants the u. S. To stop doing is conducting military exercises in the region and training with south korea and japan. The pentagons position has always been that it would for the give up those training efforts with those key allies. So again, it becomes very hard to see who goes first and who is holding their breath until they turn blue here without some kind of progress being made. Lets talk about the russian u. S. Base op. Russia seized annex crimea getting into a sovereign country to do that. Now were hearing from a state Department Official that the u. S. Will provide antitank weapons to the ukraine. I know youve been talking to your pentagon sources and they seem pretty encouraged by this, right . Both pentagon and White House Administration sources have said what were finally doing is meeting russia on their own terms. They are arming proxies so were arming proxies. The problem is and its one of the reasons that the Obama Administration didnt arm these gre groups, russia is just over the border. They can start bringing heavier weapons to the inside so where does it end . So when you talk to Trump Administration officials, what they say is were signaling to russia that we will play by their rules and every time they do something aggressive, we will answer it back. But barbara, are officials at the pentagon worried that this could slip into escalation for escalation sake . This was the Obama Administrations worry indeed, that if you ratcheted up the military tensions on both sides on that key Eastern Front between ukraine and russia that it would escalate and i think theres a real theme emerging in National Security for 2018. You have the russian proxy wars in places like ukraine and syria. You have iran throughout the middle east and these are the key issues that President Trump is going to be facing even as he deals with north korea, what hes dealing with is the influences behind the scene, by russia and china. So you have these security threats all over and then you have the proxy states behind the security threats. All right. Barbara starr, thank you so much. Kimberly dozier, we appreciate it. She certainly made an impression in that video, but first i want you to tell me what this moment meant to you and how this went down. This moment was pretty i dont really have words for it. It was just a great moment. Me and my sister have been planning since september and it just worked out perfectly. The surprise went well and my mothers reaction was one of a kind, so it was not planned at all. So, yeah, it was great. Gwen, what were you thinking when you saw him . And it seems like you were expecting that he would be home after the holidays . Yes. I didnt really see him but i saw my sister and my sisters head on his body and all of a sudden hes moving and im like, after that i dont even know what i was thinking. I have no clue. I just went into crazy mom mode. So what were you feeling . Because it seems you just seemed overwhelmed. Thats it. I was overwhelmed. I saw him and i was overjoyed. Im so glad that i dont know how far i would have gone. It was just beholden for me to be able to touch him. We are very close. Im close with my kids. That was a god experience. It really was. Oh, hes testy. Hes always wanted me to cook. Hes a joke sistster, a prankst. Hes just a great kid. Hes just a finer blessing and i was just hes just a lot of joy in our lives. And grant, are you going to be going back or are you home for good now . Yes, maam, ill be going back to okinawa, japan. And what do you want to say to your fellow Service Members who hope philly did get home like you but even if they didnt, what do you want to say to them as they are away from family . Keep their head up and keep fighting for our country because all their families really do love them and enjoy them. I know its hard being away from home, because i was home last year and it was pretty rough, but i really do appreciate all my fellow Service Members from the navy branch. And gwen, what do you want military families to know or just people to know about military families who are enduring the holidays without Service Members, without their family members or who are so lucky like you are to have them home. To those who didnt get to have their family home, i encourage them just to continue to pray, continue to try to reach out to them, we do it via facetime and messenger so were able to see him some but that touch is totally different than just seeing him. Keep your heads up and keep in contact as much as you can and for those that are enjoying them at home, oh, god bless you. Enjoy your time. Indeed. Indeed.
