Is going to be easy because her record is so bad. Do i think its time to have some of the other republican candidates drop out, yes. There are too many people. Marco doesnt show up to the United States senate. Hes representing the people of florida, which by the way that poll just came out today. Im way up in florida. He has a very bad record of finances if you look at what happened with his houses. He certainly lives above his means. Theres no question about that. On the republican side, it is clear that senator marco rubio is trumps primary target number one today. His finances and immigration plan, his experience, and its not a coincidence. Take a look at the polling here. You can see senator rooubio polling much better. New hampshire, everyoe is about the same except for him. He tripled his support since september. And in New Hampshire, news made here as well. Hillary clinton polling quite a bit ahead of bernie sanders. So a lot of news out there politically speaking. We have a lot to chat about with dana bash. Beginning with donald trump today. He did have a lot to say, but it did seem like the focus was on marco rubio. Book, what book . Apparently he wrote a book and its going to be a big sellout. But its sort of the enemy of my enemy is my friend situation. Perhaps just for like a nanosecond if youre jeb bush today because, yes, you just played a part of when donald trump ripped into marco rubio. Its because marco rubio is doing better in president polls, especially in New Hampshire, as you just pointed out there. And because of that, hes sort of in Donald Trumps cross hairs. It was interesting to hear what he said about the man who used to go after, jeb bush. Listen to this. I think that really marco is overra overrated. Frankly had bush been a better messenger, he has a better message. If that was me, it would have been a different surface. He still does think jeb bush should drop out of the race and everybody else who is below 1 , i think he said. Hes very candid about it. He says he wants more time to talk. This press conference he gave today was vintage donald trump. A lot of talking about other people, other candidates, about the reporters in front of him, about the news organizations they were from, about how hes going to make everything great. But in his defense, he didnt get a lot of substantiative questions, but not a lot of substance in his answers either. A lot of talking, although hes been clear he doesnt want to do a threehour debate, and we have been talking about the revolt within the revolt just quickly where is all that stand as far as certain campaigns breaking ranks with others with regards to those debate demands. A handful of the candidates did not sign this letter that was supposed to be going from all of the candidates to the networks and to the Republican National committee. Why because at the end of the day they are competitors. And they all have different needs politically and other needs in way thas need to get ahead of the others. So donald trump, hes doing well. He doesnt need some of the other demands. He wants other people there. So its not a surprise, but i think at the end of the day what our viewers need to know is its probably not going to affect them and affect what they see on the debate stage, whether its our network or others. Dana bash, thank you very much. One issue that donald trump and jeb bush agree on is rooub. Marco rubio is a threat. They are coming out hard against the florida senator. Let me bring in two voices a Senior Adviser to jeb bush. Also the chairman of the Florida Republican party and he passed the torch on to matt slab, director for george w. Bush. Good to be with you and with my pal. Feeling the love. This is good. It ends there. Lets see where this goes. Al, you have known marco rubio for years. Jeb bush is your guy. When you look at the numbers today, the majority of americans say they will not vote for jeb bush. The poll was taken a day after the debate. That has to worry you. Yeah, its not been good. I bet you it wont be good for another ten days or so. We have another debate coming up in a week. If jeb performs as hes capable of, hell change that narrative. These debates only last temporarily in terms of the bump. Carly fiorina did a great job in the first debate. Tripled her numbers like marco did after the last debate in New Hampshire and now shes back to 3 or 4 points. So same with jeb. Wheres the jeb bump then . I think in a week well see it happen. Jeb has the bhes infrastructure, lasting infrastructure. The only thing missing in this whole narrative is a good debate performance and he needs to do that. He knows it. Hes capable of it. Ive seen him on the stump. If if he just performs as he does on the stump, hell do great. Jebs message is one of vision, opportunity, rising tide, its a great time for jeb bush. He needs to show his big heart. Theres someone who would disagree and that person being donald trump. Heres what he said in reference to his big night ahead on saturday night live. This evening im meeting with the staff and well start the preparation. Well pick our skits. Im not too nervous. But well do a good job and well have a fantastic show. Well have a lot of fun. My jeb impression, i dont want to do that. I dont like showing a person sleeping at a podium. Ouch al is not laughing. Matt, does he have a smidge of a point there it . I think whats happened to jeb bush in the last several days is hes unshackled himself and he has a new plan, a new strategy for his campaign. I have seen Jeb Bush Campaign in florida. This is a person with big ideas. For whatever reason, its not translati translating. If you look at the polls, if you look at peoples first and second choices, the candidates who are the strongest when you look at that, ben carson, carly fiorina, marco rubio, jeb is not just failing on the first ballot, hes failing on the second ballot. Hes going to get his energy back and hell have a chance and well see the type of jeb bush thats successful in florida. We shall see. Let me talk about these debates with you. We mentioned it with dana bash. Th the Republican Party in florida, nationally speaking, how does the rnc regain control and organize all these different candidates in. The splint eriering with the re to these debate demands . Its not easy. I was on the committee in 2012 to try to bring some to the debates and we ended up with too many and hurt our chances against the incumbent democrat. So he wanted to make it better this time to a large degree he succeeded. But the key here is these moderators. I dont care as much about your philosophy if youre a moderator. I care about the fact the only people that should be heard are the contestants, not