Hospitalizations have soared to their highest levels yet, and even as the virus rages around the world, the United States remains the epicenter of the crisis. The country has documented more than 10. 4 million cases since the pandemic began, far more than any other country. More than 241,000 americans have died from the disease. Texas is now the first u. We have a vacuum of leadership, and i think the vacuum of leadership is the biggest problem we have right now in this country in confronting the pandemic. Reporter we are continuing to see the president deny the results of this election, and refuse to recognize joe biden as the victor in this 2020 race, and as hes doing that, were being told by sources that behind the scenes, the president has this calm demeanor, and he understands whats going on and that he is not going to be in office past january, but the thing is he hasnt told his supporters that, and he has continued to push these baseless accusations about voter fraud as youre seeing republican officials, republican Election Officials push back on the president s claim and say there is no widespread evidence of it that they have seen, and they have looked into the allegations that youre seeing the president and his allies push. This comes as the president is increasingly frustrating republicans who are indulging him in what hes saying for now, his denial, but they want to look ahead to whats going to happen in january with the Senate Runoff in georgia thats going to determine whether or not democrats and republicans have the power. The question is how much longer does the president really keep this charade up. Many people dont think it will be that much longer. The question is, how does he end it. Does he finally publicly acknowledge joe bidens victory. Now to another obstacle facing president elect joe biden, sources tell cnn the Trump Administration is preventing biden from accessing messages left for him by World Leaders who have contacted the u. S. State department, but bidens team apparently is working around this problem by contacting foreign governments on its own. Biden has held numerous calls with World Leaders including the president of south korea, moon jaein, the two reaffirmed their commitment to a Robust Alliance and peaceful and prosperous korean peninsula. In and of itself, thats not the most serious situation facing the Biden Transition Team but its an apt symbol for the lack of cooperation from the administration. How does the biden team work around those blockades and are there areas in which those hacks wont work . Well, the thing is biden has been in this business for a very long time, and he has a very experienced team around him, so the diplomats in town, many of them, because by the time you get to washington, d. C. , youre at a very senior level. Many of them in other iterations have worked with joe biden, they know how to reach them. A lot of them, well, all of them had to hold back prior to him being named president elect throughout the whole campaign, for fear of violating the hatch act, fear of violating u. S. Law because theres only supposed to be as they always say, biden himself has been saying, one president at a time. The team with him knows how to reach the right people and hit the ground running. The hard part are the things like the personnel issues. They are not getting to get inside the agencys to see, okay, just how spare are they in terms of personnel. Who do i need to hire first . Its those kind of practical considerations that are really going to be slowed down by this. The replacement of Defense Department leaders with trump loyalists. How loudly should alarm bells be ringing, not just at the act itself but also the silence from republicans . Alarm bells are ringing because some of the people that they have brought in are those who have advocated a swift draw down to zero troops in afghanistan, for instance, and thats a real risk. President trump did tweet before the election that he did going to bring all the troops home from afghanistan before christmas. The problem with that, as many officials tried to reach him and explain to him is that you cant get all of their equipment out that fast, and if you draw out that fast, your intelligence footprint has to shrink. That means organizations like isis can plot without the u. S. Watching them, and also the Afghan Government is really reliant on u. S. Air power, u. S. Logistics to survive the ongoing taliban onslaught, so many officials that ive spoken to both in this administration and who may be in the next one are worried that if theres a precipitous pullout from afghanistan or iraq and syria, that that could spell danger to u. S. Citizens and u. S. Personnel overseas down the line. Now, lastly, i want to ask you the fact that the vote was closed, republicans gained some house seats and may hold the senate. Many are saying that it shows that trumpism isnt over. How does that translate to foreign policy. Can we say this is an endorsement of America First isolationism or read it as a reflective of the entrenched partisan divide . What diplomats are thinking looking at