So at this hour the u. S. Has the highest reported number of coronavirus cases in the world. The w. H. O. Says its confirmed cases of the virus have more than 190 countries and territories. No one is known to be immune, and despite the efforts of doctors around the world, so far there is no vaccine. Johns Hopkins University has logged more than 532,000 cases worldwide with more than 24,000 deaths. In the u. S. , more than 82,000 americans are now infected surpassing even china. The u. S. On thursday reported 15,000 confirmed cases in just a single day. Yet the u. S. President seems eager to move on. People want to go back to work. Im hearing it loud and clear from everybody, and its going to happen pretty quickly. Af lot of progress has made but we have to go back to work. We may take sections of our country, we may take large sections of our country that arent so seriously affected. There are now almost four times the number of cases in the u. S. Than reported in china. The epicenter, as you know, is in new york. Erica hill is there and filed this report. Erica, hi. Reporter empty streets lead to packed Emergency Rooms across new york city. The countrys epicenter for this pandemic. It is insane that in the wealthiest country in the world that our heroes that are on the front lines do not have all of the personal protective equipment to protect themselves. Reporter the need for critical gear, including ventilators is unrelenting, as the number of patients soars. At elm hurst hospital in queens 13 people dieing in one day. All the people you see, they all have covid. Dr. Colleen smith documented 72 hours inside elm hurst for the new york times. We are in various offices from the president to the head of health and hospitals saying things like were going to be fine. Everythings fine, and from our perspective, everything is not fine. I dont have the support that i need and even just the materials that i need physically to take care of my patients, and its america. And were supposed to be a first world country. Reporter cnn has reached out to elm hurst hospital about dr. Smiths statements. Further south at new york citys bellevue hospital, a make shift morgue is being set up for a possible surge. Nyu is allowing senior medical students to graduate early to help meet the demand for Health Care Workers. Across the country, leaders are watching urging people to stay home knowing they may be next. What we see in italy, from what we see in spain, from what we see in new york city, its coming here. Nobody is immune from this virus. Just over two weeks ago we had zero. This crisis is ramping up exponentially. In louisiana on the heels of americas deadliest day for this virus, skyrocketing. At hospitals everywhere doctors are preparing for the possibility of difficult questions about who is treated. We want to do our best to save every life that comes through our doors, but during a pandemic when resources become scarce, sometimes we have to engage in uncomfortable conversations. Reporter more proof that this unpredictable virus is changing how we live every day. You have a whole new generation who have never lived through anything like this. They never went to war. They were never drafted. They never went through a national crisis. And this is going to shape them. Medical professionals were leaving the hospital, they told cnn it is worse. When they were asking how they were feeling, they were concerned they could get the coronavirus. They could be a carrier and give it to someone. Not just among their colleagues or patients but their families when they go home. Erica, thanks for that report. The death of a nurse in new york underscores the need for Health Care Workers to get the support they need. 48yearold tested positive last week. Days later he was dead. He may be the first nurse in this hardhit city to die. His sister said he had asthma but was over wise healthy. She spoke to cnn just a short time ago. Unfortunately everything happened so quickly. He told my parents that he was positive and had corona and three days later he sent me a text message and shared that he was in the icu and on a ventilator and he couldnt talk or he would choke so he was having trouble breathing. And six days later he died. We can do something about this, and that we didnt in time for to save his life is challenging but that i dont get the sense that we are. In fact, i know were not to be honest. I know were not dealing with it now. That makes it hard because its in vain if were not going to get our all of our Health Care Workers everything that they need. And, you know, chris, its disturbing this is happening. I dont think america knows. The news is not sharing with us what our Health Care Workers are seeing and being asked to do, and its shameful. It is shameful. Now in the face of pleas like that, the white house disagrees there are shortages of key supplies. They say there are enough ventilators at hospital beds to go around even in new york. The situation about ventilators, we were reassured in a meeting with our colleagues in new york that there are still icu beds remaining and theres still significant, over 1,000 or 2,000 ventilators that have not been utilized yet. But to say that to the american people, to make the implication that when they need a hospital bed its not going to be there or when they need that ve ventilator, its not going to be there. We dont have evidence of that now. Its our job collectively its our collective job to make sure that doesnt happen. Right now you can see the cases are concentrated in highly urban areas. There are other parts of the states that have lots of ventilators and other parts of new york state that dont have any infections right now. So we can be creative and meet the need by being responsive. Theres no model, no reality on the ground where we can see that 60 to 70 of americans are going to get infected in the next 8 to 12 weeks. Associate professor in Biomedical Technology at the university of Reading School of pharmacy. Thanks for joining us this hour. You just heard those comments. What do you make about the supply problems