Members of congress, which he has been asking for for months. I have the authority to address the threat from isil. I believe we are strongest as a nation when the president and Congress Work together. Im going to begin Engaging Congress over a new authorization to use military force against isil. Tonight i call on this congress to show the world were united in this mission by passing an authorization for use of force against isil. We need that authority. Before authorizing Anything Congress wants three key questions answered. How long will this war take . The president now says three years. Geographically where will this war happen . Unsure. The battlefield will not be restricted to iraq and syria. And finally what exactly is the scope of the u. S. Involvement . No boots on the ground. Specifically no enduring offensive Ground Combat operations. Jim accosta, cnn senior White House Correspondent is with me now. Will that be enough for congress . Reporter no i dont think so brooke. It wont be enough for congress. You know you would think that the battle for this white house ahead is convincing republicans but democrats are already saying that this language is too fuzzy. That phrase during offensive combat operations that is specified in this aumf you have democrats scratching their heads asking what does this mean . When i asked the press secretary, josh earnest earlier this afternoon, what does this mean . What is this language . Is this fuzzy . Josh earnest replied very candidly this language is intentionally fuzzy. So the white house is saying is the reason why it is fuzzy is because they want to give the president the latitude to conduct this campaign against isis the way he sees fit but as you mention, there are limitations and thats what the white house is trying to convey to democrats. There are limitations. Three year sunset built into the language. That sort of ties the hands of a future president , clinton or whoever, that person would have to go back to congress and reup this authorization three years from now. Democrats are trying to say that as well. One thing to point out as you mention, brooke theres no specification in this aumf about geographic limitations and thats because the white house says the president wants to pursue isis wherever they are but its very clear in this language and authorization of the use of military force that this campaign will go on beyond president obamas time in office. Well listen in if there is specificity next hour when we hear from him. Well talk again. We know the United States has attempted to rescue 26yearold aid worker Kayla Mueller but president obama says they probably missed her by a day or two. Thats it he says. A day or two. Were also getting more details about muellers cruel death and just remarkable life. Her death confirmed in a disgusting private message sent to her family. A photograph showing what we now know was kaylas body wrapped in muslim garb and traditional burial shroud. We also hear Kayla Mueller may have been forced into relations with a male isis fighter at some point in time during her captivity in syria. This is actually coming specifically to us from the Intelligence Community who say she may have been given to this terrorist as some sort of bride. It is a sickening thought of course for the family who spoke just yesterday about their beloved kayla. Im not yet sure how to live in a World Without kayla, but i do know that were all living in a better world because of her. So im going to end on a quote that reminds me of her. Peace is not something you wish for. Its something you make. Its something you do. Its something you are. Its something you give away. My daughter said to me things that were important to kalye yyla are finally getting the attention they deserve. Kayla has touched the heart of the world. The world grieves with us. The world mourns with us. The world wants to be more like kayla and if that is her legacy and the footprint that she leaves on the world, then that is a wonderful thing. In kaylas letter she wrote, i have come to see theres good in every situation. Sometimes we just have to look for it. Right now thats what were all trying to do. After watching that News Conference yesterday, its hard to not be thinking of Kayla Mueller constantly and her strength and resilience and someone who met her is middle east editor for newsweek. Welcome. Welcome. Thank you. I know you met kayla in 2013 before she entered syria. I want to get to those moments and your reflections on her. She was made a prisoner and likely forced into relations with this isis fighter. Thats reporting that were hearing which to me begs the question if she was seen as this prized prisoner why kill her and then why show her family her young body dressed in this shroud . I dont think we know how she was killed yet. Im not sure whether she was killed in the bombing, in the air strike, or if she was killed by then. I dont think that at the moment is really the issue. I think the issue at hand is the fact that while she was incredibly well meaning and well intentioned, her death really points out how dangerous it is working inside syria for aid workers, for journalists, for any humanitarians trying to help the Syrian People. And her fate and this tragedy is really an illustration of that. I guess i hear you. My point when i heard that she was in this burial this muslim shroud it made me think you cant climb into the minds of isis, i have to think so much of this is propaganda and its staged. Absolutely. So much of the way that isis works is propaganda. This is now a propaganda war. A lot of it is we know that the horrific video