Giving us a chance to discuss this. What was it like for you. For me it made me crazy. When i was in college and like around film school i remember i graduated from film school and i was trying to start up a freelance career as male but also as female at the same time. How do you that . You come home at lunch and change and hope that your eye make up remover works pretty good is what you do. It makes you nuts. You can only handle it so long. What bruce said about just i cant pull the curtain any more i just cant do it any more that sort of exhaustion is something i certainly felt. Were all on a different schedule. Some of us do it really young. Some of us it takes a while. I didnt have as many i didnt have a family i didnt have a spouse at the time i didnt have southeast things that might really complicate that decision and make it even more difficult. Kimberly reed i watched the documentary called prodigal son thank you so much. I appreciate it. And we continue. We begin this hour in nepal. Nearly 4,000 are dead including four americans. This massive earthquake leveling villages bringing down buildings and shifting the capital, kathmandu, shifting the city ten feet in a matter of 30 seconds. This quake rocking the tallest mountain on earth, mt. Everest, a terrifying climber capturing the terrifying moment. A wall of snow slamming into his base camp. Whoa whoa. Whoa. [ bleep ] [ bleep ] [ sound of wind ] hold on to my jacket. Hold on to my jacket. Your okay . Yeah. Are you all right . Yeah. [ heavy breathing ] many on the mountain are still missing and we month 17 climbers did not survive among them four americans. Last hour i talked to an american climber who Summited Everest already, a doctor who sfoek me from base camp about 18,000 feet at altitude and hes there helping those who are injured. It wasnt a traditional avalanche because the earthquake triggered an ice fall coming down and that ice fall collide with a land mass adjacent to the glacier and the base camp and so it wasnt like burying people it was like this air compressed blast that came across. The injuries are more something you see out of the midwest like when you have a tornado or Hurricane Force winds. Kathmandu, this little boy is found alive under a building that crumbled on top of him and a man pulled out amongst cheers of rescuers. Remote villages are unreachable including the epicenter. The number of victims is expected to soar. Nepal one of the poorest nations in the world is overflowing with the injured and hospitals, medical supplies are dwindling. Joining me from one of those hospitals is our chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Sanjay you stepped in and performed brain surgery on a young earthquake survivor. Can you tell me about that . Reporter yeah. You know first of all, these situations brooke as you well know can be chaotic pup have a tremendous demand for resources, for care and tremendous supply of patience. Y patients. There were a lot of patients that came to one of three big hospitals in kathmandu. There was a little bit of a lull after that. They thought the worst was over. Thats when the rescue missions were going further and further out from the city center and bringing people back to the city which is what we saw today. New influx of patients. At times they say we need another set of hands. Please help. Theres so many patients and they need to be cared for. They have been doing operation nonstop at this one hospital since the earthquake occurred. You get an idea of what the demand was. This lar girl is 8 years old, her name is salina. She was injured in the earthquake like so many others. She was outside of her home collecting water. She had pieces of rubble that hit her in the head and caused brain injury. They didnt know the whereabouts of her parents and very sad. Very chaotic. We now know shes doing well first of all after her operation and able to find her parents. They were with her little brother who also broke his legs during this earthquake. But thats just a glimpse of the reality, brooke for so many people right now. Dr. Sanjay gupta, theres so much more of sanjays reporting go to cnn. Com. Phenomenal work youre doing there. Thank you for taking the time. The land skach nepal is forever changed. The before, the after images show just a slice of what this massive 7. 8 earthquake did to this country. They are just another example of how difficult it is to find people in the chaos of this postquake chaos. Last hour i spoke to a man whose father is missing somewhere around mt. Everest in a park. I asked him what its like not monthing where his dad is and if hes okay. Its very trying. But also is a reason to be optimistic because we know its going to be impossible to get communications out. Were very optimistic. Maybe no news is good news piece. Yeah. News of people who have been unaccounted for is trickling in. We havent heard about my dad or dili yet. Were optimistic that dili may have decided that once things started to hunker down and wait a few days. At the same time were away that there are some dangers. We have nick valencia who in decatur, georgia. He was explaining to me that his mother and father were in nepal not too long ago and did some trekking. Reporter they were there two years ago. He was with the same guide they used on that trip they took two years ago. I took to ben whose father is an american still