His exwives, and thats whats happening is sad. It was very sad when we heard about it, and, certainly, hes also very sad now. He also, as you probably know, he says hes innocent, and i think you have to remember that. He said very strongly yesterday that hes innocent, so youll sl have to talk to him about that, but we absolutely wish him well. Combine that statement with the president s tweet. Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true. Some are false. Some are new. Some are old. Theres no recovery for someone falsely accused. Life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as due process . Kelly ann conway was asked about the lack of empathy on another sunday news program. This is how she answered. The president is doing a great job for americas women. We have to look at the full picture. You have 800,000 women taking new jobs because of his leadership last year. You have women working at over 300 companies now getting wages and benefits and Capital Investments happening within their own communities. We are a safer, more prosperous nation, including all of us, incoming the nations women because of Donald Trumps leadership. Here are the facts on this issue of Domestic Violence. Each day in the u. S. , three or more women are murdered by an intimate partner on average, and out of all female homicide victims, more than half are killed by a male partner. In other words, more women are killed in the u. S. Every year by a partner claiming to love them than by terrorism. For a president promising to make america safe again, those numbers should matter. Something else that should also matter to the president , the impact his words have on the more than 10 million women and men who are victims of Domestic Violence every year. Women, like willaby, rob porters exwife, spoke to Time Magazine today and writes, the words mere allegation and falsely accused mean to imply im a liar, that holderness is a liar, and the work that rob was doing in the white house was of higher value than our well being, and his contributions are worth more than the truth, that abuse is something to be questioned and doubted. Now, she goes on, ultimately, this is not a political issue. This is a societal issue, and the tone has just been reset by the white house. If the most powerful people in the nation do not believe my story of abuse in the face of overwhelming evidence, then what hope do others have to be heard . Lets discuss with conserve commentator, and our National Political reporter, and, i want to start you understand you actually know people who are involved in this story. What can you tell us about rob porters relationships with the exwives . I have a mormon family and mormon background, and rob porter is mormon, his father was my professor at harvard university. A friend of mine dated the first exwife, colby, and based on his experience with her, happened after the marriage broke off, that the accusations and the stories she told him are verified based on, you know, earlier accounts of what she told him, that it was true that he was, indeed, an abuser, which is tragic and horrible. Enough has not been said theres a great story on cnn. Com by mj lee looking at success temperaturically a big problem in the personal life of people like rob porter because this was a systemic problem. There were many republicans who saw the professional look. Theres senator rob portman, you know, senator d. C. Circuit court judge, a spiritual mentor of mine, and rob porter taught at Brigham Young university as well. Professionally, its clear all these professional successes for rob porter happened while he was reportedly abusing both his wives, so this was a problem that she had not reported to their bishops at the time, both women, and unfortunately, the systemic problems of the Mormon Church are not equipped to deal with Domestic Abuse. The mormon charge has a lei priesthood. They are not a psychotherapist or dealt they dont in many cases report this to, you know, public officials. This is a huge problem that in the personal life of someone like rob porter, it needs to be managed more carefully, and the Mormon Church has been failing. Not just the Mormon Church, but society, this is an issue, you know, across the spectrum in which women are saying our voices are not heard. Ive done a number of stories that have to do with abuse including on College Campuses up to nursing homesing and the women who are victims are survivors tell me they were afraid to tell their story to speak their truth because they didnt know if they would be believed or if they would be blamed for what they suffer. Do you agree with rob porters exwife that the president is essentially calling her a liar . Yes. Because hes done that in almost every major case where hes commented on abuse. He has defaulted to the accused. Moore, bill oreilly, himself, Kelly Ann Conway this morning on the sunday show said he wants to consider all sides. Look, when you have credible evidence much police reports, contemporaneous accounts from witnesses or people that these victims told, and fbi background check investigations, a photograph of a black eye, to me, the restraining order, these are things that, im sorry, if any objective person looks at this and says, these are credible accusations, and how about we have some empathy for the victims. Do you know how