of the jordanian pilot was made in a sense an astute way to use as a recruitment video and as a way of promoting themselves. Theyre masters of propaganda. Everything they do is very intentionally thought out. Her death, however, we dont yet know. I think its more important to focus on what she was doing there, the kind of person she was, and the risk to humanitarian aid workers lets focus on that. You met kayla at the syrian turkish border. What were your initial impressions of her . I thought she was incredibly young and naive and very inexperienced. I thought she was passionate and warm and well meaning and well intentioned but to be honest i left from meeting her incredibly worried. I thought this is someone thats going to get into trouble. Ive been working in war zones for more than 20 years so my int intuition about when it is right to cross into borders and when its not are very well honed. I was surprised at how naive she was and how excited she was to be going into syria. I was with another colleague and she was with her syrian friend who is also a friend of mine an activist and while its really touching to see people that are that devoted to a cause as her mother said peace and to try to bring peace to the world, i think it also has to be pointed out that war in places like syria are not the place to go when you are very inexperienced. If you dont have hostile environment training if you have never been in war zones before she had worked in palestine and india and places like that. My real impression was how naive she was about the political situation in syria, about the on the ground situation, and i just hope that this doesnt in many ways glamorize what it is to work in these places because there are an awful lot of young journalists, young humanitarians who come without proper backing, without knowing what theyre doing on the ground and its terrible. Her death has deeply deeply saddened me. Also i think it could have been prevented. So its a horrible illustration of how brutal isis are and she was a lovely warm person who had a good heart and who wanted to help the Syrian People but she really was in the wrong place at the wrong time. You would know as youve said. Youve been doing this for more than two decades. I know that kayla had moved to turkey to work with these two refugee organizations. Not officially employed by either. This is according to what family advisers told the New York Times but Doctors Without Borders was surprised to see her when she arrived in syria. Did it seem she went maybe a little off script there . Absolutely. I mean operations like Doctors Without Borders, norwegian refugee council, these are very serious organizations. Before you go to work with them before you get a contract they train you seriously with hostile environment training with insurance, with preparation. They screen you psychologically. Doctors without borders just doesnt take anyone who turns up at the border. Its a difficult thing to get a role like that. During the bosnia war there were a lot of socalled freelance people who showed up and wanted to help. Some of them did a lot of good. Some of them brought goods into the besieged cities and some of them frankly were nut jobs that were more hazardous on the ground than helpful. Now, bosnia as dangerous as it was was not like syria. Syria is anarchy. Its anarchy for people who know what theyre doing and to see someone as innocent and inexperienced as her there was terribly frightening for me and my colleague and both of us who worked inside syria since the beginning and who know it know the ground know the geopolitical situation and know the region well we both said that girl is very worrying. She went off and she went into syria and that was the last we heard of her although we knew that she had been kidnapped and we had heard rumors she had been sold to isis. Now, i dont want in any way to diminish what she was doing and that she was a wonderful person with a big heart. I do want to point out to those many people and there are many of them coming to beirut and amman and want to help and dont have clear intentions or work established already for them and how dangerous it is. This really brooke you would be surprised at how many people give up everything and just get on a flight and try to come to these places to help and in the end its just much more dangerous than they think. It is a reality check from someone who knows how hard and unglamorous war is. Middle east editor for newsweek, i appreciate you coming in and talking to me about that. Thank you so much. And for more on Kayla Mueller, lets go to her hometown prescott, arizona. You have spoken with one of her friends. What did they tell you . Reporter well brooke we spoke with a woman who lives in turkey. A friend that kayla made while she was doing her work over there with Syrian Refugees. This woman is a syrian native and she says kayla and her became very close. Kayla was like family was the same age as her daughter and she was really struck by kaylas determination to help people there in any way that she could despite the fact that she didnt have a direct connection having been born in the region like aruba was. She tells us that kayla was with her the night before she left for syria. The two had dinner together. She warned kayla of the dangers of going into syria. Kayla was determined to see the devastation firsthand and wanted to help those people who couldnt get out of syria and wanted to find a way to be able to take medicine or take them food or water or money. She tells us that kayla went into syria with three other people. Three people who are syrians