My staff will begin immediate construction of a border wall. [ applause ] so badly needed. You folks know how badly needed as a help but very badly needed. This will also help mexico by deterring illegal immigration from Central America and disrupting Violent Cartel net works. As ive said repeatedly we are going to get the bad ones out, the criminals and the drug deals and gangs and gang members and cartel leaders. The day is over when they can stay in our country and wreak havoc, we are going to get them out an we are going to get them out fast and john kelly is going to lead that way. [ applause ] [ cheers and applause ] our order also does the following. Ends the policy of catch and release at the border. Requires other countries to take back their criminals. They will take them back. Cracks down on sanctuary cities. Empowers i. C. E. Officers to target and remove those who pose a threat to the public safety, calls for another 5,000 Border Patrol officers, calls for the tripling number of i. C. E. Officers. [ applause ] and you both do an incredible job but you need help, you need more. Creates an office of Homeland Security dedicated to supporting the victims of illegal immigrant crime. [ applause ] for years the media has largely ignored the stories of americans and lawful residents victimized my open borders. To all of those hurting out there, i repeat to you these words, we hear you, we see you, and you will never ever be ignored again. [ applause ] as i traveled the country i had a chance to get to know mothers who lost their children from problems across the border. I want to give these a voice, theyre called angel moms because theyre a voice to protect all of americas children. Their children have not died in vain believe me. [ applause ] pundits talk about how enforcing laws can separate illegal immigrant families but the families they dont talk about are the families of americans. Forever separated from the people they love. They dont talk about that ever. As your president , i have no higher duty than to protect the lives of the american people. [ applause ] first these families lost their loved ones then they endured a system that ignored them while at the same time constantly rewarding those who broke the law. For these families, its been one injustice after another, but that all turns around beginning today. [ applause ] we are joined here this afternoon by parents whose children were horribly killed by individuals living here illegally. I will now read these parents names and ask them to stand. Many have become friends of mine over the last two years and have supported me so dearly and i appreciate it. Marry anne mendoza who lost her son Police Sergeant brandon mendoza. [ applause ] fred fun drindrinber who lost hn billy, billys wife natale was also killed by an illegal immigrant by somebody who should have never ever been here. [ applause ] Laura Wilkerson who lost her 17yearold son beautiful josh. Josh was special. Where is laura. Good. Laura. Thank you, laura. [ applause ] kerry ruiz and junior who lost their young daughter felicia [ applause ] thank you, beautiful, felicia. Thank you very much. Thank you. Stevenabeck who lost his 21yearold son, grant. Thank you steven. [ applause ] and we have many others with us from remembrance and from other groups and these are incredible people that have endured so much and i just want to thank everybody for being here. Very, very special people. [ applause ] thank you. Nothing can ever make their pain go away, but i want you to know your children will not have lost their lives for no reason. They have set this incredible goal for so many. These were great young people. And they will always be remembered. Always. We will never forget them. [ applause [ applause ] and to the parent and loved ones, you kept the flame of justice alive with your activism, keep it going. And now together, we will save thousands and thousands of lives. When it comes to public safety, there is no place for politics. No republicans, no democrats, just citizens and good citizens. We want safe communities and we demand safe communities for everyone. We want respect. We want great schools. We want dignity and equality for everyone. And i will be a president , i promise you, for everyone. [ applause ] we will bridge our divisions, heal our wounds and unify our country, if we do that, work together, then there is nothing we cannot achieve as americans. The future is limitless. Good luck to our new and brilliant leader at dhs general john kelly. Thank you, god bless you and God Bless America congratulations to john. [ applause ] all right. So listening to President Trump there at the department of Homeland Security really the headline talking about his plans immediately to Start Building this border wall as promised as candidate trump lets go to lay layla can layla sant you i cant santiago. Jeff zeleny to you first, we know trump told abc he wants to Start Building in a couple of months but this has to be paid for by existing funds . Reporter it does indeed brooke and this was certainly a president ial speech outlining