Jim acosta joins us now, youre now on the streets of albuquerque. So what is the latest with police as they try to remove these protesters from the streets . Reporter yeah jon, were in the middle of downtown albuquerque, this entire intersection was shut down, was basically controlled by these antitrump protesters, but now you can see quirk police starteding to move in. They are on horse back and they are pushing these protesters out of this intersection where they were basically in control. With just a few moments notice, just a few moments ago, they started moving these bicycle rack barricades toward the crowd, and then these Police Officers in riot gear on horse back started pushing this crowd out of of this area. Thank you, sir, thank you. As you can see, there are protesters protesting against donald trump scattered throughout this area, they are dominating the scene right now. But jon and isha, the Albuquerque Police department are starting to get control on the situation. Okay. Theres a gentleman here right now in front of me saying this is what happens when you bring donald trump in here. Albuquerque police trying to get a handle on the situation. They are moving the protesters out of this area of downtown albuquerque, jon and isha. Stand by, we appreciate the live reporting from the scene. We can see the Mountain Police there among the protesters as we describe trying to move those protesters away from the intersection, lets bring in dan simon whos also out there in albuquerque. Dan, i know you have been out there for a little while. What kicked this off . What set off these angry scenes . Reporter well, it started when some of the protesters actually got through some Police Barricades and got through the front door of the Convention Center where donald trump was speaking, and then from there, things descended into chaos. Several of the protesters throwing bottles and rocks at police. And for the last few hours, youve had this chaotic situation on the streets. Jim acosta spoke a moment ago about police pushing the protesters here in downtown albuquerque thats all theyre doing. Theyre pushing them down the street. They are still here. You can see hundreds of them right here in the street, isha, holding the mexican flag and police are trying to do everything they can to get these people to go home. But they just want to stay put. They clearly are enjoying this moment for lack of a better word. They seem to be enjoying it, isha, and they want to have this sort of standoff with police. Its very loud out here as you can see these people on motorcycle revving their vehicles. [ revving engine ] and thats really what i can tell you at the moment, isha, police continuing to get these protesters down the street. Again, thats all theyre doing. [ revving engine ] no signs of them leaving whatsoever. And i have to tell you, im having a difficult time hearing you. As this guy on the motorcycle is revving so loud okay dan, were having trouble hearing dan above all of that noise right now. You can hear the revving of engines, people on the streets say yelling, they have mexican flags, very unhappy about Donald Trumps antimexican message his message was just antiimmigrant there who are obviously out there protesting. Jim acosta is still with us. There are also scened of protesters jumping on the police car. They set fires as well. Was this widespread violence or fairly concentrated in just a few areas . Okay, were still trying to get back to jim acosta, hes at another part of this protest. There you can see the police over horseback. The Albuquerque Police have moved into the area outside the Convention Center, theyre trying to move these protesters on as you can see they are determined not to leave, certainly not yet, keep in mind, that this rally, this Campaign Stop by donald trump ended more than an hour or so ago. These protesters are remaining outside. Our Political Editor is also with us. He is live in d. C. Right now. So, mark presston, is this something which we can now expect as this election moves closer to the conventions and beyond . Reporter well jon, no question about that. We should probably separate what were seeing out there and what weve seen at trump rallies in the past. Donald trump has been criticizing, rightfully so, for inciting violence who would then attack those who would interrupt his rallies. What youre seeing on your screen, were seeing antitrump protesters. Folks who are outside the Convention Center. Folks were very upset, folks who are themselves inciting violence and clashing with Police Officers who are only trying to keep the peace. Now to your point though, will we see this because of the rhetoric that donald trump has used that has incited folks like these to come out and do that . py happen as we head into cleveland, but i do think that it is worth pointing out that for both sides need to lower the temperature. Those folks outside right now, not all of them, many of them are peacefully protesting in what weve seen on social media is some of them have gone up to the Police Officers and thanked them for their service tonight, however, those clashing that are engaging in in violence, that are jumping on police cars, that are throwing rocks at Police Officers, while that is allowed, per se in our democracy in the sense that theyre allowed to express their opinions and thoughts, what theyre not allowed to do is engage in violence. We have seen it from Trump Supporters, and now were seeing it on the other side, jon. So mark, let me ask you this as we look at these scenes there in albuquerque, what are the political ramifications. What are the implications of all of this Going Forward . What do you see . Right . Great question because what is probably going to happen, if you are a donald trump supporter, youre going to look at these images and it is only going to harden your stance. If you are somebody who was on the edge who thinks that america has given away too much to immigrants or you believe that donald trump sl speaking a message that you believe in these images are only going to make you want to support him. Having said that, youll see people in the middle who seize this type of violence and will place the blame squarely at the doorstep of donald trump. He will support for this, theres no question about it, the question is though when we go into november, youre going to see a country very much divided, and youll see the Trump Supporters, and youll see the very likely Hillary Clinton supporters as she was on her way to become the democratic nominee. Okay, mark, hold that thought. Because, sorry to interrupt. Dan simon is on the scene there right now. He has an update on what is actually going on where he is because we know that the police have been trying to clear this crowd, dan. Reporter yeah, hey jon, police continuing to try to clear this crowd in downtown san francisco, you can see police on horseback pushing these protesters down the street. It is a very chaotic situation to say the very least. These people do not to want go home and ultimately i hate to say it, police may have to use some force against some of these protesters. All night they have shown remarkable strength in dealing with them, but as the crowd has become more unruly, police may be forced to escalate things a bit. And you can see theyre continuing to drive this crowd down the street, you can see people waving the mexican flag. The numbers arent quite what they were, jon, you can see its a significantly smaller crowd than it was only a few minutes ago. These seem to be the last of the people out here. And hopefully theyll come to their senses if you will. And go home. You can see and dan protester just tried to throw something at police. Dan, as you make mention of as you make mention of those who are still still out there, the crowd is still somewhat less than it was a short time ago, who is out there . Give us a sense of, is it predominantly young people. Are they predominantly hispanic, give us a sense of who is out tlo protesting right now. You know, creating these scenes were watching on our screens. Reporter these are mainly young people, im not quite sure if they were even at the trump event protesting or if these are people just causing trouble. Its really hard to tell. Im going to get back because sorry about that, isha, i have to make my way down the street. Im getting pretty close to a Police Officer on a horse. You make sure youre safe, dan, thats important. Make sure youre safe. Reporter it is quite crazy out here to say the very least. As dan simon repositions, dan, if you can still hear weve still got you, dan. Were still here, dan. Dan, just set the scene what is happening around you now . Reporter just walking down the street here police are just pushing people back and at a certain point, something has to give here. I dont know what its going to take for these folks to go home. Police doing everything they can. Short of using a street measures. Right now theyre just trying to use the horses to get people to push back. Dan, just moments ago, we saw the protesters moving those big skiffs, the big trash skiffs putting them in place, have they been using that to block the police on horse back and other vehicles as well . A makeshift barricades against the police . Reporter you know, i think police are kind of making things up as they go. Im not quite sure they fully anticipated this. In comparison to some of the other rallies weve been to were having trouble with dans communication right now, his audio, hold with us, dan, we to want go to jim acosta who is also in in downtown albuquerque outside the Convention Center. So jim, weve seen what is happening at dans location, what is happening where you are right now . Reporter im not very far from where dan is located right now. Were in the middle of downtown albuquerque as well. You can see this line of mounted Police Officers in riot gear. They are slowly, but surely clearing this protest out, block by block, theyre moving barricades as they walk. The horses are moving the protesters out of this area and as they do that, as they go block by block, this crowd is getting smaller and smaller. One thing that we can say is it looks like police are getting a handle on this, but just a few moments ago, we saw Albuquerque Police try to follow some protesters down an alley, those protesters moved dumpsters to block their path into that alley. We saw an article moved at one of those Police Officers and you could hear a Police Officer behind me now ordering this crowd to keep moving. One thing i can tell you, john, isha, we can smell what is basically burning rubber in there. Youve seen the plumes of smoke every few minutes throughout our coverage. Thats basically people screeching their tires like something out of fast and furious. Thats been kicking up a lot of smoke here in downtown albuquerque, but i could tell you just by covering this over the last couple of hours. Jon and isha, a crowd that was in the hundreds to one that is now in the dozens. It is starting to shrink down as these Police Officers move block by block to move these protesters out of this area. Jon and isha. Let me ask you this, as we take in these scenes, the crowds that gathered, whab it a spontaneous gathering . What this gathering, were these organized by any particular groups . What do we know . Reporter well, i think some of this was planned. There was some reporting before donald trump came to albuquerque that there were a lot of organizations in this area that were very upset with Donald Trumps immigration rhetoric, the governor of mexico, republicans, susan in a martinez, she refused to appear tonight. She was too busy. That was the answer she gave reporters, but shes been irritated with Donald Trumps rhetoric on immigration. And so yes, by and large, youre seeing the mexican flags being raised and waved here. There are a lot of people who live in new mexico who are proud to be americans, but they also are proud of their heritage. And so they take a lot of offense to what donald trump has said out on the campaign trail. I could tell you when we were inside that rally, and there were protesters sporadically being led out of that event, they were protesting against Donald Trumps immigration policies. And as they were being led out of the event, there were people inside chanting build that wall, build that wall donald trump was coming into a powder keg by coming to albuquerque, new mexico. This is a state that has a very high, it has the highest percentage of latinos in the United States when it comes to any state and so, it had to be expected that if he came to albuquerque, if he came to the state, he was going to need some resistance to his message and thats what he found here in albuquerque here to be the. Now obviously its a lot more tense, its a lot more chaotic than what we expected. Who would have thought we were going to see riot police on horseback, pushing people out of the downtown area, but thats precisely what were seeing right now. This is a situation were not supposed to see after political rallies here in the United States, but we have seen this time and again throughout the course of this campaign whether its chicago or kansas city where they had these pepper spray. There have been altercations between Law Enforcement and people who are just very much opposed to the candidacy of donald trump. Dan simons is also reporting from the midst of of this chaos and confusion as these protesters confront police as they try and clear this scene. It has been ongoing for more than an hour. Donald trump rally there, 4,000 or so people turned up. This is the scene outside right now. We will take a short break, but our continuing congress of this breaking news. As police are on horseback trying to clear the streets outside of a donald trump rally. Which ended a few hours ago. As you can see now, the police are trying to move this small number of protesters away, but there have been reports of bottles and rocks thrown. A door was smashed. A fire had also been lit. Mark preston joins us. Essentially as we look at the situation in albuquerque, was this expected by the Trump Campaign . Is this something that was making plans for or caught off guard . I think in many ways youre always expecting Something Like this to happen, perhaps not the level we have seen tonight. These are the antitrump protesters outside. We have an update, we just tell you what theyre saying right now on social media. Theyre saying that the donald trump protesters have left the area basically and the remaining contingent of protesters are only looking to cause trouble and be destructive. The protesters that we saw there earlier today and through the evening, the Albuquerque Police are now telling us that they have dispersed, but there is a new set of protesters that have come in that are just joining in the mayhem and the fir pictures if you have been watching tonight have shown rocks and bottles being thrown at the Albuquerque Police who have been protecting the coliseum where donald trump was speaking. Weve also seen them, these protesters or i guess would you even call them protesters a this the point, but these rioters jumping on Albuquerque Police cars. Sop at this point as our correspondents on the ground have told us, it is starting to get a little bit smaller than what we have seen earlier in the evening, but seriously still a important and serious situation were seeing in in albuquerque, jon. Mark, appreciate the update that you just gave there from the Albuquerque Police, do stand by for us, here in the studio, we have democratic strategist jay Jacobson John thomas, friend of the show, always good to have you with us, especially on a night like this as we look at the scenes in albuquerque. To be clear as you heard mark say, the donald trump protesters have left. This is a Different Group of folks that are out there causing trouble. Lets look at this, what are the political implications of thing likes this happening . Number one, im surprised that we havent seen more of this since we were in chicago we saw the large protests, its surprising that this is the first time after that event. It does underscore though that donald trump is going to have to face this throughout the campaign. The question is are these people just vocal decenters against trump or is this a larger statement about what americans think about our political process in general and theyre angry . I would say though, parading around with mexican flags does not help the cause in an american mexican. Some made the comment that this has been and credibly negative campaign on both sides for the democrat and the republican side. Bernie sanders calming from a revolution, scenes of chaos and anger in nevada with the Bernie Sanders supporters. So, when you have a campaign which is being run like this, and have all this anger which is being built up, this is the end result. And there is enough blame to go around on all sides here. I think this underscores the real challenge that donald trump has pivoting from the Republican Campaign where youre going up against 16 other republicans, pivot in your dividing amongst themselves. Pivoting to the general election where you have to unite the american voters. I think the challenge is, this is sort of defined as the political volcanic eruption that Donald Trumps campaign has become unfortunately. And i think it highlights the fact that hes going to have to make a swift pivot away from the divide and conquer campaign if he wants to coalesce support from independent voters who are going to deliver victory in november. Do you expect the premise that theres enough to go around not just the rhetoric, but also on the other side of politic z as well. Not this protests on the democratic side and only once in