Jobs. And jobs is one of the primary reasons im standing here today as your president. And i will never, ever disappoint you. Believe me. I will not disappoint you. I campaigned in the promise that i will do everything in my power to bring those jobs back into america. We wanted to make much easier, it has to be much easy to manufacture in our country and much harder to leave. I dont Want Companies leaving our country. Making their product, selling it back, no tax, no nothing, firing everybody in our country. Were not letting that happen anymore, folks. Believe me. There will be a very substantial penalty to be paid when they fire their people and move to another country. Make the product and think they will sell it back over what will soon be a very, very strong border. It will be a lot different. Its going to be a lot different. Youve heard me say it before, and i will say it again. From now on, its going to be America First. While the president is applauding boeing for keeping jobs in the United States, live pictures im being told of the president. Is he still at the boeing plant or is this air force one . So many planes. Maybeers just checking out the new dreamliner. Who knows. It is a dreamliner. Thank you. He is having a tougher than expected time filling one of the top jobs of his inner circle, National Security adviser, which has been vacant after Michael Flynn gave his resignation this week. First to Jason Carroll there in South Carolina following the president. I mean, you felt it. You were in the crowd. I heard, you know, huge support for him. The whole America First. Mantra buy american, hire american. It does well for him. Reporter it really did. In many ways, brooke, this reminded me of a Campaign Speech we heard in fact, when we were in South Carolina almost a year ago for the primary. He thanked South Carolina for giving him that win. Thanked now governor, then lieutenant governor, henry mcmaster. Remember nikki haley supported senator marco rubio. Much thanks to give out here, thanking the boeing folks. Talk building a promise he made on the campaign to make it America First. Brenda mcmanus said she slept in her car overnight to see the president , the president who got off the 78710. She said he felt as though he did well talk building jobs. I asked her about that press conference yesterday. She said, look, im a diehard republican. I like when he talks about jobs. I dont like it when he tweets so much. Brooke . Jason, thank you. This is one of those venues that reminds me of Campaign Rallies you went to so many of with the back drop of the plane, mega rally, crowds. I have a couple more i want to bring into this conversation. Cnn political comment airport, ana navarro, andre bower, and the associate editor of the financial times. So welcome to all of you. You and i were chatting as we see the pictures of the president. Boeing, in your book, you wrote about the dreamliner and the supply chain. Lets just be on balance. On the one hand, this is awesome for america, in South Carolina, in jobs. But it is not as awesome perhaps if you dig a little deeper. Well, its very mixed. Thats the truth about the manufacturing story and the American Economy in general. Boeing 787 is one of the most complex supply chains ever known to aviation. How so . There are dozens and dozens of countries where the parts are being made. If you think about the proposed import tariff, that would hurt boeing, who gets so much of its supply chain overseas if you think about getting taxed every time it comes into the u. S. The president is being savvy riding a trend that has been happening in u. S. Manufacturing since 2010. Jobs have been coming back to the u. S. For a lot of Different Reasons. Think about whats happening in the south china seas. You dont want to bring a lot of parts in and out from there. You think about consumers wanting products faster, wanting them nearer to them. All of that is supporting a trend that the president is taking credit for but actually was already happening beforehand. That said, there is a lot the administration can do to help. I think cutting regulations, creating an environment where manufacturing can flourish would be a great thing. This is South Carolina, your home state. How did he do . Hes right down the street from my house seven miles. This is where i grew up. He did a great job. This is the one that really unites americans and makes you feel good about our country and opportunities. South carolina has been very blessed especially in the manufacturing sector. As a matter of fact, boeing had a vote whether to unionize. Overwhelmingly, they voted it down. Theyre happy with the way theyre being treated. They are excited how it is changing your community. We have so many folks moving into our area. It is expanding and growing. For him to hit this message home. I heard you talk about the tariffs. Hopefully boeing will look more and more hiring companies within the state of South Carolina or at least the country to get the parts made at home as he eases taxes and regulations and tries to create new opportunities for manufacturing all over our country. Heres what im wondering, ana navarro. We listened to the entire press conference which you said was a phenomenal performance. He baited us. He said congratulations. He wants to do it again. Today is reminiscent of the airplane hangar rallies. Is this how the president gets his mojo back . What we saw is dr. Jeckyll, mr. Hyde. Yesterday he was all over the place. Today he was focused on the relevant subject matter in front of him. He actually sounded president ial. It might be the first or second time in 29 days he sounds president ial. He didnt talk about the Electoral College vote. He did talk about winning South Carolina in a landslide. But he didnt talk about the 3 or 5 million illegal aliens voting. He didnt talk about fake news. He actually stuck to message. He stuck to script. He read the tell prompter, and he did very well. I would tell the people