Also two close calls between airliners and drones near a new york airport. Just what dangers do these machines pose to flying passenger jets. From cnn world had headquarters in atlanta, im George Howell. This is cnn newsroom. Good day to you. Welcome to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. We start this hour with the latest on mh370 and that plane debris that was found on a Remote Island in the indian ocean. It washed ashore at reunion island and now that piece of debris is in a french lab in toulouse france. It arrived on saturday. Investigators wont start looking at it until wednesday. Their goal is to determine whether it might belong to Malaysia Airlines flight 370. That as youll remember has been missing since march of last year. A source close to the investigation says a preliminary report could be released as early as next week. If it is from mh370 this would be the first piece of physical evidence from that flight and it could provide much needed clues to what happened to that plane and the 239 people who were on board. Cnn correspondent david malko is following this investigation. The investigation is happening in france but investigators from all over the world will be part of this. Can you explain . George thats right. This will be handled delicately and with a lot of sensitivity. French has jurisdiction over this piece of debris because of where it turned up on reunion island but the malaysians are leading the investigation. Youre going to have teams from the United States from the ntsb and boeing coming in as well. The reason this is taking so long is because it needs to be done by the book. Everybody has to get on the same page and agree how theyre going to proceed, the french have opened a criminal inquiry so the court system is also involved. Once they actually go into the lab and begin to take a look at this george looking for two things one, can they tie it definitively to a 777. We know there a couple of numbers on this that officials believe, yes, that they can tie to a 777, the malaysians said were sure it is from a 777 as well. More significantly is there anything unique about it that can tie it to mh370 a number on the inside a part a marking on it that might be found, maintenance record. All of this critical work george they have to get it right because as you said this is the only thing in 500 days the only potential piece of physical evidence they have to go on. David, as the world waits for this as we mentioned, the source close to the investigation says that a preliminary report could be released as early as next week. What more can you tell us about that . George it all depends on the timing of what they are able to find out, when they when investigators go into the lab and take a look at this. It is true that the assessment from speaking to investigators, that the assessment of if it is connected to a 777 or mh370 could come rather quickly. That could be an exterior examination, they might be looking for markings i mentioned, serial numbers and so on. What could take longer and what will take longer is analysis of the damage. Theyre going to take it apart. Theyre going to look at the barnacles, will have metal experts there to try to determine if it came off the aircraft in the air, or in the water. All of that could take some time as well. George meanwhile, we cannot forget the families who are watching this the 239 families watching this very very closely. Again, at the end of the day, this is a humethan tragedy. They are counting on investigators to get this right. In their words, 99 certainty isnt enough. They want 100 certainty that this is or is not from the missing plane. Youve been on the story since the start of it and, you know well stay in touch with you because as you mentioned, these families are waiting for 100 accuracy and, you know investigators are determined to be very deliberate in their response as they investigate this piece of debris. Well stay in touch with you to get the details. Thank you. Air crimes investigator says the answers to what happened to mh370 may not be at the bottom of the indian ocean. He suggests another look at the pilots may be in order. Kyung lah has the story. Reporter captain shah two men in charge of mh370 when it vanished. The last transmission spoken by captain zahari age 53 a veteran who joined Malaysia Airlines in 1981 logging 18,000 hours of flying experience. Father of three, passionate about aviation. So much so that he built a Flight Simulator in his home in this gated community. Zahari wanted to share what he knew posting aviation tutorial videos on his own you tube channel. After the planes disappearance, questions ss swirled around his marital status. But an Investigation Committee found no indications that cast suspicion on him or his copilot. This is copilot fariq, he was in the cockpit. Age 27, he joined the airline in 2007 much less experience than his captain. This picture cast doubt on fariqs conduct in the cockpit. Two south African Women say fariq invited them into the cockpit during a 2011 flight a breach of safety rules. As the search stretched into months former faa investigator Thomas Anthony kept returning to this question why the systematic shutdown of tracking devices aboard the plane. Is that a coincidence . It is an incredible coincidence. Reporter anthony spent 25 years with the faa and tsa investigating crimes against civil aviation. He agrees with the initial u. S. Assessment that there was a deliberate act from mh370s cockpit. And in part because mh370s disappearance feels so familiar. Anthony investigated the crash of egypt air flight 990, many concluded it was caused by pilot suicide. Silk air flight 185, american authorities also determined it crashed because of actions taken by the pilot. Reporter what is your theory now regarding mh370 . In view of the context of all of the evidence of everything on the ground and what has been found, it looks like it that the most likely theory would be intentional interference by the pilot. I think that this investigation can only be solved on the ground. It may have clues at the bottom of the ocean. It may have clues on the beaches of reunion island but i think the answers, the final answers of why this happened can only