nevada. I think that was an anomaly. Weve seen this at every corner on the republican side and surrounding Donald Trumps campaign. Donald trumps not running as uniter, hes trying to tap into the anger of the electorate. This isnt what he had in mind. America is getting a raw deal. And lets Pay Attention to what is happening on the streets on albuquerque for a moment. The police are forming something of a line to the right of the screen, folks are still out there, they are still significant numbers and has dwindled greatly as jim acosta and dan simon have made the point. We want to bring obvious attention to what is happening a lot of movement and activity on the streets of albuquerque. And as mark preston made the point, these are no longer the antitrump protesters. These are just the stragglers who in the words of Albuquerque Police who want to cause trouble. The antitrump protesters essentially left a while back. Now we have the situation where it looks, i mean from a distance at least, young men who are confronting the police and are refusing to leave the streets of albuquerque and there is that line of police, you can see them there on horse back and obviously right now, there does only seem to be a few dozen people, not protesters, people remaining on the streets. Its 10 28 in albuquerque right now in new mexico. So this could go on for a while. You know, but john, you made the point that donald trump is tapping into anger, thats the anger which is getting him all of the votes, more votes in a primary election than any other republican before. The flip side of tapping into that anger is its sparking this kind of anger from those opposed to it. Sure. Theres good with bad here. Hes going to have to figure out hes not going to completely rid the protesters, i think theyre going to continue on as we saw in chicago and tonight, the protesters are doing what they desire which is political theater. They want us to cover it. And were giving them in essence what they want. Were going to see this continue through november. Dave, as you look at the pictures a z a democrat, and democratic strategist more importantly, what would your next move be here to kind of highlight this and to form a strategy off the back of it. What would that be . If im Hillary Clinton, im capitalizing on her brand new messages, were stronger together. Were united together. Shes trying to come up with a brand saying look, were all of this together and shes even trying to sort of reach out to moderate republicans, we saw that a couple weeks ago in in her closing remarks, and i think thats her brand moving forward. Shes going to come off as the rational, pragmatic leader who can bring americans together and move the country forward. Shes going to contrast that with donald trump being the divider and chief. Dave and jon, stay with us. In the meantime, well take a short break here, but continue to look at the live pictures from albuquerque as we go to break. Police there in riot gear with helmets on, carrying batons. The police on horseback behind them as they confront these remaining demonstrators outside that Convention Center. Welcome back, everyone, we to want bring you up to speed with the breaking news. These scenes out of albuquerque, new mexico, where police are trying to get control of these crowds that you see out there on the street. This all started as protests outside the donald trump rally a short time ago. Police trying to get people off the streets and send them on their way. But they persist that we have been told a short time ago by mark preston, cnn Political Editor that those who remain on the streets are no longer donald trump protesters, according to Albuquerque Police, theyre saying that these folks throughout are just individuals looking to cause trouble. Dan simon is on the scene, he joins us now live with the very latest. O so dan, you had to move away from the police on horseback, whats the latest there now . Reporter well hey, im not quite sure what the strategy is in terms of what have Albuquerque Police are doing, they just keep pushing the protesters down the street, hoping that eventually, as they move down the crowds will disperse. At this point, that strategy is not working because off number of people out here. You can see some smoke, i dont know if thats tear gas or something that the protesters have lit, but clearly you still have a chaotic situation here in downtown albuquerque, still a number of protesters on the streets again, you eluded to this just a moment ago, its not clear, i guess, if these are antitrump protesters or if these are people who are simply trying to cause trouble. All i know is that the trouble really began after some protesters got through some Police Barricades, police got through some Police Barricades at the Convention Center where donald trump was speaking and they tried to get inside. Police in full riot gear kept them at bay, but right after that, things quickly i did sended into chaos. A number of people throwing both bottles and rocks at Police Officers, and it has been tense ever since. And now here we are at just after 10 30 local time, police still dealing with this situation and trying to get these people to go home. And i dont know what its going to take for this to end, but its still looking pretty ugly down here. Jon and isha. And dan, just recap for us, essentially was there violence on the streets there . Were rocks and bottles thrown . Barricades were torn down, i think a police car was jumped on by some of these demonstrators at some point. Reporter thats exactly right. You had people throwing objects at Police Officers, thankfully i havent seen anybody get hurt, weve seen fighting in the streets between either some of the protesters or protester against a trump supporter. Weve seen some of that go on. And now, as you see police still in full riot gear, theyre just pushing everybody down the street, that seemsing to the strategy and it doesnt seem to be working. The crowds yes are thinner than what they were just a short time ago, but still a lot of people out here, and the concern, of course, is you have a lot of building here in downtown albuquerque, you dont want to see any destruction of property, you dont want to see windows broken or things like thats. Thats what you would see police step in and take a more aggressive stance against this crowd. For now, they have basically shown restraint, trying to get these people to leave. Now you can see them actually firing what appears to be either pepper spray or tear gas into the crowd. You see that . You can see them firing some canisters, coming pretty close to us. Were going to move back a little bit. And you can see go ahead. Reporter the officers there continuing to theyre continuing to advance on this crowd. Oh, oh, we got pepper spray. Yeah, dan, keep a safe distance from that if you can. Stay on the move, but as we look at these pictures and these people still out on the street. Are they trying to directly engage the police or are were seeing one young person, they brought something in their eyes that persons been pepper sprayed. Thats whats happening there right now. Reporter yeah, its pepper spray, i feel it in my throat. You see a woman who took a direct hit to her eyes. Are you okay to keep going, dan . I know you just said youre feeling your throat there. Reporter yeah, i can keep its definitely pepper spray. I can feel it in my throat, im okay. Yep, go ahead. Okay. Very difficult position to be in there with pepper spray out there in the air all around you, but dan, as you look at the police there with with these people still out there protesters if you will. Are the protesters trying to directly engage the police . Are they keeping a distance . I mean, describe what you can see from your vantage point. Reporter well, i would say that the spray was pretty effective. Getting people to move back. I dont see the protesters right in front of the officers that you saw only a short time ago. You see a woman here who took a direct hit to the her eyes. And i would va that was effective in terms of getting people to move back. What happens from here, its really unclear. You have dozens of people on the streets, but they seem to be very upset what police just did in terms of the pepper spray, but quite honestly, im not sure police had another choice. Theyve really done tried to get this crowd to go home for the last several hours, and nobody has left. Yeah. Reporter and things have gotten unruly with the rocks and the bottles. And so, now so dan reporter taken things up a notch. Just looking at the images live right now, 10 30, 7 30 p. M. In albuquerque there right now. I just saw two people there they looked like they had goggles on as well as hanker schifs wrapped around their face. Of a mask essentially. Is there a small group of people here who came prepared for trouble . Who are the ring leaders in all of this . Can you add anything to that . Reporter no question about it. When you come to an event like this or a demonstration or a protest and you have either a gas mask or something to cover your face, you are clearly anticipating some kind of trouble. And weve seen a number of people with those goggles, with those masks, some people right in front of us actually, and so, whether or not these are the instigators, its not clear, but its clear from us that they came, at least a significant number of people i should add. We saw a lot of people throwing the rocks at officers. You know, people came to cause trouble, no question about it. Whether they were part of that original antitrump movement isnt clear, but you know, they came to square off with Police Officers, no question about it. To. Because what is interesting about this right now is that you dont get up to a peaceful rally to express your disagreement on a political point of view, if youre carrying a gas mask, if youve got a hanker chief to put around your face, goggles in case of tear gas or pepper spray and when that woman was pepper sprayed by the place, there were about two or three young men who ran up to her, they flushed her eyes out, so they were obviously ready and prepared because they knew exactly what had happened. The question so you is do we know who these organizers may be . What their point is . You know, and exactly what will it take to get them off the stwreets . Reporter well, i think its fair to call them anarchist, and they wanted to square off with Police Officers. When you come to an event like this with bottles and you light things on fire, youre right, that is not democracy, that is not a peaceful protest. And for most of the day, things were peaceful. We did see a peaceful antitrump protest. It wasnt until you had that initial breakdown of the barricades where you have a number of people to get into the Convention Center and actually get to the event where donald trump is speaking, it was only then when things sort of spun out of control with those bottles and the rocks, lighting flags on fire, lighting donald trump shirts and other gear on fire, and then the police came in. They took a somewhat aggressive stance, but they werent really arresting people. They were trying to clear people out, and as, you know, as things got dark if you will, it was the young people who stayed. Were talking about really only young people out here at the moment. These are the folks who are causing problems. And i would say the crowd now is in the dozens, not the hundreds. And its probably just a matter of time until police really take a more aggressive stance and get everybody out of here. All right. Dan, stand by, were going to take a very quick break and we will come back to these scenes that are playing out on the streets of albuquerque in a moment. The allnew audi a4, with available virtual cockpit. Welcome back, everyone, you are looking at live pictures from albuquerque, new mexico, where it is 10 44 local time there. And there are angry scenes taking place there on the streets. This all began outside of donald trump rally from earlier on. I want to go straight to dan simon whos there at the scene to get the latest. Dan, what are you seeing. What are you hearing . Whats happening around you . Reporter well hey, isha, it looks finally to be breaking up. You can see a number of Police Officers behind me, but im not seeing the group of protesters that we saw a little while ago. Theyre still a few of them back there over there by that church, but they seem to be dispersing, thankfully it has been quite a chaotic scene here in downtown albuquerque this evening with these protesters. They took to the streets in the hundreds. They were facing off with Police Officers they were throwing rocks and bottles at them. They were burning things. They were bouncing on police cars, it was a very tense situation. Police basically pushed the crowd back in full riot gear, they were on horseback just pushing the crowd back to try to get the crowd thinner, and finally, that strategy seems to have paid off because as of right now, just before 11 00 local time, the crowd seems to be gone, but quite a tense situation, police just moments ago, fired tear gas, canisters into the crowd and that seemed really to do the trick to get these crowds to leave. Isha. All right, dan, appreciate it. Do stand by for us, well come back to you for an update. We want to turn to our guest for perspective on all of this. Vice chair for the Democratic Party is with us, talk radio host and trump supporter, john phillips, first to you, i know the answer will be, is there a responsibility on donald trump to turn down the rhetoric, at least in some part to try to avoid im not saying hes responsible for this, but is there a responsible is there an action to take to avoid this . No, weve always had spicy political speech in this country, and protesting has always been an american tradition, but i object to these people being referred to as protesters. Protesters are out there with picket signs, theyre out there with Voter Registration forms, theyre not throwing rocks or assaulting Police Officers, theyre not starting fires, they are criminals and thugs. All right, to you, how do you see this . Pointing the finger blame at the Trump Campaign. Look, from the very beginning, its been designed to divide america, make people angry, to bring out the worst in us, hes done that with the antiimmigrant rhetoric, his continuous use of terminology thats designed to separate and divide us and to make people angry. And at a time when so many in america on both sides of the aisle are frustrated, dont feel like things are working right for them, its much easier than a normally is in a political season to get people agitate lded. You would not condone whats happening . Of course not. Youre not blaming donald trump, the people responsible are the ones lighting the fires. First of all, theres two points, one is whose responsible, people who are acting like idiots are responsible. But, as to whos agitating them, lets not remove the fact that he is contributing business i had continuous use of language that makes people angry and causes this. I would blame the university systems, i would blame the Public Education systems for this because you look at what goes on in college campuses. Any time somebody says something that you disagree with, its hate speech, then shut is down. If you cant shut it down, you behave like this. And its not just political speech, you listen to comedians like jerry seinfeld, chris rock who are afraid to perform at college campuses. This is predictable. Most of the people out there are not College Graduates or even thats true. Lets be honest. Eric and i are agreeing with that. I agree with you on that. It is, it is at a point you have ridiculousness sometimes with the speech protection patterns that are going on on college campuses. Having said that, the people who are out there who are so angry, the people protesting immigrants, the people doing all these things, theyre filled with rage. And theyre fueling the excitement. Let me ask you again, is there anything should, should anything change or on the part of the Trump Campaign on the rhetoric bearing in what mind what hes saying. They were listening to a candidate for Public Office give a speech. They were being peaceful. The violence was going on the thugs and criminals. The police did say these are not the antidonald trump protesters. They all left. The police, the Albuquerque Police, not me, dont roll your eyes at me, these are the people staying behind who just wanted to make trouble. So we need to get that out there. Part of the problem is the police are defamed. How long did they wait before they started shooting the tear gas . We have a political establishment that reflects decides against the cops and these plufrs were assaulted on live television, and they just had to sit back and take it. Theres a silent majority in this country thats watching this violence take place live on cnn right now, with the mexican flags and the rocks being thrown and the cops being assaulted, and theyre appalled. This is bad for the country, but probably good for Donald Trumps prospects. Theres a reaction from the Trump Campaign, ill ask you your thoughts on this, but this is coming from a senior aid to donald trump, tweet, watching thugs and punks in quirk en route to california, they dont even know what they are protesting. They know what theyre protesting. Come on, you can use the diminutive language, you can say its disgusting and garbage, but it does mean something. These people are angry and frustrated, dont like the way he talks. Dont like the way he reflects. When all you do is tear america down and tear the people in america down, this is the net result what have you get. The thing that we need to have as a hopeful campaign, we need to be