many of those, you know, three women that are murdered a day from Domestic Abuse probably told someone and didnt believe them . Or because of that, they felt they were not worth it enough to escape . I mean, this is a major problem in the Domestic Abuse problem in this country. Its a major aspect of why women dont leave because they dont feel they have a safe space to go to or that anyone believes them or god forbid someone who is powerful or popular they somehow become its their fault or consider his career, which is what one of the wives told someone in the church. All of these things contribute to why the me too movement now is so important and powerful. Do women sometimes make false accusations and people sometimes sadly, that happens. It does happen. Thats the exception. Thats not the rule. We should not be using that as an excuse to excuse away someones like rob porter or judge moore or anybody else. Heres the other thing, you talked about the evidence there was in this case. Overwhelming. That would be very easy to say we believe the women, but, i mean, even just the issue on its face, why is it difficult for the president to say, there is no place for Domestic Violence in this white house . Exactly. I mean, this is the kind of situation where you really dont have any other choice other than to kind of hit it out of the park on this, right . All you have to say is a baseline of, we dont condone this behavior, and, you know, its not surprising coming from this president because as you laid out, there have been several incidences as a candidate, as a president where this has happened, but to come out and say those things that he did in the white house, not even to mention the women at all, after those photos and all of the evidence had been put forth in the public, not only that statement, but the tweets today continuing on that line make it clear that this is the president s position on this, and its really important to note, too, that this is a president who has elevated conspiracy theories about other people, and when it comes to people that he likes, people that he wants to support, you know, he asks for more evidence, and i think theres a huge discrepancy here. The other thing about this issue is theres so many layers to it, right . Not only the Domestic Abuse part of it, but it raises questions about the white houses hiring practices, conflicting timeline john kelly presented versus whats out there on the rob porter firing, and the security clearances. This is not app issue going away any time soon, and the president is only furthering this. We played that sound bite with Kelly Ann Conway at the top and another one where she talks about how the president creates jobs for women. Is job growth and, you know, putting women in high profile positions really the only thing she can point to to show the president s support of women . And if thats the case, is that a good thing . Well, i think if what she was talking about is sort of a broader conservative message which is that all women or all issues are womens issues, that sometimes, unfortunately, when progressives are trying to say womens issues, they try to put women in a box, and i think thats what she was getting at, and thats the problem, i see over and over, somehow im not allowed to care about Kitchen Table issues because im a woman, but care about a narrow box of issues. I would have liked to see more from the president. I agree with what was said. I like to see him proactively coming out against this. I think there was a real failure, if its true, if the reporting is true that general kelly knew about this weeks or months before this came out publicly, this needs to be accountability on the part of kelly and the reporting says that perhaps he might be on the way out the door. I do want to bring in a quote that i think is, you know, hopefully is Silver Lining in this from one of the victims of larry nassar, the u. S. Gymnastics coach, and said, i hope you feel the soul crushing guilt of what you have done, and i hope that rob porter feels the soul crushing guilt of what shes done, but she said shed pray for him to find grace, hope, and mercy. I think in this situation, thats all that we can do as well is pray that all the victims in the situation will find that, but that rob porterinport eer, finds that as well, feels the soul crushing guilt of what hes done, but hell also i dont believe anyone is ir redeemable, and i believe he could find a way to redeem himself, but it will take a long time, and hes not come to terms with his guilt. This is not a partisan issue, but cant help republicans cause with getting female voters. No. This is awful. Republicans are already in trouble with women voters after donald trump, and making so many excuses for him and his comments and behavior and access Hollywood Video and trumps history of disparaging comments of women and mistreatment of women. They were already in trouble. When you see a Record Number of women running for office at state and local levels happening already in the off year election, now going into a midterm, and more and more women look to run for office, and a lot is inspired by the me too movement inspired by donald trump and his behavior and just what that says as a society, women are stepping up and saying, no, were not going to take this anymore, and i think thats great, but