[ cheers and applause ] well, thank you very, very much from the bottom of my heart, thank you all. It means world to me and my family. And i will see you on thursday. Thank you, thank you, thank you. [ cheers and applause ] and bidens wife, jill, spoke from the Delaware School where she once taught. Delivering a personal appeal for her husband. She said is although the u. S. May seem hopelessly divided, joe biden could bring people together and carry the country forward. Tuesday nights criticism of donald trump was left to two Democratic Party elders. If you want a president who defines the job as spending hours a day watching tv and zapping people on social media. He is your man. Distracting and demeaning works great if you are trying to entertain and inflame, in a crisis, it collapses like a house of cards. When this president goes overseas, its not a good will mission, its a blooper reel, he breaks up with our allies and writes love letters to dictators. America deserves a president who is looked up to not laughed at. And the democrats also hammered home their message that joe biden can work with republicans to get things done. They played an emotional video highlighting his friendship with the late senator john mccain. But in the 1970s, joe was assigned a military aid for a trip overseas. I was the Navy Senate Liaison and used to carry your bags on overseas trips. The son of a gun never carried my bags. He was supposed to carry my bags, damn it, but he never carried my bags. Cnn senior political analyst mark preston joins me from washington, d. C. , good to see you. Good morning, good morning, rosemary. So joe biden accepted the Democratic National nomination. No surprise, and they spoke of broken family to a broken nation that can be fixed with love, understanding and compassion, what else did she say . And will her message resonate with voters . What she didnt say is she didnt talk about donald trump. We heard a lot about donald trump from speak ers setting up the comparison of joe biden verse donald trump. They set trump up last night as being somebody who is not relatable to people. Somebody that only cares about himself and then we see today, we saw the speakers really trying to focus on joe biden being a person somebody with great morales in this case, we hear jill biden talking about how they actually met and how she, you know, came to become the mother to his two boys. You know who are had tragically lost their mother and jill we saw tonight was a humanizing factor. She tried to talk about her husband in just very simple terms. But also in terms that we tried to connect. And cindy mccain participated in an 8 minute convention video. Celebrating the unlikely friendship between her late husband senator john mccain and joe biden. What impact might a video like this have on those disgruntled republicans out there . Yeah, i think what is interesting is this was the continued thread that we saw being woven from john kasich and others. We saw three prominent represent are can women that came out for joe biden. What we saw tonight, to your point is we saw cindy mccain really connecting joe biden to john mccain on a level of friendship, a level of, again, as we are showing pictures there, this idea of honor and service to the country. And i think that, that was done rather effectively and then, of course we saw colin powell come up, the former secretary of state, republican, came out and endorse joe biden as well. The connecting thread that we will see through the next couple of nights where joe biden is appealing to liberals in his party and disaffected republicans and independents here in the u. S. Yeah, and then, tough words from former president bill clinton who said that the ovales of should be a command cent er not a storm center what else did he say and will his message resonate beyond the Traditional Democratic voter . The interesting thing, one, where bill clinton spoke was the 9 00 hour, which is still prime time, and a lot of people will have seen his speech. You know, in past elections we have seen him speak in the 10 00 hour. Thats the golden hour, thats the hour where the likes of jill biden, joe biden will speak in the 10 00 hour. We saw others of course. Michelle obama last night speaking. Now, we see bill clinton out there, the steady hand. He is really trying, i think, to appeal to those democrats and diehard democrats that may be out in the midwest who may be upset with the way that washington is running. But, they liked the, the bill clinton policies of his time that bill clinton, you know, was a fairly steady hand at the presidency, even all the comotion that he did create for it. That, i think, is who he reached out to, its interesting, that he was not necessarily put on the dockett to speak tonight to reach out to young voters. We saw that from aoc, who came in and ended up with one of the nominating speeches for Bernie Sanders. Many thanks to you for joining us, preappreciate it. Thank you. Donald trump responded to bidens convention. He questioned his mental capacity. Andthe u. S. Postal general, President Trump appointed is backing down on cut backes that threaten mailin voting in the up coming election. We have the report. Tonight, the Postal Service is changing course. Walking back plans to Institute Big changes that critics say had the potential to disrupt the fall election. As millions of americans plan to cast their vote by mail. The democrats want to make it a political issue. Its not a political issue. Its really about a correct vote. The announcement comes as democrats push a bill in congress to increase funding to the post office and protect its ability to deliver ballots on time. They felt the heat and thats what we were trying to do is to make it too hot for them to handle. All while President Trump continues to attempt to discredit the vote by mail system. Post master general, lewis dejoy will be on capitol hill friday to answer lawmakers questions. Meanwhile the campaign for president is heating up. President trump punching back after the first night of the Democratic National convention. It was a night where democrats landed blow after blow on the commander and chief. Headlined by the former first Lady Michelle obama. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is. Those last words, it is what it is. Seemingly an attack on trumps use of the dismissive term to describe the staggering coronavirus death toll in the country. They are dying. Thats true, and you have it is what it is. All this while the coronavirus hotspots continue to pop up across america. The president entertaining the idea of promoting ab extract of a toxic plan because it was suggested by a big supporter, mike lindel, the ceo of my pillow. He claims it was tested and being looked at by the fda, but could provide no proof or evidence of the study in an interview with anderson cooper. This thing works, its the miracle of all time. You said, sir, you said that you have seen the estimate ttess it . The test is out there, phase one, phase two. Where is the test . Show it to us . How are you different from a Snake Oil Salesman . The platform stands by itself. A platform that god gave me, of integrity and trust. An exhaustive bipartisan u. S. Senate investigation confirms and even goes beyond what special Council Robert mueller found last year. Russia Intelligence Services used ties to the Trump Campaign to disrupt the u. S. 2016 election to help donald trump win. They found extensive contacts between Paul Manafort and a russian Intelligence Officer that quote represented a grave Counter Intelligence threat. Democrats on the Intelligence Committee wrote this is what collusion looks like. Senator mark warner stressed that americans must learn from this report to prevent election interference from happening again. This report is a thousand pages long. Twice as long as the mueller report. I would urge every american to read it, to draw their own conclusions. Unprecedented amount of russian intervention and a miriad of contacts within individuals affiliated and associated with the Trump Campaign. As for the committees republicans they say the report did not conclude there was a coordinated conspiracy with the russians. We found absolutely no evidence whatsoever, that donald trump or his campaign colluded with russia to medal in our t our elections and the fbi made mistakes, they have not vey verified the document or the sources that were used to create it and third, russia is still meddling and now, so is china and iran. The 2020 elections are only a few months away and we must do better than we did in 2020. Larry is the director of the university of Virginia Center for politics. He joins me now from charlotte wi sville, virginia. Lets start with the dnc, we have seen the convention. They are trying to unite the party and bring in did disgruntled republicans along the way, has any of it worked so far and will the far left progressives climb on board you think . Well with, the good news for democrats is this is about as united as the the Democratic Party gets. By nature it is a coalition party. There are many factions. That has been true for many decades. Nothing new here. But, there is an overriding desire to get rid of donald trump. And that is what is uniting democrats and basically all their policy disagreements for the vast majority of say Bernie Sanders supporters they said, we are going to deal with that on november 4th. The day after the election. And larry, of course, the big political issue right now, is President Trumps undermining of the u. S. Postal service and mailin voting. For now those changes that were slowing down deliveries have been put on hold. Many voters still wonder if their ballot will get counted. Theres a lot of concern, where do things stand . And what are the political ramifications of all of this . Theres no way that the post master general and the trump people would have agreed to stop this process unless the heat had become unbearable. Even republicans were coming on board with those opposed to these changes. At least before election day. So, they have had to pull back. But, you have just noted the key thing. They managed to get out there amessage to the large majority, probably of democrats had who had planned to vote by mail. Now, they wonder what should they do . They are not going to vote on election day, most of them, they want to vote by mail. But the trump people and the post master general have under mined their confidence in the system. So, democrats have got to spend time rebuilding that confidence and making sure that the changes they have pledged not to fulfill actually stay undone until after the election. Right, and larry, a senate Intelligence Committee report just out details the security risks posed by Donald Trumps 2016 campaign, with its russia contacts. What are the political, the political ramifications of this . And ultimately do voters career abo care about this issue . Im not sure voters care anymore . They should care. I dont think that they are focused on it. And we have had this intermittently for years now. The facts coming out of the senate disturbing. To have a campaign manager, one of the candidates, who won, working for years with someone who was a russian agent . You know, in the old days that would have been the end, not just of the campaign manager, but of the candidate. We live in a different era and i think probably it was difficult to manage this so that the truth came out in a way that would be powerful and would have an impact on trump. And larry, just finally, how surprised are you that with the handling or mishandling of the pandemic high unemployment, racism, division in the country, that joe biden would not be further ahead in the polls . Because we are seeing him only a few points ahead of donald trump. Yes, that is true. Cnn had biden up only four. I believe in polling averages. And the average for biden is actually around 8. 