talking about a positive future. Come back. Were going to talk about it more. Welcome back, everybody, our breaking news, 10 55 in albuquerque, new mexico, right now where police in riot gear and on horseback are trying to disperse the last of an angry mob from the streets of the downtown area. All of this started as a peaceful, antidonald trump protest by hundreds of people, but turned violent as rocks and bottles were thrown bay small number of demonstrators. A door at the Convention Center was smashed, donald trump was inside at the time holding a Campaign Rally for about 4,000 people, but right now, as we can see on the streets there, the police have been trying to clear the last of those demonstrators. Police say they are not at antidonald trump protesters, but rather a small group of people who are out to make trouble. And were getting reaction now from the Trump Campaign. This coming from dan, a Senior Adviser who treat tweeted this, watching thugs and punks in albuquerque en route to california, they dont even know what theyre protesting. We are following breaking news out of albuquerque, new mexico, where crowds and protesters outside a donald trump rally now breaking out. Police say the demonstrators threw rocks and bottles. Officers responded with pepper spray to try to clear the crowd, at least one person was arrested inside the rally. Dan simon live in albuquerque, new mexico where the angry protests have been taking place, dan, it appears its a cat and mouse game between the police and the remaining protesters on the streets. Reporter things are calm now, and you walk around, these are some of the remnants on the street, this is an empty canister of pepper spray we saw police employing that tactic just a short time ago to try to get crowds to calm down, if you will. You had hundreds to begin with, then as the police pushed the protesters down the street in the middle of the main thur ro fair in downtown albuquerque, you had the crowds begin to disperse, but quite a chaotic situation, all evening, this really began when you had a group of protesters break through a barricade that police had set up to prevent protesters from going in the Convention Center where donald trump was giving his speech. They got close to the door, but police in riot gear kept them at bay. And from there, i have to say, things quickly decented into chaos. You had protesters as you said throwing rocks and bottles at police, police were showing remarkable restraint with these protesters basically hoping that things would calm down, but things only escalated. They went to a main thur ro fair a couple of blocks away. Some were bouncing on police cars. They were lighting things on fire. And things were just completely out of control and then police started using pepper spray, started firing tear gas canisters into the crowd, and ultimately, that seemed to do the trick to get these crowds to go home, but quite a scene. This is not what we expected when we first got here this afternoon. We saw well over 1,000 antitrump protesters congregating, this was a peaceful protest with donald trump came into town, and then as you had night fall mainly young people, not clear if they were part of that original protesting. Police say they werent, they were just troublemakers, but clearly caused quite a scene here in albuquerque, john and isha. Yeah, and dan, you were out there for most of this or all of this it, were you able to speak to any of these protesters. What were you able to hear . What did they say to you . Reporter well, they were shouting, you know, negative things about donald trump, some of them were using vulgarity to be quite honest with you, they were holding offensive signs and just trying to get their message across. Keep in mind that new mexico has the highest percentage of latinos in the nation. So in terms of the original antitrump protest, you had a lot of folks who were peacefully protesting Donald Trumps rhetoric when it comes to illegal immigration. Also talking about some of trumps comments about women, again, they were peaceful protesters, and then once you had that initial breakdown of the barricade and they rushed the convention hall, thats when things start of took a drastic turn, and, you know, if they were troublemakers or in they were part of antitrump protest, not really clear, but as the night wore on, clearly they werent part of the original protest team. These were people who were just wanted to cause trouble, again, burning things and throwing things at Police Officers that was not democracy, that was not a peaceful protest, that was ugly, and police really did what they had to do to bring the crowd under control. Dan, do we know at this point if any arrests have been made. One person was arrested inside the Convention Center who was escorted out and arrested. What about outside . Has anyone been taken away . Reporter you know, i was surprised that throughout the evening, i personally did not see a Single Person arrested all night. And police certainly had ample cause to arrest quite a few people. I mean, they saw in plain sight some of these people who were throwing rocks and they could have arrested them, but for whatever reason, they didnt. And so, that was a bit surprising, i have to say. Okay, dan, thank you, please stay with us. Dan simon there on the streets of albuquerque giving us the very latest information as it seems the remnants of this antidonald trump protest starts to die down. Lets bring in Dave Jacobson and john thomas, republican strategist as well. As people around the country, they tune into these images, and its not the fist time weve seen this and its at a donald trump rally. Its not happening on the other side of politics here. What is it about the republican side of politics, this year, john, that is causing so much anger . Is it just Donald Trumps rhetoric . Is it language, what is it . Lets be fair, ferguson had nothing to do with donald trump, and that was violent and disgusting as well. Political rallies here, you dont see this stuff going on at a Hillary Clinton rally or Bernie Sanders rally either. I mean, this has been mostly in chicago, and in kansas, and now in albuquerque. Hes saying thing that are polarizing to some americans. Obviously youre going to see peaceful protests, and thats healthy. Thats what you would expect. When it turns from peace to feel violent, its disgusting, i read the New York Times reported that they were throwing rocks at the police horses. Who does that . Its disgusting. People on the streets of albuquerque. I think its frustrating, this is down right terrifying and this is a preview in the months ahead for the general election, its a direct result of donald trump inciting violence and fear and scare mongering and dividing people with his racist and sexist comments that hes spewing out all across the country. John, to listen to dave clearly regardless of who was behind these protests, they will be tied to donald trump. They started outside a donald trump rally. The question is, will there be louder calls for him to change his rhetoric to do his part to tampa down the anger . Sure, there will be calls from senator sanders supporters and Hillary Clinton supporters db. I mean, among the gop establishment . I dont think so because i think in fact this may serve as a uniting force within the gop to remind people that, look, this is, this is chaotic, americas on the wrong track. You know, we need a new direction in america, and were not getting it from the current administration, and it started with ferguson. You know, this is not, this is not alone. So no, i dont think youre going to so much see it from the republican side, i think it does hand a opportunity to secretary clinton, secretary of state clinton, shes going to go on a uniting theme. Thats what were going to hear. We made the point last hour, donald trump is not responsible for the people outside throwing rocks and bottles and setting fires and all of this kind of stuff, dave, i guess, wondering as someone whos running for the highest office in the land, someone whos saying, i want to be the leader of this country, i want to be the leader of the free world, doesnt that come with certain responsibilities whether you like it or not, whether, you know, youre rhetoric works for you in a primary campaign or whatever, theres a certain level of responsibility that comes with that campaign that you have to take, you have to take involvement . The end result in january of 2017 is, you know, when you are sworn in as president of the United States, you dont just represent republicans and or independent or democratic voters with, you represent all americans. And thats ultimately what the next president s going to have to do. And i think thats going to be the struggle for donald trump moving forward. How is he going to make the case to, you know, mainstream americans . To unite the country, bring them together and move the country forward. Theres a really issue for trump here. That will has boosted his appeal, how do you tampa that down when you benefitted from it . Theres a calculation here. Sure is, and hes going to have to shift on some things. We saw on the wall, i dont think hes going to walk away from that, but he may soften his rhetorics in terms of banning muslims. But im remembering back to look, republicans protest too, tea party protests and others who were peaceful about it. And so, the fact is, the violence has to end. And i think both candidates are going to have to come together and call for an immediate end because we dont to want see this escalate, no party does. Right. As we move towards the convention, theres obviously going to be a key moment here. But, the politics through all of this, if youre an independent voter, if youre sort of on the fence, if youre on the fence, independent voter and you see this, which way do you go . Like i cant believe theyre trying to shut down donald trump he has a right to stay . Where does this lie . I think its the latter. Donald trump is causing this, i think it speaks to his temperament and his judgment and the fact again, i keep saying this, that hes spewing out the hateful rhetoric thats really dividing the country. And Hillary Clintons now got this new message, the brand that shes trying to create for the general election that says hey, we are stronger together, shes bringing in moderate republicans, independents, and of course all the democrats, both her democratic supporters and Bernie Sanders together to unite behind her. As a democrat, do you make a campaign or just let this go and let it speak for itself . If youre the Clinton Campaign, speak for itself. You dont to want capitalize on this. I think its a clever slogan, of of 66 of americans it said that americas on the wrong track, and Hillary Clinton represents the establishment. You cant have your cake and eat it too. Trumps unfavorables are high as well. And this doesnt help, regardless of whether its his fault or not. It doesnt help him. Certainly, this happens night after night, its not good for donald trump. Is it a onenight thing or happen night after night . I think americans are disgusted at what happened tonight. And i hope we dont see more of it. I think also john, youre right on a certain level, this is where someone like paul ryan could say hey, donald trump, you want my endorsement, lets sort of calm the nerves, lets talk about issues, lets talk about policies, the economy, and now how we move the country forward. If donald trump listens to someone like paul ryan who is cool, calm, collected when it comes to the issues in the president ial campaign, thats going to bode well. Whats the chance of that . I dont think donald trump listens to many people, so im not holding my breath, good idea though. There is that report out there by nbc that ryan is ready to endorse trump, but when you watch the images from tonight if youre the speaker of the house, influential republicans, i have to hold that back for a bit. You may not want to do it in tomorrows news cycle, hes going to endorse the republican prumptive nominee and again, its not Donald Trumps fault that people got violent tonight. Sure. And there are protesters outside of obamas events, there are protesters outside of sanders events and clintons events, the difference is they havent turned too violent, senator sanders did say that the convention would be messy. We havent seen tear gas were not at the convention yet. So guys, stand by for us, thank you. Dan simon is back with us for an update of whats been happening on the streets of albuquerque, dan, we spoke a few moments ago, it did seem as if the police are finding getting an hand, whats the latest . Reporter thats right. From what i understand, you still have a few people, basically on the outskirts of downtown, but certainly dont have a situation what you had earlier. You have a few Police Officers basically standing outside of the Convention Center making sure things dont descend into chaos once again. I would say for the most part, people have left the area, but boy, it was quite a situation earlier. It was scary for me and our crew out here. We inhaled some of this pepper spray that was fired by police into the crowd. You know, we got tear gas in our eyes. At one point, we were almost trounsed by an officer on horseback. So, you know, police did what they had to do to try to get these crowds to disperse, you saw a number of these protesters earlier throwing rocks and bottles at police trying to start a fight with them. I had to say, ive been to a lot of these protests over the years, and if youre in albuquerque, Police Showed remarkable constraint in comparison to other places. Police had ample opportunity to arrest a number of individuals they saw creating problems, and they decided not to for whatever reason. But the bottom line is, at this hour, things have calmed down, for the most part, throughout the afternoon, it was a peaceful protest. You had well more than 1,000 antidonald trump protesters here outside the Convention Center and then, when you have a small group try to go inside, thats when things quickly spn spun out of control and things got really tense. John and isha. Dan, at this stage, do we know, were the police expecting protests or were they caught off guard . Reporter they were certainly expecting a protest, i mean, afterall, they were here in riot gear, whether or not they expected this type of protest would they see it escalate to this level, i dont know. Thatll be a good question to ask them. We did see on social media over the past several days that a number of antidonald trump people were going to congregate here. So that had been in the works ever since donald trump announced he was actually coming to albuquerque. But we talked about it earlier, you know, when you see people, you know, wearing gas masks, and other things around their faces, clearly theyre here to cause trouble, no question about it. And thats what police had to deal with. And dan, very quickly, what was the time line between the moment the violence erupted until now. What period are we looking at here . Reporter i would say maybe two or three hours. Itting to to get this crowd under control. So, it was a good chunk of time, i have to say. Right before donald trump started speaking, i think is when, when things really disented into chaos and two hours after he was finished, which is about right now, thats when things drastically calmed down, but its been quite a night, you know. I have to say, we werent expecting this when bearrived earlier, no question about it. Clearly. Okay. Hey dan, thanks so much. Very much appreciate it. Live reporting from the scene in a very chaotic and at times violent situation there in downtown albuquerque. Appreciate it, dan. Thank you. Short break here, when we come back, his supporters when many chanting build that wall. Many protesters were removed by security officers. Why are you checking your credit score . Welcome back, everybody, breaking news out of albuquerque, new mexico, where police say a small crowd of troublemakers is outside a donald trump rally which ended a couple of hours ago. Police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd after some threw rocks and bottles, as well as setting small fires. Supporters were chanting build that wall. Protesters were removed by security officers. We have a chance to be something so special as a country, and really, we want to take care of everyone, we want to take care of those protesters that get ripped out of here, we want to take care of them. And gently taken out, but we want to take care of everybody. We want to be encollusive, we want to inclus everybody, folks, we have to. Were a group thats very well unified. While all this is going on, Republican Voters in washington were casting their ballots. Trump the winner there with 76 of the vote so far. He now as 1,229 delegates, just eight shy of what he needs to clench the nomination. Hoping to appeal to voters before the states primary in two weeks. Bernie sanders wrapped up a rally in San Bernardino a couple hours ago, his third event the day. Front runner Hillary Clinton kicked off her swing through the western u. S. With three stops along los angeles. We have the latest from riverside. Reporter Hillary Clinton still competing but making sure shes going after one man and one man alone, that is donald trump. On tuesday evening here in riverside, california, secretary clinton making clear from the very beginning donald trump was in her sights from immigration, climate change, housing policy, she went after donald trump throughout her entire speech. She said its important to take donald trump seriously and usual voters to do so. Youve got to sort of pinch yourself when you hear some of what donald trump is saying. And it is something