Im George Howell from cnn headquarters in atlanta. Newsroom starts now. 4 00 a. M. On the u. S. East coast. And the United Kingdom is accusing iran of illegal interference when it sees the british flag oil tanker. The u. K. Says the oil tanker was in omani waters when irans military captured it friday. The u. K. Says, no doubt, it is a move of retaliation because britain seized an arriranian oi tanker in gibraltar. They see this as a tit for tat situation. Grace one was defitained legall because it was carrying oil to syria. It was forced to sail into iran. This is totally and utterly unacceptable. It raises very serious questions about the security of british shipping and, indeed, International Shipping in the straits of hormuz. Nato, france and germany have condemned the action. But the United States secretary of state says tehran does not seem like it wants to change its behavior. Weve seen no indication that the iranians are prepared to fundamentally changed their direction. They do the things around the world. You can watch their actions. These are actions that threaten. We saw the statements of the foreign minister. I spoke to him yesterday. These are not the actions of a country that looks like its headed in the right direction. Heres why this all matters the u. K. Has advise ed british ships. They are warning to exercise caution there. Matthew chance joins us here. This already dangerous situation, could easily tilt in the wrong direction, could it not . It certainly could. Its a dangerous situation here. You join me on the gulf of oman, just a few miles from the exact point in the persian gulf region, where that ship was intercepted a couple of days ago. Its a point of the latest point of conflict. The two childrountries have bee trading comments. The british calling the seizure unacceptable. The iranians putting across comments saying the british should reign in those that should stoke tensions. This is more than a bilateral dispute of britain and iran. You have to set it against the backdrop of the tensions in the region, particularly between the United States and iran, which has seen allegations about iran in the persian gulf region. Its been a buildup of military forces in the region, as well. Its easy to see, even though the british say they want this to be resolved diplomatically, its easy to see how an incident like this could escalate until a broader, wider kind of problem and even ignite a hot conflict in this persian gulf region. Absolutely, matthew. Has there been anything coming from iran, in response to what britain is saying, where it needs to be released or there will be serious consequences. Theres been a comment saying the Political Forces in britain should be reigned in, those that want to escalate tensions in the statement he released. Iran has been, absolutely. Categor categor categorical, saying it was doing the right thing. Saying this ship was acting illegally. Saying it went the wrong direction in the strait of hormuz. They have broadcast video on state television on iran operation taking place. Iranian special forces on ropes on the deck of the ship and taking it into custody. Thats interesting. Thats the same tactics that were used by the british marines when they seize d the tanker of of gibraltar. What they said about the iranian tanker. And it has to be due process in the courts that decides the future and the fate of their tankers. Using the phrase that the british authorities have used, regarding the grace i. The iranians are saying that this is a symmetrical response. If there is a negotiation in the future, they can bring to the table. That tanker carrying iranian oil. Considering that, it would be highly unlikely to release it if it was a bargaining chip. Matthew chance, from the uae. Lets get some perspective with bobby in london. Hi, george. Theres always been a veil of plausible deniability when it comes to iran. In the latest, who did what and why . Is that part of the strategy as we see more of an assertive iran. It seems to be able to identify itself in its actions. In the matter of taking on this tanker, theres no doubt it was by iranian authorities. Iranian authorities have owned it and claimed it. They put out videos showing, that their own people did this. Iran does when iran is confronting the rest of the world, most of the time, it does it through multiple channels. And some of them, which carry a bit of plausible deniability to fire rockets in yemen, this happened yesterday, and got lost in all of the news. They use the irgc, the revolutionary guard, to directly do provocative and confrontational things. Iran likes to have it both ways. Thats what its doing right now. Iran has threatened before to shut down the strait of hormuz. Whether they could actually do that, thats an entirely different question. How much power does iran have . How much leverage there . Its a narrow strait, and a quarter of all of the oil movement, takes place through that strait. Oil companies and Insurance Companies that underwrite the traffic, tend to be skittish. Iran doesnt have to do a great deal to make the oil industry nervous and prices up. Can they actually stop all shipping through the strait . Theres more shipping vessels and it gives the