unaccounted for after the earthquake in nepal. They say he was expected to be out there for six to eight weeks in a trek across the country but havent heard from him since the earthquake hit. They say they are worried but remaining hopeful. Were worried, obviously. How can you not be . The biggest challenge is communication and not hearing anything. And we realized at the very start when we heard news about the quake we may not hear anything for a week or two weeks because of the nature of the country out where he is. Its hard not knowing. I wouldnt say no news is good news but this is a situation where no news is not necessarily bad news. Tell me about your father. Hes a great guy. Everybody loves him. He taught his whole career. He has many connections. People had a close connection with him through his teaching career. Hes been doing outdoor adventures like this one. We were proud he was going on this trip. Reporter to keep spirits high during this worrisome time ben said the running joke in the family right now is the father has been too busy to callback home because hes busy helping others out. An american missionary lives in india and his family said he was headed for everest and they havent heard from him in two weeks. His sister joins me from dallas. Tracy, any news . No news as of yet. You were in touch with some people who were on the ground with him. Or working with him. How are they working to get word i understand google people finder is pretty helpful . Yes, maam. I went and put a profile on there and i noticed some of his friends from the school had put it on there too and then also ive been checking his facebook and i saw that they are sending pictures to the Police Station over there to get any information but as of yet no one has any information. When is the last time you talked to him i spoke with him on monday april the 13th when he was headed out for his trek. Where was he headed . How long has he been over there . Hes been over there about 11 years now. He built a school over there where hes teaching the little kids english and then he also like teaches them biblical principles. Theres a group over here that funds over here for him to help the kids and teach them. Hes helping kids. Sounds like he loves this community to be over there for more than a decade. What is it about this part of the world in which he felt gravitated towards . He said that he went and visited it one time. And that the people captured his heart and he wanted them to know he calls god yaweh and hes translating a bible over there. He loves people and he loves helping them. He was en route to everest. Yes, maam. He goes i know he had been in 2001 and had told me he was going to go again and also i found out after the earthquake that he actually has a student from the school with him. So i would think that if anything then he would have tried to get back in hold of his school to let the parents know there that he was okay but as of now theres just no information out there. These are pictures from the funeral of freddy gray laid to rest late this morning, early this afternoon after this weekend of protest. Some of it turned quite violent. Today now were hearing from Baltimore Police saying they now are being threatened. Well have a former baltimore officer joining me live next. Plus for the first time president bush is criticizing president obama. What he said coming up. Good to see you, sir. Thanks for having me. First of all, how unprecedented is it period to have a former president criticize a president especially a sitting president. It happens. Jimmy carter used to beat up on Ronald Reagan regularly and you can give many examples of it. This was a noticeable event in las vegas. George bush avoided finger pointing or criticizing president obama, something changed at the meeting with Sheldon Adeleson in vegas and maybe two factors. One a week ago colin powell at the Kennedy Center specking at a fundraiser basically criticized george w. Bush his old boss on iraq and afghanistan policy. On saturday president obama maybe started the opening salvo of this feud calling bush a horrible worst president of his lifetime and a joke saying basically deck cheney ran the show. A few hours later in vegas the president made these comments. So its interesting you say that. You think this is all part of almost like ping ponging of criticisms back and forth at one another. Listen 2015. You have to know president bush has to know this may be a private event but these days nothing is private, right . Reporter you got it. Exactly. Nothing startling about what george w. Bush said. It was a neocon view of Foreign Policy. He took the gloves off and didnt swipe out obama one or two times, about three or four times according to the bloomberg story. Which he basically is saying al qaeda is still alive. That isil is the new al qaeda and this president is making us weak. I thought it was very strong words for george w. Bush and ill be curious to see how the white house responds to it if they do. Even if they touch it. You say gloves off. Most people say absolutely this is criticism. First in six years. Heres how Arie Fleischer fruits it. He told cnn president bush did not directly criticize president obama, Ari Fleischer said mr. Bush answered questions about how he would handle todays top Foreign Policy issues. How do you read that . Reporter i dont think thats