Stress. So we follow these guys before they go and then through their five and a half days, which seems so incredibly short, right . And the thbl transformation that happens on the other end. I asked jay clark, who started the program, how is this a cure . Five and a half days seems insane. And he said its not a cure. Its a way to show another path if youre going down that path that youre so desperate youre done. That suicide is the option. This sort of opens up another path. And with hard work, you can go another direction. There is another sort of way to go that has some hope. I think the main thing, though, or one of the many things that seems to be working is the brotherhood. Remember, a lot of these guys and women go off to war, have this brotherhood, if you will. And then they come home. And its like they theyre isolated. They come home and theyre isolated and dealing with all of the things that happen when you have post traumatic stress. So really, what we saw through save a warrior was remarkable in that five and a half day window. Save a warrior, save a warrior, i read about it for quite a while today and well look for it in the documentary. Thank you so much for sharing their stories. Thank you. My pleasure. Watch it, onehour special, the war comes home hosted by soledad obrien, tuesday night. So tomorrow night, 9 00 here on cnn. Thank you so much. You bet, my pleasure. And we continue hour two. Youre watching cnn, im brooke baldwin. We begin this hour in iraq with the terrifying fate of those yazidi refugees. Here they are on the top of this mountain, mt. Sinjar. Tens of thousands of them are stuck, circled at the base of this mountain by these isis militants. Theyre running against the clock, trying to stay alive, little food, water, and in the blazing iraqi summer. Its Something Like a scorching 122 degrees at this time of year at the top of this mountain. And what were about to show you, it brings home exactly how horrifying their situation is. Ivan watson joined iraqi and kurdish soldiers on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to the refugees. The photo journalist, Mark Phillips there. This is what happened when they arrived at the mountain. And now cnns ivan watson joins me on the phone from iraq. Ivan, can you hear me . Reporter i hear you, brooke. Wonderful. You and mark, your cameraman, inside of this helicopter here. I understand you all took isis fire as you were leaving and returning. Tell me about this trip. Reporter its pretty scary. And i think these Iraqi Air Force crews and the peshmerga who go with them are heroes. They go in, guns blazing, flying across the isis front lines to get to this mountain where these stricken people are desperate. They are simply desperate. And they deliver i mean, they have to shoot machine guns to go deliver baby diapers and food and water. And babies milk to the people trapped on this mountain, brooke. And then they take as many as they can get. Its chaotic. Its not organized. There is nobody who is in charge on the ground. And they bring these people back who just fall to pieces the moment they get into the helicopter. There wasnt a dry eye aboard that helicopter. And sadly, they had to shoot on the return trip, shooting down at isis front lines, which totally terrified little kids who were already traumatized aboard the aircraft. But that was the only protection that the air force crew had for the passengers who they were evacuating and the helicopter itself. Brooke . Just looking at some of the pictures, seeing a lot of teary eyes and the children, as you mentioned. Just cannot imagine being a young person on a helicopter, trapped with your family. As you pointed out, machine gunfire just to deliver babies. And it looked to me inside the capacity of this helicopter only a handful of people. How many people remain at the top of the sinjar mountain . Reporter i could see during we were only over the mountain for probably ten minutes, fifteen minutes, topped. Circling, dropping off the emergency food and water, and medicine. And then picking up these people. Could see hundreds of people down below. And those numbers could be much lower. Kurdish Officials Say there are tens of thousands still trapped on the mountain. And in some places, you could see probably more than 100 cars all parked in a cluster, which gives you a sense of how many people fled their home villages and hometown a week ago to this place, to this refuge on a hill. It was a large number of people. And as we flew around in circles, you could see the families cluttered under trees in the shade. So they appear to be spread out. Brooke . What, ivan, did people tell you, tell the soldiers on board this helicopter after it landed . Reporter you know, brooke, there was this 15yearold girl wearing purple clothes. She was beautiful. And she was inconsolable. As the other people got on board the helicopter, and eventually their shock gave way to relief and they started smiling and hugging each other and they were clearly relieved that their ordeal on the mountain was over. This girl just kept crying and crying and crying. 