The senate. She has chosen not to do that. President trump has expressed his desire to have an extended senate trial with witnesses. Thats reportedly not the vision of the top senate republican, majority leader Mitch Mcconnell, but the president said this week hed go along with whatever senator mcconnell decides. So the status of this extraordinary moment in American History is definitely in limbo and likely to stay that way until everyone comes to work in january. Until then two main impeachment players are squaring off at the top of this historic fight. And as tom forman reports, benea neither is the president. She is the master of the house, hes the ruler of the senate. Speaker of the house continues to hem and haw. Reporter together Mitch Mcconnell and nancy pelosi are in the heavy weight political fight of their lives with Donald Trumps raging fate at state. Americans will show up by the tens of millions next year to vote pelosi the hell out of office. Reporter for months pelosi has been whipping democrats into shape for impeachment, at times urging caution, at times confronting trump himself. All roads lead to putin. Reporter no one gets under his skin more i still pray for the president. Reporter trump hitting back. You know this is not true unless it is meant in a negative sense. Reporter mcconnell, a dauntless trump defender dismissing all evidence of wrong doing, in a body blow aimed at the democrats promising more of the same when the trial begins. This is a political process. Reporter pelosi holding up the articles of impeachment. They suspected there could be a rogue president. I dont think they suspected that we could have a rogue president and a rogue leader in the senate at the same time. Reporter mcconnell, even with the president demanding quick action insisting her tactics be dont bother him. Im not sure what leverage there is in refraining from sending us something we dont want. Reporter all the feigns and dodges make it unclear which is winning. All is almost certain that donald trump will be acquitted when the fight removes to Mitch Mcconnells republican led senate. But for now mcconnell and pelosi are largely keeping their parties in line, landing the big punches and the championship rounds are still ahead. Well see what they have and well be ready for whatever it is. Reporter to be sure both could come out winners the wall street journal said earlier nancy pelosi was given a standing ovation for the way she was handling the process. And Mitch Mcconnell could get something he wants too before its all over, a pat on the back by donald trump. Tom forman, cnn washington. Matt lewis senior columnist from the daily beast is with us. As well as pete dominic, talk show host. This isnt going to be some sweaty steel cage death match. Were talking three dimensional chess on an iceberg. Who comes out on top . Thats a great question, who comes out on top. Well spend the next couple of weeks in limbo, the holidays and new years. The question is does it hurt the democrats . It doesnt seem like anything is hurting Mitch Mcconnell in the United States senate. Theres a lot that remains to be seen. And one question might be, ana, what might come out in terms of trump and ukraine between now and the first. Thats what people are whispering in National Security circles. Also, what happens if maybe somebody finds a backbone, were not going to find our breath over it, but in the United States senate, maybe a few republicans are going to find their conscious, highly doubtful but theres a lot that remains to be seen. The question, nancy pelosi versus Mitch Mcconnell, who wins, do you agree with what we heard from pete . Its hard to say. I think both of these are great political operators. Put aside whos right, whos wrong, put aside ideology. They are good at what they do. Nancy pelosi is very sharp, smart, strategic, so is Mitch Mcconnell. I think there was an argument for nancy pelosi to slow down impeachment in the house. You could have potentially tried to compel other witnesses, bolton, mulvaney to testify. Now pelosi is hoping to have that happen in the senate but she has no leverage in the senate, thats Mitch Mcconnells domain, and i dont think shes going to have the leverage to make that happen. So i think advantage Mitch Mcconnell, at least for now. I do wonder, though, if Nancy Pelosis leverage could be knowing the president wants vindication, he wants to be acquitted, he wants to be able to say i was exonerated, you know, after impeachment and if holding the articles shes betting on the president implying and creating pressure on Mitch Mcconnell to make some kind of deal so they can get on with it, so he can be acquitted, what do you think . I think there is truth to that. Mitch mcconnell had that line, that very mcconnellesque line, i dont know how much leverage there is sending us something we dont want in the first place. But donald trump wants it. Donald trump is the leverage. That is maybe the one thing. I will say this, if republicans, if john mccain were still alive, if jeff flake hadnt left. If there were enough republicans still in the senate like mitt romney that she could try to cut a deal with, that would be the other option, i dont think that exists anymore either. Speaking of former senator jeff flake, he