Pilot after his plane was brought down, crashed. This is all in shocking Images Released from isis. Here he is. We see the terrified and bloodied jordanian pilot being dragged away here. Now, isis claims it shot the plane down but the u. S. Says it has absolutely no evidence of that. The question remains, what happens to this pilot and if this plane was indeed shot down, will this change the game for u. S. Led war on isis which is predominantly been fought from above. Lets go straight to the pentagon to our correspondent there, barbara starr. There are multiple questions about this story, isis is claiming, key word claims, it has these heat seeking missiles that brought this plane down. What do we know about isis capabilities . They do have access by all accounts to those shoulder fired surface to air missiles. Could they strike a warplane flying 15,000 or 20,000 feet up . Thats problematic to see that a u. S. Coalition warplane would fly within the range to put itself at risk of getting shot down. Right now u. S. Authorities say there is no evidence that the plane was shot down. Theyre not able to say yet what they do think brought it down and these are first reports but logic tells you there would be a couple things they would look at. Did some wing man, another pilot fly nearby see a missile launch. Is there any radar signature, any heat signature from a missile that may have been launched. Did the pilot who ejected give any warning that he might have been hit by a missile. So these are all the sort of very typical factors that the military would look at when a plane goes down. If it didnt get shot down, if it was socalled brought down, was it a mechanical failure. Thats also going to be a big part of what they look at especially given the fact they dont think that isis shot it down. So theres a lot on the table here and of course the Human Interest issue is the fate of this pilot. This jordanian pilot. The jordanian government already calling for isis to ensure this mans safety. Brooke . So his life obviously on the line. The question over whether this was a plane that was shot down or not, given all of the above and again as you said, these are just first reports, how might the u. S. Mission, the u. S. Coalition mission over there change . If at all . I think theres a couple of things. If they were to find that their initial reporting is wrong and the plane did get shot down, then theyll have to look at what weapons they think isis has now, what the range of those weapons may be, and how coalition and u. S. Warplanes will have to fly over syria and iraq to stay out of the range of any threat, any enemy hostile fire. If it is a mechanical problem, that too has to be looked at. The f16 has flown for years. Its a reliable plane. What is it that happened here that caused this catastrophe . Was it a Maintenance Issue . Mechanical . Some other issue that went on . Was weather a factor . All of these things. The f16 is a workhorse for the u. S. Air force and air forces around the world. In enemy action, they are going to want to absolutely figure out what brought the plane down. They dont have the wreckage obviously. So they will have to look at all of their technical data about that flight to try to figure out what happened. Barbara starr, thank you so much for your reporting on that. Also today, were watching the story out of the state of missouri home to yet another officerinvolved lethal shooting involving a white officer and africanamerican American Teenage male. This time it happened in a suburban city of berkeley and this time the suspect was armed and the city mayor saying we are different from ferguson. Heres what happened. The shooting unfolded at the gas station late last night a couple miles away from all that ferguson unrest. Police say the officer was responding to a report of shoplifting at this gas station. Encountered these two men. One of whom pulled out a gun and pointed it straight at the officer. There is some Surveillance Video from the gas station. Its tough to see whats happening. You see the officer opening fire and ultimately killing this teenager. That shooting set off angry protests. You see the scene. Smoke bombs were tossed. Bricks thrown at officers. About 200 to 300 people gathered there. There were multiple arrests. We can tell you at this moment at least two officers were injured. I spoke with the mayor here in berkeley, missouri, just last hour and he says that Surveillance Video which hes seen multiple times clearly shows the suspect as the aggressor. These two individuals left the mobil station and they were walking southbound and the policeman pulled up and they walked to the policemans car and then one walked away and turned around briskly and poi pointed a pistol at the policeman and the policeman stumbled backward and fired as he was going down. We have two black teenagers killed by two white policeman are the similarities. However, if you review the tape and video of the one that occurred last night, youll see that the victim initiated this by pointing a gun at the policeman before he fired and i reviewed that video. That was mayor hoskins. Cnn also learned the shooting officer was not wearing his assigned body camera but the mayor said the technology is new to the department and in the process of training and usage. Our correspondent George Howell is live in berkeley, missouri. So you have obviously the officers story. You have the young mans family. Have you talked to them at all . Reporter i spoke with them. Ive been speaking with them throughout the day. Spent a little time at their home this morning. Their response to this is they are being deliberate about when and how they respond. They