be determined on the ground. Reporter kyung lah, cnn, los angeles. The search on reunion island continues. Investigators there are hoping to find more debris on that Remote Island. And more possible clues as to what happened to this missing plane. We will continue to monitor the search efforts and the investigation for you here on cnn. Other news were following around the world, the u. S. Secretary of state john kerry is in egypt right now meeting with his counterpart in cairo. He has just finished speaking alongside the egyptian foreign minister. This is part of kerrys week long tour of the middle east. He and egyptian leaders are discussing military cooperation and concerns over human rights. Monday mr. Kerry will head to qatar to try to ease worries there over the new iran nuclear deal. After a violent week in israel thousands of protesters flooded the streets on saturday pleading for peace. There were several rallies held. This was the scene here in tel aviv. People marching to condemn a stabbing attack at a jerusalem gay pride parade that left six people wounded and comes as clashes in the west bank also turned deadly. These protesters after a Palestinian Team was shot and killed by israeli troops during a protest over the weekend. An Israeli Military spokeswoman says the person hurled a molotov cook cocktail at an army post just north of ramallah. Nic robertson is live in jerusalem with more on what is happening there. Good to have you with us. Palestinians blame the israeli policies for the arson that killed a toddler recently. But Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu has taken a strong stance against it calling this an act of terrorism. Nothing less than that. What more is he saying . Reporter well hes also saying that the government should work with palestinians to find the perpetrators and that this is a moment where they should really join forces and work together. Palestinian leaders are being more skeptical. They are saying that they believe that it is the settlement issue and the governments treatment of settlers that is at the root of all of this left wing rally last night against violence held in tel aviv 2,000 to 3,000 people turned up. There were speeches there condemning the actions of the israeli Prime Minister. But one of the speakers politician left wing politician said it was the government that had seasonally put the fuel in the firebomb that was thrown at the house where that toddler was burned the parents the mother in particular fighting for her life were told. The father the brother of the toddler also very seriously injured. Another left wing politician there, the head of a labor party, isaac herzog the leader of the opposition at the moment said if he was in Prime Minister netanyahus shoes, what he would do would be to tell the Security Services to bring the perpetrators to justice. Also said that the government should treat jewish terrorists these are his words, jewish terrorists the same way they treat islamic terrorists. But he also said that he would reach out to the palestinians as well to try to solve this issue. But like we heard from the palestinian authorities, many of those gathered there really believe it is the governments policy toward suttettlers. Not just to condemn the attack against the palestinian. We came here to condemn the israeli policy and it is much bigger than that. We came here to say the om operation, the result of the occupation the result of the policy that says one person has full rights and the other one has less rights the message to the people is that the life of one is more important than the life of others. Reporter of course many on the political right here in israel as well condemn and are shocked by the killing of this toddler and the situation that arose to it. So perhaps that rally, 2,000 to 3,000 in tel aviv not fully representative of the strength of feeling across all of the communities here. Nic robertson live for us in jerusalem, thank you for your reporting there. Now on to myanmar where heavy monsoon rains have been wreaking havoc across that country. You can see how just how bad it is by thelikes of this journalist reporting up to his chest in floodwaters. The u. N. Says the floods have killed at least 27 people and have dismiss more than 150,000 others. Those numbers are expected to rise. Myanmar declared four Natural Disaster zones after a cyclone made landfall in neighboring bangladesh on thursday. The country and other parts of Southeast Asia saw about 15 centimeters of rain in the past 24 hours. It is also a particularly trying stretch of weather for bangladesh and eastern india. Lets go to derek van dam with more details on what is coming next. Those were 24 hour totals you talked about. 15 isnt meetcentimeters. When you talk meters you know you have yourself a serious situation. Thats exactly what this cyclone brought to bangladesh over the past seven days. Sunny 24 hour rainfall this is a seven day stretch, but nonetheless, this area of low pressure has been churning across this region. This is the bay of bengal. We have myanmar to the east which also received extremely heavy rainfall. And this is the extreme eastern sections of india located here. Here is bangladesh. Look at these rainfall totals. 1,212 centimeters. Thats serious rain. I worked here for a year now and have not seen rainfall totals that excessive just yet, until now. We had the low pressure system sitting across the coast of myanmar and bangladesh over the past several days bringing heavy rainfall. Now it is slowly drifting westward and thats going to bring the threat of flooding and landslides as well as mudslides to the extreme eastern sections of india. In fact already brought some mudslides and landslides to this part of the world. Take a look at the footage coming out of the region. You see the landslides on the side of this particular mountain. Unfortunately there were about 500 people left stranded across northern india as rocks, trees and mud slid across a highway, disrupting the livelihoods and the major cleanup effort under way. This is all part of the southwest monsoon. We get these areas of low pressure developing across the bay of bengal. They do not move very quickly. There is just not a lot of steering