Where a team of technicians to greet him. Incredibly somber and sad to see. Really what seemed like all of hilversum came out to pay their respects. Speaking to people in the crowds, they were telling me they feel its their National Duty to be here. To grieve and mourn. Also here, the family of quinn schansman. He was the only american on board mh17. He had dual dutch and american nationality. His father was here, his family was here. And they simply held each other as the caskets went through those gates, not knowing if quinn was inside one of them. It was incredibly touching to see. This hilversum is very much a Community Mourning this loss, this tragedy, particularly painful for them. They lost three families to this tragedy, plus quinn. I was outside the home of one family earlier this morning, and to see it stand empty with flowers on the doorstep, that family never to return. Really, thats when it really hit me that the depth and get scale of this tragedy. And nearby soccer club, one of the little boys who was on board mh17, his best friend left a note saying youll be in our hearts forever. And i was speaking to a local pastor, and he was telling me how people here are confused, and angry. Theyre shocked. But mostly theres just a sense of deep sadness at this loss. He said our hearts are crying. And theyre crying here in the netherlands, theyre crying here in hilversum. And as you can see, this outpouring of grief, just so much sadness here today, anderson. And i should point out, talking about quinn schansman, i talked to his grandfather the other day, quinn was born in the United States. As you said, he had dual citizenship. He was an avid rugby player, student of the International Business school in amsterdam, going to indonesian to vacation with his family. His grandfather worked in hotels his whole life. Quinn talked about perhaps working in hotels himself. Just one of the victims on board this flight. And imagine for the families standing there, watching each hears passing by, wondering, is my son in that hesres, is that my father, is that my mother. Questions that countless families will be asking in the case ahead as more and more of the victims begin the journey. This long, torturous difficult journey home. Its been an honor to be here over the last two hours with Richard Quest bringing witnessing bearing witness to the return of this, the extraordinary way that the dutch have brought these people. Begin to bring them home. I want to toss over our coverage now to brooke baldwin, standing by. Ill be back tonight from 8 00 to 10 00 with more of what we have witnessed today, an extraordinary day. And if you missed it, well have a completely wrapup tonight at 8 00. Brooke baldwin continues our coverage now. Thank you so much to anderson and Richard Quest, a phenomenal job in the way you have been reporting this incredibly somber day, with heavy hearts, the world with heavy hearts, as we have been watching the victims. 40 caskets, 40 separate hearses, being taken from one location to this one next location within the netherlands. And all the while, ive been watching along with you. As a viewer for hours. Tough to have dry eyes, watching dutch lining the highways, lining the overpasses. Lining the streets within hilversum, where all of these bodies are now and will be processed, will be identified. And seeing children covering their eyes, throwing flowers on the hearses. Just contrasting what were seeing today. Its beautiful. Versus what we saw over the last couple of days, where the plane went down in Eastern Ukraine. Youve been watching with us. Look at this. This journey from this morning when these bodies arrived. And it was the first time we saw the bodies finally inside of coffins. And the ceremony this morning, the dignity, the single bugle, the taps played. In case you missed it, take a look. [ taps [ b and the nation and really the world has been watching as these 40 hearses traveled not to the final resting place, but on to this forensic lab, this medical center. Thousands of dutch you see here on this one overpass lined the journey on to this facility through the day today. And the bodies just reached that destination minutes ago. Medical examiners now must identify and examine all these bodies, which is expected to take months and months. Thousands of the dutch line the journey there. Hundreds more attended a Church Service to honor those lives lost. I would like to bring in a journalist on dutch tv for a program called news hour and he joins me where all those hearses were traveling to hilversum in the netherlands. First, if i may, i am so sorry for the loss of so many from your country, and if i may just say thank you. I mean, it has been absolutely beautiful watching this outpouring of support. And i have to ask, was all of this that we have been watching today spontaneous . Reporter pretty much. I think yesterday evening the government of the netherlands came with a declaration stating that today will be a national day of mourning. Obviously, we didnt know until yesterday that the coffins would come in today. And everything you saw today has basically been set up overnight. It has been aired on dutch tv the entire day on several channels. And yeah, everything you saw, the people on the overpasses, bridges, people on the roads, that was all spontaneous. And the most impressive thing for me, at least, was the silence. This is not a country known to be silent. People have opinions and speak out. And today everybody was quiet. And that left quite an impression. You were