Skies everywhere have been turning purple. People running everywhere to remember the genius of prince and his artistry, including the president of the United States. I love prince because he put out great music and he was a great performer. I didnt know him well. He came to perform at the white house last year and was extraordinary. And creative and original. And full of energy. And so, its a remarkable loss and im staying at winfield. The u. S. Ambassadors residence. It so happens our ambassador has a turntable and so this morning we played purple rain and delirious just to get warmed up before we left the house for important bilateral meetings like this. Our ambassador has a turntable. And by the way, i mean, these pictures coming in from all the memorials, the flowers, the candles enveloping his home, paisley park. Just west of minneapolis. And this billboard cover, a tribute to a man who topped charts and rocked souls. There were allnight parties in brooklyn, outside of spike lees home and minneapolis where prince played to stoonding room only crowds and the people that admired prince, feeling his loss today and some too distraught. Watch what happened with stevie wonder. The heart break is to see this man whos so talented be taken away from us but i know that the almighty god has far greater things for him to did. Is there any song you want to sing a little of or play a little of . I dont want to put you on the spot if youre not up for it. Yeah. I think i would probably break down. Okay. If i do a song right now. But, you know, he was incredible. And im just glad that i was able to say to him, i love you the last time i saw him. Hmm. I can tell you that a little later on he did play and you will hear it later on. Right now, what every prince fan wants the know is what happened . How did we lose such a musical legend at age 57 . An autopsy is under way and two hours from now we could learn more about what happened when the local Sheriffs Department is holding a News Conference. Stay tuned for that. Lets begin with Stephanie Elam outside of paisley park with more on the investigation and the stream of fans, i see the purple balloons, stephanie. Set the scene for us. Reporter thats right, brooke. Its just its awe inspiring to see the people coming out here. Im here since the middle of the night. You can see how people are coming out here. Theyve been coming since the sun has come up. Continuing their procession here to pay respects. So many people showing up wearing purple. So many people bringing their children in purple. You see people bringing flowers, theres notes and even art work that people out here because this was really prince was a native son. Hes from minnesota. He never left. He always counted this as his home. And thats one of the things that people believe thats why he stayed here was the very fact that he could be himself. People would see him out and around in town. He would ask for some privacy and they gave it to him. He would go and take care of errands like anybody else and kind of crazy talking about a superstar known throughout the world for his music. Music that is influenced so many artists. Justin timberlake with a statement just related to that, that prince is a part of each one of his songs. Brooke, you would listen to a song and like that sounds like prince. Influenced by prince. Oh yeah. Reporter you would hear that message. Definitely. So the loss being felt here may be a little harder just because they were so proud that this iconic artist continued to call minnesota home. Hmm, hmm. Yeah. Talking about this for two hours yesterday, singing every word to every song we played for folks all around the world. Stephanie elam, thank you so much. You know, the power of prince, his energy, you feel it everywhere, even on broadway. The casts couldnt contain themselves after the final shows last night. Singer and oscar award winner Jennifer Hudson leading the crowd in purple rain. All i wanted to see purple rain purple rain purple rain purple rain purple rain yeah purple rain purple rain only want to see you in that purple rain oh no lets go lets go crazy lets get nuts lets go hmm. Princes imagine industry touched so many even in the galaxies far, far away. Lets show you this purple nebula. Nasa took a photo and tweeted it in princes honor. Joining me now former access hollywood host and fusion executive director. So nice to talk to you. I hate the circumstances. Were all feeling it. You wrote a beautiful piece talking about the princes startling contradictory image. Slithered into the american consciousness. Talk to me about that. And how, you know, you write about his blackness and his sexuality. Well, he was really sexy from his head down to his toes. And i think it was part of us core part of the self expression. But it wasnt aggressive. It was flirty. It was seductive. It was respectful of women and thats part of what made him such an icon. Shawn, you went to what . One of his parties. Tell me about that. You know, i was fine, brooke, right before i started this interview but seeing all those tributes now i know. Good bumps. But yeah. Gives me goose bumps and brings just everything back. Yeah. I think maybe i went to maybe 25 concerts. Prince is doing a string of concerts here in l. A. A few years ago and i think i went like every single night. There was one night i didnt go and i was in hi hometown of detroit and i got a call from him, his assistant that said, prince want you to introduce him on stage tonight. Im like, oh great. One night im not there. I said im no sorry but im away. You know, gosh. I mean, i cant i cant tell you, brooke, about the community of people that prince brought together. This is one thing that i hadnt had a chance to say yet in the interviews im doing. Ive been reaching out to my friends who were personal friends of princes, also, and we feel this loss because we would always, you know, come to his house. He would gather all of us. You know, he would throw a party. We would all be there. We knew we would see each other the next time at princes place. Or we would see each other at his house at a concert. Or at dinner. Something like that. And that sense of community that we had, the nuclear is now its now gone. And thats really, really tough. To really grasp and realize its no longer going to be. I love how hearing that, he brought the people together, i was talking to a friend of a friend, as well, saying after shows in a hotel room and get this phone call from someone saying, show up in the lobby at the time. Driven to this place and then a huge party this hes bringing all these people together and also, dodai, you bring up the fact that he was a gemini and how that he epitomized this duality. Explain. Yes. I think he was full of contradictions. He could play at the piano very softly but also just shred on guitar. And