Families. And now, questions about whether the fbi dropped the ball weeks before the attack. The owner of the florida gun shop says he contacted the agency when the killer came in looking for to buy body armor and a large amount of ammunition. When he was on the cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language. That was more concerning. And then he came back and he was requesting ammo. So he wanted bulk ammo only so at that time, he declinled any business and he left the store. We had no link, no contact. We didnt know who he was. But we did contact the authorities and let them know we just had a suspicious person that was in here. Live to orlando now and cnns Jessica Schneider for us. What is the fbi saying about all this now . Reporter don, the fbi is stressing the timeline. Store clerk at the gun shop south of where the shooter lived said a man walked in like you said trying to buy that ammunition and trying to buy body armor and talking into the cell phone in a foreign language. The store clerk and the manager reported it to the fbi. The fbi did call back but the problem here is that the store clerk and other people at that gun shop didnt realize that this man appeared to be omar mateen until just after the nightclub shooting at pulse and didnt connect the two. In addition, the store didnt have any Surveillance Video. They didnt have contact information, identifying information or even any purchase records so they had nothing to give the fbi and thats why the fbi investigation could not move forward on this without any of that supporting information, don. Interesting. Jessica, thank you very much. I appreciate your reporting. We are also learning more about the gunmans past. Documents provided to cnn show that he was suspended from his Florida High School a total of 48 times, most were inschool suspension and incidents of fighting with injury. I want to bring in michael balboni. Clearly, were getting a picture of a very troubled man, even before sundays massacre. One of the things that you see here is that this is really the worstcase scenario. Someone living in the community who has demonstrated some problems with violence, some antisocial behavior and it was always described as charming, dancing away from the problem and you know what that reminds me of is taking a look at profiles of serial killers like ted bundy. They demonstrate some similar capabilities. Charming, below the radar screen. When does it become enough to tip that scale and say this is a guy whos a real problem . Dont give him a gun license. Dont hire him as a security guard. Dont let him become anything within Law Enforcement. He was texting his wife and making phone calls during the does that tell you anything about him . Well, im not a psychiatrist but this is or about the motives. This is a guy with no remorse at that point in time. About him, what hes doing and all sorts of questions as to what the true motivations are. What about the background, the fact of questions of sexuality, the claim that he pledged allegiance to isis on the 911 call . Does that make it more difficult for investigators . This is really an onion of information and reveal something new. One of the things that ive always stressed when ive been involved in this is to let the evidence take you where it takes you. We want to jump to the conclusion this is an isis related incident and may be that and more things, as well. Isis is so good at advertising and soliciting people and a certain population reacts to that. As of this point in time, we dont know they had any type of contact with isis operatives. Hes sitting around watching the image on the television. They refer to 9 11. He was clearful at that. What were the things that motivated that . To take those steps, images, those mental predisposition and then go out and do this kind of massacre, thiss going to be a haunting question for investigators. Listening to jessicas report about the gun shop owner contacting the fbi and the fbi saying we didnt have identifying information. Whens the breakdown there . So, you know, i have seen investigations when it takes it both ways. You have so many different elements and got to be this and turns out not to be that and then always the fear that you have overlooked something or something comes together and then in retrospect you say, uhhuh, you should have seen this, this and this. Thats difficult realtime particularly based upon resources, the ability to interview somebody and did you have a really good picture of the guy, a good description . Very hard to put the pieces together. You dont think the fbi dropped the ball here in. They will be criticized supposed to be leading the investigations but he had a license for a gun. He was working as a security guard. He passed psychologicals. This may not have risen to that level quick enough to prevent this. New standard, not investigating crime. Its the fbis Traditional Mission but preventing an act of violen violence. Very, very difficult. One more thing on the Text Messages, we know that the wife now investigators are looking at the wife now. He texted her and said, you know, she said where are you . Dont you have, you know, dont you know whats going on . She said, no. And then i love you. Does this sort of exonerate her from having any connection with this . Well, the really question is how complicit was she . Supposedly looking at targets together. Did she talk him out of this . What point in time does she have to pick up the phone, a duty to report it to officials . Thats a tough question. Theyre saying we have heard that this as far as getting a grand jury together and this is moving at a rapid speed. Is it usual this amount of time to assemble a grand jury and to try to figure out if they want to indict her . Pretty fast but then the outrageous, you know, carnage done here really is captivating the nation and the world. Does it Say Something about her involvement . Yes. What . Prosecutors looked and initially said we have to bring evidence before a grand jury and see what they say about it and they believe they have enough to present to a grand jury. I spoke to a number of attorneys in orlando saying they dont do this unless they feel they have a strong case and strong case shell be indicted. Certainly i dont think they bring it to the grand jury with this much scrutiny unless they had something. Thank you. Appreciate it. Orlando is saying goodbye to the victims of pulse nightclub. Earlier today i spoke with his mother gloria and his brother samuel who say the deepest, perhaps, invisible wounds are the ones that are going to take the longest to heal. Just doesnt really want to think about it. Its hard to speak to media and speak about it. Huddling together in pools of blood, our Anderson Cooper sat down with the man that shot this video. Shh okay, okay. It was dark and hot and the bathroom was full of panicked club goers. This cell phone video is one of three taken by miguel who was pushed in the bathroom when the shots began. I just remember, like, you can smell, like, the blood. There was so much blood. You can just smell it. And its like everywhere you look, all my clothes were full of blood. We were sitting down and it was just like a huge puddle of blood. After a while it started to drying up and smell really bad. Though some people were crying and whispering to each other, miguel said he tried to remain quiet and recorded the images to send to his girlfriend to know he is alive. Chris, oh my