Well, for one, were trying to figure out why was he playing the part of a judge, a prosecutor and an executor that day, that moment he interacted with our son. He had no right to address the law the way that he did, took Michael Brown, jr. , our son and its were really lost with words on how to express ourselves about it because were trying to stay humble and not to be so upset to where its a situation where im surprised where we havent even lost our mind yet over there. If they dont return an indictment, will you take to the streets and protest . Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because the fight would not be over. The movement will be like i like we said earlier in the last interview, we understand that our son is gone, but the movement will be that were trying to make sure that this doesnt happen to anyone else. No that no one else has to feel how we feel. So, yes, the protests will carry on. I want to bring in cnns sara sidner in missouri and Peniel Joseph in boston, the contributing editor for the root and a history professor at Tufts University and he covered this story day in day out this summer. Sara, youve been in ferguson. Whats the feeling there among people . What are you hearing . Weve talked to dozens and dozens of people because ive been here for about two months just talking to different folks from protesters to pastors to residents to the police, to the prosecuting attorneys office. What were hearing on the streets, what were hearing from residents and protesters and police is that there is a great deal of worry about what is going to happen on the ground when the grand jury decision comes down, especially that desuggestion is not to indict officer darren wilson, the protesters have made clear that is the only thing ultimately that they want immediately and then beyond that there are other issues that have been brought up. But certainly there is consternation. Weve seen businesses boarding up. We know theres a spike in gun sales for from folks who are concerned about their own safety. The protesters for their part, brianna, have been saying, look, weve been out protesting everyday for 91 days now and it has been mostly peaceful. The police will agree with that but there have been some incidents where that has not been the case. Just a couple, but you have no keep people pretty nervous because of what happened for a couple of days back in august. Brianna . And youre seeing on your screen were awaiting comments from Governor Nixon. Thats the thing, peniel, were waiting for him to announce what the preparations are. How police will respond to these possible protests once the grand jury decision comes out. But is this really something he can plan for . I think he can plan for it, brianna. But the plan has to be with in mind what happened last august when we saw the overmilitarization of the Ferguson Police. People will go to the streets to pursue justice. The plan by activist there is is going to be to do it nonviolently. In all nob Violent Movement there iss always going to be people on the fringes on those protests who try to do some kind of violence. But overall what the governor can do is make sure that whether its the National Guardtor local Ferguson Police or st. Louis county police that the measures they do are going to be protective measures but nonviolence against civil rights demonstrators in ferguson. I want to tell you what some of though prose testese protest. One says until the governor chooses to truly address the systemic issues that the murder of Michael Brown brought to the surface for Many Americans, no press release or Commission Board will truly help this community move forward from this tragedy. So this goes beyond, theyre saying, what a grand jury decides. This case is something that revealed so much mistrust between people of ferguson and the police and thats something we see duplicated in communities across the country, right . Absolutely. This is a case about democracy, race and class intersect here. Its a case about poverty and its also about voting because the local people in ferguson dont have local political power. And if they did, if they had a mayor or a city council, irrelevant respective of the color, but who were attending to their needs we would have seen the violence we saw. So this is a movement about zem zi and its interesting because next year is going to be the 50th anniversary of selma and the passage of the Voting Rights act. Can i ask you about that . You say theyre not able to vote and yet we saw i think it was last week on the ballot was the local prosecutor whos been so controversial in all of this and yet only four in ten people in ferguson voted. So, i mean, i look at that and i see maybe is there a lack of organization telling people that they can make a difference . Do they feel disenfranchised, peniel . Well, yeah. I do think they feel disenfranchised. They have the right to vote in ferguson but theres been i wont even say political apathy, but local people havent had a reason to vote. So there hasnt been the kind of grassroots organizing thats telling people if they votes this how the vote is going to change and transform their lives. And at the same time, theyve been harassed by the local criminal justice system, so many young black men are outstanding traffic violations and traffic warrants and are being shipped from prison to prison for unpaid traffic fines and these are men who young men and women who are largely unemployed in ferguson and the st. Louis county area. Sara, one of the, i think, criticisms that we saw of authorities when the protests were going on early on was that they focused on protesters, they overly focused on some Peaceful Protesters and that they werent effective in defending some of the businesses in ferguson that really this was a place where you could almost see it become sort of an economic desert. How are businesses preparing, besides, as you mentioned, maybe owners are buying guns . What else are they doing . Well, look, a lot of them have just been boarding up. The city is helping