It. Right now there are plans in motion to have both of them medevacked back home to the United States. In these specifically designed isolation planes that youre looking at, 1300 confirmed and suspected cases of the virus have now been reported and more than half of those people have died. Cnn has just lerntd the cdc plans to spend an additional 50 Health Specialists to west africa to fight this outbreak. While also raising a travel warning for that region. The peace corps, a major u. S. Organization is now pulling its volunteers out of the danger zone as officials in liberia warn the worst is yet to come. The matter has reached a crisis point. It is now rather just a liberian problem, a sara lee own, evidently an international problem. We need all the International Help and assistance we can get. Lets get as much information as we can get. Joining me is dr. Sanjay gupta, our chief medical correspondent at cnn. Sanjay, you just heard the cdc briefing. What happened . First of all, the headline was that this is getting worse, not better. Obviously not the news people wanted to hear, done. It was very stark in terms of what they were saying. Also best Case Scenario is still three to six months they think before this outbreak could be declared over. And thats just the best Case Scenario. So this is its far and away the worst Ebola Outbreak in our history. There have been simultaneous outbreaks as you pointed out in your graphic in three different countries, so very hard to control. Theyve made specific recommendations. Nonessential travellers from the United States to west africa should not go. Theyre saying theres enough of a concern that they should not go. They dont want them to possibly be exposed, but also if they were to get sick for some reason, need hospitalization for some reason, they could end up at a hospital where ebola is present. Theyre trying to avoid that situation. They did talk a little bit about the idea of evacuations. We dont know of any imminent plans for evacuations. You showed the possible plans for those planes should those americans become stable enough to actually move. I told you in the leadin about nancy wrightbol got the one experimental serum and the doctor turned it down and said she should get it. Tell us about the serum, where it came from and why so little . Theres a few Different Companies around the world working on vaccinetype medications, medications that would teach your immune system to basically fight off this virus. These vaccines are typically given before an illness. These are the types of vaccines that could be given after an illness as well. Its not approved. This is not something thats been used in humans clinically. I think thats part of the reason theres so very little of it. Its not something ever approved for mass vaccination. I will point out, interesting, dr. Brantly, the doctor over there, he actually received the blood of a 14yearold boy who had suffered from ebola and recovered from ebola. Thats very interesting, don. The reason thats done sometimes, not commonly done, but someone who has recovered from ebola, in their blood can be the antibodies to help fight the virus. If you give some of the blood from a recovered patient to, for instance, a doctor here, it might have some benefit. Theyre both trying things, right now the doctor and nancy, both of them, trying things not commonly done but may provide some benefit. Certainly frightening. We wish the best for them. Sanjay will be on top of this for the network. Well continue to tune in to sanjay. Two infected american aid workers dr. Kent brantley and missionary nancy wrightbol are continuing the fight for their lives. Her son speaking to cnn today. Mom continues in stable condition, but its very serious and shes still fighting as my dat dad told me. Shes weak but working through it. One piece of good news is that yesterday they were having a very difficult time getting an iv in to her for proper fluids. Dad told me this morning that one of the nurses thats part of the team thats attended to my mom and dr. Brantley was able to get an iv in on the first try. So were really happy about that this morning. As their pastor held a special service in charlotte, north carolina, on the other side of the world nancy was being given an experimental serum to try to save her life. The pastor, john monroe joins us now. John, thank you so much for joining us. Were all thinking about nancy, im sure you are as well. Have you heard anything about the use of this serum on nancy and what is the latest on her condition . I just heard what youve heard, don, that she has been given this. Were very thankful for that. Earlier this morning when we spoke with them, she seemed to be quite stable, resting quietly. Later in the day her condition seems to have worsened a bit, and then we got this latest news about this serum. So we continue to pray. Were very thankful that theyre getting the best medical help available, but above all, were crying out to the lord that he would heal nancy. Youve been in touch with nancys husband, david. I believe shes in isolation. Her husband cant be with her. Do you know the conditions of the facility that shes in now . She was in their home. So shes isolated there. David is kept from her, but he can, with protective clothing go in, have some contact with