there youre talking, i imagine, as a journalist, to just different people who chose on their own to come and whether its be silent or pay their respects, place flowers down, can you just share a few stories of why they wanted to be there . Reporter well, there are several stories. First of all, it has been mentioned before that everybody either knew somebody on the plane, not literally, but you always know somebody who knew somebody on the plane. And thats the same for me. A guy in my parents house left lost a family member. Right next door here is camping, its summer, people are camping and came here to pay their respect. This town, hilversum, they lost people, as well. Its the same everywhere. People who knew people who came out here to place flowers. Its also people who just have been witnessing this on television unfold for about a week, who came here to pay their respects. Is its really a bunch its really everybody who came out today, and you saw that from the moments the plane arrived in eindhoven up until now when here in hilversum. And there are 248, if im correct, more coffins coming over the next few days. In this was only unfortunately the beginning. 298 victims in total. 200 dutch nationals. So basically twothirds of the victims republicon the plane fr country. Can you tell me a little bit more about the process . I presume with each of the coffins in each of these hearses, 40 in total, when will the next few flights be arriving . Do we know yet . Reporter yes, we do. What we saw today, the planes arriving around in the middle of the afternoon. The same exact same procedure will happen tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow. Im not sure if that means that the day after tomorrow all the coffins are in. Maybe so. That will mean they have to have several flights a day. But that will be the same procedure. So in a couple of days, all the coffins are here. As you said, dutch nationals about 200. 100 other victims from other countries, malaysia, australia and others, they will all be here. And the Prime Minister of the netherlands said it would take not days but weeks, and maybe even months until everybody will have been identified. So it will be a long process. With these first 40 victims arriving where you are in hilversum, there is a medical facility, a Forensics Lab that is receiving them, presumably as we speak to begin the arduous and difficult process of identifying these bodies. Do we know how long you said, of course, this will take months and months. But once they are identified, presumably, if theyre not from the netherlands, they then move on and are flown to that final destination. Reporter probably. I mean, certainly. Im not sure when that will happen. Today when the plane arrives in eindhoven in the south, there were several ambassadors and undersecretaries from other countries there present. They will obviously have people on the ground over the next few weeks and months just to make sure their nationals are being taken care. And then there are still bodies in ukraine. I mean, even on the site, if im correct, or at least not everybody is yet on the airport in ukraine waiting to be flown out. So it will be an extremely long process. The and yes, 200 dutch have been killed. I think about 20 australians and malaysians, other european countries, one dutchamerican national. So is all these nationalities will be represented here and im sure theyll have ambassadors, diplomats and other people helping with the identification. Our hearts are with you and your country, and i so many around the world. Just absolutely gripping, beautiful ceremonies. And spontaneous, as you point out, of all these different men, women, children in your country today. Church services along the highway, i thank you so much for joining me. And, again, im so sorry for the loss of so many in your country. All the while, breaking today, ukraine says prorussian rebels have shot down two fighter jets six days after flight 17 went down. As people in the netherlands and really all around the world mourn, back in Eastern Ukraine, the war wages on. Not far from the wreckage of mh17, ukraine says two of its jets have just been shot down. And we have video. Here it is. Which purports to show the shooting, clearly the smoke plumes thereafter. Ukrainian officials blame pro russian rebels and an aide to a key rebel leader says rebel fighters brought down the jets using a shoulderfired Missile System. Joining me now, colonel rick francona. Welcome back. First, Ukrainian Defense spokesperson says that preliminary information suggests that those missiles were fired from just inside of russia. That would be incredibly brazen. It would be also difficult to hit these aircraft from that far away with a shoulderfired missile. They also said they were flying at around 17,000 feet, which really puts them out of the range of the shoulderfired stuff. I would think that we may be looking at yet another instance of the use of the sa11. Okay. Which would have been used to take down Malaysian Air 17, though theyre looking to confirm that. We also have i guess this sort of raises two possibilities here, this reporting. One, that Vladimir Putin has lost control over these pro russian rebels. Or two, you can think of it as if these rebels are, in fact, russiantrained, russianbacked, does this mean that russia is refusing to back down . I dont think theres any question the russians are not going to back down. They have a stake in this. Putin has not given up his dreams of owning the Eastern Ukraine again. What