Likely going to take its first landfall over the florida keys, where that is to be determine preponderance of the evidence we have to the wait to find out how quickly that storm makes the sharp turn to the north to tell where its going to go. Its likely to go along places like naples, fort myers, into tampa and then move all inward and push into the states like georgia, alabama and tennessee. It will reintensify back to a category 4 storm. Look at how warm the water is in this region, upper 80s, that is the perfect fuel for a storm like this to be able to intensify, thats what we expect it to do before it makes landfall. Weve been hearing a lot of this. What is the timing for a lot of the citys in florida. Lets look at tampa, Tropical Storm winds will have arrived in some of these areas by tomorrow afternoon. Hurricane force winds in tampa by tomorrow evening. Rainfall could be looking at 6 to 8 inches of rain and the storm surge 5 to 8 feet. Now we move to naples, farther south, Tropical Storm winds arrive early tomorrow morning. Hurricane force could arrive shortly after sun rise on sunday. Then we talk about rainfall. This is where we could look at really heavy amounts of rain. Were talking near a foot of rain and some of the areas outside of naples could pick up 15 inches of rain. Storm surge is going to be a big factor. 10 to 15 feet nor region. Heres a look at the radar Going Forward to show you where those heavy rain bands are going to be. On sunday we expect it to cross over the kees and continue up the west coast, were talking naples, fort myers, into tampa and pushing up jacksonville into georgia. Its going to take strong winds into places like South Carolina and georgia, which is why those states have Tropical Storm watches even though we expect the storm to weaken a bit before it makes it into those areas, its not going to weaken enti entirely. They are going to get some impacts. Miami is getting the impacts and Hurricane Force winds will be arriving as early as tomorrow morning. Allison chinchar, thank you so much. Alison saying the storm starting to make that turn towards florida. So what were seeing here now, now with the high erwinds and the rains starting to come, its on. By the way, this is knot nothing compared to what it will be as the storm moves ever closer, moves past miami and up the west coast of florida. Lets go to drew griffin right now. Hes in fort myers and the shelters where people have been coming in by droves to get to safety once they heard fort myers was in the bulls eye. Drew. Thats right. And the big news here is the line is gone. They said everybody would fit, everybody is fitting. That entire line, john, that strung all the way around the building and into the parking lot, two and three times, has now diminished. These are people who were inside, theyre coming back outside getting their stuff, the and taking care of a situation with the dogs. They have all the dogs in the area and trying to figure out the owners and their dogs and how they fit into a shelter with several thousands of people. But just as the rain fell heavy they had a big push to get everybody inside. And so this shelter which can hold 8,000 still has room for more, has everybody inside. Really good news weve been watching this all day wondering how they were going to get people in. They finally did it. This shelter is ready to brace for Hurricane Irma. John. So there is room for more in that shelter. As we know fort myers got a little bit of a later start with people heading to shelters and safety because it wasnt until overnight that the impact was going to be felt so strongly there. Do you get the sense that the people who were going to move have done so already . Are there people still heading to the shelter and how much time do he have . Really the time has passed. There is capacity for people who want to come in last minute, but you have to get here on your own. The emergency bus service which was taking evacuees to shelters stopped at 3 00. What happened in fort myers was interesting. There was evacuations going on in the Barrier Islands in the zone a flood zones or surge zones but this morning is when officials in kolier and lee county extended that zone to zone b and that had people looking more carefully of where they were, where the hurricane is, and what the path could be. Thats when a lot of people made the decision to finally, listen, im going to go to a shelter. It created a big log jam. It was sort of a last minute decision, but a decision that really required it required the information that people did not get until this morning. So thats where that decision came from and thats what created a lot of consternation. But the county, state, police here have done a great job. They stood up, kept everybody calm. Minor problems, a lot of inconvenience but everybody is inside at this huge shelter. John. Thats great news, drew griffin in fort myers people inside the shelter where there is still room. So if you are listening, there is still time to get there and there will be space for you. Drew griffin thank you. Important work at that shelter