accurate. You have george w. Bush basically saying quoting Lindsey Graham talking about what a boondoggle things are. In other words saying i agree with Lindsey Graham who said this. He was trying not to leave an ugly southern bite. This wasnt done on a talk show on tv. You know they were deleted. The real point is jeb bush. Jeb bush was in florida, did not go las vegas. So on the jeb note assuming hes going to throw his hat in the ring here do you think there would have been a conversation what would the conversation have looked like behindthescenes because im wondering if george w. Bush knew what he was going say, knew he would take this jab at president obama and how this might play out when and if jeb says im running. Well i think thats part of all this. I think george w. Bush was there to let Sheldon Adeleson know my brother is a neocon. Im a great friend of israel and im tough on the war on terror and so is my brother jeb. He was playing the surrogate for jeb bush and trying to get Jewish American voters on the side of jeb even though he wasnt there for the adeleson meeting. Douglas brinkley thank you. Coming up next after a weekend of protests in baltimore, some clearly quite violent. Police now are saying they are the ones being threatened by gangs in the city. We have that for you and reaction. Also a desperate session for any survivors in nepal after this massive earthquake. Incredible moment when this little boy was pulled out of the rubble alive. This is baltimore. This is clearly one of the armored trucks perhaps this is the city police department. Im not sure. This truck begins to move near the mall in the city some folks along the, obviously in the middle of the road. Some of these demonstrators this afternoon, all of this happening as freddy gray has been laid to rest today. We can stay on the pictures. Police this is what were hearing, police in the stiff baltimore are investigating what they consider Credible Threats against their own. Gangs are teaming up to take out police. This new Development Comes as i mentioned on the same day that hundreds attended 25yearold freddy grays funeral. Hes the young man who died one week after he was arrested stufrd spine and the question how did that happen. But i am telling you we will not rest we will not rest until we address this and see that justice is done. I have brian todd who is live in baltimore and on the phone with me Neil Franklin in charge of training Baltimore City Police Officers. Hes also a state trooper. Neil we talked last thursday. But first brian todd to you what can you tell me about these Credible Threats from the gangs in the city towards police. Reporter brooke Baltimore Police have said that at least three gangs in this area these are gangs that are normally rivals with one another, the blood, cripps and black gorilla family have teamed up to take out Police Officers the. Thats the phrase police used today. They believe this is a credible threat. They are investigating it. In the meantime police appear to be taking extra security measures at their headquarters. We witnessed police just adding to their presence of officers outside on street right around Baltimore Police headquarters downtown. Also we saw extending their perimeter a little bit outside of the western precinct the neighborhood where freddy gray was arrested and taken into custody on april 12th. That threat is ongoing. We got word as you mention ad moment ago theres a gathering of protesters down in the area by the mall near downtown baltimore, not quite sure the numbers of protesters were seeing there but police are beefing up their presence throughout the streets here in baltimore. A lot of people looking towards this coming friday brooke when a Police Report on the freddy gray incident comes out and whether possible blame will be placed on certain officers in that incident. Freddy gray dying while in custody of a severe spill in cord injury. Maybe more facts coming out on friday that might lead to the indictment of some Police Officers. Many protesters looking towards friday to see if this kind of cycle of civil unrest will continue depending on what comes out in that report. Brian todd thank you. In case youre wondering what youre looking at these are live pictures members of the media, you can see these are officers obviously in the middle of the street here where you saw that armored truck. Neil franklin let me bring you in. Youve been a member of Law Enforcement for a number of years. First you know baltimore. I was in the city on thursday talking to you about all of this and to hear these gang members want to take out Police Officers in your city how capable are they how brazen are they to follow through on that threat . First of all, brooke this is a very very potentially dangerous situation. The bgf which is one of the main gangs of the three that have been mentioned is wellknown here in baltimore. They are the grouch folks that literally took over our Baltimore City Detention Center a year or two back where the main leader the one in that Detention Center devon white just recently had his trial not too long ago, where you recall the influence they have in the city they make so much money in the city selling Illegal Drugs the power and influence they have to bribe Correctional Officers had a whole list of Correctional Officers under his control that had sex with and children