the republicans, i where an article for cosmopolitan about this when donald trump was elected. I said republicans are going to lose a generation of voters if they do not stand up to the kinds of things donald trump is doing saying, even from a moral side of things, and heres another example of that. We already know that the republicans on the hill are very upset about the way trump handled this because it took the focus off the ball, which is economics success, the tax cuts, things like the Kelly Ann Conway, trying to pivot. Yeah. Using the example of, well, 800,000 jobs were created. Well, yes, he beats me, but pays for the mortgage and buys me cars. That doesnt make it okay. Exactly. Nice try, but it doesnt make it okay. This is an issue we shouldnt be getting cookies to people and stars on the shoulders because they acknowledge the president mishappen mishandled it. I read about the stats on violence, three women are killed on average, each year, 10 million men and women are victims of Domestic Violence in the u. S. Do the president s words on issues like this matter . Certainly. And, again, there was ample opportunity for him to say we dont condone this behavior for the women in the white house to come out and say, these are the statistics we dont condone this behavior. A lot of missed opportunities on this, and im not sure that much will change in terms of the president s approach because we have not really seen him change his approach on other issues like this, but its really interesting that, against this backdrop of the me too movement and the backdrop of the country facing a really cultural reckoning on the issue of assault and beyond, that the president has not been hes been removed from this. Hes not been able to engage on this issue, and its its kind of really telling about what is holding him back on this. Because he cant. Hes facing similar accusations, so any acknowledgement of the victims or this is a real thing means he has to face it himself. He will never do that. Its against his character. Its not in his dna, never has, and he never will. This is not the last time well see his fail in the moral leadership of the prized office. Real quick we have heard nikki said the women need to be heard, which i agree, and the truth will prevail. Looking at the accusations of the women, a lot of them happened where there was no evidence, and looking at the president s tweet where he called for due process, nobody at the table or any viewer would say we shouldnt have due process in this country. I think it shouldnt be an either or proposition, but every accusation is 10,000 correct and not have due process. Thats here me here. Thats what he touched on in the tweet. The due process argument here is a copout. Nobody disagrees people deserve due process. Most reasonable people agree with that. Wheres the due process for the women who are not believed that have the credible evidence. When you have this much evidence, you should have discernment and judgment in a circumstance like that. And the bigger question how do the women who dont have the evidence thats right. Because they were too afraid to speak up. Thats right. And now come forward with stories. Ladies, thank you all for the thoughtful conversation. Good to have you all on tonight to discuss this. All right. The Vice President mike pence is back in washington this week, in south korea, representing the United States in the winter Olympic Games opening ceremony, a short visit, but one that made a lot of news. At one point, the Vice President was feet away from the sister of north Korean Leader kim jong un. They did not exchangeglance, bu, they may have cracked open a diplomatic door to possible talks between washington and pyongyang. I want to bring in our Cnn National Security analyst and cnns political analyst, josh rogan. This reporting comes from you, you were on air force 2 with the Vice President , you spoke out, and pence told you about north korea, quote, keeping maximum pressure, but if you want to talk, well talk, quoting from your piece. Is it your understanding that this administration is open to a dialogue with north korea . Reporter yes, thats corrects. I traveled with Vice President pence in japan and south korea for five days, where publicly, he put forth a very tough message. The United States is going to increase sanctions, north koreas Charm Offensive should not be allowed to succeed, but behind the scenes, he was bargaining, negotiating with south korean president , and wants the speed skating rink, and after that, he read out the meetings on the plane ride home and said that moon and he had been able to strike an agreement on terms for moving forward with further engagement with the kim regime after the olympics, and the terms are these, the u. S. And allies will not stop increasing pressure on north korea until north korea takes verifiable steps to denuclearization. At the same time, the United States can support further engagement with the regime, first by the South Koreans, and then potentially the United States directly down the line. This is a small diplomatic window, a breakthrough, and it does not mean theres going to be negotiations. It just means the United States is ready to talk with north korea while still keeping the pressure strong. Ready to talk, though, that is that has me confused, josh, because