want to know the facts. They want to see that video. They looked at it but they are continuing to make their own conclusion from it. One relative saying, look, if he was right, hes right. If he was wrong, hes wrong. They just want to know what the facts are in the case and facts as we can understand them so far, the video is very telling, brooke. Weve shown it through the day. If you look closely at it, and its up toward the top of the screen, we have blown it up so you can see it better. You see two figures, two people, with a police officer. One of the men there points what looks to be a weapon at the officer. Thats when the video freezes. Thats when the three shots are fired. The mayor making the point that this will be a very thorough investigation. He says, look, the majority of Police Officers out there are doing their jobs. Theyre out to serve and protect and many times put their lives at risk in doing so. And in this case, he says this is an officer who found himself in a position when responding to a call here at this gas station, a report of shoplifting. Found himself in a position according to the mayor where he was confronted by a person with a weapon. Since this was an officerinvolved shooting, who was doing the investigating . Reporter you know, i think its too early to even go there because we dont know i know this will be handled first and primarily by the Berkeley Police department. Theyll do their own investigation. St. Louis Police Department is also looking into this case. When Something Like this happens here which is the epicenter of a lot of the unrest obviously that we saw back in august and then the protest that weve seen from new york with eric garner and that case. Another case in milwaukee that is gaining attention. You get the sense that when these things happen and especially here, people want answers. They want to know what the facts are. At this point were just trying to sort through what were getting and to present those as quickly as possible but the video is very telling when you basically see what police are saying happened. I think its so important to underscore and the mayor did so well, all of these incidents you just mentioned are all not the same. George howell in berkeley, missouri. George, thank you. Coming up, a story that would make anyone who is traveling this week a little nervous. Smugglers wringing carryon bags full of guns and ammunition on planes sneaking around security. Same to you. You know, let me just begin with this news today of now people jumping online and watching the interview and i wonder if you are at all worried that this will affect your sales come tomorrow . Not really. Movie theaters have been forced to coexist with netflix, redbox and other ways of watching movies. We encourage you to see movies on the big screen. Thats what you can do tomorrow. Are you taking any extra security precautions based upon that threat from a week ago . You know, this is really all about seeing a movie and our theaters already have fulltime security. Weve been in touch with local authorities. Were very comfortable with the security that were going to be offering our patrons and we hope people will come out just to have a good time. Take me back in the last 24 to 48 hours, how did you get the word that change up. You can show this film . This has been one of the most interesting experiences in my 30 plus years in this business. This has changed many times. Before i walked in the studio, you Just Announced the fact that its going to be streaming simultaneously to being in theaters. That was always rumored but had not been confirmed until moments ago. We were contacted about 48 hours ago and told it was available. We always planned to show the film. Have you seen an uptick of movie goers getting that early ticket ahead of tomorrow . Have you seen any rushes . Our ticket sales have been brisk busier for this film than any other film being released tomorrow. Were optimistic. I understand thats happening all over the country. You talk about your 30 plus years doing this and you never have seen anything like this before. You had the president of the United States in his News Conference on friday talking about sony saying at the time it was a huge mistake. He since weighed in in the last couple hours and the power of the talk of free speech and the actors who were so irked. Whats been your biggest takeaway or biggest message has been . I think its very important that the public be allowed to decide what they want to see or dont want to see. You can vote with your credit card or your checkbook. If you dont want to see a movie, dont pay to go see it but dont stand in the way of other people wanting to see a movie. Weve had many other controversial films in my history including the last temptation of christ. If people dont want to see the interview, dont go to the movie theaters. If you do, line up and buy tickets. I can imagine people walking out of your theaters after seeing the film tomorrow thinking, really . This is all over this . Thank you so much. Happy holidays again to you. Happy movie going. Coming up, gun runners find a way to sneak around Airport Security bringing weapons like ak47s that are loaded on commercial airplanes until they got busted. Thats ahead. And christian pilgrims flocking to traditional celebrations of christmas. Live pictures here in the evening hour. 9 17 vatican city time. A sort of midnight mass. Well talk about the holiday and a look back at this huge year for pope francis. Stay with me. Youre watching cnn. This story is an eye opener. Imagine youre on a flight just above you in the overhead compartment is a loaded ak47 in a duffel bag. Thats one of 18 guns transported