15yearold aziza. And she was saying wheres my father, wheres my father . And her father had gotten separated from the rest of the family when they fled the isis militants a week ago. The family says they hid in basically a sewer as isis was capturing civilians and putting them under lock and key in a wedding hall and in a building used to store water in. And so the rest of the family escaped, the father, i was told, was able to make phone calls to the family for two days. He was holed up in some house and then his phone went dead. And they havent heard from him since. So for 15yearold aziza, this was not a celebration. She is out of harms way, but she and her brother and sister dont know where their father is right now. There are no words, no words for this in iraq. Ivan watson, to you and Mark Phillips, your photo journalist, for capturing these absolutely stunning images. We appreciate both of you. And let me just bring him right in. Bob baer, Cnn National Security analyst, live in irvine, california, former cia. When you just listen to the conversation, to ivans point, you know, this helicopter goes in. It is shooting gunfire just to be able to deliver water and baby diapers and food. Its gut wrenching. It is. I mean, these i cannot say enough how bad these people are. The the Islamic State, the sunni militants. They would if they could get ahold of these people, kill them all. They look at them as having fallen away from islam, and it would be instant execution. So the fact that the kurds have gone in there and saved them is quite amazing. And i think what lesson here for us is, United States has to arm the kurds. Its the only safe haven in iraq right now. The Central Government is broken, as we have seen in baghdad today. And the kurds are good fighters. I spent a couple years with them. They can take care of these people. And the more aid we give them, the more were going to avoid a humanitarian disaster. Well, we now know the u. S. Is arming the kurds. There is a shipment en route. This is according to our cnn reporting in the last hour or so. So the u. S. Will be arming the kurds. But is that really enough, bob . Its not enough right now. Were going to need the air force to keep the Islamic State off the roads. They have got heavy armor. Theyve got armored humvees. They can outgun the kurds right now and until those weapons come, were going to have to do the job along with the turks, as well. You know, this could get a lot worse before it gets better, until those arms get there. Youre absolutely right. The air force needs to help. So once the air force hopefully steps in, once the kurds are armed and the u. S. Continues, because we do not know how long this air Strike Campaign can go, i mean, do you really think in time isis could be destroyed . I think isis will destroy itself over the years. But in the meantime, we have to face reality, which we havent since 2003. The state of iraq does not exist. Its time for partition. The kurds need to have an area, the sunnis need an area and so do the shia. Its the only out in iraq. Theres no point in pasting this Government Back together with a new Prime Minister. As long as its a radical shia government. And thats what Nouri Al Maliki was. He was a member of dawa, that blew up beirut in 1983. And part of the same party. The country is hopelessly divided. The state department has to face reality and partition it. Keep hearing from the white house, needs an inclusive government. That is part that is one step on this whole journey. But isis and this humanitarian catastrophe, priority number one, it seems. Bob baer, thank you. Coming up next, a call for justice from a Community Outraged over the death of an unarmed black teenager. When do we want it . Now what do we want . Justice the march today to remember this young man, 18yearold Michael Brown, shot by a Police Officer over the weekend in ferguson, missouri, triggering massive protests and looting. My next guest is calling out the police force and the mayor and even the looters. Why he has harsh words for all. Next. Moderate to severe is tough, but ive managed. I got to be pretty good at managing my symptoms, except that managing my symptoms was all i was doing. When i finally told my doctor, he said my crohns was not under control. He said humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohns disease. And that in clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. And many achieved remission. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. If youre still just managing your symptoms, ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. He will name the officer who shot 18yearold Michael Brown in the next 24 hours. He says Ferguson Police is holding off, revealing the name until the officer can get to a safe location. The medical examiner also says Michael Browns autopsy is complete. And the results will be revealed by the st. Louis county police. Today, it was supposed to be a first day of college, of Technical School for this young st. Louis area man. But it has become a second day of protests after his death. No justice, no peace stop the killer cop so far today, no looting, no gunfire, no violence, unlike the last 24 hours in this city. But the anger has not subsided. Michael brown was not carrying a weapon when that ferguson, missouri, Police Officer shot and killed him saturday. There are also conflicting reports under investigation. Brown and a friend were reportedly jaywalking when the officer approached them. This is when it it gets murky. We dont have the details yet. We talk to a witness. This young mans hands were up in the air when the officer shot and killed him, the witness says. Police, they say brown was shot in a struggle over this Police Officers gun. What is clear is that some people took advantage of the public outcry, by going after not only police, but by crashing through store window after store window, looting private businesses. 