her. So theres contact which obviously is difficult for him. But theyre largely isolated. He feels like being imprisoned. They are just there in a dreadful situation. You can imagine the heartbreak from them. So we very much appreciate you giving this news so that people can cry out to the lord to help in the healing of nancy. Absolutely. Anything we can do for you. I have to ask you another question. She was a missionary there. I want you to tell me about her work and how in the course of this work she actually contracted this disease. They were missionaries, have been missionaries with our Calvary Church in charlotte since the 1990s. They came stateside and moved from an orphanage in zambia. They went to liberia, the hospital, school Radio Station in the outskirts of monrovia. David writebol had the responsibility of dealing with logistics, nancy dealing with Personnel Matters and also assisting in the hospital. Recently she was spraying down people who would go in and out of the hospital to minimize the spread of this deadly virus, and then sadly on saturday we got this terrible heartbreaking news that she had tested positive. To date david has not. His temperature is taken every about two or three times a day. Theres an incubation period of two to 21 days. Hes on day ten. So were thankful that to date he has not tested positive for the virus. John munro, were thinking about nancy and her husband david, the entire family. If you need anything, reach out to us, please. Thank you so much. Thank you. We have this just in to cnn, developing news. House republicans canceling a vote on their own border funding bill because the gop doesnt have enough support. We want to bring in our chief conditioni Congressional Correspondent dana bash. Pretty embarrassing . Thats an understatement. The Republican Leadership has been struggling not just all day, but for a week plus to try to cobble together a bill that can get enough votes in or dore pass, and they clearly were not successful. I was just talking to some Senior Republicans about why, and the main reason they said is because there were enough conservatives who didnt like the package that they put together because it didnt go far enough the package im talking about is money to address the border crisis and other policy changes, but they felt it didnt go far enough in reigning in the president to make sure he cant act on his own when it comes to immigration policy in the future. That is something that has been pushed by ted cruz in the senate. He met with several house conservatives yesterday to talk about that strategy. And one house Republican Leadership aide said ted cruz succeeded here. Its certainly embarrassing for house republicans, because to a person we have heard them say over and over again, even today on the house floor, that they want to do something to address the border crisis before leaving for a fiveweek recess. That is the other important thing. If you look at the house floor right now, they are having a vote. Its not on immigration. It is on another issue which is important. This is the last vote that theyre going to take, the last series before they leave for five weeks for summer break. And theyre going to leave without addressing this crisis at the border which everybody, democrats and republicans say they need to address, but obviously they have very, very different views and different approaches on how to address that. This is a big setback for republicans, but obviously a big setback for just broadly dealing with this crisis because the Administration Says they need that money, even a little bit of money and theyre not going to get it. Im sure everyone at home will agree and you as well. Five weeks. Must be nice. Thank you, dana bash, appreciate you. Just ahead, as tensions rise between the u. N. And israel, my northwest guest says Benjamin Netanyahu should be worried. Plus the american who blew himself up inside syria left behind a disturbing video with a direct threat toward the u. S. It helps you fall asleep quickly and wake refreshed. New unisom liquid. A stressful day deserves a restful night. Israel sending clear signals today its fighting against hamas are far from over. The latest developments now. The Israeli Military says its calling up to 16,000 more reservists bringing the total since the war started to 86,000. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vows to destroy hamass tunnel system with or without a ceasefire. Israel says rockets fired from gaza landed 20 miles inside the israel side of the border setting a car on fire and wounding one man. We just got this video from the scene of the strike. Israeli Police Describe the mans injuries as serious and say he is hospitalized. Inside gaza shells fell next to a United Nations school being used as a council. U. N. Security council meeks described what he calls increasingly dire conditions in the shelters. There is no water for hygiene, very few showers and latrines are totally inadequate. Disease outbreak is beginning with skin infections, scabies and others. There are thousands of pregnant women in our schools, deliveries are precarious. Were sheltering newborn infants in these appalling conditions. Our ability to mitigate this situation is of course heavily restricted by on going hostilities. After the meeting israels u. N. Ambassador