is urging his former gop colleagues to stake a stand, he wrote this, it might not be fair but none of the successes, achievements and try yums you had in the senate, whatever bills youve passed, hearings youve chaired, consisten consisten constituents you have had the privilege of helping, but in a very real sense, so are you. And so is the political party. Im upset with his lack of courage. He spoke out in the senate. He spoke out and voted for every policy, the racist pos policies of the president , voted for brett kavanaugh. He didnt run for reelection knowing he wouldnt win his primary. I can come on your show and say something, there wouldnt be any consequences. But he voted for all those policies, for brett kavanaugh. Twitter is having a field day with this jeff flake oped. I cant give him any credit. I dont see any current republican senator feeling pressure from someone whos no longer in the senate and when he had the possibility voted with all of trumps policies. You dont think this is going to connect with republicans in the senate . I tend to agree i like the conservative policies but i tend to agree. Justin amash is the hero here, somebody who left the party but hes going down fighting. He didnt walk away because he was afraid he couldnt get reelected. I can write an oped, theres opinion leaders and other conservatives who can opine and urge republicans to do the right thing, as hopeless as that may be. If jeff flake were still in the senate, if he fought to keep that seat, then maybe you could have a coalition of republicans, maybe a Mitch Mcconnell, maybe murkows murkowski, maybe jeff flake, get three or four of them together, team up with some moderate centrist democrats and demand that the senate hear witnesses. They can go to Mitch Mcconnell and say you have to do this or you dont have 51 votes. Jeff flake can write the opeds he want wants. He would have been more valuable to reagan conservatives and nancy pelosi if he fought to keep the seat. Also Public Opinion matters here, in terms of applying pressure and a lot of people are waiting to see if their constituents support impeachment and polling shows impeachment hasnt turned battleground voters against President Trump. In 15 states decided by 15 points or less, the Top Democrats right now are running within margin of error with trump, does that surprise you, pete . Does anything surprise me any more, really, no. Im disappointed by it for sure. Its flabbergasting to understand how we live in these different realities in our country, the different truths. Some people are seeing one thing and some people are getting a completely different picture. I try to talk to Trump Supporters all the time on my podcast, reach out to them and understand where theyre coming from. Its hard to understand where theyre coming from. Because they have a different set of information. Maybe thats why, because they arent getting all the same information absolutely. Different realities, absolutely. Theres so much belief in conspiracy, the moon is made of cheese and thats frightening. 45 said while they believe the president shouldnt be impeached he did do something wrong. Republicans in the house we heard their speeches this week. None of them were complaining about what the president did. Let me ask you, matt, real quick because i have a little bit of time. You called your former party the republicans evil, and summed it up by saying this has created an opening for the Democratic Party to seize the moral high ground. Do any of the candidates for 2020 have your vote . No, i probably wont vote. As an opinion journalist you can argue its probably not good for me to vote. Im prolife, i have big issues, i wouldnt vote for donald trump for a billion reasons. This goes back to the old line, republicans were the stupid party and democrats were the evil party. I now think that republicans are the evil party. And i do think that democrats, who used to be the party tough on russia, used to be the republicans. Who used to be the party that liked protectionist trade policies, used to be the democrats. I think theyve switched and i think its happened on morals and values, too. Nancy pelosi is the one talking about decency, nancy pelosi is the one talking about the founding fathers. Republicans are talking down those things. Republicans are talking down our president s, talking down values. Its the world is turned upside down. Quickly, pete. I think its easier than republicans or democrats or liberals versus conservatives. The bottom line is do you agree with cheating to win . Will you do whatever it takes to suppress the vote . Will you do whatever it takes to win regardless of the constitution . A high number of americans will do whatever it takes to win, they could care less about democracy, they want to win no matter the cost. And theres the rest of us who care about democracy, care about rules and dont believe in cheating. I hope youre wrong. Well see when the vote happens. Good to see both of you. Happy holidays. New mucinex nightshift cold and flu. Christmas is days away, hanukkah is tomorrow, and millions of americans will be traveling for the holidays but a report may have you thinking hard about your safety or your loved ones safety. A whistleblower tells cnn that in an effort to keep