all afternoon long. Lets go to Anderson Cooper who is in fort myers. A little bit of rain starting, the first rain weve seen over the last several hours. But again its not much to get the people who were Walking Around, get them scurrying for cover but again a small taste of what is to come. I should point out people in fort myers getting to shelter, the buses stopped running to shelters at 3 00. The city said they did that to allow the bus drivers help take care of their own families and deal with what they need to get to. If people are going to a shelter, the difficult is how to get there. Police say they will try to help if you call 211, but that number has been inundated throughout the day. I want to check in with miguel in punta gorda. I understand youve been watching the shelter situation there, how is it. It is filled to capacity. They have three shelters in punta gorda, all three are filled to capacity. Two are for anyone, the third was a special needs shelter so what theyre doing now, theyve established five shelters in Sarasota County, about a 20, 25 minute drive, where residents can go. This is an Elementary School here in Port Charlotte in Charlotte County, id like to talk to this gentleman. Owen jones is it. Yes. How are you, sir . Not too bad. What brings you here . When did you come here and why. I came here this morning about 7 30, 8 00. Who did you come with. My family are here, my wife is here and my sons and his family are here. And the checkin process was fine . Youre comfortable . You believe youll be fine here . Yes. Yes. Ill be fine here. How are your family doing . Are they okay. Theyre okay. Theyre very okay here. Theyre here for the hurricane. The hurricane is on everyones mind here. When you go to service stations now to try to get gas in this area, you know those zombie movies, it is like the zombie apocalyp apocalypse, you see a car, everyone pulls up, theres no gas, everyone is talking amongst themselves nervously. There is no gas to be had. Almost every store is shut. Everyone is in shelters or figuring what gas they have to get out of this area and into another care ya. The reason they have so few shelters is because it is low lands, they expect it to flood and they cant afford to put shelters in places theyd have to evacuate anyway. As a fan of zombie films, thankfully zombies do not drive. They might evolve to that, but as of now they dont know how to use a car. Thank you for that, miguel. Punta gorda, as everyone knows, charlie hit there in 2004, devastated that town. I want to go to rene, who is in washington with the administrator of fema. I know that administrator long just got out of a meeting with the Power Companies and you say you have a reality check for people in the state of florida and it doesnt look good as it relates to power. Tell me what youre expecting. Because of the trajectory from south to north and the fact theyre faorecasting it to be a category 4 hurricane, the winds that extend to the northeast side of the eye are going to pass through the state, which is going to take a lot of the Power Infrastructure out. So we could see millions of people without power in florida for multiple days, in some areas maybe weeks. So i think its important to set the expectations of citizens, this is why we ask and plead for people to be ready. What are you talking here . 6 million . 7 Million People without power. Its hard to estimate, but some of the estimates could be 5 Million People based on the south to north trajectory. Its not just florida. Its going to move into georgia as well over the next five days. Harvey was what 300,000 people. Completely different storm. Harvey was a stalled rain event that sat over texas for five days, dropped Copious Amounts of rain, this is a storm surge and an inland event that is going to wreak havoc on the system. Were working with our private sector partners in the energy sectors. They are prepositioning, pulling out all stops, going to be activating mutual aid from all over the country to come in, as soon as we can get the roadways open, well work with Governor Scott and emergency manage tomt get in and restore power as quickly as we can. But people have to understand we cant flip the lights back on. It takes a concerted efforts from the local governments all the way up. Were talking 5 million, 6 million possibly people without power for weeks at a time. Talk about the health aspects. There are a lot of elderly people in the state of florida and were talking no power. What will be the situation for those people . So my job as the coordinator of fema is basically to coordinate a unified effort across the federal government and thats what you see behind us. So we have hhs in the room, Emergency Support function aid that is working with Governor Scott and his team to identify any health and medical issues that are there. Weve been prepositioning teams to go in and support their needs to meet those demands. Youre exactly right. We have an office of disability coordination that works with access needs and trying to meet the needs and provide a standard of care for all citizens that