days ago, you wrote in the Washington Post that pence told you directly, at the time, that the Trump Administration wants this warming on the Korean Peninsula to end when the olympic flame was put out. What changed . Reporter what happened is exactly what pence read out that they had some negotiations with the South Koreans in realtime, in two very important meetings privately he then told me about, so when Vice President pence arrived in south korea, they were on different pages, and they pence asked president moon inside their private meeting, why should this time be different . Why should we support engagement with north korea . Moons answer was, we wont give north korea any concessions until we see real denuclearization steps. Based on that assurance, pence decided to endorse this further engagement. Thats what he told me about on the plane ride home. Again, it doesnt mean actual negotiations or were going to solve the problem. Theres a lot of obstacles in the way. North korea could test again, sanctions are coming, that could make north korea upset, and any number of things could happen, but this is what happened behind the scenes, a fast setting detail of depliplomacy at work. Samantha, your thoughts . A small breakthrough, but not that different from what we heard at various junctures throughout the administration. Josh, im very confused by this administrations north korea policy. Sometimes we support the diplomacy, sometimes we dont. Sometimes were insisting on denuclearization, increasing pressure, and flipflopping between options, and the fact of the matter is that kim jong un is taking advantage of our incoherence so that dynamics work in his favor. Josh, you were on the road with the Vice President. It is very clear that kim jong un had a very good week. He has a lot to celebrate right now. His sister was welcomed on the olympic stage with the same honors at any other world leaders. The South Koreans and North Koreans appeared to have moved closer together, and the United States agreed not to hold military drills during the olympics, and we had almost no mention of the fact that north korea is a rogue regime pursuing multiple illegal programs throughout the course of the olympics. I think part of the diplomatic breakthrough, as were calling it, is motivated by the fact that the dynamics shiftsed. I think that kim jong un at this point is holding more of the cards than he did several months ago. A couple things in response. First of all, Vice President pence repeatedly highlighted the brutality of the north korean regime. It was his theme throughout the trip, meeting with defectors but it was not picked up by the press. He met with fred warmbier. He tried his best, but its not under his control that the press fawns over the north korean delegation. Thats what he tried to prevent, although he may not have succeeded. On the greater issue, this is not a new idea. You talked about talks that have been under discussion, what secretary of state Rex Tillerson said publicly he wants to see, but the white house endorsement of this, keep in mind, Vice President pence talked to President Trump every day is new and significant. Now, again, its totally true the administration has been somewhat inherentincoherent on policy, but at the same time, theres a diplomatic opening pushed by the south korean president , and the Trump Administration has a decision to make. They can support it under terms they can accept, which is what Vice President pence said they intend to do, or they can thumb their nose at it and stick to their line. Now, we should want, you know, peace opportunities to be taken advantage of and want diplomatic openings to succeed if we are trying to avoid war, okay, so while they are not totally consistent all the time, in the sense this is a change, theres a reason for that change, and theres an explanation for it, there was a negotiation with the South Koreans, and if the south korean u. S. Alliance that the Trump Administration is trying to bolster here, and whether or not that benefits the North Koreans is a fair debate, but eventually, you have to talk to them; and that is something that eventually, hopefully, brings them out from the cold. Quickly, sam, what would you, then, recommend for the u. S. s next move . I think the first thing that we need to do is make sure that sanctions are enforced. I think we have seen the pressure increase, and i think thats having some impact on north creigh yarks but i think we have to be really careful of entering into negotiations or talking about entering into negotiations. When the North Koreans have a history of abusing them, they have repeatedly, throughout the course of history, entered into negotiations, trying to get concessions in the front end and continued illegal activity. I think if you read the column i got to go, josh. Youll see thats what pence said, no concessions on sanctions until Real Progress on dee nuclearization. Thats exactly what the Trump Administration is doing. Thank you, both. Interesting to see what happens on the north korean policy and whether there is some kind of diplomatic discussion that happens now in the next move, so, thank you, both, josh rogan and sam, talk more another day. House intelligence chief today slammed democrats on fox news over their memo, which rebuts his memo that alleges fbi surveillance