in the white house, instead of building a wall between mexico and us, build a wall around the white house and do not let donald trump in. On the road is where hes happiest. He has been couped up without melania, without friends, obsessing over don lemon at cnn and stewing like a caged lion. Let the guy loose. Im getting ana a 2020 trump sticker for the back of her car. Dont go crazy. I think everyone is exactly right. I thought he was in fine form today. That was his crowd. Those were his themes. Yeah. I think he was on message. He had that phrase, new american future. He talked about America First and winning. Youre going to get sick of winning because we will winning so much. I think this was a good look for him. I think you will see a similar donald trump tomorrow in florida. This is what he needs. He needs that energy. Kellyanne conway spoke of this. Reading the papers and naval gazing too much about himself, the chaos thats around him. Even though he denies the chaos. This is a good look for him. The key still for him is how does this donald translate into governing in terms of what needs to get done. Lets talk about that. More substance on what we just mentioned. Let me just be precise in your reporting. We know he turned down the flynn job, National Security adviser job. A friend says it is because the white house seems so chaotic. The white house says, according to a estimatstatement committins family first. Is what happened with harwood, flynn, does that negate all of what he tried to accomplish yesterday, do you think . Lets face it. The majority of what happened to him the past four weeks hasnt been good. The one bright spot is neil gorsuch. Yes. The leaking from his own staffers at times and giving a portrait of a man in over his head with people around him in fighting, looking for control, looking to put themselves in positions so they can be in control. That was apparently a control of harwood. This idea of whether or not he could bring his own team in. The last four weeks was an advertisement of people who might want to work in the white house. We know there are these Cabinet Department positionings that havent been filled. This is a picture of the environment and so far it hasnt been good for people looking to work in the white house. Andre, let me just ask you this. Because of what happened with haar ward. Very much in play for nsa is are three others. He would drop people through, everyone would take a look at who might be the ag, secretary of state. Is this an example sort of floating a trial balloon publicly on twitter . It could be quite possibly. Thats a good suggestion. We ought to go back to the situation so many folks unbelievably qualified to help us in so many avenues are looking and going tkoeupdo i wa give up my personal privacy and go into a paycut. When you look at tillerson, for him to make that sacrifice to come to government work, its a big sacrifice. But at the same time, what an honor. Youre working for the president , the administration. Well, no question. I give you that. But a lot of people arent willing to guys when you see what you get drug through in the United States congress and what some of these folks have had to expose themselves to, it is amazing we get such qualified people that are willing to make that sacrifice. Ana, what do you think . I think he is tweeting about kellogg to distract from h harward. I need to keep my eye on the ball. It is incredibly rare for somebody to turn down a president ial appointment, white house staff a appointment. Somebody like the admiral who served for 40 years, they have Public Service, that kind of conviction and vocation for Public Service in their dna. It is very strange for this to happen. And i think it does speak to am i going to be able to bring my own team. Are people going to be back stabbing me. What kind of team of leakers do i have to work with . Do i have to have authority in the white house. Why do i have to deal with this when for the first time in my life i have money and my wife is spending time with me and enjoying it. People are wondering is it worth the toil, the wear and tear and giving up what we have to go into a white house that is in chaos. What he is doing with the kellogg tweet, he is distracting us from the fact that he got turned down by the first girl he asked to the prom. From the woman who says build a wall. This final thought from you. Im going to go back to the jobs issue. In some ways thats what is crucial here. Yeah. I think thats happening, the debate were hearing now, the one part i like, the debate around fair trade. It is a good thing to be talk building that. It is good to talk about it. I would agree i have problems with many of his policies and agreed with very little of what he has done so far. But i will give him credit. Few people were talking about the fair trade debate before he, on the left to be fair, Bernie Sanders started talking about it. It is a debate we will see more of as Companies Like boeing are thinking about where they put jobs in the future. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. Andre, nia, rana and ana, thank you all so much. Its a great conversation. Thank you very much. Coming up, breaking news involving President Trumps nominee to run the epa, scott pruitt. Senator ted cruz reacting to this and more. Senate confirmed scott pruitt to head the Environmental Protection agency, an Agency Pruitt himself has sued multiple times over. They want to reign in claiming eight years of obama hurt businesses and the economy. Manu raju is up for this. On this first, we know the senate vote comes a day after the federal judge ruled the Oklahoma AttorneyGenerals Office must turn over thousands of emails relating to pruitts communications with fossil fuel companies. Whats the story there . Yeah. Thats right. This comes right after this confirmation vote happened, 5246 vote in which two democrats crossed party lines. One republican voted against mr. Pruitts nomination. He will