by. This is just how much influence they have. Of course out in the streets they are known for committing so many crimes here across city. A very dangerous group of individuals. This should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately, were at this place where theyve made these threats on Police Officers and its very likely i mean they do have the potential to follow through with those. This is a time really when we really need everyone the citizens of baltimore, you know the Police Officers of baltimore, you know this is on both sides. Its about a few on both sides that have made this situation so bad for everyone. You know its a few Police Officers that have made this situation bad. And, i reach out now to both the citizens and the Police Officers to support each other as we move forward. Weve got a lot of work to do and to have threats like this will only push us back much further. I think the city i think the commissioner i think the Police Officers already can move forward in a different direction. I ask the union, the fop, to become part of this process of healing and moving forward and for that to happen they are going to have to get word out the their officers to start no longer tolerating officers that cause harm within our communities and the problems that were seeing. If i may, neil forgive me for interrupting. I want to jump in. What i could see is an image, i want to apologize. This happened. This is whats happening live on streets of baltimore. If you missed it thats a good thing. But this is whats happening in the city broad daylight on the day that 25yearolded frommy gray was tlid rest on the day that this family is asking please for peace, you are seeing these pictures play out. Forgive me neal for jumping in. I feel a need to apologize. If i may follow up with this. As i saw this armored truck rolling down your city streets, i immediately thought back to ferguson and by no means am i comparing the, two my question to you as someone who has worked in Law Enforcement for a number of years and there was the fear optically speaking members of Law Enforcement were out to do battle right with the citizens of any given city at what point do you say its time we have to use armored trucks armored vehicles. Well when we get to the point where citizens are destroying property and they are putting life at risk then yes. Unfortunately there is a time when we in Law Enforcement have to take those measures and it looks like we might be i was hoping we wouldnt but it looks like we might be getting to that point. Im hoping that the leaders in Baltimore City not just in city halibut our Faith Community and Community Leaders are doing their best in reaching out to the people who are causing the problems and i believe youre referring to the mall which is a very popular Shopping Center in baltimore. I grew up just blocks from there. So its a very popular place. Its a major metro transfer stop for the metro and bus. A lot of young people. Right now i think you have a lot of kids coming home from school. So yes, a very problematic time and hopefully well be able to do the right thing to calm some of these situations down. So, im just going give you a playbyplay neil and tell me if youre in front of a tv. I assume youre not. Were looking at live pictures of Baltimore Police Standing Shoulder to shoulder. Looks like with batons. Protesters on one side backing up. Some with their hands up and members of Law Enforcement are almost in this ushape in the middle of the street. Gosh. Just to know this is happening, again, on a day when this young man was laid to rest. Knowing were reporting this credible threat against Law Enforcement. Talk about this delicate rope that police have to walk in respecting ones right to protest but at the same time stopping it from going too far. Wow. It is a very delicate place. You know its very easy to do monday morning quarterbacking which we saw from saturdays event. There is no textbook response to this sort of thing. Its fluid. And you can only do the best that you can do gather as much intelligence as you khopefully you have people positioned at strategic locations to feed information to those officers who are on the scene so that they can decide you know how they are going to form which direction do they go do they need move people in a particular direction, how much force to use. You need good intelligence here from a number of different vantage points and hopefully some intelligence coming from the community of the folks who are, you know involved in whether its a protest, civil protest or whether its one thats resulting in violence. Neil stay with me. I want to continue this conversation as we stay on these images here in baltimore. I was to bring in athena jones. Athena where in baltimore are you. Were getting reports from police of bottles and bricks now being thrown at officers, broad daylight, monday afternoon. Okay. Being told we lost athena. Neil let me take you back as we stay on these images let me take you back to the point about these gangs and the point they have this power in the city and exerting this influence. What kind of conversations because listen ive covered police and crime for a number of years and you have Gang Task Force within any city police department. What kind of relationship would Police Officers have with gangs, what kind of conversations if any would be happening