they deserve. I want to talk about the storm overall what are you seeing now . I spoke to you earlier this morning and now hours later the storm is closer to the united states. Give me a birds eye view what the operation is and what your concern is . People in the keys, anybody that stayed behind, the time to evacuate is running out. A lot of people in southwest florida and southern florida should be making their final preparations and getting into the shelters or getting to a safe location that with stand the winds, out of a storm surge area into a facility that can handle the forecasted winds for that area. As it starts to enroach, we start to estimate and understand where our resources are going to be needed to support Governor Scotts position. Are you shifting resources in real time right now as this storm now continues to inch towards the west . Most of the commodities Life Sustaining kmcommodities le food and water have been prestaged. Were working with disaster medical teams and power crews to prestage them. But the problem is you cant move everything in and expose it to the storm or to the system. So theres going to be a time lag there. We have to wait for the system to get out. We have to be able to build not only pathways through the infrastructure to get back in. But then were working with our dod partners to get back in, particularly to the south florida area. Im going to send it back to you, anderson. To hear about that number of people potentially without power for days and days, if not weeks and again as you pointed out, a lot of elderly residents in florida, really going to be affecting them. Thats something well track a lot. A lot of folks are going to be in need throughout the state. I think thats important to remember. As many people today have seen the storm shift to the west coast to fort myers, even up to tampa where storm surge may be up to 5 feet, according to modeling this morning. This is a statewide event, and a multistate event that were going to be covering for quite some time. Were going to take a short break and be back in a moment. This is not something thats going to be passing by in an hour or two, this is going to be a multihour event. Really from Early Morning all the way through tomorrow. We, of course, have correspondents all throughout the region. I want to go to kim who is standing by in miami beach. Given the weather and the fact that the storm has moved further, or the eye has moved further to the west, are you seeing a lot of people Walking Around today miami beach . Are people tired of being inside given the fact that the rains havent been that bad . The winds havent been that bad . Its astonishing were seeing people still walk around. Were in the middle of one of the stronger bands weve felt all day and as you mentioned, a prelude of what were anticip e anticipating well see tomorrow. But people are walking sbararou and that is a huge concern, as these hotels and businesses are blocked off from the water. What we heard from the Fire Department is they are concerned because that eye is shifting west, that people will become overconfident theyll stay out, that people who may have gone to miami, further inland, will come back to the beach because were near the ocean. The storm surge is still in effect. And the Miami Beach Police department trying to under score what is happening here, put out a curfew saying from 8 00 p. M. Tonight till 7 00 a. M. Tomorrow if you are out on miami beach, you are under aarrest. The reason why the storm surge is still in effect, this is a place that floods. Theyre concerned that if people are Walking Around, if the storm surge comes in they could drown and they wouldnt have anyone to rescue you. So people Walking Around, as you said, that is a big concern. Ae anderson. I know people that were evacuated and ended up in tampa and are now saying should i go back to miami given that it looks like the eye of the storm is going to be to the west. And again its the decision that people across the state are having to make, whether to stay, go, go to a shelter, stay at home or go to a friends house that may be at a higher elevation. A lot to consider, even in the hours ahead. But as authorities have said to kyung, the window is closing to take action one way or the other. A little bit of a letup in the wind here in miami but weve been feeling the strength of these bands for some time. I took my rain jacket off in solidarity with my next guest dan owens who lives on the edge of the mandatory evacuation zone. You chose to stay, why . A lot of reasons. But my house is 8 feet above sea level. Its a secured house. Its built to the dade county building code, which are stringent and have been developed since hurricane andrew. And i have a lot of friends staying and staying to help them out immediately after the storm. A lot of people do have to evacuate, but 3 Million People cant get on the road. This storm has drifted west. It doesnt seem as if miami will get a direct hit from the eye anymore, although it feels like were going to get hurricane winds and a storm surge. Whats your sense if people