that we got take seriously, my friends, it may have started out as entertainment, but now its really, really concerning. And i dont want what he says to go unanswered. And i will continue to stand up and speak out against what he says, the kind of positions and policies that hes putting forward, the way he treats people, how divisive he is. Reporter now its clear Hillary Clinton is trying to get Bernie Sanders supporters to join her campaign. She needs a stroj finish here in the california primary and other states that are voting on june 7, from new jersey, montana, new mexico, the dakotas. Its clear that Hillary Clinton fighting hard here in california, so far looking ahead to donald trump, she believes the time is now to identify him, to define him, to be show voters that he should be taken seriously, should be going hard after him im told for the rest of this week and into next week. Shes clearly fighting a twofront war with Bernie Sanders, but her aim is entirely on donald trump. Our thanks to you, joining us now, Dave Jacobson, john thomas, theyve been with us most of the night. Its great having you on a nagt like this. The Clinton Campaign now, theyre rolling out a new line of attack against donald trump. First with a new campaign ad, pretty much using Donald Trumps own words about the housing collapse. I sort of hope that happens because then people like me would go in and buy. If there is a bubble burst as they call it, you know, you could make a lot of money. Then later in a Campaign Stop, Hillary Clinton essentially said trump is dangerous for the American Economy. And he has experience in bankruptcy. Right . So, you know, i dont know if thats one of the qualifications for running for president , but i kind of doubt it. Hes bankrupted companies, i said yesterday, i dont know how you lose money running casinos. Sfwlr this really seems to be a concerted effort to go up to donald trump on the economy, after a night like tonight, do you stick with that or go with the earlier byte about how devicive donald trump is . I think you battle him on both fronts. In terms of the economy message, i think shes embracing the 2012 playbook, president obamas campaign took against mitt romney, and i think Clintons Campaign is trying to make donald trump the mitt romney of 2016 to go in and define him early as the greedy multibillionaire, big business guy who made his all of his money on the backs of poor, working families and go in and say look, this guy talks a big game about creating jobs, but the reality is hes exploited workers, hes taking advantage of the free trade policies that he comes out against and has shipped jobs overseas to china and mexico for his own trump clothing brands. Thats not going to work. Its not going to work, first of all she has to atake him on the one issue where he dominates, and it is all about the economy, thats what this election is going to come down to. Tonight isser it shl, its terrible to see the violence, but at the end of the day, people are going to think about pocketbook issues. And she took that out of context, i know thousand make money and thats why people like him. He brought capitalism. You talk about the fading, i want to just bring to our viewers attention, a tweet that donald trump just put out, this tweet coming after the scenes weve just been talking about for the last couple of hours, this is what he said, great rally in new mexico, amazing crowd. Now in l. A. , big rally in anaheim. No mention of the protests. Great rally. Well, inside, im sure it was. But he has to shift the topic. He doesnt want this to be the story, the violent protest, he wants to shift about how hes uniting the party and coalescing the party, i would Say Something about Hillary Clintons comment about i dont know how you go bankrupt or lose money in a casino, well, she doesnt know how you make a job either. And thats her problem. Donald trumps good at contrasting that as we move forward and she cant call her husband and have ask how to create jobs, she has to understand it, and she doesnt. Do you let the Trump Campaign push what happened tonight off the screen and then, you know, carry on with business as usual talking about big rallies in anaheim . I think her new message of sort of stronger together, uniting together, i think that implies that trump is the opposite of that. Hes the divider and chief, splintering the american electorate and simultaneously, going back to the jobs front, i think yeah, you know, itll be political malpractice for hillary not to capitalize on the record when it comes to the company economy. He created 20 million jobs, we saw the largest expansion in the American Economy in modern time witness moreover, he balanced with a surplus at the end when he was president. Shes not going to run from that legacy. Lets go to california, Bernie Sanders, peaceful. Big israel in california. He also a number of rallies, hes also releasing a very slick new campaign ad, look at this. What choice do californianss have in this election . The biggest one of all. You have the power to choose a new direction for the Democratic Party, to break the back of a corrupt system of Campaign Finance that keeps a ripped economy in place, to stand up to wall street and make the wealthy fair share. Public free colleges and universities, california, theres a long way to washington, but you can send them a message they cant ignore. Im Bernie Sanders, and i approve this message. Positive message not attacking clinton. And look, the whole point is send a message, california. Send a symbolic message that, you know, ive still got enough steam to keep going and if theres a reason to sort of continue moving forward and devote, the reality is, every single report has come out and shown that mathematically, its impossible for him to lock up the figure. He didnt need to mention Hillary Clinton, hes the 800 pound gorilla in the room. New direction, running against the establishment, Hillary Clinton is the establishment, he didnt need to go negative, and largely, his brand is uplifting and positive. I think theres joy there. By the way, hes only down nine in most tracking polls. There was a poll that koim out today, showing him 17 all right. Put a lid on it. All right. Time for a quick break. Were keeping an eye on the situation in albuquerque, new mexico. Where police in riot gear are trying to clear the last protesters after a donald trump rally. Back in a moment. This is cnn breaking news. Welcome back, everybody, just got 11 32 in albuquerque, nam, youre watching cnn newsroom live from los angeles. Our top story this hour in albuquerque, new mexico, police say a small group of troublemakers are still in the streets outside a donald trump rally earlier some protesters broke some barricades, set fire to trumps merchandise, and threw rocks and bottles at police. Officers broke up the crowd by using pepper spray. Meantime, donald trump moving closer to officially clenching the nomination with an easy win in the washington primary. No one else is running. So far, hes got 76 of the vote, former candidates john kasich and ted cruz trailing far behind and just left on the ballot. And front runner Hillary Clinton is here in Southern California campaigning on tuesday, she held rally at riverside, its one of the stops shes making in the golden state. Bernie sanders also fighting to win here in california, he spoke to supporters at a rally in San Bernardino. Sanders refuses to backdown before the Democratic Convention in july, even though he trails in the delegate count. Lets get to the Democratic Party vice chair for california and trump supporter, john phillips. A wild night in albuquerque, john, whats your take on this . What does new do for the Trump Campaign . Does he come under pressure regardless of whos to blame here or who you blame here, does he come under pressure to dial it back . Thing helps him. The silent majority is watching these criminals on cnn tonight assault Police Officers, attack public property, go after police cars, and theyre appalled at whats going on. They see the mexican flag out there. Weve lived through this here in california in 1994 when proposition 187 was on the ballot, when governor pete wilson was running for reelection. We saw similar protests. And there was a backfire, a boom rang affect that happened and proposition 187 passed and pete wilson ended up coming down, he was down double digits in the polls and won a second term decisively. And since that day, no republican has ever won an office in california, every latino voter virtually, to the one in california votes for the democrats. And i think what you have seen, as is evidence by Voter Registration in california, that donald trump has fired up latinos all across america. The largest number of latinos are all registering at democrats. This is state after state after state because of the kind of demagoguic language that hes used. John, just quake ickly, i wao read Donald Trumps tweet. Great rally in new mexico. Amazing crowd. Now in l. A. , big rally in anaheim. Is that good enough as a response to all of this just to put that out and not to directly address the scene on the streets . Absolutely. Hes not responsible for the violence thats going on outside the building. The people committing those acts of violence are responsible for it. And i have to say this, eric is a guy, if he was there in albuquerque, he would be out there with a the Voter Registration forms, he wouldnt be burning things down, he wouldnt be attacking Police Officers with if you dont like what donald trump way is saying, theres a right way and wrong way of responding to it, and what youre seeing tonight is the wrong way. The police did stay out of the scenes, those yes, but i dont know why they want to the bend over backwards to make excuses for these poem when the violence didnt start a few minutes ago, the violence has been going on throughout the evening. So there were fires, there were rocks being thrown, there were laws being broken, long ago. John was right, theres a right and wrong way to respond, and if you find what you saw distasteful and if you find what he says wrong, you vote for the democrat for president. And thats the best response. Thats the salesman. Okay, lets get to some of the Campaign Politics right now because, you know, donald trump, hes going way back to the 90s hes bringing ul of a these campaigns. Lets get in our hot tub time machine and go back to, 2007 and dwaigt when donald j. Trump had this to say about Hillary Clinton and about also bill clinton. I know her very well. Shes very talented and she has a husband that i also like very much. I think shes going to get the nomination rather easily. Look at the trouble bill clinton got into with something that was totally unimportant. And they tried to impeach him which was nonsense. Okay. John, thats quite some evolution, and dont give me the line, its all about business, he had to stay friendly with the politicians. Times change, people change their minds, back in 2008, Hillary Clinton and barack obama hated each other, now theyre buddies. Politics has a strange way of turning yesterdays enemy into todays friend. Bill clinton, bill Clinton Left Office with the highest Approval Ratings of any president in the last century other than perhaps ronald reagan, and continues to be amongst americas most popular political figures. I think to try to resurrect the stale, ridiculous stories from 1996 and 1997 is preposterous. Top try to use to win an election today. And by the way, part of Hillary Clintons strength in this, is that for 25 years, shes been attacked from every side about every issue from how she wears her hair to how she wears her shoes. And she keeps moving forward. The past 25 years, the concern is hes revitalizing these issues, put young voters who werent aware of it, and it would gain traction with them. What do you say . I dont see any of the young voters voting in the republican party. I see them signing up for the Democratic Party. Bill clinton, apart from the sections on breitbart or rush limbaugh. What is there to gain by trying to crack the guy . Hes popular personally, but look at what Hillary Clintons doing with his policies. Shes running almost as much against bill clinton as she is against donald trump. Shes running against the crime bill, shes running against welfare reform, shes running against free trade. Well, those are huge achievements. But shes not running to be the third term of bill clinton. Shes running to be the first term of Hillary Clinton. And you know what, she is a brilliant woman whose had her own successful career, who has served in the United States senate and as a secretary of state and was led on childrens issues, she needs to be be her own person. She doesnt need to defend her husbands term. Hillary, im going to just throw this in, hill have i not going back to the 1990s, in fact, shes going after trump on the business record, not releasing his tax returns, lets run that sound so we can get your reaction to that. It may be that he hasnt paid ever any federal income tax. Thats why we to want see his tax returns. Everybody else had to turn over their tax returns. Whop has been the nominee of a Party Running for president. So were going to keep asking. Is this an issue voters care about . No, voters care about their tax return, not the president ial candidate tax return. I think its relevant when youre talking about someone whose been in government for years and years and years and theyre a multimillionaire many times over. And its relevant to peek into their taxes and find out whats going on. Hes been in the private sector his whole life. Heres somebody whos supposed to help our economy who has repeatedly bankrupted his own businesses who claims to be worth billions, who claims to give all this money, even his contributions to the veterans didnt get made until this week when he got questioned by a reporter about it. So you know what, i think voters do care about his finances, they do want to know what he is doing and what hes really all about. You got the last word last time, let me this time, call it will quits, its even. Thank you. All right. See, and a handshake. Tylenol to go to break. They used pepper spray to clear out the demonstrators a short time ago. The demonstrators settled on tuesday with some breaking down barricades and throwing rocks and bottles at police. Albuquerque police just tweeted a number of officers are being tweeted for injuries after being hit by rock. Now bill cosby is going on trial for Sexual Assault. As the comedian sat inside a krorm tuesday, a judge ruled that there is enough evidence against him to move ahead with a criminal trial. He faces three counts of decent assault in a case from 2004. Since then, dozens of women have accused him of Sexual Misconduct. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison. Lets bring in a pop culture contributor to access Hollywood Live and a civil rights attorney. Welcome. I want to talk about the legalities first with you, legally, on what basis did the judge make this decision that there was enough evidence . Well, its important to note that this was a preliminary hearing today, it wasnt a trial. So the standard that the judge used is much lower than the standard would be when the trial actually starts. The standard today was preponderance of the evidence, all they had to do was present enough evidence that it was more likely than not than he committed a crime. And what we saw today was the affidavit of praubl cause that was involved in the investigation. The woman that is making the charges didnt actually testify today. People were waiting outside, hoping that she maybe would take the stand, that didnt happen and its not required in a preliminary hear pg. Very low standard for the prosecution. So trial will go ahead, from what we saw today, what about the defense strategy. We learned a lot about the defense strategy, what we learned is that the defense is going to present a case that says this woman has given very inconsistent statements and testimony and that shes not credible. So you saw the defense attorney, even though she wasnt attacking her credibility, talking about the fact that after the incident, she went to dinner with cosby. She bought him a gift. She and her family went to a concert with him in canada, she called him on multiple occasi s occasions, so were starting to see these facts drop by the Defense Attorneys, not so much for what was going on in the courtroom today, but for the court of Public Opinion and to start shaping the narrative around this woman whose making the allegations. This is one of the very important parts and interesting aspect of the story, the details were about to hear a lot more. Do you think people are numb to it by now or is this nation ready to be shocked even further . I think that the nation is waiting to see what happens. Especially in hollywood. Hollywood existed with a culture of you have to give some to get some. And a lot of these women are the stories almost ring the same, i was an actress, he promptsed me this and i was drugged and cornet move. It kind of operated that way. Power, this is a power struggle, heres a powerful rich man who was basically using that and drugging these women. Lets first put on the table that i for one believe hes guilty of rape. I said that. I stand by that. If 50 women have come forward, if 49 of them are lying, if only one is telling the truth, youre still a rapist. And in this trial, what she mentioned is the defense is doing a little bit more than that, what theyre doing with the Public Opinion by saying that he, the woman went to dinner with him and that was still friendly, thats like a woman abused and she still comes back to her abuser. Develop we say that punches werent thrown . Can