With police. Apparently being open about her role in this and why she may have been an accomplice to the killers. A source telling us richard matt the killer known as hacksaw, made her feel quote, special. Lets go to Miguel Marquez who was just talking to that state police spokeswoman, learning a little bit more miguel as far as the cabins in this wooded area there in upstate new york. Reporter look it is an all, an alleffort. Allout effort here by the state police and many agencies in this area. Cadyville is the closest place to this. Theres rumors run ripe through in area very quickly. Rumors of gunshots being heard. Police now say there is nothing to that. It has nothing to do with this investigation. This is a very, very rural part of upstate new york. They say the area they are searching, excuse me is about five square miles, about three miles from Clinton Correctional Facility where they escaped from. We were we are right here at this intersection that they have blocked off. Another four miles from there. So its a very large area that they are blocking off. The individuals they are looking through every possible place that they can. In the woods, there were a lot of lakes around here, and a lot of summer homes that may be empty at the moment. They have special teams who are going home to home. They have helicopters up. They are flying those helicopters at night using fleer or infrared so they can try to pick them up the bodies up at night. Which is always a good possibility, but i, i want to keep folks in mind that many of these searches it is often the case that the people who escape do stay very close to where they escaped from and only make plans to move on later. We saw that with dorner in california eric frein in pennsylvania. It would not be unreasonable to think that they are this close still to that correctional facility. Still, about 500 people out there looking for these individuals. And regardless of the fact that they havent found them yet, they say that they have about 600 leads that have come in so far. And that they will find them. Brooke. I keep thinking of the Christopher Dorner manhunt, there was in big bear in a cabin in that wooded area. You know mindful of that as we move forward, thank you so much. Lets broaden out this discussion to tim williams. Former chief inspector, new york and new Jersey Regional Fugitive Task force and former director for interpoll operations. And cnn sberper and forensic scientist. Tim, let me begin with you here. When youre hearing about this wooded area miguel was saying five square miles, three miles from this correctional facility presumably the getaway plan plan a, and maybe even plan b, you know out the window. What are the chances . Is there a window for these investigators in finding these two . Well i dont think theres necessarily just a window. I think theyre doing a great job coming together as a team which is what you hope happens in these kind of circumstances where agencies Work Together. They drop all the politics and they Work Together on these type of cases. Thats what the key is that the task force we ran in new york they are up there, they are supporting the local state police other federal agency. Thats the way its supposed to happen up there. Uhhuh. Larry, i know as far as forensics goes we heard, according to sources, that food wrappers have been found in the woods, maybe a footprint. What are investigators able to glean from those nuggets . Well first of all, i think thats very important because were assuming this is their bedding site based upon a dog that, you know picked up their scent. Reacted. Docks are phenomenal because a large part is devoted to old fashion work sense of smell. They can do miracles with just single molecules, but essentially, we dont know for sure if this dog acted correctly. Lets assume it did, but by looking at the candy wrappers, theres touch dna that we can do or if they ate something and left it there, saliva has a lot of cells. And you can do a dna analysis very rapidly, and confirm that it is indeed these two individuals. Now, once youve done that then the issue is where are they . And as we heard, helicopters, using infrared equipment, can spot people sometimes, but this terrain is extremely rugged in upstate. I think they need to do a search by hand people basically sidebyside walking through an area thats been basically cordoned off in these arcs. They set a perimeter and they have circles, and they go through each arc step by step by step to make sure they havent missed anything. I mean tim, were hearing these two are definitely not outdoorsmen. We know that one of them apparently was on medication for some kind of back pain. We are what six days out from the two of these criminals escaping and we also know that investigators are now searching you know, cabin by cabin by cabin, far from any kind of restaurant or food source. There are some creeks in the area. Where might they be . Well i think youre going to see a lot, things a lot different than some of the survivalist individuals that have been captured most recently. These individuals have been inside and have been in custody for many years. Theyre not outdoors men and havent been out, they are going to have to be i think you have some trained, really welltrained Law Enforcement personnel out