are still being as careful as they need to be or ling up at all . Not at all. All of my friends ive talked to are in secure houses, theyre together, in good humor, but theyre taking it seriously. Ive never seen the Community Take it more seriously. You have to, the storm surge could be over 6 feet, on the west coast theyre talking 10 the 15 feet and for a while they were forecasting strong winds in miami. And one of the worries is these giant construction cranes, a sign of the growth of miami, but a concern because of the winds. Thats a concern. Theyre not built for category 5 storms theyre meant to spin in the wind and as they go up, theyre attached to buildings so theyre not going to wobble and fly over the city. They are designed to twist like weather vanes. Its disconcerting when you see that boom move but people know its supposed to move. Its supposed to move. Theyre going to spin and hopefully theyll be fine. As a florida yans what do you think. Its taken a turn, the west coast was in a cone, but theres more danger than anticipated. I had friends who evacuated to naples and tampa, now they ear there. What im taking from it is the spirit of miami and how great everybody is, the good spirits and wanting to help each other out. My neighbors have been great. Were a Diverse Community and everybody has each others backs and its a wonderful thing to be a part of and feel. Its a nice break from our daily american politics. Youre going to need the positive spirit you have right now after tomorrow to havetohelp people recover and rebuild. After youre done talking to me here youre going to go home and stay home. What are your plans. Im going to go home, eat a lot of ice cream before the power goes out and watch reruns of parks and reck and hang out. We have people volunteering to help with the duty of eating the ice cream. It was great to have you here, dan. Please stay safe. We are seeing the bands raining, a little bit here its going to be raining much harder. The wind gusts have been coming through. I think im going to Alison Chinchar to get a sense of the latest of Hurricane Irma. At the top of the hour we got our latest update and the biggest thing we noticed that changed was the direction of the storm as a whole, now going from due west to slightly north. Which means this could be the final straw before we see this thing take the sharp turn to the north. Winds are still about 125 Miles Per Hour, about 5 miles off of being a category 4. We do expect it to go back up in strength to a category 4 before making its way to the keys and going up the peninsula. People want to know why its making such a sharp turn . Because in theory thats the track its been tacking its life. Theres a few things you need to understand. What has been steering it the last few days is the High Pressure south of bermuda. But once it gets far enough west its going to interact with this High Pressure system off the coast of texas. Thats going to block it from going into the gulf. Its going to slide up the peninsula and then this High Pressure is going to push out of the way, allowing that storm, to really be able to push pretty far inland into portions of kentucky or tennessee. So thats where most of the steering with the storm is going to come into play. In terms of the biggest impacts, winds are going to be one of the top ones. This information coming to us from the National Weather service. This is going to be the peak wind gusts, 135 around key west, 134 in fort myers, 132 in tampa. These are new numbers. The highest number we saw was in excess of 140 Miles Per Hour, potentially along the western edge of florida. Storm surge also going to be a big threat as well. Around miami were looking at 4 to 6 feet. Areas of key west, 5 to 10 feet. Naples, 10 to 15 feet. So thats going to be the highest point. But as you go further north, places like tampa could look at 5 to 8 feet. So you have to understand what this means in terms of real scale things. Take a home. If you talk about storm surge thats 5 to 10 feet, not only does it cover at least human beings but at the 10 feet point youve entirely covered the first story of a building. In some cases were talking 15 feet, that creeps into the second story of a home. But the other thing you have to keep in mind too are the waves that are mixed in. This is where you get big innone designation. The other thing to note, its not just the water. Its everything the water has taken out. So you have strong currents from the waves that could be knocking things around and adding higher onto the crests, but you have the debris that will be in here. Not just on the surface but that could mixed in lower. So if youre in a car, Walking Around trying to get places in the storm surge, those can hit you and you cant see them. So this again one of the many reasons why you should not be out when this storm surge hits its peak because it can be incredibly dangerous and deadly. Alison chinchar thank you. Hopefully people are Higher Ground and evacuated before that storm surge is an issue. Allison reported that storm has made the turn. That means if you are in the