the principals that he campaigned on to get to this office talking about the border and introducing some family members who he talked about often through the campaign whose loved ones were involved in horrible acts of violence by undocumented immigrants in many cases here, but brooke, what the president is doing is simply stating what he hopes will be done here. He is calling for some concrete things expanding border parole agents, he said he will add some 5,000 Border Patrol officers and triple the customs officers but for the wall itself this executive order is calling for a study of that wall, and theres going to be some immediate action but this is the beginning of this, but sort of left out of that speech there is specifically how it would be paid for and brooke, were talking about billions of dollars, estimates are billions of dollars up carwards of 10 billion. So many members of his own party are apprehensive wondering how this will get paid for. Donald trump says mexico will pay for that, thats a very openended question. So this is the fulfilling of a Campaign Pledge but important to remember this is the very beginning not the end. So on that billions price tag, john, someone who has held a number of Senior Leadership roles at i. C. E. And held a billion dollars budget. How much exactly would this cost . Reporter as you said earlier, its going to cost billions of dollars. The current budget is between 5 and 6 billion annually so if you talk about tripling the i. C. E. Agents and talk about infrastructure for the wall youre easily going to get into the tens of billions of dollars so paying for that initially is going to be footed by the tax payer. Then he says ultimately mexico will reimburse the tax payers, but do you think how does he get mexico to reimburse, john . Its going to be some tricky negotiations, its going to require a number of bilateral discussions with the Mexican Government and quite frankly they need to get them to the table first and what would be a quid pro quo program, how will this ultimately save them one is one of the questions i would be asking if i were mexico. And layla, all of this happening as the mexico arriving in mexico, you said this was concerning . Reporter right, a lot of the mexicans we talked to on the street or even lawmakers say it is sort of a sign of disrespect. Let me take it one step further. Some of the lawmakers here after trumps tweet and the announcement of the signing of the executive orders are actually calling on the mexican president to cancel the meeting with President Trump next week. The delegation is there right now. That was supposed to sort of set the tone and i should also mention that yesterday the economic minister whose in d. C. Right now with the delegation said if they try to make us pay for that wall we are walking away. If they try to tax remittances into mexico as a result of doing that we will walk away so mexico taking a little bit of a different tone in the last few days Standing Firm and saying look, we are going to protect our interests here. Uhhuh. Thus to johns point how complicated and challenge any negotiation would be with mexico to say now pay us a couple billion dollars for this wall. Breaking news President Trumps says intelligence professionals have told him torture absolutely his word, absolutely works, but he conceded that he would follow the lead of his defense secretary james mattis and cia director mike pompeo, i have to read for you this is trumps verbatim quote we have to fight fire with fire. With that being said, im going with general mattis, im going with my secretary because i think pompeo is going to be phenomenal, im going with what they say but have spoke with the highest officials about does torture work, yes, absolutely the president went on to say i will rely on pompeo and mattis and my group and if they dont want to do it thats fine, if they do, i will work toward that end. I want to do within the bounds of everything legally but do i feel it works . Absolutely it works. Donald trumps words today. Let me bring in admiral donald blair, its such a timely moment with all this news. Thank you, brooke. Admiral blair, its a mix of fight fire with fire, ill go with mike pompeo but does torture work . Absolutely. Is he open to torture in. I looked carefully at this question of how do we get useful intelligence from questioning those you capture. And the scientific answer is that we do not know if torture works or not. Theres no evidence that can tell you whether using these harsh methods gets information that is true, that you otherwise would not have been able to obtain by questioning would the harsh methods so the answer is its not known and i dont know who the president talked to who told him that torture absolutely works because no one knows for sure, so if you dont know for sure whether it works or not then it seems to me you should look out for all of the toxic side effects of running those sorts of harsh interrogation methods that blow back at americans when our people are captured and i think the use of the army field interrogation manual