moderator. The best moderator is the one that at the end of a Program People look at each other and say, who moderated that . Thats right. The moderators spoke more than any other candidate in the most recent debate. If you look at the number of moderators, we dont have a problem with too many candidates. We have a problem with too many moderators. Its like watching players being totally under the bus here. The candidates are creative and know how to pivot and answer whatever they really want. They throw each other under the bus. Here they are blaming the moderators. But i want to ask you about this. This is a quote from pollster peter hardy. Maybe that something has already happened and we have been too immersed in conventional wisdom to see it. The angry voters are Milling Around like a herd of cattle. A a stampede about to occur . Conventional wisdom, everyone thought no way would a donald trump or ben carson make it. Is it possible conventional wisdom is wrong . Sure, and theres no question that the Party Changes each election. If you look at the polls, what base Republican Voters are looking for is strong characteristics, somebody with the type of strength to come to washington and really take on these interests. They are locking for characteristics. Thats a brand new dynamic in this particular nominating contest. This is not a revolution like reagan. This is a reaction to what we thought this president thats abused his powers and created a gridlock, so people are angry and looking for a a candidate who will stand up to that. At the end of the day, they are going to look for a Problem Solver and a visionary. Thats what we hope jeb bush is all about. We shall see. Thank you both. So much. Ahead, we mentioned saturday night live. The big weekend for them. Should the show fire donald trump as a host . Well talk with a member of congress who is calling on the network ahead of trumps appearance this weekend. Also was it a midair blast. Satellite data shedding new light of the downing of the russian airliner. Russias news agency now reporting uncharacteristic sounds were heard on the cockpit voice recorder just before it crashed killing 224 people on board. This coming in as u. S. Officials say their satellites detected a heat flash raising new questions about a possible bomb on board this passenger plane. Joining me from cairo is ian lee and also richard quest. Ian, let me first to you. All these different claims coming in. Fact wise, what is all of this pointing to . A lot of the claims have come out and also been contradicting themselves. We have heard from the russian officials. They stuck by the line this is a mechanical issue and they have played down really the terrorist threat that this was a cause of terror, but we are hearing now we have heard from the u. S. Government that the heat flash occurred while the plane was in air np could be a couple of things. It could have been that the engine of the plane exploded somehow and caused that heat flash, or it could have been a bomb. Now the one thing to note when you look at the bomb scenario is em pass here in egypt, when we have seen isis carry out atta s attacks, we have usually seen them play videos that show the lead up to the attack and also them praising it. We havent seen those type of videos come out yet. They love to celebrate this sort of attack. So that puts a little bit of a damper on that claim. But it is still very much a possibility. Right now, though, we do not know what brought down this airplane. They are listening to those black boxes. They have experts from air bus there as well. And the egyptians have promised this would be a thorough and transparent investigation. Richard, i heard you earlier talking about how this uncharacteristic sound compared to mh17. If you listen to the voice recorder and look at mh17 report, it goes into some detail because although in 17s case, that was over ukraine. When the missile exploded next to the left side of the aircraft, there was a pressure wave and on the cockpit voice recorder theres just a millisecond before obviously the a aircraft is hit, the power is cut and the plane is destroyed. And im guessing that what youre talking about on this particular cockpit voice recorder is something similar. Its quite common. We had it with tw800. If there was an explosion, bomb or fuel or whatever it might be, the cockpit voice recorder, the microphones would have picked up that moment just before everything came to an end. What scenarios could cause that kind of heat flash scene on satellites . Obviously, the first because its at altitude, planes dont fall out of the sky for no reason, one is looking at an explosive device. Theres nothing alarmist about saying that. Its normally where you would go. It is the most obvious answer for a plane falling out of the sky. But thereafter, for that flash, for that heat flash to take place that would be seen on a satellite, youre looking at an explosion. And remember, youre talking about fuel. When mh17 fell out of the sky, the missile was registered on sat slight, but the fuel didnt explode until it hit the ground. There was no fuel fire with that plane on the way down. Now here they are going to be looking at was that heat flash an explosion. Who knows what it could be. I cant even speculate the reasons or causes that might lead to a fuel tank explosion, but thats the sort of thing that would give you the heat flash. Richard quest, thank you very much. Joining me now is cnn aviation correspondent. We all wait in the lines and Everything Else with the tsa screenin screenings. There have been similar accusations before. Whats new about this . Well, the Government Accountability office, they are an independent group and coming before congress. They are highlighting several trends that they have seen through their past investigations. And some of the highlights of the shortcomings involving this agency include tsa not evaluating the effectiveness of new screening technologies. Tsa not being consistent in evaluating Performance Measures of its secure flight programs, which gives them the ability to match passengers names against the terror watch list. And the gao also says that tsa failed to use data that they have to identify opportunities to improve their system. As you know, since september 11th, billions of dollars have been spent on Aviation Security and the gao told Congress Today the bottom line is many, not all, but many of the agencys screening methods are simply being propped up as effective without a measure of effectiveness. Take a listen. But at the end of the day for gao, it comes down to a simple question, which is does the program work and how do you know. In other words, they are saying