Thank you again for joining us. Our top story, the white house now thinks it is possible u. S. President donald trump will she impeached. And then tried in the u. S. Senate where republicans hold a slim majority. Cnn has learned administration lawyers are building a defense with the help of two republican congressmen, jim jordan and mark meadows are among the few republicans who have attended the closed door depositions. Meanwhile, the president is shoring up support among Senate Republicans and his base. At a rally friday night in mississippi, he warned his supporters that a vast deep state conspiracy was trying to drive him from office. The deranged impeachment witchhunt. To me, its a dirty word, not a good word. Totally phony deal. They know it, Everybody Knows it. The impeachment inquiry has not been all bad for the president. His campaign claims can its been great for fundraising. Cnns Katelyn Collins has that story. Those in favor, please say aye. On the heels of the house vote that could lead to his impeachment, President Trump is taking the Defense Strategy into his own hands. He is the war room. Telling the Washington Examiner hes considering reading the transcript of his call with the ukrainian president as a fireside chat on live television. His own aides have testified that they were alarmed by that call. Asked if he was being serious, press secretary Stephanie Grisham declined to offer any specifics. Sure, absolutely. When . I dont have any timing. Trump believes reading the call aloud will show people he acted appropriately. And as democrats move to the next phase of his campaign, hes bringing impeachment into it. Trump says he believes this will backfire on democrats, but a new poll from abc and the Washington Post reveals americans are sharply divided. 49 say he should be impeached and removed from office while 47 say he shouldnt. Despite those numbers, the white house says impeachable appears inevitable. We are prepared for an impeachment to happen, yes. The president says his oneman war room doesnt need any help, telling the examiner, i already have good people. Hes hired no new communications aides since democrats launched their problem. And its been 235 days since the last press briefing. Whenever its time. I think right now were doing just fine. The stall in strategy is coming as House Democrats prepare to take their investigation public and Speaker Pelosi is preparing her decision to move forward. We have no choice. We took an oath to protect and defend our democracy. That is what he has made an assault on. If republicans have a higher oath to the president than he they do to the oath of office, thats their problem. Pelosi said during that interview, democrats have not made a decision about whether theyre going to impeach the president. Something the officials here at the white house believe that is a foregone conclusion. Katelyn collins, cnn, the white house. At least four Administration Officials are scheduled to testify about ukraine on monday, whether they actually show up for the closed door depositions is another matter. U. S. Energy secretary rick perry had not asked to give a deposition on wednesday, but he has declined. A statement from the Energy Department said perry might be willing to appear at a public hearing at a later date. Perry is planning to step down from his cabinet post at the end of the year. Lets talk about these developments with thomas gift. He lectures on Political Science at University College london. Thomas, good to see you. Thanks for being with us. Good morning, natalie. Good morning to you. Trumps communication chief said of the oneperson war room that hes established that he is the war room. Is that a good thing, to let mr. Trump be in charge of the white house fight against impeachment . I think this is typical trump bravado. This is a war room of one. Trump has, from the very beginning, said that he really likes to communicate directly with the American People. So his weapon really here is his twitter account. Hes talked about the possibility of having a fireside chat where he would read the transcript of his phone call with the ukrainian president aloud to the American People. He basically thinks that by circumventing the media and going directly to the American People hes more likely to make a compelling case. A fireside chat sounds so calm and soothing. He wants to own his own story. As you say, thats how hes run his presidency. But as evidence grows, that there was a quid pro quo with ukraine, how can he defend that phone call, thomas . Well, one, hes going to double down on his strategy that hes already taken to this point, which is basically say this is a perfect phone call. Theres nothing wrong with it. And critics can say all that they want but im right about this. So he will continue to use that familiar refrain. Second, i think that he will continue to hammer on about process. Hes going to complain that the procedures in place for this impeachment inquiry are unfair, that this is a partisan witchhunt, that this is president ial harassment, that hes not being given due process and so on. I think to some extent this has been an effective tactic for republicans so far, and it may be one reason why democrats ultimately decided to launch this formal inquiry through house resolution. And he raised 3 million on thursday, the day the house voted on the impeachment resolution. If Senate Republicans hold with him, will he play an impeachment in the house if it comes to that to his advantage somehow . Well, i