Bush will not be coming back to the today show. Thank you both so much. Make sure you watch brian reliable sources sundays at 11 00 eastern here. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Its monday. Theres a lot going on. Were back with a rumbling showdown with the most powerful republican in congress and his partys nominee for president. Speaker paul ryan pretty much abandoning donald trump today, saying he wont campaign, he wont focus on and he wont advocate for Donald Trumps efforts to win the white house. For his part, donald trump has come out firing with this scorching tweet. Let me read it for you. Quote, paul ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting republican nominee. All of this after this video we spent the last six or seven minutes discussing and one of the most vicious debates in u. S. Political history. Lets go to manu raju from st. Louis. Walk me through this stunning faceoff with trump and speaker ryan. Reporter this has been going on for several months, as you recall, right after that president ial primary when donald trump became the presumptive nominee. Paul ryan decided he was not ready to endorse donald trump. They spent several weeks trying to come up with a reason why paul ryan should get behind donald trump. Eventually, he did. Paul ryan spoke at the Republican National convention. Then a few months later, donald trump said hes not ready to endorse paul ryan for his primary. That led to a back and forth. Eventually donald trump said he would endorse his reelection bid. Then in recent weeks they have been on the same page. Paul ryan has been making the case for a unified republican washington saying its a binary choice with Hillary Clinton and donald trump and thats why hes selecting donald trump. But it all changed after the release of that video. Paul ryan disinviting donald trump from that saturday event in wisconsin rally, republican event. Told him not to come to that event. Today in his private conference call, he said hes going to spend the next 29 days just campaigning and just worrying about the republican majority in congress. He does not want to defend donald trump at all. That was the message he sent to his members. That actually provoked kind of a furious response among some of the more conservative members of his conference who said, look, we need to have a president ial nominee who will win. That will help our House Republican majority. Someone said its, quote, not rocket science, mr. Speaker, thats why we should get behind donald trump. One thing, brooke, paul ryan not not revoking his endorsement of mr. Trump. Saying he still may vote for him in november but hes done defending him, done campaigning him and going to worry on the republican majority. Shows how Much Division there is behind Donald Trumps candidacy 29 days out. Not unendorsing but not having anything to do with him or supporting him in the next 29 days, thats all. Manu raju, thanks for the scoop from st. Louis. Were just getting our best indication of how that hot mike video of trumps lewd remarks are resonating with you, the voters. These are the first major poll numbers since the release of that video, this is nbc wall street journal conducted over the weekend. It shows Hillary Clinton up 11 points, double digits nationally over mr. Trump. To sara murray we go, whos with Donald Trumps campaign there in ambridge, pennsylvania. Sara, what is the Trump Campaign saying today about this speaker ryan phone call . We know he tweeted. Do we expect trump to address this at the event there . Look, brooke, that poll gives us the first sense of the magnitude of just how damaging Donald Trumps comments on that videotape could potentially be to his campaign. Granted, that was taken before last nights debate. And i do know from talking to Donald Trumps advisers, from talking to his allies, they felt even though it was a scorched earth debate, they felt like donald trump delivered a solid debate performance, he went after Hillary Clinton on a number of different areas that will make republicans happy and they felt that was the kind of debate performance that could stem the tide of republican defections. They didnt know if it would stop it completely. Publicly, theyre volunteer much saying, we dont need the establishment behind us. We have grass roots support. Obviously, they knew going into that debate he needed a solid performance. He couldnt constantly have this narrative of republicans jumping ship. Well see when he gets here today what approach he takes. If he continues to go after Hillary Clinton for things like bill clintons infidelities or focuses more on her emails, benghazi, on wikileaks, these poe d podesta emails. Make trump feels they can win back some of this support or theyre in a desperate position a few weeks out from election day. I know youre listening for all of that. Well talk again. Thank you so much in pennsylvania with trump. Let me bring in my panel. I have cara lee standing by, the White House Reporter for the wall street journal, bob cusack with us as well, editor and chief for the hill and mike shields is here, cnn political commentator and former chief of staff for the rnc. Great to see everyone. Ladies first. Cara lee, im going to come to you, beginning with, you know, we have this unfolding showdown, manu is reporting