At some point preliminary investigation shows robinson assaulted the officer forcing him to shoot the 19yearold man. Rosa flores is in madison. Do we know anymore about what happened inside the home just before the officer fired his weapon . Reporter you know, before i get into that anna. I want to show you what is happening behind me. This scene has been a very active scene since friday since these dramatic events unfolded. Take a look the Fire Department just rolling up moments ago. They wont tell us exactly what is going on. They tell us its not an emergency. The home is not on fire. I did see they pulled a hose over. Its unclear what theyre doing here. Its an active scene. You can see the crime scene tape. Police have not left this scene since this incident happened. They have been guarding it 24 7 to make sure that all the evidence inside is secured. You were asking me about the moments before this unfolded. I can tell you something, we havent seen a swarm of witnesses. We havent seen viral videos. Why . Because it happened inside that house that you see behind me. However, we did talk to one woman exclusively who is literally living a wall away from where these gunshots rang out. And she describes it as a very dramatic event. She said she threw herself to the ground. She was afraid. Of course you hear gunshots next to you. She feels that she had to speak out and tell her story because she said this needs to stop. Its in too many cities around this country. I heard the pounding on the door and was that the police . Yeah. And he forced the door open and went upstairs. I dont know what happened. I heard just scuffling. I dont know like a commotion . Yeah. Something was going on. And then when there was a running down the stairs i heard shots. And now she and other people in this community asking themselves did this Police Officer have other tools other than that weapon that the gun . And i talked to the police chief, he told me he had a stun gun but he said he couldnt comment about the use of deadly force. Rosa so you have the witness who heard the shots but we also know that the victim here the teenager who was shot and killed by the officer was inside his best friends apartment. Was there anybody else inside the apartment . Its unclear if someone else in the apartment. From talking to the woman who was next door. She said she heard a scuffle like boys being rough with each other in ses essence in this parking lot. She said they were friendly. They didnt do drugs, they werent drinking. They didnt have parties. They were guys living next door because theyre like any kids because theyre younger than she is. They would horse around and thats about it. Its unclear if the two brothers were inside the house when the gunshots went off. It appears to be they could have been inside. All right. Rosa flores. Thank you for staying on top of the developments for us. These images of protesters converging in outrage over the police shooting. However impressive the crowds are. We have seen them before. Remember after the death of Michael Brown in ferguson . Madison police chief issued an apology two days after tony rob robinson was shot to death by one of his officers. Listen. All i can do is what i think is right and that is when information is made known, theres no sense in deflecting it or redirecting it. We should own it be transparent with it and provide it. We need to start as any healing or reconciliation would with an im sorry. And ive done that privately and attempting to do it publicly. And that is the only way we can begin the healing or the riff that may take years, if at all, to amend. But the effort has to be there. So we have to acknowledge it we have to own it we have to say were sorry at the outset for it. And then we have to show affirmative steps in moving forward to Bring Community back into the fold. I want to bring in someone who helped organize todays protest emma adams. An organizer and spokesperson with the young gifted black coalition. There has been some digtsignificant differences in how this chief handled this. You heard him say hes sorry. He released the name of the officer, even revealed a Previous Police shooting that the officer had been involved with in 2007. The officer was cleared in that case. And the chief also decliechbed to say whether Tony Robinson has a criminal record. We know he does. He pleaded guilty to an Armed Robbery a few months ago. So em what do you make of the Police Chiefs response to all of this . I think the only difference that actually is going to matter here that is going make us different than ferguson new york and other places is whether or not the Police Officer is going to have to face justice. If the officer is arrested and then convicted, then we can say Madison Police is better or different than just giving niceties is not enough for someone grieving over the loss of an unarmed child. What makes you so sure that the officers actions were not justified . I think if a kid is unarmed, theres no reason to shoot him five times. In the chest. And the truth of the matter is no other people have that right. If you were i were in a struggle and there was a fight, neither you or i would have the right to shoot someone in the chest five times. We would be told that amount of force is unjustifiable. That is true. Police are people with lots of tools and resources to keep them safe. It doesnt matter. The level of violence that the what matters here is that this is part of a pattern of historical and structure racism in Police Departments and police forces. The Police Community here has been very violent toward the black community in particular overpolicing and police harassment. This is an extension of that. What we know that the violence was not warranted. Youre saying there are other issues in madison, wisconsin. Do you feel there is an underlying issue here . This is not an incident that is unique . Yeah i think that there are some things here that are unique but i think there have been other Police Involved shootings here and police have not been held accountable for the shootings. The officer that shot Tony Robinson was given an award for the killing of the person previously. So theres not a history of Holding Police accountable for Police Murders here. We saw that with this officer in the past. We saw it with the shooting of paul the officer who was not held accountable for killing paul heenan. We see that police are killing people and not being held accountable for their actions. I want to read a statement from Governor Scott walker. It reads this an overwhelming majority of Police Officers follow procedures and do a good job of protecting serving the public. Wisconsin department of justice will conduct the independent