winds across this part of the world. You can see the excessive rainfall we are expecting to continue just to the west of calcutta. On top of the rain we already experienced, lately this is the 24 hour rainfall totals this is going to lead to the possibility of more flooding for this region. Well stay in touch with you on that. So you know how it goes with new technology you often encounter new problems. And in the United States that is the case with drones that are fast becoming a serious threat to commercial airlines. There were two sightings of Unmanned Aircraft reported flying dangerously close to one of the nations busiest airports just hours apart on friday. Nick valencia has the details and tells us how common these incidents are becoming. Reporter two incidents in one day at the same airport. Cnn has now learned of a second close call between a drone and a commercial airline, in the skies above new york city. Around 2 30 friday afternoon, jetblue flight 1834 reported seeing an Unmanned Aircraft on approach to jfk. Less than three hours later, a second encounter with a drone, this time by a separate airliner delta flight 407 prepares to land at jfk airport, with 154 people on board. When the pilot spots a drone on the southwest side of the plane, just about 100 feet below. The pilot immediately contacts air traffic control. Did you by any chance get the color or type . No it is not close enough to be able to tell. Reporter then jfk tower warned other pilots of the possible danger flying around them. Jetblue, use caution on arrival, the one thats ahead of you reported a drone. Were watching out for it. Reporter phil dernerh weighed in saying without a doubt this was a close call. Explains a drone flying within 100 feet of a plane can get sucked into an engine or worse. Going into an engine can destroy an engine going into a cockpit window can injure a pilot or kill a pilot. Reporter scares like the ones at jfk happen more often than you think. At least two drone incidents each day, thats more than 60 close calls each month. In the case of delta 407 and jetblue 1834, both the planes landed safely. The faa tells cnn it is investigating both incidents. Nick valencia cnn, atlanta. Now to the u. S. Territory of puerto rico. It defaulted on its debt on sunday after missing a sizable payment. The 58 million payment is just part of the u. S. Territorys 70 billion debt. It will be the islands first default. That amount is just a small fraction of the outstanding debt. The governor there says the economy is in a death spiral. It comes after years of massive Government Spending after huge energy costs and mounting pension liabilities. Lets walk you through puerto ricos debt crisis. U. S. Territory owes about 73 billion billion, which its governor said back in june it cannot pay. But it has been able to borrow easily and its bonds have what is called triple tax exemption, meaning they are exempt from local, state and federal taxes everywhere in the United States. As a result more than 20 of u. S. Bond funds are believed to hold puerto rican debt meaning the default could have an effect on u. S. Investors. This default could be messy. The island territory has special status as a commonwealth which means it cannot file for chapter nine bankruptcy. Thats an option available to u. S. Cities and that means restructuring would have to be agreed with individual creditors, which could take years. And meanwhile, the territories economy has been stagnating for years. The Unemployment Rate in june was 12. 6 , more than double that of the mainland United States. Earlier our john mann spoke to arturo a professor of International Economics at american university. Heres what he said about comparing the u. S. Territories financial problems to those being faced in greece. Listen. Puerto rico owes a lot of money. In fact it ranks right after california in the state of new york as the Third Largest debtor municipal debtor in the United States. Were talking about a lot of money. But surely none of the leading banks are in jeopardy. Surely nobody is going to sell the dollar because puerto rico is not paying its debt. And nobody is going to question the integrity of the economic and Monetary Union of the United States that we had for two centuries. And then some. So in terms of impact on the markets on the psyche it wont be the same. What about impact on puerto rico itself . One thing said about the situation in greece is that it cant make its products or labor more attractive to the rest of the world because it cant devalue its currency. It is stuck in the strong euro. Could puerto rico get out of this if it were an independent state. It is not a full u. S. State and not independent either. Is it in the worst of all possible worlds . No not really. They get a lot of benefits from being a territory of the United States. Besides all the Legal Protections and the infrastructure and the connections to the mainland the free trade and everything of course they dont pay federal taxes, and yet they have access to Medicare Medicaid and many of the benefits that mainlanders get. So but it is true they cannot devalue the currency. So they must work on the fundamentals as greece must do namely they have to liberalize their labor markets, have to reform the public sector. They have to reduce tax evasion, they have to cut back on spending. They have to deal with the fundamentals. That was arturo speaking with john mann in new york. Youre watching cnn newsroom. At least 20 large wildfires are raging out of control in the state of california including the rocky fire in lake county. That blaze has charred more than 27,000 acres or about 11,000 hectors of land. It threatens hundreds of homes and for now is just 5 contained. Residents and firefighters of drought stricken california continue to battle these blazes. Lets turn to our meteorologist derek van dam at the World Weather center with the very latest numbers and figures on what is happening there in california. Derek . Some of these images coming out of california are astounding. And just heroic effort by the firefighters and all the volunteer firefighters taking part in battling the blazes as well. Some of these pictures are rather sad. You can imagine the livelihoods turned