we actually, as human beings, look at these cases and say that something, something wrong didnt happen here because and correct me if im wrong, i believe that in his initial deposition, he admitted to buying them for the purpose of drugging women for sex. This should be a slam dunk. Despite all of that, cosby and the defense team denied did everything. Theyre not guilty. Let me clarify that, in the deposition that youre making reference to, he did not admit to giving concept kwa lutes. Theres a big difference between i brought and what happens in this particular case. As we talk about that wow, splitting hairs there. Its the law. But that is spirit of the law, and thats really fine, i bought them to give to women for sex, but i didnt do it. Theres a real issue about whether that deposition testimony so going to be admissible, and you can expect to see World War Three breakout between the Defense Attorneys and the prosecution over whether that deposition testimony will even come into evidence. You talked about the court of Public Opinion and hollywood and the way business is done around here, do you see those famous public supporters of bill cosby making statements now that the its gone to trial or see everyone stepping back now . I think theyre pulling back as fast as they can. His shows have been pulled, tv land. He was in deals with netflix and Different Streaming Services for airing of his shows, theyve all withdrawn back. You dont hear his friends or supporters. He made millions of dollars for a lot of people. And i think what others, the other fact that i want people to understand is a conspiracy of this kind, these many women, were talking about a. 8yearold man whose been famous for more than five decades for 50 years bill cosbys in the public eye, you cant hide this stuff without help. If this is one of the things, i think power for people are hoping that their names are not even brought up into this. It could just be, as i said, its the tip of the iceberg or the titanic. Lets hear from gloria al red, she was talking today, listen to this. If she was unable because she was unconscious or in and out of consciousness to say anything, then she couldnt say no, and that cannot lead to the conclusion that she therefore consented. Thats the argument. Thats going to be their argument, but again were going to see a really aggressive attack on concept by these Defense Attorneys. And i know its hard for lay people to understand how in a case where you have 50 other women making similar allegations that cosby could get away with this. The reality is those allegations may also be deemed ined a miss public. We dont know that yet. We may not hear from any of those women. Thats going to be another big battle. Even though the judge talked about a trial Going Forward in july. I think this trial is probably months off and maybe even a year off because the motion practice, the fight over this evidence is going to be so hard fought, going to be up on a pill at the state Appellate Court level. Do you believe herself guilty . Youre the lawyer, do you believe hes guilty . I am appalled by the admissions in the deposition that we learned more today, even allegations, admissions by mr. Cosby that he had sex with teens. And this is why we go to trial to find out definitively once and for all, sit back in the cheap seats and pass the judgments. At this point, therell be a trial and we will find out. And the trial standard beyond reasonable doubt but not ynd any doubt. Thank you. You guys are great. Thank you. [ baseball bat cracks ] announcer this is cnn breaking news. Hello and welcome to our viewers in the United States and around the world. Im isha sesay. Great to have you with us. Im john vause. It has just gone midnight in albuquerque, new mexico, where police have finally managed to break up a violent protest outside a donald trump rally. Angry demonstrators jumped on cars, threw rocks and bottles at police and set several small fires. Police in riot gear and on horseback responded with pepper spray. Are you okay . Dont wipe it. Dont wipe it. We need water police say they arrested at least one person inside the rally and a number of officers were injured. Authorities say a small crowd of troublemakers stayed out on the streets after the antitrump protesters had left. A trump adviser called the demonstrators thugs and punks who dont even know what theyre protesting. Cnns dan simon was right in the middle of the mayhem and filed this report. Reporter it has been a chaotic situation in downtown albuquerque as antitrump protesters have taken to the streets. You can see Police Officers there in full riot gear. Some officers are horse back. Theyve been pushing this crowd down the street, trying to get these folks to go home. This all started a few hours earlier when you had some protesters break through some Police Barricades to try to get into the Convention Center where donald trump was giving his speech. Officers kept those people at bay, but from there things really descended into chaos. You had a number of people throwing both rocks and bottles at officers as police tried to bring the situation under control. The crowds a lot smaller at the moment, but still a number of people out here as police deal with this situation here in downtown albuquerque and try to get this crowd to go home. Dan simon, cnn, albuquerque, new mexico. And donald trump now very close to clinching the republican nomination after winning the washington primary. He has about 76 of the vote. Ted cruz and john kasich were still on the ballot even though theyve dropped out of the race. Cnn estimates trump now has 1229 delegates, just eight shy of the number he needs to win the nomination. For the democrats, all eyes on california and its primary just two weeks away. The candidates are campaigning hard. Frontrunner Hillary Clinton made three stops around los angeles tuesday. At a rally in riverside, she called Donald Trumps campaigning concerning. You got to sort of pinch yourself when you hear some of what donald trump is saying. And it is something that weve got to take seriously, my friends. It may have started out as entertainment, but now its really, really concerning. We may have talked in the past about how we have a bully pulpit in the white house, but that doesnt mean we want a bully in the white house. Bernie sanders is confident about his chances here in california, saying he has no doubt he will win the states primary. We will win because we have the energy. We have the enthusiasm. And because people know that given the crises we face, it is too late for establishment politics or establishment economics. Joining us now, democratic strategist dave jacob son and republican consultant dave thomas. Given the violence weve seen in albuquerque in the last couple of hours, does Hillary Clinton double down on that message that this guy is dangerous, hes divisive, were facing a real problem. There are a lot of concerns. Look what happened in albuquerque . Absolutely. I think shes got to try to come off as the uniter in chief. Shes got to say, look, moderate republicans, independent voters and of course democrats, both Bernie Sanders supporters and my supporters, we need a uniter in chief who is going to bring the country together, break through the gridlock in washington to solve our problems and get things done, create jobs improve schools and make sure we have clean air and clean water. She really needs to capitalize on this issue because donald trump is running a divider in chief campaign. He spews out these racist and sexist remarks and has really splintered the country. I think she needs do capitalize on that as we pivot tot general election. John, what does trump do now . He has capitalized on being a divider. It has rallied his base. It has excited them. Does he tamp it down . Theres a political calculation to make here. Weve already seen him moderate his tone saying were not going to ban all muslims. Weez walking back some of his rhetoric. Its a delicate line to walk if youre donald trump because donald trump is trying to tap into the 66 of americans that authentic were on the wrong track. That is an anger and a frustration about the country. So you dont want to go too squishy, too all uniting because youll lose track of the very voters that you need to get across the finish line. The clinton campain is rolling out a new line of attack against donald trump. They did this, i guess, hours before, you know, the events in albuquerque. But essentially its a new campaign ad using Donald Trumps words about the housing collapse. Sort of hope that happens because then people like me would go in and buy. If there a bubble burst as they call it, you know, you could make a lot of money. And, john, to you, this is actually really bizarre to me because the thing that people love about donald trump is the fact hes a businessman. He capitalizes on a situation and he makes money. He didnt cause the housing collapse. He just made money off it. Another campaign ad taken out of context. Thats what were seeing here. But, look, hillary has to attack donald trump on the area hes strongest, which is the economy. And at the end of the day, voters, were going to get through tonight and the protests tonight but voters at the end of the day are going to vote with their pocket book issues. And they have to assault him. Its a hard case to make because donald trump is a businessman and she isnt. All right. Lets read Donald Trumps response to the clinton attack and then, dave, i want you to weigh in and give your thoughts. He said, frankly this is the kind of thinking our country needs, understanding how to get a good result out of a very bad and sad situation. Politicians have no idea how to do this. They dont have a clue. The trump response as they try and hit him on the economy, which is his strong point. Look, i think the Clinton Campaign is doubling down on the 2012 play book that president obama embraced where they sort of went in and defined mitt romney early as a greedy businessman. And i think the Clinton Campaign is sort of trying to make donald trump the mitt romney of 2016 where they say, hey, listen, this is a guy who talks a big game in terms of the economy and creating jobs but look at his business track record. He exploited the free trade bills in the country, shipped manufacturing jobs to meblxico,o china. He took advantage of poor people and foreclosed on them during the housing crises so he could flip those houses and make money off their backs. Thats a cute story. But that is not the case. By and large hes a real estate developer. Hes built things in new york and hes created jobs. Last week we had women. The week before that we had foreign policy. This week weve got the economy. It looks like theyre throwing everything at the wall and they dont have an attack line on him yet. Theyre attacking him, and his numbers are going up. Which is why they keep trying a different strategy each week. Lets move on because trump also digging into the past here. Hes raising some very old conspiracy theories about the clintons, in particular, vince foster who committed suicide. The conspiracy out there was he was murdered. He was the white House Counsel and a friend of the clintons. Trump said this to the washington post. Its one thing with her, whether its white water or whether its vince or whether its benghazi, its always a mess with hillary. This is just sort of the latest that were getting from donald trump in these conspiracy theories. If you go back, there was the birtherism, that president obama was not born in the u. S. Then there was muslims cheered in the streets of the United States on september 11. Justice scalia was found dead with a pillow on his face. And the mac daddy of them altogether, ted cruzs dad may have been linked to the kennedy assassination. This is what he said. And i just asked about stories that were appearing all over the place, not just in the national enquirer, about the fact that a picture was taken of him and Lee Harvey Oswald and they didnt deny that picture. What do i know . Im just asking. I dont know anything. I wouldnt say that myself. But other people might have, yeah. What do you think about this as a strategy . I mean i wouldnt recommend it if i were vaedsing donald trump, but i dont think hes listening to me or any strategist at this point. What hes trying to do is drive news cycles and remind voters of a larger theme that Hillary Clinton has had controversy surrounding her entire career, and that is smart. But beat her up on substantial things. I think it is fair to attack hillary on her record on women. Thats fair. But some of these wing nut theories are not a good thing to push off on. I think the sort of roll your eye politics, you know, salacious attacks are over the top when it comes to having a dialogue and the serious contest that is who is going to be the next president of the United States . And i think it really undermines the conversation that we have as a nation in terms of choosing our next commanderinchief. I mean this tactic of going negative, isnt it one of diminishing returns . At some point you start to turn people off and it just becomes ludicrous. I mean the further you go with this kind of muck raking. Yeah, its a race to the bottom. It will be a question of who is the most unlikeable of them all at the end of the day. Look, negative campaigning works. Thats why you have to do it. Not when you start in may. Thats my issue. Thats what its going to take. Look, Hillary Clinton has to turn Donald Trumps soft negatives into hard negatives, and donald trump has to turn Hillary Clintons hard negatives and keep them high as possible. One thing, though is when it comes to a negative campaign, it wont do a whole lot for your numbers, but it will certainly erode your opponents numbers and that seems to be going on here if you look at the polls. The goal, the objective, any strategist looking at these races says, look, we go negative because it works at the end of the day, you want to drive up the negatives of your opponent much higher than yours. I think thats the strategy that both campaigns are going to be embracing as we pivot to the general election. The fbi is looking into Campaign Donations which were made to terry mcauliffe. He is the governor of virginia, and a long time friend of the clintons. Governor mcauliffe said basically no big deal. No one has alleged any wrongdoing on my part. I will continue to be full out in force. You know, investigations happen. No ones alleged any wrongdoing on my part. Could this have implications for the clintons . Again theyre close to somebody who is being implicated in a scandal . Theres nothing tangible that has sort of come forward. Msnbc the other day released a poll with the governors approval rating. Talking about i think 58 approval rating. So hes in a very good position with the swing state of virginia right now. So until we see something thats really concrete that comes out of this investigation, i think theyre going to attach themselves to him moving forward. Do you agree . Well, its one of those things where even if you actually didnt do it, where theres smoke, theres fire, or it reinforces their perception that like donald trump says, crooked hillary is at it again. With that a long night. Thank you so, so much. Were going to take a quick break. More politics is ahead. Next, though, a dramatic turn for bill cosby. Hes been ordered to stand trial. Stay with us. Police in albuquerque, new mexico, have broken up a violent crowd of protesters outside a donald trump rally. Officers fired smoke and pepper spray after a number of people threw rocks and bottles and broke through a police barricade. At least one person was arrested and several Police Officers were hurt. Inside the arena, trump rallied the supporters with many chanting build that wall. Several antitrump protesters were removed by security. We have a chance to be something so special as a country, and really we want to take care of everyone. We want to take care of those protesters that got ripped out of here. I mean we want to take care of them and very gently taken out. But we want to take care of everybody. We want to be inclusive. We want to include everybody, folks. We have to. Were a group thats very well unified. Meanwhile, trump is now very close to clinching the republican nomination after winning the washington primary. He has about 76 of the vote. Ted cruz and john kasich were still on the ballot even though theyve dropped out of the race. Cnn estimates trump has 1229 delegates, just eight shy of that 1,237 number to win the nomination before the convention. Away from politics for a moment. Bill cosby will stand trial for felony Assault Charges in pennsylvania. The 78yearold comedian is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee. Shes one of more than 50 women who allege Sexual Misconduct by cosby. Cnns jean casares has more. We can now definitely say that the criminal case against bill cosby is proceeding to trial. The preliminary hearing, a very important larrying determined by the magistrate judge that the prosecution had probable cause that bill cosby sexually assaulted Andrea Constand in 2004 when inviting her to his home, he gave her blue pills, had her drink wine, and then sexually assaulted her. The defense very aggressive in the hearing. You can see that they are going to say that any Sexual Activity was consensual, that they had a romantic relationship, and that alcohol was not used that night. If she wanted to say no, she could have. Bill cosby is waiving his next formal arraignment, but both sides will now begin to exchange discovery, and this case will proceed to trial right here in pennsylvania. Back to you. Thank you for that. Civil rights attorney areva martin is with