investigation. Hearing the words, do you have any confidence in the system that justice be it charges or not will hold out here . I think what is missing here is that there is no community oversight. I think that the communities need to be involved in determining justice and accountability for police. You cant leave it to people connected to the police or extensions of the police to bring out justice or bring transparency and accountability for the police. What we also know here as i mentioned, this is part of the power. We need to see a completely different structure not one of the police are connected to that can bring about accountability here. This video from saturday found the way anonymously to the School Newspaper and another Campus Organization both of which quickly publicized the inwill. The national sae organization immediately closed down the chapter saying quote, we app kbiezed for the unacceptable and racist behavior of the individuals in the video, and we are disgusted that any member would act in such a way. The University President also spoke just a couple of hours ago on campus saying this affiliation with the fraentternity is over. The members have until midnight tomorrow to move out. I dont have much sympathy for them. Theyll have to find a place, a roof over their heads themselves. We dont plan to help them. Ill tell you that. I just said ill be happy if they leave. Its not our responsibility. We dont provide Student Services for bigots. Let me bring in cnn mariguel marquez, and a member of the black Students Association at the university of oklahoma. Its a little unclear where the university wants to go with all of this. The sae has said for at least four years this charter is dissolved. There will no longer be an sae chapter at o. U. The university at the same time has shut down the house. We have pictures on social media now around the university of that house being shut down moving vans pulling up. Members taking their belongings. It will have to be out by tomorrow evening. According to david boren, the president of the university theyre going look at the incident who was involved and whether or not expulsion for some of the members might be necessary. I can tell you that the student groups africanamerican fraternities others a the school want something wider. They want to know that this is not a problem at or if it is a problem at other fraternity organizations or vorrer is er isrer is ive heard from so many students saying this is rightofwaythe tip of the iceberg. It does not appear it is the first time they have given the chant. Given the fact they were all in unitson. You are a college professor. You deal with college students. What do you make of this . It seems like a moment of pattern. A tradition and ritual within the fraternity. We dont want to think its somehow an outlier. We got an window into the interior lives and discourses of many lives. Its not an unusual circumstance around the country. Thats why its important that the University President acted the way he did. And its important to have an investigation to find out more about this. People have a right to be racist. They dont have a right to engage in discriminate story policies. It wasnt just disrespectful. Its a form of assault. This is a problem. I know you were there at the News Conference earlier today as the president came out and really condemned this act and used harsh words closing down the fraternity for good. What do you make of the schools response . I think that the president david boren dealt with the problem as best as he knew how. As far as from his political standpoint in him trying to be fair to the other students. I think he handled the best way he knew how, i also think that i think that a lot of people didnt realize it was this way. Because weve brought to his attention before i know the o. U. N. Has been a big pushing force in this. I know they have done a lot of things prior to this day. I dont i had finally grasped what was going on until this video came to the light. When you say grasped what was going on. Are you speaking about this particular fraternity . I would definitely not say that it was just this particular fraternity. President boren touched on the fact that its a Smaller Group of people representing a larger group. He doesnt feel as the larger group, the group as a whole should be in trouble for that. I think it was just a Smaller Group that got caught. I dont think its necessarily a Smaller Group of people feel this way. I think that the Smaller Group of people is who was caught on tape. Mark does it surprise you that not one person stood up and said this isnt okay . At least in the video . No. Because theres something seductive about white supremacy. Oftentimes people will be in the moment even if in their best moment they wouldnt do it themselves or initiate a chant. They do nothing to stop it. Its important to not represent but go to the fraternity and ask serious questions here. Black witness often doesnt mean anything. Black students around College Campuses around the country. They talk about the experiences. They talk about the microaggressions. They talk about the direct forms of racistmracism. They often get i thinkgnored by administration. The only time it seems to matter is when its on tape. Its important look at the tape but the bigger picture. When you heard the words in the video, how did it make you feel . Well, originally i didnt understand what the words were saying, but then when somebody wrote them out, i was thats when i was actually in awe. I was in shock. Not so much the use of profanity as far as the nword. Im not sure if you showcased the part where they said you can hang them on a tree. That hit home to me. Thats when i was really shocked. Because in the way they were chanting it it wasnt something that was just made up off the top of their head. It was something that everybody in the bus knew. That everybody chanted. That everybody clapped and was so confident and happy. I honestly think theyre upset they got caught and if they have to face the consequences for that. Last word here to you, what needs to happen to break this . One, we need to refrain this. We cant just look at this as an example of poor speech or unpopular speech. People think of this as a form of violence. We think of this as rhetorical violence against students then we respond differently. We respond with more severe punishment. You cant police their speech or thoughts but you can stop them from doing this. The president went a long way, he has more to go but he went a long way to make it happen. Thank you for joining us. Ben, before we get to general dempsey, tell us about the win by iraqi forces. Reporter yes, these are iraqi forces. We were