Donald trumps use of a blatantly antisemitic image from racist web sites to promote his campaign would be disturbing enough but the fact that its part of a pattern should give voters major cause for concern. Now not only wont he apologize for it hes peddling lies and blaming others. Trump should be condemning hate not offering more campaign behavior and rhetoric that engages extremists. It goes on the president should be someone who brings americans together not someone who sends signals and offers policies of division. I mentioned a moment ago, let me reiterate, that trump has deleted this message replacing it with an image that uses a circle on the right side of your screen instead of the star of david, sent out the initial tweet saturday, the day secretary clinton interviewed with the fbi for three and a half hours over her use of that private email server when she served as secretary of state. Thats right, the image initially we found it ten days ago. It was on a white supremacist web site and, of course even before that realization, donald trump was already facing some blowback about the antisemitic imagery invoked in this tweet and so thats why they deleted it they replaced it with this other tweet. Thats what makes his explanation of that today even more confusing. I want to take you to what hes tweeted today to explain this saying the Dishonest Media is trying their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the star of david rather than a sheriffs star or a plain star. Now, of course brooke, thats not a plain star we know what a plain star looks like and they still felt the need to delete it and replace it with Something Else and one of the senior advisors to the campaign explained on new day what was behind this controversy and the fact that they feel like its been taken care of. Take a listen. Not every sixsided star is the star of david, there was no intent at all. We corrected this tweet and have moved on. Theres no antisemitism in mr. Thats what causing a worrisome pattern for some people. There are four Saudi Security officers killed in that attack on their position in medina. We can also add in another attack into that mix. There was a Second Attack that makes a total of four. A Second Attack in the city of qatif after those first two this evening. So that was targeting a Shopping Mall a center poubtsentcenter point Shopping Mall in the city of qatif. What we understand in qatif, both Suicide Attacks there failed because there were no civilian casualties and in medina, the target there was Security Service officers. At least four killed. The death toll may climb and at least one injured that were aware of so far. Brooke . Are they connected, do we know . We know theres been no claim of responsibility but, hey, you have four attacks like this in saudi arabia. Its not quite out of the blue because isis is operating there. Isis has a track record this year of targeting Saudi Security officers targeting government installations. Theyve also targeted in the past shia mosques in saudi arabia so in all likelihood this would appear to be isis. Although they havent claimed responsibility. In the last few years, saudi officials have rounded up and arrested two and a half thousand isis operatives and wannabes inside saudi arabia. They know they have a problem. Well before we get to that brianna, let me tell you that within the last 45 minutes we heard large thuds coming from the west of baghdad. It turns out there has been a rocket barrage on whats known as camp liberty which was an old u. S. Camp now taken over by the Iraqi Military right next to Baghdad International airport. We dont have any word of casualties or damage but i do know having spoken with someone who just arrived there that flights seem to be still coming in. When the explosion took place late saturday night in the karrada district yes, theyre still pulling bodies and body parts out of the ruins. We were there for about five and a half hours today and there was a con strand stream of small groups of people coming to look for relatives who as far as they could tell disappeared off the face of the earth saturday night. There are so many bodies charred beyond recognition. The last we heard was from the iraqi place, 81 bodies. They dont know who they are they have to conduct dna tests. Theres lots of people looking for missing relatives. I was there when one young man found prayer beads in the ashes, he recognized them as his brothers along with a piece of cloth he had the very difficult task of calling up his mother to tell her that his brother, her son, was dead. What youre seeing in saudi arabia in the three triangulated cities of jeddah qatif and medina is again, its either a fight against shia as it occurred in qatif or a fight against the Security Forces because isis or islamic extremists dont believe the government is doing enough to go toward their brand of ideology. So were seeing this all over the world, especially in the middle eastern areas and we are seeing isis growing not in territory or resources in iraq and syria but certainly in n popularity amongst a variety of extremist groups that want to cause these kind of damages at the end of ramadan. Were two days away. Wednesday has been declared the end of the eid holiday, thats the holiest day in islam. All of this is occurring while devout muslims are preparing for breaking the fast of ramadan, it just doesnt make sense. It also doesnt make sense when you think of covering the majority of those victims in istanbul muslim, we know the suicide bomb that went off in medina general, that it was the burial site of the prophet mohammed one of islams holiest sites. I mean you talk to as i was the last couple of days folks who are muslim who talk about what isis spouts is certainly not islam, what are they trying to accomplish though as it pertains to this religion . The locations are important but more important are the targets. And in this case, the targets in most cases have been the shia muslims and that is the extreme target for members of isis. They want to kill shia because they consider them the apostate. Right below them are the Security Forces of any government that they believe is either bending toward the shia or leaning towards apostates in the west. So youre seeing a combination of things that anyone who doesnt believe in this extreme view of islam is going to be the target of this organization. And thats why i think the soul