5 . Which is remarkable. That is an obama level victory. Now, will it be the same in november . Have no idea. We will have to watch. Look, we live in an era of really extreme polarization. It takes a lot to pull anybody away from trump or to pull anybody away from biden. So, we have to live with that, the old days when you had land slides of reque60 or 55 . They are gone, at least for the near future, the foreseeable future. They are gone. Yep, its going to be a tight race for had sure. Larry, always a pleasure to chat with you. Many thanks. Thank you, rosemary. And still ahead, on cnn ne newsroom, a short but memory speech at her partys convention. Hear what alexandria ocasiacortez said about the Progressive Movement and the first lady talks about the pandemic changed the school and our lives. And focus to win the. Com now and never go to the post office again welcome back, well the pandemic got less spotlight, but it loomed large. One of the most compelling moments came from jill bidens address. The wife of a democratic president ial nominee is a professor and longtime educators and she spoke about the anxiety that echos down empty hall ways and missing the murmur of ideas. Yes, so many classrooms are quiet right now. The playgrounds are still. But if you listen closely, you can hear the sparks of change in the air. Across this country educators, parents, first responders, americans of all walks of life are putting their shoulders back, fighting for each other, we have not given up. We just need leadership worthy of our nation. Worthy of you. Meantime, the world surpassed 22 million coronavirus cases on tuesday. And the u. S. Remains one of the biggest drivers of those rising totals. The country just recorded another 44,000 cases and more than 1300 deaths. But that comes after a slight glimmerer of hope on monday. Nick shows us what is happening across the country. The good news, this country just logged less than 40,000 new cases in a day. First time in nearly two months. Very high, but falling. The bad news, we are still averaging more than 1,000 lives lost every day to this virus. And heres the key metric. In nearly half of states, the number of tests coming back positive is still too high. You look at new york city right now. Its less than 1 . Thats what you want the whole country to be. There are parts of the country where its 15, 18, 20 . Thats really high. New infection rates are now falling in the south and rising in the heart land. Some returning Missouri State University Students are packing a quarantine gobag just in case. I also bought Hand Sanitizer and bleach, and clorox wipes where i can find them. And across the country, the path back to inperson classes is pitted with potholes, 80 positive tests in notre dame yesterday alone, all under graduate classes will now be online only for at least two weeks. And at unc chapel hill, its well, its that, according to the student newspaper. You know, four clusters across the campus in three days. The hospitals are running out of quarantine beds. And they are done after a week, tomorrow they will move to Remote Learning only. You go in, people get infected, boom, they are closing them down. So, its better to ease in perhaps with virtual until you see whats going on. When you are in a really hot zone. In miamidade, florida, 600 Public School employees have tested positive for covid19. The Los Angeles School district now plans to test every single student and staffer. Around 800,000 people. Herculean. We want to keep the schools from becoming a problem. We have to test and trace the schools. A quicker, easier saliva test could be available in weeks. Its basically spit in a tube, it does not need a swab or the special transport media. We are told testing is not a this fight will always be largely on us. Its part of a comprehensive plan. You have to do the things that the surgeon general, we tell you the three ws. Wear the mask, watch your distance, wash your hands. Sounds simple but we spoke with a faculty member from chapel hill who said her College Campus is a micro casm of the entire inside, theres not enough people who are willing to follow Public Health guidelines. Nick watt, cnn, los angeles. We have a cnn medical analyst and former new york city assistant commissioner of health and she hosts the podcast, epidemic and joins me now from new york. Good to chat with you, doctor. My pleasure. So, we are seeing schools of all levels now battle covid19 outbreaks and another college, notre dame has just now taken its classes online, due to infections there. What is the best way for them to work out what to do in the absence of any real guidance out there . Rose maier, rosemary, i the big picture is we need to look at this as a societal problem. Not limited to certain areas or certain schools. But rather something that is happening across the community. As long as you have spread throughout the community. Will you have spread in College Campuses and other schools. Will you have spread in bars and restaurants and other facilities. This is a problem that needs to be addressed as a Community Problem and that has not been done in a concerted fashion nationwide all at once. Even know. And so, we continue to play this game of whackamole where we see it go down in one place and see it pop up in another. And of course, new cases across the country are coming down slightly. Which of course is a good thing. Still at around 40,000 a day. And deaths are still averaging a thousand on a daily basis. How is this possible . Six months in to this pandemic and do you think that the decline in case is perhaps due to more people Wearing Masks . I do think masks have had an impact. I do think people are finally hearing the message that masks work to protect yourself. To protect others against transmission of the virus. That has helped here. We are scaling up testing, but even know we still dont have nearly the level of testing we should have. And in many parts of the you know caountry, the rates of