he would have lyrics about, you know, am i a man or woman, straight or gay . Inhabiting that the dual nature of his zodiak sign. And how you say, you know, no black man would wear no straight black man to wear makeup let alone have women, you know, falling at his feet. He looked gorgeous. He was so sexy. Shaun, i was talking to Latoya Jackson yesterday on tv saying to me how it all sort of brought back the death of her brother, and youre saying that when Michael Jackson died it crushed prince. Right . Right, right. I was working at that time, i was working for my old show access hollywood and when michael died, you know, i reached out to prince as a reporter and as a friend. And i remember his assistant was saying, you know, this is hes not hes not really sure how he feels because this was a death that really impacted him and also made him aware of his own mortality. He saw that all of the accolades that we were giving that people, the world was giving Michael Jackson and i think it even made him if i could speak for him, i think it even made him more aware of how people revered him an how they looked at him. Do you think that changed him at all . Pardon me . Do you think it changed him at all . You know, he did not personally speak with me about those kinds of feelings, prince would really keep inside. But he i remember him telling us stories about Michael Jackson and how, you know, they had this i dont know if you would call it a friendship but it was definitely a Mutual Respect that those two had for each other. And, you know, he was when you talk about what things change prince, the fact that he changed so many of us, is what i really focus on. He was always i dont know, brooke. If you heard me talk about this before but he was always pushing us. I mean, the people in his circle who he would allow in his inner circle and i mean, there have been times when it was just me, prince and one other person and we would have these long, very long intimate conversations and he was always pushing us to do better. To be better. To level up. As i like to call it. And to use our platform to help other people, like what are you doing to change the world . He didnt want to have the quickest way to lose princes attention was to just, like, talk about the weather. Just something light or just, you know, something with no substance. He wanted to have really deep conversations with the people that he was around. He wanted to talk about changing the world and he wanted you to bring it because he brought it. Professionalism. Discipline. Were talking to someone later who started his vault who i know will tell me tales of just how exceptional he was and how he was so involved in just every aspect of his life, business, everything. Thank you both. Thank you so much. And again, as we continue to hear these incredible anecdotes,s a getting more on the investigation into princes death. That News Conference coming up in a bit. The super stars life was full of love and love lost. Randi kaye has more. Nobody quit reporter she was the drummer and then fiancee. Sheila e said, somewhere in the middle of a european tour, prince mouthed to her during a song, marry me and the answer was yes. The two reportedly met at one of his concerts in 1978. I was walking backstage to introduce myself and he was in the mirror and he shook hi hand and goes, i know who you are. He says, im following your career. Reporter she later signed a contract with the Production Company and prince oversaw her first album the glamorous life. Without love it aint much another of princes loves was his protege denise matthews. Former model began dating prince after meeting him at the American Music awards in the 1980s. Jet magazine claimed prince was the only man she ever truly loved. Prince called her vanity and built vanity 6 around her encouraging her to be sexy and record songs as nasty girl. After several years together, she and prince split. When she died earlier this year, he dedicated a song to her on tour. Madonna also had a relationship of sorts with prince. The two dated briefly back in 1985. Prince later helped produce her 1989 album like a prayer which he was also featured on. They sang a duet for the track love song. Years later, the friendship soured. Though just last fall madonna attended one of princes famous late night jam sess at paisley park in minnesota. After her own concert, she grabbed a vip seat as prince took the stage for his own 2 00 a. M. Show. Prince met the stunning Carmen Elektra at 18 around 1990. They dated for a while and prince produced a rap album for her. It was prince who decided she should change her name to carmen. She recalled how it happened to oprah. The name of the song was carmen on top. My names tara so i was confused. I loved the song. I loved it but he said, uhhuh. Youre not tara. Youre not tara. Youre carmen. Reporter princes first wife called him her first crush. I got married when i was 22. I cant pinpoint a time when it became romantic. I think it evolved. You know . Through the heavens. I dont know. Reporter as she tells it, they first met when he asked her backstage at a concert. She was 16. She eventually joined his band and the two started seriously dating. They married on valentines day in 1996. Prince was smitten so its no surprise she inspired many of his songs including the most beautiful girl in the world. Could you be the most beautiful girl in the world but the marriage wasnt meant to be. The couple lost two children, one son lived for only a week. The other was a miscarriage. She told reporters it was hard to move forward as a couple after that. They split in 1998 and divorced in 2000. Prince tried marriage again in 2001 marrying manualla. People reported they met working for a charitable foundation. He was 43. She was just 24. When they tied the knot, the magazine reported his new wife took his last name nelson which the singer never used. This marriage reportedly lasted five years. After which she filed for an amickible divorce. Randi kaye, cnn, new york. From prince the lover to the creator, he made a lot of music. Reportedly 39 albums during his life. But that is far from all of his works. Prince had what is known as the vault to stash secret music never released. With me now, the woman that started the vault, the sound engineer. Susan, thank you so much for taking the time today. Thank you for having me. So this was take me back. What, 83 . Just he had a lot of loose tapes lying around and you said, hang on a second, we need to put this somewhere . When i joined him in 83 it was before we built paisley park and there was a warehouse he rehearsed and he was amassing tapes pretty quickly and asked me to grab this title and that one and i realized i needed to be able to find them and i started to bring them together, getting them in one room and eventually we had