including a photographer a man named omar who she believed was a boyfriend and a driver and another person and all four were captured. Listen. They were in a car. They stopped them. They wanted to know what they are going to do what are they doing in syria and in that dangerous area. Kayla sent us a audio maybe 10 15 second audio asking for help and her voice was really very sick and sad, you know . She begged for help. I called the American Embassy and called many people inside syria asking them for help if they could to convince isis to free her because shes good girl. She did very good things for the syrians but isis dont care about syrians actually. Reporter when did she send you that 15second audio you were talking about . As she was being kidnapped, do you think . After three months or two months and a half for anyone to help us. She begged for help. Please try to help me. Get me out of here. Im so sick. Im dying. Reporter you can imagine those last words and how heartbreaking that was for barakat to hear. She tried to reach back out to kayla to try to send messages but got no response. She worked behind the scenes with other militia groups inside syria and nobody had results trying to reason with isis to free kayla and she says the other three hostages who were taken with kayla were eventually released but again she says they were syrians and she believes they just had no value to isis. I am sickened to hear about the killing of three young people at my Alma Mater University of North Carolina chapel hill. One father showed up at the crime scene. We dont know his name but you can see the desperation. Tell me how my son is. Whats the situation . If hes dead tell me hes dead. If hes alive, tell me hes alive. Tell me straight up. Now we know what happened and these are three names i need you to remember. They are 23yearold deah barakat, his yiefwife21yearold Yusor Mohammad and her sister razan mohammad. Shot in the head. Senseless. They are all muslim. Police say its not clear at this point that is why they were attacked. They are investigating. The father of these two women said this. I want to quote him exactly. This was not a dispute over a parking space. This was a hate crime. This man had picked on my daughter and her husband a couple of times before and he talked with them with his gun in his belt and they were uncomfortable with him but they did not know he would go this far. Heres what we do know. Their futures were incredibly bright. Razan was a student at North Carolina state. Her sister was just going to begin dental school at unc and her husband, deah already studying denstudy ing dentistry for the summer. A mission for Syrian Refugees. Have you ever felt helpless about the situation in syria and felt like you cant do anything about it . This is your opportunity to help. This summer im embarking on a trip to turkey with ten dentists to help refugees in need of urgent dental care. Joining me now, one of the founders of united muslim relief and a friend of the victims. Thank you so much for coming on with me. Im so sorry for your loss. Thank you. Its go ahead to be here. Thank you for inviting me. You knew all three of them through your organization. I want to get to their work in just a minute. First, can you talk to me about their character. You know we live in a time of intense individualism and consumerism and these three served as shining examples to youth all over the world of the hearts that they have importance of serving others. They lived for something greater than themselves. I met deah many years ago. Him and his wife, yusor, helped launch the chapter. The younger sister razan, was a current officer in our chapter and her job was monthly feedings for the homeless and she would set up feedings where our students and young volunteers would go out every month and serve the people of raleigh and that should tell you everything you need to know about the characters of these people. These were the best of the best. These are the kind of people characters the kind of children that every parent dreams for. Its a tragic tragic loss for the community. Im so glad you pointed out the monthly homeless feedings. Ive seen pictures on the internet. Not just that deah was going to turkey this summer but this is something they did daily, weekly monthly. Can you talk to me about deahs trip to turkey this summer . Why was this so important to him . You know deah is following in his brothers footsteps. His brother served with us and served Syrian Refugees in turkey before. This is a family that has inspired many people in the community. Its not just deah. It was the brother and sister. He was getting help together to meet dental needs of Syrian Refugees and this is something that no one discusses or talks about. Its really hard to inspire people to get them involved for Something Like dental relief but something thats so important that we dont realize and he picked up something that was so tough and went after it and did great job. I really hope this Mission Continues and it will be fulfilled and well do our best to support them and make sure that this is recorded on his good deeds. I read a quote a moment ago from raleigh news and observer from the two womens father saying that he feels absolutely the three of them were attacked because of their religion and their culture. When you look at the suspects Facebook Page and im not wasting anyones time reading any of it but its antireligion. Ill leave it there. I was looking at deahs twitter feed and one of the tweets i want to share that has been retweeted many times. He wrote last month its so sad to hear people say we should