32 people were arrested. Two Police Officers injured. Amid all that looting and the violence, even the police chief was hit, was shot at. The bullets didnt hurt him, but the sight of his community in turmoil is. It breaks my heart. Last night was the worst night of my life. I have never seen anything like it, and i hope i never see anything like it again. Right now, this is peaceful. And theyre telling me and telling the city that they theyre not happy with what happened, the way things are, and they want answers. And i understand that. All of this brings me to this latest cnn. Com opinion piece, penned by lz granderson, entitled how many unarmed people have to die. And lz joins me now. Lz, welcome. Thank you very much, brooke, for having me. You opened your piece with three little words, i am tired. Explain how. Sure. So ive been a journalist now for going on 20 years. Ive been on cnn for about four or five years. And it just seems as if im constantly writing this story. This story of unarmed africanamerican being gunned down, basically. Sometimes its by a Police Officer, sometimes by a vigilante. Sometimes its by a guy who thinks your music is too loud. And i just got to the point, as i was sitting down with my computer, and i was just exhausted. I was exhausted mentally, emotionally, because i keep writing this story. And so thats why i started with i am tired and i carried that theme throughout the piece. Because im tired of this story and i think Many Americans are tired of this story. And its time we start pushing back against the elements that has this story repeat itself over and over again. Lz, you had a pretty blunt reaction along the i am tired theme, a pretty blunt reaction when you saw the video of the looters, many of whom, most of whom are africanamerican. What did you say . I basically said that i am as disgusted or i viewed them as much hate as i do with the kkk. And the truth is, if there is anyone who follows my writing over the years, anyone who has been listening to me over the years, know ive been very consistent in pointing out wrongdoing, regardless of the color of the person doing the wrongdoing. And so when i saw those women running down the street with stolen bags of fake hair, i was just livid. Here we are, trying to find some sort of peace, trying to find justice for this young man who has been gunned down, and theyre taking advantage of the situation. You know, its if you know anyone, and im speaking to the viewers. If you know anyone who looted, if you know who may have fired at that Police Officer at the police chief, its your responsibility to call the police and have those people arrested. Because theyre not part of the solution. They are part of the larger problem. You know, im curious. And we just heard from the police chief well find out the identity of the officer who shot and killed this young man in the next 24 hours. Ive got two very different opinions when i talk to a member of the naacp in st. Louis county and don lemon and i would love your response. The question being, does it matter, the color of that officers skin . What do you think . No. It does not matter. Because its about the color of the victim. Africanamericans, black people, are just as susceptible to the negative stereotypes of what a black man is and represents as anyone who is not black or africanamerican. I dont think it matters. But it matters in the way that we cover it. Because there are different nuances. But in the big picture, we all should be outraged, regardless of the color of the shooter, regardless of the color of the murderer. Ultimately what happens is, someone sees a black male, typically a black male, and think theyre up to no good. They think that theyre dangerous. I can remember stories in which an unarmed black man has been shot and killed and Police Officers say things like, he had super human strength or he was incredibly strong. Somehow equating us to a beast, and were humans and we bleed and we arent seen as vulnerable. That to me is the larger story. Not the color of the shooter. You say youre tired. Im tired, quite frankly, lz. I dont know who isnt tired of these kinds of stories. Lz granderson, read his piece, cnn. Com opinion. I appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. On saturday, during the sprint car race in new york, stewart was involved in a crash that sent a Young Drivers car into the wall. Kevin ward jr. Climbed out of the car. Here it was, walked across the track. Apparently pointing at stewart. Now stewart then hit him, sending the 20yearold to his death. Stewart called it an accident and said, quote, my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone affected by this tragedy. Lets talk more about what happened on the track this weekend. Im joined by cnns rachel nichols, host of unguarded and cnns chad myers who previously worked as a stock car pit reporter. Chad, let me ask you first. Tony stewart, for people who do not know nascar, has a reputation as a hot head. But is he considered reckless . But some, sure. You know, the guy has a widely public scrutiny here, because, you know, of the old times where he had anger management issues. He worked on those, became a much better guy to be around. And now this happened. So this is a tragic event. It was a dark racetrack, a man wearing a dark uniform, standing in the middle of a dark racetrack. I cant put more things in line to make it more tragic than this. Heres my question to rachel im not an avid nascar watcher. Could you explain to me why someone if a race is going around and cars are whipping around a track, why you would get out of your car . Sitting here, you would think that would be ridiculous. But when youre in the heat of the moment, it is actually more common than you think, for guys who are angry to confront the guy who think they did it. Part of it is heat and passion. Remember, they were under caution at this time so in his mind, hes walking across the