across the world . Yeah. I mean, it echos situations here in the u. K. Weve heard similar things in italy and i believe the same thing would have happened in china. I think the comments at the end are most powerful, that we would respond. Everybodys been incredibly creative to try and fix these gaps. I think we have to be honest to say there are many Front Line Health Workers who havent had those supplies provided to them yet because its such a complex situation. So much needed to be done at once, very quickly. Its about allocating supplies and making contingency plans. Its about forward planning. That seems to be where there are shortfalls. I think i could be critical in certain circumstances. Plans could be made some weeks or even months ago but i myself was planning to go ahead as normal this month. So even with the best foresight, were not very good at responding ahead of times. Its only now when the situation starts to get really bleak in some countries that were starting to scramble to catch up. And what do you make about the push for a vaccine . How soon do you think that could be out and about . Yeah. So i like to sort of emphasize that weve made Great Strides as a global vaccine Discovery Community to speed up the process of vaccine discovery. Its going to be much quicker than any vaccine thats been developed before. We must nt rely on a vaccine. It could be 12 to 18 months even if the vaccines were trying work and are safe, that takes time. Thats a lot of people that might be impacted. Lets talk about treatments then. In terms of what nurses are having to deal with, doctors are having to deal with around the world, is there anything that can ameliorate what theyre experiencing . And i know theres been a lot of controversy about certain zplugs. Yeah. I think we need to be a little bit patient and be reassured that medics are incredibly resourceful. Because its a new infection, these are cases of acute respiratory infection taking a slightly different forms to ones weve seen before. What we will see is increasing refinement and protocols. Again, whats really good is people are sharing as quickly as possible their best possible successes. So all of the emergency medicine doctors in italy are sharing their experiences and everybody around the world is quickly learning the best combination, time to ventilate, all of these details. Well find over time we can steadily reduce the impact and make these patients recover quicker and more safely. And i think all of us are trying to think positively, not get too negative to look for the Silver Linings here. I know a lot of people are perhaps enjoying spending extra time with their families if they can. After the dust settles, perhaps in two years time even, you say the vaccine might even take 18 months, do you think people will have greater respect for scientists, medical professionals . Theres been a trend of ignoring medical professionals. Weve seen it with the antivaccer movement. I hope so. What i dont want to see is people suggesting that theres an over hype or that the scientists are trying to say its too big a problem. These are real deaths and real harm happening across the world and to everybody, and its a really dangerous disease. So i think that could be a really positive thing, to see how quickly we can respond and to sort of relearn how we do medicine and make use of technology in a really High Pressure situation. I think well be able to applaud innovators and applaud the role that big science and also Community Action can take in tackling this worldwide outbreak. Yeah. Even just the folks who are at home trying to sew masks. Appreciate your perspective. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. In new orleans an official warns that the coronavirus is the disaster to define our generation. Louisiana is seeing a massive, massive spike in cases. Right now more than 2300 people there have the virus with more than 500 cases reported on thursday alone. Ed laf vvandera is in new orlea. Reporter the focus is shifting to louisiana. A state that may have the fastest growth rate of infections in the country. Were not doing as well as we should. Not when we know what is coming down the road in the not too distant future. Reporter there is an urgent demand for medical supplies increasing by more than 500 in less than 24 hours. The governor says that time is running out. Ventilators and protective equipment are in short supply and hospitals in new orleans alone could lack the capacity to provide proper care by next week without outside assistance. We need resources from the federal government to unlock the chains and tear them down in the state of louisiana so we can meet our people where they are and give them the services that they desperately need, particularly our Health Care Professionals on the ground working tirelessly. Reporter the ceo of lsus Health Care Services division say some have resorted to buying hospital gowns on ebay. Other extreme measures are underway to get the basic medical supplies they desperately need. Making masks from office depot, plastic covers that you put on documents that youre trying to make look formal and putting string and punching holes in them. Health experts are monitoring six clusters including a Retirement Community where as of tuesday 11 people have died of covid19. A growing theory for the rapid spread is last months mardi gras celebration in new orleans, taking place weeks before the governor issued a stay at home order. The first case of covid19 was from an individual who tested positive in the new orleans area 13 days after the end of the iconic party, which draws thousands from all over the world. Officials say they believe the patient contracted the virus locally. We had over a million and a half people in the city including international visitors. All attending parades daily. I have spoegs jek to the political officials in new orleans and in the state of louisiana. Theyre now shutting things down in a very vigorous way. It is likely that that should have been done a little bit sooner. Reporter governor John Bell Edwards warns that