that is this country could very well flipflop back to republican, back to isolationist in four years. Troops in harms way, theyre going to have some tough questions about, you know, why should we make that sort of bet on this white house when we dont know if youre going to be here in a couple of years. I saw the Vice President of an Italian Doctors Federation calling for another National Lock down. Is that where the country is heading . It certainly seems to be heading in that direction, kim, given that what were seeing is daily increases, the likes of which we didnt see in the first wave of the pandemic earlier this year when italy was the hardest hit country in the world. We have now surpassed more than a million recorded cases. There are currently more than 600,000 active positive cases of coronavirus in italy, so we already have five regions of the country that are called red zones, basically under lock down, and they include about a quarter of the countrys population, and it may be simply a matter of time before the rest of the country follows suit. The intensive care units are at this point close to being overwhelmed in many parts of the country. We have heard some doctors say that theyre starting to have to make those hard choices about who to put on a ventilator, and who simply has no hope, and will have to die. So definitely things are, at this point, looking like theyre going to get much worse than they were in the first wave. Yesterday italy reported in 24 hours, 623 deaths from covid19. We are approaching what we saw, the worst, this is actually the worst daily death toll in seven months, and it appears that its only going to get worse from here. Now, there is some there are some scientists who are saying that perhaps this current will reach its peak by the end of this month, but certainly if the numbers continue to grow, the situation, which is already very concerning is going to become profoundly grave. Kim. Worse than the first wave. Thats hard to hear. Salma, lets turn to you, the u. K. Becomes part of the dismal five, the u. S. , brazil, india, mexico, all now with neurosurgeon more than 50,000 covid deaths. 50,000 people who have lost their lives due to this virus, it is worse than the worst Case Scenario than the government had laid out at the beginning of this pandemic. Its not just about the death toll. Its about the rising case numbers. Were looking at about 20,000 new cases being reported daily across this country. Hospitals are being overwhelmed. I was in the north of the country just last week. Thats a hot spot where they were telling me that Hospital Capacity was at over 95 in some areas. So truly concerning to hit this milestone, and it is something the Prime Minister had to address when he spoke to reporters yesterday, and he said he believes that the countrys entering a new phase of dealing with this pandemic, and he had a twofold strategy. Let me break down that strategy for you. First, he says he wants to roll out mass testing across the country. Theres been a Pilot Program for that in liverpool in the north of the country. So far, very low turnout on that. Very far from the vision of everyone getting tested regardless of the symptoms. The second part is the vaccine, this very hopeful vaccine that were all hoping, waiting and wishing for but we all know will not be widely available until next year. So really the government here has very few tools left in its tool box. We are already under a nationwide lock down. We have masks mandated. We have restrictions in place. The optimistic view of this very terrible death toll is that theres a lag, a twoweek lag, and well see the results of these restrictions in a few weeks and things will get better. The sobering and worrying view of the death toll number is it is indicative of something much larger and the government simply does not have control of the virus. Kim. Distributors must figure out how to transport millions of shots around the world while keeping them viable. Cnns anna stewart reports. We have 1. 3 billion doses globally next year. Reporter millions of doses have been made, ready to go, should the pfizer, biontech vaccine get approval. This poses a major challenge, the storage and transportation of the vaccine. We have to keep the product very cold and shipped in in very much sub freezing temperatures, and there will be a shortterm of stability perhaps at refrigerated temperatures, and thats going to be a logistical challenge. Logistics firms like ups, fedex, and deutsch post started planning for this months ago. We have about 9,000 Health Care Specialists around the world, about 140 certified warehouses around the globe. About another hundred terminals that are certified for health care. We also had to make some specific investments in minus 80 degrees Storage Containers to be able to distribute. Those are all things that we had to do. These firms are a Critical Link between the pharmaceutical firms and governments. What we have to focus on is our interaction with our customers when they say that we need to be ready. Were working and were planning according to that, and we will