youre seeing here on the military side, these people have these weapons, and unless someone tells them to stand down and not use them, theyre going to continue to fight. The ukrainians are attacking. Those two were attacking ukrainian pro russian separatist positions. They have the weapons, theyre going to fire at them. They shot down a civilian jet and killed 298 people. If it was from this, you know, surfacetoair missile. I just days later. Its beyond comprehension almost. But these people are committed to their cause, and theyre going to continue. Its almost like this was an aberration. Thats in the past. We dont want to deal with this anymore. Were going to continue on our stated goals, and thats to be independent of the ukrainian government. As for the downing of mh17, reporting from our correspondent at the pentagon, Barbara Starr reporting that u. S. Intelligence, there is still no direct link between the russians we should be clear, between the russians and the actual shooting taking down of this plane. But knowing what you know about this Missile System, colonel, the buk Missile System, would the russians likely have had to provide training . Pretty sophisticated to use one of these things. Absolutely. It takes a u. S. Soldier about 26 weeks, 6 months, to learn how to use one of these sophisticated Missile Systems. Likewise, with the russian system. Someone had to train these people. And the only people that points fingers to would be the russians. We know there is a Training Facility right inside russian territory. We suspect thats where this might have happened. But now were looking at six months of training. I dont think weve had six months of lead time yet. So this looks like there may have been russian advisers. That raises a whole different thing. I do want the to say, though, we do have access to the black boxes, we have access to the scene now. But no matter what happens, all that forensic evidence, none of that is going to tell us who was sitting in that track vehicle and pushed that button. Thats the big unknown. And we may never know without good intelligence. Colonel rick francona, thank you so much. Sure. Breaking news out of israel. We are getting word sirens are going off near the airport in tel aviv. Just gotten word sirens are sounding yet again over the skies of tel aviv. Keep in mind, tel aviv, home to ben gurion airport. We can report that airlines originating in the United States cannot fly into there, at least for one more day. Federal aviation officials just extended the ban on flights to and from israels main airport, ben gurion, for at least another 24 hours in response to rocketfire tuesday from gaza that hit all of a mile away from the runway at ben gurion airport. Lets begin atika, tell me about the sirens going off. Reporter yeah, about 15 minutes ago, i heard sirens really probably more in tel aviv, just south of the airport. But just a few seconds later, we could see a rocket interception over the city there. And this, of course, is iron dome, israels anti Missile System at work, intercepting that rocket. This is a pretty common occurrence here, and people hear these kinds of sirens all of the time, and in an orderly way go to the nearest shelter or sheltered area when it happens. But it is exactly these rockets which have the faa so concerned. Because they dont know when one of these are coming. You only have a few seconds to react. And frankly, theyre not very accurate so youre not sure where you can really go. And the concern is even though the odds of one of these rockets hitting a plane is very, very small, its enough of a concern for the faa to say, lets extend this ban for another 24 hours and see how the situation goes. I know you and your crew are accustomed to those rockets being intercepted, but for our u. S. Viewers, remind us what that looks like overhead. What that sounds like. Reporter well, really, the first thing youre going to hear is the sirens and then a call. Usually over a speaker system saying red alert. Then you have somewhere between 7 to 15 seconds before you hear a boom. And if you can look up into the sky, youll see what looks like maybe a small fire work and thats iron dome interaccepting that rocket. Quite often, these rockets fall into open areas, but they do sometimes fall into populated areas. And they destroyed a house just about a mile away from here. And they have actually fallen in areas and killed people. In fact, just this morning, we heard the sirens go off near the border and killed a farm worker there in the field. So these rockets, while rarely hurt people, can be very dangerous. And that is the big concern for many people here, not just the faa. Again, the reporting we have, though, u. S. Flights will not be flying into or out of ben gurion airport, faa extending the ban for another 24 hours. Yet former new york mayor, Michael Bloomberg did hop a flight that is allowed into israel. Well be hearing from him later in the show. Atika shubert, thank you so much. Next, as the world is on high alert when it comes to air travel, because of all these stories, one expert says planes are becoming more and more vulnerable during takeoffs and landings, and there are fears that terror groups may now be motivated to target planes from the ground. Surfacetoair missiles suspected of taking down that malaysian plane arent the only threat that have aviation officials worried. Shoulderfired rockets a threat. Man pads like this one can reach up to two, three miles up in the sky. So could it take down a plane in those few minutes