upside down by destroyed structures homes, only leaving chimneys standing just like this picture, this was taken on the 1st of august thanks to this rocky fire that we have been discussing. This is the latest information on the rocky fire updated just a few hours ago. 27,000 acres burned. Thats 11,000 hectors, 5 contained and over 6,000 structures that are currently threatened from this fire. It is spreading quickly and it is like a tinder box over northern california. And it is obviously no secret that this area has been under an extreme drought lately. You can see the forecast calls for no rainfall. We have exceptional Drought Conditions especially for the central and southern sections of california. But i want to show you, an astounding picture that we have obtained showing a before picture from fulsome lake dam. This is a reservoir about 25 miles northeast of sacramento. The picture on your left that was taken july 20th and 2011. The picture on your right, same dam, that picture was taken 19th of august 2014. It is serious Drought Conditions. Now look at what the dam looks like and the reservoir within this area. If we get to the next video, you can see just how low the levels at the fulsome lake and Lake Oroville region have been. You can see how incredibly dry and parched this region is. Those boats have had to find docks and jetties away from their original positions because there is just simply no water to keep the boats and you can see just how dire the circumstances are across the u. S. State of california. Something we have been covering for several, several years. This is an ongoing drought. And there is no end in sight, george unfortunately. Thats going to fuel the possibility of more wildfires. Back to you. Thats bad news. Hopefully they will get some rain soon. As youre saying thats not in the forecast right now. Doesnt look likely. Thank you so much. In the next hour we expect to find out whether three al jazeera journalists will be freed or go to prison. The naacp began their socalled americas journey for justice at the Edmund Pettis bridge. The march will end in washington, d. C. Organizers are planning to have a final rally when marchers reach the nations capital. On september 16th. In one of the worlds wealthiest countries the United States the new statistics show a disturbing number of children are growing up in poverty. The overall number of children living in poverty dropped from 16. 3 million in 2010 to 14. 7 million in 2013 but the big differences are by race and ethnicity and theyre startling. The Pew Research Center show ss today one out of every three hispanic children in america live in poverty. Thats 30 of the 18 million hispanic children in the United States. Two out of every five africanamerican children grew up in poverty compared to white and asian children. Only one in every ten grow up in poverty. Cnns digital correspondent tenzina vegas studied the statistics and spoke to poppy harlow about what is driving the statistics. There is a wealth gap in the United States. When we define wealth were talking about your assets. So your Retirement Savings home if youre a homeowner, up against your the debt you have right . And in this country, the median net worth of a white family is around 130,000 to 140,000. When you compare that to africanamericans at 11,000 and hispanic families of 13,000 thats a huge gap. One researcher called this a legacy of discrimination that has happened when you look at things like red lining and why certain families were kept out of certain communities, the lower home rate the higher subprime mortgage the rates of subprime mortgages that people of color were saddled with. And sometimes targeted. Right. This is something that has been continuous and sustained and this is hard when you dont have wealth to be able to pass that on. When you look at the recovery you know it is bifurcated. You look at who is doing better there is a reason the income gap is growing in this country. The job market has recovered largely, yes, but the jobs that are coming back are not always the higher paying jobs with sustainable wages for a family. What needs to change on that front and how is that driving these numbers . Again, africanamericans have a higher rate of unemployment than hispanics, whites and asians. Were looking at that number first of all. The numbers are really startling. They tend to be large numbers of africanamericans tend to be underemployed or working low wage jobs or struggling to get back into the market. Part of what is happening here is something known as unconscious bias that happens a lot, right . There have been studies that show if you see two resumes with the exact same qualifications one has a black sounding name one has a white sounding name the one with the black sounding name may not even get a callback from that recruiter. So these folks are getting stopped at the door right . So this is something that has been proven time and time again. Youre also looking at the fact that when africanamericans are hired, they tend to earn less than people from other races. So whites and asians, for example. Therefore having difficulty saving more money. This is again, it is not just an isolated incident. These are things that accumulate over time. And the fact that the longer the cycle goes on so many families that ive interviewed and talked to living in poverty said their parents and grandparents grew up in the same Housing Project and the cycle needs to be broken and i always get the education answer but thats a huge thing to fix. Thats a huge thing, yeah. Thank you very much. You can go to cnnmoney. Com to learn more about the full article she published. Want to share with you a bittersweet story now out of the u. S. Now to a historic homecoming the remains of more than 30 world war ii marines recovered from a remote Pacific Island were finally returned to the United States. Jake tapper has the emotional story. Reporter more than 36 american servicemen finally arrived home this week. No longer missing in action. Among them a metal of honor recipient, First Lieutenant alex bonnieman jr. , whose family waited nearly 72 years for his return. Bonnieman perished on this remote pacific atoll in 1943. He was fighting valiantly to take this