Independence day in ukraine, but this year the holiday qcome with a sense of dread but also defiance. And the shock and awe with ukrainian resistance. Live from london, this is cnn newsroom owith max foster. It is wednesday, august 24. In florida, voters have spoken and results are in for the last primary races this month. Both states are seeing the aftermath of messy redistricting which will now set the stage for the midterm elections. One of the most powerful democrats in the u. S. Congress wont be heading back to capitol hill next year. The newly drawn new york congressional map created a contentious matchup between incumbent jerry nadler and carolyn maloney. And cnn projects nadler will win the district ending maloneys three decades in congress. He beat not just maloney but also newcomer patel. We new yorkers dont know how to surrender. New yorkers stand up and fight. When it comes to unpacking our Supreme Court, im going to stand up and fight. Were going to end the scorurge of gun violence in america because well stand up and fight. Were going to restore Abortion Access across our entire nation. Im going to stand up and fight to protect and expand our other fundamental rights too. In Florida Democratic voters have chosen val demings to take on marco rubio. Demings is hoping anger over abortion rights will sway voters. I dream of an america where we protect Constitutional Rights like a womans right to choose ive said it along this campaign trail, let me say it again, were not going back. Were not. The race for Florida Governor is also set. Cnn projects Charlie Crist will win the democratic primary and take on incumbent republican ron desantis. Leeyla santiago has those details. Reporter Charlie Crist declaring the victory and i got to tell you, i had an Interesting Exchange with one of the staffers who said i dont plan to get any rest tonight because now the real work begins. As they go head to head with governor ron desantis, a rising star for the Republican Party that is widely seen as a potential gop president ial nominee. So it did not take long for crist to go after desantis when he hit the stage. Listen. Make no mistake about it, because this guy wants to be president of the United States of america and Everybody Knows it. However, when we defeat him on november 8, that show is over. Enough. Reporter but for crist, it is obvious that it was not just about attacking Governor Desantis but still trying to energize that base, trying to get democrats excited about some of the issues that he sees as important. Highlighting many that are central to what have become culture wars here in florida talking about abortion, the lgbtq community, education, voting rights, all of those mentioned in his victory speech and will likely remain central in his campaign as he moves forward. Leyla santiago, cnn, st. Petersburg, florida. Republican voters in oklahoma have chosen mark mullen to fill the seat of jim imhoff. No candidate got a majority in the first round of voting prompting tuesdays special election. So it feels good to get this primary over with, but keep in mind, were regional champs right now. Were not state champs. We still got to go take on those nazis. Were going to win it. Washington, d. C. Has no business influencing us. We need to be influencing washington, d. C. And if were going to take that fight former President Trump endorsed mullin. And he said in congress he fought the liberals trying to stop President Trump. Former u. S. President trumps lawsuit seeming from the search of his home is getting pushback from a federal judge. The judge has set a friday dead liar for trumps lawyers to clarify their request for a special master to review evidence seized by the fbi. This is as were learning about hundreds of classified documents recovered from maralago in january. Evan perez has more from washington. Reporter more than 100 documents marked classified, more than 700 pages in total, that is how much Sensitive Information the National Archives says was found when it examined 15 boxes of documents retrieved from Donald Trumps palm beach estate. That information all comes from a letter that the archives sent to the former president s legal team back in may and made public on tuesday. The letter was sent to inform the former president s team that after more than a month of delay requested by trump, the damage assessment, some labeled special access programs, some of the most closely guarded u. S. Government secrets and they had been stored in an unsecure room at trumps beach house. The letter makes clear that despite ump theres claim that he is the victim of political persecution, the Biden Administration has given trump a great deal of did heferential treatment. He had said he wanted to assert privilege. But archives let the fbi exam the documents and that led to the criminal investigation and the unprecedented search of maralago just over two weeks ago. Evan perez, cnn, washington. And were getting a better sense of the time line leading up to the search of maralago. It started in january when the National Archives team removed documents from trumps florida home. By late april, trumps team used legal moves to stall efforts to hand over more classified materials. This ultimately led to the fbi search on august 8 which trumps lawyers now want a neutral third party to review. But as weve reported, that legal tactic is getting pushback from a federal judge. Here is cnns legal analyst norm i i izen. How many doovers that you get, when you look at everything that has become public, you get to what the government has written about in some of these papers and that is the willful Withholding National defense information and the pattern of concealment. And that gets prosecutors and judges and jurors pretty exercised. So i think it is that pattern that creates criminal peril for donald trump. The highly classified documents in maralago raising all kinds of alarms about potential security threats to the u. S. And its allies. Here is james clapper, former director of National Intel intelligence, explaining what is at stake if the materials land in