to rent a stoirch facility, a document Storage Facility just near the rehearsal space so that we could have all the tapes in a safe place and we began cataloging them then. Thats when as we were doing the blueprints for paisley park, the idea came up of making a not only a tape Storage Space but one that could serve as just a protector of some of the things that belonged to his legacy. So take me inside paisley park and inside of this vault. How big is it . How many tapes . Cds . What have you. Okay. Im relying on memory. Its been a long time since ive been there. Early mid90s since i was there and may have changed but it was the size of a really large bank vault. Maybe a master bedroom in a home. The door is like a vault door. It was underground and it could serve as a storm shelter if there was a tornado warning. No kidding. Rows and rows oh yeah. Rows of steel shelves and packed with analog tapes in those days. When it was obvious analog was dead and working in digital, i suppose, i would hope someone from princes crew would have transferred those analog tapes to digital and taking up far less space but for all i know theyre still there. How many people do you think have the combination to get in the vault . Oh, i dont know. Im sorry. I cant answer this question for you. I assume whoever is managing paisley park. Certainly must be able to get in and out. I assume that whoever is his head engineer would also have full access because thats what you would need to do, run in and grab stuff. But now, i mean, for the past 15 years, i would also assume that he would be storing things in secure servers somewhere. Uhhuh. Talk about, you know, hearing about princes perfectionism, you know, really involved in every aspect of his work, his business, the instrumentation, everything. But you have a note, what, for Young Musicians he wasnt a perfectionist everywhere. Of course. Yes. A lot of musicians may feel that perfectionism is the Gold Standard and what you want to aim for and can hold you back because youll never get everything perfect. You have to call it done at some point and release your creations. He was prince was a perfectionist with the execution of his music. It was the timing and the pitch were perfect, perfect, per feck. He was in the time i worked for him not at all a perfectionist about the sound quality. Believe me, a lot of corners were cut. Susan rogers, i am so sorry you lost a friend and thank you so much. Im hanging on all these different stories and details. I think everyone is watching. Thank you so much. Thank you. Still ahead, we know with princes autopsy under way, well talk more about the investigation into his death and the events leading up to him being found unresponsive in an elevator at that paisley park studio. Get ready for the remaking of donald trump. His top adviser telling the rnc the brash off the cuff trump is an act. Adviser Paul Manafort saying that trumps sakt n his word evolving into something more professional. Listen to this audio of a closed door meeting obtained by cnn. Trump is an outsider. Many of you dont know hes sitting in a room, talking business and hes talking politics, in a private room, its a different persona. Hes out on the stage talking about the kinds of things hes talking about stuff, hes projecting an image thats for that purpose. The part hes been playing is evolving into the part that now youve been expecting but he wasnt ready for. Lets bring in pax hardy and lonnie chen. Gentlemen, welcome. And pax, lets begin wh you on the notion of evolving. Would you as a trump supporter feel betrayed if this is all an act . Absolutely not. You know, he stepped into this race ten months ago as a nonpolitician. He positioned in a cut throat Party Primary of 17 candidates. Positioned himself as the frontrunner. It happened. He started making it happen. I was looking the other day at some reruns of the apprentice. He knows showbiz and how to work the media and a crowd. I would not have expected anything less of him to once hes repositioning himself as a Party Nominee for a national election, hes going to, you know, hes going to start trying the appeal to a much wider audience. Im sure there have been democrats and independents which, by the way, flipping left and right to support him, many people theyve only been seeing the head lines and the sound bites and now he reaches out an appealing to these people and he is going to be more statesmanlike. This is great. I have seen brilliance in his strategy. Hes a smart guy. He knows exactly what hes doing. I want to come back to that point in a minute. Lonnie, i have to ask you, 2012 and your candidate governor romney and moments caught on tape, the 47 bit and didnt go well for him and im assuming youll agree that this, this audio tape wont hurt trump like it did mitt romney. Im curious why that is. Whens the difference . Well, brooke, you know i think that donald trump is held to a different standard. First of all. Second of all, he managed to get away with apostasies. Now hes talking about being a different candidate and always the problem, brooke, with donald trump. Thes no core there. That hes not a conservative. His record is all over the map. His statements on issues are all over the map, too. This is what worries conservatives. This just plays into that narrative. I tend to agree its not going to hurt him. The interesting thing to see, though, is going to be as he transitions from the pirate ship to the Aircraft Carrier campaign how that transition will go. Im not convinced to go well. Well, on that point, pax, respond to that sort of and you mentioned showbiz and critics saying he is just a reality tv, you know, brilliant tv producer and puts of tn act and this gives whoever the democratic nominee more fodder, more material that this is, you know, the jekyll and hyde, a reality tv guy. Pat buchanan said a couple of days ago Trump Supporters are the future of the gop, not the never trump or the cruz supporters. I think its fantastic. You know . Hes donald trump representing a much more inclusive party. Hes appealing to moderate democrats. Hes appealing to independents. You know . What about those on the far right . Starting to go more to the middle ato peel to more folks, why wont that, you know, be drawback for those who have been, you know, passionate about trump as hes been farther on the side of the spectrum . I hear over and over again this this is particularly coming from ted cruz supporter. Donald trumps not a real conservative. Donald trump is a very moderate republican. If you take away the personality, you take away the bomba bombast, hes a moderate republican. Hes very people trust him in business. People trust him on the economy. People hes got decades of real world experience with a phenomenal record of personal success. You know . This is what people are attracted