strategically significant land from the japanese. Records show he crawled exposed ahead of the front line to advance his teams position under heavy fire. He killed at least three enemy soldiers before being killed himself. After three bloody days americans gained control of the isle. They lost more than 1100 men dozens unaccounted for ever since. Many marines were battled battle side in a trench called cemetery 27 that was eventually lost track of. A multimillion dollar project by the nonprofit history flight helped to find it. And they announced the discovery of the Service Members last month. His grandson clay bonnieman evans was there to witness this all firsthand. He had this film and it gets a little graphic, he wanted us to see the powerful image. This is the big deal for me. Well be back with more news from around the world. Youre watching cnn, the worlds news leader. Malaysia confirms debris found on reunion island belongs to a boeing 777. Now all eyes are on french investigators, a lab there to see whether it was part of the missing flight mh370. Also, cries for peace ring out across parts of israel after a violent week. Firefighters finally containing some blazes that are tearing through the state of california. Well have the latest on the wildfire emergency. From cnn World Headquarters in atlanta, im George Howell. This is cnn newsroom. Good day and welcome to our viewers in the United States and around the world. We begin wtsd the latest on mh370. That debris that washed ashore from the indian ocean did once belong to a boeing 777. Thats the latest word in a new statement from the Malaysia Ministry of transport. On wednesday, investigators in france will try to determine if the debris is indeed part of that missing Malaysia Airlines flight. The piece thats called a flaperon arrived with a Police Escort to a lab near toulouse on saturday. The debris turned up this weekend on the shores of reunion, more than 2,000 miles away from the search zone. For more on the investigation, lets turn to our cnn correspondent david mulko live in hong kong at this hour. Malaysia answering part of the question that this piece did belong to a boeing 777. How significant is that . Thats right, george. This statement coming in just in the last hour. We heard a couple of days ago from the malaysians they said it was most certainly from a 777. Now theyre saying its been officially identified. Ill read a bit of that statement here. They write, we know the flaperon has been officially identified as part of a boeing 777 aircraft. This has been verified by french authorities together with boeing the u. S. Ntsb the National Transportation safety board, and the malaysian team. Theyre using the words officially identified. The statement though goes on to say that the verification process is going to take place in toulouse starting on wednesday. But it seems that they have moved to a position by International Consensus here that they can officially identify this piece as being from a boeing 777. One other thing we picked up here they say that china will also take part in that verification process at that lab in toulouse. Of course china having the most snub of number of passengers on board Malaysia Airlines flight 370. In china and other countries with families who have people on that flight as weve mentioned several times in these broadcasts. They want 100 accuracy. Again, were hearing from is indeed part of a boeing 777. David, how soon could we see that preliminary report come out on whether this could be part of mh370 . George theyre going to be doing this by the book, methodically with all of these International Partners involved. Down that list. French americans, chinese, malaysians as well. All working together. They do not want to make a mistake. Remember this is the only thing they have. The only piece of physical evidence in more than 500 days. So the next couple of days are about getting together figuring out how theyre going to proceed, and then on wednesday, that examination we expect to start. Now, that is looking at the numbers, is this something that can tie this directly to mh370 is there something potentially, a marking on it or something that corresponds to a maintenance record. They may even have to go so far as to take it apart and look inside and begin to try to get a closer understanding. It all just depends, george. The important thing here is theyre going to do this in a very structured methodical, and sensitive way. Fundamentally, this is a human tragedy and the families are counting on them to get it right. David, this investigation happening just outside toulouse france. But its calling in experts really from all over the world. Thats right, george. Theres Something Else that just came in the statement that i really wanted to let you know. The malaysians are now reaching out to other countries around reunion island so we could assume maybe the island of mauritius, madagascar down the southeastern coast of africa. They are saying basically theyre asking for help theyre looking for expert help in case more debris washes up on shore. One of the questions weve been asking since this piece was uncovered on wednesday, should there be a second search . You have the underwater search off the coast of australia, but should there be a surface search for debris in and around reunion, maybe up and down that coast of africa and madagascar or should there be a concerted effort to look for more debris . It appears that that is what the malaysians doing there now, beginning to move in that direction. David, youve been on this story since the beginning we will stay in touch with you for your insights and reporting live in hong kong, thank you so much. Again what we know at this hour is that piece is part of a boeing 777. This is according to malaysian officials. So if it is indeed part of mh370 it would be the First Physical piece of evidence from that flight. Simon simon simon simona has more. Reporter this crucial piece of puzzle arrived with a Police Escort to this lab, run by the French Ministry of defense, where air accident investigators and forensic teams will take a look. Right now its closed, its closed for the weekend. There wont be any scientists or experts here until at least monday