outlined what he calls hamass war crimes. Hamas is using its own people as human shields. It hides rockets inside mosques. It sets up command centers in hospitals. It booby traps homes. In one school, one street in gaza out of gaza, out of 28 buildings, 19 were completely boobytrapped and we have found explosives within a baby crib. Cnns karl penhaul live in gaza city. Karl, the israelis appear to be hunkering down for a long fight. I hear theres some activity near you right now. Reporter i was going to say, actions speak way louder than words these days, don. Just as we were coming to air, we looked around blauz bauz through the black of gaza city we heard what sounded like a jet fighter screaming out from the ground. It was, in fact, rockets being launched by the militants heading off to israel. I would guess in the next few moments well get some reports as to where they landed and if they did any damage across here. That really fits in with what the leader of hamas military has been saying now that there is no middle ground. What does he mean by that . He and the political wing of hamas is saying for there to be a ceasefire that will last, israel would have to agree to a series of conditions set by hamas, and that would include lifting what he calls the blockade of gaza. What he means by that is that the borders of gaza would have to be freed up for the movement of people, of goods and services, and that is what hamas is calling for in order for the general Living Standards of ordinary gazan people to improve. It certainly seems like both sides set in for a hard fight. Still, there could be two questions, how long will their weaponry last and secondly, how long before any of the civilian populations on either side of the border tell their politicians and military that enough is enough, don. Karl penhaul in gaza city. Well be getting back to you throughout the day and evening on cnn. Today as Israeli Military operations push forward in gaza, tempers are flaring between israel and the United Nations. The u. N. Is strongly condemning attacks on u. N. Run schools, strikes that left dozens of palestinian children and families searching for shelter dead or severely injured. A spokesman for the u. N. Saying if the humanitarian crisis gets any worse, the Israeli Government will have to step in and take responsibility for those palestinians seeking refuge from the fighting. Meanwhile, many in israel are criticizing the United States, particularly secretary state john kerry. Israeli president shimon peres countered that by saying israels relationship with the president and the secretary is strong. You cannot forget, basically a great friend and a good friend and i trust him. I dont mind criticism from a friend. I hope he doesnt mind the same. Friendship is not just all the time basically i trust him. I think hes an outstanding person. I think he tries to bring an end to all the wars and cakerry is sworn friend of israel. Lets discuss more. Joining me now, former senior white house official Lawrence Haas and senior Political Columnist and editorial director at the National Journal ron fornier. Larry, i want to start with you. You wrote your piece that secretary kerry needs to, quote, come to his senses. What exactly do you mean by that . Well, that was really a play on his comment that both sides in this drama had to come to their senses equally. Basically what i was saying to secretary kerry is no, i dont think so. What secretary kerry needs to understand is that there is a profound difference between a Democratic State that is a strong u. S. Ally in the middle of a very rough region which is being bombarded from the air from rockets as well as underground from tunnels and on the other side a terrorist state that is dedicated to destroying israel and killing jews. It is not the case that both sides equally have to come to their senses. I was chiding the secretary that he needs to come to his senses in understanding the profound differences between the two sides and the situations that they are in and what got us here. Between israel and hamas youre saying. Correct. A vast difference. Ron, you say israel has a right to defend itself against hamas, against hamas rockets but israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be worried. Why should he be worried . That was a cwonderful commen. No difference between a jewish hating terrorist organization and a democratic country fighting for its survival. Like the United States and john kerry, the israelis have to deal with the world that they have, not the world they wish it might be. They have to realize that a lot has changed as larry pointed out in his fine column even since 2012, since the last ceasefire agreement. The alliances have shifted in the region. Media is even mortem october tiesed. Its easier to see whats happening in gaza, easier for hamas and the palestinians to get their message, get their images out. Thats affecting public perception, not just the United States but around the world. Those things are creating a subtle shift in the narrative. A little bit less away from the real world, real concerns about israels security and the consequences of israelis actions. I would like to know, i wonder what richard thinks that israel could have done to prevent it from getting into this point, where we have