now to stop these gangs from being violent . Guys do we have neil . Im still here. Go ahead. Okay. So im hoping that there are Community Leaders on the area. I know there are some in the area. The question is how can we get information to them to let them know whats occurring. Hopefully there are Community Leaders in the area that can respond to this location to help out with whats occurring. Im headed that way now. Im just few blocks south there was. Hopefully i can get there and hopefully lend some assistance. Ill let you head in that direction. And listen were all watching this together and i would love to get someone on the phone. Yep. Its being worked on. Again, if youre just joining us what were covering in baltimore at 3 40 in the afternoon, a lot of different scenes. You have Police Obviously here in this parking lot, police on the right side of your screen lined up. Weve seen pockets of the city throughout the city because i just dont know. But people are protesting. We have seen some people in the middle of the streets. We have seen an armored truck. According to Baltimore Police reports of bottles and bricks being thrown at officers and were all watching this together. Media there on the ground covering this. Obviously were able to watch this because there are helicopters in the sky flying from different news stations capturing this video. And telling the story in the wake of what happened to freddy gray who was the wrong man 25 years of age who back on april 12th was taken into Police Custody at some point his spinal cord was severed, at some point he lapsed into a coma and died and one of the issues is the fact that medics werent called for 130e minutes as he was four blocks from the Baltimore City Police Station. We also know from the mayor that all of this from the police will be handed to the city Attorneys Office. How could this happen . Was he restrained . Recent reports saying he wasnt restrained in that prisoner police van. What happened as he was in the hospital . How could he have died . He hung on to life for six days. I have athena jones with me now. Athena tell me where you are and what youre seeing please. Im less than a mile from the church where the funeral was held not long ago. At around 3 00 besaw an alert from the Baltimore Police saying High School Students were planning some sort of walk out. These are some of the High School Students that walked out of the high school were at. Were right next to the high school. They have been in confrontations with the police. Some of them throwing rocks at the police. There saline of police. I dont know how many police. At least 50 have been trying create some sort of perimeter around here. They havent done a good job of that so far. You can see Police Standing there. They are mostly standing in place. Every now and then they walk towards this crowd of High School Students. Theres more than 100 High School Students out here. They have been throwing rocks. Throwing bottles. There is a Police Tactical vehicle weve seen driving back and forth. When that drives by they throw rocks. We had to duck rocks. We had several people to be careful because people are planning to throw rocks in our direction. There are three helicopters circling around. Keep your wits about you. I want to make sure youre okay to continue. Reporter we are okay for now. Were staying out of the way and staying farther from the bloirs people the targets of the rocks. Weve seen several helicopters flying low, one of which a few minutes ago called for this crowd to disperse calling it an unlawful gathering. Its a very very unstable situation around here. I talked to a bystander, an adult right when we arrived to get the lay of the land. He told me he had been warned on his Facebook Page he showed me a message on his Facebook Page that said dont go do not go to modoin after 2 30. The officer at the mall said its supposed to start here and go down. Dont go anywhere near those areas. Tell everybody. Thats the message im reading that this adult received on facebook. We dont know what will happen. Its a very unstable situation. Some of these students are holding signs. I think you can see what were seeing here. I see a line of officers and i see shields. Tell me what youre seeing. Reporter we are right next to the camera showing you that. There was a confront jays. One officer looks like a female officer stumbled and helped up. This is whats going on for the last several minutes. Theres debris thrown across the streets. Some of the things we believe these students have been throwing. Not everybody is throwing things. Theres a lot of the High School Students standing around not knowing whats going on or what to do next. What he is telling you . Reporter its a very he just said an officer just hit him. Its a very unstable situation. We heard some chants of hands up dont shoot. Not very many. But the problem, of course, if these students are throwing things at the police thats a problem, thats an assault, so were going keep an eye on the situation. Let me let you take a breath. Stay with me and well stay on your picture here. Again, we are hearing from Baltimore Police and it looks like this is different parts of the city based on the aerial shots weve been getting some of these protesters are throwing rocks, they are throwing bricks at the officers. Shes referring to this area this mall, if youre