theres no hard data to support that their systems are effective. The tsa pushing back. They say they have trained their entire front lines and say they will continue to improve their training. Okay, renee marsh, thank you very much. A young child 9 years of age just the latest victims here of violence that has plagued the streets of chicago. Police say he was shot and killed near his grandmothers home. His body found in an alley right next to it his basketball. He had been shot multiple times. Rosa flores is live in the neighborhood where he was killed. How did this happen . Reporter you know, brooke, i talked to police within the last hour trying to get the latest details on this. And police tell me that they are following two different theories o what could have happened in this alley. So let me set the scene first and walk you through these two theories. This is where the shooting happened. Im not going to zoom in to the gory details, but if you walk there are spots of blood, blobs of blood headed towards that street. So heres what Police Believe happened. One of two things. This young boy was either walking through this alley to cut through and get to his familys house, which is down this alley here to my right. Police believe one of their theories is that there was an altercation, three to four adult individuals were in this area. Shots rang out and this little boy was in the wrong place at the wrong tomb. Here is their other theory. They are not saying one or the other is more plausible, but they are saying it is plausible that the individuals lured this boy to this it alley and then shot the boy. But i got to be clear here. Police are investigating everything. So everything is on the table. There are a lot of detectives that have been here throughout the morning asking people questions to make sure that they get all the answers. I want to finish here because this is a small memorial thats been growing today. What you see there a basketball. This little boy loved basketball. Rosa, thank you so much. I want to stay on this in chicago because so many mothers know what his own mom is going through right now. A dozen of them came together. It was a private meeting yesterday with president ial candidate Hillary Clinton. She met with them for about two hours at a chicago cafe. Some mothers lost their children to gun violence in chicago. Others in shootings we have talked about here on cnn. Some involving police. Among those at this meeting, the mothers of michael brown, trayvon martin, cnn spoke with some of them right after this meeting. I felt that she was very sincere. I do feel that she listened. She made. A lot of great. Points. Now were looking for action. It was very powerful. She didnt make any promises. We have literature and language from Hillary Clinton stating what they are planning to do if shes elected for president. But we didnt get anything that was grounded. My next guest was at the meeting with Hillary Clinton. She lost her son in 2009. The senior honor student at. Edu pall was killed at a party. I want to get to this meeting with Hillary Clinton just yesterday. Tell me about franky. Franky was our hero. He had a big, great smile. He really cared and was passionate about the world around him. He really wanted to make a difference in the world and was on a path to do it. And we, like so many other americans, thought we were living normal, life within a bubble, living the american dream. E we live in a neighborhood thats considered safe. He was going to a private university at the time that this happened. And we, like so many others, thought this was not a problem that could touch our family, and yet it did. So were very much always honoring his life and his legacy, but i just miss him. I miss him a lot. I wish he was still here. I wish i would have had the opportunities to watch his life unfold as he over the weekend we had our sixth angel date. I was in his room reading some of his papers and one of the things that he wrote down is he talked about how he wanted to be a father and he wanted to have children and he wanted to have three children by the time he was 30. Obviously, all of those droeams and goals were taken away from us. Here you are linked with these other mothers now having lost your son. They have lost their own. Youre in this meeting with Hillary Clinton. You were telling me during the break she sat with you all for just about two plus hours. You have been on the forefront of trying to stop this violence in chicago. You are the founder and board president of chicago citizens for change and survivors program. What were you hoping would come out of this meeting with secretary clinton . I was really hoping to hear that we had an ally in this fight. That we were going to hear from her that she was committed to these issues, that these were issues that were going to be material to her campaign, and that she really was committed to seeing change come out of all of this loss, because just as i was listening to the piece that you were talking about before i was introduced, an 8yearold in the streets of chicago, they have become so normal that were desensitized to it. I was glad to hear her wanting to sit down and listen to our personal experiences and our ideas. How much of this is about listening versus action . We heard one of the mothers who walked out of the same meeting saying there were no grounded promises. What about action . What did you hear . Well, i can really appreciate the fact that she wasnt making false promises, because i have to tell you i have been to places both at the city level, at the state level, at the national level. I have sat in rooms where i shared my personal story over and over again and i have accompanied other parents to do the same. The truth be told, nothing has come out of any of those stories yet. So the fact that she wasnt coming in and telling us im promising toods the five following things today, i actually felt was much more genuine that the false promises made to us in the past. So what she did commit to is is being an ally. She committed to listening to us and hearing our ideas about what some potential solutions could be. Since you have been on the fore front of so much of this in chicago, if you could enact change, something very specific, whether its guns or something within the city of chicago tomorrow, what would that be . I would title guns like we title cars. I would make sure that guns actually have stronger accountability. I would really look to see changes so that gun manufacturers and gun shops can be held accountable for the guns. We have to remember that no gun is manufacturered illegally. There arent separate factories. All guns start off legal. And then they