think he certainly will dry. As he said, this has certainly been good for fundraising. I think what you could expect if republicans stand behind him in the senate is something that looks very similar to what happened coming out of the mueller report. Certainly not an exoneration, but hes going to call it an exoneration and say this is more evidence of a partisan operation that is out to get him. So this is typical trump language. Its certainly nothing new. I think its been to some extent successful so far in terms of mobilizing his base. Maybe not necessarily so in terms of getting swing voters. But i think hes going to hammer this strategy going forward. The latest impeachment poll Shows Americans neck and neck. Should trump be impeached and removed . Yes. 49 , no 47 . What does that tell you, those numbers . It shows that the American People are deeply divided. We have seen a growing support for impeachment and we have seen a drop of Approval Ratings for President Trump among republicans. So it does suggest that maybe there are some cracks in the republican base, but he certainly still has this very staunch base of support. I would also say that the poll numbers look even more contentious in a lot of the battleground states. And so this is going to be the big question before who is going to win the political battle here, democrats or republicans going into 2020. The swing states are where its all at yet again. Thomas, we appreciate your insights. Thank you for joining us. Thanks, natalie. The impeachment inquiry giving plenty of ammunition to democrats vying to unseat President Trump. Mny of them gather in a key state as their numbers dwindle by one. We look at who is out, who leads the pack, and who is enjoying a bit of a surge. Thats coming next. In the race for the white house, a once little known candidate finds himself neck and neck among top tier democrats. Im talking about Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of south bend, indiana. He is trying to position himself as the most electable candidate and the best to take on president donald trump. And im talking about hope and belonging. Sounds open mystic to you for a time like this, fine. Call it optimistic, but do not call it naive. Because i believe these things not based on my age, but based upon my experience. The purpose of the presidency is not the glorification of the president. It is the unification of the American People. He made those remarks at a dinner in iowa, an event that helped propel barack obama ahead of Hillary Clinton in 2008. And while many of the other 2020 candidates spoke at a same dinner, its buttigieg that is getting compared with former president barack obama. Our jeff zeleny was there. Change that america can believe in. At this point in that president ial campaign, this 46yearold senator from illinois was still an underdog, but slowly start to go catch fire. This year, the youngest candidate in the race is also on the move. Are you ready to go into that hall and leave no question about who has the momentum in iowa right now . Its too soon to know if Pete Buttigieg will follow the rise of barack obama, but hes turning some of the same heads in iowa like terry and john hale. Does he remind you of senator obama . Absolutely. Its the intelligence. Its that cool composure. Its the ability to be president ial. Pete is catching on. The more people that see him, the more people that support him. It was 12 years ago when obamas long shot candidacy turn the corner here, dazzling thousands of democrats at the partys state galla. Two months after that speech, he won the iowa caucuses. Pete and obama both have a certain amount of pragmatism to them. At a recent rally, terry introduced the mayor and right now she says she feels like she did in 2007. The energy and the excitement and the positivity and the hope, thats what i feel at events for pete. And i have not felt that sings barack obama. You didnt feel it four years ago . No, no, i didnt. No. Buttigieg was watching that race closely, volunteering for obama. Its whats going on on the ground that serves you well when the caucus day actually rolls around. Both men represent a fresh face and are calling for change. I believe that we need a new generation of leadership to sfep over. Same Old Washington textbook campaigns just wont do in this election. The Buttigieg Campaign is embracing the comparisons, trying to use its 23 million cash on hand and the polls to build a modern day obamalike operation. The burden is now on buttigieg to meet these expectations. Barack obama came up as a grassroots organizer. And i think that made the whole campaign make sense and flow from him. It still remained to be seen if thats going to deliver on caucus day. With two new polls in the first two states that vote for the democratic nominee have solidified, buttigiek, Elizabeth Warren is leading along with Bernie Sanders and joe biden is slipping in support, although very much a top tier candidate. Inga joins me now from london. Shes chair of the uk chapter of democrats abroad. Thanks for coming on. Good morning. Good morning. Lets begin right there with what we just said about that poll. Warren is on top followed by Bernie Sanders and buttigieg and biden. Lets talk more about buj who is surging and quite popular in iowa. What is it about him that resinates with voters . He offered a very optimistic vision of a post Trump America there in iowa. Im generally supportive of all the top forecandidates we have. Theyre addressing Climate Change, as