florida keys, watch out. Its been a long day. Ive been out here for about five hours. Theres so many things to consider for Law Enforcement for Emergency Personnel when dealing and preparing for a hurricane, particularly of this size. And weve talked about people who have medical needs, even prescription drugs their access to that if the power goes out, if businesses are shut down. Theres a lot to think about and people are bringing their pets to shelters, which is a big change since hurricane katrina, people evacuating and not allowed to bring their pets. We wanted to along into the zoos here in florida and what they do with their animals. Ron mcgill is with zoo miami, how are you dealing with Something Like this . No matter where the storm goes, what do you do with the animals . We dont evacuate them from the zoo. Storms can change direction at the last section and youre evacuating into the storm. A lot of people think they evacuate their dogs and cats and horses, these are animals that are used to it. These are wild animals, moving it from their home can be more stressful than the storm itself. Ive been at the zoo for 30 years. I went through hurricane andrew which levelled the zoo. We have some pictures of that were going to show. Yeah, yeah. We have pictures of hurricane andrew. We had animals, we had the fla me flamin goes in the bathrooms. It was successful, but since that hurricane levelled the entire zoo, we rebuilt it understanding hurricanes are part of our lives so we have these buildings in the zoo that we move the animals into. And most of the animals stay in their exhibits because things like lions and gorillas, tigers, elephants, theyre held in areas Strong Enough to sustain the animal itself and so to survive the hurricane, we know theyre a good place to bunker the animals in. The small animals we put them in small enclosures and move those into the buildings. So its key to reduce stress on them as much as possible. Absolutely. People dont realize. We would evacuate if we were in a flood zone. With floods and a storm surge you have nowhere to put the animals because theyll drowned. Its just like people in hurricanes you dont evacuate because of wind, you evacuate because of storm surge and flooding. I appreciate all your efforts and well want to check in with you at the end of this just to make sure everything ends up already. Thanks so much ron. But it has been calm in a lot of parts of florida today, here in fort myers other than occasional bands of rains over the last hour or so its been sunny outside, folks have been Walking Around. But they know based on the new tracking we got this morning that this storm has moved west of fort myers, naples, tampa, all are in the line of sight of this. Were watching to see if theres any movement in this storm because that could have a big difference. I want to bring in randy kay. Youve been driving around and one of the things in fort myers a lot of people thought they were going to ride it out. And now that it shifted west they theyre going to shelters. We were able to stop by a shelter and there were so many people out there. We were going up 75 north and there was this massive people, and so we jumped off and it turned out it was germane arena, its a hockey arena. Some of them be had been there since 10 00 and they were there to seek shelter because they saw the storm shift, so they were there with their dogs, children, one guy had a yoga mat to sleep on, one guy with a prosthetic leg, elderly waiting with, it was a difficult scene but they were all hoping to seek shelter there instead of their homes. We talked to a few of them, and heres a sampling of what we heard. It changed the itinerary every time we looked at the map. Should we go to atlanta . No stay at my cousins house . No. Do you feel like you waited too long to decide. I wanted to leave on monday. If its the biggest hurricane ever, just leave and youre not stuck. Gas was great on monday. How long have you been waiting in line . About four hours. Its a long wait. Is this your only hope for shelter with irma. Animals . Yeah. Things are closing fast. I came with my elderly neighbor, whos 87. He couldnt walk well, so he went to the front of the line. I hoped to somehow find him in there. Thankfully the weather was okay. I mean, it was hot obviously. And miserable. But it wasnt pouring rain for the people waiting for hours. No it was cool and overcast, because the storm is coming. A lot of them were just seated and wondering and there was the National Guard there. So we asked them we interviewed lieutenant boy know and he told us it holds about 8,000 people. There were about 1,000 inside so it had plenty of room which is great news. Because the line wrapped all as you saw wrapped all the way around the parking lot. He said that they have security inside. The National Guard will be there. They have food, water. Air conditioning. So hopefully, it will be a good place for all of these folks to ride it out. Last we heard from drew griffin whos there, that there is still room. The problem of course is getting there for people. Because the public