there that have worked in that wooded area and wooded areas all over the country, and they will theyll do their best. Dogs technology forensics, like that was mentioned, there was going to be a key to help finding these individuals also. Uhhuh. Larry, how mindful are Law Enforcement in terms of not giving up too much information . I mean there is always again, were thinking of these two in the woods. I dont know how theyd have any kind of way of watching the news but still. If theyre watching the news hopefully its cnn, but if they are listening thanks larry. Then they know what were talking about and they will take a base of action. I think the real issue, the dangerous issue is they could break into a home and find a gun or a kitchen knife. And it is a dangerous thing for people to actually confront these two characters because they have very little to lose. Tim, what is worst Case Scenario . I think thats he hit it on the head worst Case Scenario is these individuals are desperate, and theyre going to get more desperate as time goes on. And thats when theyre going to have to come out and act and hopefully not do anything more violent that will, you know set a stage for them to commit more heinous crimes than theyve already committed. Thats the worry i think of all Law Enforcement, community right now is that these individuals are going to get desperate. Thats why people have to be alert. Your previous individual mentioned the community, they have to see things strange, see these individuals, they need to call the police right away and give assistance. The worry for everybody is these individuals get desperate. Theyve killed before and they will again if they had to. Well, the amw was making the point, its the little things, the little mistakes that members of the Community Need to be astute. A window thats shattered that you dont think should be shattered. Call police. His whole point was, if you see something that doesnt look right, let authorities know. Bottom line larry, i mean bottom line theyre going to get caught. I dont see them staying out that long. Theres a tremendous manhunt under way. Yeah. With, you know helicopters and small aircraft. Theyre going down, its just a matter of tonight, tomorrow or another day. But they cant survive very long out there. Larry, thank you so much. Tim williams i appreciate you as well. Thank you. Matter of time. Coming up next we keep talking about this woman who worked that the prison for seven years. Shes been questioned in connection with this escape. What she says about the killers. And also investigators who train bloodhounds will join us live to explain how these dogs right now, in the woods, are working to track down these two criminals. Stay here. Thorough search in one specific area in the woods here happening now. The two killers from upstate new york are on the run after the bloodhound picked up a possible scent, food wrappers site has been discovered as well. Outside of the search area the focus is on this woman, this is Joyce Mitchell. She worked at the prison for the past seven years. According to a source talking to cnn, familiar with the investigation, she told investigators one of the escaped prisoners made her feel quote, unquote, special. Debora and dr. Jay are here. Yes. I notice dr. Buzz welcome to you and deb, welcome back. Lets begin with this woman. What are your sources tell you about her . Shes absolutely cooperating. What we know is there are a couple of things that authorities have determined definitively. The first is she had a cell phone that was used multiple times to call People Associates friends, known to richard matt. Its unclear whether in fact shes the one who placed the calls on their behalf or whether these two men accessed her phone and made them call made the calls themselves. Second thing we know is that she has told authorities that she was the one whos supposed to be waiting there on the other side of that manhole cover when the two convicts got out of prison and drive them to safety. They could have been miles, and miles, and miles away now it appears theyre close to the prison itself. Dr. Buzz on this woman, i was talking to a former retired u. S. Marshal who was saying earlier, women, some women love outlaws. And there is that lure especially when youre working for i dont know how many years she may have had a relationship with this one man. There is a lure. There is and also women who feel they can change the mans personality and their temperament, and theyre going into prison to help. I mean these are men who need protection from their own impulses and Society Needs protection from them. Heres a woman thats volunteering and go in there and work with individuals with this sadly, unrealistic view that you can change someones personality and make them into a man that is presentable and wants to work with society, not punch holes in it. In addition to that i think its hard for many people to realize, when youre a woman alone, or a man alone, who knows, youre in there with individual attention coming at you from this person. And this person is telling you, you are my everything my god. Apparently charismatic. According to people who know him. A lot of cunning, slack, manipulation. Master manipulator. How it can get in your brain, how can i make you my slave . This