oil tankers a certain some amount of protecti. If they decide they dont want to take the risk, iran doesnt have to do a great deal. They just convey a threat that theyre going to do things like this, pick up civilian tankers. Sometimes tankers have nothing to do with irans conflict with the west. That will be enough. You dont have to close the strait, just stop the use of the strait. Western powers have ramped up resources in that region. If you consider the number of bases surrounding iran, how much leverage does the u. S. Have, to put pressure on iran, beyond the sanctions already in place. The u. S. Sanctions as you put out have reached a stage where theres only incremental pain that you can inflict on the iranians. Other european countries, germany, france, european union, are thinking of applying their own sanctions. Were getting to a stage where the impact of the sanctions is already so substantial, theres not a lot more that can be done to add to it. So, that part of the pressure on iran is beginning to run we dont have that many more options left. Bobby ghosh, we appreciate your time and perspective today. Well stay in touch with you. Thank you. Anytime. U. S. President trump is trying to get an american rapper out of a swedish jail. Swedens Prime Minister says their court system is completely independent and wont be swayed by outside pressure. The president told the Prime Minister of that nation, asap rock, she not a flight risk and vouched for his bail. David culver joins us from london. Good morning to you. What do we know about this assault allegation and president trumps involvement in this case. Hi, natalie. Interesting its reached the oval office. The president taking great interest in this, so much so, he has used part of his weekend, his saturday, to call the Prime Minister of sweden, spending about 20 minutes on the phone with him, were told. The president discussed it from the oval office with reporters on friday. Why does he care about this . And how was it brought to his attention . It comes from First Lady Melania Trump and kanye west. With all of the pressing matters on trumps agenda right now, including raising tensions with iran and north korea, hes using his political sway for this. The situation in sweden, that the president refers to, involves jailed american rapper and producer rakheem mayers. Who goes by asap rocky. I can tell you that his support from the Africanamerican Community in this country. Reporter asaps 10 million instagram followers have not heard from him for three weeks now. The artist is in custody in stockholm. Swedish authorities detained him on suspicious of assault in connection with a brawl on june 30th. This edited video posted by tmz, appears to show asaps involvement. But other videos paint a different story. We dont want problem with these boys. They keep following us. Look at this. Asap telling his fans these men kept following them. Alleging they threw headphones at his bodyguard. The Stockholm District Court said that asap should stay in custody until july 25th. The rappers lawyer said the courts decision was expected but unfair. The lawyer says his client, quote, believes he was assaulted and acted in selfdefense. President trump tweeted he called swedens Prime Minister and told him that asap, quote, was not a flight risk and offered to vouch for his bail. Despite the scandinavian country not having a bail system. Kim kardashian thanking him for helping asap reform. I appreciate the president trying to help him. While youre at it, can you let the kids out of cages . A reference to the migrant crisis along the u. S. mexico border. As for how swedens leader is response responding through a spokesman. He spoke with president trump. He characterized it as a that the president neither can nor influence the judicial process. They will talk further in the coming days. Another aspect of this, hes trying to help a black rapper. At the same time he has been called racist. Even people in the u. S. And World Leaders, are calling that abhorrent and racist. Interesting timing. The timing cannot be overlooked, natalie. It comes the same week theyre trying to, the administration, calm the racist rhetoric. And World Leaders have started to respond to that. And you look at a proeess conference, that was gathering in the oval office on friday. This being important to the Africanamerican Community. Many friends of his within the Africanamerican Community. He goes on to say, something to the effect of, this is not just for the Africanamerican Community, but for americans as whole because were all one. Perhaps trying to contrast the racist rhetoric that has reverberated. David culver for us from london. Thanks, david. Across the United States, extreme heat is punishing millions of people. The headlines were following this hour. The United Kingdom says a British Oil Tanker was in omani waters when it was seized friday. The u. K. Accused iran of illegal interference in commercial shipping. The tanker and its crew remain in iranian custody. President trump is trying to win the release of asap rocky. Mr. Trump reached out to swedens president to vouch for his bail. But sweden doesnt have a bail system. The space station has a new crew that consists