racetrack where the cars are going slower. And part of it, frankly, is a little bit of the machismo of the racing culture, you cant do this to me. I want you to look at something. Tony stewart two years ago, actually was in an incident with matt kenseth where kenseth ran him off the track in a way he thought cost him the race. As kenseth is coming down pit road, stewart, who at this point is out of his race car, approaches him, as hes moving, and throws his helmet at him. So this is something that we see, time and time again. Not usually this dramatic, this shows where people sometimes think tony stewart has anger issues. But it does happen. In fact, a few hours before the tragic incident on saturday night, over down the road at watkins glen in the nationwide race, a driver got ran off the course, got out of his car, went right up to the edge of where they were racing and started yelling and pointing and trying to get to the guy who did it to him. It happens more than you think. You would have to hope after this incident it wouldnt happen as much again. Oh, my gosh. I just had no idea. Rachel nichols and chad myers, thank you both very much. Horrible, horrible story. Coming up next, this. Exclusive video of a helicopter delivering food and water to refugees trapped in iraq. You can see the forces firing as they fly away to protect themselves from possible isis attacks from the ground. More on this video and a closer look at the weaponry isis is using. Thats next. I want to come right up, just go ahead and show the video. This is absolutely stunning stuff. Because we have been talking for days about this mt. Sinjar in northern iraq. Were finally seeing these men, women, children, these families on the top of this rocky hillside and start racing in. Because heres this helicopter, iraqis, its the kurds, the peshmerga, working together, guns blazing. You see them the gunners on the sides of this helicopter, finally going in. They are dropping diapers, milk, water, food, for the people so desperately in need. The people who have fled to mt. Sinjar, and that mountain, as you know shall surrounded by those isis militants. And this was our camera crew, Mark Phillips, helping pull people in, trying to get some of the kids, children to safety in a way ivan described it to me. Once they realized they were safe, he said it was an explosion of tears. So as we stay on the video, im going to bring in michael weise, columnist for Foreign Policy and now lebanon. And he has been very familiar with this part of the world. And just your first take watching this. Its incredibly harrowing. What worries me, this transport helicopter is exactly the kind of aircraft isis has the capability of shooting down. We talked about this before. Usf16s, f18 fighter jets conducting air strikes on iraq tend to be immune from what isis is capable of doing. They fly too high at an altitude. The guns you have to be careful of with isis are dushca, anti aircraft machine guns and zpu4. They have these in abundance, confiscated from syrian stockpiles and a few from iraqi stockpiles. I also mentioned before, a lot of guys in senior command were former iraqi military. So they know how to use these weapons. Soviet era weaponry. This is what worries me. The surfacetoair missiles they have probably arent going to hit u. S. Planes but these kinds of iraqi helicopters, very, very vulnerable. Ivan was telling me on tv, yes, we absolutely took isis fire going in. And coming out. Right. So whats key here, i think, is, look, the u. S. Is effectively providing air support to the peshmerga and i guess also Iraqi Security forces. You have to destroy the isis columns around mt. Sinjar. Otherwise these guys can pick off you know, convoys of troops. I refer to isis as troops, because they are. They resemble more conventional military than a terrorist organization. And, again, you know, the professionalism with which they know how to deploy, and mount these attacks is very, very alarming. So im sorry to say, i dont see the level of protection on these transports just yet. Its heroic. Thats what ive been saying over and over. These people are risking their lives to save the lives of what appear to be a dozen people who could fit on this helicopter and the rest just getting he was saying, i cannot believe the guns were blazing on either side of the helicopters to drop baby diapers. But that speaks to the dire situation on the mountain. And to your point, we talked about this before, much ado about the u. S. Weaponry that isis has taken hold. But theyre using russian weaponry. Right. They do have and thats pretty tough stuff. Everyone will recall the photographs and the videos showing when isis moved into mosul, and they sacked or didnt have to sack, because the military bases we have created were at sort sort of abandoned by the Iraqi Security forces, posing in front of humvees, m1 abrams tanks and these things. The key thing about this, this equipment is very, very difficult to maintain on the ground, particularly under the unforgiving conditions of the middle east. The sand. You need maintenance crews, specialists. It was difficult for a u. S. Forces to maintain this stuff, much less isis. So that worries me less than what they are very, very familiar with and what they know how to use really well, which is, again, this russianmade material. Michael weise, youre invaluable. Thank you so much. Columnist, Foreign Policy in lebanon now. Thank you, sir. Sure. Critics are calling out the white house on its Foreign Policy dealings with iraq, syria, even libya. Left spoke publicly saturday morning and then hopped on marine one. We now just got word the president will be