Nick robertson is there and cnn alex marquart. Isis is claiming responsibility for this attack. How are they making this claim and what role are they saying they played. Well theyre making it on a website they used before. They put no they put forward no sort of details on how they could make this claim credible. Theres nothing there that makes the claim credible. They havent mentioned the names, or put faces up. They havent put statements forward from these people. You have to clook look at this claim by isis and put it to one side and way for the police investigation. The police say the investigation is moving with speed and they believe they are able to identify these three attacks. They raided four premises in the east of london. They arrest ed 12 people. One has been released. Significantly 7 of them were women. If you look at the ages of the people who. Reporter arrested and the Police Released those ages there were six people there three male three female in the mid to late 50s. One was 60. With a weve seen before after attacks like this the police raid the premises where the attackers were living. It appears that maybe what they have done this time. Theyre still not releases the identity of the attackers. This is the third terror attack in three months what is the response from the theresa may government . Theresa may says this is a new type of terrorism. We have to combat in the new way. We must have Difficult Conversations in communities where she said extremism is tolerated. She wants to see increased military strikes on the areas isis operates iraq and syria. She wants to close down the internet space where isis is able to recruit people. She wants to put International Pressure on Internet Service providers, social Media Companies she said should work harder to prevent extreme is groups. The other thing she said and this will resonate with her base in britain she wants stronger legislation for the police and Intelligence Services because she says this Terror Threat has changed. Therefore the way britain needs to tackle it must change. That could mean tougher legislation. Nick robertson thank you. There was chaos, confusion all around london especially on London Bridge last night during the attacks. One man talked with Becky Anderson what he saw when he came upon the scene shortly after the violence be gn. As i drove closer towards the incident i saw a man lying on the floor. He was krad led by another man and had blood on his chest. At first it looked like an accident. As i moved closer towards him i could tell the blood was concentrated in his chest area. It looked like he had been stabbed. I saw another person lying down next to him. They had covered his head with a blanket. It looked like this guy may have died. We were stuck there for around 30 minutes or so. We have werent moving. There was a lot of commotion. People were going crazy. The police seemed calm at the time. It was only subsequently i saw quite a lot of police. They were chasing people across the bridge. This was civilians and screaming at them to run run run for your lives. 48 people were wounded in these attacks 36 remain in the hospital 21 people in critical condition. Cnns Senior Correspondent is near London Bridge. What are you learning about the victims . Most of the people who were wounded are still in the hospital. 21 in critical condition. That means the death toll that stands at 7 could potentially rice. Were not being told too much about the identities of those still in the hospital. Of the wounded. We are starting to hear some of their stories including one British Transportation Police officer who according to his boss stood down and went after the attackers with just his baton. He had been on the job for two years an tonight being commended for his courage. Cnn also spoke one mother of one of the wounded who said her son daniel is struggling with what happened. He stepped outside the pub for a second. A man ran up to him and said this is for my family, for islam. Looked him straight in the face and stabbed him. Daniel pulled back. Then he went into the pub. He wasnt aware he had been stabbed. There were shouts for everybody to get down on the floor. Then they had to go downstairs into the pub. His friends had a torn ket on him. They were holding pressure. Brought him downstairs. Parts of it he doesnt re. When the police came, two Police Officers had him in the back of the car. If it wasnt for his friends quick action and for the police who have been absolutely fantastic and i thank god to them all night daniel i dont think daniel would be here. Elizabeth oneal also telling cnn that daniel is suffering from survivorers guilt. Elizabeth would like to meet the Police Officers to thank them. A fum few numbers i want to bring. Three attackers theyre all dead. Seven people walking on London Bridge theyre also dead. Dozens people hurt many critically. Police in london are working to figure out their connection to the attackers and if they played any part in the terror. Former secret Service Agent is here. Jonathan on a place like london on a saturday night people arent thinking this will happen. It comes at a time theyre using a van and knives. How on earth do you stop that from happening . These are very dynamic situationings. Law enforcement is looking and