well. Buttigieg has a absolutely different spin. They all do. And its actually fantastic. I think some people find it nerveracking that we have so many candidates at this point. But i think were going to see things wilting down and thats a good thing. It makes us stronger and weve managed to temper our policies and ideas with these things. Biden, though, he hasnt had an exciting run in iowa. He apparently did not get a reducing response. But lets to what he said about donald trump and russia. Number one, is that Vladimir Putin doesnt want me to be president. And number two, donald trump doesnt want me to be the nominee. Spend a lot of money to make sure im not. Im flattered. Im flattered. Folks, look, we have got to. We have got to beat this man. He takes on trump directly, for sure. But something isnt working for joe biden. Why is he lagging behind somewhat . Well, you know, the run up to iowa is kind of a thing where people are tested in terms of the finances, how much support they get, where they are in the polls, if they resinate with the voters. And you see people resinating more. Even though, as i said, theres a lot of commonalities with what people believe. And were going to see this changing. You know yesterday, of course, beto orourke went out of the race and people are going to start making that decision. So by the time we get around to the iowa caucus in february and certainly by the time of super tuesday in march, something we will be having here in the uk and around the world, then were going to have a much smaller field. Lets look at pateo orourke and what he said when he dropped out on friday and then talk about it. We have to see at this point that we do not have the means to pursue this campaign successfully. And my service will not be as a candidate nor as a nominee of this party for the presidency. So there you have it. Certainly a disappointing moment for him. But why are our candidates in the Single Digits in the polls staying in, inga . Well, i think theres always that hope of a lastminute surge, a home that you can be one of the people in iowa at that dinner we saw earlier who sparks peoples imagination. Most of the candidates have a good team in iowa. After that, its new hampshire. If you can make your mark there as obama did in 2008, that will help. Although i do have to point on out that after obama did well in iowa, he lost to Hillary Clinton in new hampshire. This is going to be very much an up and down thing. But, again, i think were going to see this process as people say, do i have the ability to stay in this race . Do i have a message that will resinate . And, yeah, i think were going to see this happening in the run up to february. Elizabeth warren is polling very well. Some democrats worry, though, her programs are too ambitious. There it is right there. Are you concerned she goes too far to the left . Strongly agree 49 . Somewhat agree, 51 . Lets listen to her talking about coming on strong with bold ideas. Here she is. This is a time of crisis and media pundits, washington insiders, even some people in our own party dont want to admit it. They think that run something vague campaign that nibbles around the edges is somehow safe. But if the most we can promise is bus as usual after donald trump, then democrats will lose. Shes not nibbling around the edges, is she . Do you agree with her statement there . Because it does seem like some democrats are worried. I dont think democrats are worried. I think theyre feeling, to use the british expression, spoiled for choice. And part of the reason is we have people grappling with the real issues. We have someone is in the white house who is basically a Climate Change denier. We have people in the white house who isnt looking at peoples daily working situations, people who are waiting around for factories and things to come back. People like Elizabeth Warren, people like joe biden, people like Bernie Sanders are addressing those things. So its kind of real. And what i feel about the Democratic Candidates are doing is its real, its a reality check. We appreciate your insights. We will probably have an opportunity to speak again. Thank you so much, inga. Great. Thank you very much. And well have much more on warrens signature plan, medicare for all, in the next hour of cnn newsroom. At least one dozen wildfires continue to burn in california and at least three of them, the two pleasant fires, oddly named, and the forest fire all in the modern part of the state were caused by power lines. That fire began overnight and burned nearly 9,000 acres. Some 1300 firefighters are still battling those flames. Our nick watt is in santa paula, california. The maria fire scorching 5,000 acres in a few hours. This truck is going to have to go right through this wall of fire. Hats off to these firefighters for doing what they do, man, because it is a dangerous job. Especially in these wildland fires. Thousands evacuated their homes in danger, 500 firefighters, and some civilians doing whatever they could. There is now an end in sight. Based on the location, is he eventually going to run out of fuel . Still no cause for this blaze, but that 46 fire that popped up yesterday, burning three homes, police now telling us that was sparked by a vehicle fire after a police chase. But the underlying issue with all of the dozen or more fires burnling across california, low humidity, dry brush, and those high, hot, seasonal santa ana winds. The forecast does look good. The winds have dropped and there are no more