is the one that chopped up his boss correct . The exact one. And one of the people that testified against him was his girlfriend. He was able to manipulate her as well. So an interestingly, in that first case he threatened his accomplice that he would kill him absolutely would kill him outright if he every stepped forward to tell. Ultimately he cracked and didnt tell. Whether Joyce Mitchell knew of that past you have to wonder whether in fact she began to question okay im the only one that knows these guys are breaking out. And if im waiting there, what are my chances. Saved her own life. Absolutely. She may have saved her own life by not showing up in the getaway car. The exact same thing. Shes smart. What about, we heard from a News Conference yesterday when the governor was speaking outside the correctional facility yes, were talking to inmates. And in terms of prison culture, you hear a lot about snitching, whats the likelihood a that anyone on the inside would have known about the plan you hear him saying you guys must have been heavy sleepers to not have heard the saw. Whats the likelihood they are going to talk . I think its very unlikely. These guys are going to come back chances are if theyre caught theyre going to come back theyre going to be really wellthought of inside the prison or theyll move them around. But inmate is fearful of what those consequences will be. Every inmate wants to get out. And theyre fearful about what can happen to them. Id be thinking, if i cooperated maybe i get out earlier. It depends on where theyre sleeping. And it depends on if they want to go into solitary confinement for the rest of the time there. Again, youre talking about survival and i can remember bringing guys to talk to me when i was in prison as a psychologist and you get very tightlipped. Whats going to happen to me ultimately . Watching my back. Also when you think about in the psychology they have very Close Council with one another. Weve seen that happen in recent terrorism cases where the two that are collaborating are brothers. They speak to no one outside their immediate circle because the moment one person hears or knows, either they want in or theyve got the power to control the information. So the fact that these two men spent so much time together and were so close, it may have been simply to protect the nature of the plot itself. So please they had it relatively easy inside that maximum security prison when they go back whether its to clinton correctional or singh singh singh or anywhere else, itll be different. Thank you, i appreciate it. Thank you. Just ahead, the search teams as weve been reporting, combing upstate new york to find these two killers prp coming up well talk to investigators who actually train these bloodhounds, explain that process, how reliable the scent is. We are getting word here that the u. S. May be sending troops to new locations as well. So lets go straight to the pentagon to our correspondent there, barbara star and where do we know will the troops be going . Well good afternoon, brooke. Right now the white house is calling it all hypothetical but the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is telling reporters they are looking at the possibility of sending additional troops repositioning troops to perhaps several locations in iraq. Pentagon officials telling us maybe three or four locations, clearly one may be on the road to mosul, iraqs second largest city in Northern Iraq key area that iraqi forces want to liberate. Why we sending more troops to iraq. We just talked about that. Basic skills like demand and control. How to spend fresh splice of ammunition to troops in the field when theyre in combat. The idea is if you put more troops out there, advisors all of this will go more smoothly. Everyone will tell you the u. S. Military needs to get their act together they need to establish welltrained troops get them some moral, weapons, supplies make sure they really believe in their government and that they believe their government is behind them. That is the key to solving this problem of lack of will to fight that we have seen in iraq. The u. S. Making its effort but still, the pentagon saying the iraqis have to step up. Barbara star thank you. Back to breaking news back to upstate new york. Massive manhunt under way here. Search for the two escaped killers on the run. Zero heartburn prilosec otc. The number 1 doctorrecommended frequent heartburn medicine for 9 straight years. One pill each morning. 24 hours. Zero heartburn. Breaking news were following that massive manhunt in upstate new york for the two prison escapees. The two killers. They received tips that may help them close in on richard matt and david sweat. You have hundreds of officers from multiple jurisdictions are assisting, assisting in the search. Also helping out the bloodhounds. And these are the dogs that may have given police the biggest lead yet. Investigators say some of the dogs have picked up on the prisoners scent. So let me bring in Sergeant John martin with marylands Washington County Sheriffs Office he works with bloodhounds, has one with him now. Also retired First Sergeant eric fogal, and john mor yarty. He led the search for the infamous texas seven fugitives some years ago. So gentlemen, great to have you on. I want to begin