between speaker ryan and trump. You know, you have speaker ryan today telling republicans he would no longer defend his partys nominee. He wants to maintain that republican majority in congress. Thoughts . Well, i think its really hard to read paul ryans moves any other way than he sees that donald trump is not going to win the election and is trying to conserve what is most important to him, and that is maintaining republican control of the house. You do think hes given up on any kind of trump win . Its hard to see what else he would be saying. He says he needs to maintain control of the house because the house needs to be a check on a Hillary Clinton and, you know, the thing thats interesting here, were seeing the arc of the relationship between these two as manu mentioned, its more of a fuzz request relationship. Paul ryan has never been a huge fan of donald trump. They tried to work it out in the last few months but its not working. And he clearly seems to be cutting ties. He is saying some things he had already been doing for the last few months, which is focusing on house races. Its pretty remarkable coming after this debate and then on the heels of the statement i think its also a reflection of republicans are worried about what else might be out there. Is it not just this qaccess hollywood tape, what could come next . Hes trying to worry about his own turf. With speaker ryan essentially conceding Hillary Clinton might win, you have, mike, these republican congressmen and women, especially in the more conservative districts, who are furious, to use manu rajus word, about what speaker ryan is doing. They feel like hes just giving up on the supreme court, for example. What do you make of the backlash against ryan . Well, i think what youre seeing, its Pretty Simple when you stop and think about it. The competitive house races, the ones that will make a difference in winning the majority in the house are in the swing parts of the country. Theyre not in the deep red or deep blue parts of the country. Theyre not always even in the same place as the president ial election is being run. So, in a sense what speaker ryan is saying, theres a president ial race. Thats fine. The president ial race is going to be run on its own. Im going to worry about protecting the vulnerable members of my conference that are in the swing parts of the country and they need resources, they need a message and they need to defend themselves. Im going to help them do what they need to do. Thats elementary. Hes the speaker of the house. Hes not running for president. Hes letting the president ial race take on what its going to take on and hes focused on helping the house members. I think thats a wise decision. Hes thinking about downballot ahead to november 8th. Lets look back, bob, to the debate last night and to a moment that was quite simply, unprecedented. Watch. If i win i am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there has never been so many lies, so much deception. There has never been anything like it. Its just awfully good that someone with the temperament of donald trump is not in charge of the law in our country. Because youd be in jail. Secretary clinton [ cheers and abraus [. Because youd be in jail. And you hear i dont know if that was applause or screams in the audience. You have now, bob, former attorney general, eric holder, tweeting, in the usa we do not threaten to jail political opponents. Donald trump said he would. He is promising to abuse the power of office. You know, comparisons to nixonian. I hear you laugh. To a dictator. This is just wrong, is it not . It was a good line by trump. Any time hes talking about Hillary Clintons emails, i think thats a good thing for donald trump. At the same time, there are no rules in campaign and there are certainly no rules in this election cycle. The one thing donald trump needs to talk about more, i think, i dont think raising bill clinton, one of many points. I think talking about emails, talking about isis, talking about policy, is good. He has gotten distracted where hes talking about miss universe, the khan family, which is something Hillary Clinton raised. Bottom line, i think donald trump needed a gamechanger. He didnt get it last night. Following up on that, to quote some folks on tv today, he went full brightbart on the situation but did he gain voters from his performance . I dont think so. Certainly the base that likes trump loved those lines. And it shows that he wants to get the base out. But he needs a broader coalition. He needs independent voters. Polls are showing that ind pept voters thought that clinton won. The people that are still torn between these two choices, who really a lot of people i know dont want to vote for either one of them. Theyre starting to lean towards Hillary Clinton. Hes only got one more debate left. You know, cnn poll indicated Hillary Clinton won. There is one more debate. Carol lee, what did you think of Hillary Clinton . Lets put substance aside for a second and just on style, how, you know, she definitely interrupted less than, obviously, donald trump did, but she was smiling. Some perceived that as smirking. Then you had donald trump pacing around her. I keep calling it almost like a cage match. What did you think of all of that . It remind me these town hall debates