kind would have that fefrt they felt like they needed to board up to keep, for example, their windows intact. They are doing that. Some of them telling us theyre going to not be in there businesses when that announced comes out or perhaps they will close their doors. But to be fair again over these past 90 plus days the police have changed their tactics. They have really stood down in a lot of protests, trying not to escalate the situation and they were roundly criticized. There have been conversations that a lot of folks arent talking about because, you know, it hasnt been front and center and they have been privately meeting but theres been a lot of meetings going on in the background. Between residents, protesters, police talking, trying to talk through some of these this to try and keep things peaceful. Many, many, many protesters. There were 3,000 protesters a couple of weekends ago and police themselves told me, look, that all went smoothly. There were lots of people in town from out of town but it went smoothly and weve been there nightly watching protests happen and for the most part they have been peaceful and a lot of folks are hoping thats whats going to happen going forward. However, we know there is a small group of folks that are planning something other than that and the protesters have been telling people if you plan on being violent you are not a part of this movement. Brianna . And we are actually it looks like things are moving there near ferguson, missouri, we are expecting the governor to be coming in very shortly and to announce what his preparations for ferguson are as we expect this grand jury decision to come down. Lets listen in. Good afternoon. For those of you here from out of state, my daniel is daniel isham and i have been the director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety. Previously i was chief of police for the st. Louis metropolitan Police Department and most recently a professor in the criminology and criminal Justice Department at the university of missouri, st. Louis. I made the decision to join the department of Public Safety ten weeks ago because of the Critical Issues that were before all of us in Law Enforcement. And because of the opportunity to make a difference in the community, my community where i grew up and where my family and i make our home. But also key to joining dps was the promise that Governor Nixon gave me. He told me he was committed to bringing people together, to establishing missouri as a model for improving relations between police and the community we serve. He understood that this was not simply a Law Enforcement issue and he was committed to more han simply getting through a crisis situation. He was committed to confronting issues that had simmered below the surface in American Society for too long. Thats why i signed up. And thats why all of us are here and committed to accomplishing that end. It is my honor to introduce the 55th governor of the state of missouri, jay nixon. Thank you, dan, we are tremendously fortunate that someone with director isoms Law Enforcement experience and academic credentials leading the department of Public Safety. Were also joined today by chief sam dodson, a st. Louis metropolitan Police Department, chief john bell bher the st. Louis county Police Department, captain ron johnson of the Missouri StateHighway Patrol, also major Brett Johnson head of Field Operations for Highway Patrol as well as colonel commander of our Missouri StateHighway Patrol. As governor, the most important part of my job is keeping the people of missouri safe. Families must be able to see their kids off safely to school in the morning, walk their neighborhoods at night, and keep the doors of their businesses open without fear for their lives or property. Citizens must also have the right to express themselves peacefully without being threatened by individuals intent on creating violence and disorder. In the days immediately following Michael Browns death, peaceful protests were marred by senseless acts of violence and destruction. Vandals smashed the windows of small businesses, criminals looted and set fire to stores. Gunshot and molotov cocktails endangered citizens exercising their First Amendment rights in Law Enforcement attempting to maintain peace. That ugliness was not remitty of missouri and it can not be repeated. The st. Louis county prosecutor has not announced the exact date of the decision will be made, only that it will be in mid to late november. Theist department of justice is also conducting both civil and criminal investigations. That is why we have been working around the clock to prepare to keep the residents and businesses of st. Louis region safe regardless of the outcome of the parallel local and federal investigations. Officers from the missouri Highway Patrol, st. Louis county police and st. Louis city police will operate as a unified command to protect the public. The National Guard will be available when we determine it is necessary to support local Law Enforcement we must and will be fully prepared. Law enforcement Planning Efforts include coordination with fire service, ems and other services that may have to respond. Law enforcement agencies are prepared to extend shifts and limit leave while the patrol will be bringing in officers from across our state to provide support as needed to local jurisdictions. The department of Public Safety distributed equipment to make sure the agencies involve canned communicate effectively with each other. These measures are not being taken because we are convinced that violence will occur but because we have a responsibility to prepare for any contingency. The public demands and i demand that. This coordinated effort will be guided by our core principles. Keeping the public safe while allowing people to speak. This is america. Supreme a right to express their views and grievances but they do not have the right to put their fellow citizens or their property at risk. Over the past two months more than a thousand Law Enforcement officers have gone through