throughout the government which was a solution which the government arrived at eight years ago is a very good one and very sensible. Whether its effective or not its illegal its banned period, that is fact. Yeah, yeah. Lets say that this review or someone inside the Administration Says these black cia prisons work, i know you cant say whether these advances techniques work or not, if he wanted to work down that path how would he even implement the return of torture . It clearly involves changing the law, changing the practice. Theres been a doctorate across the Intelligence Community and im not sure that the president s decision would be decisive in this case. Its a big question, which has to involve the leaders of those agencies. I was glad to see that the president acknowledged the role of the head of the Intelligence Community and head of secretary of intelligence and its something that should be done openly an publicly as a big National Decision because there are huge down sides in terms of our reputations if americans fall into the hands of our enemies. If roles were reversed. I come down on the side proven effective or if its a good thing to do. Admiral blair let me just move on to this, this congressional aide tells cnn one of the immigration measures that could be signed tomorrow involves the restriction on refugees and people with certain visas from countries like iraq, syria, yemen, sudan, somalia and libya, when you hear all these countries, admiral, is this a ban on muslims . I think that the reality is citizens of those countries or those who have actually been in those countries face a pretty careful vetting if they apply for a visa that comes to the united states. And it takes a long time. There are questions asked, proof has to be given to show that the purpose of the travel is legitimate, that those who areplying applying for visas arent on a list, we have a pretty good list right now based on a individual screening, i think thats much better than a blanket screening. How would you describe these superflous . How would you describe it . I would say its not necessary and in general its not good to have a blanket travel ban from other countries. Our relationships with other countries that americans do visit and who citizens do visit our country for legitimate reasons should be done on an individual basis not on some sort of ban that has no discrimination. Uhhuh. Admiral, i have one more just last question on obviously the president has the worlds attention now that he is questioning the legitimacy of our democracy claiming that millions of people voted illegally in this past historical election that he won which by the way the claims of voter fraud are just false. There is no evidence. What does that say . Whats the message thats sent to the International Community . Well, i think the International Community reacts like most americans react that we should base our decisions and our proclamations and our policies on evidence and what we agree is the truth. So making statements without having a good basis for making them i dont think is a good basis for either international or domestic policies. I understand the president has ordered an investigation. If the investigation does show that there was massive voter fraud then lets look at the evidence and draw the conclusions. Until that point, i think that there are no facts that would indicate anywhere in the neighborhood of that. I havent seen in, have you brooke . No, sir, no, sir. If we havent, then what are we talking about . And certainly intelligence when youre briefing a leader whether it be the president or anybody else youve got to bring facts you have to bring evidence, logical deductions from that evidence or else youre basing your policies on sand and so i think we need to get back to evidence and facts as the basis for sound policy. Yes. We like facts as well. Admiral dennis blair, thank you. Nice to talk with you, brooke. Back to our breaking news, Mary Tyler Moore has passed away at the age of 80, her friends and family join me next to remember her tremendous legacy. Who can turn the world on with her smile who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile well its you girl and you should know it with every glance and every Little Movement you show it love is all around no need to away it you can have a why dont you take it youre going to make it after all youre gonna make it after all and the famous toss of the cap. I cant believe it. She was 80 years old. We have the breaking news that the legendary Mary Tyler Moore has died at the age of 80. A brooklyn native. She acted, directed. Passionate in the juvenile diabetes foundation. The statement from her long time rep reads as follows today beloved icon Mary Tyler Moore passed away in the company of her friends and family, a passionate advocate for the juvenile Diabetes Research foundation, mary turned the world on with her smile. Dick, im sorry for the loss of such a wonderful woman. My goodness, just tell me a story. I will say this is awful news for everybody. It occurred to me before i came on, i dont know anyone