this kind of violence going on, this kind of war and how in the future both israel and the United States can act differently so we dont get to this point where israel is in a bad pr position. Im sure he appreciates the compliment, but its larry were talking to. Oh, im sorry. I want to ask you, youre talking about theres no moral equivalency. Obviously we know that hamas is a terrorist organization and no equivalency to israel. But might the secretary of state be taking the Palestinian People as a whole into account when he talks about this and not just hamas . No, no, no. Look, no one can look at the situation and not feel great empathy for the Palestinian People. But please, lets understand what got us in the situation were in. We basically have a terrorist Organization Running the gaza strip that is targeted literally both innocent israelis as well as innocent palestinians. The Palestinian People are being exploited, most of all, by hamas, not by israel. After all, it is hamas that is using them as human shields for the explicit purpose of creating the very images that ron fornier is talking about. I take his point that this is a pr problem for israel as these images come ut out. I will say this, israel has always had pr problems. I dont see how the government of israel can be doing anything other than what its doing, and the israeli people are strongly behind it as well as so is the u. S. Congress. Israel still has friends. Everyone ive spoken to is that israel always loses the pr war, if you want to call it that, in these situations. We havent seen many areas of criticize hamas out right. Is this an important part of peace negotiations were missing. I think its an important part of the Peace Process that israel missed earlier on and maybe could have helped avoid this kind of situation. Certainly what kerry, as was pointed out in the column, what kerry missed here. You dont want to be turning your back on egypt and the palestinians and walking towards qatar and turkey which is what kerry did. We have to deal with the situation on the ground now, not what we wish it was. Ron fornier and larry haas, appreciate you joining us on a thursday afternoon. Just ahead, the cia apologizing for spying on senator. Hear what happened. Jake tapper joins me next. In the nation, the safest feature in your car is you. Add vanishing deductible from nationwide insurance and get 100 off for every year of safe driving. We put members first, join the nation. Nationwide is on your side. Welcome back. Im don lemon, a potential bombshell from the head of the cia to the Senate Intelligence committee for peeking into their computers and spying on investigators looking into c afrnlthsa practices. Jake, the cia issued a statement a short time ago. What are they admitting to . To having told false statements before, specifically this question about the investigation by the senate into Interrogation Practices that the larger community, and according to the geneva conventions are torture. The question, of course s what the Senate Intelligence Committee Staffers were doing and whether or not the cia was snooping on them in any way. It turns out that despite protests by the cia that they had not been snooping on what the Senate Intelligence Committee Staffers were doing. They were. The statement comes forward and says cia director brennan was briefed on the office of Inspector General findings which include a judgment that some cia employees acted in matter inconsistent with what was reached by the Senate Intelligence committee and cia regarding access to the specific computer. The director of the cia subsequently informed the Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman and apologized to them for such actions by cia officers as described in the Inspector General report. Keep in mind this all started back in march, don, when dianne feinstein, the chair of the Senate Intelligence committee went to the floor of the senate. Shes usually a pretty big defender of americas intelligence committee. She was very angry, talking about how there had been snooping on her own staffers. This is what brennan, the director of the cia said in march when asked about that. Take a listen. As far as the allegations of cia hacking into senate computers, nothing could be further from the truth. We wouldnt do that. Thats just beyond the scope of reason. She says there are potentially illegal don, whats key there is nobody is saying these were senate computers. These were cia computers, set up specially. Hes being a little cute by half there. We have democrats on the committee very, very alarmed. We have mark udall, member of the senate, saying he lost confidence in brennan, concerned about his inability to find any flaws in the agency he leads. Senator ron widen demanding a full accounting, he says out right brennan made claims that were simply not true. Theres going to be a big briefing on this at 3 00 for the members of the Senate Intelligence committee. Well see if anymore shoes are going to drop after that. Just in time for you to follow up on it at 4 00 eastern. Thanks, jake tapper, host of the lead. See you at 4 00. An American College dropout turned jihadist. This 22yearold from florida died in syria, a suicide bomber. Cnns jim sciutto reports of a video that just came up online. It shows an angry rant and