more than 5,000 hours of specialized training with an emphasis on protecting the Constitutional Rights of peaceful demonstrators. The Law Enforcement leaders behind me have spent the last few months going into the community, to churches, schools, businesses, to listen to peoples conference and develop strategies to specifically address them. We also continue to have productive conversations with faith; civil rights and protest leaders about concrete ways we can facilitate peaceful expression while maintaining Public Safety. With these shared principles comes a shared expectation that Peaceful Protesters, Community Leaders and clergy will work with Law Enforcement to identify individuals intent on causing violence and committing crimes so that Law Enforcement may address those individuals in order to protect Public Safety. As ive said before, violence will not be tolerated. The residents and businesses of this region will be protected. With that, id like to turn it over to the leaders of the unified command. These three men with us today represent thousands of Law Enforcement officers here in the st. Louis region who have been working day and night in difficult and often dangerous circumstances to keep the peace and protect the public. First let me introduce the chief of the st. Louis metropolitan Police Department, chief sam dodson. All right, you are listening there to governor jay nixon of missouri talk about preparations that are in place once a grand jury does issue a decision in the Michael Brown case. We dont know what thats going to be. We dont know if there are going to be any charges against the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, officer darren wilson. But, of course, as i bring in mel, there are a lot of concerns that protests may result from this. Weve heard from the Justice Department it looks like there arent going to be civil charges so then a lot of folks think maybe hes not going to be charged at all and that is obviously going to upset people, not just in ferguson but all across the country. I guess my question is watching this here, is this pr . Is this him saying we have all these people in place or can he actually prepare for fallout . F there are not charges . Its a terrific question. I think the tone of that press conference that we just saw was dont even think about it because were going to be ready for this. And its important because he does have an obligation and he said it multiple times and it was very refreshing to hear him say that our obligation is to not only protect the safety of the residents and businesses here in ferguson but also to make sure that people have an outlet to be able to voice their grievances. Now, interestingly, we keep focusing on the fact that were gearing up for protests, right . But if there is an indictment and theyre not ready, you can see people storm the streets in celebration which weve seen with sporting events where people turn violent and start looting and lighting things on fire. So i think in either case whether you have an indictment or not you could see and will see people take to the streets and i am very happy, as im sure both Michael Browns family 1 and the residents of ferguson are to see that they are getting themselves organized and prepared for what will be a very emotional reaction to this verdict. Either way. Do you think theyre ready here . I think that theyre as ready as they can be and certainly looking at daniel isom who is now going to be the head of the department of safety and looking at his background as the former chief of police of st. Louis and his academic background and that with him joining forces with captain ron johnson who seems to have been a very powerful force in terms of having the Tipping Point occur from violence to actually people being able to express themselves he was much more empathetic as we saw in the days following. And i thinks been very, very clear frustration between the folks that live in ferguson and Michael Browns family and supporters who are saying, hey, theres a message to get out here but lets do it without violence and people that are coming in from the outside and trying to take advantage of the situation and agitating things. Protesters dont want their named besmirched because of looters who take advantage of it. Thanks so much for joining us. That is an explosion in the Syrian Border city of kobani where much of this documentarystyle video is set. We wont show you the most horrific images of isis victims, but this video also uses clips of correspondents reporting from the besieged area, and news reports from western media showing World Leaders at one point showing word leaders really disapproving of what isis has done. At one point, a voiceover calls president obama and president bush liars and vowing that isis wont be defeated while another clip right here appears to show isis fighters shooting down a military helicopter in iraq. Three different terror groups could be uniting to form a Killer Alliance in syria. They are all targeted in u. S. Led air strikes in the region. But now the daily beast is reporting the Khorasan Group are broker ago merge we are Syrias Al Qaeda cell, al nusra, and the barbaric islamic militants known as isis. This while egypts militant group is pledging allegiance to isis, according to a report by the new york times. Lets bring in robert mcfadcfad a transnational terrorism expert. Theres so much to talk about here. Before we talk about this Egyptian Group saying it wants to b part of isis, what strikes me as odd is the al nusra front, didnt al qaeda reject isis because it tried to do a grab of al nusra . Whats going on here . First, i might be a contrarian here but put into historical perspective, never has been a mono lith and little chance there will be even at this point. So with that being said, youre right. At the leadership levels, al qaeda core back in afghanistan, pakistan, ayman al zawahiri, has rejected isis and its leadership over this Islamic State thing. So on the ground were seeing circumstances that may speak to alliances