The hope there in the president s words is that in these final 13 days, you will somehow forget the past seven painful months and ignore todays soaring reality, two horrid coronavirus peaks behind us and the United States staring down a new climb. Tuesday, the highest single day total since the end of july. The daily average of new cases for july now just below 60,000. This hour, zero states trending in the right direction, zero. Deaths ticked up 933 american lives lost. The result of the pandemic is less cases so makes it likely this jump is just a blip. But President Trump said back to normal is coming soon. Dr. Fauci said reality, though, is very different. Unfortunately, weve plateaued again to about 40,000 to 50,000 cases a day, and as were getting into the cooler weather, were getting more and more cases. So this looks like were going to have a very difficult fall and winter. Lets look at the numbers behind that sober assessment from dr. Fauci here. If you look at the statebystate map, whats missing . Green is missing. Green means down. There is no green on this map. Red and orange are bad. 26 states trending up. More new Coronavirus Infections now in 26 states than a week ago. Thats trending in the wrong direction. The beige are States Holding steady, 24 holding steady. 26 trending in the wrong direction. 24 trending water. No states right now reporting fewer infections this week compared to the data last week. That is not a good map. Thats why dr. Fauci has that sober message. In fact, three states deciding to impose new restrictions, illinois and washington state, as you see, holding steady. The governor wants to impose restrictions even though the positive rate is low. Mexico is in deep red, 50 more cases than last week. Illinois also trending up. New restrictions there. Heres what reminds us of history and, b, what could lie ahead. Lets walk through this a little bit. Remember, the president said this would disappear in april. That is here. Vice president said it would be largely behind us by memorial day. No, thats here. More than 80 of the infections happened since after memorial day. Now just draw it out. Were heading back. You thought the summer was horrible, its inevitable we will reach that peak in the days ahead. If this was horrible, what comes in the fall and winter is what dr. Fauci is talking about when he talks about the trends. Heres another trend we hope, hope the number is wrong, meaning not the beginning of a trend, just a bad day. 933 americans dyeing from covid yesterday. You see the blue line, it had been below 1,000. All of the models and projections say giving the caseload we have, that will trend back up. We hope thats not the case but that number tells you we need to keep an eye on that in the weeks head. Something else to watch, hospitalizations. Peak of the summer surge, you see the line down and now going back up. With all of those cases, you get hospitalizations, death follows that. Weve been through this cycle sadly before. Heres what tells you we will have more cases today, more cases tomorrow and more cases into the foreseeable future. 14 states have a Positivity Rate, 14 states above 10 . Look, 17 and 18 in alabama and mississippi, 52 iowa, 36 south dakota, 35 wyoming, 29 in idaho, 21 nevada. Look at the high doubledigit Positivity Rate. That means more cases today and likelihood more will be infected tomorrow. 14 states with Positivity Rate over 10 . If youre keeping count, 11 of the 14 have republican governors and its a fact republican have been less to use powers like mask man dace. Th mandates. And it means more community spread. And it has dr. Fauci saying once again, please, get back to the fundamentals. There are fundamental ways to prevent the acquisition and transmission of sars coronavirus 2. I have repeated this so many times publicly but i think its worth repeating now. The universal wearing of masks or clothfaced coverings, maintaining physical distance at least six feet, avoiding crowds and congregate settings, particularly indoors. Let me ask you in closing about the new data from the American Academy of pediatrics, is this something to worry about or something you think is normal, 13 cases of children in the past two weeks, october 1 and october 15th, 741,000 tested positive since the start. Is it the kids are back to school, virus is coming back because of the fall and winter, is that a normal number or is that something you look at and say we better be worried about that . I definitely think we better be worried about that. First of all, theres a myth children cannot get infected. Clearly, they can. Secondly, as kids get infections, those kids live with adults and those kids bring the germs back home to adults so part of the reason i think were seeing the virulent spread is children are heading to school, getting exposed to the virus and bringing it home uncirculated in incumbered communities. So for biden and some of those democrats on the grounds in those states, theyre starting to think a little better. Theyre starting to see joe biden should invest in these places and he can close the deal here. For example, the logistics concern to follow the winner on Election Night, a moral call to see if we beat trump by a lot, republicans see that and think differently into a possible joe biden administration. But they also want to lay the ground work for a robust presidency. They dont want the kind of obamaesque 2009 when theyre trying to recalibrate and get to the middle where republicans are and they dont think they have a mandate on the vote front on specific issues. They are saying this could be the groundwork for a robust presidency and progressives see this as a first step of making the case to joe biden, you have to listen to us. One, theyre encouraged by early voting numbers but that doesnt matter if theyre going to vote anyway. It matters to people who might not show up on election day. So youre just adding to your vote. We put the map up, if youre democrats, your snalt candidates also have money, state parties, iowa. If joe biden is competitive there, maybe it tips the senate race. North carolina, senate race there. There are two senate races in georgia. If you win florida, youre making a big statement and then look at texas, we lean red but wow, if we can win texas, what a statement that would send and what a possibility to flip legislative seats and even keep a senate