abuses. We dont know exactly whats in the democrats version because friday President Trump refused to release it calling for redactions. Now, this morning, congressman nunes accused democrats of spending their weekend in spin mode rather than working. On friday night, we received a letter back from the white house, the white house did not deny that the release of the democrats memo, but said, look, you need to make redactions and technical corrections here and itll be out right away. Now, from that point, we heard nothing but crickets. The democrats have been on tv all weekend long. Their memo is in the House Intelligence Committee down at the bottom of the capitol waiting to be redacted. If they really wanted to get it out, they would be down there all day yesterday redacting it, getting it back over to the white house so that the public can know whats in it. So so this is nothing but politics. Nunes staked his political future on questioning the fbi russia probe. That is winning some friends and some enemies in his home district where hes up for reelection. Cnns dan simon reports trump carried this california district nunes calls home by nine points, but the eightterm congressman is feeling some backlash now from his conconstituents. I think congressman nunes is a great congressman. Everything hes done, i agree with. Reporter here in this town, part of californias central valley, congressman nunes is a hero. I respect him. I think hes a great man, and i think hes done really good work. Thank you, thank you. Reporter nunes won this election easily in the last election, and while the memo declaring fbi wrong doing vilified by democrats and some in his own parties, his supporters we like the aggressiveness to do things honestly and justice. Reporter remain fiercely loyal. Hes doing a good job. Reporter she does not seem like a typical trump or nunes supporter, a mexican imgrant, shes behind both men. Only one gutsy enough to put out a memo that brings out the whole truth. Nobody, nobody wanted to do that. Reporter supporters say good luck if democrats actually think they can oust him. Have to fall pretty fall to get unseated, so from his perspective, i dont think this is going to hurt him at all. Devin nunes. Reporter these nunes opponents seem to differ. Every tuesday for a year they protest outside his district office. From those in attendance is a local prosecutor, a democrat, now running against nunes for his seat. Really nothing more than a donald trump stooge. Reporter he says hes received big money, 400,000 in contributions since the nunes memo was released on friday. The campaign also gaining attention after putting up this, a billboard showing nunes and President Trump as toddlers, under the control of vladimir putin. Its an aggressiveness he believes will make the race a competitive one and polling shows the democrat down by just five points. What do you say to the nay sayers theres no way you can beat devin nunes . Im not a political pundit, ill be out there every day talking to the supporters, but nunes is a poster boy for what is wrong in washington right now. Reporter here in central california, the nunes supporters are not budging. The controversial gop memo is making him even more popular with his base. President trump said that he should be considered a Great American hero, do you agree with that . Said that about nunes . Reporter yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, i do. I kept up with it pretty good. Reporter despite a flood of contributions and volunteers flocking to help the democratic challenger, andrew, they say at this point, it appears nunes has a safe seat, and if things got especially close, he could probably call on his good friend, donald trump, to do a Campaign Event for him to raise money for the already sizable war chest. Welcome back, lets look ahead to the weeks immigration showdown in the senate with only 21 days until dreamers, imgrants brought to the u. S. As children, have to meet the deadline. A group of senators introduced a proposal in the debate starting tomorrow. The proposal closely resembles what President Trump proposes. Theres restrictions on family based immigration and a path to citizenship for dreamers. I spoke to leon panetta and defense secretary under president obama about the looming immigration debate. So last time you and i spoke, you said a bill to protect dreamers needed to happen before the new year, and now here we are in february, were still basically in the same boat. Are you worried . I am worried because, you know, i would have thought that sense the president said this had to be fixed, since the republicans say it has to be fixed, and, certainly, the democrats have said that this has to be fixed, that it would have been fixed, that they would have found a way to resolve this issue so that 800,000 of these dreamers are not living with a fear of deportation. Now were a few weeks away from the march deadline, and we still dont have a resolution here. I hope that next week with the debate in the senate that that hopefully can lay the groundwork for some kind of compromise to be adopted so that we live up to our responsibility to these young people to protect them. Now, even some democratic lawmakers argued the dems gave up their leverage, their only real bargaining chip on daca this week by agreeing to the spending