illegally from hasn atlanta to new york. Two former employees shuttled 153 guns from atlanta to new york over the last eight months. A baggage handler is accused of using his Airport Security badge to handoff guns to this smuggler, mark henry, in an airport bathroom. Harvey is charged with entering an airport area in violation of security requirements. Henry is charged with felony crimes of criminal possession of weapons and criminal sale of firearms. This is what we have from Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International airport where this began. As part of the tsa and airport approved multilayered security plan, all employees must pass extensive criminal history record checks, Security Threat assessments, and Security Training prior to being approved for access to secured areas. Additionally, employees are subjected to continuous vetting and random inspections. Well talk about employee security screening in a moment. I have with me live from new york, ken thompson, District Attorney out of brooklyn who made this whole thing public yesterday. Sir, you know, my jaw to be honest was on the floor the entire time you were talking. I totally appreciate you joining me today. Thank you for having me. Can you explain how the form former employee and current employee got this down. They broke security down by exploiting the system there. There is no screening whatsoever for employees at the airport once they show up for work. So this guy, harvey, was able to bring bags of guns into the terminal and meet his friend, mark henry, give him the guns. Henry took those guns on commercial flights, delta flights, to new york. Since may he took about 20 trips with guns. You alluded to it. An ak47, an assault weapon, an ar15, 9 millimeters while sitting with a backpack full of guns acting like he was a normal passenger. Thats what happened. They were on a plane and amazingly, some of these loaded guns never went off. They pulled this off until some months later you have an undercover detective who happens to be one of the buyers, right . How did you get wind of this . What were doing here in brooklyn, theres an issue of gun violence not only in brooklyn but throughout the country and were determined to stop the gun violence and we need to find out where these guns are coming from. We learned that someone was selling guns in brooklyn. We put an undercover in the mix. We started purchasing these guns and we followed the leads and the leads took us down to atlanta, georgia. We learned about mr. Henry and learned about this scheme. We didnt know they were transporting guns on the plane until last week. We were trying to figure out how they were getting these guns to brooklyn so quickly. It was only when we arrested mr. M henry coming out of the airport and he had guns on him and he admitted he brought those guns off of a plane. This is one of the things i was wondering as i listened to you with the guns laid out in front of you on the table. You had the guy accused of carrying on all these guns because of his mothers many years with this airline. He had this buddy or this companion pass. He could take these unlimited trips on delta. You talked about the atlanta to jfk in new york route. Im wondering, does this expand farther than that route if he could have gone anywhere . We know that hes traveled to other places like hes gone to the dominican republic. Our investigation to date reveals that he has smuggled guns on delta flights for the last five years. And so this is a very serious matter. More importantly, the lack of security down at the hartsfieldjackson airport where employees can show up and theyre not screened before they walk into the building, so they can bring bags and packages. Is that changing . Have you been in contact . Is that part of your purview . Weve worked with the fbi down in atlanta. We believe steps are being taken. We need to do it with deliberate speed because this time it involved guns. The next time it could involve a bomb on the plane. This is very serious. Its terrifying. Just huge for brooklyn that you all have been able to expose this. Ken thompson, thank you for coming in on this holiday. Lets stay in close contact with you and see how deep this could be. Appreciate it. Yes. Thank you. Its been a tremendous year for pope francis. Took on the vatican bureaucracy, helped cuba and the u. S. Reach that truly historic agreement, and on this Christmas Eve, well look at what is next for the catholic leader. And a young woman learned she only has weeks to live and her boyfriends touching reaction to that prognosis stuns this family and friends with a surprise wedding. Then they got the best wedding present possible. Something that is changing their lives. Their story coming up. Christmas eve mass is beginning at the vatican. Look at this live pictures here inside. Not exactly midnight mass. Local time is just about 9 30 p. M. Leader of the Catholic Church taking on the second christmas of his papacy. Christmas eve services in bethlehem. Fights broke out between security and a marching band in manger square. Pope francis made that historic trip to bethlehem this past year. Part of a banner year for the pope who also traveled to turkey. He helped bring longtime cold war enemies cuba and u. S. Together for a new opening. We talked about that last week. On monday, pope francis used his christmas address to bring his own house in order delivering his most critical attack yet to the vaticans governing power calling it diseased with vanitiy and rivalry. Lets talk about this here. Let me bring in father edward beck and john allen live in rome. So exciting. Looking at these beautiful live pictures, john allen, let me