with the bloodhounds, Sergeant Martin to you first, youre the current k9 officer, been doing this for 17 years. Did can you explain to me in this search and i know youre not on the inside with the bloodhounds in upstate new york how do they even know scent to pick up on . Oh usually theyre given an article of clothing or something that they have touched or worn something that would carry the scent of the suspect that theyre going after. And then what . How does it continue how does this whole process work . That article is presented to the bloodhound. Theyre given the command to start their search and then they begin their search in whatever area theyre placed in. And identify whether theres actually a trail or a track where the person has been. Were looking at pictures right here of vest two and a halfyearold bloodhound. You trained them for 21 years, how effective are they . Theyre quite effective. I mean bloodhounds have been used for hundreds of years for trailing for missing people criminals. They have 200 million factory cells, it makes them a pretty unique police dog. Theyre a single disciplinary dog where we compare our patrol dogs our more utility dog, multidisciplined. These are only focussing on one thing, and thats trailing and tracking people and human scent. So staying with you on trailing and tracking how long after someone or in this case perhaps two people are in on certain locations that one of these dogs can pick up that scent . Theres a lot of factors that go into it. Anywhere but generally speaking anywhere from an hour to several days. And that all depends on a lot of the environmental conditions when you consider whether contamination, whether it be museum animal animal contamination and when the heavy, heavy rain can be factors that hamper the bloodhounds. But if you have the perfect trail, they actually can do it for, you know, ive seen them as old as three days. Wow. Generally speaking within the same day is the most effective that you would get. Ideal conditions have to persist for something to be after that. Thats pretty incredible. They are incredible. John i know you were in charge in the state of texas, you know, looking for these texas seven. And in this case we know all of seven of them stayed together after they escaped. They got caught a month later. You said the biggest difference between the texas seven and these two in upstate new york is the fact that you knew the seven were outside of the perimeter pretty quickly, and your gut tells you these two are still inside. Thats correct. Theres no the rule of thumb on it is that you set up that perimeter. And unless proven otherwise, you keep that perimeter up until you have concrete evidence that theyve got outside that perimeter. You also think chances are that they have broken into maybe one of these, these cabins these seasonal cabins in the woods here. Why do you think that . Yeah well i think that their plan according to the news reports ive been seeing from you all, sounds to me like it went awry and that they need resources. In order to stay on the run, youre going to need resources. And the old adage, no man is an island. So without resources, food shelter, clothing theyre going to be looking for some way to get those items and or transportation to get out of that area. Uhhuh. John id love to have you come back i have more for you. John thank you, Sergeant John retired First Sergeant eric and besz there, thank you all very much. Thank you. Well take you back to the breaking news on the manhunt. But i have the final bit here i want to share with you. My exclusive interview with the two current city Baltimore City Police Officers never before heard comments from active officers. They tell me how their biggest fear is now that theyre patrolling streets and it isnt getting shot. Just in we have new details on the gruesome mansion murders in washington, d. C. Pamela brown has been all over this. Pamela what have you now learned . Were learning a lot today, brooke first were learning about some of the evidence that was taken outside of the home where this quadruple homicide happened including a bloody baseball bat that investigators believe was used in the murders. Also hair follicles and fingerprints and shoe prints. Of course investigators hope this will lead them to perhaps more suspects beyond darren who we know is behind bars. He worked for the familys company more than ten years ago, also brooke were learning more about the brutal injuries that the victims sustained. Law enforcement official says that phillip, the father, was strangled, in addition to being beaten stabbed, and burned. Ive been speaking to Forensic Experts about this they say that indicates that someone, whoever did this to him was engaged, angry, because that was such an intimate way to kill someone. Also brooke as we mentioned, there was this baseball bat. We know there was apparent trauma to the rear of savass head but its unclear whether that was from the bat. Investigators want to know are there any other weapons used . We know brooke that investigators were still going through phone records and texts trying to pin down who else may have been involved in this quadruple homicide. Still such a mystery, brooke. So completely horrific and gruesome. Pamela brown, thanks. And i have been sharing