always create kind of strange body language moments. You remember the obama romney debate where they were circling each other in this way. You know, she seemed to think her approach was very similar to the way she took in the first debate. She clearly thinks that worked well for her. You also saw a couple moments where donald trump was able to get under her skin a little more than he was in the first debated. She snapped back and said, you know, something to the effect of, you dont want to talk about your exploding campaigns. Youre going to say all these distracting things. And so she she was very clearly did not want to interrupt. She wanted to turn the focus back on to these people have questions. We should respond to them and take their questions and not argue with each other. And it was a really contentious debate. And she like you said, she smiled through a lot of that. Yeah. That was the debate. Then the video that came out friday. In between you then had this other piece of news, which is these bill clinton accusers. These three women who, you know, trump brought into the audience. Apparently he even he wanted them to sit with his own family in the vip box but the commissioner said, no, this is a families only area. You could still see them sitting there. Mike, is this the stunt that republicans wanted because at the end of the day nothing unifies republicans like attacking the clintons . What did you think of that spectacle . Well, look, if youre looking at the numbers of where trump needs to improve his ballot performance, hes trailing badly with women. Hes trailing badly with minorities. Thats the place he needs to go. I dont know that doing that stunt is going to help them with any of that stuff. Hes trying to point out the double standard of how clinton was treated in the press with these women and that sort of thing. Youre right, i think thats a play to the base. I dont know that it really helps benefit him and the things hes trying to achieve in the campaign. Theres been this tension within the Trump Campaign thats been pretty public between the people that are saying, let trump be trump and make his own decisions and do these things and people are saying, no, lets have him read off a teleprompter, stick to talking points and be strategic. For four weeks, donald trump was reading from a teleprompter, wasnt treating aweeting and do like this and he caught Hillary Clinton, they were tied. Logic would tell you he needs to get back to that. This sort of thing is the distraction from the strategies that will get him back into the race. Hes down 11 points in that nbc news wall street journal poll in the wake of the tape coming out this weekend. Well see how he fared with debate numbers coming into this third one this weekend in las vegas. Thank you so much. Moments from now, trump and Clinton Holding dueling rallies. This is the first time theyve held these Public Events since last nights heat debate. Well watch both of those for you. Also ahead, billionaire Warren Buffett is weighing in. What he thinks about trump last night admitted avoiding paying federal income taxes for years. S to be taken care of. Home, car, Life Insurance obviously, ohhh. But with added touches you cant get everywhere else, like claim free rewards. Or safe driving bonus checks. Even a claim satisfaction guaranteeeeeeeeeee in means Protection Plus unique extras only from an expert allstate agent. Its good to be in, good hands. We all watched the debate. I dont know highway you would characterize that. Perhaps the best part was the final question posed by one undecided voter. Everyone in that room wanted to hear the answer. My question to both of you is, regardless of the current rhetoric, would either of you name one positive thing that you respect in one another. [ applause ] mr. Trump, would you like to go first . Well, i certainly will because i think thats a very fair and important question. I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and devoted, and i think that says a lot about donald. I consider that a compliment. I will say this is about hillary. She doesnt quit. She doesnt give up. I respect that. I tell it like it is. Shes a fighter. I disagree with much of what shes fighting for. I do disagree with her judgment in many cases. But she does fight hard and she doesnt quit and she doesnt give up. I consider that to be a very good trait. How about that, two solid answers. Carl becker, you are our hero for mentioning the r word, respect. How on earth did you come up with that question . It was a pretty simplistic question, in my opinion, that needed to be answered, at least for me to work towards becoming decided. And its a question i ran past my kids before the debate, well, on saturday, and they kind of came back and kind of gave me the thumbs up on it. Well come back to whether or not you decided in a second, but did you i mean, sitting as close as you did to those two, could you feel the tension . Oh, there was definitely a palpable tension between those two, beginning with no handshakes to kind of two warriors circling each other in a ring. Two warriors circling each other. After the debate, i was glued to just watching the cutaways, you had members of both families coming up and meeting you all. Can you tell us about that, microphones off. Who talked to