of convenience which will likely be fleeting and maybe even some of the senior down range people from al qaeda there what were calling khorasan right now might be brokering these kind of things. But understand at the top it can never work because, again, of the Islamic State. Theres no chance al zawahiri and al qaeda would ever say okay, were throwing in under isis. So it feels like safety in numbers. It feels like these guys are just trying to band together and be more scary and isis is the scariest name so lets join up. Is that what were seeing in egypt where were seeing the military group that wants to be a part of isis . Is that just this group trying to be more legitimate . I think you hit the nail on the head. Were talking about a group ha has been fighting against the Egyptian Military and Border Guards in a violent way in sinai. And Many Americans maybe have never heard of the group but theyve certainly heard of isis. Thats right. But see this group in egypt, where the biggest deal is for egypt itself. The Chilling Effect it would have on tourism or outside investment and if the group then decides to indiscriminately go against civilian target which is hasnt been the thing up to this point, but, again, for international notoriety and latching on to isis, but also within the group were talking about in egypt there are reports that theres a fractious nature between the leadership in sinai and to the west of the nile. So you see, what happens with these groups, they really form along local circumstances, tribes and clans and so even themselves under the same banner at the end of the day often arent in alignment. Thanks for explaining it to us, robert. Really appreciate it. My pleasure. Just ahead, attacks against israelis on the rise as tensions break out from jerusalem to the west bank. Almost daily violence in israel raising new worries about stability in the region. Tensions include deadly incidents in jerusalem, gaza and the west bank. Earlier today, israeli troops killed a palestinian man during clashes in a west Bank Refugee Camp and on monday a 20yearold israeli soldier was fatally stabbed at a tel aviv bus stop. Three israelis were stabbed, one of them killed near a west bank settlement. Lets head to jerusalem and bring in our Senior International correspondent nick robertson. Nick there are serious concerns these relatively smallscale incidents could really explode and grow into something much bigger. There really is and thats a huge concern at the moment. When you listen to the state of the political rhetoric that weve heard, Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu saying he will send more troops into the west bank to keep security there. That he will put tougher penalties on though protesters, potentially even finding their parents. He also said the Palestinian Authority president , mahmoud abbas, is lying when he says that israel is trying to bring about a religious war overaccess to religious sites inside jerusalem. Weve heard the palestinian president alleging that today against Prime Minister netanyahu. So when you listen to the Political Leadership you can hear the tension there. But when analysts look at this they say okay, right now we can not see a coherent push by a particular group to bring about what might be called the third intifa intifada. They say look at the last one in 2002. In a month back then there were 122 israeli deaths. Now were looking at just a couple of deaths a week. Terrible and bad but not at the state it was sbofr they dont see this organization trying to drive this current violence higher but there is real concern of a spark because things are so tense right now that a spark could escalate h into something that has been seen before. Its smaller scale but as you said still concern and well be watching because of that. Nic robertson, thank you very much. Its veterans day and were recognizing our nations warriors with medals and ceremonies. Jake tapper visits a prison that shows the less talked about side of prisons. Across america as we thank our veterans, cnns jake tapper is talking to veteran whose postmilitary career has led them to prison. Jake, i think that lot of people dont know this is happening. We speed a lot of time on the lead talking about veterans, people who who have been awarded high honors, distinctions, the medal of honor but a lot of veterans come back and have struggles and some of them even fall through the cracks so we went to the hanesville correctional prison in virginia and spent time in the special dormitory that is just veterans and they try to provide these veterans with guidance on what to do when they leave. Its for their last two years of their sentences. And it really was quite a remarkable situation. They a lot of these Veterans First of all can draw a line from their combat experience to how they ended up there, usually because of drugs and posttraumatic stress disorder. But also a lot of them didnt know what to do once they got out of the military and theyre finding themselves getting guidance in prison that they did not get from the military when they left. Theres this one gentleman we spoke with, jimmy jackson, he was incarcerated because he was forging checks to pay the rent, to pay for food. I asked him what do you want people to know about veterans in prison . What do you want people to know when you come to them trying to get a job . Were all human, we all mess up. But we do try to correct what we did. Like they said, hopefully people like they take chances in us and help us progress in life, progress further than what we were helping us out if we need it. Pretty much just kind of be there. Thats what a lot of us lack is just somebody there. It was quite a remarkable experience and i have to say, brianna, obviously we dont want to stigmatize veterans, most veterans come back and become law abiding members of society, contribute, have no problems segueing. But there are those who slip through the cracks and we felt it was important to Pay Attention to some of them on veterans day. Its it certainly is