Often. Mr. Trump will meet with the police and emergency crews who responded very quickly to that scene. That event in ohio is just a piece of a very busy day here this evening. The president elect will be heading to iowa for another rally on his thank you tour. Earlier today at trump tower he held multiple meetings with the former ceo of ford and this man, this is admiral james di free dees, he was in the running to become Hillary ClintonsVice President , today he confirmed he is being considered for the job of trumps secretary of state adding to a long list there. The admiral compared the two vetting processes. I think its all about service and i think that its very consistent across the partisan divide if you will on these National Security issues and thats heartening for the country. Lets begin the hour with sara murray in columbus, ohio, looking ahead to when the president elect will be meeting with the survivors. Tell us, what do you know as far as one what trump will be doing there . Reporter well, brooke, this be a different setting from the president elect. Most of the time weve seen him outside of trump tower, since he won weve seen him at these raucous victory rallies, part of his thank you tour across america. Thats where well see him later tonight but first a more somber stop in ohio. Hes expected to meet privately for some of those survivors of this attack at ohio state. Hes expected to meet with the First Responders and we havent seen the comforter in chief side of donald trump even throughout his president ial campaign. When horrific tragedies would happen he would tend to say im going to be stronger as president. Im going to find these people, im going to ensure, for instance, that a terrorist attack doesnt happen and it was almost an afterthought when he would then send out his sorry to victims in an event like this so it will be interesting to see what donald trump says and does and how he acts as consoler in chief, not a side of him were used to seeing. Were expecting him here shortly, brooke. Sara murray, thank you so much. Lets have a broader conversation with cnn political commentator mike shields who leads the republican super pac the congressional leadership fund. Also with us, cnn politics reporter eugene scott. Gentlemen, happy thursday. Lets get rolling with what sarah was just talking about in ohio state, where we havent seen this consoler in chief role and we should point out next hour im talking to one of the professors who was hit who is choosing not to be part of this because he sees trump being in columbus a pr stunt. Why do you think mr. Trump is there . This is who many people in the campaign have told us who he is behind closed doors. Weve seen him hold babies on the trail, say he loves talking to president obama. Weve seen him just reach out to other communities. Even i recall after the pulse massacre really coming out and saying that he wanted to look out for the Lgbt Community members something we dont hear a lot from our republican president ial candidates. Many voters will have a hard time holding that intention with harmful rhetoric he said as well. Well look for that message, words are important as hell be in cluck bus neolumbus next hou. Let me move to you. And the movement we have so far on the latest administration picks when you look at Health Education epa and housing and urban development or hud and you look at the lineup. Mike, do you think this is the most conservative cabinet weve ever seen . It might be and they are also as qualified. As we go back to the campaign, you had many people, Hillary Clinton and others saying donald trump isnt qualified to be president. You see the decisions hes making in his cabinet, these are tremendously qualified people. Youre seeing the president elect is willing to check his ego and bring in people that disagreed with him. Its a diverse cabinet, theres women being added, minorities, certainly a strong cabinet from the military perspective. Its interesting youre talking about being the consoler in chief, one of the ways to console people is to show them strength. To show them you mean business in keeping them safe. It may be a different style for president elect trump but thats what he advertised in the election was that he was going to be a strong leader and if you look at the people hes appointing in those National Security positions, they convey strength and that hes serious about changing our course and keeping us safe. Karen tumulty, let me bring you in. Weve been hearing from mike shields, if you want to throw the graphic up again, mike says this is a diverse cabinet. These are people who have the resumes, who have the stuff for the job but one could in terms of being uber conservative is this essentially picked by the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation and mike pence, karen . Well, i dont think these are people who necessarily come out of the sort of traditional conservative movement, sort of the william f. Buckley roots, these are people for some pretty unconventional background. You look at Something LikeLinda Mcmahon comes out of wrestling. Ben carson is certainly not somebody you would consider a conventional background for hud secretary. And also the sheer number of general, people who come from the military culture into the civilian government culture. I dont know that traditional ideological lines even begin to