gosh, chris. Only people in the alive are talking and moving. Everybody else is dead. There was about 17 of us in there. Only like five or six of us made it out. Had you been hit at this point . Yeah. I was shot in the foot. One point in the video you see looks like people passing a glass of water. Yeah. We were passing water around because there was one guy, chris, he was choking on his own blood. So we were trying to, like, make him swallow and to be okay. Chris, oh my gosh, chris. Hes not shh okay, okay. He kept asking for water. And there was other people that were shot that was just they needed water an they wanted water and only thing we could think of to calm them down at that moment. There was a sink inside the stall . Yeah. Twice he says the gunman fired into the stall. As the hours pass, they tried to help one another stay calm and constant fear of the gunman to return. Constant fear those already wounded would die. Stay with me. Okay. Were people talking to each other . Yeah. Were whispering trying to keep everybody quiet. Miguel was shot twice, on his right foot and left leg and just been released from the hospital. He knows hes fortunate to be alive but says he cant stop thinking of those that died beside him. As mourners gather today to say goodbye to those killed in orlando we remember the victims of another mass shooting that stunned the nation and thats charleston. Nine people were in a bible study at the historic Mother Emanuel Ame Church when they were brutally gunned down one year ago today. The victims included their pastor. As the city pauses to remember, many recall president obamas eulogy, perhaps one of the most powerful, painfully heartfelt speeches of his tenure. Amazing grace. Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me hmm. Sang the whole song. That was a moment. Brooke baldwin takes us back and revisits the tragic timeline of that days events. I was asking that he wouldnt kill all of us. Sounds of the room that night will always be with me. When you see come close to the tv, i be like, woo thats my mama church. I felt like that this person had come in to my community and had ripped it apart. We will never be the same. As we move forward. Reporter on june 17th, 2015, like many other wednesday nights, a group of people gathered for bible study at charlestons Mother Emanuel Ame Church, one of the largest, oldest black congregations in the south. I stayed that night because my friend was leading the bible study, myra thompson. She asked me to stay. Originally i said i wouldnt stay. Reporter Holly Shepard part of the devout group who welcomed a stranger into their worship, a young white man who had never attended before. Nearly an hour later, as they closed their eyes in prayer, the man unloaded his gun. Evil walked into the side door of your church. I had faith. Thats why im still here. I prayed under that table and he left me here. Reporter the gunman told Polly Shepard he would let her live to tell the story. She was one of five people to survive the massacre one year ago. Cnn was given rare access inside that bible study room and i spoke excleeseively to those left behind. This was the room. Where he came . People were seated . Yes. Around a table . Yes. Holding bible study. Yes. And he was invited to join them. Reverend goff presides over 30 churches in the district. He left mother emanuel just before the gunman entered the church through the side door. Left to go to another meeting about 20 minutes away. My understanding the gunman was already in the parking lot. Reporter a dispatch log details the initial 911 calls from survivors that night. These chilling words show their pleas for help. Shot pastor. Female is hiding under the table. Male is reloading. The number of shots fired, so many. Were you sitting around the table or you were in the back . I was around the table, the last table in the back. When you prayed under that table, were you asking for something . I was asking that he wouldnt kill all of us. Yes. Reporter First Responders rushed to the scene in mere minutes. Thats when Charleston Police chief Gregory Mullen got the call. I was in my home with my wife preparing to go to bed. Actually. And when i received the phone call. Very quickly i realized something was bad because my deputy chief told me this we had a shooting in the Church Downtown and hes informing me, as well, resources on the way to the church to help. And then im on the phone talking with the mayor. And advising him. And the police chief called. It was about 9 30. After i hung up, i went to my closet and put on a coat and tie, a suit. Why . Because i knew that everything i said and did had to be perfect. And i knew that i had to have a complete respect for this church. Reporter even after the rampage, Law Enforcement including the fbi, were on high alert. First stop was the church itself. To make sure that the crime scene was secure. For over about an hour and a half we were doing bomb sweeps to try to make sure that we did not have any secondary devices. At that particular time we werent sure if the individual was still in the area. Do you remember hearing the sirens . I do. Reporter the honorable reverend pinckney was the churchs beloved pastor. Did you ask where the reverend was . Well, when i got here, i said to the Police Officers, i said, has senator pinckney arrived yet . I pictured him coming down the highway at 100 Miles Per Hour from columbia. And they said, no, mayor riley. He was there. Come close to the tv, i be like, woo thats my mama church. Reporter ester lance was gathered around the block in a hotel waiting to hear the fate of their loved ones. When you knew something was wrong at the church, did you know your mom was there . Yeah. In that bible study. I said, listen. Tell me the truth. Is my mama in that church . What did you say to those family members behind closed doors . We explained to them we had a situation in the church as they were aware of and at this point that there were nine people that were deceased. All i can see is body bag. Ugh. But i knew my mama gone. My heart telling me this. You knew. Yes. Identify who was in the church and had to identify those who were slain, murdered. We were now in the throws of planning nine funerals, homegoing celebration. And they in the hotel did not know exactly what had happened. They were probably about 200 people in the room so then they deducted that that was their brother, sister, father, cousin, friend. And all the ranges of weeping, crying, wailing, moaning, sobbi sobbing. It was a gasp that ill never forget when we told them that, and at that point, reverend goff broke out into a song and everybody was singing together and Holding Hands and praying. Holding hands and praying. This is the worst night of my career. Reporter just after phd night, chief mullen, mayor riley and reverend goff left the hotel and shared what had happened with the rest of the world. The first press conference, it was very personal. I felt like that this person had come in to my community and had ripped it apart. I had a little stenographic pad because, you know, exhausted an you want to get it right. And i referred to it as a most unspeakable act. This is a most unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy. We would hope that this person who has committed this heinous crime, a hate crime, be brought to justice. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Reporter after an intense 14hour manhunt, police apprehended their suspect. He was some 250 miles away in shelby, north carolina. We later learned the 21yearold gunman hoped to start a race war. This act of terrorism, racism, bigotry, was the act of a one individual who wanted to create a race riot in the city of charleston. What they found out is that our faith was greater than fear. And that love will always overtake hate. They will come together as a community which we did. We pulled together to make sure that how we responded to evil was not with evil. As democrats continue to push for laws that ban people on the terror watch list from buying guns National Conversation has been reignited about how easy it is for anyone to buy a gun, even a 13yearold boy. Watch this eye opening experiment from hbos real sports with bryant gumble. Take a ride with jack. A 13yearold boy who got his braces off and usually spends saturday morning playing basketball with his friends. But hes also a young actor and today we hired him to help us make a point. We asked him to take a drive around town, with his mother, of course, since hes not nearly old enough to drive a car. We pass shops where he isnt old enough to work the register. Then we stop at the Convenience Store to see jack try to buy beer. Can i get it . No. The cashier cant believe he tried. Literally looks like hes 12. Reporter at the next store, jack tries to buy cigarettes with no luck. Just wondering if i can have cigarettes. Later, he strikes out trying to buy racy magazines. You have to be 18. Thank you. Youre welcome. And then lottery tickets. Can i get a couple scratch offs . Do you have your i. D. . 13. Youre what . 13. You cant get no scratch offs, baby. Its laughable to everyone here. The idea that wed ever expose a 13yearold to the dangers of a lottery ticket. But then, we arrive here. At the gun show. It should shoot pretty good for you. Ill take it. Within minutes, the 13yearold easily and legally bought a 22caliber rifle of a private seller and walked away with it. Interesting. Well, while federal law mandates you must be 18 to buy a gun from a licensed dealer, the sale in that video was made at a gun show and its considered a private sale. Private sales require less documentation about who is buying the gun and how frequently transactions like that are made. Something we can measure is the spike in gun sales. Smith and wesson reports the annual sales up 22 . They saw jumps in sales after the massacres in San Bernardino and newtown and also in charleston. But the people who see evidence of this trend up close are local Gun Shop Owners so lets discuss with one right now. Jay wallace, owns the Adventure Outdoors gun shop in smyrna, georgia. And, jay, thank you for coming on. Youre not only seeing a surge in overall sales since the orlando shooting but sales of ar15 rifles. How many have you sold and why is it popular . Im not sure how many we sold this week. Earlier in the week, when we were really busy, i looked at it and it was up to 15 an hour at the time. People were purchasing. Whats behind it, you think . Well, its three things. One is that its just the sign of the times of people understanding that they have to take responsibility of their own safety. That the police cant be everywhere all the time. Another is that theyre worried about maybe the government making these illegal at some point. And they want to get one while they still can. And then theres others that are purchasing them because if they are made illegal the ones that are there will drastically increase in what theyre worth and would be an investment. So why is this particular gun so popular, ar15 . Well, theyre popular because theyre accurate and theyre reliable. And its just a gun that, you know, that hunters like to use and people like to use for target practice. Its just an enjoyable gun that they like to have. I want to theres an essay in the New York Times i want to read part of it with you and its written by a military veteran. He says i used an Assault Rifle in the army. I dont think civilians should own them. And he quotes a fellow officer writing people who say they need an ar for hunting or home defense dont understand the ballistics or overpenetration. They cause horrific damage to humans. Thats why the military developed them. Do you agree with that . Its a half truth. What he used in the military is not the same thing. Yes, it is an ar but the firearm he used in the military was fully auto. Okay . Theres a big difference there. And theres the ar shots a 223 and a 223 is actually very pretty much not powerful compared to some other calibers out there now. So i wouldnt agree with that at all. But its powerful enough to do damage to 49, 50 people in orlando. I mean, thats pretty powerful. I understand but theres hundreds, thousands of ways that people can be killed. That, you know, thats much worse. So im you know, you really have to look at it and say that, you know, its the reasons why somebody does something and who does it is much more important than the means that they do it so i dont know why you would want to pass over that and go straight to a firearm when theres hundreds of other ways they could have done the same thing. Like what . You can take out a firearm no. Explain to me what are the other ways to do that much to kill that many people quickly . I dont think its smart to talk about that on national tv and lots of people listening. Including people that might be on the edge of wanting to do Something Like that. But im just saying that i think you should no. People can go on the internet. This is thats true. But im not going to help them. This is not a cartoon. Thats true. Kids watching a cartoon. You said hundreds of thousands of other ways but thats a pretty powerful way to kill people. Maybe youre talking about automobiles. Well, its just i mean, an adult with some understanding of things that are in this world right now that can be used, chemicals, explosives, theres lots of things an you mention the internet and thats one of the things that probably makes it a lot easier for folks to be able to do things like that. Its information is so easy to get now and you take the persons wanting to do Something Like that and why they want to do it and put it together and they get the knowledge and then they do it. Focusing on the means they did it, you know, if you could take away a certain firearm and it would solve all the problems, if it would do away with terrorists, everybody would be for it. It doesnt make any sense because its not going to solve anything. What it would do is just go to another means and people are not going to be less sorrowful or less injured because of it so we need to focus on the means. Less on the means and focus on whos doing it and why they want to do such a thing. Jay wallace, we appreciate your perspective. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. You know that music means its time to talk politics. Senator john mccain is back pedaling and fast after saying that to directly responsible for the orlando nightclub massacre. Mccain made the initial comment blaming the president just as the president visited with grieving victims families and friends in orlando. Listen to this. Barack obama is directly responsible for it because when he pulled everybody out of iraq al qaeda went to syria, became isis, and isis is what it is today thanks to Barack Obamas failures, utter failures by pulling everybody out of iraq thinking that conflicts end just because you leave. So the responsibility for it lies with president barack obama and his failed policies. So he later walked it back tweeting that he misspoke and said that he meant to critiques the National Security decisions. So, lets have a conversation now. Heres amy cramer, cofounder of women vote for trump superpac. Good to see you. Good to see you. National review senior Political Correspondent mr. Jim garrity. Nice to talk to you, as well. So, jim, mccain is in a tight reelection battle for the Arizona Senate seat. Does he need to do more to tamp down the outrage over this blame obama statement that he made . It probably it was good to see him walk this back. It is kind of uncharact eric for mccain. You remember he had a classy response to the defeat in the 2008 election. It just kind of felt like the week since orlando, theres been a really toxic instinct to blame our political opponents for what happened. Its omar mateens fault but theyre saying this is obama directly responsible. Thankfully he walked it back. The New York TimesEditorial Board said it reflects christian antigay bigotry. It is the gun mns fault. If we choose to be so angry to say, no, no, no. Sure he shot him but the cause is who disan i gree with me politically. We can never unite as a country. Im glad we walked it back. I dont think people associate john mccain with frothing at the mouth and flying off the handle at least in this forempty. Remember the response of president obama was a muslim and he said, no way, right away, cut it off at the rally. Amy, the Washington Post ran a headline of trumpism explains mccains claim that obama is responsible for orlando suggesting that trumps rhetorical excesses may be spurring other republicans to ratchet up antiobama remarks. I dont think so. Look. I know everybodys on edge. It wasnt that long ago that paris and brussels happened and San Bernardino and now this in orlando. And it comes back to isis. And these Syrian Refugees and the people that are able to cross our borders and are we able to vet them properly and i think everybodys on edge about it. I dont think that you can say its trumpism. I think senator mccain meant that, you know, at the end of the day the buck stops with the president and his state department. The foreign policy. And i think thats probably what he meant. And he didnt say that specifically but i think everybodys on edge and i mean, look. Somebodys got to do something, don. Somebody has to stand up and deal with the problem. I have to say if the president were at angry with isis and whats going on, you know, with this terrorism as he was at donald trump, we might get somewhere with this but he doesnt seem to be able to direct his anger there. Jim, i see you are, you know, you dont have a good poker face. Whens going on . Yeah. We on the right enjoy if not laughing but the left will say, oh, that is terrible event in orlando. We have to ban ar15 even though the gun he used wasnt real lay ar15. It was modified. Yeah. But the point being to turn around and have donald trump see, this proves why i was right an we need the ban on muslim immigrants. Jim, thats not what i said. Let him finish. Okay. Described him as an afghan born in america. Okay. Thats a creative definition of it. We all want to believe what we thought beforehand is exactly what was needed to stop this. The guys not a syrian refugee. The guys not an immigrant. None of these ideas, even the argument put out to put people on the terror watchlist and not buy guns, omar mateen wasnt on the terror watchlist. You have to let amy get in. The shoe horn of preferred answer to stop this. Amy. So i mean, we have the internet and isis inspired. The bottom line is somebody dropped the ball. Was it the local authorities in florida . Was it the fbi . Was it the cia . Was it the nsa . Who was it . We have had this problem before. That was a problem but leading up to 9 11 and the agencies werent communicating and if this guys been on the fbi watchlist before, how did all of this go down . How did this happen . And this gun owner or the Gun Store Owner i guess notified the authorities. Some point somebody has to stand up and accept responsibility. And yes, this guy was an american citizen but what about the people in San Bernardino . What about the wife that was able to come here and amy . Amy, to jims point, that everyone is pointing the finger at someone else, the fbi, you know, National Security, this person, that person. When will we say its our fault that everything we have done lends to this happening . Okay. We need to deal with a lot of things in the society and we no. No. It has to do one guy deciding to kill lots of people. Go ahead. The moment you say its all our fault and no don, whatever you were doing last saturday night you were not shooting up a lub. It is not your fault or amys and except for the gunman and maybe the wife apparently knew about this. Yes. Or suspicion and never dialed 911. We are never responsible for our actions that we have or havent taken . We are not responsible for maybe not holding our politicians, holding their feet to the fire . I think we can all take responsibility in some way for what happens in our own country. Can i Say Something, don . Thats exactly why you have Bernie Sanders and donald trump that have risen to where they are because theyre so tired of politics as normal. Theyre so tired of the political spin. And that nobody will come out and call it like they see it and stand strong on their beliefs and stand firm. What they believe in. They spin everything and the minute that somebody, you know, chastises somebody for something they said, what do they do . Trying to walk it back. The American People are tired of it. Theyre really tired of it. When do you get Straight Talk from a politician . You dont. Yeah. Thats why you have seen the rise of Bernie Sanders and donald trump. Heres Straight Talk from a news anchor, i have to go getting to the break. This conversation is done but i appreciate it. I enjoyed it. Thank you, jim, amy. Appreciate it. Have a great weekend. You, too. Well be right back in a moment. Why are you deleting these photos . Because my teeth are yellow. Why don,t you use a whitening toothpaste . Im afraid it,s bad for my teeth. Try crest 3d white. Crest 3d White Diamond strong toothpaste and rinse. Gently whiten. And fortify weak spots. Use together for 2 times stronger enamel. Crest 3d white. No, youre not yogonna watch it tch it we cant let you download on the goooooo youll just have to miss it yeah, youll just have to miss it we cant let you download. Uh, no thanks. I have x1 from xfinity so. Dont fall for directv. Xfinity lets you download your shows from anywhere. I used to like that song. Hello, everyone. Im don lemon. We begin with breaking news on the terror attack in orlando. Today, two agents visited a florida mosque where the killer went to pray. Cnn has been told the agents questioned the mosque official about the killers relationship with other members and those in the local islamic community. Were also learning today that the gunman visited holy sites in saudi arabia four years ago with a delegation of the Islamic Center aft new york university. Many in that group were muslim officers with the new York Police Department and their families. And now, questions about whether the fbi dropped the ball weeks before the attack. The owner of this florida gun shop says he contacted the agency when the killer came in looking to buy body armor and a large amount of ammunition. When he was on the cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language. That was more concerning. Then he came back and he was requesting ammo. So he wanted bulk ammo only. At this time, he declined any business and he left the store. We had no link, no contact. We had didnt know who he was but we did contact authorities and let them know we just had a suspicious person that was in here. Cnns Jessica Schneider live for us in orlando. What does s the fbi saying about this, jessica . Reporter don, the fbi is stressing the timeline on this and noting the first thing that happened was the store clerk did see the man come into the gun shop in jenson beach, florida, saying the man requested the body armor and ammunition and then talked on the cellphone in a foreign language. This store clerk contacted the manager, they contacted the fbi and gave the fbi some details, the fbi called them back. But the point to note the fbi says is that the gun shop owner did not make this connection that this was potentially omar mateen until after the pulse nightclub shooting. So essentially, the gun shop owner didnt have identifying details of the person that came in and raised suspicion. They didnt have any Surveillance Video and they certainly didnt have any purchase records since they turned this man away so the fbi saying since they had very little to work with here they couldnt move forward in any investigation. Don . All right. Jessica in orlando, thank you very much. Now new information finding out about the killers troubled past, and for that we turn to cnns brian todd in ft. Pierce, florida, with more on that. What do you know, brian . Reporter don, in short, what we have been digging up over the past couple of days of omar mateen, documents like these im holding from the School Systems around here, basically showing a lifetime of red flagless for omar mateen. We have just found documents of the Martin CountySchool System where he went to high school indicate that mateen was suspended from school for a total from high school from a total of 48 days a s and 2 of incidents of fighting with injury and recovered there from the Martin CountySchool System. What we also dug further into this killers past. These are documents im holding from the st. Lucie county schools going to Elementary School. 176 pages, don, worth of documents of the discipline problems going back to third grade. Im gong to read you a very quick passage, verbally abusive, rude, aggressive with much talk about violence and sex. Thats when he was in third grade. He would have been about 8 years old. We talked to a classmate of his going to school with him at an Elementary School in port st. Lucie saying in fourth or fifth grade threatened to bring a gun to school and kill everyone. We uncovered in the documents disciplined 31 times between 1992 about 6 years aeld own 1999 about 13 years old, don. A long, long tortured history of discipline problems for omar mateen. Brian, thank you very much. Cant wait to talk to the next person, to bring in now former michigan congressman and cnn National Security commentator mike rogers to get his expertise this and host of cnn new original series of classified premiering this sunday night at 10 00. We are finding out about this killers family, mike rogers. Though not his wife. So first, you know, we learned about a possible attack and the involvement around 4 00 sunday morning and then the Police Showed up at the home of a gunmans sister. The sister then contacted her father who lived just doors away. So, this happened before the gunman was killed about two hours later and any idea how police would have known that his identity at the point to go to his familys home . Well, theres probably several things. They probably did an immediate review subsequent to the notification of the shooting and looked back at any of chatter that they may have had or any other leads that they may have had and we cant rule out they had other leads about this individual. So they would go back and a normal course of business saying we have this shooting, they understood that the shooting was under way so the local Law Enforcement was there to contain that. Investigators were trying to probably make sure, okay, is there anything else to worry about . Can ge tote the house . Other accomplices, bombs, explosives other weapons, Something Else that we can do to shut this down . Remember, he was communicating with his in his social media field with the girlfriend at the very least. And he was publicly checking other websites and probably in realtime to narrow it down to figure out the shooter by 4 00 a. M. And earlier an got folked dispatched pretty quickly to the residence to probably, again, make sure that if theres anything else going on that they didnt know to cut it off, b, or, c, weapons or ammunition to take off the street. Lets talk more about the Text Messages of him and his wife texting in the attack. Investigators looking at her. What exactly are they looking for to tie her to this attack, mike . Well, their going to try to figure out did she know what his intentions were . Which is key. Did she facilitate his actions that night going to store knowing that he was buying ammunition for a terrorist attack . Did when he was going to the disney property, did she know specifically that he was surveilling that particular location as a possible attack or other places . When he went to the pulse nightcl nightclub, apparently she was with him at least once. Was she, you know, again, party to the conspiracy to commit this horrendous act of murder . Thats what theyre going to be looking for. Its not just enough to say i tried to talk him out of it. The fbi is going to do a thorough investigation to see, all right, what really was your role and did you have the opportunity to pick up the phone and call the fbi or the local authorities to stop this mass murder . Thats what they try to determine. Not an easy case to make, don, i might add but thats im sure where the investigation is going. So lets talk about, you know, investigative stories. Your new show premiers in sunday night here on cnn called declassified. Tell us about it. If you love spy stories, you will love it. If you want to meet the people that do this work in the shadows normally, they tell the stories through their own words and its i think such a powerful set of stories to tell people exactly what happens in the spy business, everything from the first woman who went to moscow to run a russian asset with the kgb chasing her all over to fbi investigations into choi need espionage right here in the united states. And all the intrigue that goes with it. But importantly, don, its told through the stories. Very powerful stories that allow somebody to kind of walk and peek behind the curtain of how espionage really works in the real world. Pretty great stuff. Sounds like it. Thank you very much. Look forward to watching that. Show premiers sunday 10 00 p. M. Eastern here on cnn. Boy, it is creeping up because the Republican National convention is just one month away and while you might think republicans are hyping the unity cry, House Speaker paul ryan is doing the opposite. Ryan reporting saying his fellow house members should, quote, follow their conscience coming to backing trump. And now, cnn is learning some gop delegates discussing creative ways to ditch the Convention Rules to cut trump loose. Whens going on here . Mike shields is here to talk about its, a cnn delegate analyst and former chief of staff of the