santa ana wind events in the immediate forecast. So fingers crossed, no more destruction here in southern california, at least until the next time. Nick watt, cnn, santa paula, california. Some hope for that area of california. But derek van dam is here to tell us about will there be relief in other areas. Yeah. You know, the bottom line is yes, the weather conditions are improving. But that doesnt mean that the dry conditions arent still in place and the embers arent still smoldering. So the fire threat conditions especially in some of those notorious areas especially in the canyons and ravines in southern california. Ive struggled to find winds across northern california. This is good news, folks. We were experiencing wind gusts nearing 40 nrp. Youll see in a second that they are forecast to pick up, but nothing like what we experienced earlier in the workweek. The humidity still at critical conditions there. Here are the winds picking up across Ventura County. Los angeles, though, the good news is your winds will remain generally light. In Ventura County where weve been following the maria fire, still at zero percent containment. And i want to show you this video one more time. The time lapse of it showing the moment to where it quickly spread is phenomenal to me. You can see how fast the santa ana winds take the embers and spread that fire out and now its already been responsible for over 9,000 acres of charred wildlife excuse me, charred forestry and a few buildings have been impacted, as well. Get to the other video, youll is see some of the brave Fire Fighting men and women. That is a fire truck bringing equipment into the front lines of the maria fire. I feel like this is just such dramatic imagery telling the story of what is actually happening on the ground. Get back to the graphics, talk about how many people are battling this blaze. Can you imagine getting that knock on your door with only minutes to spare before a fire threatens your home . The kincaid fire in sanoma county, thats still 730 contain. This is the relative humidity. You would like to see that shading of green enter into the picture here because that means were going to get more of an onshore wind bringing in relief from the pacific ocean. No rain in sight, though. We desperately want to see rainfall. That fire truck going through that shows the heroic efforts of those men and women. What a hard job. And so many of them are volunteer, too. Tremendous. Thank you. Coming up, mass protests in Lebanon Force banks to close their doors for weeks, but now theyre being reopened. Youre looking at the latest protest to grip chiles capital and, as usual, Police Firing water cannon at civilians to break up the crowds of antigovernment protesters. Protests have paralyzed santiago for nearly two weeks. Mass protests are also raging across iraq and the unrest there is growing in both size and frequency, as you can see here in baghdad, where demonstrators held the largest rally since they began one month ago. Thousands poured on to the streets protesting corruption and unemployment. Flashes between demonstrators and Security Forces erupted again, adding to many people being injured. Since october 1st, at least 264 people have been killed. Some 12,000 wounded. And right here, these are live images coming to us from hong kong. Protesters are holding demonstrations. Police have released teargas and demanded they leave the unauthorized rally. Of course, hong kong has helped spark these protests around the world. Lebanon is another country thats experiencing large and often paralyzing protests. As weve seen in other parts of the world. Demonstrators there have filled the streets voicin their anger over the economy and corruption, but unlike other protests around the world, the protests in lebanon could entirely change the way the government is set up. Well have more on that in a moment. But first, ben wedeman brings us the latest on the countrys economic struggle. Lebanon banks reopened for their first time on friday after being closed for more than two weeks. There was no apparent panic, no runs on the banks. The central bank didnt place any currency limits, but left it up to individual banks to set limits on withdraws and transfers. It wasnt the black friday that some feared the lebanese leader did not fall dramatically against the dollar. Yet the fundamentals of the lebanese economy remained very shaky. It has the worlds third highest debt to gdp ratio. Half of government revenues go to pay interests on loans and the country is heavily dependent on imports. Speaking for the First Time Since the resignation of sahir, he said the new government should regain the trust of the people through accountability and transparency. Leb ann lebanon has no clear idea on when a new government might actually happen. You heard ben mention the resignation of president hariri. Constitutional reform in 1989 nearing the end of lebanons civil war divided the 128seat parliament equally between christians and muslims. Under a 1943 agreement, the head of state is a merinite christian. Right now, the Prime Minister a sunni muslim. Mr. Hariri and the Parliament Speaker a seeiis sheite muslim. This country shows the largest age groups being in the mid 20s and 30s. The median age in lebanon is 31. Thats older than several countries including india, but younger than others including china, the uk and germany. For more on this, were joined by miss yaya. Thank you so much for talking with us. First up, the Prime Minister has resigned saying