shuttles those shut down hours ago. Right. We looked at the parking lot and thats pretty full as well. But the question is though these people have been waiting in line four, five, six hours. You wonder why didnt they leave town before that, if you can drive four or five or six hours you can get away from it. But it was a tough situation to see. So i hope they get inside and theyre all safe. Yeah. Theres so many considerations when youre thinking about evacuating your pets, medicine. Your loved ones. Gasoline. Just the fear of being on the highway. Getting stuck in traffic. Things like that. Randy, thanks for that. More on that tonight in our coverage. Well take another short break and be right back. The worry for our meteorologist, the storm has started to make that northward turn which means the keys, very much on target right now and then the west of florida, thousands of people told to evacuate and in some cases they just made the decision to go this morning. Our Miguel Marquez is in Port Charlotte and i understand that the shelter youre at right now, filled to capacity. Reporter it is filled to capacity. All of the shelters. There are only three in Charlotte County are filled to capacity i should point out this is just north of punta gorda which is in Charlotte County. They took a direct hit by charlie 13 years ago. And was absolutely levelled by it. And the path that this hurricane that irma is on right now is very, very similar to it. This is kings way Elementary School. Give you a sense of theres about 900 people in here now. A lot of people hanging out. Right now its literally the calm before the storm. Its not so terrible. But you can see how they have literally packed people in. They have parked up on the grass here at the Elementary School. They are turning people away but there are five other shelters in Sarasota County that they can bring people into or theyre directing them to for the use, for residents from Charlotte County. So i want to bring in trish sturgis the manager here at kings way. How have you managed today . How many people have you had and what sort of waves did they come in . We started real early this morning and theyre coming in fast and furious this morning. We had to take a lull for a little bit. Count how many spaces we had and reopen numerous more. We are at 943. This is an Elementary School. You moved into the cafeteria. Did you have to open more space in the school . Yeah, we started in the cafeteria with the open area in there. We then opened to back corridors that had safe passage. Then eventually we had to open the full upper level. Theres absolutely zero gas out there. If someone shows up at your door, and is utterly desperate what do you do . Half an hour ago we had a couple out of naples. They were headed north. They ran out of gas. They came off the highway looking for a place. We have them in, set up for the night here. Obviously we cant turn someone like that away. Charlie hit here. This one, the path changed in the last 48 hours. It looks like a direct whats going through your mind as youre preparing for this storm and the responsibility of all of these souls in here . For me its keeping a real positive atmosphere in there. Theyre going to be scared. The ones who have been here through andrew and they talk all of the different storms and their experiences so as long as we can keep it happy and positive, then im doing what i need to do. All right. Keeping it happy in Port Charlotte. Thank you very much and good luck. I appreciate it. They i mean, tonight its going to get worse. Tomorrow its going to be even worse when that wind is howling. She gets a round of applause. Then we will see how happy things are. But for now, people are up and ready for the storm. Miguel marquez in Port Charlotte. The governor of florida rick scott said they need nurses and volunteers to help out in the shelters. So many people answered the call and miguel, thank you. We have an important forecast update, seconds away. Cnns special live coverage continues right now. John, thanks very. Im Anderson Cooper in the west of florida, fort meyers where people woke up today with a very different anticipation of the days ahead. As the storm moved to the west but as john berman mentioned we have an important update. The latest, the 5 00 update, the track of the storm and as soon as that comes through well go to Allison Chinchar. People in florida are watching this very closely because as we saw with hurricane charlie back in 2004 it was moving up this river and a slight i think it was a four degree shift made it hit the town of punta gorda. Not the areas that people had anticipated. Lets go to Allison Chinchar with the latest on the storm. What have you learned from the 5 00 update. So the latest we have, we are continuing to see it turn toward the north and we expected it to do this. We know it will make that turn to basically almost all northward movement. Its still moving at about nine Miles Per Hour so its relatively slow. But we maybe expect to see the increase in the wind speed in next advisory because the pressure has started to drop