things moving in the security lines, theyre putting passengers in danger. Reporter this tsa whistleblower is coming forward because he said the concerns he raised over the last couple years have not been addressed. He said the agency is putting speed over security. He says the tsa officers on the front lines are not to blame. These screening changes, he says, have come from tsa leadership. More than 40 million u. S. Airline passengers are expected to go through Airport Security checkpoints this holiday. But this tsa Security Director says you may not be as safe as you think. What theyre doing is injecting danger into the system. Reporter jay brainard is the top tsa official in his state and has been with the agency for 17 years. He says tsa is cutting corners on the screening process to shorten wait times. They reduced the sensitivity on all walk through metal detechtes across america. They reduced it to speed up lines. How do you know . Theres a memo that supports it. Reporter the memo said, quote, changing all walk through metal detecters to the preset setting. Brainard said the practice continues today and worries bomb making components could go undetected. You could have a 30 minute wait time and they treat it like a national merge. Its unhealthy obsession. Reporter he said that also led to them disabling xray machines. This memo states as of last month the xray machines should be operated without the autodetection algorithm enabled. A box will come around, surround the item say look at this, that box is no longer on the screen. Tsa made changes which hamper the ability of the operator. Theyll say its precheck. They put millions of passengers into precheck that arent precheck. So you dont have a population that are vetted. Reporter cnn put it to tsas adm administra administrator. He said the agency is not prioritizing wait times over security. I wont discuss our security procedures because thats not appropriate for me to do. But rest assured we provide the level of security we think is appropriate based on the risk to the passenger. Reporter brainard said the issues he raised are problematic for an agency with a 95 failure rate in detecting items at the checkpoint. Thats according to a government audit in 2015. When you sit back and watch these things happen, it is the most frustrating thing you can imagine. Reporter going public is his last resort. He filed an official whistleblower complaint with the office of special counsel he send complaints to dhs, tsa and letters to congress. Not just about the metal detecters but also the xray machines, a policy change allowing some passengers with medical devices to do a selfpat down and blended lanes, where precheck and standard passengers are mixed in one line. Something that could confuse screeners. They have to switch themselves on and off about whats permitted or not permitted with every other passenger. Our detection rates were not stellar last i checked. Reporter last year the special counsel ordered dhs to investigate his complaints writing there is a substantial likelihood that the information provided discloses gross mismanagement and specific danger to public safety. My biggest fear is having something happen that costs american lives and i didnt step up and put a stop to it, or at least try. Because its going to happen. Its not a question of if, its a question of when. Were long over due on another attack. Reporter the tsa took action on one of his complaints. He said they used an ineffective test to determine if new hires were colorblind. If you had something in a bag and somebody were colorblind they wouldnt see the bomb if it were the only thing in the bag. Reporter tsa is using a new test for new hires but according to this memo the agency will not finish retesting the existing workforce until the end of next year. He knows despite whistleblower protections and top ratings on his tsa performance evaluations speaking out could cost him his job. I fully expect the first discussion theyll have is how they can fire me. Reporter he believes the issues are too urgent to keep quiet. No changes have been made to the body scanners traveler go through. Cnn reached out to both agencies investigating his complaints but no comments from either. Brainard has secured a whistleblower attorney. In response to the claims in our story the head of tsa told me, we provide a valuable service and its our responsibility to fully investigate the concerns to see if they represent a valid Security Risk or not but the tsa said they have not completed their assessment. Ahead, an evangelical magazine calls for President Trump to be removed from the oval office. Hear why and if this impacts the president s religious base. Can you tell me the story again . This holiday season, memory support brand. You can find it in the vitamin aisle in stores everywhere. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. In a stunning rebuke, the leading christian publication, christianity today is calling for President Trump to be removed from office. The editor and chief of the magazine which was founded by billy graham penned an oped in part the president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration. He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immorale actions in business and relationships with women, about which he remains proud. His twitter feed alone is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused. He responded to the president s criticism of the magazine as far left. Its factually inaccurate were far left. Were centrist. We rarely comment on politics, unless we feel it rises to the level of some National Concern that we feel is important. We wrote editorials about clinton during his impeachment process, we wrote editorials about nixon in his. This struck me as rising to that level. Brian stelter joins us. How rare is an oped like this in a publication like christianity today. Incredibly rare. Thats why their servers crashed when this was published. Thats how much of a surprise it was, how much attention it was getting. This is a relatively small magazine, circulation of about 90,000 copies in print. In part because the president was so angry about it, this ended up being a multiday story. I would argue the president made it a bigger story by lashing out, lying about the magazine calling it far left. Let me read you another portion. We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear in a way the Mueller Investigation did not that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and bestrayed his constitutional oath. The hearings have illuminated the president s moral def moral deficiencies for all to see. Is this meaning its getting through . Yes. In response to the hearings, Trump Supporters came up with excuses, the democrats are worse or the media hates trump. What i appreciate about the editorial, its trying to talk about morality and ethics and be consistent saying we judged bill clinton 20 years ago, we must judge President Trump similarly. That desire or consistency, that rejection of hypocrisy is something i respect. The New York Times has a piece talking about how the president so often misquotes his allies on twitter and gets no repercussions. Let me read this. Mr. Trump has made a habit of injecting his own words into the comments of people he sees on television and then publishing them as direct quotes on twitter. In some instances he simply omits parts of the quote he doesnt like. More often than not, the allies who mr. Trump misquotes do little to publically contradict him. Whats the impact here . Back to the h word, hypocrisy. The president accuses the president , adam schiff and other democrats of making things up. Hes the one to change the quotes in a way to make him look better. Weve gotten used to his twitter stream. Im glad for this reminder how hes changing the meaning of words on his twitter feed. And wanting everyone to belief him not the facts themselves. Thats what it comes back to it. And it comes back to what he hears on fox news. Thats where he gets it. Hes tweeting things out from the channel. Including during after the impeachment vote, what was on the air. This is what he and others were hearing. Lets watch. Will this lead to the president being reelected . Im sure the president would say so. Permanent mark in the history books, wait until hes the first president impeached by house democrats, important distinction, to then be reelected by the people at the ballot box. The president had to like what he was hearing. This is effective but not 100 . Its 40 effective. Its effective with his base. Before the hearings we wondered would his fox firewall hold, the answer is yes. Its held extremely well. But trump is not gaining supporters, hes holding them, thats thanks to not just fox but right wing media. They are giving the president daily affirmation when hes not getting it elsewhere. The first since the Great Recession and according to a brand new poll, americans are feeling good about where we are at. 76 say they see the economy as good. Thats the highest ranking in nearly 20 years. On friday stocks hit a record high. Why does a new report from harvard say we have squandered a decade of unprecedented economic recovery. Part of the report, quote, past generations of leaders have used periods of Economic Growth to upgrade the nations Business Environment, to make america more e quitable and humane and to build fiscal strength to buffer future recessions. Our current leaders have accomplished none of these. One of the coauthors of the report joins us now. She served on the board of directors of the over seas private Investment Corporation under president obama. What didnt happen, first . What should the u. S. Have been able to accomplish in the last ten years . Its great to be here. Thank you. I would go with what you talked about in the introduction, which is to say theres almost a best practice for leadership in washington d. C. And how they should use periods of economic expansion, which is to set us up for the future. And as you noted, we havent done that in this past decade. What we look at in our report is not specifically how is the economy feeling today, but rather, how well positioned are we to be a competitive location Going Forward . And for us that means two things. First businesses have to be able to compete well globally, and also at the same time our businesses have to support jobs that provide high and rising standard of living to citizens. And what our work shows is that we have not positioned the American Economy well to be able to do