end up used in crimes. I think we need to do a better job of tracking what happens to weapons on the streets of our country. Joy, thank you so much for joining me. Im sorry about your son, but good on you for speaking up. Thank you. Thank you so much for having me. Come iing up next, voters ty in ohio head to the polls to decide whether marijuana should be legal in that state. Well talk to someone who has fought for Marijuana Legalization for years and years. He says hes made it his lifes work and says this would be a bad idea. Why . Well ask him. Barbara has a way in the kitchen. So after a visit to a a syrian refugee camp in lebanon, the author and photographer knew there was a special recipe she needed to whip up. I just have to do something. I didnt know what, but i wanted to get closer to this problem. Lebanon has been overwhelmed with more than a million syrian refugees. Many live in the valley camp and struggle to provide for their families. This whole adventure started when i went up there not know. Ing i was going to do a cook book. I started taking photographs. I have a friend of mine who called me one day u and said you want to cook soup for the refugees. Like in the americas they have soup kitchens. She collected recipes from friends to create a cook book called soup for syria. Proceeds go to the agency to helprefugees. Voters in ohio head to the polls to make a big decision about marijuana. If they vote yes, ohio would become the fifth state to allow personal marijuana use. The 23rd to allow medicinal use. Todays vote is much more controversial than the other states because cultivating marijuana would be limited to these ten preselected pot growing farms represented by big money celebrity investors. Among them were talking reality tv star nick lachey. Its driven a wedge through the coalition. Opponents say it would create a legal monopoly. Were going to get into that. One opposed to the measure, even though he favors legalizing marijuana. Also with me is paul callen. Lets talk about this. Donald, first to you. I read about you in the paper. How you have been smoking pot for 47 years and fighting to legalize it for your whole life. Yet today you voted against it. Why . I think this issue 3 was a sucker move. Do ohioans want Marijuana Reform so badly that they are willing to give up all their rights to these corporations whose owners we have no idea who they are. You talk about the celebrities fronting these organizations. We want to know who the real people that own them are. Where the real money is behind these and who is in control. This is just too much greed in this initiate. Ive for the people of ohio to accept it. We had a bad experience doing monopoly for casinos and they are not willing to repeat the problems we had with casinos trying to come up with a way to regulate marijuana. So its about corporate and greed even though you can smoke the stuff legally finally in your home state . Sure, if you want to go to the store and buy their marijuana, that would be legal under issue 3. But trying to be on the streets with your home grown or medical could be quite a problem for you. Its a little bit toward reform, but it doesnt legalize the plan. Only their production of the plant. Let me hit pause. This is not as cut and dry as legalizing marijuana. In ohio on the ballot issue 2, issue 3. Explain them. There are several things that are unusual about this ballot initiative. First of all, they are using a constitutional amendment to legalize production both medical and recreational. The standard we have seen is medical first and later on recreational. This would be a first. But then we have this odd thing that the constitutional amendment says only ten farms can produce all of the marijuana, although you can grow your own. And you have 25 investors who have put millions of dollars into those 10 farms. You have a bunch of rich people controlling production here of a limited commodity. People were so angry about this feeling it was really sort of a naked attempt for rich people to control the market that item 2 was put on the referendum, another constitutional amendment, which essentially says what 3 says is illegal. So in other words, if. You vote for 2, youre voting for a a constitutional amendment that says you cant have a structure like 3. So what happens if both are adopted by voters . Which is a possibility. Its a very real possibility because people dont read this going to check off the marijuana box. So now what happens . Ive been looking into how its been handled in other states. I have seen a couple of instances where the initiative that got the most votes is the one that prevails if they are contradictory or the other alternative is the courts could throw out both results if theres an insistent si in the amendment. Heres one of the quotes from the other side. This is a political consultant. Hes the one garnering a lot of these signatures for ballot initiativ initiatives. We have taken this from the tie dye to the suit and tie. This is the way legalization is moving in this country right now. Lets say this goes through. Its legalized. Maybe even both go through. We dont know. What happens next . Prohibition is over. The questions now are about how were going to reform this. How were going to provide this to medical patients in a reasonable, consistent way, how we can open this up for adult use without having the roof fall in. Were seeing it in colorado, washington, alaska, this could be very well done. Colorado is already getting twice the amount of taxes they do from alcohol consumption. And the governor dead set against it is now a fan of this it reform. You can do this in ohio. We just cant do it with this initiative. Political repercussions, john kasich is against issue 3. There are lots of ramifications here. Well see how it goes. Thank you so much. To be continued in ohio. Next, donald trump launching his book tour in new york city. Also at the podium, slamming his opponent ripping everyone from Hillary Clinton to marco rubio. But he did have some kindish words for jeb bush. Well be right back. It is a source of energy that produces almost no pollution and a source of the fuel is limitless. If you extract from the ocean, you have energy to run the planet for billions of years. You crack that, you have it done. Were going to have Abundant Energy to change the dynamics of poverty and fossil fuels. It will change humanity forever. Youre watching cnn, great to be with you on cnn. We begin with donald trump. He has a new book out today and lines of attack for 35 minutes he talked about everything and anything. Every country you can just pick a a name out of a hat. They are beating us in trade. I think im going to win