of an american, italian and a russian. They were carried there in the soyuz vessel. Alexandria acasio cortez accused the president of enacting policies all about ethnicity and racism. We do not have to acquiesce to the president s racism because he is using racism. He is stoking White Supremacy and he is allowing, frankly, nino nazi groups to go unchecked because thats a key part of rousing his base. But we cannot allow and give in to that. What our response has to do is in turning up and turning out an electorate. He doesnt have to win districts. He needs to win states. The New York Times looked at that in a new report. It said the president s advantage in the Electoral College could be larger than it was in 2016. His campaign may do better, even if it loses the international vote. It may lessen the cost of actions, including the racist tweets, that includes orr tez. Lets put this in perspective with james boyes. Weve seen the president attacking the four congresswomen of color. As democrats respond in contrast, does that knock them offbalance from commanding their own message, heading into 2020 . Good morning, george. Theres no doubt about it, from the moment he ascended the elevator in trump tower, hes been effective at dominating and guiding the political narrative of the United States. And so long as the Democratic Party failed to have a single, coherent message, or leader going into the election cycle, i think he will continue to do just that. And of course, his goal, quite frankly, is that the democrats remain divided, as long as possible. Ultimately, in his view, to have somebody lead that party into the election, as far to the left as possible. Hoping for a George Mcgovern figure to emerge and lead the party. Wi with the upcoming democratic debates to be seen here on cnn. What must democrats do to bring attention to the issues that are important to them and their electora electorate . They have to stop fights amongst themselves. Theres a lot of capped dates running. It seems, quite frankly, anyone who has taken out a subscription to tthe New York Times, is going to be president this time around. Thats going to play into Donald Trumps hands. They need to coalesce around a single nominee and take the fight back to donald trump, if they have any hope to secure the white house in next novembers election. Anyone who has taken out a subscription to the New York Times. You got me there. Theres a divide on issues on immigration, health care, the move that centrists say could scare moderate voters away. Do you believe the push to polarity will help or hurt democrats in 2020 . Weve been seeing a drift towards the extremes of 2 left and the rig and the right, for several years. The Republican Party has been moving to the right. This last cycle, the Democratic Party moving further and further to the left. Thats very much, of course, in contrast to what happened in the 1990s, when there was a great deal more sentistism. What youre seeing with the polarization in america, is the sense that it is becoming incumbent upon somebody to get that to the ground. Mitt romney talked about the idea that america is split between 47 democrat and 47 republicans. And he was right then. Both parties were going to top into the 6 to win the president ial election. Right now, Donald Trumps policy was to keep doing what he did three years ago with a view he will win. In 2016, he was aided by the green Party Candidacy and the libertarians, both who hindered Hillary Clintons ability to win and were instrumental in the key states she lost. The democrats are making it easier for donald trump at this point. It plays into the information of the New York Times looking into polling data, where the president could have a big win statebystate, when it comes to the Electoral College. Should democrats be worried. The question, what is their message and are they able to put forward a single, cohesive message, given so many that are competing. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Protesters in puerto rico are not backing down until the island governor quits. They they have completely lost faith in his leadership. Thats next. Were the slowskys. We like drip coffee, layovers and waiting on hold. What we dont like is relying on fancy technology for help. Snail mail we were invited to a y2k party. Uh, didnt that happen, like, 20 years ago . Oh, look, karolyn, weve got a mathematician on our hands check it out now you can schedule a callback or reschedule an appointment, even on nights and weekends. Todays xfinity service. Simple. Easy. Awesome. Id rather not. As you can see, protests in puerto rico are still going strong. Thousands are demanding that the islands governor resign. He refuses to do so. The public outrage was sparked by a leak of offensive Text Messages between the governor and his aides. He aour Nick Paton Walsh has story from san juan, puerto rico. As the growing sense of momentum, now, really night after night. While the protest numbers are small, theyre noises and looking forward toward monday, where they hope they will possibly have hundreds of thousands, maybe a million organizers, of people on the streets, paralyzing parts of ann juan. Behind me, theres people that have been out all