Republican National committee, also is a president of the superpac dedicated to advocating for conservative issues and electing republicans to congress. I think he has the longest title of anyone ive introduced and a political reporter here at cnn and ed okeefe for the Washington Post. Ill start with tal. You have been digging in on this and trying to figure out whats going on. What are the ideas floated right now is freeing Convention Delegates who are bound to trump and then so you want to unbound them. How would that work . Well, there are actually several ideas that are put forth, including one school of thought that says theyre not bound at all. This is not exactly one thats picking up a ton of steam and those that say you can already use the rnc rules against the rnc rules. Ultimately, what it looks like, though, this is going to come down to a majority of delegates on the convention floor. The rules committee will be tasked with putting into place the rules for this convention. Right now, the 2012 rules are operating but the first order of business will be figuring out what to do in 2016. Then what that Committee Puts forward, has to be ratified. We are talking about magic 1,237 number again and probably takes that many delegates to do anything to unbind the bindings already in place. I thought we were done with that 1,237 number. No. But we are not done. So, mike, i mean, is this real . Is there any chance that this could work . Look. Its technically possible as she just said and, look, the delegates make the decisions at the convention about the rules, nominee, how theyre going to operate themselves so is it technically possible . Yes. Is it politically likely . I dont think so. Not at this point. I think you would have to have i mean, Something Like 30 or 40 delegates on a phone, i mean, talking 1,237, thats long ways from 1,237. A lot more i think politically would have to happen for donald trump to unbind themselves and turn over what the voters did in the primary. I think its in his hands to stop it from happening and he can Start Performing as the leader of the party and put it to rest and if something was to happen, look at this time and say, wow, this is where it got started . Talk about ed, it would be a revolt among republicans and especially Trump Supporters not taking this lightly. Not at all. But, you know, the argument as tal laid out is only people to make the decisions are delegates elected to the convention and finding 56 of them in the rules Committee Meeting the thursday and friday before the gavel comes down in cleveland and then if you can find 1,237 of them on the floor who are willing to vote for these changes, then you could have an open situation. And most of the people involved in this, make it clear, don, while they may have supported someone like ted cruz or john kasich, in the primaries, not saying they should be the nominee but if anything to compel trump to come to the delegates, the folks hes going to have to win over to get their support, make it clear to them that hes going to hold conservative positions on issues and then become the nominee. They have been very concerned just this past week some of them out the fact calling for changes in gun laws. Thats a total violation of Party Orthodoxy that says that, you know, gun laws are settled and you shouldnt be talking about them or even thinking about changing them. That combined with his comments about the mexican judge in california, theres concern that what he said racist and threatening to use the political power to punish a judge. They said imagine if he tried to do that as president , a total violation of executive power. On principle these people are concerned and they believe they have just enough time over the next month to find enough delegates to support the efforts and comes as he said controversial things, poll numbers dropping and doesnt seem to be doing anything to win them over. Heres my question. Tal, in a moment, but i want to ask mike this. If if this this is leverage. Theyre trying to garner some leverage against donald trump but donald trump and his people have said all along its up to them to come to him, not for him to go to them. Correct . Well, i mean, that might be Donald Trumps position. I actually disagree with that. I think when you lead a party, you have to reach out to the members of the party saying come with me, work together. What can i do to lead you. Not i won the nomination, get in line or else. Or else this sort of things happens. These are not the stories he wants to have in the press. He wants to be talking about Hillary Clinton and winning the general election and i think he has to realize hes in control of whether or not the stories are out there or not. If he focuses the party on Hillary Clinton and barack obama, the party will line up behind him up and down the ticket. They went to fight the democrats and not about him and the types of stories. I think thats in his control. T a l, up against the clock, ill give you the last word, though. Bottom line, it is early to suggest this might happen but a reflection of the very real angst thats among some of the rank and file republicans and shields is right. It would be in trumps interest to listen to that. Yeah. Thank you. I appreciate all of you. Thanks. All right. Coming up, what russian president Vladimir Putin just said about donald trump and the u. S. President ial race. Fareed zakarias conversation with putin next. And then a wounded survivor of the orlando nightclub attack meets the Police Officer who helped rescue him amid the chaos. Stay with us. We asked a group of young people when they thought they should start saving for retirement. Then we asked some older people when they actually did start saving. And alabama county refusing to lower the flags to half staff to honor victims of the massacre at a gay nightclub in orlando. Refusal by officials in coastal Baldwin County after president obama and alabamas governor ordered flags to be lowered. A local commissioner said the flags lowered on memorial day and to commemorate deaths of government officials. Thousands of miles away prominent official made a very public apology to the Lgbt Community and thats utahs Lieutenant Governor spencer cox and spoke at a candle light vigil for victims and his speech went viral. Cox said growing up he wasnt always nice to the kids who were gay. Listen. I regret not treating them with the kindness, dignity and respect the love that they deserved. For that, i sincerely and humbly apologize. There he is joining me right now, Lieutenant Governor spencer cox. Thank you for joining us. Thanks, don. Great to be with you. Youre a 40yearold straight man. I want the know what triggered your change of heart. I wish there was one thing i could point to but its really been kind of a journey over 20 years and specifically getting to know more people from the Lgbt Community, just their love, their kindness, their patience with me, its amazing when you try to reach out and get to know and love someone different than you you find out remarkably that were really not that different and i know that sounds simplistic but i think its a truth and has been in my life. Why do you think i mean, its it seems extraordinary that you would do this, im sure people do it all the time, ive had friends who have done similar things. When i came out. But what exactly are you apologizing for . How did you treat gay people when you were younger . Well, i wasnt, you know, i wasnt