searching for a way to respond to this changing face and changing tactics of terrorism. If i couldnt look back at the last six months were seeing vehicles being weapon niced. We were seeing knives for terror. This is the third attack in great britain. Look at what happened in niece the truck attack there. The face of terrorism is changing. The tactics are changes. Law enforcement needs the tools an intelligence to counter that. Juliette these attackers killed 7 people. They rented a truck and used knives. In isis is to blame for this they claim responsibility theres no proof does it Say Something about the state of that group that theyve gone low tech with this attack. I think theyve gone all tech at this stage. If you put a lot of attacks going on during ramadan not just in the west in iraq and elsewhere youre seeing high tech, low tech, easy, coordinated, lone wolf. It really is all of the above. What that means is of course from the perspective of Law Enforcement and Public Safety you dont exactly know what the threat is youre looking for. London was as we were saying last night it was you know it was orchestrated among three men. All they had to do was buy a car and get some knives. Thats coordinated but not lone wolf. Thats the challenge right now. Youre going to have to minimize the risk in these big public spaces. Know you cannot make soft targets hard and also as weve been talking about really focus on the response capabilities of Police Officers, ambulances, public health. The response of police Law Enforcement has been widely praised. Youve know what its like to mitigate risk. How do you prevent Something Like this . Obviously these individuals were able to do what they did in the preparation under the radar. Anybody can rent a truck and purchase knives. Law enforcement is on their heels. Theyre reactive to situations. They have to become more pro action. Through legislation have more intelligence gatherering capabilities to get ahead of these identified threats. Listen we know the tactics are changing. Last six months have prove that. They need every single resource available to them to identify these vulnerabilities and develop mitigation plans. Protection of soft targets how do we do it. In times square we saw a car ram into a sidewalk. It wasnt terrorism but it speaks to protecting soft targets and allowing police to have every resource available. We talk about resources theresa may the british mime minute laid out some potential solutions in her mind. We need to regulate cyber space. She talked about britain potentially changing some of the laws to be able to more aggressively go after these attackers including longer detention for terror suspects. Juliette, do you think those types of things would be effective . It simply depends. To say that you need to use give Law Enforcement every available resource it doesnt work that way. One of the reasons why Law Enforcement doesnt have all the tools they would necessarily want people have a right to privacy and right to assembly. Part of the challenge is to figure out what stage do you want to give the government authorities. I will say theresa may gave more of a political speech than policy speech. I dont know what she meant by we need she said enough is enough. I think that was maybe just a cue. I think one of the reasons United States or britain doesnt give officers all the resources is because of counter veiling needs and policies. We cant say because of a terrorism incident we have to give them all the tools they need. We have to support Law Enforcement but we have to realize these are legal democracies with people with the expectation of privacy and freedom of speech and religion. Thats a challenge we have in this country. Its not unique today. Isis doesnt post the same threat that nuclear arm ge donor the nazis did last century. I think thats the challenge. We have to leave it there. Thank you both for being with us. Now despite the horrible attack in Central London there has been this beautiful benefit concert by the people affected by the other attack in england at the Ariana Grande concert. We saw very heavily armed officers patrolling on foot who were here just in case someone tried to interfere with this ent. No one did. It was a very powerful statement against the types of violence seen in manchester and more recently in london as well. Phil black thank you. In the wake of the London Attack the president s response on twitter has many crying foul. Well tell you what he said and the reaction next. Youre live in the cnn news room. Embarrassing, cold, heart less. Those are just some of the words being used to dwiep President Trumps reaction to the london terror attack. His response began shortly after the incident when the president tweeted this. We need to be smart vilk lant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. Today President Trump went on to call out the mayor of london. At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and mayor of london says theres no reason to be alarmed. The president s tweet confused what the mayor said. Londoners will see an increased Police Presence today and over the course of the next few days. No reason to be alarmed. One of the things we need to do is make sure were as safe as we can be. Joining me to talk about the president