bill. How do you see it . Did they blow it . Well, i honestly thought that the best way to do if, particularly when there were a number of other issues out there, whether it was the issue of Disaster Assistance or dealing with the epidemic in our country, the opioid epidemic, or whether it was dealing with Health Care Facilities or one kind or another, there were a number of issues that were out there that were resolved as a result of this c. R. Was agreed to. It just seemed to me that that was the perfect vehicle to try to get something through. Obviously, its been its gotten increasingly controversial. The president has continued to highlight that issue on immigration, and as a result of that, i think weve got a lot of opposing sides on this issue having developed, so i i understand that ultimately they had to have a deal to try to get past another shutdown of the federal government, but theres no question now that a lot of the leverage that they had to try to really push this through, they have taken a lot of that pressure off. We are moments away from the premier of an original cnn series. The radical story u of patty hearst. This is a look at her transformation leading a quiet life to a bank robbing terrorist. Listen as her fiance described what happened the night she was kidnapped by a radical group. We had this bottle of romance wine. He grabbed one and started hitting her on the head with it really hard. Its like they were going to kill us. My eyes were full of blood. I couldnt see. I lunged out. Instead of running out the front door, i justen went running around the living room yelling at the top of my lungs, knocking over furniture, knocking over plants, just banging into things, hoping the distraction would drive them away. I hoped the door and went out on the back patio and jumped over the fence and started banging on the neighbors door. Even in my stage of delirium, i could tell they werent going to answer the door. I realized i was juster terrifying somebody inside. I assumed it was a robbery going bad. I didnt know at the time. I sat down with chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin who is is the executive producer of this series. I asked him why u the story still captivates more than 40 years after it happened. Its an incredible window into the 1970s, which was surprisingly, to me, the most violent, angry, crazy time. Even more than the 60s. Heres a fact. There were a thousand political bomb ags year in the United States. Think about that. Its almost inconceivable. Were so tuned to terrorism. And one bombing a year is traumatic in the age of isis and al qaeda. But this was a verien different era. And also a smaller media world, which didnt call attention to the bombings the way we would today. And the other reason is simply that its a mystery story. Its about one womans choices. Did pat ri hearst really join with her captors, the people who kid. Napped her, or was she coerced, forced. Its not just anyone. This is patty hearst. Talk about power in this time and place. Again, its a window into the time. Hearst was this enormous newspaper family. The great publisher was her grandfather. Newspapers were the way most people got their information in the 1970s. And there were still vast newspaper fortunes. Its a window, again, into a world thats very different from our own. So patty hearst is kidnapped. And then about two months later, she announces shes joining with her captors, pledging allegiance of sorts to the terrorist organization. Tell us about that. The Liberation Army, it was really one of the most shocking events of the decade. That this woman, who was brutally, terribly kid. Napped out of her home in california issues a communique, a tape recording and says i have decided to stay and fight. I many people may remember he e she changed her name to tonya. There were photographs of her with a machine gun. That iconic image. But even more remarkably, she is shone on a Security Camera robbing a bank in san francisco. And that symbolizes her transition from victim to perpetrator in the minds of many, but she, of course, and many, many people who support her, assert she was always a victim. Thats why this debatelingsers on. The kidnappingen wasnt just about patty hearst and who she was. But there was also political motivation during that time. S that story also about what the violent part of the counterculture was like. This was a time where the Weather Underground was around. The Liberation Army was a very small group. Much smaller than the Weather Underground. But they believed in violent political change. They were revolutionary. Instead of a ransom demand, it was that randi hearst, her father, put up millions of dollars to feed the poor of california. And the hearsts actually did that. Theres a bizarre chapter captured in this documentary where there were these big food give aways around northern california. It just showed how busineizarre story is. This is the only political kidnapping in american history. Stay tuned. Ana cabrera in new york. The radical story of patty hearst starts right now. Our first guest, patty hearst. The victim of the most bizarre kidnapping story. Kicking and screaming from her apartment, shoved into the trunk of a car. She stunned the world with the announcement she joined her captors and became a revolutionary and branded a common