a bully. I didnt hate. I wasnt that type of person. But first of all, i didnt know they were gay. I just knew they were different and, again, like teenagers do, sometimes i would, you know, make jokes, say things that were inappropriate. Not necessarily to them. But about them. On occasion. And i certainly didnt go out of my way the try to be friends with them. And thats those are the things that i regret the most and like you said, i think people are changing all the time and i think its okay to talk about it. You have kids, right . I do. I have four kids, yeah, yeah. Did you have to explain your apology and your change of heart to your children . Your four children, right . Yeah. Three boys and a girl. We have had the conversations over the years. This isnt something that just happened. And thats why i so surprising that this is gone viral and was never intended to be that way. And again, i want to make sure it clear this is about the 49 people that tragically lost their lives but if we can have people have conversations with their children and thats the beautiful thing about children and millennial generation, especially. They dont see the same divisions that many of us have seen or grown up seeing over the years and givers me hope for the future. And your fellow plens, how are they reacting to this apology . Im very pleased to say, and again i never expected ed ted this kind of attention, theres nothing but positive comments from the left and the right. Universally. I think thats the crazy thing is that it seems like for whatever reason this is what people have felt and no one really said it and so by giving voice to those feelings, people are feeling more comfortable to have that conversation and ive just received a lot of thanks, very humbly and overwhelming from republicans as well as democrats. Im sure you were nervous doing it and this was in essence a coming out for you. I mean, not necessarily coming out as gay but for you and what were the feelings and emotions that you felt . How do you feel now . What was that process like for you . Well, so first of all i was asked by members of the Lgbt Community to come and to give the speech and i said yes because i was just devastated what had happened and then when i said yes, there was a moment of panic, like, i have no idea what im going to say. And i have no idea why they would want to listen to me. First of all, this is not the type of crowd im usually speaking to and not the type of speaker theyre usually listening to and we are in the middle of Campaign Season and i didnt have time to prepare. About an hour before an im glad because i was able to just write what was in my heart and then get up and give it. I hadnt even read through it and i think if i had taken time i would have overthought it a little bit and thats the problem with politics today. I mean, we just go to our talking points and it doesnt feel authentic and for this crowd, i got to be authentic and they let me be authentic and i appreciate that. Before i let you go, i have to ask you, do you have a message i wonder if youre going to be better coming to gay issues and legislation and votingi inand speaking up for t Lgbt Community but what do you say to republicans because republicans dont have a good track record coming to supporting gay issues . Sure. What i would say to them is, look, lets start where we can. Were not going to afree gree on all the issues. I get that. We never have and thats okay but we have to start looking at each other and caring for each other as individuals, as people. So now because ive been working on the relationships, i can sit down with members of the Lgbt Community and even where we disagree we listen to understand and i think i get more of what theyre trying to do. I think they understand where i differ in some areas but i truly believe that there is commonality and saw that in the state of utah year and a half ago and the religious communities and Lgbt Community sit down together to get protections to the Lgbt Community in housing and in employment. People thought that wouldnt happen in utah and it did. Thats where we need to start. Appreciate it. I have to go. I have breaking news. Thank you very much. Thank you. Revealing details about what the gunman was doing in the weeks leading up to the attack in orlando including preparation involving Bank Accounts and life insuran insurance. Thats next. So as i mentioned before the break we have breaking news now involves the orlando shooter and the behavior before the attack. I want to bring in cnns pamela brown and also drew griffin will join us in a moment. Pamela, what are you learning about possible preparation for this . Reporter hey, don. Were just learning some new information from my Law Enforcement sources at this hour that the gunman clearly took steps in the weeks leading up to this shooting to plan for his death and to make sure his family was taken care of. In fact, don, we have learned that he put some documents in his wifes name, made sure that she had access to his Bank Accounts, made sure that she was taken care of in terms of Life Insurance and so all of these steps are being looked at by Law Enforcement officials as signs of premeditation and in addition we know that he sort of went on a spending spree and spent thousands of dollars on a piece of jewelry for his wife and bought the guns and these are signs that his wife had noticed, she told investigators she noticed that he was spending erratically and claims she didnt know of specific plans of what he was going to do. But that she feared he might do something violent. Also on the note he transferred according to these public documents, transferred the share of a house where his sister and brotherinlaw currently reside to them 10 in april. The family did not return calls when we called them and the fbi looking at this. Investigators dont quite know what to make of this particular aspect but i can tell you the fact he was taking all these steps leading up to the shooting, it was a really cloer indication to investigators that he had been planning this for sometime and wasnt a spur of the moment decision. Don . Exactly. Stand by, pam. I want to bring in drew griffin. As pamela just indicated and according to the reporting from you here, one source saying that this behavior suggests premeditation by mateen. Correct . Reporter thats absolutely right, don. We did reach out to the family of the shooter. I contacted a source, the source said, listen, we have no comment on this. He was specifically referring to the transfer of property. And while this goes on, we can tell you that the fbi has been back here in ft. Pierce going to the Islamic Center this morning and spending an hour there trying to find out any information they could about anyone who knew him, who associated with him, so the fbi still very much on the ground here trying to find anybody who had any connection to this shooter. Don . All right. Drew and pamela with the new conversation saying that this suggested some premeditation on the part of omar mateen leading up to this massacre in the nightclub late saturday night, early sunday morning. Suggesting a premeditation by transferring the house over to his sister and brotherinlaw and also making sure his wife had access to certain documents, Bank Accounts, information and Life Insurance and updating you with the breaking news. Meantime, the griefstricken city of orlando is now saying the final goodbyes to the 49 victims killed in the