threat to the u. S. Reporter it is a chilling warning from a terrorist born and raised in america. We are coming for you. Mark my words. Reporter in this video posted online this week an american jihadist destroys his passport and warns his home country is not safe from attack. Im from america, 22 years old. Reporter he is a College Dropout from florida who traveled to syria to join extremists in the fight against the regime of syrian president bashar al assad. Then this may he died a suicide bomber, detonating a bombladened truck. More than three years into a civil war in syria that has killed tens of thousand and now spilled into neighboring iraq, thousands of foreign fighters drawn into the battle, among them an estimated 1,000 westerners, including more than 100 americans. U. S. And european officials are gravely concerned about what can happen next. Intelligence has found these fighters are being trained to carry out attacks when they return home, including to america. The number of foreign fighters that are already in place in syria and the number of westerners in that group is one thats unprecedented and i think is a larger number than we ever saw in the ungoverned spaces of pakistan and afghanistan region. Deep fears about u. S. And other western recruits like abu sa led officials to call the wars in syria and iraq a direct threat to the u. S. Homeland. Its now a race against time to track them and catch them before they can strike. Jim sciutto, cnn, washington. All right, jim, thank you very much. A short time ago the cdc issued a travel warning for three african countries hit by the Ebola Outbreak. Health officials believe the deadly outbreak has killed more than 700 in liberia, sierra leone and ginuinea. Theres no cure or vaccine. The cdc director said today its not going to be quick and not going to be easy. But they know what to do to fight this disease. Part of that is sending 50 more Health Workers to west africa to help out. They Just Announced that plan, all to keep that th virus from spreading to other countries. Thats assuming those infected want treatment. One doctor told the telegraph that some infected people refuse medical treatment because they believe it is witchcraft. I want to bring in barry, he and his wife authors of ebola and politics, the anthropology of an emerging disease. He joins us from oregon. Mr. Hewlett, help us understand the culture of believing the virus is witchcraft. Do you believe its hindering the efforts to fight the disease . Well, i mean a belief in sorcery witchcraft can contribute to certain behaviors. Generally with sorcery and witchcraft theres a belief it cannot be transmitted by touch so that can be problematic. This is not basically all the Ebola Outbreaks that ive been familiar with, they generally start out with witchcraft kinds of accusations. But people have ways to distinguish local people have ways to distinguish witchcraft from epidemic types of diseases in their indigenous system. In your book, you get into the Cultural Practice of local people. Could it be helpful in control procedures . Absolutely. In terms of generally the people in these areas have been living with these deadly diseases for a long period of time and so they generally have developed some knowledge about how to control them, and in my experience they have sort of indigenous systems to do that. Often they selfquarantine their own villages. They monitor the people who do have the illness in their own villages. These come from reports from the very early Ebola Outbreaks back in the 1970s, 1980s. Are you worried about the virus hitting the u. S. . I mean, obviously at some time lit come to the u. S. It is relatively easy to control with isolation. So in terms of somebody traveling to the u. S. , yes, it wouldnt be unusual, but its not that difficult to control. Barry hewlett, appreciate your time. Thank you very much. Up next, as israel calls up 16,000 more reservists, well speak live with one american getting ready to join the Israel Defense forces. Israels Prime Minister says this is just the first phase of israels effort to demille tir rise gaza. While 750 americans are believed to be serving in the israel military. Atan moved from the United States to israel in may. What made you decide to join the military Defense Forces . I have a lot of family here in israel. Thats been very important to me, as well as the fact that ive been coming here for most of my life in the summers. I really want to help build the israelu. S. Relationship and strengthen it. You sent us video that you shot with your cell phone in early july of israels iron dome intercepting rockets over tel aviv. Whats it like when the rockets and sirens are all going off . Its a rush that you can never imagine. Its terrifying. You know somebody is actively trying to kill you, shooting a missile at you to try to kill you. Thankfully whenever we hear the iron dome, we know that not only the United States is behind us but this particular incident is behind us and we know that were safe. Its provided a lot of mental comfort to us here in israel having the iron dome Missile Defense system. Lets talk about the people in gaza. Civilians are believed to be the most killed in gaza. You sent pictures of your volunteer work with children in a bomb shelter. How do you feel about joining