A man accused of sexual abuse of a child nearly 40 years ago could still become the next u. S. Senator. Republican candidate roy moore staying put. Refusing to leave Alabama Senate race after these bombshell allegations that the Washington Post broke. They were made by a woman named lee cor lee corfman, goes back to 1979, she was 14 years of age when she said roy moore sexually abused her. Moore totally denies this. Sent out a flurry of tweets in which you seem to ignore the fact that she voted for donald trump. So roy moore tweeted this. The Obama Clinton machines, media lapdogs lawn shld the vicious attacks against me ive ever faced. The forces of evil will lie, cheat, steal, if they believe it will shut up christian conservatives like you and me. Meantime the president is doing the reaction urging roy moore to drop out of the race if these allegations are true. But his former chief strategies steve bannon is sticking by the Senate Candidate. But its interesting, the bezos, amazon, Washington Post that dropped that dime on donald trump is the same bezos, amazon Washington Post that dropped the dime this afternoon on judge roy moore. Now is that a coincidence . Thats what i mean when i say opposition party. Right . Its purely part of the apparatus of the democratic party. They dont make any bones about it. Lets go straight to alabama to my colleague who is there live in gadsen. So from who you are talking to, are roy moore supporters despite all of this reporting out of the Washington Post sticking by him . Reporter brooke, almost to a man and woman they say they absolutely are. The big question ive been getting all day long ive gone across this city why now. Why are these allegations coming out some 40 years after the fact . Is it because these are the final few weeks of what has been a highly dramatic election . Are these women being pushed into saying this by the democrats . Are they being pushed into saying this by the Establishment Republicans . Like Mitch Mcconnell . The big question is why now . And what Everyone Wants is more proof, more corroboration. They want these women to offer some sort of proof. And thats going to be very difficult, impossible really 40 years after the fact in what really amounts to he said, she said situations. And what they keep saying is this is a man who has rooted his life, rooted his campaign and christian values, this is not a man who could do Something Like this. I spoke with a woman at a barbecue restaurant earlier today asked her if you had to vote today would you vote for roy moore. She said absolutely. I said even if you knew he had inappropriate relations with a 14 year old girl. I want to read you, if the good lord has forgiven him as a christian, i have to forgive him also. I did speak with a member of the county Republican Party here, he said moore could lose some votes but the majority will stick by him. They said they have been through fire, that is reference to repeated controversies he has been through, the famous of which getting kicked off the state Supreme Court first time for refusing to remove a monument to the ten commandments. Now, one of the votes he may lose was from a woman he met on the main street here. Up until yesterday she was a fef rent moore supporter. But the difference is she knows lee corfman who was the woman who alleged that. Now she says she doesnt know what to believe. But also says she wants more proof. Now what is clear is all of his supporters say he will definitely stay in the race and have little doubt he can win. Brooke . What matters is how alabama feels and that is. Josh, to you there, you are there in the weeds on alabama politics. Are these allegations a deal breaker for alabama voters . No. No. They are not. As shameful as that is, they are not. They are exactly what you just heard from most people in glad sten thats what you are seeing. They are going to buy into this holier than though image. He is standing his ground. That has been moores mo in entire career. Hes standing his ground over some sort of political snafu, its amazing these been able to build this over this amount of time and continue to do this year after year after year after year. And these people continue to follow him. And they are not going to bail on him. They are going to elect this man if given the opportunity. You hear it now on this show, theyll elect him. Daniel, to you, youve been on the phone, calling around all these local republican officials getting their reaction to this whole roy moore Washington Post story. And its my understanding almost every one you talked to defended him. Tell me what they told you. Every single one. They said stuff that you dont expect people to say even when you are hoping for a good quotas a reporter. I thought. Like what . Like, well, a couple of them not only defended moore and called the allegations false. But defended the conduct itself saying well it wasnt forcible rape. Other than being with someone under age, i dont know what exactly he did. Someone said, well, she just saying they kissed. She was 14. He was 32. You dont expect that. And then a couple of three of them of the five that i got on the phone said that even if the allegations were true, they would prefer, lib tarrian to this. It was really remarkable to hear. Josh, you are nodding. Are you hearing the same