of islam is whats got to rise up and continue to fight along with the west against these terrorists. General, what about the terrorists themselves because as i was reading about what happened in dhaka and bangladesh where the 22 people were killed i was reading about how terror experts are warning of this new trend of radicalization where apparently these attackers were normal guys this is dhaka specifically. Lets talk eess talk saudi arabia first and foremost. Multiple explosions across three cities two blasts hitting near a shia mosque in saudi arabias eastern city of qatif. A third suicide bomb detonating close to headquarters where the prophet mohammed is buried in the city of medina. These blasts coming after that explosion near the u. S. Consulate in the saudi city of jeddah. To be clear, isis has not claimed responsibility for the attacks in saudi arabia but they follow a wave of terror attacks from that group making good on their pledge to step up the attacks during the muslim holy month of ramadan in baghdad a suicide truck bomb has ripped through a baghdad neighborhood, that is now being called the single deadliest terror attack in iraq since 2003. Just to show you the stale of the suicide bombing in baghdad. Cnn flew this drone so you can see the scale of the devastation, the entire building incinerated. 215 people are believed to be dead there. This comes after 44 people were killed in istanbul in a coordinated isis bombing inside the airport there. And then days later dhaka, bangladesh 22 people were killed in a tenhour standoff with isis militants inside of a cafe joining me now, two Senior International correspondents ben wedeman live from baghdad and in istanbul nima elbagir. Talk to me about the hours you spent at the site of the bombing, ben and the mortar attacks in the last couple hours near the airport. That was a rocket attack were told by iraqi officials. They found the truck from which the rockets were launched. They were aimed toward camp liberty which is right next to Baghdad International airport but some rockets went astray and hit nearby villages wounding we understand several civilians. But that pales in comparison to the gore and bloodshed that is still on the scene at this the blast site from saturday night. They are still at this time pulling body parts and bodies out of the ashes, out of the ruins there. The bomb was caused by its believed a suicide truck bomber in a refrigerator truck that was parked right between two very active malls and the explosion threw a wall of flame into both of them killing, as we said 215 people at this point. But that number is likely to go up. As far as iraqi officials go they have only theyve of the bodies theyve pulled out, 81 are charred beyond recognition and it will take dna tests to verify their identities. And because theres so many people who have lost loved ones and have no trace of them when we were at the bomb scene today for about five and a half to six hours we saw one group after another coming up looking, asking for information, sifting through the ashes and the rubble for some sign of the dead one man was looking for five relatives who had gone missing. He found a cell phone which had the sim card of his cousin and hes still looking for the others. Another woman who spend more than 24 hours going from one hospital to another to one baghdad morgue to another. She still cant find her 29yearold son who was in the shopping area looking for clothing to buy for the holiday that concludes the holy month of ramadan. Brooke . So as ben points out the violence there, the death toll likely to rise. Meantime several nights ago you had the triple Suicide Attack inside that istanbul airport inside the International Departures area. Nima to you, the question over the last couple days will then be how will durkee retaliate within syria . Tell me about that the . Well it appears that retaliation, that fightback has already begun. Turkeys semiofficial news agency is quoting security sources that there have been strikes hitting isis targets inside northern syria. Theyre saying their Security Forces are confirming 14 dead. You were here you saw the scale of that devastation and you were here for president erdogans blistering speech in which he vowed that for every one of us they kill he said well kill 10 of them. But this isnt just about making good on the view of retribution, turkish authorities are telling the news agency that they believe this was an active plot against turkey that they are foiling that they hit these targets because they believe this is where a new plot is being gestated. As you said isis vowed an uptick in terror but aalso this vowed the uptick in terror would be relentless and here in turkey theyve clearly decided the only solution to fight back against isis as it wreaks havoc across the world is to hit them in their headquarter inside syria, to take the fight to them brooke. Karen greenberg is joining me director at the center of National Security at Fordham University law school in new york and author of rogue justice, the making of the security state. And joining us cnn military analyst Lieutenant Colonel Rick Francona in oregon. Welcome to both of you. Karen, let me turn to you. The scale of the attacks, the call to attack during ramadan, the death toll. Success . Well it depends on how you look at it. There are some experts who would say that this is what our winning and their losing looks like. So you have a number of things overlapping here. One is the end of ramadan. There was a call for these attacks during ramadan. It ends officially on the fifth and theres a threeday celebration to end it. But you have to fact that isis had been losing ground and theyve been losing ground in big ways in the embattled areas in iraq in syria, so there is a sense of desperation thats fitting out into other places. In toigs that because the focus is on the muslim world now, were not talking about the United States and europe theres a sense of them building on the muslim divisions that there are there so you see these attacks in baghdad were on the shia. Youve seen saudi arabia in saudi arabia as well, were seeing what weve been expecting for a long time simmering below the surface which is this shia sunni divide then layer the politics on top of that like the turkish divisions with the pkk and others and what youre seeing is a conflagration in the region for all of these reasons like the perfect storm