the hispanic vote. I predict i think im going to get the nomination and i will win the white house. Beating Hillary Clinton is going to be easy because her record is so bad. Do i think its time to have the other republican candidates drop out, yes. There are too many people. Marco rubio is respecting the people of florida and doesnt show up to vote. Im way up in florida. He has a very bad record of finances. If you look at what happened with his houses, he certainly lives above his means. Theres no question about that. Marco rubio in his sights as a target. His finances, immigration plan, his experience, not a coincidence because we all know donald trump looks at the polls. Take a look at these numbers. This is how marco rubio is performing in the latest polls. Just about the same standing except for rubio. He has tripled his support there since september. Sara murray is here with me. She was at that event earlier today. Today he was on a warpath. He definitely was. Donald trump does not like to not be the number one guy in the polls. So today it was like he couldnt decide who he wanted to go after so he just went after everyone. You look at marco rubio. Very weak on illegal immigration. You look at ben. Hes very weak on immigration. He wants to get rid of medicare. Ben wants to get rid of medicare. Jeb, he lacks the quality that you need. Were talking about everybody in the world is ripping us off. You need a strong person with tremendous energy. So weak on immigration, low energy, its like hes just throwing the kitchen sink at these guys and for good reason. He looks at the people hes attacked in the past. He looks at rick perry and scott walker who are no longer in the race and says these attacks are effective. He doesnt like not being number one. Im sure he will be looking at the ratings for saturday night live after this weekend. Today hes meeting with lorne michaels. He says shes excited and not nervous. They are going to start going over their scripts. Donald trump is amazing at selfpromotion. Theres a reason hes excited. He likes being on tv and in front of the camera. The reason. We see so many republicans doing it is this is a smart way to reach out to younger voters. It will be interesting to see if he busts out a jeb bush impression. This evening im meeting with the whole staff and well start the preparation. Well pick our skits. Im not too nervous. He knows a thing or turn. Al franken. I think it will be an entertaining show. I watched the show whenever i have the chance. I thought hillary did great on it. I have known her for 20 years. Shes really shes actually a really funny person and is going to make a great president. Donald trump might take issue with that last statement there. Not everyone is amused at his upcoming appearance. Theres a growing chorus of voices protesting the show saturday. One of the loudest voices is loretta sanchez, a Senior Member of the hispanic caucus. She is joins me along with an Entertainment Writer for the daily beast. Welcome to both of you. Congresswoman, let me begin with you. What specifically are you and other members of Congress Asking of nbc . So saturday night live has had plenty of president ial candidates on before. The problem is that they are allowing donald trump the entire time. They are asking him to hes going to host this. That hasnt happened in the past by a president ial candidate. E we believe its in the flount to mexicans and mexican americans, my parents in particular because of all of the negative things that donald trump has said about us. But doesnt saturday night live have a right to book whether its one little sketch and Hillary Clinton making a cameo or donald trump for the entire show, have a right to book donald trump just as you have a right to speak up and not tune in . The same way i believe in free speech, youre correct from that standpoint except youre not allowed to go into an auditorium and yell, fire, fire, fire. In the same way its unto saturday night live to understand that when they put a donald trump in front of people and he says these derogatory comments that has a direct relationship to what is happening in everyday lives. Back in june in boston when a h hispanic male was beat up and said donald trump is right, these illegal aliens are not supposed to be here. So its very detrimental as we try to hold our Community Together and try to move along in the normal course of American Life to have an instigation of that type against us. Matt, i promise im coming to you. But let me follow up with that. I know a lot of people agree with you. I did speak with a latino woman who would disagree with you. She loves some donald trump. This was miriam witcher. Im hispanic and i vote for mr. Trump. Mr. Trump we love you hes our man sent from heaven. Hes a very, very beautiful human being. Beautiful heart. A lot of love and compassion. If you can read or hear about the job hes doing, this is something that touched my heart. I realize that is one womans opinion, but shes a big donald trump supporter. Im wondering, though, with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus making frustrated nbc having donald trump that youre actually going to have people tune in. I can imagine people at saturday night live loving this right now. I happen to like the show. I dont stay up that late. You have Better Things to do. But there have been some times when saturday night live and skits have gone overboard. But in particular, we are upset that mr. Trump is hosting this rather than just being a skit. It is enabling him after he said these derogatory comments. And Nbc Universal said were not going to stand for this. So we are simply pushing back and saying, uhuh, this is not correct and youren daujing latinos when you do this type of thing. Thats our concern. O our concern is about People Living their everyday lives and trying to be good americans. Matt, i woke up and read your piece first thing this morning. You walk through a lot. Let me ask you, first, have you heard anything from nbc . Do you have any sort of scoop as far as how they will cast donald trump in these sketches, anything . Nbc is staying awfully quiet about everything surrounding Donald Trumps appearance this week, including not reacting at all to these calls for him to be removed. To me, that indicates they are not going to budge one bit on keeping him on air as host of the show this weekend. And they are not giving away much in terms of what hes going to do, but we have about 11 years ago when he hosted the first time as a precedent to look back and he was, for most of that show, donald trump as donald trump. I dont see him venturing outside of that too much this time including that jeb bush impression