thing about 14 year old just kissing and it wasnt forced rape . Yes. And i used some of daniels reporting yesterday in the column i wrote for today. But when you start a sentence with, other than being under age, i mean, dont finish that sentence. You know. Thank you. Then look at what you are doing here, for gods sakes. You cannot elect this guy, especially when his opponent is the man who prosecuted people from the kkk for killing four girls with a bomb. This is who hes up against. Good versus evil cannot be more a parent in this. We may never know the truth. But i say, i just agree with you, you cant start a sentence like that, no matter what. Josh, staying with you, Roy Moore Says forces of evil are waging this war on christian values. Weve heard from his brother comparing to whats happening with the persecution of jesus christ. We heard from the Alabama State auditor comparing moore and this young woman to joseph of mary and the bible. The quoted is, mary was a teenager. Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of jesus. There is just nothing immoral or illegal here. Maybe just a little bit unusual. So bottom line, i mean, thats more and more what we are hearing, right . No, its absolutely. And first of all, they call her, her name wags the virgin mary, so maybe the analogy you are using is not proper there as the state auditor. Right. But to the larger point, if you are using the bible to justify under age Sexual Assault, pedophilia, stop doing that. Its not that hard. Yeah. I dont know who wouldnt agree with you. But, again, he says he didnt do it. He says he didnt do it. Hes not backing down from this race. And so, daniel, conservative radio host and blogger eric erikson put this out into the twitter feed, denounce roy moore is convincing more supporters that this is a coordinated hit job. Whats your reaction to that . Coordinated hit job . I know. I mean, its not rational. But i think there is a powerful feeling of victimhood among many republicans and especially evangelical conservatives who feel like the entire world from media to the hollywood to even the republican establishment is overwhelming chrissian is out to get them. And then now with these allegations, tapping into that feeling of vic tell hood and making people feel like the force is out to get me roy moore are the same forces out to get you. So i identify with you and you should vote for me. I think that could work for him again here. At the end of the day though, again i go back to we may never know the truth, right, Roy Moore Says he didnt do it. And this woman obviously story is much different. So, josh, this will never be litigated. Statute of limitations done. Elections a month away. What is an alabama voter to do . Well, you know, i think first of all, when you talk about we are never going to litigate that, thats true. But we have kind of moved past that with some of these people here. Where they are justifying it as if it is true. And their answer to a lot of this is they are considering this true and still justifying t so i think you see where a lot of those people stand. And i cannot fathom before this happened anyone selecting roy moore over doug jones. I mean i cant do it. When you compare the two and their history and what type of people that they are, obviously im coming from a different angle than a lot of voters here, but at the same time if you just look at their records over the course of their lifetimes in politics, there is no comparison between the two of them. But now you add this in and still justifying it, you know, i just they are going to do it. Theyll elect them. I know that. I know where i live. I know the sad state of affairs in this state. But i cant wrap my head around it. I dont know where weve gone here that weve reached this depth in this state among people who claim to be so good and so christian and so caring. I just dont understand it. It is a kind of thing though that these on a National Level a lot of these members of congress are going to be asked about how they feel about roy moore every single day for the next couple of weeks until this election where you are in alabama in a month. How were Michael Flynn and his son expected to carry this forcible removable, as you all describe it here, out . So, i guess just to be clear, also, our understanding is that the fbi is trying to get to the bottom of that question and trying to figure out if all of this is accurate. So the allegation is that there was this meeting where they discussed getting him out in the dead of the night and putting him on a plane and getting him out of the country t obviously through extra legal means. And our understanding is that the fbi is asking questions about these allegations and trying to figure out is this actually what they were agreeing to do. And, again, just so we are clear, because i think there were a couple of different meetings in your piece, 21 club meeting which i believe was december, so that would have been after he knew and been tapped to be this National Security adviser, correct . Right. Exactly. It was middecember which was well after the election, and a few weeks before inauguration. So given that fact, michael moore, as he would have been, you know, vetted by the white house to have this huge, huge job, if in fact this comes to light that this is