define what kind of Team Donald Trump is trying to build here. And what it says about how he plans to govern. You mentioned i think were up at three generals, a potential admiral. But Linda Mcmahon, let me loop back to that point. The cofounder and former ceo of World Wrestling entertainment. Wwe, we have some video just because we do, you all know where im going, with her husband brawling with trump. And we also had linda on the show recently. Roll it. Look at this look at donald trump donald trump oh, my god a hostile takeover of donald trump on mcmahon has happened at wrestlemania. Youve known mr. Trump for a little while. Think hes capable of being the president of this country . I definitely do and ive known donald for over 20 years and when ive been asked before i said let me tell you about what i know about him personally. I said hes loyal. Hes absolutely a good businessm businessman. Hes very accomplished and i think he would make a good president. And im sure she would approve of the picks. Shes been tapped to lead the Small Business administration. Eugene, to karens point, though, on the generals and the billionaires. She was the fifth woman hes chosen. What do you think that says about how he plans to govern this country. I think it communicates he plans to be unconventional and unorthodox the people he believes can be a top leader in the government. Thats not surprising, he comes from reality tv and its going to the most powerful government position in the land so im not surprise he thinks someone who headed wwe can head the Small Business association. What about his person being selected as the epa chief . Clearly he intends on rolling back regulations the epa has been issuing, especially when it comes to the coal industry and thats what he ran on. This is as advertised. One of the things that president elect trump is signaling is that he is unconventional. He ran as an unconventional candidate. Hes bringing in people like Linda Mcmahon who when her Company Started it had 13 employees and we know what the wwe is. But it is unconventional and the epa director will be someone that as advertised will work on rolling back regulations that cost this country jobs and the Obama Administration has just been in a on a bender of issuing regulations that hurt jobs and those are the very issues that the people that switched in the midwest from trump from obama to trump, the trump voters that gave him the election want him to name an epa administrator that will roll back the regulations hurting their jobs. So its unorthodox and its also as advertised. If im president obama, im also wondering my goodness, how much of my policies in my eight years will be rolled back. Then you add on the fact that we know, thank you dana bash and your reporting, about some of the conversations being had between the president and the president elect. Dana is being told that president obama has been acting as quote unquote the educator in chief, trying to change trumps mind and to move his policies to protect the obama legacy but, karen, while mr. Trump has been complimentary of president obama, said he likes him to matt lauer, receptive of his idea, the question everyone is asking is who is it that president elect trump is listening to . Well, what i have heard in my own reporting is that president obama has been trying in conversations, their initial one in particular, to sort of explain to trump how some of these policies, for instance the paris agreement, works on behalf of business, that businesses need certainty for their planning thantd this provides it. He is from what i understand he is trying to make these arguments to the president elect in sort of different terms beyond that go beyond the sort of left right partisan divide. Eugene, you have a final note on that and our reporting on how theyre communicating. One of the interesting things trump told matt lauer is one of the appointments president obama spoke very highly of so i wonder if we could see more of that going up to the top level. Still waiting to get the news on the secretary of state pick. We know manu raju just talked to senator bob corker. He says soon. Well talk to manu about that in just a second. Its important for multiple reasons, including the fact it includes a provision that could help pave the way for mr. Trumps selection as the next defense secretary. Manu raju, let me just go straight to you on the hill. Talk to me about what just happened. The house passing this bill extending government funding until april 28 of next year. That means once the senate acts and this becomes law, one of Donald Trumps first Big Decisions is how to fund the government and what programs to keep and not to keep. You mentioned that waiver, very significant because what it would do is that it would expedite the process for considering that waiver for general james mattis to serve as a top civilian post for the department. He needs that waiver because of the law preventing people who have served in the military from not taking that top civilian post if they have retired within the last seven years, he did in 2013. But were hearing democrats in the senate objecting to a separate provision in the spending bill over minors Health Insurance programs so thats not yet resolved so well see if they can finish by fridays deadline, brooke. In the meantime, a special visitor at New York University this