during takeoff or landing . Let me bring in cnn Global Affairs analyst, kimberly dozer, to talk with b that. Kim, first, this is something ive talked to multiple experts about, and i would just love your opinion. If now that terrorist groups see yes indeed its possible for a commercial airliner flying at 32, 33,000 feet can be taken down from a surfacetoair missile, they could do this as well. This has always been a concern for Counter Terrorist officials and home land Security Officials here. Terrorist groups have aimed at commercial passenger jets since the 1970s, when the Popular Liberation front of palestine hijacked an air france jet. So either hijacking them, blowing them out of the sky, has always been something they have sought to get massive headlines. So this will serve as just a reminder for those groups to step up their efforts to get access to these kind of systems. Now whats different in this situation with the malaysian jet is that the sa11 is a very technically difficult system to run. It takes a lot of training. It also takes military intelligence to aim that fire and figure out what youre aiming at. Terrorist groups must also be watching the fact that the separatists on the ground, if they did in the end be proven as the ones who fired a missile, they didnt intend to hit a commercial airliner, and this is blowing back on them. So in this situation, terrorist groups probably do want to get aled who of Something Like that. But then theyve got to think about what are they aiming at. Right. And to your point, sophisticati sophistication, it takes months and months of training to use one of these thingses. But back to your point, kim, about planes. Planes as targets. We have been seeing the reports these bombmakers have been trying to up their ante, be more creative, get make undetectable materials. And you go back decades, but even just its been 13 years since 9 11, and airplanes seem to still be prime targets for terrorists. Why is that . Absolutely. Al qaeda, the arabian peninsula, thats the branch in yemen, has been trying to perfect a new underwear bomb made out of a pretty undetectable explosive. We have also seen the department of Homeland Security change security procedures for people flying to the u. S. Now you cant fly from some airports with an Electronic Device unless youve turned that device on. So they have been probably been tipped off someone is trying to fit something into one of those devices. Yes, it remains a draw. Look at the headlines. What a terrorist group wants to draw followers and to draw funding is to get its ideology out there. Its in a sense, a nightmarish popularity contest. And taking out a plane is one of the best ways to expand their influence. The bomb maker, weve been reading about trying to beat the system. Kim dozier, thank you so much. Welcome to cnn, by the way. Great to be here. From israel to ukraine, which hot spots, which conflict zones are safe for your plane to fly over . Well show you. Plus, this. Peter, calm down. Take a breath. So to the pentagon we go to Barbara Starr. Barbara, what are you hearing . Brooke, you can only imagine that u. S. Intelligence is watching that border by the minute. And the picture is not looking good, according to several sources we have spoken to. What they are noticing, we are told, by u. S. Officials, is the russians, theres about 12 to 15,000 Russian Troops on that southeastern border you see. Several of them now breaking up into smaller groups and moving right to the border, less than five miles, some of them. Some of them sitting literally right on the border with Eastern Ukraine, right up against that rebelcontrolled territory. Why might the russians be doing this . The u. S. Believes at the moment they might be doing it because they want to be able to fire from inside russia on that side of the border, whether its Russian Troops or rebels, coming back across the border. They fire from the russian side, they have plausible deniability, they say it wasnt them. They believe nobody can prove it. They can claim it was the ukrainians firing. So this is quite concerning right now, because at the same time, what the u. S. Also sees is russia continuing to ship heavy weapons into the rebelcontrolled area. They believe the world is watching only the mh17 disaster situation, the crime scene that that has become and is not paying attention. Thats the assessment by u. S. Officials. And so they are taking this opportunity to ship everything they can into ukraine, into the rebelcontrolled territory. This is something u. S. Intelligence is continuing to watch by the minute. They say its a changing picture. Brooke . Okay. And barbara, i know it was your reporting with regard to two military jets shot down. Two came from those shoulder missiles from inside russia, correct . Well, not entirely clear yet. To be specific, brooke. The u. S. Intelligence community actually looking at that very possibility. What shot those two su25s down, we have seen the pictures of the flaming debris. There seems to be no question that two ukrainian su25 jets were shot down. Is it possible that they that fire came indeed from across the border in russia . Thats what theyre looking at right now. Okay. Barbara starr, appreciate the reporting out of the pentagon for us. And not knowing for certain who is behind the tragedy of Malaysian Air flight 17, conspiracy theories abound. We know that many, including the United States, believe prorussian rebels most likely shot that jetliner, took it down with arms supplied by the kremlin. But