race in play. The question is can the democrats coordinate, spend wisely and use their resources right in the final days . Exactly. Its not the question of the amount of resources. They are as you say awash in money from president ial down to state legislature point. But the question is, will those investments, particularly at key times in these final pushes in key states, allow that tipping over the edge . I heard one democratic strategist say the most important numbers from democrats, particularly in the Southern States when you think of the georgias and texas ask not getting to 45 but moving from the last 5 up to 50 where you can get a real robust win. I heard a republican tell me recently that georgia isnt a purple state just yet so democrats can win one of those statewide elections, its still a red state. So people are still having a waitandsee approach because they know democrats are close to making the breakthrough but it requires turning out new voters, new populations, latino and voters who are yuchk andy proportionately nonwhite in texas, converting them from residents to voters is something that takes longterm investments and campaigns have historically mixed records on. Look, at the end of the day, really, its all up to us, the people, to keep our mask on, keep our social distancing and take common sense approaches. Thats when theyre expected to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court and then head home, campaign a week before the election and then return after the election for a lameduck session of congress. That is not final yet but its a clear indication of where things are headed. The action right now is in the house and any deal that could be reached between pelosi and Steve Mnuchin is unlikely to get a vote in the senate before election day. In fact, its more likely, im told, from local choices in both parties that any deal will have to get voted on in a lameduck session of congress. That happens after the november 3rd elections and up until january. And not just because of the divisions of the Republican Party and there are significant ones, but also the logistical hurdles in moving the built, a roughly 12 trillion price tag theyre talking about, moving that will be difficult so most people believe people waiting for relief will still have to see when washington will finally act, john. We will keep an eye on that calendar. Manu, its interesting the disagreement over stimulus is not the only sign of separation or tension between the senate and president right now. Yes, a lot of different issues, particularly the way the president is closing the campaign, attacking anthony fauci, going after the media, calling joe biden a criminal. I spoke to several republicans, including ones in difficult races, particularly about the president s attacks and this is what a few told me. Senator tom pilsen, up for reelection in north carolina, a very difficult race said i have a lot of confidence in dr. Fauci, this after the president called dr. Fauci a disaster. And Lindsey Graham saying i trust his judgment. Lindsey graham is in a very difficult senate race. John thune is not up for reelection but second highest ranking republican in the senate and said the president needs to quit attacking fauci, focus on the issues and almost said quit attacking the media but, of course, the president is not listening to his colleagues, which is why a lot of republicans, john, fear a lot could impact the Senate Majority and debate about what it means for the party if trump loses is also starting to intensify, john. Should we listen to the president or his own department of Homeland Security. I think at times like this, john, you have to listen to the state and local Election Officials and say whats doable. Right now they are talking about any partisan motivation in the sense their job is being sure the ballots are cast and counted properly. And from my experience, those state and local officials have a great deal of integrity in wanting to get the job done right. They say its going to take a few days, listen to them. As someone who has been through this before, recounts, watching counting of ballots after the election and the like, what does it say to you when you see those numbers, plus 179 in volume of early voting in states were tracking compared to four years ago. We knew it would be up because of the pandemic, is that higher than anticipated and what does it tell you about the pace of the count . I think its higher than i would have anticipated. I think what you never know at a time like this from the early numbers is whether this is energized voters wanting to cast their ballots early or really an expanded pool of voters so that well see even more than the 150 to 160 Million People that are anticipated. You never quite know the answer to that until you have the total. Remember democrats thought they had a huge advantage in 2016, turned out in the end we know who is president. We have to watch. Just because you vote early, it doesnt affect the math unless more people are voting. Well talk again about legal challenges, one was resolved because they had a settlement in mississippi. The state agreed to expand curbside voting and allow absentee voegts to fix ballots. They will notify you if theres some discrepancy in your ballot so you can show up. If it is your ballot, you can show up and fix it. This seems to be a reasonable compromise in an age where were seeing a lot of deep fights in the course. What do you make of that . I think it is a reasonable compromise. What mississippi did not change, will not change, thais you still need an excuse to vote absentee. So it is not a no excuse absentee state like many more are. They are routed through estonia and saudi arabia. Does that mean that the people who sent these emails are in estonia and saudi arabia . No, it doesnt. What it does mean is that whoever is behind these emails have taken a lot of steps, somewhat sophisticated steps, to mask who they are and where the messages are coming from. Of course we should mention the proud boys, though their name is on the email and they are a hate group, they say they have nothing to do with this. That is very possibly the case. We have seen groups try to pose as opposing groups online in recent months, including, of course, the summer we saw White Supremacists pose as antifa on social media, all designed to sow division, chaos and fear.
