First these words from the president a few minutes ago, and of course prshgs the twitter feed. Armed edge kay rs or the and entrusted people who work within a school love our students and will protect them. Very smart people. M must be firearms adept and have annual training, should get yearly bonuses. Shoot in shootings will not happen again. A big and very inexpensive deterrent. Finishing by saying up to states. Plenty for our analysts toboth debate of guns in america. It is a debate driving Large Companies to ditch the nra and these are a few of them, but the standouts delta and United Airlines and six major rental car companies, banks, cybersecurity firms are dropping the benefits they used to offer nra members and in many cases, dema demanding that the nra take their names and logos off of the website. Also today, more details about how Police Officers responded when bullets started flying inside of the florida high school. How many cops showed up, and how long they waited outside while students and teachers were dead and dying inside. Today, two Different Police departments are at odds over who should have done what. Now, we go live to Kaylee Hartung in parkland, florida, and kayleigh, about that police response, and we are are told that one Police Department is upset about how another departments deputies behave ed that way, and what can you the tell us . That is right, ryan. As people are visiting the memorial behind me today, they are devastated to hear the reports. And we first heard from the Broward County Sheriffs Department that their sheriff was sick to his stomach when he first saw Surveillance Video that showed one of his deputies the schools resource officer take up a position outside of that Stoneman Douglas building for upwards to four minutes while the killer was inside, but now we are learning from the Coral Springs Police Department that the one deputy is not the only man who did not do his job that day. Coral springs police saying that when their officers arrived on the scene, they were surprised to find three other Broward County sheriffs deputies outside of that School Building taking up defensive positions, and their weapons drawn behind their vehicles. That means four deputies who chose in that moment with the gunman inside attacking students and teachers not the go inside that building. Broward county Sheriffs Department is saying that the investigation is open into the acti actions of the deputies that day. And kaylee, not just the local response that is being looked at, because there was a call to the fbi saying that they knew that the shooter was a p b problem. What about that . Well, earlier in the week, the fbi edadmitted that they improperly handled and failed to act on a tip that came into their hotline on january 5th from a woman familiar with the killer. And now we have a transcript of that call log. Listen to what she said as i read it. She told the fbi quote, hes only 18, but he has the mental capacity of a 12 to 14yearold. If you are going on to the instagram pages, you will see all of the guns. I just want somebody to know about this and look into it, and i will have a clear conscience that if he goes to some place and starts shooting it up, i will know that i notified the fbi. And we know that he had money from his mothers bank account, and yet when that call was over, we know that he went to the supervisor and they determined no imminent threat and the case was closed within the hour. This is just another one of the red flag s ths that we have see before february 14th. And we have heard from the classmates and the neighbors of the emotional outbursts prone to having, but now with the help of the affiliate wptv, we have a 911 call last november that the ki killer made that gives you insight into the mental state following one of the outbursts. Take a listen. 911 emergency. Hi. I was just somebody attacked me and i dont know where i am in. The thing is that i lost my mother a couple of days ago and so, like im the tealing with with a bunch of things right now, and she [ bleep ] me and threw me out of the house. And he started attacking me, and kicked me out of the house. That call from last november a couple of weeks after the killers mother died. He had moved in with family friend, and he had gotten into the al the terication with the familys son and left the house which led to the call, but ryan, you can hear the instability in the voice there. No doubt. Chilling to hear the audio there. Kaylee hartung, thank you. The list of the Companies Cutting ties with the nr, a got longer today. Delta and American Airlines are cutting discounts offered to nra members and this is threats as consumer boycotts are mounting following that deadly shooting. I want to bring in polo sandoval, and how intense is the pressure . Well, it is intense enough, ryan, for Major Companies to say no to nra. American airlines took to twitter early in the morning announcing that they plan to part ways with the National Rifle association. Let me read you the tweet they posted this morning when they made that announcement. United saying that quote, united is notifying the nra that we will no longer offer a discounted rate to the annual meeting, and we are are asking the nra to remove our information from the website. And if you logged on to delta website, you saw a similar message posted as well. That atlantabased Company Making their decision known as well. And so they