familiar with baltimore she was referencing high school seniors, dont know if it was seniors or another Group Planning a riot here. I have information the metro station, there they have shut the metro station down. Athena do, you know if they have shut anything else down in the city . Again, this is the day that 25yearold freddy gray was, a funeral was held for him. Obviously the city was prepared. They have all these officers out. They have shields. We saw an armored truck a moment ago. Now if other parts of the city are shutting down . Reporter all i do know is the university of maryland baltimore which im not familiar with where they are in the city they decided to close early, they stopped some Shuttle Service they provide students because of the notice from Baltimore Police earlier in the day about credible information they said they got about gangs that may be targeting police. Thats what police put out earlier in the day. It seems the university of maryland at baltimore decided to shut down based on an alert from police based anthony planned protest were witnessing. I dont know if you can see several more Police Cruisers showed up two jeeps. Two things. Were losing you. Were losing her signal. Well shift to this other one. Well work on getting that back up. Again were watching this together. Its unfolding here in baltimore. Two things i want to point out. One reporting from Baltimore Police. As they consider a credible threat that three different actually rival gangs in the city of baltimore but they all have the same goal and im quoting again Baltimore Police they want to take out members of Law Enforcement. Youre watching i dont know who these people are to be quite honest with you but obviously tossing rocks, Baltimore Police reporting bricks being tossed bottles being tossed at police. Again i cannot underscore this enough on the day that this young man was laid to rest. You know freddy grays family calling on quiet, calling on piece. We heard from congressman cummings in the baltimore area. Also reverend Jesse Jackson a number of leaders in community. All of them calling for the peace and clearly peace is not playing out at the moment through this city. Again, perspective, two weeks now since this young man was found and arrested on this corner in this neighborhood in baltimore. He died in Police Custody. The investigation being handed to the state Attorneys Office on friday but so many people furious over whats happened in this city. Athena jones is back with me again. Shes been in this area of the mall. Athena you were telling me High School Students National Public radio city investigating somee inginge inginge inging instigating some of this. Reporter they call it a purge, a walk out of High School Students. Did they leave school early and wasnt school over by this hour . They said yes. I dont know what ages or grades these students are from. Some seem to have dispersed but still quite a few around here not just on the street where we are but on intersections behind us and up these side streets. The police are Still Holding the line. What . They seem to have is it tear gas. We believe they have tear gas canisters that they may be ready to deploy. A very unstable situation. As i was mentioning a few minutes ago, the helicopter a Police Chopper flew very very low, ordered this crowd to disperse calling it an unlawful gathering. Thats not happened as you can see, theres still Police Officers and students in this area. But as i mention ad lot of people telling us to be quiet and seems some of these students have cleared out not wanting to be a part of this. I should mention as you no most of the morning, freddy grays family did not want to see any more violence. This is the opposite. Extreme opposite of what what they were hoping to see. It looks like something is on fire. Do you see that . I cant tell. We dont want to get too close. No. Please dont get too close. A lot of officers running towards the camera. It looks like its a plastic trash can on fire. And they are throwing rocks into the air. Almost like a popcorn popper. You know one of those stove top popcorn poppers. Thats how many rocks and larger items seem to be in the air. A Police Officer clearly hurt. We got to move back. Athena. Move back. Move back. From the last time we talked youre able to get to this location were watching neill franklin. An officer injured. Looks like a mess in the city of malt baltimore. What are you seeing . School kids that recently got out of their local schools. Were at the intersection. Around at the intersection of gwens falls at what we would call the southeast corner of the mall monroe street comes into play here. Not too far from where the church was, where this occurred. But these are school kids, and unfortunately, it would have been probably a good idea if wed have foreseen this maybe leadership at our schools, local schools, throughout the city talking about this and at least giving some giving the kids instruction, advice on what to do and what not to do how to behave themselves. How to behave themselves and this i dont honestly know what instruction could have done. I mean, sounds like these young people had it in their minds to do this. In fact, i was handed an article from the Baltimore Sun looks like according to a widely circulated flyer, a high school purge. Looks like this was, neill, anticipated. I dont know what