speaking on the situation in iraq from the vineyard about an hour from now. 4 45 eastern time. Well take it here on cnn. The Obama White House sometimes does use the phrase dont do stupid stuff. As a shorthand for its dealings with the rest of the world. But former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, says it takes more than slogans to implement a Foreign Policy. In an interview with the atlantic, clinton says she would have armed the rebels, trying to topple syrian president bashar al assad, and that the obama administrations policy in syria has failed. Let me quote her. She says this to the atlantic. The failure to help build up a creditel fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against assad, there were islamists, secularists, everything in the middle, the failure to do that left a big vacuum which the jihadists have now filled. Lets talk about that with former house speaker, newt gingrich, now a host of cnns crossfire. Good to see you again. Good to be with you. And Jeffrey Goldberg got a remarkable interview, i think, of secretary clinton. Got to read the whole thing. Whole thing. And so she we know Hillary Clinton said she wanted to arm syrian rebels. My question to you is, wouldnt some of those people back then, newt, be the same people who we now know as isis . And are now wreaking havoc in iraq . Well, some of them would be, just as in libya some of them turned out to be. And in egypt, some of the Muslim Brotherhood turned out to be bad people. I think her point is, if youre not in the game, if youre not helping the others, you virtually guarantee bad people dominate. And thats certainly what happened there. I was impressed. This was the most candid, direct statement ive seen from secretary clinton since maybe halfway through the president ial campaign back in 2008. I thought she was very forceful. If you read it carefully, she makes some comments about the need for a strategic plan, the need to take on the jihadists across the whole region. I think she has been looking at the outcome in hamas, boko haram in nigeria and i think she is much more worried and much more sober than she has been in the last few years. And i think its real. I thought it was a very impressive interview. Very complimentary from you, newt gingrich. And she definitely does defend a lot of obamas policies. She says, you know, listen, he has faced all kinds of complex crises. Do you think its possible for her to link herself to the obama administration, to those successes, without then being saddled by what didnt work . Well, i think she did a pretty interesting step in this atlantic interview towards defining a unique Hillary Clinton position. She said how do you mean . Well, she said, when i think the president is right, im going to praise him and always be respectful of him. He was, after all, her leader for four years in the cabinet, more than four years in the cabinet. But she said there are places we disagree. And i think thats likely to widen, because i think the mess is going to get bigger. And she is going to be more dissatisfied with his lack of action over time. I also think she was very clearly decisively on the side of netanyahu, the Prime Minister of israel, and on israels right to defend itself, much firmer than secretary kerry or president obama than on the issue of israel and hamas. As we talk about iraq and as we talk about, you know, so far the u. S. Air Strike Campaign, no boots on the ground. Obamas whole stand on the sidelines approach, isnt he doing, nutrient, what the majority of americans prefer . Not necessarily. I think the majority of americans are sick and tired of not winning. Theyre tired of suffering the loss of americans and wounding of americans and the spending of trillions of dollars. The polls say be very cautious. You can have kurdish boots on the ground with american equipment. You can have a lot of things happen. You can ally yourself with egypt and jordan. There are many things you can do that dont involve american troops on the ground. And its not just a question of either being passive or having troops there. There are a lot of steps in between. And i think thats what secretary clinton was arguing for. She wasnt arguing for putting american troops in syria. She was arguing for training the syrians. And we should point out to everyone, Jeff Goldberg who did this interview from the atlantic, he will be on the lead with jake tapper in the next hour here on cnn. Newt gingrich, thank you so much. Good to be with you. Coming up, kids, some as young as 7 years old, joining the terror group isis, with their fathers fighting in countries like syria. Like iraq. 7. Whats going on . An australian boy just 7 years of age, pictured holding the decapitated head of a syrian soldier. Its tough to look at. It was posted on twitter by his own father. An australian now fighting under the black flag of isis militants. Joining me now writer producer amy laporte. Amy, what do we know about this guy and why are he and his 7yearold in syria . Its so disturbing. What we know his name is khalid. And hes basically a wanted man. Australian federal police are now hunting for him after this picture surfaced and it really hes been posting a lot of this stuff on his twitter account, brutal disgusting stuff from isis. This picture changed everything. His little boy, i mean you see him there in his polo shirt. His cap on. Hes struggling to hold the head of an adult man believed to be a syrian soldier and i mean, what we know about him, he was actually arrested and imprisoned in 2005 for a foiled terror plot to blow up targets in two of australias biggest cities, sydney and melbourne.