are also severing ties as you read the lower portion of the tweet asking them to remove deltas information from the website as well. When you are look at the list again, you can see that there are so many recognized brands, and recognized companies as well that decided to go in that direction, particularly after this mounting heat that was that we watch and watched play out on social media. Several of the companies are taking heat for the partnership with the nra and particularly after the parkland shooting, ryan. What is interesting here, though, is that the companies, the massive corporations have not said specifically why or when they they reached the decision, but reading between the line, it is a result of politics, and business intersecting. And more, polo, because the conversation is continuing and the pressure on amazon who is one of the most valuable companies in the world and they stream nra tv and they are getting pressure to stop that. What is the latest . Yes, nra tv is used as a channel on that platform on amazon. Com, and what we are hearing from the gun safety groups is that they are hoping to put pressure on amazon to essentially partways with nra as well, but however, when you are hearing from at least one host of the National Rifle association television, you can hear that they are certainly trying to put some pressure on amazon not buckle under some of the requests that have we seen online, and the host of the nra tv grant stitchfield saying that i hope that social media realizes and the knuckleheads on social media realize that the 5 million nra members are the most patriotic and most proamerican members of our society. We have every right to be on amazon, and other internet giants roku and apple offer a platform for the nra tv have not said much. Roku said that customers have the options. They can choose what to watch and what not the to the watch. And amazon, no response from them quite yet. All right. P polo, the beginning and not the end of this conversation. Polo sandoval, thank you very much. Now, back to the day when the gunman opened up fire insooinside of a high school killing 17 students and staff. And we have new details this weekend of how one officer responded to the scene and stayed outside, but there are many more, and as many as four sheriff ares deputies waited outside of the school with the guns drawn and taking cover behind the police cars. We might want the talk about this with James Gagliano who is our Law Enforcement analyst and exfbi agent, and also, Alice Stewart because there is a sharply politicals aspect to wht happened in that day and the days since. James, lets start with you s, d you understand the training aspect of all of, this and how would the sheriffs deputy have been trained to respond to Something Like this . Would it have been his job the go in there to confront the shoot ner in this situation . Ryan, one word here, the deputys actions were unconscionable, and we can talk in the macro sense of the colossal collapse of the systems and the colossal failure to connect the dots from the Mental Health of this, a tnd the lower jurisdictional of the police not following up on this actionable lead, but the conduct of the deputy and deputies there from Broward County, and i cannot fathom them. I have spoken to a number of onboard Law Enforcement professionals and number of retired, and i cant tell you one person in that cadre of folks who can understand this. I understand that in a situation like this the Old School Way of doing this precolumbine was to stay outside and create a perimeter and wait for the cavalry to get there. And post columbine, if you have nothing is the courage is not the absence of fear, but the mastery of it. And if he could not respond to gun fire, then he should have resigned long ago. Too late. And lets talk about the politics of it, james, as we bring in alice and simone. And alice, this is obviously a question for republicans, and particularly the republicans in the congress. Are they going to do something about this. From your sense as a conservative, do you see momentum in that direction . I certainly do. I have talked with many members of congress, and several of them have met personally with the president , and they tell me that the president is very committed to doing something here. And it is more than just about gun control there. Are many factors as he has outlined and looking at several fac rs or the and stricter background checks would have gone a long way in case. This kid who did this shooting should have never, ever have had a gun and neither should other people with their type of Mental Illness and the red flags that went up, and stricter background checks are critical and that is something that the president is pushing for, and hardening of the schools and no more gunfree zone, and making sure that people know that there are guns there to return fire if they go there, and many other factors to go into this which is also going to be what the president is getting a lot of heat for, but something to consider arming the teachers or arming other people at the school, and a drawn gun outside of a School Building which is what we had here does nothing to stop this, a drawn gun inside of the school whether it is a teacher or another trained professional will go a long way to stopping this. I dont think it should be mandatory for all teachers, but as the president said, these need to be people adept