the wrong hands. The problem of course is that these documents essentially have been out of control since they left the white house. And they are not under any had not been under any kind of secure physical arrangement and there are exacting standards for that in the government. So potentially this is quite damaging. And what i think the Intelligence Community will be looking at is an assessment of what a sophisticated adversary, meaning russia or china, could do if in fact they gained access to those documents. And clearly maralago has to have been a target for, i suspect, many foreign intelligence services. So this is potentially quite concerning. James clapper there. Of course well bring you the latest on that story as it develops. Just in, a shocking ruling from a u. S. Federal judge in texas aimed at further res restricting abortion rights in the u. S. Before the request of the state of texas of a trump appointed judge has blocked guidance from the health and Human Services department that says medical providers are required to provide emergency Abortion Related Services even if those actions violate state law, meaning texas wants to make it even more difficult for women to end unwanted pregnancies even when their own lives are at risk. The ruling comes just two nts nos after the u. S. Streak decision to overturn roe v. Wade, the case that guaranteed federal abortion rights. U. S. Military says it has carried out precision airstrikes on groups in syria. President biden ordered the strikes on the bingers used by groups tied to irans Islamic Revolutionary guard corps. A u. S. Central command says no one was killed. Lets bring in Salma Abdelaziz who is following all of this. This was in response to some attacks near the u. S. Base . Absolutely. The u. S. Is describing it as retal retaliatory, they say it is in response to something that happened on august 15. Lets go to around 4 00 a. M. This morning according to sources on the ground, multiple precision strikes on the bunkers that were being used by a militant group on the ground, this is a group backed by the revolutionary guard, the United States saying the bunkers were being used for Logistical Support to house weapons and essentially what they wanted to do is to degrade irans capabilities inside syria. They say the intention was not to kill anyone on the ground, and that they were successful in that, there is no death toll, but we havent heard from iran itself. Tehran has yet to respond to the attack on the ground. But again, i describe this as retaliatory. On august 15, there was an attack along the border with iraq, a really important outpost for the United States where there is u. S. Personnel based alongside their allies. Basically on august 15 they were hit with multiple rockets and drone strikes. And while these strikes, the ones that happened yesterday in the early hours of this morning, while this base was not necessarily involved in the august 15 attack, the message from the United States is clear, youve crossed a red line, iran and its allies can not attack the United States. There is about 900 u. S. Soldiers still on the ground in syria, they cannot attack those without expecting a response. And Something Else to keep in mind. I know this is complicated. But away from the battleground, there is something seriously important happening and that is the attempt to revive the nuclear deal that President Trump pulled out of. So the question now, with this at this tit for tat, does this stop for months. There has been push by the eu, by the United States, by other countries to try to revive these. There were positive signs this week. Will it impact this. And we still need to hear from tehran. Salma, thank you. In the coming hours were expecting a major announcement from the u. S. President that could impact millions of americans with Student Loan Debt. Student has learned that the white house may cancel up to 10,000 in Student Loan Debt per borrower under certain conditions. Jeremy diamond as the details on that. Reporter after months of deliberations, President Biden on wednesday is set to announce his decision on student loan forgiveness, this is something that has been hotly debated inside the administration for months now and according to multiple sources familiar with the plan, this is what the contours of President Bidens announcement appear to be. Again, the final decision hasnt yet officially been made at this hour, but it does appear that the president is expected to forgive 10,000 of student debt per borrower for individuals making less than 125,000 per year. There are also discussions of additional loan forgiveness for specific groups like pell grant recipients, those are some of the most financially in need individuals. And then the white house is also leaning towards a final short Term Extension of that student loan repayments moratorium which has been in place since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, a final short Term Extension is also expected along with this decision. Now, President Bidens decision here will certainly draw him some praise for those who have been calling for this kind of student loan forgiveness for a long time now, but it will also draw criticism from different sides within his party as well. Some democratic leaning economists are saying that forgiving 10,000 of student lob loan per borrower will add to the deficit and increase inflation. But on the left there are some saying that 10,000 just simply isnt going far enough. Jeremy diamond, cnn, the white house. Still ahead, ukraine is marking Independence Day while in a fight for its very existence. We look at where the war stands right now six months after russias invasion. Plus american drivers have a reason to smile next time they fill up at the pump. Gas prices are one of the longest streaks of continuous declines in decades. Zapping millions of germs in seconds. For that oneofakind whoa. Which leaves you feeling. Ahhhhhhh listerine. Feel the whoa at least 147 cities an counties across china are under red heat alert warnings as the country continues to struggle under a swell