Russian Media has, of course, its own set of theories, including ukrainians did it in a botched attempt to assassinate Vladimir Putin or that ukraine orchestrated this whole thing to make it look like a rebel attack. Well this morning, cnn new day anchor chris cuomo interviewed a news anchor today, and the conversation began with putins role in the crash investigation, but quickly turned into a very emotional exchange. Watch. I want to ask you, why hasnt russia, specifically Vladimir Putin, why hasnt he come out and strictly and in a straightway condemned how the crime scene was handled . How the dignity of the dead was abused . How crime scene investigators werent let in . Why hasnt russia . Why hasnt Vladimir Putin come forward and condemned how this crime scene has been handled . Well, i think the answer to that is a very, very straight forward and simple. Ukraine is not in russia. Vladimir putin doesnt control a crime scene in a foreign country. I think its quite ludicrous for you to ask that question. He has come out and demanded a complete investigation. As a matter of fact, on monday of this week, russia gave its assessment of the reconnaissance and surveillance of satellites, and what was happening in the crime scene. We dont have that coming out of washington. So i think thats what you should be asking is that, why is the state department relying upon twitter and youtube and other social media for its case when russia has already given its or at least part of the forensic evidence that is necessary to solve this horrific crime . Maybe you havent been following it, but the u. S. Is actually coming out with a lot of its own intelligence that connects what happened to mh17 to the acts of russian militants and perhaps involvement of russia in either training, eequipping or assisting. What forensic evidence are you talking about . What forensic evidence are you referring to . Twitter . They are releasing intelligence information about no, not twitter. I do not think, peter, this is something to be flip about. 298 people lost their lives. Lets not i think the u. S. State department has been very flippant about this. Very flippant about it. Wheres the evidence . Thats what we need to solve this crime. Its not coming out of washington. Intelligence officials are saying they dont know who did this. They dont know where it came from. The United States spends 100 billion a year on Global Intelligence and they cant find out . This is extraordinary. There are nato ships in the black sea watching ukraine like a hawk. Where is their data . Please show us the data. Then we can move forward. And maybe this can help resolve the crisis in ukraine. All right, peter. Take a breath. Okay . Because this isnt a debate. Its easy to bandy about points and confuse facts. Theres no need for that. Because im not here to debate with you who did this. Okay . I really wish you would stick with facts. I asked a simple question. Everything im saying to you, there is u. S. Intelligence peter, why are you afraid to hear what im saying . Im not here to fight with you, okay . Im not i would like you i would like you to ask the u. S. Government to release all of its data from satellites and compare it to the rest were doing exactly that. See where they match, where they dont match. Peter youre living in a parallel universe. Peter. Peter. Calm down. Take a breath. Weve already had something bad happen. Theres no reason to ask me an intelligent question. You are speaking ask an intelligent question. Well, i think ive asked several. Your answers, i dont know about the intelligence. But the questions are pretty spoton. Let me ask you again, because im not a representative of the u. S. You seem to be acting like a representative of russia. And what i ask you is why hasnt russia assassination five minutes. Thats what you did. France has done it. The uk has done it. The u. S. Has done it. None of them have sovereign control over ukraine. Countless countries have come forward. The u. N. Has come forward and condemned what was done at this crime scene. But not russia. And Vladimir Putin has come out with a thorough investigation. Okay. Cuomo did apologize after that fiery exchange, and he reminded the viewers that the focus should remain on the victims. Coming up next, sirens are sounding at israels main airport, and the u. S. Extends its travel ban there by at least 24 hours. It got us wondering, which hot spots, which war zones in the world are safe for your plane to fly over . Can you find out before you board . Nothing going through anywhere year the shores of north korea and smoelia, as well. You have to be too high, above 32,000, whatever. We just talked about iraq, faa saying nope, were not doing that. Look at all the other airlines, arab emirates, many take that through the persian gulf. And ill make your head spin and show you every place there might be an air show. A military exercise. Whatever it might be that the airmen need to know about on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. This goes on and on, changes daily, weekly. Obviously, some of the danger zones do not. Richard quest, i was talking to les abend, and he said absolutely this is a gamechanger. Do you agree . Going forward, do you think planes will be forced to fuel up a bit more, longer flights, flying around additional conflict zones . Or no . I think its a gamechanger. Thats not my view. Its the view of sir tim clark, who is the chief executive of emirates, one of the Worlds Largest airlines by number of seats and routes and miles they fly.