at firearms and well trained. I know that congressman mark med dose has talked with the president to look at ways to fund it, and it cant all be done at the federal level and possibly tax incentives for the retired Law Enforcement or military officials who have the training the do this, but the question that i know that republicans and democrats across the board are willing to engage in. And simone, i get the sense that you feel differently. If i may. We just talked through the scenario, of a real life scenario that just happened in parkland where there were trained officers on the scene that would not and did not go into the school, and had their firearms drawn. So if train ed officers have an issue, what makes folks think that we should be putting the guns in the hands of the teacher, and guns in the hands of the janitors or other folks inside of the schools who are already tasked with the enormous task of educating kids in a Public School environment in which many schools are underfunded, so we are having a unrealistic conversation here. There are many things to this, and yes, the Mental Health aspect, and yes, we need to tighten the background check, and close the gun show loopholes, but also with other folks, i believe that we should ban the semi antiautomatic weapons bark because they are weapons of war and not belonging in the streets of children on the streets. So that is a question that our republican friends are not having that we should be having. But back to the point of arms the teacher, james. You are a Law Enforcement, and i want your perspective on this. Is this a wise decision or something that the president should be pushing for or practically something to apply nationwide . I am not known on cnn for being agnostic or offensive, but i will are agree with a lit bit of what alice said and symone says. When an officer goes out to the range to complete the training they hit the target 75 or 80 of the time, with a paper target with no rounds coming back at you, and what we have found in studies on the krimology side generally speaking with anned a ver sarl contact that drops down to 17 to 18 , and ryan, 1 of every 5 rounds hits a target. So the notion of Arming Teachers and trying to keep them proficient, iing a free with symone, it is a fools errand, but however, i teach the at st. Johns university and im a retired Law Enforcement officer with a job and former swat leader and i work in a gunfree zone, and while i can have a concealed permit, i cannot carry the weapon on campus, and that is nonsensical, and so we have to find out a way to get to some sensical solutions. And we have to the corporate activism, and groups to dissociate with the nra and symone, we have seen this pressure work in the past, and do you feel it is effective and how would you feel if corporations took an issue such as abortion and took a stance and stopped doing business like planned parenthood, would ta be effective . We have not seen the Corporations Act until the last 24 to 48 hours, and in that time, the spokesperson for nra repeatedly attacked young people via social media who have been rekre recently victims of the gun massacre at their school, High Schoolers and part of it is that the nra is a brand and organization and some would argue a company, and you cannot send your spokesperson out to say and do things and not think that there are not going to be rerepercussion, and if they were a business perhaps the spok spokesperson should not be out attacking young people and young people who were victims of the massacre, and they are not members of the gun lobby and that is the knew sauns, because these corporations did not actt post kcolumbine and did not act post pulse or post las vegas. So i think that the parkland is different because the students are involved, but in this particular case here, the nra has been voeb cal on this been vocal on this, and regardless of the sides of the aisle you are on, you should not attack victims and children who have lost friends and teachers in a gun massacre at their school. And to her point, alice, are you concerned that it is a slippery slope when corporations are getting this active in politics and taking a dramatic stance like boycotting organizations like the nra. I wish the corporations would be be more involved if they are so concerned about life which is an important issue, and planned parenthood is the largest Abortion Provider taking over 300,000 unborn children every year and where is the corporation outrage there, and if we want to talk about life. But we have spoken about many factors other than guns, and the antigun lobby is loud and proud and certainly very good at getting the message out to get the corporations to act like this, but it is much more than guns. This is about taking all guns out of the hands of some people, and not some guns out of the hands of all people. There are 5 million nra members across this country who will stand strong on their support of the Second Amendment to have the right to bear arms and they should be able to, and the nra is there to protect the right s a and to stand up for them, so i dont i want to say that no one is ever talking about taking away the Second Amendment and all gun guns for all people, and we have a real live situation of a lionel castille who worked at school with a licensed firearm on him, and when h pulled over by the Police Officer and said that he was a licensed gun carrier and a had