tering heatwave. And this tributary is nearly dried up from the drought conditions. Temperatures in the red alert areas are expected to exceed 40 degrees celsius, that is more than 104 farenheit. Governor of texas has signed a declaration for almost two dozen counties. The heavy rain is some of the worst the area has ever seen. This is the wettest august on record for dallas according to the National Weather service. One fire service says it has been a summer of extremes for the state. Ive been on the job for around almost 20 years now. In tooeexas, you know, it seems like were either in some type of drought or grass fires which we were experiencing before the floods came in and then the torrential rains. Now the rain is moving to the east putting more states at risk of flooding. Meteorologist Pedram Javaheri is joining us from the weather center. Good seeing you. Of course the concern has been so much on texas and that heavy rainfall we saw, the energy as you noted is shifting eastward and south of this region, but the pattern that set the stage for this heavy rainfall, it is still in place. So we do expect another round of heavy rains. Maybe not as much as we saw monday, but 2 to 4 inches has come down across louisiana, arkansas and the state of mississippi. And you look being at this hyper focused area and a couple pockets do pop out indicated in the reds and oranges, 5 to 6 inches in isolated areas. So plenty of rains have fallen east of the area that was hardest hit in dallas metro. And you look at the radar imagery, notice the density of storms popping up just to the north and east of jackson, mississippi, precisely where we have Flood Warnings in place that have been in place the last hour or so as a result of these heavy rains. Notice well to the west and back towards areas of far eastern texas, still seeing flood alerts in place there and some flood alerts could pop up. In houston, a few thunderstorms could pop up as the sun breaks through and we see activity flourish here as daytime heating gives way. Notice the heaviest of the rains we expect to be around portions of louisiana, mississippi and possibly into alabama throughout the afternoon hours and evening hours as well. So perspective looks as such here with the heaviest rains displaced east of texas, again flooding potential highest around parts of mississippi and louisiana. And the western United States, story here has been the excessive heat, another day of heat alerts that stretch all the way to the canadian border, temps climbing up to about 90 degrees there. Look at where 81 is average this time of year. Seattle, 77 is what you expect but well be touching 90 degrees by thursday afternoon. So big time heat across the western u. S. Pedram, thanks very much. It is Independence Day in ukraine. But this year the holiday comes with a sense of dread. But also defiance. Security has been increased across the country amid warnings that russia could launch major strikes on civilian and government targets. Ukrainian officials are also urging people to take extra precautions and Pay Attention to air raid sirens. And this is exactly six months since russias invasion when moscows hopes for a swift victory collapsed in the face of stiff resistance. In an emotional video address, president zelenskyy said the country was reborn the day that russia invaded becoming a nation that doesnt give up and doesnt forget. He also repeated his promise to retake all russianheld territory including crimea which moscow illegally annexed back in 2014. David mckenzie is joining us from keefyiv. How nervous is the atmosphere there, david . Reporter well, i have to say, it is quite relaxed considering if you look behind me there is groups of people, we are right in the center of kyiv, symbolic heart of the capital. And it is quite extraordinary that ukrainian officials have laid out this long line of russian tanks and Armored Vehicles and artillery pieces, they say that this war, russians expected to have a military parade here when they took over, they said this is the parade that they are getting. If you look behind me here, there is a burnt out tank that speaks to the intense fighting around the capital months ago. Now, ukraine pushed back that advance but still there is intense fighting, a stagnant frontline for many weeks now on the east, south and even the northeast of this country. Just this week ukrainian official saying at least 9,000 ukrainian soldiers have been killed in this conflict. The toll on civilians, on the military, has been very heavy for this war, this war of choice that russia made. As you said, president zelenskyy released a speech a short time ago came millennial rating this Independence Day and six months since the war started. Translator were holding on for six months. It is difficult for us. But we clenched our fists, fighting for our fate. Every new day is a new reason not to give up. Because having gone for so much, we have no right not to reach the end. What is the end of the war for us . We used to say peace. Now we say victory. Reporter you can feel the resilience of ukraines people just Milling Around here, writing messages on these tanks, some of them insulting to the russians of course. And this war, you know, i asked president zelenskyy in a press conference yesterday whether he felt people were fatigued, the International Community was fatigued by this conflict. He said it is important that they get support ongoing, not just to hold back russia from sgo entering ukraifurther, but they the ukrainian flag in all occupied territories. And you can feel that the war is something that people want to be over but they are girding themselves for a much longer fight. David, thank you for joining us from kyiv with those tanks there in the background. And support is coming in. In the hours ahead, u. S. Expected to announce its largest ever Security Package for ukraine worst around 3 billion. The u. S. Will send stockpiles of ammunition and it earmarks money for training and maintenance. And as the war reaches the sixth month mark, aid organizations are still on the ground to