The facts that we dont know are what happened inside that mosque. We just know that it was attacked during a time of prayer last night. And six people were killed during that attack. And you are in new york city. What has the mayor there said about this attack and what plans does he have for protecting mosques in new york . The mayor has quickly gone to twitter using social media to say that new york city stands with quebec, stands in solidarity with the muslim people and saying that they will be protect ed. Saying those highly trained, heavily armed teams that circulate around the city when attacks like this happen will be used to protect mosques around the city and protect those in muslim faut. But we will be seeing those teams circumstance lat around the city. The president signed this executive order fridays temporarily banning travel to the United States from seven muslim majority countries. And ever since that, theres been a lot deal of confusion on how far reaching it is. The white house is trying to clear things up saying the that green card holders, people with prm innocent resident status in u. S. , will be allowed in. But they will go through extra screening. Homeland security says no one is being detained from the initial group that was stopped at u. S. Airports. They have either been released or put on a plane back home. There has also been international backlash. In a Television Call over the weekend, the ban on Syrian Refugees violates the geneva conventions. President trump is pushing back at the trit schism of the travel pan saying hes trying to keep the country safe. He had shortstop words saying it will not improve security. These are people who are scientists and doctors and not people that you would expect to be carrying out any sort of attack like this. So this is the stories that youre hearing. Of course, there are people who support this in the United States. The government, the Trump Administration making their case. They didnt look at the ramifications of what they were doing. They didnt coordinate well across the different departments involved in this. Domestic politics and international politics, many of the things were seeing the Trump Administration do has this combination of factors. Trump is playing to his base. People have said this is going to be so harmful to the relationship that the United States has with other countries. Its going to make the United States be a country whose values and standards command less respect around the world. Its going to cause so many people to look on the United States differently and its making this administration look unreliable and unpredictable. Lets get that based on her own counterterrorism and National Security experience describes the latest executive order. I think you said as confusing, sloppy and even used incompetent in your writing. Explain your assessment. This is what we have seen come out of the Trump White House right now. They make a big deal of something. It actually ends up being a big deal in particular this executive order. Then when people are saying you havent planned out the details, they say its not that big of a deal. This exec ty order and a perfect case in point. It wasnt just the people detabed in airports. Its not just those seven countries but green card holders. Refugees from other countries. There was no clarification in the executive order. It took until late sunday night over 48 hours after the executive order to be released. Whether the hundreds of thousands of green card holders were subject to the exclusion and it turns out that the department of homeland skurlt said no. Its no way to run a government and its no way to support the First Responders on the front line like we have seen with the Border Patrol agents. Id like to read a bit from that oped. You say the executive order is um pli if ied. This is no way to run National Security strategy. The question here. Is the trump team make iing it as they go along is what you pose there. I any they are. I think theres a general distrust by the Trump Administration of what they call can the bureaucracy. They came in as the disruptive candidate and candidacy. I think they view governance as the same. The problem for them is that ideas and south bites are there. They have to be imploemted. Their e desire to come out with it assuming youre for t there was no interaction with the inner agencies. Department of Homeland Security had no insights. There are no to ro reviews and basic questions about what about people who are detained at the airports. What about people who are literally on flights. What about people with green cards. Those are the kinds of things that have to be impact hundreds of lives. Given your own expertise and knowledge, in your opinion, does this make america safe . I dont think its just my opinion. I think its the opinion of any serious counterterrorism, National Security expert, that this action, in fact, will do less to support our safety and security, will cause great antagonism with the countries that we share information and intelligence with. And to just pick up on what isis has said since the executive order applauding it for helping thunderstorm recruit and inflame the muslim world. We had two president s with bush and obama both jund that it could view as a wor on islam. With one, the President Trump has changed that narrative. I think you can see today from the department of Homeland Security were not choosing refugees based on their religion. Were going to give priority to those who are christians and muslims. Pu there was 325,000 people that came sbo america from other countries. Only 109 of them were stopped. A majority of them have already been let go. Were also allowing you with green card who are coming from these countries listed to allow them to come back into the so i think a lot of this has been overexaggerated and moved pretty smoothly thus far. What about a 5yearold . Why would a 5yearold be held for a number of hours before hes eunited with his mother . Whats the logic behind that . I think you have to have everyone thats being held from these kocountry its because thas what this says. Back in 2011 we had a sixmonth ban from the Obama Administration with Hillary Clinton involved in that as well from iraq. There was no one out there protesting. There were 5yearolds that would have been held then or anyone coming from the time u to vet them. Theres no system thats going to work perfectly. There are always going to be exceptions to the rule. Especially when youre dealing with something this big of an issue. But lets put this also in context. What donald trump said is three months, 90 days, were going to have a ban from seven nations. I do want to ask you about that, though. I want to know the logic and reasoning behind the choice of those seven nations on this travel ban. Many are questioning whether its targeting the right countries, given no attackers who have hit the United States come from those seven countries. But 9 11 attackers came are from three nations that arent ob that list. And pakistan is not listed either despite the fact one of the San Bernardino attackers came from that nation. So again, people are wondering and want to know the reasoning behind the choice of these nations. These seven nations were put on a list in 2015 by the Obama Administration under the department of Homeland Security. It originate d frd from preside obama buzz its not necessarily where the people are born. Its where they go to train as terrorism terrorists. You may have been one of the nations that you mentioned and they have attacked us. But they ended up training in afghanistan. Why did we go to afghanistan after 9 11 . The 9 11 attackers were being funded and gone through afghanistan. Not through their original nation where they were. This is a complex issue but if you say where were they trained and getting their funding it is the seven countries on this list and the same seven koun trus. This list is not something that donald trump made up. Barack obama and the department of Homeland Security put this list together in 2015. So also the president s plan has been get iting pushed back from prominent republicans. John mccain and Lindsey Graham issued a statement. Our government has a responsibility to defend our borders, but we must do so in a way that makes us safer and upholds all that is decent and exceptional about our nation. It is clear from the confusion at airports across the nation that President Trumps executive order was not properly vetted. Such a hayesy process risks harmful results and we fear this executive order will be a selfinflicted wound in fight against terrorism. E we werent in iraq or afghanistan. And yet they had no problem fighting a motive to kill us.