to. Theyre attracted to, you know, youve got ted cruz going aplektic about the comments on the bathroom issue. You know, theyre like, these are not the priorities facing this country. The priorities facing this country are creating jobs, the economy, immigration, building our military. These are things we trust donald trump. I met donald trump last week. Hes a phenomenal personal success. And he doesnt have to be doing this and doing it because he cares about this country and if we can hes offering his services to this country, the same, you know, the same intellect thats created an Incredible Company for himself. Okay. Mentor the country. I har you and not everyone agrees but i appreciate your perspecti perspective. I wanted to talk to a trump supporter but, lonnie, to you, on Reince Priebus the chair of the rnc, he was at an rnc meeting in florida and slammed the Never Trump Movement and calling for unity within the Republican Party. Quoting him, he said, it is essential to victory in november that we all support our candidate. This goes for everyone, qul youre a county party chairman, an rnc member or a president ial candidate. Politics is a team sport and we cant win unless we rally around whoever becomes the nominee. What has to happen so that, you know, donald trump whens been calling over and over the process rigged and rnc to i dont know. Have a kumbaya. You know, i dont know that its possible for donald trump to unify the Republican Party and what it really goes back to is if you look at issue after issue, donald trump has taken positions that simply are not conservative. And this is not an argument thats coming from ted cruz conservatives. This is an argument from all conservatives. The reality is that donald trump has a problem uniting the party because he does take on in many cases views that run counter to what most republicans believe so i recognize the chair trying to do. Of course hes trying to unify the party. Win an election. Ultimately beat Hillary Clinton. But were not going to do it with donald trump. I think thats one of the issues the never trump folks latching on to it and done it with some success and wisconsin. Its going to take a miracle for donald trump to reach 1,237 before the convention. Probably not going to get there. Well see. Well see. Lonnie, pax, well leave it and talk again. Thank you. Coming up, tri butds pouring in for the legendary prince, we are now learning the examiners autopsy is completed. Well talk to sanjay gupta about princes health in recent months. You got that look when they thought they should westart saving for retirement. Le then we asked some older people when they actually did start saving. Once i left the hospital after a dvt blood clot. What about my wife. What were building together. And could this happen again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . I spoke to my doctor and she told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. But eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless you doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. We learned that, that happened minutes ago. Wets bring in cnn chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta with more. Were waiting for some details, theres a News Conference in a little while. What is the latest that you know . The latest is what you said. This autopsy took about four hours and, you know, they do a pretty thorough examination. We know that the princes body will go back to his family at this point. What i would say, brooke, is that they probably are going to be cautious in releasing anymore details. They may certainly know more than a few hours ago but they have to piece it together with so many things. Theres an autopsy, toxicology. Looking at blood. Those tests sometimes have to be sent off. What are you looking for, exactly . How much are you looking for . Theres the pieces of the puzzle and then layer it all on top of what his life is like. Did he have any other medical problems. Whens the last weeks been like . Sick and recovered and sick again. Its a bit confusing and part of the reason that he had this newspaper is because hes a 57yearold man. Pretty young. Who had sort of an unexplained death. And thats typically what triggered a medical investigation. How long might it be until we really know . They want to be sure and toxology means doing the tests again, confirming it. Making sure and making sure it fits f. You see a test result completely abnormal, is there anything else in the life to suggest its true or retested . What i would say is autopsy results from the autopsy itself maybe several days. Toxicology can sometimes take weeks to come back and may not release anything until they have everything to say. To be safe they should hold off. Sanjay, thank you so much. For now, again, waiting for the News Conference. Well take it live. Next, a member of princes band revolution dr. Fink joins me next. His stories about early days of prince. Do not miss this. When doves cry. Kiss and lets go crazy all on the list. Princes impact on culture and music far beyond the songs. The style, his funk, he conducted the business, this is all part of legacy for fans and musicians around the would. Joining me, matt fink. He was a member of princes band the revolution for 12 years. Way back in the early 80s. So awesome to have you join us, sir. Kamau bell, nice to see, you you as well. Matt fink, dr. Fink, my condolences to you. I cannot imagine how you feel. I know you have a band purple experience and youre in touring, in chicago tonight. Its tribute concert for your late friend. But can you take me back and tell me a story from the early 80s backstage . Tell me an anecdote. Well, prince was quite the practical joker at times. And he wanted the band to play a joke on one of the local music critics because they were going to come back and interview prince backstage before a show. And i believe this was might have been either the controversy tour or even an earlier one, maybe bierty mi tdirty mind. I cant remember. But he asked all of us to suddenly get into a major fight amongst ourselves in the background while hes doing the interview in the dressing room, start yelling at one at each other and throwing furniture around. In order to disrupt the interview and did you . Oh yeah. Oh yes, we did. It was all in good fun. Oh my gosh. Thats what im hearing so much of his sense of humor. Purple rain. You were in the Academy Award winning film. What the heck was that like working on that and what do you make of today, just the impact in 2016 of this man and his work . Well, for all of us growing up in minneapolis to be in a film was most exciting thing that could possibly happen. We didnt grow up in hollywood or new york. And to be from that part of the country and being involved in such a big project, it was extremely exciting and a