several voices with you here. Voices we never really get to hear from. Two active Police Officers from baltimore. The city that just experienced its deadliest month in 42 years. Two veterans of the force offering candid views on whats happened since the arrest in the death of freddie gray since six of the fellow officers were charged with his death. They told me their take on the aftermath from how they were told to stand down as the riots erupted, which the Police Commissioner vehemently denies. Sent in without protective gear fearing for their lives to a Police Slowdown. One officer telling me nine times out of ten, officer wont stop someone suspicious on the street. They are now entirely reactive and now proactive. Theyre afraid theyll be prosecuted. These officers have not been given permission to speak from the departments because of that and in an attempt to speak candidly cnn agreed not to use their names. Not to show their faces. We have modified their voices but i wanted to share this final clip with you. This is the last clip from my exclusive interview that youre listening to here for the first time. Lets say you are one of these six charged officers would you want the trial moved outside of baltimore . Absolutely. Of course. Thats the first thing that should be. Its going to be a great injustice for these officers if they dont get a change of venue. Theres no way they can receive a fair trial. Theyve already been convicted. Its just they havent been sentenced yet. I thought you said for the most part the Community Trusts you. Well the Community Trust us the thing of it is you dont know what kind of jury poll its going to be. People might take this opportunity once they find out what case it is and make themselves available because everyone was affected by it in the city. Everyone was subject to curfew everyone has the opinion on whether or not they were affected by the street cruisers by some of the officers. And so how can you get a fair and impartial jury if everyone is affected by it . Is being an officer still worth it to you . Every day it is. Because people still need our help. Public still needs us. Were not quitting. Were not quitting on our city. Were just not. I agree. I mean you know ever since i was a child, i loved the job. Its my life. I shouldnt even say its a job because when you become a police for the right reasons, its not a job, its your life. It becomes part of you, becomes part of your family. And your biggest fear isnt getting shot these days its getting hauled off to jail. Is that accurate . Exactly. Yes. Yes. For the wrong reasons. Thats the thing. You know i have no problem if you take advantage of your position and of your authority and of your job and you abuse it you definitely deserve to be placed alongside of the criminal element. But when you do good things in good faith and you try to protect people and do what whats instilled in you, not even training wise but whats humanly instilled in you, and then you are prosecuted for that because of a, like i said a political agenda of somebody elses gain thats willing to sacrifice innocent lives, then theres something definitely wrong with them. And i can tell you this i dont know how many cops families that ive spoken with including my own family that they are saying they need to get out of Law Enforcement. You need to get out of the police department. Its, you know what do you want to do . Do you want to do you want to get visitors through a, you know a phone through a jail sell wall because of you doing your job . You know and its like i said i mean its i have hundreds of friends that are Police Officers. A lot of them are very close to me almost like family that we keep in constant touch with. That our spouses talk. And the topic of the conversation right now, that has been for the last month or two, especially between spouses is hey, im worried for him to go to work. You know theyre not talking about theyre worried because were going to end up getting shot or getting told that were in a vehicle accident at work, theyre worried about the people that are on our side seen roll over us because, you know, if something does go wrong, you have no word. Last question what would your message be to the community . Many of whom appreciate that there are excellent officers some of whom are extraordinarily skept call of you all as well. What would you want to tell the community . To tell baltimore . Were not giving up. Whatever it takes, somehow, were going to make it out of this. And just to let the citizens know, you know when you dial 911, there will be police that will show up. Its, you know theres perception right now that, you know were on a Police Slowdown or which commonly called in Law Enforcement the blue flu. Its not, you know, we took an oath. And the guys and the girls that are there for the right reasons are not going to stop. Whether were going to step up proiowa county policing 100 proactive policing 100 i cant promise that ever . No not ever. And i just at this point in time you know i wouldnt feel confident saying that hey, were going to be out there just like we were six months ago doing everything, you know its not going to happen. Its going to take time for recovery. And its going to take time for Upper Echelon to show the guys on the front lines that, you know