the firearm on him and reaching for the i. D. And he was shot and killed, so we have to have real Practical Implications here. So it is not that folks want to take the guns away from everybody, and no one is ever saying that, and no one on the left or the progressive people and myself and im from nebraska and i have gone hunting and nobody is trying to take guns away from folks. So weapons of war should not be in the anywhere in the country, and especially in the hands of children where folks are saying that we should not be Arming Teachers and people are saying that we need to get to the heart of the issue and i want to talk about everything else, but it is not knives out here killing the folks, and knives did not take out everybody, and 17 people at parkland and semiautomatic rifle did. All right. We have the loef it there. And Symone Sanders and Alice Stewart and James Gagliano, thank you all. And ahead, a former Trump Campaign aide reachs a plea deal. What we thought would happen for weeks finally happened. Former senior Trump Campaign aide will the testify against his former boss Paul Manafort. This in a scheme to launder millions of dollars. So now, where does the Robert Mueller investigation go next . Joining us is carrie cordero, and report foretr Washington Post is josh dawsey, and carrie, we will start with you. You have read the charging document, and the defense of the gates deal, and what is your biggest takeaway . Well, he has pleaded gille ti to 10001 which is lying to federal investigator, and he has also plead gille ti to conspiracy, a charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States. That is the overarching theme of not only some of the charges against manafort and gates, but also the charge that the special counsel brought against the russian nationals, so this entire investigation in terms of looking into russian influence on the election and all of the different individuals who are now being drawn into that investigation pertains the to conspiracy to defraud the United States. And so, that was in the manaforts and gates situation, and involved in their Money Laundering activities and tax evasion, bank fraud and a things like that. We are spect to russian influence, it was an attempt to affect the election. And these are the charges so far. The special counsels office has in my opinion a long way the go, but certainly the events of the last week r or two are significant markers in that investigation. And josh, of course, this changes the calculus a little bit for Paul Manafort and does this put a lot more pressure on him to cooperate with Robert Mueller . Well, he is clearly frustrated with the statement yesterday that he said that he is disappointed in the former Business Partner robert gates for pleading, and he was explicitt with the first Statement Released by the team. The two of them were almost interchangeable, and they were together in all of the business ventu venture, and often accompanied each other on the campaign, and he was his deputy and he knows everything that mr. Manafort has been doing, and the meetings and the transactions and the document s documents as we saw in the indictment, so it is not a good sign for mr. Manafort that mr. Gates has plead guilty. And with that said, mr. Gates has information on how the Trump Campaign work and he was in the white house for meetings, so he was not a small bit player in the campaign, and even after the administration began, he was a frequent visitor to 1600 pennsylvania, so particularly in the early months, so it is significant that he has plead gi guilty and agreed to cooperate with the federal prosecutors and investiga investigators. And to the that point, josh, there is obviously manafort and president trump, you mentioned that rick gates was around that campaign and went into the transition a lot longer than Paul Manafort did, and is that possible for mueller to draw a direct line from gates to the president . Well, it is hard to say, and dont make any predictions ors a sum shuns at this point, because as we have seen from the special counsels investigations, there are twists and turns that nobody saw coming. But i certainly think it is noteworthy how involved he was, and rick gates is somebody who was frequently at trump tower, and in strategy sessions, and he knew what was going on, and even in the early days in the transition. He was a key player. And so i dont want to say it will go straight to the president , because we dont know anything along those lines yet, but he has a lot of information about the president and the campaign activities. And carrie n the plea deal rick gates admits to lying to investigators and we have seen this charge appear over and over so far in the special counsel investigation, and certainly former National Security adviser mike flynn plead guilty to that. This is with what jim heinz had to say about that. You read that the indictment, and the level of detail that bob mueller has, and he knows everything. So as this investigation is proceeding, i think that mueller is sending the signal that i know a lot more than you know, and be very, very careful how you answer my questions. So, carrie, do you read thiss a message from muellerer to the everyone who is interviewed and who is going to be interviewing with him . Well, it is more than the message, because it carries criminal penalties, and so anybody whether they are brought before the grand jury that the