the israeli army knowing that many children are among the casualties . I do know that many children are among the casualties and this is extraordinarily regrettable. I do know i am going into the most moral army in the world. These children that have been killed are not being killed on purpose. We are not actively trying to kill them. These are children that are being basically held hostage by hamas. Hamas is shooting rockets from young schools, u. N. Safe places are very close by, drawing fire from israeli forces. Every single civilian life lost in gaza is extraordinarily regrettable. The fact of the matter is hamas is putting their own people into harms way. This is something we just cant take. You said since youve been there, youve seen a marked difference in tourism and people out and about at your own hotel, on the beaches. Talk about that. Sure. So, for instance, the beaches are jenny a lot more empty than they were before the war began. People are canceling in hotels left and right. The Economic Situation is really starting to slow down. You said your hotel had 95 capacity and now is down to about 15 . That shows that people are really concerned about this. Atan goldstein thank you very much, joining us from tel aviv. Next, ill talk to a palestinian american comedian who makes jokes about his background. This time the conflict in the middle east has hit very close to him. One of his young cousins beaten, another killed. Has this changed his perspective on the situation and tempered his comedy . Well ask him next. I know. And thank you so much for that. We are focused on the increase sing bloody conflict. Three israeli teenagers were kidnapped and murdered. They bodies were found in the west bank about a month ago. Days later a 16yearold palestinian was burned alive. The possible revenge killing sparked huge protest. Then a suchlt s. Citizen visiting jerusalem was beaten by Israeli Police near a protest. It so happens a comedian related to both cousins lives right here in the United States. Aaron cater makes a living by telling jokes on touchy topics. How are you doing, first of all . Hey, don, thanks for having me on. It was such a touchy situation. When i got the news i got a text message basically that said, a friend of mine said i heard about this kid who was murdered. What a shame. I assume hes your cousin. As soon as i saw the name, i knew he was my cousin. Family started talking. Everybody was outraged and depressed. Its been really sad the last few weeks. As everybody is talking about it and discussing it amongst their family, its just been really, really difficult to pull our attention away from the entire situation. Obviously my family is sort of thrust in the center of the conflict here this time. Obviously. Lets talk about your comedy. How do you balance trying to make people laugh . Thats what you do for a living, you have to continue doing what youre doing. How do you balance that while trying to make a point . You know, its always been part of my comedy, always been something ive done. One of my jokes thats true is its just politically incorrect to be palestinian. It always has been. If im in a public situation and mention that im pill stannian, theres not a lot of follow up questions. Its okay to be italian, irish, a lot of things. When you say youre palestinian, its almost like it offends people. Thats always been part of my why do you say that . My humor. People just dont know what to say to that. Its like they cant relate or they just go, oh, well, thats a tough situation. Its touchy just to be a palestinian, and to this conflict, nobody chooses to be born jewish or palestinian. Nobody chooses to be born with enemies. Israelis and palestinian babies are born with enemies. Thats not right. I grew up with jewish friends, and all my jewish friends, thaus are talking about it, were sensitive to it. We noi know how to discuss it without yelling and being ray shows and vicious. I feel through comedy theres a way to start the discussion and let everybody know that theres compassion, we should see each other as humans. Heres the thing. Theres a saying that comedians create laughter through pain and sometimes ignorance. You make people laugh and you can make people learn. Are you still telling the same jokes about the middle east as you did before this tragedy, especially your cousins tragedy . Interestingly enough, because this seems to be every two to four years theres this menstruation of blood, this violence. It actually resurrects old jokes. I have old jokes from 14 years ago that are still current, and thats sad. Thats sad that i could take an old joke and it can be as current as it is today, meaning the conflict hasnt changed. It hasnt progressed. We could be celebrating the 21st year of the oslo peace accords right now, but instead weve gone backwards. This conflict really has not helped the conversation. If you go on, obviously, facebook and twitter, its more racist, more extreme. People are more upset. So i just dont see how if violence was going to solve this problem, it would have been solved a long time ago, clearly, right . This is just making things worse in my opinion. That is a very good point that you just said as a comedian. If violence was going to solve this problem, it would have solved it a long time ago. Thanks for having me on.