you and what did they say . Everyone talked to me. Chelsea immediately, i talked with her. We had a conversation that was just very interesting. And secretary clinton and mr. Trump thanked me for my question. Had a couple conversations with them. And i respect both of candidates very much. And theyre very good people. Miction off, outside of the cameras, very engaging, very nice people. You have an 18yearold daughter and a 15yearold son. When you talk to them about this election, and the language thats been used, what do you say . Well, my daughter, this is her first election. And its important for her that her vote count and she wants to see, you know, whos going to be the next leader for her for the next four years. And when she graduates college, who is that person going to be . And my son is of the same mind set. He looks to be out of school in a couple of years. Where is he going to be . Who is going to be leading this country when he is in college . To take away the rhetoric, to take away the animosity and, which of these candidates can lead this country. What about you, carl becker, you were undecided. Are you decided now . Im still undecided, brooke. Youre still undecided. Im waiting for that third debate. Yes. Im waiting for that third debate. What are you waiting for . What is that thing you need to hear . Ill know it when i hear it. I hope that my question will take the third debate into another realm of more positive, what can these candidates do to lead us for the next four to eight years as opposed to the climate weve been living the past 48 hours. And almost a year now for this election. Carl becker, thank you so much. Lets go to Hillary Clinton, first time she has spoken publicly since that debate. Now, i believe you deserve something to vote for, not just something to vote against. So last night when i got a cance, i tried to speak directly to the questions that are on peoples minds and to share my vision of what we can do together. [ crowd chanting hillary ] now, ill tell you what, donald trump spent his time attacking when he should have been apologizing. Now, there are a lot of things he should apologize for, right . And on friday the whole world heard him talking about the terrible way he treats women. And last night when he was pressed about how he behaves, he just doubled down on his excuse that its just locker room banter. Well, ill tell you what, women and men across america know that is just a really weak excuse for behaving badly and mistreating people. Now, ive got to tell you, though, weve seen this kind of behavior all through the campaign from my opponent. And, unfortunately, some people dont want to face it, but heres a man who has insulted, not just women, but africanamericans, latinos, people with disabilities, muslims, p. O. W. S and so many more. [ cheers and applause ] you know, i do hope someone follows that gentleman out and stages an intervention. He clearly has not been following this election very closely. But, hey, folks, we now know we now know who donald trump is, but the real question for us is, who are we . Right . I would argue, we he are not who he is. Here in america we are taught to, and we should, respect each other lift each other up, celebrate our diversity. Thats the country i know and love. And thats the country that this generation of young people are going to make even stronger, more open, more tolerant. I believe that we can do this. Stronger together is not just a slogan for me, its a blueprint for our future. I believe our economy should work for everyone, not just those at the top. And im closing my campaign the way i started my career, fighting for kids and families to make sure every Single Person in this country has a chance to go as far as your hard work and your talent will take you. This is the first time weve seen Hillary Clinton since the big debate last night where she says, simply, trump should have been apologizing instead of attacking. Over and over we hear this from her, trump, based upon every group of person in this country who hes offended just doesnt have the temperament to be president. Shes there, shes heading off to columbus, ohio, a little later today for a Voter Registration event. Meantime, coming up, want to talk about these three women who were sitting in that audience last night in st. Louis. Three women all bill clinton accusers. Three women who donald trump specifically had attend this debate. In fact, he wanted them to be sitting with his own family in the vip box. Wanted them front and center. Well talk more about that. Its endless shrimp at red lobster. With another new flavor you never saw coming. Grilled, glazed korean bbq shrimp. And try as much as you want of flavors like new parmesan peppercorn shrimp. Just come in before it ends. We asked people to write down the things they love to do most on these balloons. Travel with my daughter. Roller derby. Now give up half of em. Do i have to . This is a tough financial choice we could face when we retire. But, if we start saving even just 1 more of our annual income. We could keep doing all the things we love. Prudential. Now comes this, a new usa today investigation looked at more than 4,000 lawsuits trump and his various companies have faced over the years. Buried in all these lawsuits, at least 20 were trump or one of