and its also interesting, some of their shared experiences that we have this maybe folks whove come back and certainly been more successful. There are a lot of issues out there thats important to talk about. Jake tapper, thanks so much, well watch the lead with you at the top of the hour. I cant tell you how many nights how many nights my wife would sit in the light looking at the bottom of my feet to make sure that there really wasnt any glass in them. The doctors tell me that up until recently i hadnt had any real rem sleep in maybe as long as a decade. I know when i couldnt figure out simple math problems or i was in real trouble. I was told at the time that i would have somewhere between five and ten years before i would no longer be able to function. I would be like that old man except i would be 55. Joining me now to talk about this, the host of hlns dr. Drew on call and host of reliable sources, brian stelter. I want to ask you first, drew, what glenn beck is suffering. He talks about adrenal fatigue. They are horrible symptoms he describes. Autoimmune syndrome, what autoimmune syndrome . And i challenge everyone to find adrenal fatigue. What he did that can explain everything is the sleep disorder. If you look at people who have severe fibromyalgia, you often find a profound sleep disturbance and i think thats his primary problem. Brian, this is pretty fans nating because yfascinating because you interviewed glenn beck over the summer. He dropped no hints about it during the summer. He talked about how hes trying to move away from politics, which he says he doesnt care much about, and towards culture. He talked about how hes taken his personal issues to decide what really matters, what really is important to him. In this case, not so much politics but culture. Hes a polarizing, political guy but he wants to evolve his business in a way that he cares about it and i think health plays into that. Youre a guy who is struggling what is wrong with you. I think hes coming out now talking about his past Health Problems because hes ready to reinvigorate his business, the programming, add new shows. I think hes explaining it to you v viewers before he announces something for the future. Some people have suggested that its kind of a ploy or even if its real hes just using it to benefit off of it. You know, ive had people ask, is he somehow supported financially by the hospital that he went to . Because he was singing the praises of this brain center that he says really made a difference and helped him turn the corner. Well, no, there is not a financial relationship there but the fact that these questions get asked show how polarizing this man is. Theres nobody like him. He himself says that he acts somewhat paranoid. For a while he was wondering if he had been poisoned. I guess i was understanding why he was having to question everything. Because if youre faced by a mysterious sort of disease like this you really do start to question it. And dr. Drew, i wonder if that isnt one of the reasons why people are so fascinated by this. There are a lot of people who have symptoms. Maybe theres a solution or a cure . Well, who hasnt felt pains in their limbs, mood disorders, fogginess, difficulty concentrating . Thats something that we at some point or another but this is at the a point where its a medical syndrome. I want to emphasize, he has not told us what it is yet but the fact that hes not calling it fibromyalgia, i think its actually a disservice to people who have fibromyalgia. That syndrome needs to be discussed. Its a disabling condition that a lot of people suffer from and hes doing the kind of treatment that people normally get to recover from it. So hes doing all right but hes sleeping better, reducing the stress and taking care of his Emotional Health and that improved the syndrome. Dr. Drew pinsky, thank you so much. Brian stelter, thank you so much. Not many people can get away with making fun of the president. But george h. W. Bush was the target of some goodnatured guests who knows him pretty well. And it helps keep your mouth healthy too. Remember, while your medication is doing you good, a dry mouth isnt. Biotene, for people who suffer from a dry mouth. A wakeup call. But its not happening out there. Its happening in here. [ sirens wailing ] inside of you. Well, across much of the united states, recordbreaking snow and bonechilling cold. Winter is still more than a month away. What is up with that . We have a storm system straight from the arctic and its blasting parts of the midwest and great lakes and as heavy snow fell in marquette, michigan, visibility was just about zero. Some areas are buried under a foot of snow and more is on the way. Even parts of the deep south will be in the deep freeze. College station, texas, witnessed a poignant moment of history with an event honoring George Herbert walker bush. Bush 41, as we sometimes say. A memoir was written by his son, bush 43. It mattered to be able to get these notes from dad or phone calls from dad. Because in that he was president , he knew what the pressures of the job were like and he knew moments could be very trying and to have him interject a note really made a difference. Theres a lot of psycho babble about our relationship and thats not exactly our long suit here in our family. But anyway, there was people cant possibly comprehend and hopefully this book one reason ive written is when you admire somebody as much as we have all admired george h. W. Bush, any offers help and or comfort, it means more than any advice he could possibly give. He said he wrote the book because his fathers term was overshadowed by Ronald Reagan and said that his father was the greatest oneterm president in history. Im brianna keilar. The lead with jake tapper starts right now. Vladimir putin feels a chill in the air. Im jake tapper. This is the lead. The world lead. Alarm bells went off in china where the actions of World Leaders seem to be getting all of the attention. But what we want to know is what were these two talking about on the sidelines.