transmission, are so high, options where pool testing where you combine different specimens in to one are not feesable because theres high rates of transmission. Theres a lot that needed to be done that still has not been done. I guess theres a lot of hope on that saliva test, isnt there had . Do you support it and see that as a possible game changer sneer. I do think the saliva test is a game changer. This allows us to spare ourselves using those nasal swabs. So that is a huge savings right there. That was a rate limiting step we were running out of those. To not needs those, and not need any special specimen collection kits. To be able to use the routine Laboratory Chemicals and machines that we have on hand and not need to procure anything special, makes a big difference. Big study shows immunity may last longer than previously thought. Perhaps three months or more and we are learning the threshold for herd immunity could be lower than previously thought. Around 50 of the population. How significant is it for reaching some level of herd immunity, given that a mask is all we have got and plus the possibility of herd immunity and can it only happen once theres a vaccine . I think the way to think about herd immunity is you are layering different things, different protective interventions to reduce everybodys risk of spread. So, masks are actually a big part of that. But, if you combine masks and social distancing, and the fact that some people have had the virus and are at least in the shortterm, probably immune to reinfection, that can have a dramatic reduction, yield a dramatic reduction in transmission of the virus that could bias time until we have the vaccine. It always gets back to the mask, doesnt it . We just need to wear them. Thank you as always. My pleasure. Democrats are making a point to highlight diversity and inclusion in their national convention. But are they giving progressive members a big enough voice. Our experts weigh in. That is next. Welcome back to our viewers watching here in the u. S. And all around the world, im rosemary church. Well, joe biden has officially secured the democratic nomination for u. S. President. On the second night of the Democratic National convention. Party delegates from across the country, formally endorsed him in a virtual roll call vote and he got support from key members of his party. Including former president bill clinton and Chuck Schumer but a hold out was alexandria ocasia cortez, she backed Bernie Sanders and praised the Progressive Movement he laid. In fidelity and gratitude, working to establish 21st century, social, economic and human rights. Including guaranteed health care, higher education, and Health Rights for all people in the united states. A movement that realizes the unsustainable brutality of an economy that reward s explosive inequalities of wealth for the few at the expense of longterm stability for the. And who organized a historic Grassroots Campaign to reclaim our democracy. Cnn political commentator angela wry joins me from los angeles, she is also the former executive director at the congressional black caucus. Also, with us is anna navarro, cnn political commentator and biden supporter from miami in florida. Good to see you both. Good to see you. So anna, lets start with you, we just heard from alexandria orcasia cortez, her goal was to speak in support of Bernie Sanders. What do you take from that and have progressives been sufficiently included in the process, or does the Democratic Party run the risk of snubbing them again. From my perspective, its been a big, inclusive tent. Theres been moderates and republicans and i think its less about looking at the labels of whether you are a disenfranchised republican or whether you are a never trumper or whether you are a progressive or a moderate, its less about labels and more about all hands on deck. Its time to unite, to put bygones aside, we have seen that joe biden has done that by putting Kamala Harris on the ticket. We have seen that Bernie Sanders did it yesterday in his convention speech, asking everyone to join and keep the, our eyes on the prize. Beating donald trump, electing joe biden. And angela, what do you say to this . This was a problem back hin 201, when Bernie Sanders the not get the nomination and hill had har clinton did, the far left progressives can did not vote and some voted for donald trump. Will the dnc be able to unite the party and unite all parts of the party and get them on board with the biden harris ticket . Well, and i think the work is still left to be done. Right . You know, today, a number of my friends and folks on my team were like, why is aoc being used for this. Aoc is used to say her name. And folks were frustrated. She is such a powerful, strong, young voice in the party. Definitely the future of not just the Democratic Party, but progressives. Its fair that theres a number of young people that dont like the boxes of democrat, republican, independent, and want to just be known for what kinds of policies they support. She is a prolific voice. And to be used only to endorse Bernie Sanders or to, i think, she was the second in the speeches, seconding his endorsement or his nomination, i think its a missed opportunity. And so, you know, to annas point, yeah, the Democratic Party is a big tent party. But when it comes to the pomp and circumstance of convention, rarely do you hear all the diversity and the voices. I had i think the most diverse part was the nominating process of joe biden. I loved that. All types of folks in labor and teachers and elected officials and folks who are longterm party folks and folks who were active visits. To me, that was the party. What i want to understand is why we are not focusing on all of the usuals that these different members of the party in the this big tent have. And how we best address them . I think that is going to be the next frontier and its critical to ensure that he has the votes he needs to get across the finish