morning, manu, where we heard from or student there is heard from the outgoing Vice President joe biden. As always, this is a man who doesnt hold back and he didnt today. This has been a very tough election. Its been ugly. Its been divisive, its been course its been disspiriting and was more a battle of personalities than it was ideas, in my view. As Vice President of the United States ive traveled over one million two hundred thousand miles traveling to meet with virtually every major head of state in the world. Ive been doing this a long time. I know ive met every single one. I think every major head of state in the last 35 years, not because im important but just because it was the jobs i had at the moment and i find myself embarrassed by the nature and the way in which this campaign was conducted. And, you know, so much for the shining city on the hill. But the fact is that i know theres a sense in the country that maybe things are worse off than they really are. Theres a sense that the country that our institutions arent working and maybe we can never get them to work. For a lot of folks it feels as if were more divided than we ever have been in our history. And that the election brought out the worst in the political system but, you know, i think this is a time to bring a little perspective. Interesting, manu, to hear from these different democrats, prominent democrats in the wake of the Hillary Clinton loss. What did you make of his words . Democrats are still struggling to explain how they lost this race. Im hearing a lot of different explanations from not communicating well enough with White Working Class voters in the rust belt states, Hillary Clinton not spending enough time in the areas as well as finger pointing on james comey and his decision to release that now infamous letter saying he would look into Hillary Clintons emails further days before the election. So a lot of soul searching on capitol hill and democrats and beyond to figure out what went wrong last month, brooke. Speaking of dems, you talked to Hillary Clintons running mate senator tim kaine. What did he have to say today . He was sharply critical of Donald Trumps choices, cabinet choices as well as his National Security advisor pick michael flynn. Listen to what he had to say. I dont mind having an epa critic, thats not my concern. Hes a Climate Science denier and that causes me great concern because if theres any agency of the federal government that virtually every decision they make is a decision based on science. What about you were on the Arms Services committee, the general theyre putting in there, what about the idea of putting three generals in the cabinet. Does that give you pause . When general flynn is trafficking in conspiracy stories that a fourth grader would find incredible suggests either that hes highly gullible or so consumed with malice that he loses his ability to judge whats fact and whats fiction. Wow. So some very, very strong words there, brooke. Of course him referring to the fake news stories that general flynn had pushed on social media saying hes not qualified for the job but the senate doesnt vote on the National Security advisor position so i asked him do you think that general flynn should step aside and he said he does not have the judgment for the job and one other thing, tim kaine has said he would not run again in 2020. I said why not . He said because i want to serve in the senate for a very long time so thats where his focus is right now, brooke. Great interviews, great gets. Love watching you run alongside members of congress. Manu raju, thank you so much. Coming up next, Donald Trumps selecton to head the epa. Depending on who you asked, you just heard from tim kaine calling him a client science denier. Hes taken some hits for conservative stance on some actions. More on what democrats say will be an all out fight for Climate Science denier scott pruitt. I want to trim my a1c. Tresiba® ready tresiba® provides powerful a1c reduction. Releases slow and steady. We just learned the president elect just sat down with hollywood megastar Leonardo Dicaprio, a longtime environmental advocate in a chat about Climate Change. The sit down coming on the same day mr. Trump tap add pierped a critic of the epa to run the epa. Were talking about scott pruitt, oklahomas attorney general. He is a Climate Change denier, a good friend of the fossil fuel industry and he has sued the epa several times over. Democrats are promising a fight over this particular nomination so lets talk that over with rene marsh, our government regulation correspondent. You have been Digging Deeper into his background. Tell me what youve learned . Weve learned scott pruitt during his time as attorney general, brooke, there have been at least 12 lawsuits that oklahoma has filed, challenging environmental protections while he was attorney general. Thats according to the Environmental Defense fund. Now, when you look at his track record, he has been at the forefront of attempting to dismantle the laws of the very agency that he will now run. Hes launched legal battles against the Obama Administrations clear power plan which essentially seeks to curb Carbon Emissions from power plants. Hes sued the epa for trying to curb methane emissions from the oil and gas industry. Those are a couple. The big picture here about what hes trying to accomplish goes beyond the