morning. So it may take some time. In this really delicate procedure. It arrived in a sealed box. Everyone who touches this part has to be registered their details written down before investigators get to them. People are flying in from across the world, from the United States the ntsb members from boeing malaysian authorities, and of course the french investigators too. And in parallel with the forensic investigation, there will be judicial teams arriving too because there is also a civil manslaughter case here in france looking into whether or not perhaps terrorist activity or a hijacking was involved in the disappearance of flight mh370. Now what will scientists be doing . They will take a look at this part of the plane. They will confirm whether indeed as experts believe, that this is from a 777 aircraft and whether or not it is from flight mh370. Two numbers have been taken from this part as well. That could potentially trace it to the aircraft it came from. And then they will see whether or not this was torn away from the rest of the aircraft midair or in the water. And they will take a look at whether an explosion was involved. These are all the details that the experts say theyll be looking into. Two u. S. Officials tell cnn a preliminary assessment made months ago by american intelligence agencies suggests that someone in the cockpit deliberately moved the plane off its course. Its a detail that has renewed scrutiny over the flights captain and the flights first officer. Heres our randi kaye with more. Reporter good night, malaysian 370. The last words from the cockpit of the doomed flight. Spoken by captain Zaharie Ahmad shah. The captain was 53 married with three children. He and his wife lived in this gated community in the suburbs of koala lum bur. Hed been flying with Malaysia Airlines for 33 years and was also reportedly a flight instructor. Zaharie was so passionate about flying he had a Flight Simulator at home. He posts it on youtube. He built it himself. Friends told cnn he built it so so he could practice in case the unthinkable happened. Zaharie, who had more than 18,000 hours flying also gave tips on youtube about tinkering with a refrigerator and air conditioner. Household air conditioning unit reporter at zaharies home no suicide note was ever found by police to suggest he had ever planned to take mh370 down. Nor did a preliminary review of his Flight Simulator hard drive turn up anything suspicious. Though some files were deleted in the month before the flight. If you were just deleting files off the hard drive in order to provide more room youd delete it once you wouldnt go through the extra effort to completely destroy the file and make it irretrievable. Reporter it did not appear to officials then that the pilot tried to scrub his hard drive when he deleted files. The copilots hard drive was also found to be not suspicious. I would like to take this opportunity to state that the passengers the pilots and the crew remain innocent until proven otherwise. Reporter fariq was 27 and lived with his family. He joined the airline in 2007 and had transitioned to flying the 777 after wrapping up his simulator training. Mh370 was his first unsupervised flight in the jumbo jets cockpit. A month before the plane disappeared, cnns aviation correspondent Richard Quest visited fariq in another cockpit when he was still training. That day his captain described fariqs landing as textbook perfect. And it turns out the first officer had entertained other guests in the cockpit too. This woman took photos while she was in the cockpit with fariq where he and his colleague smoked cigarettes. After the crash, Malaysia Airlines said they were shocked by the allegations. By the time those final words were spoken from mh370s cockpit to air traffic control, the airline said someone had already started to alter the flight plan. So was it the pilot . Did he disable the planes Communication Systems and turn off the transponder . The transponder helps those on the ground locate the plane. If this wasnt just a terrible accident whoever did this never wanted to be found. That was cnns randi kaye reporting. Now on to other news that were following around the world. After a violent week in israel thousands of protesters flooded the streets on saturday making a plea for peace. There were multiple rallies held. There were people marching to condemn a stabbing attack at a jerusalem gay pride parade that left six people wounded and in tel aviv some 3,000 demonstrators gathered in response to fridays arson attack in the west bank an arson attack that killed a palestinian toddler. For more on the story lets bring in cnns Senior International correspondent Nick Robertson who is live in jerusalem this hour. Good to have you with us again. So the Prime Minister ben netanyahu, has spoken today and is there any word on whether he plans to take any direct action or activate some sort of tangible force just given the response to what happened . Well, what hes saying is given the two despicable crimes the stabbing and the arson attack the burning and killing of the palestinian 18monthold toddler, he said that the country has zero tolerance and he said that hes empowering the Security Forces and the Enforcement Forces to use all legal means, he said to bring to justice the murderers and to bring justice to the stabber and the arsonists who were involved in these attacks. He says that the country will fight hatred and will fight terrorism. So hes using very Strong Language and indicating that he is absolutely not going to tolerate either of these types of attacks. The president last night who spoke at another gay pride rally here in jerusalem again, this was a rally specifically to call out with anger against the attack the stabbing attack just a couple of days ago, that injured six people at that gay pride rally. The president talked about the country being in flames. Flames of hatred flames of violence. And unless those flames are extinguished then the country itself could be destroyed. Thats what he said. And weve just heard from the president s office this morning that subsequent to that speech given by the president last night that he has received death threats, and this file to the president s office has been