line in november. Right, and anna, the dnc has already been criticized for a lack of latina reputation. Only three have their own speaking slots over the four of the nights. And how can biden and the dnc reach out to encourage latinos to vote for a harris biden ticket. I was upset about that. I spoke to joe biden himself and Kamala Harris and others in the campaign. But that he inbeing said, once the convention, it does not feel that way. Yesterday the emcee was eva longoria, a self made woman. Ninth generation american and a great activist and philanthropist and a woman that stands up for good causes. She was there the entire night. We heard from senator cortez, so, there more work to be done . Absolutely. Do the numbers for latinos have to get better . Absolutely. Do latinos feel that they should not be taken for granted . And they want their votes to be earned and they want respect . Absolutely. All right. And anna, i will put the question to both of you, but anna first, we watched and listened as jill biden made her address, to plead for people to vote for her husband joe, how will that message resonate with female voters, anna, first . I think it will resonate with all sorts of voters. I think the idea of a president and a first lady who showcase, empathy, humanity, who are able to comfort other americans and able to rise from challenges and obstacles and great grief and continue to put one foot in front of the other as she said about joe biden. For me, also, the beginning of the package, which was a video narrorated by as i understand isis by cindy mccain. It brought back the close friendship that there was between mccain and joe biden and how much they believe in the institutions of government and in democracy and america being a shining beacon on the hill for the entire world. In comparison to what we have in donald trump, who many, including myself, perceive as a threat to American Values and american securitier and a laughingstock internationally. It was emotional and beautiful, and i thought it, you know, it brought jill biden the human, the family man, the father, the husband. The son, in to our homes. And angela, the last word goes to you on that. Yeah, anna, you probably could make me cry, but i dont know what is going on with my eyes. All of a sudden they are burning. But, i will just say, one of the most, one of the most important things to me, anna throughout the process has been your voice. Truly. Because i know you are always speaking your truth and so, i know that if things are resonating with you they did well. So, i, you know, again, i was floored by her speech and i thought she was phenomenal, you brought up a word that misch obama us that Michelle Obama said, empathy. They had her styled like a teacher today, and it was beautiful and to hear joe biden talk about the strength she brought to their family and how she said, the way you bringing a broken country together is the same way you bring a broken family together. And that being her own personal testimony was incredibly powerful and smart. Kudos to the speech writers and to her for her delivery. Great to talk to you both, thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. And still to come an investigation is under way to find the source of a coronavirus outbreak in australia. It was found that two passengers caught the virus from sitting on a flight from israel to germany. They were sitting across the aisle from infected passengers at the time, they were not tested before boarding. And no mitigation measure were not in place and masks were not required. As the i saustralian victor state is trying to control their outbreak, they say that the active cases can be traced to two hotels. Good to see you, what happened at the Quarantine Hotels that may have resulted in the spread of covid19 . Well, rosemary, it goes to show how a vicious second wave of covid19 can come from the smallest ripples. In this sense, the ripple was a family of four who checked in to the ridges hotel after they had come down with coronavirus in may. Now, that family of four accidentally passed that virus on to Security Guards who were working at the hotel trying to keep everybody there safe. And those Security Guards then passed it on in to the community in melbourne and what we have now is thousands of cases since may, and hundreds of deaths as well, rosemary. Now, theres been a judicial inquiry that was set up in to how this happened. How did such a small number of cases turn in to the many thousands. The judicial inquerrconveyo state epidemiologists said that 19 of the cases in victoria through the second of may can be traced to two hotels, the ridges hotel and the stanford hotel. The family of four was being quarantined in the ridges hotel. How might that change the way security is done around the Quarantine Hotels . Well, its an imperfect process as we know, rosemary. Here in New South Wales, we had our first case of a Security Guard from a Hotel Quarantine coming down with coronavirus. They are not quite sure how that happened. It could be simply because he touched the same surface as an infected traveler coming in to australia. And being quarantined, may have been passed on that way. The government here said they are on top of that matter and they dont feel its a threat to the community. But the premier of New South Wales she had she believes its a miracle that we have gone so long without a case getting out of that Hotel Quarantine setting, rosemary. Yeah, and its heartbreaking, at the beginning australia did so well fighting this. So many thanks. What we are seeing is that the government of lukeshenko and the Security Forces are tries to make a come back. Earlier today, there was a protest and a semistrike going on in a tractor factory, the military showed up and dispercented the folks. With putin and macrone and lukeshenko and for the first time, theres a message coming out in english, urging the council to not recognize the election. Heres what she said.