his companies accused of mistreating women. Steve riley is an Investigative Reporter with usa today, one of the journalists digging deep into these myriad trump lawsuits. Nice to have you on. You know, reading the piece, you know, the lawsuits range in severity, not are all against trump directly. Can you just tick through a couple examples where you found he was involved. Exactly. These are cases where theres allegations mr. Trump or someone at one of his companies discriminates against a female employee or ignores a Sexual Harassment complaint or participates in the harassment themselves. So, just a couple cases, there are allegations of female employees who alleged they were sexually harassed and reported that harassment to managers. And those complaints were totally ignored. Theres an employee of a florida golf resort who complained of persistent unwelcome sexual advances to a manager. The allegation is she was fired weeks later due to that complaint. Another case a fee maim worker was alleging that she was fired as a result of her pregnancy and some accommodations that had to be made for that. What about, you wrote about the beauty pageant deal called the american dream. Tell me about that one. Right. There are allegations, the case of jill hart, who alleged that mr. Trump harassed her and her partner at the time, and that case has gone on for years and was eventually settled recently. A lot of these are i should say a number of these cases have been settled, i believe. Did you all get a response from the Trump Organization or the general counsel . What did she say . We did. We reached out to the Trump Organization. They say the number of lawsuits on this topic are less than youd see at another organization of this size. Its hard to weigh that either way. There isnt exactly another organization quite like the Trump Organization out there. But thats what they say in defense of the number of cases that involve Sexual Harassment. Okay. That it is less than, thats an important perspective. Steve riley, Investigative Reporter with usa today. Thank you. Trump admits he failed to pay federal taxes for years. Trump evoked the wealthy clinton supporter during the debate last night as he agained his use of the tax code to avoid paying federal income taxes for 18 years. Heres what trump said. You have not answered, though, a simple question. Did you use that 916 million loss to avoid paying personal federal income taxes. Of course i do. Of course i do. And so do all of her donors, most of her donors. I know many of her donors. Her donors took massive tax writeoffs. Number one, i pay tremendous number of taxes. I absolutely used it. So did Warren Buffett, so did george soros, so did many of the other people that hillary is getting money from. Buffett wasted no time responding issuing this statement, im quoting him, mr. Trump says he knows more about taxes than any other human. He has not seen my income tax returns, but i am happy to give him the facts. I have paid federal income tax every year since 1944 when i was 13. Though being a slow starter, i owed only 7 in tax that year. I have copies of all 72 of my returns and none uses a carry forward. Paula monica is here with me, cnn money digital correspondent. If both of these men are billionaires, one consistently pays federal taxes. How does that work . Well, Warren Buffett obviously significantly more than donald trump how many million . 65 billion is the most recent estimate. Despite what trump may claim, hes definitely not going to say that. The issue here is Warren Buffett, like many millionaires, has been able to take deductions for Charitable Giving and for other reasons, but buffett is fighting back saying, here is what my income taxes were last year. Here are the deductions ive taken. Im not carrying forward any of these losses. The issue is there is the report that donald trump had this more than 900 million writedown, this loss, hes been carrying forward for years. Trump could clear all this up if he just showed everyone the returns. Buffett has said hes been under audit as well let me get to that. They just got in my ear, Hillary Clinton just addressed Warren Buffett and i imagine what were talking about. Heres Hillary Clinton. If youre going to call out Warren Buffett, you better be prepared for him telling some good oldfashioned nebraska, honest facts about what the truth really is. And the other thing about Warren Buffett is he agrees with me. Rich people ought to be paying more federal income taxes to pay their fair share for our country. So, the truth being what we reported, that he has paid all 72 years worth of federal income tax. To your point, though, on auditing, being audited, thats trumps whole excuse on being audited, therefore, i cant release my tax returns. The irs has come out and said, slow your roll, mr. Trump, you actually can. Actually. Your point on Warren Buffett says hes been audited in the past. Hes been audited in the past. That hasnt stopped him talk about his own tax returns. To be fair, he hasnt gone out and given us a copy of his tax returns either. We have to take him at his word, but thats still more than weve gotten from donald trump. Buffett added, when you add all the charitable contributions hes made, nearly 3 billion, that is also something at a certain point he cant keep