s reaction to the attack david rhodes. A new piece of yours what donald trump can do to stop terrorism less talk. Its a reference to some of the things you reference there. Let me be clear about one thing. This message hes getting out there needs to be a travel ban which is about muslims and then he attacks the mayor of london who is the most prominent muslim mayor in the world. Hes playing on division which is wrong. I talked to some Counter Terrorism people and they say this ban would help muslim recruiting. You think its dangerous. I do. Whats odd about this is the sort of constant attack and push back of Political Correctness and his veiled krcriticisms of europe. He seems much friendlier with sort of auto kra tick rulers. Its unusual and hes using this attack for political purposes. That was very unusual. There was a huge backlash coming from britain about this tweet he sent out in particular the one concerning the mayor khan. Bren don cox wrote this you represent the worst of your country. Khan represents some of the best of ours. The conservative politician tweeted transcript of khans interview. Another politician went on to say President Trumps state visit should be canceled. There is this fierce response it seems like against President Trump. What message are people and World Leaders around the world getting from these tweets . Well, in his defense hes trying to become ba tv and elevate the issue. He deserves credit. There needs to be some new approaches to dealing with extremism. Be divisive point scoring doesnt help. Terrorism is designed to divide us along religious lines but along political lines. Theres no great vision hes offering. I dont think its constructive. You talk about what politics what he tweeted out. Voters a lot of people that support him like hes not pc. Again, the bottom line in what hes saying is muslims. Hes not saying it overtly but thats the signal. He did it repeatedly throughout the campaign. Some of his best advisers asked him not to general mcmaster. Personally its not an effective Counter Terrorism. Could it have an impact on the travel ban and this executive order . It might. Terrorism sparks fear and people might support the ban more. Its not a solution. Its an easy answer well just block everyone from coming in. It looks like these were residents of britain maybe citizens. There is no Silver Bullet for ending terrorism. These are political hits. The president has not appointed a uk ambassador. In fact the person currently in that position responded in a mouch different way than the president almost contradicting his tweet about mayor khan. Cause that make a difference. It does. An ex efgtly plot is Counter Terrorism. You have to have other efforts. You have to interact with muslim communities. Prime minister may talked about that. She talked about respectful conversations about whats going on. You need some military force, diplomacy and interact with muslim communities in the west. Its not just tweeting things that sound tough. David thank you. Nice to see you. When it comes to the russia investigation. One senator says theres a lot of smoke but no smoking gun. It will be the first time we hear from comey since the president fired him. One thing we expect to hear about are the private discussions he had with President Trump. Youll recall during those discussions the president reportedly asked comey for loyalty. He also is reportedly to have said comey should drop the investigation into michael flynn. Lets talking about what we can expect and the impact it may have. Joining us via skype juliette kie january. Thanks for coming back. Comey reportedly has these memos notes he made after every meeting with the president. Do you think hell bring those with him . He has a story to tell. People have to remember comey became a household name during the Bush Administration for something very similar in which he took on his bosses and elders. This was related to some provisions of the pay tri yot act during the war n terror. He had compelling testimony. Comey knows how to tell a story. I wouldnt call him a show boat but he knows how to tell a narrative. It will be very difficult for the white house to excuse lets put it that way. Democrats are likely to press comey about the request President Trump made and whether he saw this as obstruction of justice. What if comey says yes . Then it becomes part of the special prosecutors case. Mueller has a mandate. Hes looking at people in the white house now and he will look at the over all obstruction of Justice Charges. Whatever comey says of course comey has to be held to because hes going to say it under oath in front of a senate hearing. Nonetheless it would be something mueller would look into. One thing we have to remember however comey perceived whatever President Trump was saying to him as a legal matter we all know as a political matter and i think as a sort of as a m matter of constitutional normal President Trump shouldnt have said that to comey. Whether joking or fry trying to figure out where things are never should be in a position where they can be accused of evading justice and evading an objective investigation. To me its less interesting how comey felt or perceived it than what the facts are about what President Trump said to him. You talked about Robert