which was hard to imagine hum taking on a a character besides himself. I know, well have to see. You do point out in that appearance he had a a different relationship. What did you write with not only the media, but the american people. This will be very different. He was very different figure then. Obviously, he was then just at the beginning of his time as host of the apprentice. He didnt have any serious plut call time under his belt. And he hadnt made a a lot of the comments that are now making people so angry. Matt, thank you. Congresswoman, i appreciate both of you very much. Jeb bush, by the way, will be live with wolf blitzer in a couple hours. Thats at 5 00 eastern here on cnn. Coming up, what happened . What it a midair blast . Evidence on the ground offering new clues into this mysterious midair heat flash in the downing of a russian passenger plane. We have new developments on that next. Also you have to Pay Attention to this. The massacre here that never happened. This is incredible. New questions about whether a bomb may have brought down that russian airliner, that passenger plane killing 224 people on board. U. S. Officials say a military satellite spotted a heat flash somewhere in the skies above the Sinai Peninsula over egypt suggesting a possible explosion on board the plane. This as russia makes its own mysterious findings. Joining me from russia is matthew chance. What are you hearing now from russian officials . Reporter officially, not much is being said at this point about what the investigation has found. They are keeping everything under wraps. We are not expecting any kind of announcement for the next several days at least. But there have been reports that have e e emerged on a prominent news agency, which is privately owned but is close to the kremlin. Referring to the context of the voice data recorder saying there was some uncharacteristic sounds is the phrase that was heard on the flight recorder in the moments before the plane was lost. An emergency took place instantly, which may have accounted for why the pilots flying here did not have a chance to raise the alarm or make an emergency call or anything like that. If you take that alongside the report from a u. S. Official that there was that heat flash detected as well, it would begin to see the kind of picture painted of the last few moments of the aircraft which cost the lives of 224 people. Matthew chance on that, thank you. Cnn aviation analyst is joining me. Matthew is reporting that unkorktistic sounds heard. What does that mean . It could be anything. Its hard to say. I think the good thing about it is they can attribute it to something if you have audio experts and sounds like they have a lot of people on the field helping out according to this report. Maybe they can attribute it to something whether its an explosion or something inside the airplane thats coming. Its hard to say. What it does say or at least what were getting to at this point without getting speculation is this is something catastrophic. A heat flash. I know we all move in the bomb direction, however, it could be a catastrophic engine fire that would cause that heat flash. We saw thursday an evacuation with an engine fire in florida. If this happened in the air at that rate of the fuel dripping, its possible the back end of that engine could have torched that fuel if all of a sudden a leak developed in that engine. This is something we handle every day so its hard to go that direction because its a handable emergency for us. Something we train all the time, but could have been catastrophic enough to get into the fuel tanks in. The wings and cause that issue. Its hard to say. With everyone on the ground, the investigation there and look at the debris field and thinking of the families and maybe not certainly you see the bags, but victims being identified and maybe not everyone being found. What is all of that tell you . At this it point, i was disappointed in the investigation process, but they are keeping it under wraps. It says to me that its obviously came apart in flight. One of the things that i found curious is that i have studied and we have brought this up on air the flight radar data. This is an internet site that tracks airplanes. They claim data is accurate and realtime. It has erratic things with reference to altitude and ground speed. The basic trend without getting into the details is it was headed down. You could tell when the emergency started. Whats curious to me is this is tied into transmissions. If there was an explosion or a bomb, why did it continue to transmit without electricity. Something says to me that maybe it wasnt an explosive device. Were speculating. Anything is up for grabs. We dont know. Thank you so much. Next, teens, love their social media. But we know a new study has some surprising numbers about how much time the younger folks are spending staring at the screen. Well look at that what means and get the perspective from a teen hums who started his own youtube show. Parents, if you have teens of your own or spend time around them, its no surprise how much they love doing this. Tweeting, listening to music, what have you, but how much time they spend doing it might come as a shock. Nine hours a day. Thats according to a new report. Even when it comes time to do homework, more than half of the teens say they are watching tv, using social media, 60 are text i ing, 75 are listening to music and gender divide is interesting. Teen boys overwhelmingly love playing video games while girls enjoy time on social media. So lets discuss. We went straight to the sources. A teen cohosts his own show on youtube. Just hit 100 subscriber mark. Hes also the son of one of our cnn producers here. So great to have both of you on. Great to be here. On the reporting of the facts, nine hours a day. Lets put that in perspective, thats watching tv, listening to music, playing video games, reading, scrolling on the internet. So its all of that, but its nine hours a day. And for teens, its about six and a half hours of their time on screens. So really what this report shows, Common Sense Media says its the Digital Transformation of childhood and adolescence is complete. They are now using screens and using media so much more than really maybe when we were kids. Youre nodding. I completely agree. You have to look at generation after generation. Generation one, when kids played, they were outside, throwing the baseball around, they were exploring the world. Your jgeneration, you had to cal them. Now its texting or playing video games. The world is becoming a different place to people of my generation. You dont even know what its like to have to talk to sal lus mom and get to