kill jews or palestinians as if that will solve anything. Shaking my head. How aware was he of this sense of maybe feeling discripple fated against because of being muslim in the North Carolina area or in general. Did he ever express any fears like that to you . You know im a north carolinian too. I grew up in North Carolina. Its a beautiful state with beautiful people. Our Organization United muslim relief a nonpolitical humanitarian organization. As an american muslim we cant deny theres a sentiment in the community that we feel that we were being targeted for our faith. There is certain sections of the media on political apparatus that are constantly dehumanizing muslims. I want to take a minute and ask people like fox news and bobby jindal to stop dehumanization of muslims. Its taking a toll. Last month we had an elected official named john bennett, a state senator, said islam is a cancer that needs to be cut out of society. The Republican Party came out and made a point to say that we stand by him. These people need to reflect sincerely about what theyre doing to the social cohesion of this country. Imagine if someone had said that about the Jewish Community and the important point is black lives matter white lives matter and muslim lives matter, all lives matter. We need to put this point across to the community. I understand your frustration. It sounds like perhaps some of these young people did as well. Thank you. Youre welcome. Just ahead, the movie captivated the nation and now the real life version of American American sniper is unfolding in court. Well take you inside that courtroom. Hes suspended for six months without pay. Or will it be worse . Our next guest says do not count on Brian Williams returning to that set at all. Plus did he actually lobby to replace jay leno as a latenight talk show host . Stick around for this. Youre watching cnn. Ive always loved exploring and looking for Something Better. Thats the way i look at life. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging could i come up with Something Better. My doctor told me about eliquis. For three Important Reasons. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin theres no routine blood testing. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. Ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. Williams claimed to have been in a military helicopter when it was hit by rocket propelled grenade. Nbc today show tackled how its rattling the network. Its a difficult story for us to report on because its so personal in so many ways. Most importantly brian is not only a colleague of ours here but a very good friend. We care a lot about brian which makes it hard. We also care a lot about this place. The standards of nbc news. Thats what nbc is trying to balance here. Lets have a conversation. Welcome to both of you. Thanks for having us. All right. Youre up to bat first. I read your piece that posted last night on politico and your biggest takeaway reading the press release was hes not coming back. Why do you think that . I just dont see how you let him go for six months. Think about how long the suspension is. Its six months. It is a 5 million fine because you assume he makes 10 million a year and youre taking away six months of his pay. That clearly shows theres more going on than one incident we have in iraq. We know that the Nbc Universal chairman presented him with other misdeeds he may have done. I dont really see how over the course of the next six months you make the case for him to come back and reassume this chair when you have a guy like lester holt and other folks inside of nbc who are going to be vying for that chair. I just think the gamble that nbc will make is it will make more sense to go with one of them than to bring back Brian Williams. I made the read the word dossier and wondered if there were other examples brought up in this investigation. Jane you say hang on a second. He should be forgiven. The first time i heard of this i thought he should be given the benefit of the doubt. Now that ive heard more i mean its not up to me to forgive him i dont think. I think what nbc is doing is buying themselves some time to see if this what this investigation finds, what their internal investigation finds about katrina and other possible exaggerations and i think they are possibly going to say see how it goes. See if this in any way, the American People would welcome him back. He has a very strong newscast. This is reprehensible thing to have done. He does have a body of work. They do have a newscast very well respected. It shouldnt tarnish all of nbc news because of very clearly serious issues that have come up about him. I think i was feeling more sympathetic to him until i came up in an elevator with a young producer and i said what do you think . She said im let down. Im afraid everyone thinks this is what journalists do. I thought thats as point of view i had not thought about. I think nbc will wait and see what they find and i dont know if hell be back. I think theyll try to see what can happen. So youve been evolving and involved in a conversation with a news producer. One of the points brought up by brian stelter, our senior media correspondent, how can lets take this one helicopter story, which was not true as that evolved. How does Brian Williams when he comes back sit down and conduct tough interviews on lawmakers ahead of president ial election in 2016 . How does he do that . I think its possible. Im not saying it should happen. Im not saying that he can do it. This is in a way something that we will have to see. Again, obviously when i even said i thought he should