passed to the police to investigate those threats. This is a very heated and passionate issue right now in this country, george. And nic, the Prime Minister calling this an act of terrorism, despite the fact that the palestinians many are placing the blame on israeli policies. But as you point out, this is a different tone to hear the Prime Minister describe it as terrorism, nothing less. Yeah and he said it wont be tolerated, this terrorism wont be tolerate edd on the jewish side or the palestinian side. This is what he is saying. So its very strong. But the criticism of the governments not just coming from the palestinians who said that its the policy of settlements and allowing those, that allows this hatred to breathe and results in attacks like this. This is a decadeslong policy is what the palestinian leaders have been saying. But its also the left wing here there was a left wing rally in tel aviv attended by several thousand people. The organizer, an Organization Called peace now, he spoke to us and this is what he said about what they on the left see as led to this attack that killed a toddler. We came here not just to condemn the attack against the palestinian. We came here to condemn the israeli policy and its much bigger than that. We came here to say the occupation the result of the occupation the result of the policy that says that one person has full rights and the other one has less rights the message to the people eventually is that the life of one is more important than the life of others. What people say here might be a gamechanger if there was a sort of unified rally here where everyone of all political leanings came out publicly on the street to demonstrate against this particular socalled price tag attack that killed this palestinian child. It certainly has galvanized and brought a lot of people together. A significant moment. Nick robertson live in jerusalem, thank you so much for your reporting there. The terrorism retrial of three al jazeera journalisted has been postponed again. They were arrested in 2013 and charged with joining what the Egyptian Government calls a terror group, the muslim brotherhood. They have been out on bail since february. One of the journalists, peter grest, was deported to australia earlier this year. We heard from him then when he explained why he believes he and his colleagues were thrown in jail. Listen. The campaign to support us helped us flip the whole trial, at least in our own minds. It wasnt personal. It wasnt about us. It wasnt about anything that we had done. It was about a contest between the government and the institution of the media, freedom of the press. A story that we will continue to follow and bring you updates and developments from cairo as we learn more. The u. S. Heavy monsoon rains have been wreaking havoc across myanmar and you can see how bad it is right here with this brave journalist reporting up to his chest in floodwater. The u. N. Says the floods have killed at least 27 people and theyve displaced more than 150,000 others. This journalist doing his best to give the facts in a really difficult situation there. Those numbers are expected to rise. Myanmar, along with other parts of Southeast Asia saw about 15 centimeters of rain in the past 24 hours alone. At least 20 large wildfires are raging across the state of california. The rocky fire is one of the biggest, charring more than 11,000 hectares thats about 27,000 acres, of land. And it is just 5 contained. Evacuations have been ordered in lake county northwest of the city of sacramento where the the blaze threatens hundreds of homes there. California is under a state of emergency as 8,000 firefighters do their very best to try to put these fires out. Lets turn to our meteorologist derek van dam at the World WeatherCenter Following the fires. Is there any relief in sight, any rain coming for california . Unfortunately, i wish i could say there is but it doesnt appear that it will take place any time soon. Even if they do get a sporadic thunderstorm across this area it could be a dry thunderstorm meaning lightning could very easily trigger more or additional wildfires across northern and central california. Some of these photos coming out of california at the moment are just really showing the heroism of the volunteer and fulltime firefighters out there. My hats off to those guys for battling these significant blazes. And some of the stories here of just houses and structures being destroyed. This is to me quite an impactful image. You can see just what remains of the structure of a home this being a fireplace, and you can see the charred remains right on the front part of the fireplace there. And the smoke billowing in the background. This is the latest information on the rocky fire. This is the largest fire over the western half of the u. S. At the moment. 27,000 acres have been burned. Thats again equivalent to around 11,000 hectares. Only 5 containment as of a few hours ago. The latest update. And over 6,000 structures are threatened with some of them already being burned as well. And so we know that we dont want wind being a factor in this going forward. We certainly want some rain. But unfortunately neither of those are going to work in our favor. Its no secret california has been under extreme to exceptional Drought Conditions. But i want to show you this before and after image coming from the folsom reservoir. This is about 25 miles northeast of sacramento. What youre looking at at the left the left side of your tv screen is a picture taken july 20th 2011. On the righthand side of your screen thats a picture taken on the 19th of august in 2014. This dam looks like this now. If we can advance to the video of the folsom lake and the folsom reservoir. Its only holding 29 of its total capacity. This water is imperative for some of the local communities in that area. You can see it is drying up and its drying up very quickly. Even revealing some of these old establishments that were originally established there in the middle 1800s now starting to reappear again because lake levels are dropping. Back to you. That video really tells the story. The map behind you doesnt have good news for the future there. Derek van dam, thank you so much. Cnns nick valencia