else in show business that everybody who worked with liked. Believe me, thats a big thing and i could name some that were loathed but mary was apparently ideal to work with. She was on my show a number of times. I knew her on stage and off so to speak, i even knew her parents and she was as delightful in person of course. Comedians used to be funny looking and scraggly and comic looking and then there was this wonderful age where we had lucy, Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore and mary was not only a beauty but a funny one. If you were teaching a comedy course in a school you would have to use mary braeaking up with laughter at a funeral one that had maybe been feared but one that would be aspired as e loses it at the funeral of chuckles the clown. Where did she get it . Her father was quite a witty man and so was her mother. She certainly had the of a comic star, the diabetes, her sons suicide, alcoholism and through all of that, all of that, she was able to slap on the makeup and make people laugh and then as she said go home and put my face in the pillow and try to get to sleep. Tell me what about her last few years, dick ka vvekavet. Tell me and Mary Tyler Moores last couple of years, what was she up to . I dont know, last time i saw her she was honored at the hold players Club Downtown and she was quite bright, quite sparkling, quite healthy looking, she walked lamely and i remember thinking oh, i hope things arent getting worse for mary, and then there was those ghastly inquiry stories where they have everybody within one inch of death whether its cher or mary or whoever and luckily both of those out livlived each. But she certainly was the epitome of star quality and people would stop her on the street and just go oh, mary, we love you, i guess you could get tired of that, but not mary, she could do anything. She could act and she always said people said gee, your a comedian, how did you know you can act . Well every comedian can act, it is so much easier to act. She was one of the best and she could somehow magically turn off the funny mary so as not to march the serious film like ordinary people that she did with robert redford. Where she was rewarded with her best actress. Woman on her own breaking glass ceilings. Thankfully for film and tape we will always have her. Everyone knows the theme song. Thank you. Iconic, let me play a little more, this is Mary Tyler Moore on cnn talking about how she and dic vandyke met. Is we went through the thing and at the time she was a very serious actress and sound a little bit like catherine hep bu hepbu hepburn, if you look at the earlier episodes you will hear the darling, hello, darling. Was that instant. It seemed to be with me. We clicked right away. I loved his kindness, his humor and his dance. Everybody about him i loved and connected to. And you the same . Oh, yeah, we bounced off each other immediately and within three or four weeks she was as funny as anybody on the show. Was the pilot the first show that aired . Yes. Was it . Yeah. It was the party and we had to go out and richie was hiding. When you were here last time both of you admitted that both of you you more than she that there was more than just playing. Oh, larry. That we had a crush yeah. You were both married right . Yes. We used to break up laughing, we had a terrible time looking at each other on the set and just started to laugh. Its sexual tension and thats how you release it. Mary tyler moore with our own larry king. Coming up were going to stay on this story and talk to paul rhiner, hes the one that gave mary her big break. Well be right back. We are back with our break story, a sad story to report to you that Mary Tyler Moore has just died. She was 80 years of age surrounded by her family and husband were told of some 33 years, now with me on the phone is karl reiner who really helped give Mary Tyler Moore her very first break way back on the dick vandyke show. Thank you for joining me, im so sorry for the loss of someone you cared very deeply about. Can you take me back to when you first noticed her . Yes, i can. When we were casting the dick vandyke show we had already cast dick and we were looking for somebody to be his wife, i was i actually saw 23 Different Girls and it didnt quite work. Huh. And finally i sent for somebody in new york where she came out and she was okay but she was much too strong for dick, and he said you know who was that girl that auditioned for me to play my daughter but her nose went the wrong way . Three names and she was on a Richard Diamond show. She played a secretary all you saw were her legs and i looked it up and turned out to be Mary Tyler Moore and i called her and she was reluctant to come in because she had failed at two auditions that week, and she walked into this room and there was this beautiful starryeyed girl with long beautiful legs and she read the first line and i heard a ping in her voice and my hand became a claw, the kind of claw that those machines that pull can dy and i clawed the to of her head, took her down the head and deposited her in sheldon