us. And a contributor to access Hollywood Live. Riva, just walk us through the legal procedure. What comes next . Actually the trial. The judge today set a july trial date. But as we heard jean say, theres going to be this exchange of information between the prosecution and the defense, and we should expect a lot of motions by both sides. The prosecution wants to get the testimony in of some of the other women who have come forth and made similar allegations against bill cosby, and the defense team wants to keep that testimony out as well as they want to concentrate on that deposition testimony. That deposition testimony from 2005 involving the civil case with constand is critical to the prosecutions case, and the defense lawyers are arguing that it should be inadmissible in the trial. Lets listen to one of the Defense Attorneys for bill cosby speaking outside of court today. We gleaned a lot about how this is going to unfold. Lets take a listen. It was presented that after and i stress after this socalled incident, the complainant continued to contact mr. Cosby. The complainant accepted a dinner invitation from mr. Koz bow. The complainant returned to mr. Cosbys home. And ultimately after returning to canada, the complainant asked for tickets to a concert that he was performing at, went to the concert, and presented him with a gift. So, areva, this is about tearing down constands credibility. Absolutely. And building the case of a romantic relationship. Weve heard the attorney say that consensual sexual encounter happened on that particular night, that she had an opportunity constand had an opportunity to say no, and she didnt. And so if you can show that there were phone calls, that from were subsequent dates, if there was subsequent contact between cosby and constand, then the argument about a romantic relationship, you know, starts to make more sense and starts to have more credibility. We should say bill cosby pleading not guilty to all of this and the trial will be under way. But given everything that weve learned about bill cosby and all the details, regardless of the outcome of this trial, can bill cosby fall any further from grace at this point . Oh, he could fall into prison. But i mean in the eyes of most people. Honestly, its a very tough question because if they find him not guilty, there are going to be people that jump up and say vindication, we told you all along. I mean you can go to any grocery store, barbershop, anyplace where people are. People will say i dont think he did it. Some people will say i think hes despicable. Personally im in the despicable camp. The fall from grace, it hurts a lot of people because the tv character of bill cosby, dr. Huxtable, thats what we put our faith in. Thats what we thought the man was. But this tactic by the defense, it feels almost hollywood in nature. They are shaming and using the media to they call her the complainant, they dont use her name. They do as much as possible to say that, oh, there were gifts. It was consensual. If you are drugged and someone takes your power to say no, i dont care if she walked in that room with every expectation of having sex with bill cosby. If he took her ability to say no away, then, yeah, hes a rapist. And i dont think it should be this difficult for people to understand or the court of Public Opinion. As i said, what theyre doing is a smear campaign. I mean this is hollywood at its finest. This is pretty typical defense tactics. Its absolutely typical. Whenever someone is charged with rape, we often there was consensual relationship between the parties. I have to disagree. Of course there are a lot of people who believe bill cosby is guilty and they believe it because of the 40plus, almost 50 women that have come forward. But our criminal Justice System presumes you are innocent until proven guilty, and he has a crucial right to confront the person, in this case, constand, making the allegations against him and to put on the most aggressive defense that he can. Thats whats happening here. Doesnt it turn your stomach, areva . Hes walking in holding on to someones arm like hes blind. Just last year, he was doing standup shows, okay . So this whole facade of, oh, im frail and im an old man now. This is 2005, 11 years ago. Youre ignoring i dont think we can ignore what happened after this incident. I understand what youre saying about someones power being taken away from them if theyre drugged. Thats absolutely a crime. If that happened, he should be found guilty. But on the other hand, its not typical behavior for someone that has been sexually abused to continue to have a level of contact that were hearing about in this case. Thats not true areva. Whoa, whoa, areva. Abused women stay with their abuser. Come on. There are lots of cases where that doesnt happen. Come on. Prostitutes stay with pimps. Come on. To that very point of how the defense, we know, is going to play this and try to tear down constands credibility, how did the prosecutors respond . How do they counter that because they know its coming . Absolutely. What theyre going to have to do is try to establish that, yes, she may have had some inconsistencies with respect to her statement but she was abused. She wasnt able to control what happened in that situation, and that women often continue to have contact with their abusers. So we may see psychologists testify, other experts testifying about the mentality and the actions of someone thats been in an abusive situation. But i think we have to allow all of the evidence to come in. I think its premature to assume that cosby is going to be found either guilty or not guilty because we havent seen whats going to come in. We know that deposition testimony. Without it, i dont think the prosecution has a chance of getting a guilty conviction. But why . In that deposition, he says, i bought quaaludes, drugs, Illegal Drugs to give to women for the purpose of sex. Why do we need more evidence than that . Because thats what the criminal Justice System looks like. We cannot convict someone because of something they may have done to someone else. If im being charged for attacking, i should so a monster is not a monster . The fact that i attack you isnt relevant to whether i attacked her. We have to stay focused on the facts in this particular case. Just because bill cosby is a celebrity that justice for him should look different than it does for any other defendant. We know that there are Outstanding Civil cases. Any impact on this . Any crossover . I sure hope so. I do. Obviously if he is found guilty, that will be more fuel to the civil cases that are Going Forward. Some of those cases are barred by the statute of limitations but there are some active civil cases in california, and we know there are some active cases in boston. And if there is a guilty verdict in this case, i think it will help those civil plaintiffs in their cases, maybe help them get to larger settlements sooner. It might cause these cases to go away. Is this what our legal system has come to, that we suspend disbelieve and common sense . There are people on twitter yes. No, we dont suspend common sense. In between commercials on twitter, people are coming at us saying how can you say hes guilty and everyone has the right to fair trielt. My statement to those people is let him babysit your kids. Do you trust this man . We cant have a dual system for celebrities and noncelebrities. Mr. Cosby is entitled to be presumed innocent until he is found guilty . But do you believe as a lawyer, do you believe as a human being, do you believe this man is innocent . But that does not matter in the court of law what she believes. I believe he is entitled to the most incredibly aggressive defense that his dollars allow. You watched a murderer in o. J. Simpson walk free. Okay. We are not moving on to o. J. Bill cosby is not o. J. Areva hes worse than o. J. 50 women. A very spirited discussion. Again, bill cosby and his defense team maintain his innocence. Under our criminal Justice System, thats the status today. Lets reaffirm that point. As this goes forward, well have you back. Thank you. Time for a quick break. Next on cnn newsroom chaos on the streets as trump protesters get violent. Narrator the California Teachers Association educators who know quality Public Schools make a better california for all of us. Announcer this is cnn breaking news. Welcome back, everyone. Police are working to keep things calm after violent antitrump protests broke out in albuquerque, new mexico, tuesday. Hundreds of demonstrators have gathered outside a trump rally to protest his immigration plan, and the violence escalated throughout the night. A number of Police Officers were injured and at least one person was arrested. Heres dan simon. Reporter things are definitely calm now in downtown albuquerque, but you walk around, and these are some of the remnants on the street. This is an empty canister of pepper spray. We saw police employing that tactic just a short time ago to try to get crowds to calm down, if you will. I mean you had hundreds to begin with. Then as the police pushed the protesters down the street in the middle of the main thoroughfare in downtown albuquerque, you had the crowds begin to disperse. But quite a chaotic situation all evening. This really began when you had a group of protesters break through a barricade that police had set up to prevent protesters from going in the Convention Center where donald trump was giving his speech. They got close to the door, but police in riot gear kept them at bay. And from there, i have to say things quickly descended into chaos. You had protesters, as you said, throwing rocks and bottles at police. Police were showing remarkable restraint with these protesters, basically hoping that things would calm down. But things only escalated. They went to a main thoroughfare a couple of blocks away. Some were bouncing on police cars. They were lighting things on fire, and things were just completely out of control. Then police started using pepper spray. They started firing tear gas canisters into the crowd and ultimately that seemed to do the trick to get these crowds to go home. But quite a scene. This is not what we expected when we first got here this afternoon. We saw well over a thousand antitrump protesters congregating. This was a peaceful protest when donald trump came into town. Then as you had nightfall, mainly young people, not clear if they were part of that original protesting. Police say they want. They were just troublemakers, but clearly they caused quite a scene here in albuquerque. John and isha. Lets get to eric bowman, the democratic vice chair for california. And kabc talk radio host john phillips. A while night in albuquerque, john. Whats your take on this . What does this do for the Trump Campaign . Does he come under pressure regardless of whose to blame here . No. I think this helps him. I think the silent majority is watching these criminals on cnn tonight assault Police Officers, attack public property, go after police cars, and theyre appalled at whats going on. They see the mexican flag out there. Weve lived through this here in california in 1994 when proposition 187 was on the ballot, when governor pete wilson was running for reelection. And we saw protests that were very similar to this. And there was a backfire, a boom rang effect that happened, and proposition 187 ended up passing. And pete wilson ended up coming back. He was down double digits in the polls. He ended up winning a second term decisively. And since that day, no republican has ever won an office in california. Every latino voter virtually to the one in california votes for the democrats. And i think what you have seen, as is evidenced by Voter Registration in california, that donald trump has fired up latinos all across the america. There have been a million and a half voter registrants in california since the first of the year, and the largest number of latino voter registrants ever. Theyre all registering as democrats. This is going on in state after state after state because of the kind of demagoguic language that hes used from his wall on down. And john just quickly, i want to read Donald Trumps tweet in the aftermath of all of this. This is what he said. Great rally in new mexico. Amazing crowd. Now in l. A. Big rally in anaheim. Is that good enough as a response to all of this, just to put that out and not to directly address the scenes we saw on the streets . Absolutely. Hes not responsible for the violence that was going on outside the building. The people who are committing those acts of violence are responsible for it. Ive got to say this. Eric is a guy who if he was there in albuquerque, he would be out there with the Voter Registration forms or maybe the pict si picket signs. He wouldnt be burning things down or attacking Police Officers. If you dont like what donald trump is saying, theres a right way of responding to and theres a wrong way of responding to it. What youre seeing tonight is the wrong way. The police in albuquerque says the scenes we saw towards the end, those were not antitrump i dont know why they want to bend over backwards to make excuses for these people when the violence just didnt start a few minutes ago. The violence has been going on throughout the evening. So there were fires. There were rocks being thrown. There were laws being broken long ago. Gentlemen, a pleasure. Thank you. Thank you. Spirited. Very spirited. Lets take a look at where things stand after tonights primary. Trump is now within striking distance of winning the republican president ial nomination after that victory in washington state. He won 76 of the vote counted so far. There is more information about the final hours of egyptair flight 804. Egyptian state media published images of a log one of the pilots signed saying the plane was in normal condition with no issues. That coincides with french statements that the plane passed inspection before takeoff. Well, the planes data and cockpit voice recorders are still missing. The jet crashed into the mediterranean last thursday with 66 people onboard. Now, it has been six days since the flight disappeared from radar, and there are no clear answers on why it went down. Brian todd reports on the evidence investigators are working with so far. Reporter conflicting accounts of the final moments of egyptair flight 804 now deepening the mystery over the planes fate. Still unknown whether there was an explosion onboard. The initial answer may come from the bodies. An official at the cairo morgue tells cnn more than 15 bags of human remains have been delivered to the morgue. The official says those remains are small in size. Egyptairs vice chairman is refuting remarks from some egyptian officials that small body parts indicate there was an explosion onboard. In any high velocity impact it leads to defragmentations and this is not indicative of to what caused the accident. So as of now, this is all speculation. Reporter veteran investigators tell cnn body recovery is critical. A detailed examination of the bodies could reveal important clues. You would xray the bodies to look for fragments of bomb blast and things like that. That may give you information. Reporter egyptian Officials Say relatives of those onboard have been giving dna samples to help match whats been found to possible victims. So far, only small pieces of debris have been recovered. Pieces of seats, luggage, life vests, personal belongings. No major parts of the fuselage have been located. Another point of contention, did jpt flight 804 make a dramatic swerve before it vanished . Shortly avenue the crash, the Greek Defense minister said radar indicated the plane swerved 90 degrees left, then 360 degrees right before it plummeted. But a top egyptian aviation official now denies that, saying the aircraft did not swerve or make a precipitous drop in altitude before it disappeared. A veteran controller and radar expert says its possible neither official is wrong. That theyre saying simply what their own respective radars picked up. He said because the plane had just flown over greece before it vanished, greek controllers may have gotten a more detailed picture of its track. The greeks had potentially multiple surveillance radars tracking theary plane. The airplane was still in relatively close proximity. They would have been able to have a much higher resolution on what the airplane was doing. The egyptian radar may have been much further away when the egyptair flight came into their airspace. They only tracked it for about a minute before it disappeared. Investigators and aviation experts tell us the definitive information as to whether the plane swerved, took a precipitous dive, or whether there was an explosion onboard will come from the black boxes. But recovering those is seemingly becoming more difficult. Egyptairs vice chairman told cnn the search area is the size of connecticut. Brian todd, cnn, washington. U. S. President barack obama is on his way to japan, the next stop on his weeklong trip to asia. He left Ho Chi Minh City a short time ago after a town hall meeting with Young Leaders. In japan, mr. Obama will meet with other World Leaders for the g7 summit. President obamas principal goal for this trip was to strengthen the partnership between the u. S. And vietnam. Its clear what vietnam has gained from the president s visit, but what did the u. S. Really get out of all of this . Reporter well, isha, youre right. Vietnam has been making it clear that they are gaining a lot from this. The reviews of the trip here in vietnam have been pretty positive. This one says, piece better than war. Its quoting president obama in his address yesterday and this article reflects on the fact the president came here to sort of talk