great learning experience. And, you know, what more can you say . Its a dream come true when those kind of things happen for young mid western boys, you know . Estate is there i speak volumes of prince the man and the minnesotan. Kamau, to you, ive listened to you talking about him and what strikes me is how, you know, his business accumen and fight the good fight and control of his stuff and fighting music labels. You agree with that, yeah . Yeah. I think first of all his music is incredible. Incredible. We know everything about everybody now and he had a sense of mystery around him and he fought for artists. We wanted to control his own art and that sort of teaches all artists not that you make the art but you can control it afterwards and thats a real lesson. Like you put up the stop 10, 11 songs on itunes, you have to pay for them. We cant go to spotify and listen to prince. We have to pay for him. He taught us the art is have and we should have to pay for it if we want to experience it. Uhhuh. Dr. Fink, back to you, when you step on that stage tonight in chicago and you play part of this catalog, how are you how will you feel . Well, hmm, excuse me, just the thought of that brings tears to my eyes. So its really hard. You are watching cnn. Thank you so much for being with me on this friday afternoon. Im brooke baldwin. We begin this hour on the life and legacy of prince. Celebrated the world over. I can tell you as far as the investigation goes, the autopsy is complete. We are waiting for the first News Conference about the death. That should begin moments from now. Well take that live. While we wait for that, i want you to look at some of the front pages of newspapers here. Prince gracing the cover, the world over. Memorials, growing by the hour. The flowers. Photos. Blanketing his home paisley park. Watching now as the world has turned purple. And look at this. Want to show you cover of the new yorker raining purple. Even the president of the United States today speaking in london. How he honored princes memory. I love prince because he put out great music and he was a great performer. I didnt know him well. He came to perform at the white house last year and was extraordinary. And creative and original. And full of energy. And so, its remarkable loss and im staying at winfield house, the u. S. Ambassadors residence. It so happens our ambassador has a turntable and so this mornin we played purple rain and delirio delirious just to get warmed up before we left the house for important bilateral meetings like this. How about that . President jamming to prince this morning. Stephanie elam is there outside of the paisley park estate with the stream of fans and purple balloons behind you. We know the autopsy is complete. When do you think we will know details . Reporter its not going to be soon enough for anyone who really wanted the know. I can tell you that, brooke. Four hours long the autopsy today but the results of this testing and the toxicology results and this is in any case, not just specific to prince. It will take probably a couple of weeks before we hear the results of that. We wont know why and doesnt help anyone here but still what is helping people, brooke, take a look behind me, the number of people coming out to pay respects for prince. What i have been struck by is the fact that the people that are coming out here are so diverse. You see people from all generations. You see people wearing purple. You see kids out here with their parents. People from all walks of life. Youre seeing people representing different races and colors and creeds and whens so wonderful about music. Right . The great unifier. Its a language we can understand and feel no matter what language we actually speak. Or else i would have donned the purple myself today. Thank you so much. We are watching and waiting for a News Conference, the first in the wake of the 57yearolds death. Birds of a feather flock together and sometimes geniuses jam together. Watch prince do his thing with the legendary james brown and late king of pop Michael Jackson. Michael told the godfather to bring prince on stage. This was back in the early 80s. Give him a big round of applause because he insisted that i introduce prince. You here . Prince all right. Prince, you got to do something. You got to do something. Lets bring in contributing editor to Rolling Stone alvin right. Back with us kamau bell. Welcome to both of you. Alan, to you. We know that prince last couple of weeks and months putting on the solo shows, just him, piano. He was here in atlanta last week. Did a late Night Saturday performance. Paisley park after dark. Looking strong. Playing amazingly. You know, told a fan apparently on saturday, save your prayers for me at least for a couple of days. What do you think has been going on these last few weeks with him . Well, i dont know. I mean, i know the same information we all have that there were a couple of canceled shows, that this that his plane had to make an emergency stop coming back from those atlanta dates. But as you know, we hear rumors and stories about these kinds of celebrities all the time. Wre always hearing that people like this are sick, theyre dying, some terrible thing and resurfaced over the weekend, photos of him riding his bike. You know, i think we all sort of thought, okay, not big deal. I guess he will be okay and now wait and like everyone else and see what the autopsy tells us and see if we can make any sense out of this. Weve been talking about his music, sense of humor, perfectionism and his work, the vault, the catalog that the world doesnt know. Kamau you want to talk about prince and how he embraced his blackness. That side of him, hes known for genre crossing and boundary crossing and he is an africanamerican man and he showed that you can define your own version of blackness and that through reaches through the races and genres, he was clearly a black man and that was a great example for black people because theres often black people to be in a box or black a certain way and prince said you can define your blackness and for me thats a powerful lesson to learn. I was talking to a writer last hour saying he was a black man who wore makeup and who, you know, probably could walk in heels better than i can and women were falling all over for him. And it made a lot of really manly men start to wear heels and makeup. Thats a you know, think about the lines from controversy. Am i straight or gay . Am i black or white . Do i believe in god or me . Im going the try a little bit of it all while im here. He understood the power of mystery, the power of secrecy and maintaining an aura and not turning over all your cards and revealing everything about yourself. We live in a world where everybody instagrams every cup of coffee they have and this was a guy who knew that, you know, one