lens office and that was the beginning. No kidding . No kidding . I was just talking to dic dicdick cavet and he talked about her being so beautiful but also so funny, where did that come from . She was worried about that, she said i never did anything funny. She had never done anything as a matter of fact there was a scene where she cries but funny crying and she goes how do you cry funny crying . She said show me, her oh, robs and all of those were all her, she learned not learned but inside of her was a comedian that died to come out and came out in starry form. When was the last time you were in touch with her. Some black tie veevent. She looked fine but the childhood diabetes had taken away her vision and she didnt see it seems to me and she heard me voice and recognized me but it was very sad. Do you have a favorite alltime scene of Mary Tyler Moore . I do, i have a book and my favorite alltime as many peoples alltime favorite scene where wore a toupee and she comes in the office to apologize, mary was sensational trying to apologize for telling people that i was bald. As a matter of fact they colorized that show. It was on the air not too long ago and it looked sensational. What was her relationship like with dick vandyke off camera . They said if neither one had been married at the time they really loved each other, they would not allow to dampen very quickly but i both admitted they could become a couple if it were not the fact that they were both married. When we talk about female kme comedians today, think about amy schumer, what do you think she did for the amy schumers of the world and just for the success . Well, mary broke it open for a hot of people who are not only deeply talented actors, amy schumer is a force of nature, that train wreck that she did was extraordinary. No question about it it was the one of the best movies of the year. Mary could dance like nobody, though, and when she did the soft shoe. Thats how she started her career, i understand then you found her and the rest is history. Yes, history for me, history making for me. Karl reiner, thank you thank you thank you, i appreciate it. Thank you. Here is a little bit more of Mary Tyler Moore on cnn talking about how she overcame her alcohol addiction. How did you beat it . I just made up my mind to stop. No aa . Well, i went to the Betty Ford Center and got a lot of inspiration, its a cliche but somebody said if you want to get all the air out of a glass what do you do . Theres no way to do it but with fill it with Something Else and that Something Else is joy of living, reading being creative, know youre doing the right thing and that got me to thinking. Why didnt the joy of success work . I dont know. One doesnt know, does he . No. And you know with alcoholism you tend to drink because youre angry or you drink because youre sad now or you drink because youre just so happy you want to celebrate. I have a friend who says alcohol is my prozac. Yeah, yeah, but unfortunately its debilitating and prozac is not. Are you completely sober or have you reached the point where you can have a glass of wine . No, i dont do that, i dont think i can do that nor do i want to. Im completely content with food and theres a nonalcoholic wine that tasted pretty good. Any time every now and again ill think and i dont even get to the end of that fleeting sentence and ill think how funny. We just talked to karl reiner who just gave her her first big break, and now i have the legendarynewhart. Im so sorry for the passing of your friend. Will you just tell me a Mary Tyler Moore story . Oh, boy, she and grant and arthur price really created this magical place that i was lucky enough to be at. It just was it was creativity was they loved it and encouraged it. And thats what im missing right now. Along with mary, im missing that wonderful place that was Mary Tyler Moore and hill strestreet blues and st. Elsewhere. What was her role on the air . Well, her show was such a big hit that she said i would like to went to cbs and said i would like to do a show called the bob new hahart show and t said where would you like it. Her show was such a huge hit and they wanted more, just because of the quality of it and the creativity again because you were tackling everything that hadnt been attacked. For instance suzanne and i i think were the first couple on television that slept in the same bed. No kidding . It sounds weird to say today but before that everybody had twin beds going back to lucy. Yeah, yeah, and how she was this you know single successful back on her show, journalist which was breaking all kinds of glass ceilings, i know at that time. What was she like though when the cameras werent rolling . What made her laugh off set or what did she care a lot about . She cared a lot about actors. When we would go to the commissary it was like a dream. There was ededed asner, and bet white and mary protected the actors and insisted they were treated with respect, which they were. And i dont know that that exists anymore. Hmm. Hmm. Mr. New hahart when was the las time you actually saw her or talked to