about how much the relationship has transformed between vietnam and the u. S. In the postwar era. The goals of this trip, the stated goals of this trip for both vietnam and the u. S. Were to improve security and Economic Cooperation between the two countries. When you talk about what the u. S. Gains from this trip, well, this has been an opportunity for president obama to continue to pitch tpp, the transpacific trade deal which he hopes will become a signature part of his legacy. It remains stalled in washington at the moment. But vietnam and the u. S. Are not the only interested parties in this trip. Youve got a big third party thats carefully watching this, and that, of course, is china. People in china are closely scrutinizing the evolution of this relationship between vietnam and the u. S. In fact, there was an editorial that ran in a state media newspaper which said whatever common interests the two countries pursue, they should never comprise chinas National Interests and threaten regional security. That, of course, would be in reference to the fact that president obama did announce while he was here that the u. S. Would no longer ban the sale of arms to vietnam. That has been perceived by some as a move to counter chinas growthing strength in the region. The president has said that is not the case. That this is just a further commitment to stabilizing and normalizing the relations between the u. S. And vietnam. The editorial in chinas paper concludes by saying, we hope obama means what he says. Thats the view from china. Alexandra, the president heading to japan for that g7 summit, but i guess the real highlight will be the visit to hiroshima. Reporter absolutely. Hes got the meeting with g7 leaders. Hes got a meeting with japanese Prime Minister shinzo abe, but all eyes will be on the moments that he spends at hiroshima. He will be the first u. S. President to visit the site of the first atomic bomb attack. This will certainly be a poignant moment, we expect, a reflective moment, we expect, and it does tie into some of the broader themes of the trip. Weve heard from his Senior Administration officials who have sort of framed this trip by saying that its important to the president to communicate this point that the u. S. Should not be imprisoned by the past. This is a trip that reflects on, you know, very complicated past with vietnam, also with japan, and in setting the tone for more cooperation in the future. John. Alexandra field live this hour for us with the very latest on president obamas trip to asia, his tenth trip to asia. Still trying to make that pivot. Thanks, alex. Protesters set several small fires and threw rocks and bottles at police. Officers responded with pepper spray. A trump adviser called the demonstrators thugs and punks, he went on to say they dont even know what theyre protesting. Trump is now very close to clinching the republican nomination after winning the washington primary. He has about 76 of the vote so far. Ted cruz and john kasich were still on the ballot even though theyve dropped out of the race. John kasich did almost as well as he was doing when he was actually in the race. Cnn estimates trump now has 1229 delegates, just eight shy of the number he needs to clinch the nomination. Well, a New Washington post abc news poll suggests that 20 of Bernie Sanders supporters would actually back donald trump, not Hillary Clinton, in a matchup in november. They say that now. Our gary tucker went to a sanders rally and asked voters who theyd support should the senator from vermont be defeated. Reporter Bernie Sanders most loyal supporters are conceding nothing. Do you still think he can get the nomination . Yes. If he can win california, i think we can get the nomination. Yes. Bernie or bust. Reporter if the sanders supporters here in anaheim, california, are wrong, Hillary Clinton would certainly like and likely need to have their votes. But many here have doubts about her integrity and trustworthiness. The animosity cannot be overlooked. If Hillary Clinton faces donald trump in november, who would you vote for . Well, you have your choice between the corrupt and the stupid, so ill take hillary. Reporter for Hillary Clinton, at least that means spirited endorsement equals a vote. Other sanders supporters here wont even consider it. I could vote third party. I could write in Bernie Sanders. If Bernie Sanders doesnt get the nomination, i know youre still hopeful he will, and Hillary Clinton faces donald trump in november, who will you vote for . I dont think anyone here cares about Hillary Clinton. Nobody but you guys. There are people who clear. Obviously not you. Thats my question, though. What do you do in november . Dont think anyone here cares about Hillary Clinton. You dont want to say . If she wins, great. This is the last time shes going to win. And some sanders supporters dollars like her so much ill probably vote donald trump. They are considering doing what many others here consider unthinkable. Reporter what is the reason youd vote for donald trump . I guess just to not vote for Hillary Clinton. Reporter the fact is there are sanders supporters here who care very much about the Democratic Party, and the party not losing the white house. Reporter if he doesnt get the nomination and its Hillary Clinton against donald trump, who will you vote for in november . Definitely hillary. Definitely hillary. Hillary. No choice there. Hillary. Reporter but the atmosphere here, while antitrump, was also anticlinton. But it is not just it is not just donald trump. My democratic opponent, secretary clinton [ crowd booing ] reporter there are still more than 5 1 2 months to go until the general election. But what stands out now is this. Many of the Hillary Clinton criticisms that comes from Bernie Sanders supporters at this rally are identical to the criticisms of Hillary Clinton we hear from Trump Supporters at one of his rallies. Were going to march out with the democratic nomination. Reporter here in anaheim, Bernie Sanders is still the one and only for most of these people. Never hillary. Never trump. Thats a waste of all of our time. Bernie sanders didnt have a lot to say about Hillary Clinton at his earlier event. But when he talked about her fundraising or her wall street ties, his supporters erupted in boos. Not surprisingly, he had more to stay about donald trump, at one point declaring that if he won the democratic nomination, donald trump would be, quote, toast. His supporters went wild. Bernie sanders, it appears as of now, is still at full throttle. This is gary tuchman, cnn, in San Bernardino, california. The fight is far from over. They say they wont vote now. As we speak, several Police Officers are being treated for injuries, and this comes after protesters pelted them with rocks and bottles outside a donald trump rally in albuquerque, new mexico. At least one person was arrested as the demonstrators jumped on cars and set small fires in the streets there. Officers in riot gear and on horseback responded with pepper spray. Youll be fine. Youll be fine. Ow. Dont wipe it. Dont wipe it . Someo we need water. Our dan simon was caught up in the middle of the mayhem and the pepper spry, in pact. He filed this report. Reporter it has been a chaotic situation in downtown albuquerque as antitrump protesters have taken to the streets. You can see Police Officers there in full riot gear. Some officers on horseback. And before all of that kicked off, there were actually more protests inside the trump rally as well. At least one person was arrested, and security had to forcibly remove several demonstrators there. Trump took the opportunity to go after the democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton. I see these low lives. She puts on an ad, did you know that donald trump was rooting against housing because he wanted housing to go down because he wanted to buy. And theyve got some clips from me years ago that said, yeah, if it goes down, im going to buy. Im a businessman. Thats what im supposed to do. They say im setting records with men. Thats so unexciting to me. I want to set records with women, not with men. The system is rigged against Bernie Sanders, so he cant win. But im hearing were going to get close to 40 of his supporters. Meanwhile trump is now very close to clinching the republican nomination after winning the washington primary. He has about 76 of the vote. Cnn now estimates trump has 1,229 delegates. Thats just eight shy of the number needed to win the nomination. As for the democrats, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are focusing on california. The states primary is just two weeks away. Clinton kicked off a swing across the western u. S. With three stops around los angeles. At one rally, she called Donald Trumps campaign really, really concerning and took aim at his controversial remarks on the Housing Market. Listen. We saw him doubling down on comments he made a couple years ago because he said that a mortgage crisis would have been good for his business. And i got to tell you why on earth would we elect somebody president who actually rooted for the collapse of the Mortgage Market . Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is refusing to bow out of the race even though hes far behind clinton in the delegate count. Sanders campaigning in california over the past few days, telling his supporters that he is the best democrat to defeat republican donald trump. Donald trump will not become president because in every National Poll done in the last two months, i defeat him, and we defeat him not only we defeat him by in some cases double digits. Joining us now, democratic strategist dave jake on son and republican consultant john thomas, thank you, gentlemen, for being with us. Thanks for having us. Thanks for joining us from l. A. Of course the protests you saw in new mexico are kind of the top story here. That combined with the fact that the female hispanic governor said she was too busy to attend Donald Trumps rally, doesnt that expose some of the shortcomings trump has as the nominee, presumptive nominee, with hispanics and with women, these crucial voting blocs . How worried should his campaign be at this stage, john . Yeah, it does. Youre right, it does expose some weaknesses. Hes got a lot of ground to make up. Hes got some work to do. I think he has to focus on an Advertising Campaign to women showing how hes empowered women through his trump organization, not some of the divisive rhetoric that weve seen in the primary process. Hes already started to walk that back. I think he can do it. But, look, tonights protests protests are healthy. Thats great. But when they turn violent, thats a problem. A lot of people we saw, they werent protesters. They were thugs. And, dave, i want to talk to you because Donald Trumps of course within he had that big win in washington state. That puts him just within reach of the 1,237 delegates he needs to clinch the nomination for his party. Hillary clinton, on the other hand, shes fighting on two fronts, against trump and Bernie Sanders. And now of course were seeing all these attack ads and they are getting down and dirty pretty early on here. Weve got this for six more months. No how do voters generally respond to really negative campaigns like this, particularly when candidates clinton, and trump, particularly, just arent liked by a lot of people . Rosemary, youre absolutely right. The reality is campaigns use negative tactics because they work. And this ultimately is going to become a general election which is going to be a race to the bottom. I think both campaigns are going to be lobbying, you know, attacks every day moving forward up until the november election, both of which are going to be driving up the negatives of their opponent in the hopes that their opponent will be perceived by voters to be a more unfavorable candidate than themselves. But, look, i think the sort of explosive nature of what we saw tonight in new mexico underscores the real challenge that donald trump has moving forward. This sort of divisive, chaotic, you know, almost volcanic explosive nature of his candidacy really highlights the challenge he has in moving to a general election narrative where he has to really make a case to voters that hes going to be a uniter in chief and sort of bring together all americans to move our country forward. But, dave, the democrats have issues too. You talk about each side needing to unite. How concerned should some democrats be that youve got Bernie Sanders supporters saying theyll vote for trump if Hillary Clinton is the nominee. Is there much validation in that . Does it matter . Theres a fraction of the Bernie Sanders supporters who are saying that now. But if you look eight years ago, 40 of Hillary Clintons supporters at one time were saying they would not support barack obama in a general election. Obviously those numbers dissipated, and overwhelmingly clinton supporters lined up behind barack obama once she enthusiastically endorsed him and became one of his chief surrogates on the campaign trail. And, john, talking about unity, its a difficult job on the republican side as well, isnt it . I mean trump is still trying to bring people on board, and he just doesnt seem to be able to appeal to the women vote right now. Sure. Well, first of all, to daves point, Hillary Clinton is no barack obama in 2008. It was easier for barack obama to unite his party. He was an inspirational figure. So i dont think that actually applies. But youre right. Donald trump has to i dont think hes ever going to end up winning the majority of people, but he has to stop hemorrhaging women. Hes got a problem. We have noticed that republicans are largely coalescing and in fact abc just this evening said that paul ryan plans to officially endorse donald trump this week. But how big of a difference do you think that will make because you have senators like john mccain in arizona. This is a state that has consistently gone for republicans. Now if you look at polling, it could be a purple state, a tossup between democrats and republicans because of the hispanic voting bloc there. You know, do you think donald trump needs to do more to win over establishment figures . No. I think the establishment will end up coming in time. Its actually a delicate line for donald trump to walk because he has to hes the change candidate. He has to tap into the 66 of americans in the latest gallup poll that say america is on the wrong track. So, look, its okay if hes a bully. He just cant be a schoolyard bully. He has to be your bully. And, dave, you get the last word here. Because it is a big problem when youre looking at these candidates. Theyre not particularly popular. What is it that they have to do . What advice would you give them, particularly clinton because she just cant seem to appeal to a lot of people out there, particularly white men . Right. Look, i think after the democratic primary process is over, youre going to see the splintering within the Democratic Party sort of end, and youre going to see this coalescing around clinton as the nominee, particularly when Bernie Sanders sort of lines up behind Hillary Clinton and becomes one of her chief surrogates on the campaign trail. Hes going to help her break through and appeal to all of his supporters, white, working class voters, independent voters, young people who have enthusiastically been supporting his campaign. You know, once the convention process sort of moves forward and you have that uniting process, i think youre going to see her numbers tick up in some of these National Polls. So, dave, youre making the point that you dont think any longterm damage has been done by Bernie Sanders still digging in his heels, still saying hell campaign . You know, hes been all around california, still saying that hes better against donald trump. You dont think there will be long damage from that . Look, even back in march, tad devine was quoted with politico hinting that Bernie Sanders would sort of be open to potentially being on Hillary Clintons ticket. Its clear theres going to be some coalescing at some point. But theres no doubt he has sort of fanned the flames in terms of the fracturing in the party. The dnc has sort of tried to pacify some of his supporters by allocating five of his supporters to the dnc Platform Committee which helps to sort of draw the issues and the platform for a convention. Youre already seeing that coalescing beginning behind the scenes. Dave jake on son, john thomas, six more months of this. Going to be fun, isnt it . Cant wait. Thank you. For more on the republican and democratic president ial races, head over to cnn. Com politics. Theres some new fox emerging about egyptair flight 804s final moments. Egyptian state media report the plane transmitted 11 electronic messages from the time it departed paris. The first showed the engines were working. The next messages showed a rise in the temperature of the copilots window. Smoke was also present. Ian lee joins us now from cairo with the very latest. Ian, of course the loved ones of those souls lost in this plane crash, they want some answers here. And likely wont get them until those black boxes are found. But what is being made of this new information . What does it tell us exactly . Reporter well, what this new information just confirms is what weve been hearing in the final moments of that flight about this window heating up, about smoke being detected in the lavatory as well as in the avionics. But other than that, it doesnt give us much more insight into what we already know. There has been a focus, an investigation at the morgue here in cairo as well. 15 bags of body parts have been brought to the morgue. Morgue officials telling us that a lot of them are quite