way to be sure youre not overexposed is to make sure theyre still asking questions, curious. They still want to try to figure out who you are and what youre all about. Im a music nerd and a Fleetwood Mac fan and didnt realize the back story of purple rain and apparently they were friends because he played synthesizer on her hit stand back and then he said, listen, write some lyrics. She passed. Said it was too long and he gave it a crack and that instrumental became purple rain. That is all true. All told in my book. Yes. He and stevie nicks had a raise your lighters power balad and wrote the melody and said maybe you want to write something. She said she listened to it, too big and too much and his and said you have to handle this one. And what came out of that was purple rain. Bob seagers biggest hit songs. Tell me, alan, one more story. Tell you one more story . The great thing to me the version of purple rain we know from the album and the hit and burned in our brain, that was the first time that he played that song on a stage. And it was the very first show that wendy was the new guitar player and think about as a band leader, as a disciplinarian what it is to get your band in such great shape that the first time they go out and play a song like that, the first time on stage, they play the perfect definitive version f. You go and listen to the, you know, the bootlegs of that show in 1983, you recognize all of the things that are in the version thats released, edited, theres a verse out, the guitar solo cut down a little bit and nothing else touched from that recording. The idea that you could nail something that hard first time out i think tells you the way he approached the music and leading a band. I could hear everyone clicking and trying to google and finding the bootlegs of which you speak. Youtube, he would pull it down after it went up and he doesnt leave stuff up there. Maybe today not at diligent. Today lets ask about mrs. Kamau bell because i understand it played a role in your courtship. Well, yeah. When i met my wife, she was a little bit younger than me and missed the purple rain thing. She was a little kid. So part of our getting to know each other, like, were not going to date unless you watch purple rain and lie about loving it otherwise its a problem. And we talked about this last night on the phone. She is at home and im here in new york and we were talking about the early courtship is my passion for purple rain and her adopting bite the family. Prince a big part of my relationship with my wife, too. She was a big prince fan and saw him before i did but by the time we got together, going deep into the records got us started down the right path, too. Incredible. I love it. I can relate all the same. Thank you so much. And please watch the premier of kamaus show called united shades of america this sunday and in the first episode, kamau is face to face with the kkk. Do not miss it. Coming up next, sex and music, princes love life was complicated. Hear about the ladies he fell for and did you know he has a son . Just another manic monday wish it were sunday stand back stand back in the middle of my room i might hear from you nothing compares nothing compares to you even in the summertime i feel for you i i i think i love you let me rock you from the songs for others and to the songs he could only perform, a fan recorded some of the performance in atlanta. Love to see you this friendship will never end purple rain purple rain oh yeah prince was a prolific creator of music but there is so much more we havent heard. A former sound engineer of princes told me just last hour theres a stash of princes work thats never been released and known at his paisley park studio as the vault and the place where its housed as the estate an i imagine only a few people have the combination to get in there. With me now, brent fisher, a composer to add orchestration to the work for 30 years. Brent, im so sorry for the loss of just an incredible, incredible man. Only had the privilege of seeing him perform once but i want to get to the vault in just a second. But you performed on stage with him, 2004. Grammys. Beyonce, prince. What was that like . Yeah. My late father provided many arrangements for prince including much of the unreleased material but this was a medley of prince and beyonce songs an arrangement for and i was performing in the orchestra with prince and beyonce at the opening song for the 2004 grammys and its one of the seminole moments in grammys history and a great honor to be part of sitting during commercials in the telecast they play that. Thats one of the grammy moment that is they play repeatedly every year. It was it was a really wonderful honor and im grateful for the association of prince for many so years. Thats what i would call me a pinch me moment. Yeah. We played a number of songs with other artists, songs that prince, you know, wrote for them. And im wondering how would he decide . Would you know . Why not just sing them himself . Yes. That that will be forever his secret. I think he produced a lot of people. I worked on the first album that celine dion did in english produced by prince and a lot of i think he had a lot of interests. You know . And there were so many people that he wanted to collaborate with. I remember in all the time that he was sending us songs to work on he never repeated himself, nothing ever became, you know, stale or boring. It was always mixing genres, very creative. You know . Creativity was the most important thing to him. Rather than genre. And so mixing all those genres i think was just natural and so working with so many different artists and producing them was wonderful experience for him and it was also an honor for us to be involved on our end. Can we talk about the vault . The vault which is at his paisley park studio. Sure. And i mean, do you even know how much music exists of his that the world has never heard . I would say its a lot. As far as i knew, there were many times in his life where he would just, you know, wake up in the morning and Start Recording. And he might actually erase something after he was done recording it because he didnt like the way it came out, even if everybody else in the room was happy with it. It was his final decision. And we were sent music by him all the time to add orchestras to. And we never knew whether something was going to be released or not. It was most of it like i said has not been released as of this point. So i would imagine there must be i could only guess. Hundreds of songs in there. Hmm. Thats a lot of music. A friend of his yesterday saying he was found unresponsive in the elevator in his studio and that he was probably on his way to go make music. Yeah. I would imagine so. Thats that was his whole life. You know . He would wake up and Start Recording and he