begin with you as we see crowds and cardinals gathering here. Tell me just what is in store for the Christmas Events this week at the vatican and what is the message that we anticipate . As you indicated tonight pope francis will celebrate the traditional Christmas Eve liturgy. The mass of christmas night. Tomorrow he will deliver his traditional blessing, blessing to the city and to the world. On sunday he will deliver the usual address thats a noontime prayer that the pope always does. And then of course next week on new years eve hell lead a service and on new years day hell celebrate a mass. In terms of the message here, these are the most solemn moments on the christian calendar and so i dont think you should expect the pope to deliver any kind of hard hitting policy address either about the internal politics of the Catholic Church or external issues of diplomacy and issues of the world. I think these are going to be very spiritual meditations but that said, i do think francis will return over and over again to the kind of core themes that we have seen emerge during the course of his papacy, which is the kind of preferential love god has for the most forgotten and the most humble among us and the need for those that hoexalt positions to use those positions in a spirit of service. I think youll hear the pope talk about that repeatedly, brooke. Those are themes that well be listening for. You said not hard hitting but, father beck, we mentioned the blistering cy ining criticism o that members are in risk of spiritual alzheimers disease. Who was he targeting there . Its interesting that were celebrating the prince of peace. The birth of the prince of peace. You mentioned those images from bethlehem. We remember when pope francis did go there in may and he stopped at that separation wall, separates bethlehem from jerusalem. He prayed that the wall may some day come down. Just today before the mass, the senior cleric in jerusalem also prayed that there be no separation wall. That we build bridges of peace instead and that peace comes from justice and this has been the message of st. Francis. Theres a banner thats hanging at that church of the nativity today, this evening in bethlehem, that says all i want for christmas is justice. And so were reminded once again of the conflicts throughout the world and this pope has continued to remind us of that. So when he spoke his christmas message at the vatican, he was saying that these are issues that bureaucracy must be engaged and concerned about. He said it cant be about your pathology of power. Theres the most powerful man in the church saying theres a pathology of power in the church. A terrorism of gossip. An arrogance. He says, no. Issues of justice and peace. This is what you must concern yourself with. So you mention the wall there in bethlehem and talk about International Issues and domestically, john allen, looking back at the year he broke new ground with a stronger role for women in the church and the letter that helped begin this thaw between u. S. And cuba and Flash Forward to the next year, john allen. What do you think he will tackle, discuss, lift the veil . Well, first of all, i think this pope ought to come with a warning label. Caution, predictions are hazardous to your health. This is a pope of surprise. We never really know what hes going to do. If we look at whats already on the books for 2015, first of all, in january, hes taking a trip to sri lanka in the philippines. Another outreach to asia and the developing world. We know that sometime early in 2015, hes going to release a teaching on the environment. The first time a pope has ever devoted such a teaching document to Climate Change and ecology. We know in september hes going to make his in the flesh view in the United States. Hes going to visit philadelphia for a vatican meeting of families and hes probably also going to go to new york to address the u. N. And washington to address the joint session of congress. We know that in october, hes convening another summit. Wh catholic bishops from all over the world to talk about hot button issues having to do with the family and what role homosexuals out to have in the church and whether divorced or remarried catholics ought to be able to receive commune oniocom. Just looking at what is on the schedule, we can say for sure this is going to be another extraordinarily eventful year for pope francis in 2015. I couldnt help but think of his role in thaw with u. S. And cuba and you mentioned him visiting washington. Thats where i am today. The thought of him going to talk to congress. I guess perhaps he could help there as well. Father beck, my final question to you. My final question to you. When i was just so stunned by how the pope was so integral in helping broker those relations between castro and obama. In your lifetime, thinking of the popes past, has the pope had that kind of power and that kind of sway . Certainly if you think back to the fall of communism. It is not without precedence that the pope has been involved in these political processes. The point is that its not about politics for the pape yasapapac. It is about issues of peace and justice. The pope gets involved when people are suffering. When theres a call for liberation. When theres a call for justice. And of course cuba has been that issue when they intervened in syria thats the issue. In the middle east thats the issue. All i can say if that was the christmas message that he gave that we heard, i cant wait to hear good friday. Father edward beck and john allen, Merry Christmas to both of you. Thank you very much for joining me. An incredible year for health stories. 