be ready. Texas is now battling a surge in covid19 infections as the state marks a staggering milestone. More than 1 million confirmed cases. On wednesday, reported more than 10,000 new cases for a second straight day, and as cases climbed, so do the hospitalizations. Medical tests will be set up outside two hospitals in lubbock, to help expand capacity. The governor of texas is now deploying Additional Resources to cities like el paso where the county judge has extended a stayathome order until the end of the month as cases and hospitalizations there soar. Cnns omar jimenez has the story. Reporter churches are empty. Businesses no different. And the new reality for el paso, texas, where coronavirus has taken hold unlike any other place in the country. Based on the number of active cases and the population, one in every 30 people in the county actively has covid19. The test Positivity Rate has been at 20 or higher since before halloween. Nearly 1,100 people are in the hospital with coronavirus. Record levels. And the virus continues to claim lives. He went to work. It was the last time we saw him. Thats the last time his children saw him. Daniel morales, a nurse, fought for weeks. Wed gather in front of the hospital in the parking lot every evening at 9 00 p. M. , and wed pray because we believed hed come home. I always have a positive nature where hes going to be fine. Hes fighting this thing off. Hes fighting it. Hell be fine. And he never recovered. Reporter Daniel Morales was 39 years old. Leaving a wife and four kids behind. Its a pain thats become all too familiar. This is one of six mobile morgues currently in operation here in el paso. They say there are more on the way, just to try and keep up with the number of deaths we have seen here. All in all, officials here say they can hold up to 176 bodies if necessary. You couple that possibility with whats been a record level of hospitalizations here, and Officials Say they are on the brink of disaster. Were in a dire situation. Reporter david stout is a county commissioner in el paso, and knows the medical examiner may need even more resources. Hes also asked that we start looking for an actual brick and mortar situation that has refrigerations a refrigeration. Reporter and thats purely because you have so many bodies backing up. Reporter in recent weeks, the county judge issued a shut down of nonessentially businesses. Some are pushing back. Our team members dont have paychecks. If we dont have hours to give them, they cant get paid. Reporter the state calling the judges move illegal, pushing for other mitigation strategies. As numbers across texas continue to rise. When things start getting worse everywhere else, people are going to have to go back to those other places, whats going to happen in el paso. Reporter the debate over how to proceed, shut down or not. These are his ashes. Reporter is a back and forth morales no longer has patience for. We have an empty chair now. We have a void that will never be filled, and you know what, if i lose my house, if i lose my car, i will replace it. Ill rebuild. But you cannot bring my son back. You cant. Olojai on the texas covid19 task force. Thank you so much for taking the time to join us. Texas, you know, the first state to reach a million cases. El paso, one of the worst hot spots, more people hospitalized with covid19 than most states. What does the surge look like on the ground there . First of all, thanks for having me. I think one thing people need to understand is that this is not the situation you want to be in. Weve sort of gone through the journey that has been covid, we never expected to be here. We truly believed as our Community Gets hand around it, we mobilize, state, and national resources, we hoped by the end of this month or hopefully into december, we could start to see a leveling down of some of these numbers and hopefully go into 2021 with some hope looking at vaccines and some of the monoclonal antibodies. In terms of beds and resources and just the staff having to deal with this influx of patients, whats it like for Health Care Workers there, what are you seeing . Well, i mean, one of the things i tell friends that call me and ask the same thing is we have a tent outside of our multiple emergency rooms. Those tents are not for camping. Those are for putting patients and thats never the situation you want to be. The physicians, the nurses, the Health Care Community is tired and fatigued, and this isnt like a shooting or a katrina or a Natural Disaster that happens a few days or a week. This has been going on for weeks to months and so people are tired. I think what im excited about really Going Forward is the hope the community has, the focus that our political resources are putting into trying to get ahold of this in Going Forward. I want to ask you about that in a second, but, you know, you mentioned the tents. I mean, those are concrete images people have when you hear about the city bringing in more mobile morgues. I mean, those are things that really resonate and hit home with people. You get that sense of dread with the numbers and the