Mueller the special counsel. Were learning he and comey talked about the parameters about comeys testimony before congress. What does that tell you the fact hes testifying after speak wg mueller what does that tell you. He wants to insure he doesnt disrupt or undermine any piece of the case that mueller thinks he might be able to bring. To the extent there might be obstruction of Justice Charges he wants to insure that whatever. Com is whatever comey is going to disclose there cant be a story in front of the senate and a story later on if theres an obstruction of justice charge. Thats what was going on between mueller and comey. There was nothing nefarious. I have confidence mueller thought comey could go forward and make a presentation to the senate about the obstruction of Justice Charges the statement made to trump and mueller could protect whatever case hes able to bring. Remember obstruction of justice would not just apply to President Trump. Thats only one piece. Mueller would be able to look at obstruction of justice against any other white house person, including the white House Counsel including Jared Kushner and any others who might have been involved in undermining this investigation. Put on your seat beltings. I have to be honest with you. Having seen comey testify before i dont think hes going to disappoint. All right julia thank you. The fall out from the president s announcement that he was pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord continues. Former secretary of state john kerry is blasting that decision. He said america unilaterally seeded its global leadership. En george h. W. Bush pushed in the direction of the paris accord. Kerry mocked claims he would look to a new groemt more fofrable to the u. S. When donald trump say toss the world were going to negotiate a better deal hes going to go out and find a better deal. Thats like o. J. Simpson saying hes going to go find the real killer. Everyone knows hes not doing that because he doesnt believe in it. If he did, you wouldnt pull out of paris. As we continue to follow whats happening in london we now know the city is still on alert. The raids continue. People are under arrest and the city is heart broken. People fleeing for their lives. New images from the scene as the police were looking for the as say lants. Youre live in the cnn news room. That country into chaos. Heres a look at how it unfolded. I was on London Bridge. What i saw was a van coming across London Bridge at high speeds swerving on and off the pavement. It knocked over several people, came within about 20 yards of where i was. It knocked somebody nearly 20 feet in the year. We saw a car and bodies being flipped into the air. In my line of sight there were five or six bodies of people not moving. About five or ten minutes later i heard quite a lot of gunfire. Probably about six or seven times we i literally turned around and there was three men standing there. They are stabbing people. A lot of panic and commotion. A lot. Just a lot of people taking out from their homes and some were bare toot. Suddenly i hear kind of police shouting. So i think i keep my head down and i turn around and theres a heavy Police Presence pushing two maybe three guys up against the wall. People were running away as fast as they could and taking direction from the police to the best of their abilities. Still ahead in the newsroom, i sat down with Anthony Bourdain ahead of his new episode and asked about his memorable moments from that trip. Where the tightly knit community of cooks and scientists gather to explore the art of pure science. Looking for something called facts. Remember them . The last unspoiled place on earth. Pretty amazing scenery. I sat down with bourdain to hear more about this adventure of a lifetime, as he called it, and to find out what drew him to such an isolated place. First, i wanted to see the last unspoiled continent on earth. Through the International Treaty there, theres not a single cigarette butt on that entire continent. All the people who work down there are rigorous in their impact on the environment. But there is there are people and there is a subculture of the major we spent much of our time either working out of the station, which is a community of between 600 and 1,000 people all working to support pure science. So you have people from all walks of life choosing to live down there six is months out of the year in either total darkness or constant sun working 12hour shifts in a variety of fairly physical jobs understanding that it they are there to support sol pretty esoteric research into the microbiology of the past ten centuries or black holes, sun flares, penguin behaviors, pure science is being practiced down there at a time when pure science is less popular than ever and it is a true, noble pursuit. When you see that many people working in congress together in pursuit of that science, it is a beautiful and i think people would be really surprised to see this community. You took a few field trips while you were there. What was the most amazing experience . The south pole was Pretty Amazing living in outer space. Maybe colder. But it was an area called the dry valleys which is 1 of the total land mass. And its completely devoid of snow or ice. It looks like the surface of mars.