get the job. As soon as he comes into power, thousands of emails will be released after this open records lawsuit was filed by a group trying to get information about communications with Industry Groups during his time as Oklahoma Attorney general. We dont know whats in those emails. When they do go out, i expect them to be rather controversial at a time when he has been criticized on the left and being too cozy with the industry he is now charged to regulate. This comes as donald trump is trying to fill out the rest of his government. Hes having a hard time in that area and National Security adviser. Admiral bob harward turned down Donald Trumps offer to take that position. Now he is getting pressure to name other people for that job. Including john bolden, former u. N. Ambassador who is a conservative, loved by conservative hawks, neocons. And some in the libertarian wing of the republican party. One person pushing bolden is ted cruz of texas, former campaign rival of Donald Trumps. I spoke to cruz moments ago. Heres what he said. One person i think would be very, very strong is john bo bolton. He is very well known on the hill. Republicans and democrats know john bolton well. He understands the world. He understands the threats of radical islamic terrorism. He understands the threats of an overaggressive putin. And at the same time i think he has demonstrated an understanding that we should be reluctant to use military force. We should do only when absolutely necessary. So i think there are lots of good people being considered. Someone like john bolton would be a terrific choice. Now, i asked him about those concerns about folks like rand paul of kentucky, who is furiously opposed to john bolton getting any position of the state department as he is being considered there. He said he views things differently than rand paul. It raises a question. Donald trump opposed the iraq war. John bolton would be pushed on some quarters of the republican party. A spokesperson decline to go comment whether or not he is interested in that job. Thats a possibility. The president floating possibilities on twitter. Tell me why the fbi chief is on the hill today, manu . Reporter he is holding a classified briefing with senators right now. This comes of course after the questions stemming from reports from cnn and the New York Times about those contacts between russian officials and the Trump Campaign during the time of the president ial election. Comey of course has come under a lot of criticism from democrats in particular for not discussing or disclosing any of this information. But some democrats call it explosive information about the coordination between the Trump Campaign and the russian government at that time. Expect the classified setting to get questions from Democratic Senators about that, about this issue. Now, we dont know exactly what they are discussing, because this is a classified briefing. But we will talk to the senator afterwards to see what they can disclose and whether or not comey contradicts anything President Trump said yesterday, or if anyone from his campaign talked to russian officials. Manu, incredible reporting this week. Thank you so much. Coming up next, Vice President mike pence set to arrive within germany to begin a socalled reassurance tour around europe. First to the news today, President Trump has been, and also when he was a candidate, quite critical on nato, saying not all countries are paying their fair share. With Vice President arriving, what do they want to hear from him . What assurances are the leaders looking for . Reporter they want to know the Transatlantic Alliance, nato and the economic ties between europe and the United States still exist. They want to know that President Trump isnt going to strike some kind of deal over their heads with beauty anyone russia. So its not just a message of reassurance. A real personal bridges, person to person, country to country that in a way need to be rebuilt. Damage limitation, damage control. Yes, the leaders are very keen to get that message of assurance from Vice President mike pence. They got that today as well from secretary of defense mattis. He was speaking at the conference here. Look, they want to hear this message of reassurance from pence, mattis, from tillerson. All of that. Thats great and good. But they cannot form a Strong Political alliance with the United States if their own populations look, this press conference, look at President Trump and feel alienated by it. Europes leaders will not have Political Support to have a friendship with President Trump because the populations are hearing a message that is alien to them. And that is very corrosive in this relationship. Politicians cannot go against their people. Brooke . Remember summer 16, then candidate Donald Trumps massive Campaign Rallies in airport hangars, impromptu press conferences and governor Chris Christie at his side . Those days arent behind us. You saw the press conference yesterday. Tomorrow he is hosting a Campaign Rally in florida one month after taking office and about four years until he is up for reelection. And governor christies special invitation to the white house. I want you to hear his account of the lunch the president and he shared just the other day. This is what its like to be with trump. Okay. He says theres the menu. You guys order whatever you want. And he said, chris, you and i are going to have the meatloaf. He said im telling you it is fabulous. That is eupl mask immascula its the president. The guy eats there all the time. And the meatloaf was good. This is about more than meatlo meatloaf. Spoiler alert. That was a gem of a sound bite. A long time media critic. Great to have you both o. Dylan, between the meatloaf at the white house with governor christie and the airplane hangar back drop for him a bit ago in north charleston, so the rally in melbourne tomorrow, whats going on here . Well, were less than a month into President Trumps first term. It