true, how much trouble could Michael Flynn and potentially his son be in . I think they are both in a world of trouble. And its almost unbelievable that we are talking about this. If you have this fact pattern anywhere else i think we would be talking about a spy novel. But the idea that the man is Top Administration official under cover secreted someone away in a plane and kidnapping in the middle of the night is absolutely crazy. I think whats happening and what you are seeing. And getting millions of dollars in return. Absolutely. What you are seeing Robert Mueller is like an acupuncturist and understands where to police the needles and where they will get the most effect and where he can get the most pressure. So now hes looking at Michael Flynn and his son he knows by pushing and talking investigating this allegation into Michael Flynns son thats putting pressure on Michael Flynn. He knows when he puts pressure on Michael Flynn they move up the line. Its a lot like a pyramid. You have to build the foundationment and you work your way up by continuing to pressure, to flip people, getting people to cooperate with the investigation. Here he has enough information if these allegations bear out to clearly put the pressure on flynn. Lets back up for a second here because we know that turkey had been lobbying with Obama Administration to no avail, right, for help. Yes. And perhaps found this sympathetic ear in Michael Flynn. So how does flynns background and all of that fit into this plot, this idea . So, right, the turkish government has been trying for a long time to get this guy back to turkey. And they did try through extradition requests, didnt have enough evidence. Obama administration said they couldnt do it. So they hired other people to try to figure out is there another way we can make this happen. And mr. Flynn was someone that they had turned to to try to figure out if there is Something Else they can do this. What does this say, michael, last quell about the scope of muellers investigation and how concerned the white house should be . Well, i think they ought to be extremely concerned. Because i think you are seeing hes working his way toward the top of that pyramid. What it tells us about the scope is hes trying to at this point decide whether its in competence or complicity that you are seeing in these Administration Officials with the president himself or people in his Senior Administration team. So i think that hes expanding somewhat, but i think hes doing it in hawaii thats normal in prosecutor who is tach tigs and Robert Mueller is that. He again is looking at how he builds his case, where he exerts his pressure, and what pressure is going to get the most effect, and provide the most proof and evidence. You have this criminal investigation launched against oscar winner kevin spacey after a tv anchor said against her son. Then there is louis c. K. In this New York Times article where he masturbated in front of female colleagues. And every day brave women have been coming forward to share their voices, share their stories and today that included ali who said she was abused by a team doctor, and legendary swimmer nyad sharing her story. This is what she shared with me last hour. This was my cross to bear being sexually abused as a kid and twapt just the first time that you read about it at age 14. It was all through the high school years. Humiliated degraded. It has stayed with me. As you just said im a bad ass and i am. I walk around the world this is my planet. I own the place. Good for you. But there is a little hurt corner of that soul. The rage and the humiliation and the shame never go away. Love that she said that. Let me bring in my panel cnn entertainment reporter chloe who has been breaking a lot of these kevin spacey, divided states of women is here. And comedian Heather Macdonald in los angeles. So ladies thank you so much for being with me on this friday afternoon. But lets begin with louis c. K. And he they aather this is from. We got a huge statement from louis c. K. And his people awhile ago. He name checks these five women or four women and then one woman didnt name herself. Then he says this, these stories are true. At the time i said to myself that what i did was okay because i never showed a woman my bleep without asking first, which is also true. He goes on, but what i learned later in life too late is that when you have power over another person asking them to look at your bleep isnt a question, its a predicament for them. The power i had over these women is they admired me and i wielded that power irresponsibly. He goes on at the end after expressing remorse, i have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything i want. Ill now take a step back and take a long time to listen. Heather, as a comedian in this world, how do you take that . I love that the women came out. I appreciate that he is admitting that its true, because it is. And what is sad about this in all the cases is that of the female comic weve all heard women arent funny. And i would be the one comedian on a line up of ten guys. To have to have a male comedian come to you and say i really think you are funny, want to come up and talk comedy, oh, my gosh im so excited its louis c. K. And i admire him and you want to find out he wanted to sexually gratify