special counsels office has convened or whether they are interviewed by investigators as a part of the investigation, either way, they can be held liable, and they can be charged if they lie to in either of the situations. We know that there have been many individuals, and some that we know about publicly who were connected to the campaign and worked on the the campaign and there have been white house officials as well as there are probably others that we dont know who have appeared before the grand jury or been interview and all of those individuals if they lie during the course of those interviews or the appearances, this office is clearly willing to charge them for that act. All right. Carrie cordero, thank you for that. And josh dawsey, thank you for joining us, and we appreciate your being here. Just a head, they are waiting to die. A grave warning from u. S. Security council has just adopted a ceasefire in syria. A vote to stop the relentless bombs and allow aid deliveries and medical evacuations into and out of the hellscape that is worsening with every passing minute. I want to warn you that the pictures that you will see are horrific, graphic and necessary to show. Absolutely heartbreaking. A hero in a white helmet drags a screaming child from the landscape of rubble and dust. This is in ghouta, a rebel enclave, but it is the civilians who are dying in staggering numbers and more than 400 of them now since just sunday. Women and children and the elderly are killed while waiting for the vote on the other side of the world. U. S. Ambassador to the u. N. Nikki haley is launching a scathing attack on russia for stalling the ceasefire. As they dragged tout negotiation, the bombs from assads fighter jets continued to fall n. Three days that it took us to adopt this resolution, how many mothers lost their kid s s to the bombi and the shelling . How many more images did we need to see of fathers holding their dead children . And after all of this time, hardly anything has changed in the resolution except for a few words and some commas. The Syrian People should not have to die waiting for russia to organize their instructions for moscow. Or to discuss it with the se syrians. I want the bring in richard roth now, our cnn senior u. N. Correspondent, and despite the awful pictures, richard, and the awful tragedy taking place inside of syria, this felt like a showdown between russia and the United States here in new york city, and talk us through what happened on the floor of the snun. These days it seems that every big meeting is a showdown between u. S. And russia and maybe another one monday on yemen. Behind the scenes of the negotiating rooms Ambassador Haley was there with the Russian Ambassador and others on the council, and Ambassador Haley we are told was pushing hard for firmer deadlines and firmer access and better and stronger words inside of this resolution. Nobody knows if the Syrian Government or all other actors in this big country of syria going through some much violence will comply. Basically, it is interesting, because haley was not around thursday or friday and giving a speech in chicago friday and i asked about yesterday, and nobody knew, but she has a style that diplomats say she can get some things done, and whether she was the difference and frustration among the councilmembers, we dont know, but only in there two hours, and friday it was eight to ten hours without the agreement, and whether this is helping the carnage end and the people can get the badly needed aid and evacuations, we will know soon. The Syrian Ambassador finished speaking, ryan, and he said that we have shown the maximum selfrestrai selfrestraint, and it is the terrorist, and he wanted an end to other countries being inside of syria, and the same talk, but russia fought back in the remarks and the ambassador was challenging Ambassador Haleys rhetoric which he has done quite often. And while the squabbling continues, the deaths continue to mount. Richard roth at the united nations. Thank you. Hogg and others have had to endure a Vicious Smear Campaign as there is a rumor and innuendo and outright lies that the students were make everything up. We are taking their talking points from the antigun lobby. I want to bring in the panel the to talk about this, cnn political commentator for the daily beast matt lewis, and cnn. Com contributor and the host of the dean abdallah show of xm sirius radio, dean abdallah. And so lets go to the president s son who liked the tweets about hogg and does it alarm you when people of prominent parties give credence to the lies. Well, it is malicious or igno ignorance and either way, inexcusable. We have to be very diligent about this. We have to be, you know, i think it is incumbent upon all of us now to be skeptical of the things that we see. I would hope that the trump, that the president s son was not intentionally trying to advance this, you know, scurrilous rumor, but we have to be much better consumers of news. Because it is so easy now for people to manipulate information and to put it out there and easier than it used to be. Yeah, no doubt. And dean, it has been extraordinary to watch how these student survivors have been reacted to being a accused of paid actors. Take a listen to one of the responses. It is absolutely ridiculous to say the least that i am a good actor is just i mean, if anything it is a compliment and i hope that the academy is watching. If