know parent when is youre waiting for your friend to come to the phone. Its like a totally different experience with all the screens. You dont know what it was like back in our day. I know for me, i always watch tv. When doing my homework, maybe im a little bored of the topic, i have to listen to music to get. Motivated to do it. Kids in my generation have to do that. I know i play video games with friends and do that more than u get sleep sometimes. That i was saying in my piece. Thats more than teens typically sleep. Theres an issue of multitasking. So you put up the stats that were texting and listening to music or on social media. Im guilty as well. Im watching a show on netflix, im on my laptop and have my phone with me. I do it too. Im wondering why exactly is it taking me this long to get the piece done. Were just not as focused. Research shows multitasking doesnt work. So is thats a little bit of an issue with this digital age. I was researching to talk to you gois and this e email popped in covering this story of an australian instagram star up and quit social media. I told myself that i will feel valued and happiness. I dont know what is real. Shes absolutely serious. Shes telling people to get off your screens and interact with human beings. Its really resinated with her. I just dont know if this is a one off. One thing the report did find when teens were asked their favorite media activity, only 10 of teens said social media. So the sense is that they are on it, yeah, they want to be on it. They might be adducted to it, but they would prefer watching tv or listening to music. Thats kind of a good sign i think. I agree. I got instagram because i said all my friends have instagram. It grows on you after awhile. I have never done drugs, but this social media is a little addictive. It feels like i have to do it when im bored. I scroll, scroll, like, its the talk of school. As for that video, her experience is a little extreme because she had over 500,000 followers. I have less than 500. And my Youtube Channel has 100. So i can say im looking at the screen, but maybe not as much as her and trying to make it seem like im someone else. But theres a problem with kids in my generation being exposed d to the real world. Its not going to be good when they are exposed and will lead to the unemployment raise iing because we wont know what to do. Lets hope not. Good to see you in person. Look at what a fine young man he is. You have done an amazing job. Its all about balance. Thank you both so much. I appreciate it. Coming up next, cnn, looking back on a shocking case. Breaking news, and i have to sit here and tell you about another school shooting. We have been reporting on them far too much, but today this is a different tale. A School Massacre that didnt happen. Let me tell you the story of a teen in minnesota. This family all american, loving, two parents, but according to recordings and police interviews, if the youngest son in this family had his way, he would have had his he would have disposed of them. Killed them. Every one of them. Along with 40 others in a rampage that hed hoped would have outdone columbine. That did not happen. And you will learn why. And perhaps even more revealing here, an angle of the a story rarely explored. Youll hear what happened after the plot was stopped. The prosecution fell apart. And a mother and a father and a sister who cope with the knowledge that this young man wanted to kill them and continue to question what they could have done differently. Cnns wayne drash produced this story. It started out like a dream i couldnt wake up from. Got a knock on the door. We were told you need to leave your home right away. Your son has been involved in a plot to kill you, kill your husband and his sister and blow up the school basically. I was told there are bombs in our house and we need to leave immediately for our own safety. Todays date is april 29th, 2014. Im here with john. I was scare d. Mostly scared for my son. Sometime before the end of the school year my plan was to steel a recycling bin from the school and take one of the pressure cookers i made and put in the hallway and blow it up during passing period time. This is the window i seen the boy walking. He was here fiddling with the lock trying to get in. I am the one who is responsible for the co2 bomb. Even though my intentions were to never hurt anyone, i wanted to test out the devices. I have created similar to those and set them off. They want to talk about this as though this was columbine that was stopped. You have brothers and sisters . You have a sister. You would have done this stuff while she was at school as well. Before that day i was planning to dispose of my family too. I always thought my son loved me. I always believed he did. Thats a real hard pill to swallow. I just couldnt see that happening. As close as my brother and i were, that my brother would come to me one day face to face and end my life, i personally dont believe it would ever happen. Why would you dispose of your family . What have they done . They did nothing wrong. I just wanted as many victims as possible. John had a journal, a plot. Going over this plan and actually writing it out. But im glad he didnt do them and i dont think he was going to do them or wanted to do them. I assume thats why john was eager to talk to police when they showed up. What do you have at your house . I have three unexploded ones in my room. They were ready to go off with the lugt of a match. John went through a lot of changes as he was growing up. When he was young, he had a great sense of humor. My son had a set of toy knives or something he got as a Christmas Present from his dad or grandma. We have a tree in the front yard thats an old useless tree and my son made up a little target. He was just going to throw these things at the target at the tree. Didnt see it a as a problem. I saw it as target practice. I did a good job of keeping myself under the radar it seems. You were still going to do it in the next month probably . Oh, yeah. Put this plan together . Yeah, no question. Im just trying to figure out why. I think there are three reasons why. The reasons i said i did in my journal were because there were three. One, its an opportunity to get out of here. Two, for fun. And third, to follow my idol. Who is that . My number one idol is eric harris. Hes the main perpetrator of columbine high school. How did he become your main idol . I dont know. It just seems like a strange lottery. Like the unlucky lottery, the kind you dont want to win. It kind of feels like thats what my life has become. Bl my dream for him is the dream i had. I found him alive. I dont know how long its going to take