assist. To find out how you can help those affected by the war, visit cnn. Com impact. Long time colleagues face off in a rare intraparty battle, but only one of these new york democrats will appear on the november ballot. And later students in columbus, ohio are about to start a new school year. But they will be learning online for now as thousands of teachers remain on strike. Welcome back to cnn newsroom. If you are just joining us, let me bring you uptodate with the latest top stories. Were learning the National Archives found more than 700 pages of classified documents at Donald Trumps maralago resort in january, those details in a letter from an archivist to trumps legal team. And in the coming hours President Biden is expected to make a major announcement on student loan forgiveness. The white house may cancel up to 10,000 in Student Loan Debt per borrower under certain conditions. Redrawn maps and bitter fights defining features from the latest u. S. Primaries, a potential clash erupted between two democratic titans in manhattan, but it is jerry nadler who will appear on the ballot in november. Athena jones has that story for you. Reporter 15 term congressman jerry nadler emerged victorious in a primary that pitted him against carolyn maloney, longtime friend and ally who was elected to congress the same year he was in 1992. The two were forced to run in the same district after a messy redistricting process combined their districts. The race had become somewhat heated and nasty in the final days with congresswoman maloney raising questions about nadlers health and fitness for office. Nadler thanks his supporters, said that maloney and another challenger patel had called to concede, that canningcanning thanking them both. Here is what he said. Im so proud of tonights victory and im thrilled that we were able to win while remaining committed to our principles of kindness and progressivism. Reporter nadler vowed to fight for progressive values, to work to end the scourge of gun violence and protect abortion rights. Telling the crowd onward to victory in november. He said it because here in deep blue new york, the winner of this primary is heavily favored to win the general election in november. Alina jones, cnn, new york. And lets bring in our political consultant who is with us from new york. Thank you for joining us. Interesting that the midterms are usually not so strong for the incumbent party but actually the democrats performing pretty well considering. Why do you think that is . Yeah, max, a couple of things here. As you said, midterm years normally very bad for the party that is in power. But aside from the primary election that we saw last night where democrats and republicans were both picking their nominees to go up in the big general election in november, we actually saw a couple of special elections particularly a very competitive one in new york where a democrat beat a republican by just a couple points in a race that has been seen as a bell fwoet what could happen in november. And so what i think you are seeing on the democratic side is the energy that is bucking the convention at adwisdom. The Supreme Court decisions on gun violence, on overturning the right to abortion, has really added new energy to the left and i think that it could really make some major impacts in november as far as who controls congress. We should talk about florida, traditionally a swing state, but democrats have been a bit weaker there in recent years. But this is a real opportunity to unseat a major figure in the Republican Party for them. Absolutely. So Governor Desantis, the republican governor in florida, probably one of the most far right figures really in National American politics right now who has really modeled himself after trump and is considered to be a major contender for the 2024 president ial nomination. You know, he is going to be facing a former republican governor turned democrat in Charlie Crist. Like you said, this is traditionally a big swing state. President obama won it tries, but really since 2016, it has eluded democrats. Even though polling always shows democrats and republicans neck and neck in the state, the reality is that republicans now have a Voter Registration advantage in the state and with donald trump making it his second home, it has reenergized republicans there. And so definitely a major opportunity for democrats to dethrone what could be a major republican candidate in two years. And what we learn in these elections about the possibility of President Trump becoming president again . Well, what i think we saw particularly on the republican side were that lot of endorsed candidates, you know, who won not just last night but really winning in primary elections the past couple months. As we famously saw a couple weeks ago liz cheney the republican congresswoman who has really been the one to hold the trump administrations feet to the fire when it comes to january 6, and seeking for accountability, lost pretty handily her republican primary. So clearly Republican Voters are not shying away from trump. I think everything were seeing indicate thats has a pretty good shot at the nomination should he run again. However, what i do think we are seeing is an energized Democratic Party particularly around the decision on abortion that is going to put up a real fight even in a cycle that is not supposed to be very good for democrats. Thank you very much for your perspective on those key elections in the u. S. And still to come, two men accused of conspiring to kidnap michigans governor found guilty by a jury. The Teachers Union has been negotiating with the school board for months, class was supposed to begin on wednesday, but for now, there is still no agreement in sight. School does start on wednesday, which means that our children will be online learning. We know that this is absolutely not ideal. Reporter the School Board President calling the decision to strike disappointing. Reporter but Union Leaders say they have no choice. We have reached a point where the conditions in Columbus City schools are not acceptable.