2014 was the first year we saw ebola in the United States and africa continues to fight this epidemic. And holding onto hope, a young woman is given weeks to live but after a wedding to the love of her life, something has changed. Stay with me. I cant wait to share this story with you. A little while ago this 25yearold young woman was given a prognosis of only a few weeks left to live. This rare form of cancer returned after three years of remission. She gathered a hundred or so loved ones around the country to perhaps say goodbye and i love you. She and her boyfriend came up with an alternative. A wedding instead. So now just a day after the ceremony, doctors are seeing new gains in her treatment. And liza is no longer at home care. Liza and her new hubs are joining me now in front of their gorgeous Christmas Tree in shreveport, louisiana. Welcome to both of you. Congratulations. Thank you so much. Thank you. Ill ask and get the full skinny on how you pulled off this surprise wedding. Liza, first to you, how are you doing healthwise today . Im doing so much better than i was two weeks ago when we were in baltimore. I started taking a chemo pill and i think were on the eighth day now so i can definitely start to feel the side effects. I hope that means its working. Im feeling pretty great really. As well as you could feel when youre doing chemo. Her attitude is great. Phenomenal. Phenomenal. I see it through the smile and the love between the two of you. Lets get this conversation started. So you have people in town from all over the country in shreveport, who got the idea of the wedding going. We had people in town and it was important to us and it couldnt have been a better ceremony. Hardly a dry eye there. We had the night of our lives. I thought, you know, we only have a few weeks and as a girl i never thought we could plan a wedding that fast. He convinced me to turn it into a surprise wedding. He convinced you. How did you pull off getting, i dont know, decorations and most importantly that dress. Of course the dress was so beautiful. Actually, a girl that grew up down the street from me, she was a few years older. She had been married a few years ago. I saw her wear that dress. I always wanted to wear it. I thought when i would get married, i will call her and find out who made it and where i could get it and i joked with my friends about what if i asked her to borrow it . Shes the same size as me. When we decided to plan a wedding in two days, i thought it was the perfect opportunity to ask her. I called her up and she said yes. She was so gracious. She said i could alter it or do whatever i wanted to it but really it ended up fitting perfectly. We didnt have to do anything. That just was really lucky. Incredible. So as youre surrounded by love and i had read that your dad said you were having the time of your life, what were, a, how were you able to pull it off hours of being with loved ones and dancing and what was the reaction from all of your guests . I would say everyone was really happy. Theres definitely tears, no dry eyes. Just so much excitement. So much love. At that time we still thought i was only going to be going to hospice afterward. A sense that this was our last goodbye but its a wedding so its about love and fun and i love to dance. He definitely loves to dance. So it was a good time. There was a lot of crying. We had a lot of insiders helping us plan the wedding take care of just the bare essentials. If you have seen the pictures, you can tell that someone was really taking care of us because the sunset over the lake was beautiful. I think that the general mood was just overrun with emotion. I saw people i had gone to college with, tough guys their whole lives who are crying the whole night just overjoyed and it was just so special to share it with that many people. And really, i mean, you think with 48 hours you wouldnt be able to get most things you wanted but the wedding turned out perfectly. It was my dream wedding. Everything i would have wanted to have in a wedding if i took a year to plan it. It was great. I guess as i sit and talk to you and im mindful of family and this time of year here we are on Christmas Eve, just what is the message . Talk about loving one another and spending time with your families, what message do you want to tell people as you sit there in front of your Christmas Tree . I mean, i guess i realized once i thought i only had a few weeks left to live how important it is to spend as much time with your family and friends as possible and tell them that you love them and tell them that they are great or everything you would want to say. I think a lot of times things go unspoken. When people realize i may only have a few weeks left, i know i just got an outpouring of cards and calls and texts and emails and just Little Things saying i love you. Ive always felt this about you or that about you and you helped me in this situation and just things that you would want people to know but you never really take the time to say because you dont feel like youre going to run out of time. I guess just spend as much time and say what you really feel to your friends and family. I think affliction can make people feel isolated and sense of community and love and support that weve had from everyone that we know, i dont think that weve ever felt more loved and we appreciate that. My goodness you two. No words. Just love from here in washington, d. C. Down to you in shreveport, louisiana, and gratitude. I couldnt have said it better myself. Thank you, liza and wyatt. Best to you. Lizas cancer is rare so money for research is scarce. We were so taken aback by them. If you would like to donate, give online, phone or mail at johns hopkins.