her . Mary called oh, about three years ago. It was mistakenly reported the papers that i was going to do a show at i think it was nick at night and so was betty and mary thought the two of us and she called and i picked up the phone and she said i want in. We have here at c nn this bi comedy of series, as we talk about Mary Tyler Moore, put into context all these funny women today. Maybe who wouldnt be here or be a center stage or packing arenas had there not been a Mary Tyler Moore, can you speak to her impact and the path she paved . You still feel, you still hear her influence today, that stunning, bob new heart, thank you, and my sincere est condolences. Thank you, brook. I enjoy your work. That means the world. Thank you. Thank you. Mary tyler moores longtime friend, producer norman leer, legendary producer norman leer joins me on the phone. Again, expressing my condolences to you. Im talking to all these incredible people who have all these stories. And i understand you have a fond memory of a trip to china with Mary Tyler Moore. Tell me that story. Well, it was three years or so before we normalized relations. We hadnt nixon hadnt normalized relations when i was asked by the chinese delegation to the United Nations to put a group of hollywood people who did the kind of things they thought i was doing and that included Mary Tyler Moore, who was married to grant tinker at that time. And they and carl and estelle, reiner and a number of others, david and his wife, i put together this group, and she was the ambassador. They knew her in china and they loved her in china the way we loved her here. And i will never forget those three weeks and that trip with mary. What was she like . Give me the details, norman leer. Well, because among the women that were on the trip, she was the best known. This was when everybody in china was wearing a mao uniform. And youd step out of a hotel and there would be 300 people around you within seconds because they hadnt seen that many caucasians at that time. And among those that they had seen, marys face was known. So, she was wonderful. She was a great woman anyway, and a wonderful personality and a real lady. So, she in a sense was the ambassador is the word. Were going to make it one, norman leer, were going to make it one. She was an ambassador. I was talking to carl reiner and bob new heart. We have every right to make it a word. I think do you. You produce some of the biggest shows of the 70s, so youre allowed. We think of all in the family and you. Let me ask, because you, sir, were ahead of your time in terms of comedy. How was she so ahead of her time as well . Well, carl was the creator of that show. So, you got to give carl his do. He was leading that pack. Mary was a glorious actress, a great comedian, and carl told me this morning. I dont know if he told you if you were talking to him this morning that he remembers her audition. Thats what we just talked about. He loved her yeah, he loved her smile and he loved her laugh and he gave her one or two words. He said, say them. She said them, and he took her immediately to see sheldon leonard. She had the role. Im in a car and ive just arrived at my destination, brook. Okay. Norman leer, i dont want to hold you. Were just having a little chat on National Television about someone legendary talking to someone legendary. But i dont want to hold you up. So, if you need to go, ill let you go. We can talk another moment or two if you want. Can i hold onto you one more moment . Let me remind everyone, if you dont have this memorized, this was her theme song. Roll it. Who can turn the world on with her smile who can take a nothing date and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile well, its you, girl, and you should know it with each glance and every Little Movement you show it love is all around, no need to waste it youre gonna make it after all i can just hear all the people watching us and listening mouthing every word of that song. Last question, mr. Leer. What do you think of when you hear that . I think of the hat in the air. At the very end. She tosses the hat, yeah, yeah. And were all floating with that hat at the moment. Thats a perfect way to end all of this. Thank you so much, norman leer, for calling in and, of course, bob new heart and carl reiner. I like you more than bob new heart does. You made my day. Thank you very much. I am so touched. Thank you. Thank you. Bye. Thank you for being with us. Were going to continue special coverage in just a moment. Norman le le she could turn the world on with her smile. Mary tyler moore, rest in peace. The lead starts right now. She stole our hearts as laura petry on the Dick Van Dyke showed and starred as one of the first unmarried career women opt show. The world says goodbye to a remarkable actress and producer. Campaign battle cry closer to reality. President trump calling for the immediate construction of a border wall, but which side of the wall will get the bill . Plus the white house today defending President Trumps call for an investigation into something thats been debunked by experts