night long. The night before and the night before that, clashes briefly, with the same singular message. They want the governor to step down immediately. Sometimes profane in their slogans here, they found themselves joined on the streets from democratic candidates. One in particular told me he should resign immediately. A bit of an open question. The same political feeling that everyone is furious about. The governor is giving an air of business as usual. Giving indication that hes not contemplating resignation. The protests here, smaller in number but increasing in puerto rico. He responded to further allegations about him to benefiting anger rejecting that allegation. It doesnt make much of a difference, though, to many here. His mind is already made up. They will continue to grow in the numbers. Looking towards mondays process. And a growing sense of momentum, really, about how long the governor can really stay in power. Nick paton walsh, cnn, san juan, puerto rico. Protesters are taking to the streets in hong kong. Theyve been at it, now, for weeks, denouncing a controversial bill there. Were monitoring the protests as they get under way. The bill would have allowed extradition to china. Carrie lamb announced it was suspended but its not good enough for the protesters. And they want lamb to resign. As you see from this video, they are out in throngs. Anna coren is in the thick of it. Hello, anna. Its hard to believe that the protests have been going on for more than a month and a half. And theyre attracting hundreds of thousands of people. Were at the front with denise ho, the founder of the prodemocracy movement. Were at the halfway mark. This is going on more than an hour. Hundreds of thousands have turned out here for another sunday of protests. They are enduring the heat and the humidity, and they are not deterred. There is an incredible momentum. As you say, they want carrie lamb, to formally withdraw the extradition bill. Earlier this month, she declared its dead. Thats not guede enouood enoughe people. They want her to resign. Now, theres varying reports as to whether she said to beijing, she is willing to step down. Beijing saying, no, you have to stay in the job. Were hearing from her office, she is staying there and not going anywhere. She wants to improve her relationship with the people, with the protesters. But these people, natalie, they feel she has lost credibility. She has lost the faith of the people that she does need to step down. These people say she is not listening. The government is not listening. They are not responding to their demands. Thats to draw the controversial extradition bill, to set up an independent Police Investigation investigation into the police use of Excessive Force on the 12th of june. They also want the people who have been who have been arrested to be released. I want to just mention that over the weekend, Police Arrested three people here in hong kong over the largest seizure of explosives. We dont know if its in relation to these protests. But they say that two kilograms of explosives used by alaka qae by isis, they were seized in a we warehouse in the new territories, along with extradition pamphlets, that three men between 25 and 27 have been arrested. We cannot make any connection between the arrests and todays protests, but police are calling on everyone to be vigilant. Theres a Police Presence here. But, this is extremely peaceful. These protesters are extremely peaceful. They dont want violence. They are just here to deliver a message to carrey lamb and the government they want in withdrawn. She said she killed the bill. What is difference between killing the bill and being formally withdrawn . Thats a good question. At the end of the day, natalie, it comes down to legalities. To formally withdraw the bill, she would have to say those words and the process goes through the legislature. She has come out saying, the bill is dead, it will not get up into her legislature. At the end of the day, these protesters do not trust her. They dont trust this woman that tried to push through the controversial extradition bill, that would allow anyone in hong kong to be arrested and charged with an offense, and to be extradited to mainland china. No one trusts chinas legal system. And the fear, natalie, is that hong kongs its freedoms are being eroded. China is encroaching on haong kongs freedom. Since the british handed hong kong back to miainland china. Theyve only known what it is to have the freedom, to have the human rights to have an independent initial system. They dont want china to encroach on their ideals and freedoms and their values. They see it as seriously under threat. I should mention that its not just young people turning out here for todays protest. You have older people and families. Its a Cross Section of society that is coming to the streets. Its approaching 5 00 here local time. These protests started at 3 30 in the afternoon. Our cameraman is giving you an idea of the stream that is still coming. It is hot, natalie. Were in the middle of summer. We heard this man say free hong kong. They are fighting for the future of hong kong. The people here dont want china to think of hong kong as another big chinese city.