environment. This philosophy of fewer environmental regulations, it really does speak to president elect trumps larger goal of economic growth, the thinking is get the regulationing out of the way which they see as a burden to businesses but the critics are saying many environmentalists are saying that all comes at a cost. Were talking about potential Health Issues as well as poor air and Water Quality brooke. Rene marsh, thank you. I want to hear from both sides. And in a bigger way but first just Scott Pruitts first statement. It was put out by the campaign after he was tapped to run the epa. This is how it reads the American People are tired of seeing billions of dollars drained from our economy due to our unnecessary epa regulations and i intend to run this agency in a way that fosters both responsible protection of environment and freedom for american businesses. So we always want to hear from both sides. I have with me johnson bridgewater, director of oklaho oklahomas sierra club and former Arkansas Attorney dustin mcdaniel, a democrat who supports trumps choice. Dustin mcdaniel, let me begin with you. You think this pick is a great idea, tell me why. Well, first of all, i know scott pruitt, hes a good man and an honorable man. He and i have differing policy positions. I was a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton but i know that scott pruitt will restore a notion of rule of law to the epa and democrats and republicans around the country alike have been concerned over the last few years about how the epa has pushed regulations without necessarily always having them rooted either in their Legal Authority or Legal Process or in sound science so a lot of litigation between the states has had to unfold over the last several years. Scott is well aware of that. Hes led some of it. I participated in some of it when i was still the democratic attorney general of arkansas. But i know scott will bring a lot of experience in finding real world solutions, we have years, years of Water Quality litigation between arkansas and oklahoma and no one thought we could resolve that, i want went to oklahoma city, met with general pruitt right after he got elected and said lets chart a new path where we work to improve our environment, improve our economy and do it together out of court and what we did was nothing short of historic and ive seen him in action and i think he would take that same experience to the epa. All right, this is from a man who knows him and has clearly worked with him. I know the executive director of the sierra club, in the meantime, said having scott pruitt in charge of the u. S. Environmental Protection Agency is like putting an or sonnist in char arsonist in charge of fighting fires. How do you feel . So two things, mr. Pruitt made it clear he doesnt think the actions of the epa are justified. He doesnt believe they should be pursuing all they have been to reverse Climate Change and regarding Climate Change itself, its been clear he doesnt see it as a threat. I want to be very clear that Climate Change is a threat, it is real, it is the greatest crisis facing not just the states and the United States but facing the world and the idea of having somebody in charge of the epa who doesnt see this as something that needs to be taken care of immediately and with all options, we see that as very troubling. Let me have dustin respond to this point. We read the National Review piece where mr. Pruitt himself wrote scientists continue to disagree about the degree and extent of Global Warming and its advanced connection to the actions of mankind. Hes a climate denier. Why is that a good idea to have him as epa chief . Well, first of all, i believe Climate Change is real, i believe its man made and i believe its the greatest threat to humanity going forward, but we elected a president who doesnt see it that way so whoever his appointments are going to be are going to reflect the ideology of the president elect and the electorate that put him in there. But do we know for a fact if he feels that way because we saw of all people al gore meeting with mr. Trump on monday. He had this Leonardo Dicaprio meeting. We know ivanka trump has been on the record talking about how climate is a passion of hers yet then he chooses someone like mr. Pruitt. I think a lot of people are left confused. I think all of those voices are going to be heard. I know scott pruitt as a man who will first of all wants to make sure we have clean air and clean water. The president elect in his statement said the core mission of the epa is clean air and clean water. What i can tell you is this is an agency that was created by Richard Nixon and right now has lost enormous support across the United States because businesses, individuals, farmers, the people in my state dont believe the epa is listening to anyone other than climate activists so whatever regulations theyre going to impose, whatever steps theyre going to take to make sure we have clean air and clean water need to be done with a legitimacy such that they garegn the support of all americans and just those who would like to see us move without the support of congress because they believe its the right thing to do. Scott will stick to his legislative mandate and rules that are imposed will be imposed according to the process with everybodys voice included at the table. Johnson, you would be one of