wouldnt go to sleep until he stopped. Until he was finished. Wow. Brent fischer, so sorry for the loss of your friend but thank you so much for sharing some stories, really appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. At the top of the hour, we know that the sheriff investigating princes death holding a News Conference. Well bring it to you live. First time hearing publicly from authorities in the wake of his passing too soon. But next, hear leaked audio of inside a meeting of Donald Trumps new Convention Manager and republican insiders. He seems to suggest that drump we have seen on the campaign trail is an act. Thousands of people came out today to run the race for retirement. So we asked them. Are you completely prepared for retirement . Okay, mostly prepared . Could you save 1 more of your income . It doesnt sound like much, but saving an additional 1 now, could make a big difference over time. Im going to be even better about saving. You can do it, it helps in the long run. Prudential bring your challenges want to come up on some tape and show you. Little bit of rain in london. This is moments ago. You see president obama and first Lady Michelle shaking hands. Theyre having dinner at kensington palace. Surprise someone else showed up, as well. Joining them. Prince harry. So theyre having dinner. And i can tell you that this is not an official state event. You saw the joint News Conference the president held with the pm David Cameron and touched on princes passing and said they were listening to the ambassador who apparently had turntables listening to princes music to start the day and also earlier this morning, actually right around noontime, the president and first lady with lunch at Windsor Castle with the queen. You have a snapshot of london on this friday. Bring it back here and politics and cnn has an audio tape and clearly hear Donald Trumps top adviser saying trumps personality is a performance. Not actually who he is in private. This tape comes from a closed door meeting between trump adviser Paul Manafort and the Republican National committee. Listen. Trump is an outsider. Many of you dont know. Hes sitting in a room, talking business and hes talking politics, private room, its different persona. Out on the stage, talking about the kinds of things hes talking about and stuff, he is projecting an image for that purpose. The part hes playing is evolving into the part now that you have been expecting an he wasnt ready for. Let me bring in cnn political commentator, michael smir ckoni. Hearing this, i think how is that going to sit with trump fan faithful . Well, when i hear it, i say, i knew it i absolutely knew that was the real donald trump. The surprise is that manafort would say it. Brooke, hes a very sophisticated player. Not on accident. Not an accident. An interpretation of this is the pivot toward the fall has begun. They need to say that to convince independents, moderates that its okay to be for donald trump. Hes not the guy that hes been made out to be. Look. I like the independent trump. And take a look at what happened yesterday. He made the comments that he made which distinguished himself. North carolina on the North Carolina bathroom issue. So to me, thats probably the real donald trump. That is a moderate donald trump. Thats a trump to win a general but for some of the baggage. Wow. So, theres that. You, sir, you live in philadelphia. You sat down with a number of former ds who became rs to understand why people in the state of pennsylvania switched parties. What did you find snout. Its true. About 90,000 brand new members of the Republican Party just since january 1, and we put about a dozen of them in a room and wanted to find out, well, what exactly drew you to the gop so that you could vote on tuesday . I think we have a clip of it that we can play. Lets take a listen. So all but joe voted for barack obama at least once. At least once. At least once. Im a middle class mechanic all my life. Im a democrat for over 25 years now. And the last eight years i just feel that i dont know. I just feel that president obama sits at his desk all day with isis and everything. I just i wanted to switch. I just felt like, you know, i needed to switch parties. Let me ask this. How many of you im not saying to lock in but how many of you would consider voting for Hillary Clinton . Would consider . Would consider. Sure. Would consider voting for Hillary Clinton. To the rest five hands, the rest of you no way . Shes dead to you politically . How many of you would consider voting for Bernie Sanders . One more hand. Now, joe, interestingly, youd consider voting for bernie and not hillary. How come . Hillary in my opinion is out for hillary. Shes been planning this for eight years. She has everything nailed. She has the experts you can buy. Shes got the pledge delegates. What donald trump has done has disrupted the entire system. Clark, what are you sitting there thinking . I dont think donald trump wants to be president , to govern if nation. I think he wants to run for president. I think that were going to learn at the end its a 1 bet of him and another rich guy. Just like trading places. Oh my gosh. I love this. Tell me more. Okay. Im going do give away the ending. They hate me on my own show. Heres the bottom line. They joined the Republican Party because of donald trump. Some to vote for him and some to vote against him. Tuesday in pennsylvania, the most important of the midatlantic states, is a referendum on trump. No kidding. So quickly, as you pointed out last friday the beauty contest. No matter how they vote, the delegates most of them are unbound. 54 of the 71, brooke, who will represent pennsylvania are untethered so it is the largest Unaffiliated Group of delegates in the country. If trump is close and not at 1,237 all eyes on the 54 from pennsylvania. Wow. I cannot wait to see more of your discussion. Thank you for that. Thank you so much. Dont miss the show tomorrow here on cnn. Thank you, my friend. Coming up next, back talking about the loss of musical legend. Not lost on broadway v. You seen this . Cast of hall ill on the rocked out to lets go crazy last night. Well talk to a cast member and the recent visit to see that show. bear growls burke smash and grub. Seen it. Covered it. We know a thing or two because weve seen a thing or two. We are farmers. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum life feels a little lighter, potency probiotic, livelier, a little more you. Ultimate flora probiotics. Oh yeah i only wanted to see you not purple rain purple rain purple rain purple rain purple rain purple rain purple rain only want to see you in that purple rain goose bumps whoo. That was the cast of Broadway Musical the color purple. Jennifer hudson honoring the legend prince in one of the best possible ways. Princes death meeting the cast of hamilton and celebrated the big thing called princes life. That is just so awesome. Gregory haney, thank you so much for joining me, member of the hamilton cast. First, just congratulations on the show. I saw it before it hit broadway. Thank you for that gift. But i understand the news of princes passing hit you all hard in the middle of rehearsals. How did you find out . Well, we were, like you said, we were in rehearsals for a dance cleanup with andy and lin stopped rehearsal and said he had something to tell us. He didnt want us to find out via the phones or social media but tell us because were all a family there so he gave us the news and we took a second and had to continue on. But it was really hard. You could hear you could see it hit everybody individually. Im sure. The lets go crazy, you know, how did that come to be . Was that something, an impromptu thing or did you work on that through the day . Oh no. It was our musical director. And lin decided to play tribute and so as soon as they found out it they went off without a hitch. We want to celebrate him. What was the audience doing . On their feet . Definitely on their feet. Singing, dancing, celebrating. Yeah. I know that you all have many mega guests who come try to sneak a peek of hamilton. Prince was there, what, last month . He tweeted the best history class ever. Were you nervous knowing prince was in the audience . What was that like . I mean, you live being a professional actor, you know that there are going to be people in the audience you dont know and doing the show and telling the story is the foundation of it. So i think we all as actors on stage were focused on that and telling the best story we know how so and just for you, when you were, you know, younger, i understand there was singing involving a broom . Yeah. There was. Tell me about this. I can remember vividly doing chores and sweeping the porch and having an imaginary dance and singing diamonds and pearls and one of my other first memories of when doves cry. Prince was a very big influence in my life. I believe you, i believe you. You are not alone, my friend. Break a leg tonight. Thank you so much. Thank you. Over the past 24 hours, dozens of stars coming on cnn to share tributes to prince. Well share some of the most touching members and joined by a member of boys ii men saying boys ii men would never have exited without prince. Knowing him, he wants everyone to celebrate. Celebrate him and celebrate his life. Celebrate all of the things he had done for all of us because he did it for us. He wasnt bound by time or race or gender or space. So he could rock out in the Madison Square garden, the same experience. It was big and full and fearless. He recognized kindred spirits. I think musically as well as anyone ive ever known and respect and value the gift of other people. Why do we scream at each other this is what it sounds like when doves cry anybody struggling, anywhere in the world, he was sending checks, he was making phone calls and he didnt want us to say it. Im going to say it because the world needs to know it wasnt just the music. The music was one way he tried to help the world but he was helping every single day of his life. Only want to see you in the purple rain purple rain purple rain had to say i called my mother when i first heard the news and she said, i know what youre going to say. She started crying and she said, he was like my son. It reminds me of michael. And i said, i know, mother. Im feeling the same thing. To do what he did without fear was a wonderful thing. It is always great when we dont allow fear to put our dreams to sleep and he didnt. You know . He was incredible. And im just glad that i was able to say to him, i love you, the last time i saw him. All of those voices, let me bring in another one, nathan morris, a member of the grammy Award Winning Singing Group boys ii men. Nate, welcome. How are you . Im doing all right. Im sad just like everyone else. And i understand that you have said there would never have been a boys ii men if there was no prince. How do you mean . Well, without a doubt. I mean, a lot of people think about him for just song writing and, you know, playing guitars and things like that. We actually dug a little deeper and listened to a lot of his vocal structure even to the parpart s place we put them out in the bigger records. He was all we knew in high school. Musically. When you look at when you say artist and look in the dictionary, he covers it all, poetry, music, whether its expression. Hes that guy. Give me an example. I mean, im very familiar with boys ii men. What song . What specifically did he influence . One of the biggest records, one of our records we did on the second album, ii and its called thank you and the second verse theres a vocal pan and we do a lot of different oohs and took from his song seven. Its literally the same chord structure, same movement, everything. If you listen really closely, you will hear it without a doubt. At this point. Totally going home and doing that myself. You met prince. What was that like . It was funny because when we first met him, you know, we never met him before and the guys prince is a mysterious guy. We had kind of a mysterious experience where, you know, we would talk and hes going to fall out of a puff of clouds. So we met him at this event at paisley park. And he was sitting in a green room with curtains and whatnot. He said, i hope you guys are enjoying yourselves. It was him. It was funny, we turned around and, poof, he was gone. It was amazing. Total mystery. Well, thats how he lived his life. He was, again, youve got to celebrate the fact that you were ever able to listen to one of his records because its an experience in itself. Nate, whats the one song were all going home and whether its vinyl, cds, tapes that youre pulling out, its prince. Whats the song youve been listening to on repeat . Ive got quite a few between pink cashmere and diamonds and pearls, thats just the song for me right now. Nate morris, thank you so much. I am such a fan of yours. Make sure well come out to vegas and find you, boyz ii men. Thank you. Thank you. Minutes from now, we will be hearing from the sheriff. Live pictures there in minneapolis on the investigation into princes death. The News Conference they will finally be holding that. He is expected to take questions. Well bring it to you live. And here is the song that nate just mentioned. Watch them fall stand in the way of love and we will smoke them all with an intellect and one in the whole universe will ever compare i am yours now and you are mine [plumber] i need to be where the pipes are. So i use quickbooks and run my entire business from the cloud. I keep an eye on sales and expenses from anywhere. Even down here in the dark i can still see were having a great month.