has the details and tells us how common these incidents are becoming. Reporter two incidents in one day. At the same airport. Cnn has now learned of a second close call between a drone and a commercial airline in the skies above new york city. Around 2 30 friday afternoon, jet blue flight 1834 reports seeing an Unmanned Aircraft on approach to jfk. Less than three hours later, a second encounter with a drone, this time by a separate airliner delta flight 407 prepares to land at jfk airport with 154 people on board. When the pilot spots a drone on the southwest side of the plane, just about 100 feet below. The pilot immediately contacts air traffic control. Did you get the color or type . Use caution, the one thats ahead of you reported a drone at the Floyd Bennett field over there, so you might see that occurring. Were probably higher than he was but were watching it for it. Reporter aviation. Com weighed in saying without a doubt this was a close call. He explains a drone flying within 100 feet of a plane can easily get sucked into an engine or worse. Going into the cockpit window can injure a pilot or kill a pilot. Reporter scares like the one at jfk happen more often than you think. A local Government Official on reunion island seth they may have found they have found, rather a metal object of interest on the beach. This is the same Remote Island in the indian ocean where a piece of wing was discovered just last week. So far, officials are not offering any more information on this new object that was found. The malaysian transport minister says the part that was found a few days ago is definitely from a boeing 777. That is the same type of plane that is used by Malaysia Airlines flight 370 when it went missing last i cant remember. For more insight on what could be learned from this airplane part lets turn to Jeffrey Thomas editor in chief and managing director of airlinerating. Com, and joins us now live via skype. Jeffrey, thank you so much for being with us today. So lets go back to this new information from malaysia that confirms this piece is part of a boeing 777. How significant is that . Its very significant indeed that the malaysians are now saying definitely it is from a 777. What we do know is what is missing is a identification plate thats adhered to the flaperon which links it directly to mh to an airline like Malaysia Airlines. Thats missing. So the investigation thats going to be conducted in france in toulouse france this week is a forensic examination probably taking the flaperon to pieces to find batch numbers and serial numbers that will link this to a particular aircraft. All parts, all subparts of aircraft have serial numbers that can be traced back to the batch that theyre made and the raw material theyre made from. A very comprehensive system this is. Theyll be able to track it to exactly what airplane it belongs to. Lets also talk about one theory that is out there, this theory that the flaperon weve been talking about for a few days now, that it might have washed ashore earlier. In fact it might have washed ashore in may. What are your thoughts about that . Yes, indeed. That has been confirmed by several different eyewitnesses in the reunion island. And that however, is consistent with modeling done by oceanographers in march, april last year when the search was in the southern indian ocean. Maybe drift analysis which suggested within 12 to 18 months debris would start arriving on the east coast of africa. So if it arrived there in may, even april, even march, that would be consistent with the drift analysis. The problem is though george that because we dont know the date that it actually arrived at the reunion island we cant do a reverse drift modeling which would track it back to where it originated from. That was something that was hoped for. And unfortunately, were not going to be able to do that. And then the other question were hearing from local Government Officials on reunion island that they found a metal object on the beach. Again, nothing more beyond that. But just your quick take on that . Yes, we have had several reports coming from reputable News Services and people on the ground in reunion island ive been talking to this afternoon, and the detail they have is sketchy. It is unconfirmed. But the size of the object is about one foot square. A panel, internal panel. It has various language writing on it. But i must stress that its completely unconfirmed and the police will make no comment to various people who have asked for confirmation. Again, completely unconfirmed is very accurate. All we know at this point is were hearing from officials there that a metal object of interest has been found, and we will of course continue to monitor that and bring you any confirmed information as we get it. Were talking about a lot of money. But surely none of the leading banks are in jeopardy. Surely nobodys going to sell the dollar because puerto rico is not paying its debt. And nobodys going to question the integrity of the economic and Monetary Union of the United States that weve had for two centuries and then some. So in terms of impact on the markets, on the psyche it wont be the same. What about impact on puerto rico itself . One of the things thats said about the situation in greece is that it cant make its products or labor more attractive to the rest of the world because it cant devalue its currency, it is stuck in the relatively strong euro. Could puerto rico get out of this if it were a truly independent state . Its not a full u. S. State, and its not independent either. Is it in the worst of all possible worlds . No, not really. They get a lot of benefits from being a territory of the United States. Besides all the Legal Protections and the infrastructure and the connections to the mainland the free trade and everything of course they dont pay federal taxes. And yet they have access to Medicare Medicaid and many of the benefits that mainlanders get. But its true they cannot devalue the currency. So they must work on the fundamentals as greece must do. Namely they have to liberalize their labor markets. They have to reform the public sector. They have to reduce tax evasion. They have to cut back on spending. They have to deal with the fundamentals.