those environmental activists. Youre listening to dustin. What do you say . Id point out the Clean Power Plan as one example, there are a great number of states that support that. This isnt a clear issue that everybody is opposed to what epa is doing. There isnt a clear mandate. The popular vote Shows Americans were willing to vote for ideas such as clean water and clean air. And, again this is something that is not simply the state versus the federal government. This needs to be dealt with in all ways possible and knowing the background and terms of the voices that att serious concerns that we need somebody who will be paying attention to the science and putting that at the top of their list rather than those of industry. Gentlemen, thank you so much. Thank you. Putz der is an outspoken critic of minimum wage increases and the Worker Protections enacted by the Obama Administration. Much more at the top of the hour. President elect trump once again using his twitter account to attack one of his critics that he claimed was a megadeal last week. Let me back up. This started when a local union leader came on cnn last night to say mr. Trump lied about how many jobs would be retained at the carrier plant. Mr. Trump got involved, what the actual number of jobs saved is 730 bargaining unit jobs, union member workers and another 70 Office SupervisoryClerical Workers from management. And what theyre doing, theyre counting in 350 some odd more that were never leaving this country at all. We had a lot of members when the word was coming out of 1100 that they thought they would have a job then they find out the next day next fripd that most likely they werent, 550 were still going to lose their jobs. Moments after chuck jones made his case on cnn, president elect trump tweeted chuck jones who is president of the united Steel Workers 1999 is has done a terrible job representing workers. No wander companies flee country. An our later he tweeted if united 1999 was any good they would have kept those jobs in indiana, spend more time working, less talking, reduce dues. Lets talk to Brian Stelter with much more on this. Having read about chuck jones today, hes getting Death Threats apparently because of this twitter back and forth because he has a flip phone but we know the president elect retweeted a 16yearold, hes going after private citizens. Is this the new normal . This is the tv twitter tv twitter cycle, brooke. Its what twitter and facebook want everybody to do. Well, the president elect is somebody who would do that. President obama was criticized for not watching cable news enough now were seeing an overcorrection, donald trump tweeting cable news like its an intelligence briefing. He gets information from other sources as well but i have to hope hes getting useful intelligence from the tv he watches. This chuck jones incident is probably the most vivid example yet because of how quickly trump responded on cnn. He may say snl is unwatchable, he may say he hates cnn but clearly hes tuned in all the time. Hes watching us. Hes watching snl and a lot of cable tv. But what about the times when he tweets false information about the millions of people who voted for Hillary Clinton . How should we as the media evolve and adapt to cover this . My show is called reliable sources. Everybody is a source so we have to figure out whats reliable. Whether we figure out whether its a company or facebook or twitter, sometimes the information will be false or misleading so our job becomes more and more and more to check, to verify, to sort it out. Its an evolution of the job of journalists. What we see from trump on twitter is the impulsiveness, the combativeness his fans loved during the campaign. Im surprise nod one around him has suggested or stopped him from tweeting impulsively but that was what was clear we were going to get before election day so its not as if you can say donald trump has changed his use of the medium going forward. Ultimately hes the boss. If the boss wants to tweet, the boss gets to tweet. Do you see that changing after january 20 . Lets see if he chooses to watch less cable news, less television, thats curious to see once hes experienced the demands of the oval office. I thought it was noteworthy that last night, robert reich, a very loud trump critic used cnn to communicate to trump. He looked into the camera and said to trump stop this. We saw Michael Moore did that on a late night show. Were seeing people kplun kate with the president elect with this medium. Even through his own aides. It does seem Kellyanne Conway in her Television Appearances is trying to get a message to get across to her boss. So that will be a fascinating subplot of the next months and probably years to see how people try to reach the president through this box were watching right now. We are in a new era. Our jobs have never been more important, Brian Stelter. Thank you. Thanks. Coming up next, any moment now president elect trump set to meet with First Responders and survivors of the Ohio State University isisinspired attack. We have will take you there live. Also ahead, we are learning that the inside of that converted warehouse in oakland, california, had not been inspected in 30 years. Despite after complaint after complaint after complaint. Details on that straight ahead. I want to take you to oakland, california, where that deadly warehouse fire claimed