would seem there is a lot of governoring to do. What we would see here is trump already rurbg to the campaign trail returning perhaps to a place where he has a more receptive audience. Clearly watching that hourlong press conference that he gave approximate prb, it is clear he feels defensive. He feels he is not being treated fairly by the media he feels he is not being legitimized by the media. It is easier to return to some of the atmosphere of the campaign trail. Indeed, that is something we saw president obama do. Its just we didnt see him do it less than one month into his first term. He was, you know, at this time in his first term he was going about the business of signing orders into law and of diplomacy, meeting with foreign leaders. I believe it was this time he took his first foreign trip to canada to meet him there. Basically he is running to a place where he has a more favorable audience where he doesnt have to worry about the external and internal pressure of being the president of the United States. Kellyanne conway said herself the people at these rallies and crowds, its his oxygen. Thats exactly right. David, on the media, i got this survey that popped in my in box. They call it the Mainstream Media accountability survey. It was emailed out from Trumps Campaign committee. Some of the questions, do you trust cnn to report fairly on trumps presidency . Do you believe that the media unfairly reported on President Trumps executive order temporarily restricting people spe entering our country it goes on. Why are they doing this . What are they doing with the data . Listen, brooke, i teach mass media research. I welcome this because i can use this as a midterm exam and ask students which of these are bad questions that you should never ask if you want honest data. And they can check just about every box on that form. Its astonishing the kinds of things theyre doing. They asked the questions. They introduced the concept of unfairness. The right way to ask that question would be to say how would you rate the performance of cnn . The worst way would be to say dont you think cnn is unfair . Thats the worst. But theyre in the middle. Brooke, there is a corollary between conducting those surveys to come up with your sort of alternate reality about how youre doing as president of the United States and those rallies he is holding or planning on holding. It is effectively creating a climate in which everything seems to be going well, in which he is loved. In which people hate the media and love him. It is an alternate reality. Talk about fake news. Its not real. I guess it depends which channel you tune into. It is that or it isnt. Go ahead, david. Thats exactly it. When you were talking about that, i watched that press conference and thought, he really wants to feel the love. But its like he has these demon voices in his head about the media and he just cant stop. He starts listing the accomplishments of his administration off the bat in a calm, even voice. Then he says, but the media doesnt get that. Maybe they get it but theyll never tell that story. But then he said at some point, you know, some of these reporters, reporters in general are the people i expected most in my life. It is talking out of both sides and that charming trump piece, too. Theres part of him that does part of him is a salesman. Even with jim acosta with cnn, it was as if he wanted to connect with him in some nice way. But he kept hearing this voice and saying cnn hate me, cnn is evil. And it just puts him off the rails. Anything thats reasonable, as soon as he starts talking about press performance you start going, whoa, where is this guy coming from . And i think dylan is absolutely right. Hes going back out on a rally to try to feel some love. When i watched it, i thought for some strange reason, this will make me sound like a lunatic. But i thought of standup comedy performers in concert. Richard pryor, the first time i started watching channeling voices. Trump does that when he channels voices of anchors on news channels. And he said donald trump can never get to 270. And you go, hey, this might be funny for a standup comedian, but for the president of the United States youre starting to scare me. Calm down. Im not saying hes mentally ill, but the voices he hears of his enemies. He wants to hear the voices of the crowd roaring and saying youre great, donald, out this weekend. Of course you want to hear the applause. Of course you do. Im not shrink. I dont know about you. We cant climb into his head. We dont know what the voices sound like. I dont know if i want to know what the voices sound like. Point duly taken. I was talk to go april ryan and she said he seemed happy after the one yesterday. And there could be more. Here he was in charleston just before getting on boeing. Never heard that said by a politician. Ive been doing well with the f35 also. Cutting prices. But were doing very well. Its a great plane. Were cutting prices. Saving a lot of money. If the price doesnt come down enough, we would. They are now putting a stealth component on it. The f35 is a great plane. We have a lot of money. Over 700 million off the lockheed plane. Thats just for a small order. As you know, we have a big one. It was out of control. Now its very much in control. Were very happy about it. I will say we will save billions and billions of dollars. Many billions of dollars. A great product from both boeing and lockheed. Thank you. Okay. So there he goes. I know the audio not the best in the world. I heard, you know, were going to save billions of dollars this was said as he was leaving. The crowd chanting usa, usa. This is a huge piece of how he won. He toured the boeing plant in north charleston, South Carolina a while ago for the 78710 dreamliner passenger plane. He met with the ceo. But the protest movement that started the day after trumps inauguration has followed him to South Carolina. Lots of people have a lot of Different Reasons for being upset.