happening as ramadan comes to an end. You say its a perfect storm. Colonel, let me turn to you. It does depend on perspective as far as wins or losses but to me its the bottom line of the death toll. Just talking to ben wedeman and the several hundred lives lost. That number is climbing because of that attack there. Its hard to swallow. I know for us in the u. S. It seems farther away but still you have these attacks back to back to back. Its a constant wave and karen took the words right out of my mouth. This is the perfect storm. Were at a Tipping Point now. We see isis losing territory and they have to do something. Any terrorist organization you want to create significant emotional events and they have done that. And get attention. And as they lose territory, theyre striking out because they have to find some other piece of ground whether they can exploit divisions in turkey saudi arabia but they have got to be in a Geographic Area otherwise theyre not a caliphate. Thats what they want to be. If they cant do that they morph into another terrorist organization and become competitors for al qaeda but without a state. This is the first time karen, just being totally real ive had friends in the u. S. Who have seen whats happened i think especially seeing what happened in the istanbul airport and all those people just wanting to travel and folks here looking around the airport thinking okay, where would i get out heaven forbid something were to happen . How worried are you about that . It depends on where in the world youre talking about. U. S. In the u. S. I think we understand this problem in a very intelligent and sophisticated way. So i may be less worried than others. I trust our Law Enforcement and intelligence agents to keep us safe. Is it a perfect safety 100 i can guarantee . No but they spent 15 years and many trillions of dollars learning this business. Having said that you never know what will happen but i do think whats happening now is really focused in the muslim world and its very interesting because one thing the United States has always done like it or not, is to say this is the muslim religion against the world. Now were seeing the divisiveness is in the muslim world and so it makes me even less afraid here in some ways. How is it divisive . You have muslims and then you have terrorists. But terrorists who are claiming themselves to be the Islamic State, who are attacking other muslims. Its an ideology. Exactly. So you saw this in turkey now youre seeing in the iraq and the sense of where does the United States fit into this is a different chapter and story and i think in a way our Law Enforcement agents are going to have to evolve to understand this kind of risk but its not make megain particular think that i should be warning or anything like that. We are in the same state we were before. This moment is about this wave of attacks throughout the muslim world and its interesting far reason. And terribly sad. So sad. Just leaving istanbul yesterday and waiting in the passport line and seeing those bullet holes, it was chilling to know it happened right there and 44 people were killed. Well we also found the image appeared on a white supremacist message board. Whats not clear is how an image like that would go from a white supremacist message board on to Donald Trumps twitter feed and weve asked a number of his advisors multiple times if they could explain how Something Like this ended up happening. They have not responded to those requests but donald trump did what he does best he took to twitter today he said Dishonest Media is trying their absolute best to depict a star and a tweet as the star of david rather than a sheriffs star or plain star. Whats confusing about that, brooke, is they obviously felt the need to replace the image with one of a circle instead so there is clearly some thinking within the Trump Campaign they needed to do something to correct this. David chalian, if theyre saying it wasnt antisemitic, the question is why did they delete it . Exactly. How bad is this for them . I just think this once again raises the key question that sara said is going unanswered so far is how does an image like this what is the process by which the Trump Campaign finds this image, this enters into their Digital Communications play book as something to use and put out to millions of supporters. Yes, theres a clear admission that it was bad because they changed it. But i dont understand just if you did sort of an autopsy of this moment about how a Campaign Takes this into their warehouse, if you will, and then distributes it to millions of followers, how does that happen without somebody catching this doesnt belong as part of president ial politics . And i think the other question to davids point is was this intentional or unintentional . Because if it was intentional, that was one thing. If it was unintentional why does this continue happening . Why haas donald trump retweeted neonazi supporters . What did he blast out this graphic with incorrect and racially charged Crime Statistics and why isnt there a process by which these retweets are looked at if they have had a number of missteps and if this is in fact another one. So you have that then lets pivot to the veep stakes and other treats from trump where hes mentioned senator tom cotton from arkansas indiana governor mike pence and iowa senator jodi ernst. Hi would warm a lot of social conservative hearts. He is of the social conservative movement as well so if donald trump is looking for someone coming into and out of his convention to really help stitch all the facets of the Republican Party together mike pence is somebody who fits that bill. Which might be a reason for them to announce before the convention to grab some of those republicans and bring them to cleveland, sara murry. Do we know if that might happen and whos speaking at the convention . Well its certainly possible he will announce his vp pick ahead of the convention despite for a while saying he wanted a big flashy rollout, he wanted the fanfare of the convention but i think they have had problems lining up speakers. Weve seen a number of banner republicans saying they wont appear much less speak there so he said he will have Business Leaders, his family members, ivanka trump speaking Melania Trump speaking hes asked ben carson to speak but the rest of the list despite donald trump 2018 its filled out is still very much up in the air.