the lives of 36 people. Were learning the inside of that converted warehouse had not been inspected in 30 years. No inspections, in spite of numerous documented complaints. And upon hearing this revelation in oakland city councilman tells cnn he blame this is failure on a lack of communication and on widespread budget cuts that resulted in layoffs for firefighters, fire marshals, building inspectors and police officers. Robert rowe has joined me, he is a fire inspector. Robert, thank you for being here. 30 years. Is that as stunning to you as it is to so many people watching or is that more common than we realize . Its quite a stretch on years but there were a lot of buildings that go uninspected for some time. Based on the fact construction doesnt occur within buildings and permits arent pulled for certain changes of the occupancy. So some cases may not be inspected by the Building Department for some time. Tell me about what an inspection entails and how an inspection could or couldnt have prevented this . The first thing is there was a change of use in occupancy in this building. It was intended to be a warehouse and over the years it was changed into residential occupancy which would have required sprinklers and alarm systems. And then on top of that. There was a use of an ablssembl use that occurred on the night of the fire. So as you can see theres been changes made to the building outside of the eye of the local Building Department which turned into the perfect storm and here we have now a large loss of life. In the early part of the week it was clear people in this community knew people were living there, they knew people were performing, they were using it as a mixeduse sprays what do you make of him telling us it was budget cuts and firefighters were laid off. Is that does that sound right to you . Well, when you look at the size of the city of oakland and the comparison to the number of people brought on to inspect these building, its a wide gap. Its hard to cover every building. Not to take a way from the fact the buildings must be inspected. There are a lot of buildings in bad condition out there so i can see both sides of the story but i believe the owners responsibility to ensure the buildings are safe is a huge factor as well as those that run the building. The building officials and fire officials canty babysit. So with 36 lives lost, what do you think is the biggest Lesson Learned from this . Well, i think we can all walk a away with the simple fact that we need to revisit our Fire Prevention divisions, our building divisions. We need to reach out to building owners and Property Owners across the country and we need to come together and help them understand what the requirements are to have a safe structure and safe building. Robert rowe, thank you. Youre welcome. Thank you. Soon president elect donald trump set to meet with First Responders from that Ohio State University attack. Hes nominating a man by the name of Andrew Puzder to be secretary of labor. Puzder is the ceo of the company that owns kar s carls, jr. , fad chain. This coming in to cnn as we wait to see the president elect arrive on ohio to meet with survivors and First Responders of last months isisinspiring stabbing attack. Cnn politics reporter sara murray is there ahead of that visit on campus at ohio state. Sara, before we get to that, tell me about mr. Puzder. Reporter this is Donald Trumps pick to be labor secretary. You can get hell draw the ire of democrats. This is a guy whos fallen in lockstep with donald trump in terms of wanting to scale back regulations. He made no secret of the fact he would be happy to serve in Donald Trumps cabinet before he was chosen for the slot. But hes also been very critical of efforts to raise the minimum wage. So thats the kind of thing that democrats are certain to grill him on when hes on the hill and when he was asked about this before in interviews he did say he knows that states have the opportunity to raise the minimum wage. He knows they have the right to do so but if youre in a cabinet level position you can dissuade them from doing that and make the argument for why if youre andy puzder you believe it would be bad for american employers, bad for workers and bad for the economy. So a number of positions democrats wont be thrilled to hear but republicans will be happy to see this pick in some wa ways. Its another thing donald trump said he would do which is fill the appointees with people outside the norm. Since you are in columbus, tell me what we know about the president elects meeting with these survivors, members of law enforcement. Well, thats right. This will be a little bit of a different stop from Donald Trumps usual agenda. We know later on today in iowa, for instance, hell be making another stop on his victory tour and that, of course, is going to be a big raucous rally. This is going to be a very different kind of setting. He will be meeting privately with First Responders from this attack on ohio state. And it will be an opportunity for us to see what donald trump is like playing comforter in chief. In the past when horrific attacks have happen ed. He has been tough on immigrants and saying hes going to go up against isis. This will be different. It will be a chance for the American Public to see maybe a different side of the man theyve just decided to elect as president so well see how he