massacre at the pulse nightclub. Funeral vftss are held today for five of the victims including a couple whose friends say had plans to get married. Visitations today for four others. But healing is also happening at the Parliament House, a gay nightclub a kind of mecca for this grieving community. I want to discuss that now with dan schwab, a manager of the Parliament House. Dan, how are you doing . Im good. How are you . I wish we could have met under better circumstances. It is a lgbtq hotel, bar and club. Its been in orlando for past 40 years. How did you help to set up an event last night . How did that go . It went very well. Actually. We werent sure with all thats going on whether or not we would have a large turnout. We were hoping we would to Show Community support. There were a lot of funerals, obviously, going on, memorials. And obviously, some fear. But we had a busier night than we normally would on latin night at the Parliament House and a very good vibe. People were happy, sad, it was a very good place to be last night. Dan, how important are events like this in a place Like Parliament for your community right now . Theyre very important. You know, i cant emphasize enough how important it is for people to get out of their homes, put aside any fear or hesitation they might have and come out and support, theres a lot of people in need, a lot of people are hurting. They need the support of their friends, their family just to be there and be supportive. Can we discuss this fear a little bit more . We know the immediate aftermath of the shooting the orlando Police Department put an alert out to gay clubs in the area. I was there, i remember people doing it and people were afraid. What are you hearing from your friends and colleagues now . There is a little bit of apprehension from people about coming out. But its been overwhelmingly the thought of we have to be out, we have to be seen. We cant let them win. The worst thing you can do is hide in fear right now. The voice thats not heard is what the true problem is. Dan schwab, thank you very much. Youre very brave and appreciate what youre doing down there at Parliament House. I want to get back to the breaking news, pamela brown also on the ground in orlando. Pamela, you have new information about a warning the fbi received about the gunman . Reporter thats right. In fact, the fbi releasing the statement, don, in the wake of these reports from the owner of the lotus gunworks saying that the gunman came there in may trying to buy a level3 body armor and the owner claims it did tell the fbi about this and the fbi just sent out a statement saying that because the store did not carry that particular style of body armor and referred an unknown individual unware and did not collect any information about him to include name, date of birth, charge card, telephonic information or email address and then after june 12, the statement says the personnel notified the fbi saying that unknown individual who they felt like was acting suspiciously who had visited the store in may resembled the pulse shooter and the fbi making the point while the store did mention it to them in an unrelated case that the fbi closed and mentioned there was this other person coming in to buy the body armor and turn him away, acted suspicious, the store didnt have any other information for the fbi to chase down any leads so the fbi making the point that he didnt make a purchase, there was no license plate number or Surveillance Video to help them track down the individual. Don . Pamela brown, thank you very much. As you can see, the investigation is in full force right now in orlando. You know, the attack in orlando was horrific. But my next guest says it was not the deadliest mass shooting in american history. Not the deadliest mass shooting in american history. Hear why, next. Deadly massacre in orlando called the worst mass shooting in history but authorities investigating and by many in the news media and including cnn this network believes the phrase is understood to mean this, a single shooter against innocents who were not involved with the shooter in any conflict and were attacked. Mass shootings where one gunman opened fire on unarmed civilians who were going about their business at work, at school, at their church. But there are many who disagree including my next two guests, veteran jounlist and author, Roger Witherspoon writing on civil rights and author of Martin Luther king jr. To the mounta mountaintop and an author of what blood wont tell. Ariella, i know youre joining us via skype. You both say what happened in orlando is not the worst mass shooting in u. S. History. What in your opinion makes that statement inaccurate . Every word of it. You are deliberately ignoring all of the massacres in history, starting in the 1600s. Okay. Ariella, why do you think its inaccurate . Yes. If you qualify it with single shooter, its an accurate statement. I wrote that its not the deadliest mass shooting because there has been a history of racially motivated, as well as antigay, Mass Shootings and burnings going back to the massacre at wounded knee in 1890, race riots in the early 20th century, east st. Louis as many as 200 or 300 africanamericans were murdered by shooting, burning, other forms of killing. The massacre in tulsa, oklahoma, in 1921. So there is this longer history of hatredmotivated killings that i think its important to see as the Historical Context of what happened in orlando. Does it make a difference that those who are either wrongly in those cases police or military action and not one shooter, ariela . So, the action the massacre of wounded knee was the calvary but most of the massacres that im talking about that happened in cities across the united states, north and south, whether it was tulsa, oklahoma, rosewood, florida, those were carried out by private individuals. They fit most of the definition that youve handed out. They were by people who didnt have an individual grievance against the people they were shooting. They were motivated by bigotry and hatred. Okay. I want to give roger a chance to weigh in on this. Robber, youve accused the media of not doing their homework. Why is the shooting of one not acceptable in this instance . First of all, don, youre a journalist. And one has to be accurate. If you want to say by one shooter, then to say that. But to simply have a blanket statement, the worst shooting in american history, its a lie not to. The worst mass shooting in american history, the worst terrorist attack since 9 11. But go on. You all never said that. The cover of a number of newspapers and npr never had a caveat, never had a time frame, just simply the worst mass shooting in u. S. History. Thats simply not true. If you go back to 1873, surrounded by a group of whites who killed 103 of them. Two of the people there were actually convicted in a case that came to be known in the u. S. Versus crudeshank and the Supreme Court ruled it out saying that it applies to state action and not to individuals and that gave free rein to the ku klux klan which is what they did for the next 60 years. You cant dismiss that by saying, well, we werent referring to that. If you werent referring to that, dont say it. If you say in all u. S. History, then you own all of u. S. History. Theres been a lot of discussion about this, especially on social media and online and i think its important to have this conversation. Thank you very much, roger, ariela, appreciate that.