claiming all of that as a deduction or he would never owe anything. Significant in the midst of all this last night that trump did ak noej he hadnt been paying those federal income taxes. Lah so much. Coming up, the drama you did not get to see the president ial debate. What happened behind the scenes when Donald Trumps campaign tried to seat these three ladies, bill clintons accusers, tried to put them in the vip box. Big day . Ah, the usual. Moved some new cars. Hauled a bunch of steel. Kept the supermarket shelves stocked. Made sure everyone got their latest gadgets. Whats up for the next shift . Ah, nothing much. Just keeping the lights on. laugh nice. Doing the big things that move an economy. See you tomorrow, mac. See you tomorrow, sam. Just another day at norfolk southern. You saw that 90minute battle on stage last night in st. Louis, but behind the scenes, there was a bit of a struggle between donald trump and the president ial debate commission. You saw trump invited these women who have accused bill clinton of sexual assault. He held his press conference earlier in the day with four of them, and here is what one of them shared with the press. We did recently, and mr. Trump retweeted it, that actions speak louder than words. Mr. Trump may have said some bad words, but bill clinton raped me and Hillary Clinton threatened me. I dont think theres any comparison. The women were in the first row directly behind his family, but trump actually wanted them closer. Jeff zelany was in st. Louis last night. He joins me live with a little bit of the behindthescenes imagination, jeff. What do you know . Reporter i heard it was an electric moment in the minutes leading up to the debate. The Trump Campaign did want these women in the vip box, the family box, and was trying to make that happen. The commission on president ial debates who is in charge of this, its a bipartisan group, they said, no, this simply isnt going to happen. So security were brought in and they did keep them from sitting there. That was agreed upon long before last evening. It was stopped by the commission. It was all, of course, designed to shake things up and perhaps, i guess, rattle, if you will, the Clinton Campaign. But this is what jennifer palmeri, the Clinton Campaign director, said a short time ago about if secretary clinton was rattled. He threatened to do this. This was a threat. He followed through on his threat. It was all designed to intimidate her. Everything about the staging made that clear. And it failed. So this was his big threat, he followed through, it had no effect, so i dont know what he is going to do for an encore, but she is just going to continue to run a race. She doesnt get rattle vd very easily. Reporter it was clearly one of the earliest signs, brooke, that it was going to be a different kind of debate, different than other president ial debates, and that it was. Well see if these women play a role in the campaign in the next 29 days or so. Secretary clinton will be in ohio later today where i am right now. Some people i talked to at the debate last night were not pleased by that at all. They think thats not helpful. One of the reasons paul ryan is not going to be campaigning any more for donald trump as well. But certainly an interesting bit of drama and intrigue right moments before that debate started last night. Let me follow up with you quickly. Obviously that was team trumps way to kind of change the National Discourse after the 2005 tape and on to these bill clinton accusers. We just saw, jeff, Hillary Clinton for the first time holding that rally, and one of the lines i took note of is when she said donald trump should be apologizing instead of attacking. What are these, lines and messages you think well hear from team clinton in these final 29 days . Its clear the Clinton Campaign and Hillary Clinton herself is trying to see herself what are some openings among republicans, women, as well as men, who were turned down by donald trump. It features republicans. A father, a mother, and another mother, and they are trying to say we cant support donald trump and heres why. Jeff zelany, thank you very much. Any moment from now, donald trump is expected to speak. Rudy giuliani speaking before donald trump. Were keeping an eye on pennsylvania and team trump. Stay with me. You know, it takes a big man to know when hes wrong and to admit it. And to have the humility to apologize and be transparent and be vulnerable with people. And donald trump last night showed that hes a big man. I believe in forgiveness, and were called to forgive as we have been forgiven, and last night my running mate, he showed the American People what was in his heart. He showed humility to the American People, and then he fought back and turned the focus to the choice that we face, and im proud to stand with donald trump that was Donald Trumps running mate today, mike pence, confirming he will stand by trump despite the 2005 video showing trump making vulgar comments about women. But just 24 hours ago, the relationship did appear to be tense, and saturday night live for one took advantage. I found myself sort of in the news rather than covering it. In case you missed it, roll it. The only person i need is my running mate mike pence. I love mike pence. I respect pence. Ill always have pence.