those two things in the future. Thats a scary thought. Thats really the opportunity that weve squandered. Amid this unprecedented economic recovery, republicans did pass a series of historic tax cuts. Was that the right call . There are things that are absolutely right about the tax cut. But its also emblematic of how we quote unquote solve problems today in washington d. C. , the good thing we needed to move to territorial tax rate, we needed to raise the tax for the Corporate Tax system. But we needed to accomplish those while not adding dramatically to our National Deficit and then debt. We needed to close loopholes. We needed to not have such a regress ive system. What our political system is pretty good at today is solving things by not paying for them. Bypassing the bill to future generations. We had good policy here but we didnt pay for it. And that amounts to sort of success in todays system. Which is what we really see as a core problem in positioning ourselves for the future that our political system doesnt do that well. So were glad, certainly, that people feel this sense of optimi optimism, according to your cnn poll. And yet, when we survey our alumni and they look forward, they show concerns about our ability to continue delivering good results for people given that there will at some point be another recession, we havent used this time to our optimal benefit. You also write about the importance of shared prosperity, that being the foundation of a healthy economy. I want you to listen to senator Bernie Sanders, who speaks about that largely and this was just at a debate a couple of nights ago. We are living in a nation increasingly becoming an olgarchy, you have a handful of billionaires who spend hundreds of millions of dollars buying elections and politicians. You have more income and wealth inequality today than any time since the 1920s. We are the only major country on earth not to guarantee health care for all people, which is why we need medicare for all. We are facing an existential crisis of climate change. The issue is not old or young, male or female. The issue is working people standing up, taking on the billionaire class, and creating a government and economy that works for all not just the 1 . Katherine, senator sanders describes him as a democratic socialist. Your report hits both sides. What part of what Bernie Sanders is laying out would differ from what your study is saying . What we find and where we agree with Bernie Sanders is that the fruits of this recovery have not been evenly distributed. They have gone disproportiona disproportionately to the upper percentages of the wage earners in this country. And that is a weakness of the recovery and how weve used it. And its a weakness thats likely to extend into our future. Because we havent, as a country, in washington d. C. Actually invested in what its going to take to continue to compete successfully. We havent invested in created the kind of Business Environment that will actually address these uneven benefits of the recovery. We often talk about how our work shows that this ability to deliver what we talk about is the American Dream remains still weaker than its been in generations. Katherine, thank you. We need to be making, you know, investments in our infrastructure and k12 education, in health care, and that isnt what were good at in washington d. C. Were good at gridlock and at passing the bill. Great to have your expertise. Thank you for sharing with us. Thank you. Itll be here before you know it, two best friends one epic night, ring in the new year with andy cohen and anderson cooper. Were learning about his reasoning tonight and i have to warn you some of it is graphic and disturbing. Reporter his single term as governor may be over but hes drawing criticism ant hundreds of pardons he issued. Last week he took to the airwaves to defend releasing a rapist, his reason, quote, the victims hymen was intact. This is perhaps more specific than people would want, but trust me if you had been repeatedly sexually violated there would be repper canushion on that. There is a system that should have caught this long before that. You should not be sent to jail based simply on the word, and uncob rated word of a single individual, especially when it is possible to verify that medically and physically, and there were no ability to do so. Reporter but that shouldnt be the only factor according to medical researchers, a 2012 study revealed physical signs of sexual abuse should not be the only indication of an assault on a child. The survey found approximately 90 of child victims of abuse do not show evidence of physical damage. Prosecutors are also questioning the pardoning, including the commonwealth attorney, rob sanders, who originally pursued the case. He calls for a review of the former governors action. I would prefer a statewide investigation led by either federal Law Enforcement or a special prosecutor. However that hasnt happened. Until then ill be conducting my own investigation. Cnn reached out to bevin and shuttles attorney for comment. Bevin posted statement on twitter defending his pardons, saying the Justice System isnt perfect and i personally spent hundreds of hours reading every application and file of those who received a pardon.