you had seen me in the schools production of fiddler on the roof you would know that nobody would pay me to act for anything. I would like to think that people have been saying this about me, and i hope it is great advertising, because it is working, and for people to say that, we wouldnt have as many people here. And these kids are not bothered by this, and is that positive that they are using e humor to respond to the attacks . Well, humor is a great coping mechanism and it is so sad that the kids because of the political views have been demonized by people like former sheriff david clark, and donald trump jr. And he knew what he was clicking on and politics and the kids eight or nine days living the life, and dreaming of a better life and maybe going to college and a guy walks in with a weapon of war and they have to deal with the bloody rampage and then be attacked by some of the extreme voices on the right, and it is one of the most vile things i have seen in a year and aof vileness that i didnt think that anything could stun me, but the sense of humor inspires to us know that they are tough and they will continue to have this fight to keep america safe from gun violence. This conduct is beyond appropriate and beyond the pale, but, matt s this incumbent on us as consume toers root out what is real and fake . Absolutely. Look, i think that the sad thing is that there are a lot of americans out there who are not really sophisticated consumers of information. And part of it is that the technology has happened so fast. Our brains are the same brains that we had hundreds of years ago and, so, you know, thousands of years ago and back with evolution, and we are trying to adapt and trying to cope with dramatic changes of technology, and if you are an older person, lets say you get on the facebook once in a while, and maybe you are a conservative who already distrusts the media, and you dont believe the liberal media, fine. But maybe there is a good reason for that sometimes, but you are now susceptible to these lies, and, it is super dangerous. Wraend have to be very cautious, and in terms of consumers of information. If you see Something Like this, check it out. Assume, you know, dont just believe that because alex jones says it or because, your aunt emails you, do not believe that it is true. Right. Right. And now, will lets goat the debate now over the gun, and matt, there are striking similarity between what the nra leader Wayne Lapierre said at cpac and what the president said in the same day on school sa safety. Lets listen to both. It should not be easier for a mad man to the shoot up a school than a bank or a Jewelry Store or some hollywood g a alaala. I want my schools protect ed just like my banks are protected. We Must Immediately harden the schools. We need to harden them and not soften them up. We drop off the kids at schools of socalled gunfree zones that are wide open targets for any crazy madman bent on evil to come there first. A gunfree zone to a killer or somebody who wants to be a killer, that is like going in for the ice cream. That is like, here i am, take me. So we saw that the president did conduct a listening session with the victims, but realistically, and not just the president , but the republicans, paul ryan and mitch mcconnell, and can they separate themselves from the nra when it comes to the policy push . They k and i think it would be smart for donald trump to do so even though they have heavily funded his president ial bid, he could have a Sister Souljah moment, and only nixon goes to china moment where donald trump could transcend his base for once and that is what bill clinton did and would have done. Look, i dont know if donald trump just thinks like Wayne Lapierre or whether they are singing off of the same choir sheet. I personally think that it would be great to harden the schools, and to secure them better, but it should only be one facet of the much larger reform program. And the fear here is that they want to just do that, right . We wont do anything else, but we are just going to put, you know, more security inle schools. I think that is going to be a mistake. And you know, he is still talking to the nra and we know that definitively he had a conversation with chris cox, the executive director, and the unfortunate thing, we have to the leave it there. This conversation is obviously ongoing and still exists in some respects. Matt and dean, thank you for joining us. Will, what are we learning about ivankas stop in south korea and her involvement in amping up the pressure on north korea . Well, you know, ryan, more nan a year into the trump presidency, theres still no u. S. Ambassador to south korea. Ivanka came with two missions, one, the photo ops we saw, smiling, waving, taking pictures, cheering on u. S. Athletes. But the more Important Role was the back channel discussions all the way to the top of south koreas leadership where she laid out president trumps north korea strategy and talked about the new sanctions where theyre trying to isolate north korea further economically by cutting off all of the ships that the u. S. Says they have been using to conduct illicit transfers of Raw Materials out at sea, out away from the eyes of spy planes and what not so north korea can sell the materials to countries like china and russia, which obviously are not affected by the current sanctions. So the u. S. Treasury is trying to crack down on that.