small, but thats not necessarily an indication of an explosion. They say when a plane falls from 37,000 feet, that can also be a cause of that. Theyre saying that the main focus, though, right now is testing them. Theyve been in the water for quite some time. They are going to test them, though, for any residue from an explosion. Also the real big one of the real primary tests is going to be on dna, trying to identify them and also get them back to their family members so that they can give the remains a proper burial. They are grim details in this part of the investigation, of course. But what are egyptian authorities telling us about the search and Recovery Mission and how long this may take to locate the fuselage and hopefully those black boxes to solve this mystery . Reporter egyptian officials havent really given us a timeline of when they hope to find the black boxes or the fuselage for that matter. But it is a bit of a ticking clock. Theres a battery inside those data recorders that sends out a ping to help searchers locate them, but that battery lasts for about 30 days. After that, its going to be far more difficult to locate those black boxes. But right now we also know that they have been collecting pieces of the debris. Theres been 18 groups as egyptian officials have said. They hope to have some sort of initial report out within a months time to talk about what they believe the leading theory is behind the crash. But its still very much early for them in this investigation to determine definitively what they believe has happened. They do need to get those black boxes and that fuselage. Indeed. A month away seems a very long time. It is 9 15 in the morning there in cairo, egypt. Our ian lee joining us with that live report. Many thanks. Lots more to come for you this hour. New offensives against isis launched on two different strongholds. Next, concerns for the civilians caught in the crossfire. Plus a dramatic new turn in the bill cosby scandal. Hes been ordered to stand trial. Well have details on that when we come back. Oting, burning, pinsandneedles of diabetic nerve pain, these feet played shortstop in high school, learned the horn from my dad and played gigs from new york to miami. But i couldnt bear my diabetic nerve pain any loer. So i talked to my doctor and he prescribed lyrica. Nerve damage from diabetes causes diabetic nerve pain. Lyrica is fda approved to treat this pain, from moderate to even severe diabetic nerve pain. Lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions or suicidal thoughts or actions. Tell your doctor right away if you have these, new or worsening depression, or unusual changes in mood or behavior. Or swelling, trouble breathing, rash, hives, blisters, muscle pain with fever, tired feeling or blurry vision. Common side effects are dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain and swelling of hands, legs, and feet. Dont drink alcohol while taking lyrica. Dont drive or use machinery until you know how lyrica affects you. Those who have had a drug or alcohol problem may be more likely to misuse lyrica. Now i have less diabetic nerve pain. And these feet would like to keep the beat going. Ask your doctor about lyrica. Welcome back. Were learning about a major change in taliban leadership. A Spokesman SaysMawlawi Haibatullah akhundzada is the groups new afghan leader. He replaces mullah Akhtar Mohammad mansour, who was killed on saturday during a u. S. Air strike in pakistan. In afghanistan, ten people were killed during a Suicide Attack in kabul. The interior Ministry Says the bombing targets a vehicle carrying Court Employees of a neighboring province. So far, no one is claiming respond for that attack, which happens just a short time ago. Two offensives are under way against isis strong holds. An alliance of kurdish and arab forces is moving to retake the militants de facto capital in raqqah, syria. An Activity Group said a clash took place on the northern outskirts on tuesday. A u. S. Coalition is providing assistance and advice in those battles. The second effective is in falluja, where the Iraqi Military is fighting to reclaim the sunnidominated city from isis. Falluja was the first iraqi city isis captured in january 2014. The u. N. Is pleading for safe passage for the thousands of iraqis trapped there. Our best estimate is that there could be as many as 50,000 people who are still trapped inside the city. Our understanding is that the conditions are very dramatic. We have reports from people who are on the ground, from key informants, who are saying that hundreds of people in the last three days have been trying to get out of the city. Theyve been trying to flee along the corridors that are being established by the Iraqi Security forces. Were terribly worried about whats happening to them. Were worried that there at risk from artillery, from air strikes, and from crossfire. We do want to get to that aspect of the story. But first more details on both offensives. Ben wedeman joins us now. Ben, what information do you have on the progress being made in both raqqah and falluja to seize back these cities from isis . Reporter well, to start with raqqah, which of course is the de facto capital of isis, that is not a battle, an offensive to retake raqqah. Its really just to take some of the countryside to the north of the city. Its being led by the socalled Syrian Democratic forces, which are really dominated by the Syrian Kurdish ypg or the Peoples Protection unit. They have been armed, supported, in some cases trained by the United States. It includes an arab component. And we understand from the activist group in raqqah, a group called raqqah has been slaughtered silently that there have been intense clashes to the north of the city as well as coalition airstrikes. But theyre also saying, this group, raqqah is being slaughtered silently, that because this is a kurdishdominated force and, of course, raqqah is a predominantly sunni arab city, that many of the residents are in a sense caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. They dont particularly like isis, but theyre very worried about the repercussions of a kurdishled offensive in an area thats predominantly arab sunni. And therefore many of the residents of raqqah, despite their problems, their qualms, their objections to many aspects of isis rule are, in fact, more worried about a kurdish offensive. And therefore isis in a sense may benefit from their support in this case. Rosemary. And, ben, i want to go back to the big concern of the thousands of civilians who were caught up, not able to get out of falluja because isis wont let them leave. What are you hearing about the situation confronting those people trying to escape . Reporter well, as we heard from the united nations, the situation is dire. They believe as many as 50,000 people are still in the city. Now, the u. N. Says as many as 80 families have managed to flee since the 20th of may. But weve also seen reports that isis is not letting anybody leave. They would probably be the last ones to respect humanitarian corridors, and that isis has in fact set up sniper positions to shoot anybody trying to leave the city. And we understand several civilians, including women and children, have been shot as they tried to leave the city. And of course even if they dont leave the city, theyre also in danger from bombardment from iraqi forces, which we understand have been using artillery in the last several days against the city. There have been air strikes against Islamic State targets within the city. Now, the Iraqi Government, of course, has advised people to leave. But its very difficult. Those who cant leave, theyve been told to put up white flags. But thats the sort of thing that isis will take full advantage of. So its a dire situation on top of the fact that falluja has been under siege from iraqi forces for months now, and the city has been suffering from a lack of water, a lack of food, and a a lack of fresh water, that is, clean water, and a lack of medicine. So sort of whether you go or you stay when it comes to falluja, if youre a civilian, youre in trouble. Indeed. Ben wedeman bringing us up to date on the situation there in iraq. The fight against isis and talking to us there live from rome. It is 9 25 in the morning, and we thank you, ben, for bringing us up to date on the situation. Well, before Hillary Clinton can truly focus on the general election, she needs to wrap up the democratic nomination. But Bernie Sanders isnt going quietly. Why he says things could get messy at the partys convention. Were back with that and more. Stay with us. Welcome back to those of you watching here in the states and those of you tuned in around the globe. This is cnn newsroom. Im Errol Barnett. And im Rosemary Church. It is time to check the headlines for you. Police in albuquerque, new mexico, have broken up a violent crowd outside a donald trump rally. Officers used pepper spray after protesters set several small fires and threw rocks and bottles. At least one person was arrested and several officers were injured. There is a new leader for the afghan taliban. Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada will take over the Group Following the death of mullah mansour. Thats according to a spokesman. Mansour was killed on saturday by a u. S. Drone strike in pakistan. The eurozone has reached what it called a breakthrough deal to offer debt relief to greece. 19 European Finance ministers agreed to give athens 10. 3 billion in new funding starting with a 7. 5 disbursement in june. The International Monetary fund will help fund the bailout. We mentioned this at the top of the hour. Democrat Bernie Sanders is refusing to step aside in the race for the white house despite his big deficit in delegates. The vermont senator has said the partys Upcoming Convention could get messy. He says that doesnt mean violent. He just expects some vigorous debate on the issues. But frontrunner Hillary Clinton has already shifted her focus to the general election and donald trump. We may have talked in the past about how we have a bully pulpit in the white house, but that doesnt mean we want a bully in the white house. We defeat him by, in some cases, double digits. And by far greater numbers than does secretary clinton. So if the Democratic Party wants a candidate who is going to defeat trump and defeat him bad, we are that campaign. Joining me now from los angeles is see ma meta, shes a Political Writer for the l. A. Times. Sima, thanks so much for joining us today. Secretary clinton is refusing to comment on Donald Trumps tabloid accusations. She has called him a bully while speaking there to a crowd in l. A. Just a few hours ago. And previously she said donald trump was a loose cannon. What is the Campaign Strategy against him as far as you see it because to me, it seems as if its still in flux for her. I think theyre still trying to figure it out because she is still sort of at the very end of this competitive democratic primary and shes sort of pivoting to the general election. Today we saw secretary clinton go after trump about comments he made about the housing crisis, that basically if the Housing Market went south egg could make a lot of money on that. Shes used this to paint him as this heartless guy who is not looking out for whats best for the country but instead for whats best for his possibilick. The unique position shes in is that shes fighting on two fronts. Bernie sanders is continuing to push for another debate. Hes making the case that hes stronger in polls against donald trump than clinton is, and he already won the right to appoint, what, five of the 15member Democratic Panel that will create the Party Platform at the convention. Right. Do clinton supporters, do democrats think this is really helpful to them as he says it is . Im sure many of his supporters would like to see him go away, but he has shown no signs of going away. But what i think is interesting is if you look at his messaging in the last couple days, he is not going after her as hard as he used to, even a week ago. In the past when he would bring up issues such as the iraq war, Campaign Finance, fracking, areas where they have notable disagreements, he would use this as an opportunity to see heres what i believe. Secretary clinton believes something else. But now he sort of glosses over that. He is still making sort of the case that in certain polls that he fares better against donald trump than secretary clinton does, but hes notably sort of taken a step back in terms of how hes approaching her. And if you look at democratic enthusiasm in the state of california, registration is up, what, 43. 7 of overall voters compared to 27. 5 of overall voters. Thats according to the l. A. Times, and its up, what, 218 when compared to 2012. So is the bernie camp accurate in saying that this debate has actually enthused the overall base . I mean it certainly has you know, you go to his rallies. You see thousands of people every day going to his rallies. People who are saying that theyve never been involved in the political process before. But the numbers are a little confusing because in 2012 there was not a competitive race on the democratic side because president obama was running for reelection. So democrats were not as enthused about turning out then. Plus we dont know whats motivating the people who are registering, whether its enthusiasm for Bernie Sanders. You also have other groups like latino groups who are really active in registering voters in opposition to donald trump. So for all the new voters, the question is, is it enthusiasm for Bernie Sanders . Is it wanting to get out there and vote against donald trump. In terms of women, the Hillary Clinton has certainly been targeting women voters, saying that this is a historic moment for you to vote for a woman for president. Are they registering for that . One bad sign for Bernie Sanders is california has an open primary. Sanders has tended to do well in open primaries, but in california, if youre declined state voter or no political reference voter, and youre a mail voter, you need to request a democratic ballot. Very few numbers have and if that doesnt change, thats a real problem for him. Still fascinating to watch all of this unfold. Sima metta, thanks for your time today. Thank you. President barack obama is now on his way to japan, where he will attend the g7 summit. He left Ho Chi Minh City, vietnam, earlier after a town hall meeting with Young Leaders. When asked how vietnam can be preserved, mr. Obama urged the crowd to fight climate change. We have to think about beautiful areas that need to be preserved, but we also have to recognize that no matter how well we preserve one or two areas in each country, if the overall climate patterns change radically, then were all going to be in a really difficult situation. Cnns alexandra field joins us now live from Ho Chi Minh City, vietnam. Alexandra, we mentioned there and we heard there from the president. He held that town hall meeting earlier with Young Leaders. What were some of the other headlines that came out of that meeting . Reporter you know, rosemary, this trip has had so many headlines from the decision to drop the ban on arms sales to vietnam, to the president coming here to promote human rights, to him talking a lot about the evolution of the relationship between vietnam and the u. S. But this morning was actually sort of a change, a departure from that, a moment that was a little more lighthearted where he really did entertain a lot of questions from young people in vietnam and he actually got a lot of laughs. There was one moment i think stuck out for a lot of people when a young rapper got up and asked the president a question. In response he asked her a question, which was to rap for him. So listen to what happened next. [ rapping in Foreign Language ] well, that was good. Reporter shes still a part of the show, but even before she started rapping, the president offered to beat box for her, and he gave us a little bit of that. So that was certainly a crowd pleaser. Then he did pivot at another point when a young person asked him a little bit about his future and the future in the u. S. The president took a couple of minutes to reflect on the race for president going on back in the United States. Heres what he said about that. In terms of american politics, i tend to be positive and optimistic about american politics. I think sometimes other countries look at our election system and we think and people think, wow, what a mess. But usually we end up doing okay because the American People are good people. Reporter all right. He ends it on an optimistic note there. Certainly the u. S. President ial candidates have not been far from mind over the course of this trip because we know that president obama has been out here to promote what he hopes will be a signature trade deal, the tpp. Thats something that has stalled in d. C. , and both Hillary Clinton and donald trump have said that they oppose it. So the future of that uncertain. Certainly people have been wondering about it as the president continues his tour out here, rosemary. Yeah, indeed. Alexandrafield joining us. It is about 2 39 in the afternoon there in Ho Chi Minh City. Now of course the u. S. President heading to japan. Well see what happens on that leg of the trip. Many thanks. The preliminary hearing, a very important hearing determined by the magistrate judge that the prosecution had probable cause that bill cosby sexually assaulted Andrea Constand in 2004 when inviting her to his home, he gave her blue pills, had her drink wine, and then sexually assaulted her. Event swale ans are already dealing with blackouts and an energy kries as well as political uncertainty. Now theres no cocacola.