charts maybe dont convey. With these more hospitalizations, eventually well see more deaths. How bad are you expecting this to get there . I mean, make no mistake that this is not pleasant. These are darker days that we have ahead. The medical examiner is working through a backlog of unfortunate fatalities and so, again, for me, its to sort of talk about that picture of hope for our community. We need to get through this, the build up that we have had in cases and hospitalizations and eventually unfortunate deaths isnt good. We can get through this if we focus on limiting mobility, physically distancing and really focusing on the end of this year into next year. Thats really what im trying to tell the community, that we need to fix this. What about, you know, lock downs. I mean, when you look around the country, more and more cities might look like el paso, and you know, there was a local shut down ordered there. So is that what its going to take to get this under control there, and perhaps in other cities as well . Yeah, i think its important for people to understand that the politics was never going to save us. Only we as individuals and communities. Each community has to take this on on their own, right, and i think if theres no therapeutic backdrop, individuals in each community will slow down their behavior. They will stop to interact. This is not the thanksgiving to have ten people over. Definitely not the christmas to have a full family christmas, and if people understand that, now that we have the hope at the end of that proverbial tunnel with the therapeutics and potential vaccine, they can understand this is a slice in time. Lets get into next year, a year from now, we can celebrate thanksgiving and christmas, but its critically important we focus now. I want to ask you before we go, president elect biden has already announced a coronavirus Advisory Board. If you could address the board, what would you tell them . I think, first of all, a great group of scientists, one of my mentors, dr. Michael osterholm at the university of minnesota, i know theyre going to do the right things. Theyre going to focus on the science, the data and give recommendations to that Political Team of what needs to that happen Going Forward. Im hoping that we can get away from the politicalization of covid and the recommendations around it, and do what we need to as a community and a country to move forward and going into the next year on a better footing. Its heading to the north, and as you mentioned its made landfall near cedar key in the bend of florida. A 50 Miles Per Hour storm right now, and eta with this landfall, and this is actually its fourth landfall, the first one was in central america, second was in cuba. Then a third landfall in the keys, and this is its fourth and final landfall in the big bend of florida, and it makes for the 12th named storm to make landfall during this recordbreaking season. Heres what it looks like on radar now, pretty ragged now that its made landfall, and that doesnt change the effects, though, even though its not looking as impressive on satellite and radar imagery. That doesnt change the impacts. Were still seeing a lot of moisture flowing at the peninsula of florida. That is leading to heavy rainfall across areas that really dont need the rainfall now because theyre water logged. You picked up so much rainfall across tampa, and daytona, into jacksonville, youre also seeing it, ponte vedra beach, youre beginning to see the rainfall too. South florida, you have picked up, i would say, about 14 inches of rain, due to eta since sunday. Youre going to add to the totals, and the National Hurricane center think, youre going to get upwards of 2 feet in some portions of south florida. Tampa bay has picked up 6 to 7 inches of rain in some spots, and then you add in a little bit of storm surge and youre definitely going to see flooding. We do have flood alerts up across the west coast of florida because of all of this activity, and again, whats going to exacerbate that, and that would be storm surge. We have eta up here to the north, and its on shore wind will bring more water on shore. The gulf of mexico, the bottom of the gulf of mexico isnt very steep. Its a gradual slope. That allows this water to go very far inland, so were seeing some deep storm surge inundation, upwards of 3 to 5 feet across the tampa bay area. Now, as eta pushes to the north, it is going to bring the Tropical Storm force conditions to north florida and south georgia as i mentioned earlier. We do have Tropical Storm warnings out for that portion of the southeast. Where does it go from here . It goes over north florida, and then actually stays offshore once we get to the end of the week, and thats because of a cold front dropping down. However, that front will work off of eta to help bring very heavy rainfall across the mid atlantic once we get into later on today and also tomorrow. There is the risk for flash flooding across that area. We have to be watchful for that. Obviously well be following this story throughout the day on cnn. Meteorologist tyler mauldin, appreciate it.