be given the benefit of the doubt, i got mail from veterans saying how dare you say that. Its interesting to me that that the people who were there were not taking pleasure in this. They were saying they wanted to set the record straight. We asked so much in this culture of this anchors. This is not my saying he should have exaggerated but there may have been a wish to seem to be part of the guys. We dont know. Its not up to me to psycho analyze him. I think he could come back. It will be up to him and up to also finding out did anybody else at nbc know about this . How deeply does this go . We dont know those answers. Also when you think about, listen ive been doing this journalism career which i pinch myself every day for 15 years, i feel like every time i sit in the seat i want to be me. This is a fine line of being serious but also being who you are and humorous at times and it seems like when i read about how Brian Williams wanted a latenight tv gig, a surprise to a lot of people i wonder if the line was blurred. I watched cnn last night and the thought was his attraction to becoming a celebrity was bigger than just being a journalist and thats what got him and thats what contributed to his downfall. What do you make of that . I think thats right. Its also important to note that Brian Williams as the anchor of nbc nightly news is only part of his job description. What he really is the face of the nbc news brand and to some extent he was the face of nbc. So if youre the kind of guy who likes making jokes and likes telling stories and you like going on jimmy fallon or David Letterman or what have you, the more you can do this sort of build that personal brand, the better. I dont want to psycho analyze Brian Williams. I think its interesting that part of the appeal is these network newscasts need to appeal to younger viewers. Nbc has had a very solid good newscast in my opinion. Nbc news has done a lot of stories about the troops and been there and that needs to be noted. Absolutely. Tom brokaw started it and Brian Williams continued it. Doesnt mean you need to turn around and lie about what you did but the reason he was asked to be on and enjoyed talk shows, if youre on jimmy fallon youre getting a younger demographic. Thats what the shows need to do. Its a contradictory goal. Jump in quickly and then i have to go. I would say quickly, the important thing to remember is nbc nightly news is going to continue to be a strong newscast. Lester holt is a strong newsman. The question is will the American People and audience give the network the benefit of the doubt in the wake of whats happened. Stick around. Well have another conversation about another kind of anchor coming up. Meantime we just heard from police. Were just reporting the story. The three young Muslim Students shot and killed in chapel hill North Carolina we now have more information. Let me say that. New information as it pertains to a motive. Stay here. Weve been reporting on the tragic killing of these three Young Students in the chapel hill North Carolina area. It happened last night in an apartment complex and before i play the sound for you, the u. S. Attorney commenting on the investigation, just again want to say their names. 23yearold deah barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad and her sister razan mohammad. One of the biggest questions here as this man has been taken into custody and one of the questions is was this a hate crime and targeted based on their culture and their religion . Heres what the u. S. Attorney just said. I want to make sure that folks knew that based on all of the information that our office and Law Enforcement has at this time that the events of yesterday are not part of a targeted campaign against muslims in North Carolina or anything other than an individual event that occurred. We dont have any information that this is part of an organized effort against muslims and i did want to address some comments made on social media about that and to make sure that people know this appears at this point to have been an isolated incident. Isolated incident. Hes saying again involving this one man and these three young lives. We have much more including talking to a friend dear friend for many years of these three young people. Well talk to him coming up. Now to this while american sniper is making waves at the box office the realtime version of the film is playing out in a texas courtroom. The murder trial of Eddie Ray Routh got under way today accused of killing chris kyle on whom the movie is based. They were trying to help him deal with posttraumatic stress disorder. The defense maintains he was mentally ill at the time of the killings. When he took their lives, he was in the grip of a psychosis and a psychosis so severe at that point in time that he did not know what he was doing was wrong. In fact he didnt know it was not wrong. He thought in his mind at that point in time that it was either him or them. He used marijuana and drank whisky with it that morning. He admits he murdered these two men. He used drugs and alcohol that morning. And that he knew what he was doing was wrong. Ed lavandera is live in stephenville texas, in court for those Opening Statements. Tell me more about what you saw and heard inside that courtroom. Reporter some fascinating detail which haventsnt emerged since these murders took place in 2013. What did come out according to the attorney for routh is they had driven to the town to pick him up where he lived and it was about a hour and a half drive to the gun range where they would take him and spend an hour shooting guns and talking to him.