my call to all is to provide safety and peace for lebanon to prevent economic collapse before Everything Else. Is his stepping away likely to bring about some of these changes that he wants to see . Hi. Thank you for having me with you. His move came about as a result of pressure from the street by protesters and the fact that his key allies, and key partners in government were not budging on any changes in the cabinet to just give some concessions to the protests. So he found himself basically caught between a rock and a hard place. Will this resignation trigger the kind of broad ranging changes that people are looking for . I sincerely doubt it. The Political Parties in lebanon, the political sectarian parties in lebanon have a real stranglehold on the system. Theyre embedded in most state institutions. Theyve been using state institutions to guarantee their own sustainability. So it would be very difficult to, at this point in time, for this system to enter any change. This is where i think the protests need to continue. And those protests are due to economic stagnation, corruption, the failure of government to provide basic services. I remember covering the garbage pileup from about three years ago. Garbage wasnt being picked up and apparently that problem has polluted the mediterranean, too. How bad are things for the average person . Theres the garbage, by the way. Were seeing it. And the garbage problem four years down the road still has not been resolved fully. It is bad. People are seeing i mean, this doesnt come out of the blue. Its been building up for quite some time. People are seeing their savings disappear. Theyre seeing their pensions disappear. As the threat to destabilize the currency is increasing just in the last week. The cost of basic goods increased between 15 to 30 . So unemployment is quite high. Lots of University Graduate students come out and they have no jobs. They graduate and they have no jobs. The prospect of finding jobs outside lebanon, the joke always was lebanons best export is its human resources. Today in this global atmosphere, that prospect is no longer really there. The gulf is downsizing in terms of its theyre not accepting they dont have any Job Opportunities as in the past. Europe, with Everything Else going on there on the economic front, but also the xenophobia, they dont want people coming from this region. So there is a real crisis. This is a young generation that finds its highly educated with no prospects in terms of employment, but also realizing that this system has done nothing for them. This is a sectarian system that is frankly one that propagates equal opportunity views. I. E. The political elite gain from the system, but everybody else loses. Whether youre sunni, shia, orthodox, jews, it doesnt matter. Everybody is losing. Right. And i think thats kind of just yeah. I want to ask you about that. Dividing a government along sectarian lines, do you think there will be a concerted effort to change that system . I think this has started. There is a relation among the political elite that something fundamentally has changed in the country. I think were seeing and were still grappling with the implications. But were seeing fundamentally socialism change and people think about how they want to be governed. This national awakening, this sectarian system is not protecting anybody and its propagating the misery of ordinary lebanese. How this is going to build up, it will take a long time. I dont see the new cabinet once its formed. Even if a new cabinet is formed, i dont see them Holding Early elections as has been demanded by the protesters. There may be some processes to end the power sharing, but this will take a very long time. Basically, were asking the political elite to commit elective suicide. They depend on this to justify their existence. And you dont see the political elite in many count countries doing that, do you . Absolutely not. The militant group his hezbollah is one of the main Political Parties. Could it or any other group dominate the Political Landscape . Not necessarily. Hezbollah relies on politics. All the other Political Parties by ending the sectarian system is also a threat to them. Its an existential crisis for all of them. The way they could come to dominate is if they decide this power sharing, theyre not able to reach an agreement, and hezbollahs reactions until now have been driven by this perception of, a, they dont know how to handle dissent. Its the the party doesnt really operate. Its military and religious doctrines. These are the two main pillars of the party. So they dont know how to handle dissent within their own community. Theyve been trying to depict these demonstrations, some sort of a challenge to their legitimacy, which they werent. They were about the socioeconomic conditions, the mismanagement of the country on a political and economic front. Now theyve come back and said no, these protests are legitimate. The only way they can dominate the country is if they take the vision that were going to turn the tables on everybody and the Prime Minister is closely aligned with us and to hell with everybody else. But then that spells, really, the potential for the country to slide once more into a civil conflict. We will cross our fingers for lebanon. They deserve better. This is such a challenge. Thank you so much for your expertise. Thank you for joining us. Pleasure. Thank you for having me. And to look at the protests in lebanon and iraq is one of your top stories online.