the heads up was, a high school purge what they called it to take place this hour starting at the mall and ending downtown. So yeah and unfortunately this area here unfortunately, this area here and the mall where you have this transfer facing with metro and major bus lines in the city is the Perfect Place for Something Like this to occur. So im not surprised at the location. Neill, stay with me on the phone, please sir. And athena jones, i understand we have your shot back up. Im looking at a number of officers with batons and shields and a heck of a lot of smoke. Reporter were unclear on what just happened. We saw a trash can that was burning. We thought maybe the protestors had thrown that in the air. Now you can see this big, huge cloud of smoke across the street from us. Were seeing canisters. We dont know if theyre smoke bombs. It doesnt seem theres tear gas in the air, but yeah. You can see this is a very fluid situation. We cannot tell whats going to happen next, but you can look and see [ sirens ] this Tactical Unit moving by exactly the vehicle some of the protestors were throwing things earlier. We dont know what is injured just now. Im looking now at another officer whos down. Who looks like hes being given assistance. Bottom line brooke a very, very unstable situation, and its hard to say how their able to mentioned they asked for the area that hasnt happened yet. I also athena youre going in and out. Going in and out. So just to stand by. Neill, a question i asked you before but for people just tuning in and were watching all of these protests broad daylight monday afternoon, looking at again, i made this point to you earlier. This does in a sense, seem reminiscent of the armored trucks batons shields used in ferguson. Why, if you are Baltimore City police explain to me the need for all of this. Well obviously, you have to be able to not just protect your selves from im standing here and watching the rocks being thrown. Im watching objects being tossed at the Police Officers. So you have to be able number one, to protect yourselves and then theres a lot of other people out here who have nothing, absolutely nothing to do with this. You still have a lot of traffic here on the road. A lot of objects being thrown and the police have a duty to protect these citizens who are traveling about the city. Thats their job. And unfortunately, you do need this type of equipment. Weve already had a number of officers injured. Due to this melee out here, and now weve got the minibikes out running up and down the street, but so yeah. There is is a time and a place for the deployment and use of this equipment, and im really hoping things calm down somewhat here that were able to disburse some of these young people and get things back to normal then we can retire some of this equipment. Can you tell whats being thrown . Yeah. I mean its rocks. Its bricks. Its anything they can find laying around in the street. A couple of bottles. And some of the alleys that the kids were running down theres tons of debris. To grab, and then bring out and then hurl at the Police Officers standing here at monroe and this road. Can you explain this art part of town in baltimore . Adjacent to a mall a metro station. Where are we here . Yeah. So this is a major hub in baltimore just in the northwest part of baltimore, where you have the convergence of a number of major thoroughfares. You have monroe street. You have gwen falls parkway. You have rice town road and a couple other roads that come into this major intersection here and its again, like i said its a major hub for the metro, which is the underground transportation service, and then a number of bus lines also come into this particular location and they carry a lot of School Children during this time of the day, and and here you have it. This place is known the metrocenter here is known for a lot of unrest from time to time involving our School Children. So you know with what has occurred with freddie gray, its literally hurns s hundreds of kids ot here right now. On a normal day, this is is a potential problem, and in light of everything thats occurring over the weekend, that even heightens it more. Neill, forgive me. Back to our reporter im jumping in. Athena jones. Athena tell me what youre seeing. Youre live. Reporter weve seen that line of Police Officers stepping forward this is hold a new line that they havent been holding before. Weve also been warned there could be tear gas at any moment to help disburse this crowd. The crowd has been warned i mentioned, this is san unlawful area and they should leave the areas. No arrests weve seen. This is like i said an attempt it looks like by dozens and dozens of Police Officers to try to begin to push these protestors back. As i mentioned, some of them are holding signs. This is about the death of freddie gray but its exactly the opposite of the kind of protests that freddie grays family wanted to see or that mayor Stephanie Rollings blake wanted to see and several other elected officials, city officials, warned this type of violence will not bring justice. Sounds like a number of young People High School opportunities, who are out, who according to our reporters, our eyes on the ground are throwing bricks and rocks and bottles at members of Baltimore Police. So watch yourself in situations like these, you have to have eyes in the back of your head.