himself in your presence or proposition you. Then you think oh, i guess he really didnt think i was funny ort or talented. And thats where its crushing to a woman in entertainment whose talent is their job. Then you are squelched not to talk about it. They tell you dont talk about it. Keep it out. He even said when he brought this up ha couple months ago, a female comedian, his response is i dont know why shes bringing this up in the press. Because this is the way it gets out. Thats why shes bringing it out in the press so people know the truth. And i love everyone is telling the truth. Right. No, its about the truth. Finally. And the more people that say it, its just a fact. And he was able to get away with t and one of the things that bothered me before his statement came out is on social media whatnot people were saying, well, you know, the two kme comedians have an edgy stand up act. You mean the women coming out. The female comics, just because a female is a standup and is a little more edgy with her words and out there in front of hundreds of people doesnt mean that we cannot be sexually harassed and cannot experience Sexual Misconduct. Good point. Prostitute can be raped and a female comic can be offended by a male. And we are women. And we are taught to be polite. And i believe those women were so incredibly shocked and they are like is this a bit . What is happening . And then when they share it with people, people told them dont say anything. Im sure their own team told them dont say anything. Hes very powerful. He has a lot of things going on. He doesnt want you to know that you are his enemy. So you keep it quiet until 2017 where its just this freedom. Its freedom. We can say it. Shout it out loud. And we can still work. Right. Right. And i cant believe you even had to say the last thing out loud, but we do, and its necessary. I do want to point out though, that, yes, louis c. K. Releases a lengthy statement, apologizes to people of different productions of projects that are now over and scrapped. Like movie next week coming up. Thats a lot of people. But let me point out these rumblings have been out there for a while. He was asked about them before and made comments why would he comment. He was asked to comment for the New York Times story and he did not. So we have to wonder why did it take him so long to apologize. Why didnt he try to get out in front of this story when he knew the New York Times story was coming out . Why did it take him so long . Then there is it also the questions about who knew that this behavior was going on for so long, brooke . Because, again, big names, like roseanne bar, and others have commented about allegations of sexual miss conduct by him before. I want you to jump in on all this but move the conversation to we mention in the lead all these different men who have been in trouble for various reasons. Do you feel like the consequences, we were having this conversation before, do you feel the consequences are different politics ver vus hollywo versus hollywood . Well, today, we see alabama not only standing with someone accused of being a pedophile, but one saying we should sue the women who are accusing him because they are telling the truth and they are letting a pedophile out in the open. It shows how far we are in politics. And also how far we were only months ago in hollywood. I mean, this is it happening really really fast. And women have always spoken their truth, but there have not always been the consequence s there. And what i think is so telling about the louis c. K. Statement is he didnt realize that what he was doing was wrong or thats his sort of claim. Okay. But im not buying that at all. Right. But there are so many men who think that what they are doing is totally fine because there have been no consequences and no one to tell them you cant do that, and if you do you are going to lose your career. Women used to lose their careers when they called out the men who harmed them. Now its the opposite. Ill say that i do believe change is coming. Because when you look at how sony has replaced kevin spacey with Christopher Plummer in upcoming movie and cutting him out of the movie and spending millions to do so. And netflix to cut ties with louis c. K. In 24 hours and kevin spacey. They are setting a standard we wont stand for it and its not okay. To replace those specials with female comedians. Im sure heather would be all about that. But heather, i want to come back to you in l. A. But first here at cnn weve been having this conversation on my shows and other shows. And last night we had the huge town hall on Sexual Assault, and one of Harvey Weinstein accusers spoke out about how difficult it is to come forward. Here she was. There is shame with speaking out. And i think i think part of the process in moving forward is to try to alleviate that shame. I think women who have a story and need to speak out can look at the media right now. I dont know how its going to be in the future, but right now it seems to be that the media is a powerful tool in getting justice and for these perpetrators to get consequences. We see every day, you know, kevin spacey being scrubbed from a scott movie. We see agents being fired. Executives being fired. Just based on allegations. Of course, there is investigations to be followed