that they have support. Whats your message . There are leaders that are talking, when i say leaders amongst Police Officers lower level commanders who are helping to keep us inspired to do the job. And we believe in them. We believe that we will get back to protecting baltimore. With time heals all wound. And we are hurting. The city is hurting. We saw our brothers and sisters injured, seriously, some of them may never recover. And we are now watching the carnage of crime riddling our city. And we want to do our job to get the bad guys off the street. We want to target that. But were going to take a page out of our own book and say, we took an oath we must do the job. But we also want the citizens to do the same. And say, im not going to tolerate this kind of behavior in my neighborhood. And im going to call the police and see that that person has a job. That person is out there trying to shoot someone, or that person was responsible for shooting someone. But if youre not being proactive, how can you expect the community to be proactive . Thats doing the humanly, the right thing to do. Thats all we ask, you know, if you see an eightyearold shot tell somebody. Tell someone. And well do what we can to go glue after parts of the interviewed air, the commissioner responded, saying in part these officers took an oath just like everyone else and that is to do their to uphold their duty. And the commissioners reaction and more go to cnn. Com. Coming up the 70s, the decade that changed television with iconic shows like charlies angels. Ooh, yes, the ever stunning jaclyn smith who played Kelly Garrett joins me now. It is so great to have you on. Welcome. Thank you. Nice to be on to talk about something that is a part of my history. My goodness i was talking to several women earlier today, and they are all sort of saying at the time when you and the other lovely ladies as part of charlies angels you were sexy you were strong. Did you have any idea when you want yesterday to that role what it would stand for . Absolutely not. I think we sort of broke the molt for cop shows, because, you know in the sense that it was three women instead of three men, and we happened to be beautifully dressed and we solved the crimes and beautiful. And i i really didnt think we would be talking about it this many years later. But i think it was a winning concept. Thats the winner thats the star of the show. The concept. Why do you think we are still talking about it this many decades later . What was the special sauce . I think it was cast very carefully. This was something and someone for everyone. It had a wide demographic. Young to old, you know men and women, young girls, adolescent boys i think it was a relief. It was fantasy, it was fun. It wasnt to be overanalyzed. I think Aaron Spelling referred to it as mind candy. I think the network, as much as they wanted to have Something Different and original they were a little frightened at the beginning, oh, this is too much fluff. But i think thats exactly what the audience love. Quickly im sure their fears went by the wayside. Can you take me behind the scenes . I know so much has written about and talked about, but there any one adeck dote between you and the other gals that no one really knows about all these years later . Oh, boy, thats a hard one. I think, you know that first threesome was pretty powerful but i do want to give my friend cheryl ladd something, who came in and filled impossible shoes. We had a strong leader kate jackson, who would get in the motor home and drive it off the lot if they didnt give us our turnaround and i guess what really made that show work and what the audience reacted to was the camaraderie of the girls. As far as behind the scenes you know i you know theres lots of those stories. Theyre hard to share without all of us being present. I got it. I want to survive, okay . No we did [ laughter ] no we got along, we were friends, were still friends, but we all you know were so totally different in many ways. I didnt answer it did i . No you didnt. Ill let you pass. In the final 60 seconds i have i recently met lynda carter and i remember spinning around as a little girl you have wonder woman, bionic woman, charlies angels. What do you make of the current roles in tv and film . 2015 . Is. Oh, wow, totally different. I think things get mired in convention and then you want something original and thats where we are today. Ours was a nursery rhyme. Today you go and you have you know masters of sex, and you have homeland. I think reality tv is in. I think that happens because people need change, and with each passing decade they have a thirst for something new and original. There you have it. Jaclyn smith thank you so much. We loved watching you. Thank you. We still watch the reruns. That does it for me the lead with jake tapper starts right now. Bloodhounds, put police hot on the trail of those two fugitive murderers. Im jake tapper. This is the lead. The National Lead the search grid for a pair of sociopaths is shrinks after authorities pick up the scent of rich art matt and david swelled six days after their jailbreak. Now details on the woman who investigators think helped orchestrate the getaway, including how one of the killers made her feel special. Police arrested him for allegedly killing a d. C