for him to recover. Im thankful that nothing happened. Im thankful that, first of all, my son wasnt hurt. Im sad that it came about the way that it did. And i surely wished that we would have known something was wrong long before this. But we didnt. We have to talk about this. Coming up, ill talk to the producer of this piece, an attorney and child psychologist. Why were the charges thrown out . How can we make sure nothing more could happen. Stay with me. I found a better deal on prescriptions. We found lower copays. And a free wellness visit. New plan. Same doctor. Im happy. Its medicare open enrollment. Have you compared plans yet . Dont start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. Joint pain and damage. Can go side by side. Ask how enbrel can help relieve joint pain and help stop joint damage. Enbrel, the number one rheumatologistprescribed biologic. Welcome back. We are highlighting our indepth coverage of this School Attack that never happened, thank goodness. This was thwarted last year. In the end the teen who wanted to blow up his school and kill his family pleaded guilty to one felony count having an explosive device. This was part of a e plea deal that allowed him to avoid prison time. If he complies with the terms, the felony could be reduced to a misdemeanor and that could be wiped from his record. So those details from his colleague who joins me from atlanta. So first and foremost, wayne, kudos to you and your team for this phenomenal reporting. The fact that you were in touch with this family for months and months and they were willing to trust you and share this information and share this mans journal entries. Tell me more about the process with this family and where is this young man now . Thank you, brooke. John is currently in Waseca County jail while the state of minnesota tries to figure out how to pay for his treatment. According to the plea deal, hes to come here in georgia to a Treatment Facility to get treatment for autism spectrum disorder. The state of georgia also has to degree to accept that transfer. Thats where he is right now. But like you were saying, really thankful to the family for opening their house to me. We have met for hours over the last few months. Obviously, not very easy for them to talk about these things, to talk about your sons own words, talking about killing yourself as well as causing a massacre at school. The mother was so distraught within the first week she actually had a mental collapse to the point that she could no longer walk or eat or talk and had had to check into a psychiatric facility herself. She literally had to learn to walk again. So at the same time, they are prayerful people. I dont know if happy is the word, but they are at least pleased that nobody was harmed in johns plot, including himself as well as them. They dont believe he would have carried through with it. If anything, they believe his suicide was prevented. As part of that, they shared with me all of his journal entries since his detention. Hundreds and hundreds of pages so that i could see his change of thought in the nine months before his arrest, his journal entries were all fixate d on hi plot in the journal entry since his detention. There was no cause or fixation on violence. It was really quite ordinary stuff on one o two occasions he did reference his arrest where he says something to the effect i just was being silly and acting stoop prior to all of this. All right. Im turning to you first. You knowing heres someone we saw in police interrogation, inspired by, you know, one of those columbine, he wanted to kill 40 people, i mean, the line about i omitted one detail, i was going to dispose of my family ahead of time. You have a judge, four attempted murder charges down to a plea deal. Walk me through how the judge arrived at that decision and why. Wasnt only the judge, prosecution appealed it, it went to state courts. The thinking, whenever involved in criminality, involve in two things, not too technical, theres the act and mental state. Mens rea, mindset, and you cant only possess a mind because the mind just tells the intent youre formed to commit a crime, has to be some act in furtherance of the crime. Heres the legal issue. The legal issue is that mere preparation is never enough, so there was a ton of preparation that we see. Explosion devices exploding and a dry run. Guns in his home. Right, exploding devices. But if you dont take a substantial step towards the actual commission of the offense, its not a crime. Its so the judge said, based upon mere preparation, there was no act in furtherance, there may have been plotting and planning but no attempt to specifically carry it out. Judge said that it does not constitute a crime. That then went to the Appellate Court and the Appellate Court agreed it wasnt enough to constitute a crime. The prosecutor was in the position of, where do we go now . What they did was objected to enter into the plea deal. They entered into the plea deal because the logic is, whenever youre treateder for example, as a juvenile, hes 17, as opposed to adult, the focus is on rehabilitation. When an adult, focus is on punishment. If they went forward in terms of adult perspective he may not have gotten treatment for ailments in prison whereas a juvenile you get such treatment and thats the analysis. If the payment is made and hes sent to this facility, as wayne pointed out in georgia for ten years of therapy for autism spectrum order, how do we know after ten years if you have an intent, finish my sentence, jeff gardere. Exactly. Talking about aut tiism spectru disorder, something thats not curable. Use the autism spectrum disorder, one of issues, in addition to delusional personalty issue, he, himself, even said, i know ive got psychiatric problems. I think i may be a sociopath. This is a person who doesnt have a conscious but is smart enough to understand theres something thats wrong. I think what the prosecutors perhaps saw here was there was a chance of saving this individual because of his psychological state of mind. It wasnt that he was just a bad egg. It wasnt that it was bad wiring in his brain. He knew that his parents were very committed to his upbringing, he came from a good home and this was a person, like we have many young people who have these psychological issues and dont get the help and some of them act out. But if you could get to this guy, you know, while hes young, and you can help him and what weve seen, he didnt act out. He had the rehabilitation and so, theyll keep him in treatment. Not for the autism spectrum disorder. Maybe that was for a legal situation. Sure. But for more of the personalty disorder, to make sure that he wont act out.