louisianas current trajectory is not sustainable and compliance is crucial for the states wellbeing. Our future from where we are today with the curve that we are on is not promising. Reporter this is the scene on bourbon street in the french quarter. It has not been this quiet in this famed Party District since Hurricane Katrina 15 years ago. This is a city well accustomed to staring down the eyes of hurricanes, but the eye of a storm like a viral pandemic is not something the city is used to. Ed lavandera, cnn, new orleans. Thanks, ed, for that. So the new orleans mayor spoke with Cnns Wolf Blitzer just a few hours ago and he asked why mardi gras was allowed to go forward this year . She said she would have canceled the festivities if she had access to the data she needed to make an informed decision. If red flags were given i would say at the federal level, leadership matters. While i was the first in the state of louisiana to stop social gatherings, i had to cancel the st. Patricks day parade. You know, all hell broke loose when i did that, but it was necessary. So given data, allowing science to lead us, it does matter and leaders on the ground, we rely on the facts to make decisions for the people that we serve. Given no red flags, we move forward. In hindsight if we were given clear direction, we would not have had mardi gras and i would have been the leader to cancel it. Strong words there. So the coronavirus outbreak is certainly taking a toll on First Responders in new york city. The Police Department says more than 10 of its uniformed officers called out sick on thursday. Almost 300 officers and more than 50 civilian workers have tested positive for the virus. And more than 3 million americans making unemployment claims. That was only last week. Thanks for that report. Stories are being felt across the world. Now a recession in the u. S. Might already be here. The Federal Reserve chief says the u. S. Economy could recover, but the pandemic has to be under control first. Jerome powell said the fed has more ways to fight the economic meltdown even though rates are already at zero. When it comes to this lending, were not going to run out of ammunition. That doesnt happen. We may well be in a recession but i would point to the difference between this and a normal recession. Theres nothing fundamentally wrong with our economy. Quite the contrary. Dr. Fauci said the virus is going to set the timetable, and that sounds right to me. Well, the house will soon vote on the senates historic 2 trillion stimulus package but theres no guarantee it will pass. Lets talk about all of this with christine romans. Christine is in new york. Hi. Good to see you again. Lets talk about unemployment. The piece hits home how so many families will be struggling in the summer. And you multiply that by thousands and thousands and thousands across the country, you get to 3. 2 million number, more than 3. 2 Million People who filed for unemployment benefits. What ive been hearing is the number was probably even bigger than that because so many people couldnt get through to their state unemployment offices, right . The websites went down. The phone lines are jammed. So many people rushing to file for unemployment benefits. I think were going to see that rush for the benefits over the next few weeks. Heres the thing though. I mean, this is what it looks like when you shut down an economy on purpose, right . Were doing this on purpose, the government is, so you can prevent an even bigger Public Health problem, get ahold of the spread of the virus and hopefully reopen the economy in an orderly way on the other side of that. Thats the hope. In a way, these numbers are terrifying but not really that surprising. So what do you make of the stimulus package . Should a lot of these folks be flying back to washington just in case . They need to get this done. I dont like to call it a stimulus package. It doesnt stimulate anything, this is stopping the bleeding. Stimulating might have to come later in more money being spent and i know thats crazy when you look at how big this is. The biggest bailout undertaking in history. 2 trillion. Its a gargantuan bill. It might not be enough depending on the time line. Theyll have to get it done. The president wants to sign it by today. Markets have already baked in that this is done and theres more bailout money, more relief, more rescue, more stimulus coming down the pike. Youve seen three days of huge stock market gains because theres the feeling that the money will be flowing from the fed and congress. One of them even said this week, but that hasnt happened. So now theyre saying that its coming soon. Theyre confident its coming soon and the figures do seem to back them up. The fatality figure you mentioned, the latest increase was a 19 increase but the previous day that was down from 27 . For those going into the intensive care ward, the latest increase was 16 down from 20 a day earlier. So some encouraging information there but there have been ups and downs. For instance, on the medical equipment that spain is trying to desperately get into testing kits, the government announcing thursday they had bought a series of kits, a lot of them, from a Spanish Company that imported them from china. It had the European Union quality symbol on it. Spain following protocol tested it in their National Reference lab and it didnt work. It didnt give the data that would tell you whether you have coronavirus or not in enough cases so that had to be discarded. Thats one of the setbacks. Meantime, they are expecting 500 million worth of new testing equipment, masks, gloves coming in over the following weeks. Meantime, briefly theres been just a terrible human toll here, especially in Senior Citizens homes. Most of the patients who have died are over 70. Officials say most of them in hospital. Several hundred have been in Senior Citizen homes including two dozen in one home. We are seeing spaniards, including a friend of mine on thursday went with their family to get their mother, elderly, to bring her back home because she doesnt have the virus.