with them today as they were launching on the attack east of te crete. It appears yet again theyve been able to drive isis out of that area. Theyve made pretty impressive progress and basically three days they were able to take a stretch of about 50 miles of road leading to the eastern side of the city and what we saw today, we saw cars smoldering that had been hit by iraqi aircraft. Isis one car, a truck that seemed to have a gun on the back was hit by an air strike. We saw three charred bodies around it. Isis has lit these oil fires around the city in an attempt to make the air strikes more difficult. But theyre going ahead as it is and when we were at the front line today, anna we did i did have an opportunity to actually speak to the iranian advisers who are on the ground. They told me in broken arabic they were here to help the army and the task to defeat isis. We heard words of praise from the commanders there on the frontlines for iran saying that these that the iraqis deeply thank iran for its help and one commander told me its better to have four iranian advisers at the front line than 400 american advisers sitting in the green zone here in baghdad. Wow, that is telling about the region and the dynamics there. I also am curious to hear more about what general dempsey plans to do. What is his goal of this visit to iraq . I think more than anything else its to perhaps remind the iraqis that the americans are indeed in the coalition itself an important part of this war. Theres been a lot of talk during the operation about the fact that there has been no Coalition Air cover of the forces going into there, and a lot of criticism but at the same time there have been hundreds i think more than 2,000 Coalition Strikes on target in iraq and syria. The United States has a large Training Program here. Theyve either already trained or in the process of training more than 5,000 iraqi troops. Of course the americans are looking beyond and theyre looking at mosul which is iraqs second largest city and theyre eager to focus iraqi officials attention on that city which of course is much larger. Its going to be a much bigger effort to try to drive isis out of that city. So i think thats probably high on the agenda of general dempsey as hes meeting here with the iraqi officials. Mosul is where weve heard isis go in and raid banks and get the money and the equipment where the soldiers put their arms down and fled. So looks like all eyes are on that city in. I just spoke with an additional source close to the Hillary Clinton camp who said that she may address it at soonest within 48 hours, all though the source refused to specify a date or time certain. What we know anna is that the clinton camp is really beginning to feel the heat from some people within their own party who came out over the weekend, like senator Diane Feinstein and dick durbin today, coming out and saying look, lets let her clear the air. Shes got to do that and that so far the attempts through a tweet or other explanations the state department or the president have not really sort of explained this issue. So my source says when the again, this is someone in the clinton camp close to those people said, look, when the explanation comes out it will be what the source says as completely innocent. Do we know how hes going to frame this . No we dont. The beginning of an explanation seems to be emerging if you put the pieces together. What seems to be emerging is an explanation that there were two kinds of email at the state department a classified email an an unclassified email. Now, the question is whether Hillary Clintons personal server has anything to do with either of those other two email accounts. My source says you know a lot of times Hillary Clinton was traveling, the blackberry would not allow her to be on a classified email chain because of course its so antiquated you cant do it over the blackberry and thats probably something government needs to work on. So their explanation is that she used the classified system whenever it was appropriate for her to do so. So stay tuned for a forthcoming explanation from Hillary Clinton and her team. The vatican reportedly investigating a demand of more than 100,000 dollars for the return of letters, handwritten by the man who sculpted the david. These letters were apparently taken nearly two decades ago. The letters went misin 1987 but the vatican never went public. The letters are priceless in part because they were penned by michelangelo himself, which is a departure of his normal practice of dictating to an assistant. Joining me now, john allen. Interesting, john. Are there any suspects right now . Apparently not, or if there are they have not been identified publicly. What we know is that this story originally broke in a roman newspaper over the weekend which reported that a former vatican employee thats all we know this is apparently a former vatican employee somehow got his or her hands on these letters. And now as you say, almost two decades after the fact is trying to get paid off. We should say that the vatican has said publicly at least, steadfastly that it has no intention of paying for the return of these letters because of course the thefts of these kinds of documents is a crime and it doesnt want crime to pay. Does anybody know why this demand isment coing two decades after the theft happened . No. I mean that is to say, you know presumably, these documents from the late 90s have been sitting around some place. Maybe they were part of somebodys rainy day fund. If anything got terribly dire they would go back to the vatican and try to get a paycheck to bring these things back. This is one of those stories that perfectly simulates the culture of the vatican. One is never air your dirty laundry in public. The vatican only now acknowledged the theft. And on the inside the system runs much more on trust than vij lens. You have to ask the question now the world can a fairly low level vatican employee make off with letters written by michelangelo himself. The answer is once youre on the inside, there is relatively little control to prevent these kinds of things. Pope francis was appointed to clean up the vatican management act. Finally, what do you know about the content of the letters . Well we dont know much except that they were apparently stolen from the library, the Office Inside the basilica of st. Peters that actually oversees day to day management of the vatican. Which would suggest these are probably letters that have to do with the design of st. Peters basilica. Michelangelo was brought in and he was the guy who conceived the magnificent dome that sits atop st. Peters basilica. Presumably these letters had to do with the design or construction.