through. But the media is a powerful tool. So heather, to you, the media is a powerful tool. The media can be this vessel to help be the catalyst for change in terms of starting this conversation and having consequences. But where does it go from here . What does change look like . Well, for me, a year ago i played audio of the owner of podcast one where i had a podcast, norm padist sexually harassed me when i was doing a bra ad, he said can itouch your breasts . I left that company which he made it difficult. I started my own podcast and eventually played the audio which he knew he was being taped. He got a Crisis Management team. He squelched the story. But ive been since banned from ever being a guest on any podcast one show. But i put all my energy into my own. And what is great that is in this world we live in everyone can have their own show. We are taking back the power. You are not going to put me on your show, no problem. So if nobody wants to hire him louis c. K. Again in blockbuster movies, the people who still love him can listen to his podcast. But i think its great, speaking up and telling the truth is the biggest part about big a comedian, so maybe louis c. K. Will have a great one hour about what a gross pig he was for 20 years. Who knows, and also tw regard to that i need to say obviously thats your story and cnn hasnt told that story. And we havent heard from norm, perhaps we will now. There are articles. I no he there were. I just feel like i needed to pop that in. Oh, sure. But heather, thank you so much. And chloe analyst i appreciate all of you and your voices keep speaking up. Senate republicans unveiled details of their plan to overhaul the tax plan one week after the house colleagues released their own legislation. And obviously the listen they are up against the deadline if they want to deliver on getting compromise on putting a bill to the press by christmas. How do they compare . Explain to us the big head line pieces senate versus house. Well, this was a week of big progress in that the house and the senate each unveiled their tax reform proposal but each sort of the key point here, right, house has own plan, senate has own plan. And as you said they are somehow have to reconcile the two plans. So a couple of things how the two plans differ in key important areas. The number of tach brackets house plan has four, senate plan has seven. This issue has been hugely important. The state and local Tax Deductions whether those will stay in the tax reform bills. In the house plan it is repealed. But in the senate plan, im sorry in the senate plan it is repealed. But in the house plan it is repealed, however, the property tax break remains in place. So as you can tell, they are very complicated issues here. As far as the estate tax goes, house plan repeals that tax. The senate plan keeps it in place. And then the finally the mortgage Interest Deduction in the house plan it is capped. But in the senate plan that is kept in place. So a lot of sort of differences here. And as you know, brooke, the issue of tax reform is already so complicated, so the fact that those areas are areas where the house and Senate Already have differences, that is going to be really problematic. Can they bridge the divide . That is what they are hoping to do house wants to pass their own plan and senate as well. And at some point they will come together. Politically speaking the pressure is very immense, comes from the president himself, comes from leadership. They really want to get something done before the and of this year. And when they saw how the elections played out this week, a lot of members are looking at the results and saying, look, if we cant see we had one victory, one accomplishment before the end of the year, we are going to head into an Election Year without a lot to show for what we have been doing in congress. I think the political calculation is going to be well some members vote for something that is not perfect. And while other members say i cant vote for something that is not good for my constituents. And all of a sudden you hear this person at this worst moment. They may be a father, they may be a mother, and then what we look for is something that brings them back to reality. Just trying to calm this guy down. Reporter thats why zimmerman says he handpicks the unit, only choosing negotiators who have experienced pain. So i interviewed this guy and go, what makes you want to be a Hostage Negotiator . He turns around, looks at me and starts crying. He said my son is autistic. Ive had to handcuff my own son four times. Done. If you can do that, you can do anything. Reporter last summer, zimmerman found himself talking to this man as he tried to climb trump tower with suction cups. We started talking to the kid. He responded a little bit. Thank god that Emergency Servic detective reached out and grabbed him. Reporter on this call, a man barricaded himself inside his apartment. He has taken his girlfriend hostage. For our safety, we were kept a familiar below where negotiators and tactical teams worked. Hes got a real violent history. Our victim is in there. Weve got to get the victim out. Reporter after more than an hour of talking, detectives made the arrest. The mans girlfriend was found safe inside. At the end of the day, it all comes up to human life.
